13 Best Hotels in Porto

By Abigail Malbon

The Yeatman Porto one of the best hotels in Porto

While Lisbon remains a favorite weekend break destination, hot on its heels is Porto ; a city home to some of Portugal’s best hotels , with culture aplenty, arguably the most beautiful train station in the world, and port tastings available at every wine bar on every corner. The Douro Valley, Portugal’s most famous wine region, is just a two-hour scenic train ride away, while the city itself is home to the vertigo-inducing Luís Bridge (yes, you can climb it), stunning street art and a gluttonous local dish, the francesinha sandwich.

Whether you’re looking for a quirky boutique hotel, or somewhere to relax with views of the Douro river, this is our selection of the best hotels in Porto, starting off with a few favorites.

  • Best hotel in Porto for design lovers: Torel 1884
  • Best hotel in Porto for views of the Douro: Torel Avantgarde
  • Best hotel in Porto for a prime location: PortoBay Flores
  • Best hotel in Porto for affordability: Tipografia Do Conto
  • Most tranquil hotel in Porto: Pestana Palicio do Freixo

Gran Cruz House hotel in Porto

1. Gran Cruz House

Best hotel in Porto for riverside dining

Overlooking the Douro River on the corner of one of the city’s oldest squares, this small design hotel is right in the thick of it. Inside, cooling ice cream colors welcome guests from the flurry outside—think pistachio-hued walls, mango-toned cushions, and a berry-red 17th-century facade. Seven boutique bedrooms are set across four floors, each inspired by a different Port Wine—the Pink room, for example, evokes hazy summer days, where bright colors and fun patterns give way to giant windows and a balcony looking out over the square. The restaurant, however, is this hotel’s crowning jewel. Inspired by Porto’s history and landscape, Casario is an ode to the city’s gastronomy and viniculture. Under the helm of Miguel Castro Silva, one of Portugal’s most famous chefs, the menu is uniquely split into cold dishes and hot dishes. Highlights include flaked bites of deep-fried skate with a hazelnut and celeriac puree and sea bass, pan-seared for extra crispy skin, served on a bed of creamy saffron rice—both of which I could have eaten endless servings of. — Olivia Morelli

Address : Praça da Ribeira - Viela do Buraco 19, Porto, 4050-132 Portugal Price : Rooms from $148 per night

Casa da Companhia Porto portugal

2. Casa da Companhia, Vignette Collection

Best hotel in Porto for modern elegance In the middle of Rua das Flores, one of Porto’s most iconic pedestrianized shopping streets, entering this hotel feels like you’ve stepped straight into the city’s ancient history. Built in the 16th century as a family home by Brás Brandão, a merchant nobleman, before becoming the headquarters of the Port company Real Companhia Velha. As a nod to the building’s past, staff host a bi-weekly tradition of ‘fire opening’ a bottle of Port for guests to learn more about the building’s history and the city’s port culture. The hotel’s design is a perfect blend of modern touches and traditional architecture; gold-panelled windows and mirrors feature in all of the rooms, paired with elegant minimalist furnishings and large marble bathrooms. Cathedral or garden rooms have the best views—depending on whether you prefer something tranquil or a lookout over the city. Stop by the spa for a slice of tranquillity, laze by the outdoor swimming pool with views of the cathedral, and be sure to drop into the hotel’s restaurant during your stay, where terra-cotta walls, backlit shelves of wine and fresh, local food welcome you. — Olivia Morelli

Address: Casa da Companhia, Vignette Collection, R. das Flores 69, 4050-416 Porto Price : Doubles from about $131 per night

Torel 1884 Suites Apartments Porto Hotel

3. Torel 1884 Arrow

Best hotel in Porto for design lovers

Breakfast here isn’t just breakfast; it’s proof of how brilliant Portuguese design is right now. Elegantly tapered knives and forks, jade-green ceramics holding quince jelly, a chalky-white espresso cup indented with abstract patterns—all handcrafted by family-run ateliers. The rest of the hotel takes a similar outlook. In the plant-lined entrance, clay faces grimace and grin down at guests—gods on one side, earthly mortals on the other—the work of sculptor João Pedro Rodrigues, alluding to Portugal’s Age of Discovery. Paying impressionistic homage to that era, three floors of high-windowed bedrooms riff on Africa, the Americas, and Asia with tactile compositions of raffia, cane, silk, leafy greens and Atlantic blues, a roar of tiger print. All about are heavily textured paintings by Jorge Curval—a black-and-white portrait of a gentleman in mustache and bicorne hat; a thick-daubed woman smoking a paint brush. Climb to the top banister, peer down at the patterned tiles, and it feels like watching a Portuguese Downton Abbey . When it comes to the country’s post-millennium boom, Lisbon gets most of the column inches but Porto is just as exciting, and this is an apt poster child for the city’s revival. — Rick Jordan

Address: R. de Mouzinho da Silveira N 228, 4050-417 Porto, Portugal Price : Doubles from about $142 per night

Torel Avantgarde

4. Torel Avantgarde

Best hotel in Porto for views of the Douro

If location is key, you’ll struggle to find better than Torel Avantgarde; a 60-room boutique hotel within walking distance of São Bento train station, Luís Bridge, and other local attractions, with arguably the best view of the Douro River in Porto. With an uninterrupted look out from the hotel’s outdoor pool, it feels like a slice of serenity even during a busy long weekend.

Each room at the hotel is themed differently around an artist, from Francis Bacon to Frida Kahlo, and as a result, you’re guaranteed a unique stay, even if you return. Our insider tip: If you can, book the Charlie Chaplin, Frida Kahlo, or Diego Rivera room for the biggest bathtub you’ve ever seen, with a stunning view out over the balcony. – Abigail Malbon

Address: Torel Avantgarde, Rua da Restauraçāo, 336, Porto, 4050-501 Price : Doubles from about $132 per night

5. Rosa et al Townhouse

Best hotel in Porto for creative types

A boutique hotel, spa, restaurant, deli…for a small property, Rosa et al has a lot of substance. Everything is aesthetic, from the claw-foot bathtubs in the rooms to hand-crocheted throws on the beds, while the courtyard garden is a peaceful place to take five.

Known locally as a cultural hub, residents come for the much-loved brunch and stay for the spa. There are just six rooms available, each designed differently but with a focus on aesthetics. Top tip: The Garden Pavillion is particularly beautiful. – Abigail Malbon

6. Torel Palace Porto

Best hotel in Porto for history buffs

There are three Torel properties in total in Porto, and the Palace is a beautifully-located slice of history in the city center. Dating back to 1886, the original palace was restored and reopened in 2020 with a focus on its original elegance—from the library in the entrance hall to the winding staircase and stunning skylight. There’s a feeling of grandeur throughout the hotel, with enough modern touches to suit everyone; particularly in rooms, which house giant mirrored-covered bathrooms.

The hotel’s restaurant, Blind, is a particular highlight. A tribute to Portuguese writer José Saramago's novel Blindness , the ‘Emotions’ menu consists of 8 or 10 courses, each inspired by childhood memories of chef Vítor Matos.

Address : Torel Palace Porto, Rua de Entreparedes N. 42, Porto, 4000-197 Price : Doubles from about $137 per night

PortoBay Flores Porto portugal

7. PortoBay Flores

Best hotel in Porto for a prime location

Set in a 16th-century palace, the hotel has recently undergone a renovation but aims to retain much of its original detailing; from the wrought-iron balconies to original granite flooring in the entrance and tiles throughout. There are 66 rooms in total—55 in the new building and 11 in the old mansion—and top floor rooms offer a beautiful view of the city’s terra-cotta roofs.

Those who are new to Porto are likely to be impressed by the hotel’s location, with almost all of the main sights within walking distance.

Address: PortoBay Flores, Rua das Flores, 27, 4050-416, Porto Price : Doubles from about $128 per night

Exmo Hotel Porto

8. Exmo Hotel

Best hotel in Porto for quirky touches

Porto’s pretty townhouses sit along the river, bringing classic Portuguese colors to the landscape. Among them is Exmo hotel, a standout building with a bright ochre exterior, home to 16 rooms over four floors—and while the building itself is traditional, the interior is anything but. Rooms feature unusual design details, from brightly-colored velvet armchairs resting against original stone walls to huge walk-in showers. Artworks and sculptures by local artists are on display throughout the hotel, and the bar pays homage to the building’s warehouse roots—the metal beams and industrial feel in the bar would be at home in a downtown New York location.

Address: Exmo Hotel, Rua do Infante D. Henrique, 55-61, 4050-297 Porto Price: Doubles from about $124 per night

9. The Yeatman Arrow

Best hotel in Porto for wine lovers

The Yeatman’s star attraction is, undoubtedly, the decanter shaped pool and terrace that allows you to enjoy the view of Porto’s winding streets from the other side of the river. The hotel has six storys, but domineering tower block it is not; each floor is arranged on the banks of the Douro, giving guests a lookout no matter which room they stay in.

Those who visit Porto with a plan to enjoy as many wines as possible will love this property, which is heavily focused on the local tipple; images of vineyards decorate the walls, while there’s a cellar available to tour between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Be sure to check into the Michelin-starred restaurant while you’re there to enjoy the traditional flavors of Portugal. – Abigail Malbon

Address: The Yeatman, Rua do Choupelo, 4400-088 Vila Nova de Gaia Price: Doubles from about $234 per night

10. The Artist

Best hotel in Porto for creatives

Unsurprisingly, art is the focus at this hotel, which focuses on its art college heritage as the theme. Around 150 artworks are on display throughout, and nosier guests will enjoy looking closer at student grades from as far back as the 1960s. Rooms are simple but spacious, but it’s the restaurant, A Escola’s, degustation menu that’s the real star of the show, thanks to the creative dishes on offer. Choose between five or seven dishes, all beautifully presented in keeping with the hotel’s theme of art. – Abigail Malbon

Address : The Artist, R. da Firmeza 49, 4000-228 Porto Price : Doubles from about $148 per night

M.Ou.Co Hotel Porto

11. M.Ou.Co

Best hotel in Porto for music lovers

Opened in April 2022, this hotel is something new for Porto: a music-focused property with a 180-seated or 300-standing concert hall, a music library featuring 600 vinyls for guest use and even a music therapy room. But while there's a focus on music, the final result feels cool rather than gimmicky—think 1970s-inspired decor courtesy of exposed walls and vintage wooden furniture, with leather and rattan furniture (and the odd plant). By request, a complimentary record player, guitar, and keyboard can all be hired from reception to be used in the bedrooms, should you wish to flex your musical muscles during your stay.

Facilities at the hotel include a small pool, which becomes particularly busy in the warmer months—during high season, you'll struggle to secure a lounger. There's a bar serving lunch and drinks (cocktails are particularly good; the blueberry mojito comes highly recommended) while breakfast and supper are served in the hotel's restaurant. Guests are varied, with couples, families and, of course, musicians taking advantage of the affordable room rates.

The motto here is Stay, Listen, Play, but should you wish to explore there's plenty on your doorstep. Found in the up-and-coming cool neighborhood of Bonfim, this property isn't as central as many Porto hotels—but it's worth bearing in mind that the city is very small (it's a pleasant 20-minute walk to São Bento station, for example), so it's actually a great way to see a new side of Porto, particularly if it's not your first time in the city. – Abigail Malbon

Address : R. de Frei Heitor Pinto 65, 4300-252 Porto Price : Rooms from $69

12. Tipografia Do Conto

Best hotel in Porto for affordability

You'll find one of Europe's nicest affordable stays in a 19th century former workshop and warehouse in Porto. Originally used as a printing press, the history of the building is referenced throughout: in the bar, hundreds of independent titles are displayed; the ceilings are engraved with phrases by different artists; and the wooden façade in the courtyard resembles the drawers used for storing fonts. There are only 10 rooms, some face the courtyard, while others overlook the city. There’s no restaurant—breakfast is served in the green-tiled bar—but plenty of hot tables are nearby in the emerging Cedofeita area; try Namban and Early Cedofeita. One of the best things about it, however, is the secret garden with its swimming pool and a hammock strung at one end. It’s perfect for hanging out with a glass of port or Vinho Verde, surrounded only by the sound of birds and a rare moment of stillness in this otherwise happening neighborhood.

An aerial of a hotel.

13. Pestana Palicio do Freixo

Best hotel in Porto for tranquillity

Those who have been to Porto before might not be quite so concerned about seeing the main tourist attractions; in which case the Pestana Palicio, located further down the river, is ideal. Classified in 1910 as a national monument, the restored Baroque-style palace and surrounding gardens are welcoming, with soaring indoor dining areas and spectacular open views of the river.

The hotel has 87 rooms in total, with superior rooms offering a river view. If you stay in summer, it’s a great time to make use of the outdoor pool or to grab a sundowner from the poolside bar. – Abigail Malbon

Address: Pestana Palicio do Freixo, Estrada Nacional 108, 4300-316 Campanhã , Porto Price : Doubles from about $199 per night

Palacio Belmonte, Lisbon

Stately and historic, Palacio Belmonte is a splurge-worthy stay with amenities (sitting rooms, libraries, terraces) fit for a king. The Palace is the oldest building of its kind in the city, once serving as the residence of the Marques d’Atalia, Alvares Cabral and the Earls of Belmonte—something you might be able to intuit from the aristocratic interiors, which blend antique rugs, 18th-century hand-painted tiles, period oil-paintings and preserved Roman walls. There’s no restaurant on-site, but a breakfast is served on a breezy private terrace that overlooks the city’s terracotta rooftops, and all other meals can be ordered from Michelin-starred Belcanto . Spend your days relaxing by the orange tree and herb garden-lined black marble swimming pool, or brushing up on your reading one of two wood-paneled libraries.

Memmo Alfama, Lisbon

Housed in a former shoe polish factory, the Memmo Alfama is a contemporary boutique hotel with major Old World charm. It’s tucked within a cobbled ancient courtyard in the romantic Alfama neighborhood, and sports a sleek and clean-lined design, courtesy of interior designer João Corrêa. The 42 guestrooms are outfitted in wood and taupe tones and have modern bathrooms with polished concrete floors and Portugeuse Saboaria bath products. After exploring the nearby São Jorge Castle and the city’s 12th century cathedral, watch the sunset from the hotel’s rooftop lounge, which has an iridescent red-tile pool, an extensive port wine list, and unobstructed Tagus River views.

L’AND Vineyards, the Alentejo

This high-design wine resort is set among rows of oak trees and gnarled vines in the wine-growing region of Alentejo, less than an hour east of Lisbon. Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan is behind the stone and slate exteriors, whose clean, minimalist lines contrast the wild natural beauty that surrounds. Inside, the atmosphere of understated luxury continues, with earthen tones of brown and taupe, raw textiles, walls of slender wooden slats, black-stained timber flooring, and polished copper orbs which hang from the ceilings at different heights. The focus here is on the wine (there are regular tastings of the vineyards’ own, plus tours of the winemaking facilities), but if you’d rather just kick back and relax, there’s also a subterranean Caudalie spa, and an indoor and outdoor pool, the latter offering breathtaking views of the lake and medieval hilltop castle of Montemor, and a Michelin-starred restaurant with a drool-worthy tasting menu (order the roasted merino lamb with date tangine).

São Lourenço do Barrocal, the Alentejo

A deep sense of history pervades this rustic-luxe hideaway , set on a 200-year-old family-run working farm set between the village of Monsaraz and the vast Alqueva lake. Inside a series of whitewashed, tile-roofed buildings you’ll find farmhouse-chic interiors, which are kitted out in vintage furniture, white walls, pendant lampshades, and communal tables laid with olive oil and sheep’s cheese. Step back in time as you wander through the property’s grounds (all vines, orange groves, and wildflowers meadows). Don’t miss an indulgent treatment at the spa by Austrian brand Susanne Kaufmann.

Torre de Palma, the Alentejo

Food, wine, and beautiful scenery—these are the main draws at Torre de Palma , a historic manor dating back to 1338. The ranch-style building is comprised of 19 antique-filled guest rooms that look out over an Arcadian landscape filled with olives and vines. If you want to learn about viniculture, this is the place to do it: the property hosts numerous wine-centered activities, including vineyard tours, grape picking, wine tastings, and tours of the cellar. More of a foodie? Tuck into Alentejo specialties—Ibierian pork cheeks, Pennyroyal Acorda (bread soup), and octopus alagardo—at the restaurant Basilii, named after the prominent Roman family who once resided in the nearby villa.

Monte da Fornalha, the Alentejo

Time slows down at this 200-year-old country guesthouse , located on a small farm between the city of Estremoz and the village of Borba. The intimate stay features six enormous guestrooms outfitted with threadbare rugs, decorative clay pots, cool slate floors, wooden desks, and shuttered windows with views of the surrounding olive groves and orange trees. Days start with a farmhouse-style breakfast of fresh peaches, olive oil cake, coffee, and thick country bread, followed by delightfully listless afternoons around the Moroccan-style pool. Bikes are available to borrow if you want some exercise to counter all that lounging.

Six Senses Douro Valley

Wine is at the heart of it all at the historic Six Senses , a 19th-century manor house restored for the 21st century by New York-based firm Clodagh Design. Guests can unwind with wine-focused treatments in the spa, attend wine tastings in the library, and sample regional varieties at the on-site restaurant. Take a break from your education in viniculture at the property’s magnificent infinity-edge pool, which looks out over the winding Douro River, or, if you’re feeling adventurous, try aerial yoga in the surrounding forest. Come down from the adrenaline high by retreating to your guest room, where there are oak floors, glass-walled bathrooms, sweeping views of the river, and comfortable beds dressed in soft cotton sheets and topped with wool throws.

Casa Mãe, Lagos

This 19th-century family estate in coastal Lagos is a fresh vision of contemporary Portuguese design—though it operates more like its own tiny community than a boutique hotel. At Casa Mãe , there are 30 individually designed guest rooms spread throughout three houses decorated with local art (think colorful textiles, woodwork, and ceramics), as well as two restaurants with their own organic gardens, a bakery, a farmer’s market, an alfresco movie theater, and even an in-house magazine.

Martinhal Sagres Beach Resort & Hotel, the Algarve

You won’t have to sacrifice style for comfort (or amenities) if you stay at the Martinhal Sagres Beach Resort , a family-friendly stay in the sun-soaked Algarve. The 200-room, ocean-facing hotel features all the kid-approved activities you’d find at a sprawling beach resort (a game room, water sports, five pools) while also cultivating a sense of intimacy and stylishness that you’d expect from a trendy boutique hotel. The low-lying villas and townhouses are done up in natural materials (stone, timber, cork), with massive glass windows and terraces that look out over the Mediterranean. Drop the kids off at adventure club and steal away to the pampering spa for a facial or massage.

There’s not much to do at this charming B&B other than hang out in a deck chair on the veranda. But if you seek a restful, back-to-nature getaway, you’re not going to find a more gloriously isolated spot. The former schoolhouse has five spacious studios decked out in vintage chests, Edison bulb fixtures, succulents, and Victrolas, plus a dining area where breakfast and dinner is prepared. If you want to do some exploring, borrow a bike and pedal out to one of the area’s golden-sand beaches.

It was only a matter of time, but now it seems everybody’s got the memo: Portugal is fabulous. Not only that, it’s cooler, quieter and cheaper than Spain , making it an ideal destination for memorable summer holidays, without breaking the bank.

Lisbon – Portugal’s capital and one of Europe’s sunniest cities – packs a mini-break punch with its dusk-till-dawn bar scene, hip fleamarkets, and beautiful beaches.

Porto , too, wins unexpected ‘wows’ from visitors amazed by the city’s riverfront dining, design boutiques, and old-meets-new architecture. Then you’ve got the cool coastlines of Cascais and Comporta, near Lisbon, and the sun-drenched Algarve, which is an all-time favourite with holidaymakers.

So, now you’ve got an idea of where to go, you just need to decide where to check in. Whether you’re in search of family-friendly digs, great views, foodie havens, stylish spas or relaxing beach breaks, we’ve rounded up our pick of the best hotels in Portugal .

  • Best Porto hotels for style, location and value for money

  • Porto city guide: How to spend two days in Portugal’s second city

The best hotels in Portugal are:

Best family hotel: martinhal, best for big groups: fairways four seasons, best beach hotel: pine cliffs, best for foodies: the yeatman, best city hotel: infante sagres, best pool scene: the one palácio da anunciada, best for views: the oitavos, best spa hotel: quinta da comporta, best hotels in algarve, neighbourhood: sagres.

On the left-hand lounger you might clock Ben Fogle and his brood, on the right a BBC broadcaster with baby – that’s the clientele at this family-focused hotel on the wilder, windier end of the Algarve. Being a haven for posh parents doesn’t equal stuffy, though. Think of Martinhal more like a beach hotel for families who don’t do caravans and kids’ clubs, but instead want contemporary architecture, designer Scandi furniture, trendy restaurants and a surf scene. Accommodation runs from hotel rooms with a cot to mega-villas with private pool and, if you dodge school holidays, there are bargains to be had.

Hotel Amenities

Health & wellbeing, neighbourhood: quinta do lago.

Hen weekend, multi-gen reunion, big birthday – whatever the reason to celebrate, often a hotel doesn’t cut it (too cramped), but nor does a villa (too much housework). Fairways Four Seasons plugs the gap with cottages, apartments and houses scattered among tropical grounds, all of which get to use the hotel-style facilities: breakfast bar; fine dining for grown-ups; pools; gym and spa; bars; even a kids’ club. You’re a meander from the beach, or a short cycle, which is within the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, so you can expect deserted sand spits, pristine lakes, and incredible bird life, rather than the Algarve high rises you might have been expecting.

Price: Seven nights in a two-bed apartment with Jacuzzi from £1,400, shorter stays possible

Neighbourhood: Albufeira

Sometimes you just need a beachfront hotel, where you check in, lounge by the pool for a long weekend, cocktail in hand, before flying home again, heavier and happier. Pine Cliffs is the place: a gorgeous, white-and terracotta clutch of seaside spaces – fish restaurant, beach café, champagne bar, spa, endless pools, tennis courts – that mean you never need to leave. That’s not to say this isn’t authentic Portugal; gorgeous gardens of umbrella pines, cork trees and eucalyptus could only be the Algarve, framing that perfect Atlantic shoreline, where O Pescador awaits with a plate of sardines and Alentejo white wine. No surprise, then, that the Portuguese love this place just as much as the international crowd.

Best hotels in Porto

Neighbourhood: vila nova de gaia.

Owned by a family in the Port trade since 1838, The Yeatman takes its food and drink so seriously, the outdoor swimming pool has been built in the shape of a decanter. Spa treatments involve merlot, honey, or cabernet grape skins, while the best suites have beds built within giant wine barrels. Believe us: you will not go hungry here. The design of the sprawling building is more modern than you might predict for a gourmet destination hotel, but this means Douro River views for all from its position on the hillside among Porto’s old port houses and wharves. This also means reaching Porto centre requires crossing the bridge by foot or shuttle.

Neighbourhood: Centro Porto

Porto’s not the biggest of cities, but it is hilly and cut in two by the River Douro – so the location of Infante Sagres, right in the walkable cultural district, is priceless. Two streets away you have Livraria Lello, an Insta-tastic bookstore and Hogwart’s inspiration to JK Rowling who once lived in Porto. One street closer, you have Rua de Galeria de Paris, a cobbled lane of famed fado bars and drinking dens; and around the corner is Igreja do Carmo church with the most photographed blue tiles in town. The hotel itself is a hub too, with traditional but spacious rooms that make you feel like a Porto resident, and a buzzing courtyard bar that lures locals. There’s a little rooftop plunge pool for sweltering summer days.

  • Best hotels in Lisbon

Neighbourhood: Arroios

The One Palácio da Anunciada has the best hotel pool in the capital, in our opinion, and we’ve done our due diligence (we’ve even got pruney pool fingers to prove it). The classic limestone-tiled number is long enough for lengths, yet still intimate; it’s on the rooftop, but not intimidatingly high; and it’s stylish as hell, yet utterly unpretentious. Quite an achievement when you consider it’s built within a protected 16th-century Portuguese palace.

However, this does mean rooms within the original palace can be small or a little dark, though the restaurant, bar and lounges – with original azulejo tiles, sky-high ceilings, chandeliers and ballroom floors – are majestic spots you won’t want to leave anyway.

Best hotels in Cascais

Neighbourhood: cascais.

Cascais is to Lisbon what Brighton is to London – which means lots of second-homers and creatives who’ve chosen beach life over the rat race. Everyone either surfs, cycles, does yoga or golfs – at The Oitavos, you can do all of the above, while staying in hyper-modern digs. The building looks like a sleek tech HQ on the cliffside, and rooms feel futuristic too, with wall-to-ceiling glass and touch-close everything. Serious spa-goers will love the brilliant balneotherapy (seawater treatments) and spa circuit of jets, pools, and fountains.

Best hotels in Comporta

Neighbourhood: comporta.

Comporta is already as photogenic as coastlines come – a stretch of untouched dunes south of Lisbon, where fish restaurants and chic holiday homes hide in the pine forests behind. Quinta da Comporta matches its location on style: there’s a clear glass-walled swimming pool; thatched whitewashed cottages among long grasses; hand-made baskets designed to be light shades in one suite, or a beach towel receptacle in another. Put it this way: it’s one of those hotels where you don’t want to unpack until you’ve taken a photo of every single vase and scatter cushion. It’s very scene-y, so pack your coolest cossie, though surrounding Carvalhal village is laid-back and lovely, where you can have a night off being ‘seen’ and devour beef patties at Sal Burger.

The best hotels in the Algarve

By Mary Lussiana

Vila Joya

Ah, the Algarve … that particular, feel-good, light, the long expanses of burnt butter sands, blue waters washing against golden limestone cliffs; the smell of sizzling fresh fish, drizzled with local olive oil and the clack-clacking of storks sitting atop the squat olive trees that border the winding roads. There is a wealth of magic in this region, of hidden beaches where fishermen still mend their nets, small white-washed Portuguese villages where the only sound is that of the sonorous church bell, and vineyards where you can stay to taste the wine from the vines around you, immersing yourself in the terroir. And then there is the lively Algarve, where warm nights are filled with music and cocktails and beach parties, days with surfing or riding. There is something for everyone in this region and below are the best hotels from which to do it.

How we choose the best hotels in Algarve

Every hotel on this list has been selected independently by our editors and written by a Condé Nast Traveller journalist who knows the destination and has stayed at that property. When choosing hotels, our editors consider both luxury properties and boutique and lesser-known boltholes that offer an authentic and insider experience of a destination. Hidden in the undulating landscape of the Barrocal removed from the madding crowds of some of Portugals most popular...

Hidden in the undulating landscape of the Barrocal, removed from the madding crowds of some of Portugal’s most popular beach towns, a community of hoteliers are pursuing a quiet shift in the traditional perspective of the Algarve, swapping sand and sea for slowness and simplicity. Leaders of the movement are Marco and Julie Pinto, who were both born to Portuguese parents, and moved here from Paris five years ago to renovate a crumbling old farm. Now also consultants in sustainability and olive-oil-soap producers, they rebuilt it as Casa Brava, an eco B&B with an organic vegetable garden flanked by unbroken thyme fields.

Three former animal stone barns were reimagined as restful rustic retreats filled with repurposed objects sourced from the region’s vintage markets. Sun-speckled terraces – perfect for vegan breakfasts in the morning or a glass of organic wine in the evening – face the biological pool filtered by plants and river stones and trimmed with humming lavender. Nearby is the lively town of Loulé where locals congregate on Saturday for the weekly ritual of gossip, almond tarts and shots of medronho brandy at dive bar O Postigo. The slow life here is alive and well, passed into the hands of new custodians who repurpose ancient rituals in a conscious effort to create an alternative and altogether more sustainable future for the Algarve. Casas da Quinta de Cima

Casas da Quinta de Cima

Opened this summer, the nine little cottages (with bedroom, sitting room with kitchenette, bathroom and large terrace) on this farm estate offer space and tranquillity in the deeply rural eastern Algarve. The beach is a walk away, through orange and lemon trees, past the swimming pool and the prettiest honesty bar ever. Interiors mix luxury touches with retro design and pleasing overall simplicity. From here you can ride to nearby Cacela Velha in time for their fresh haul of oysters, which you can eat in the shade of the old church bell tower, while your horse waits. Doubles from £145 including breakfast.

Bela Vista Hotel

Set in a turn-of-the-century villa overlooking the magnificent Praia de Rocha beach, this jewel of a hotel has preserved its original stained glass, hand-painted tiles and carved wooden staircase, but contemporary décor by Portugal’s acclaimed designer Graça Viterbo weaves bold blues and pop yellows into the whole, creating a jaunty, seaside feel. There is a swimming pool framed by slender palm trees, a L’Occitance Spa and a one-star Michelin restaurant by Chef João Oliveira which deserves to be two stars. Try his dish of tomatoes, basil and camomile with a sorbet of roasted yellow peppers to see what I mean. Doubles from £235 including breakfast.

Casa Mae

More for urban lovers than beach bums, although the beach is only a hop, skip and jump away, Casa Mãe has a young and vibrant buzz to it. There is an all-day restaurant serving local, artisan-sourced cheeses and hams alongside typical regional fare like octopus and squid with fresh herbs and vegetables brought in from the hotel’s own, extensive, garden. The 34 rooms come in three different categories, from cabanas near the swimming pool, complete with hammocks and outside showers to elegant heritage rooms with vintage furniture in the main 19th-century house and contemporary rooms in the Joga da Bolo with futon beds on terracotta floors. Doubles from £145 including breakfast.

Martinhal

Nowhere quite does family fun as well as this flagship of the child-centric Martinhal brand. Situated on the very west of the Algarve, the hotel overlooks the little beach of Martinhal where teens can paddleboard whilst toddlers play in the sand. Comprising 38 hotel rooms, townhouses and villas with private pools, there are swimming pools scattered throughout the resort, as well as tennis courts, bikes to ride and three dedicated kids' clubs. For screen addicts there is a blue room with play stations galore, and family films feature nightly. Best of all perhaps is the Baby Concierge who prepares everything you need before you arrive, allowing you that elusive rest. Doubles from £140 including breakfast.

Morgado do quintão

Morgado do Quintão

This much-loved family winery, now run by the fourth generation of the same family, has recently opened three small cottages and four bedrooms in the renovated main house to tourists who wish to make it their Algarvean base. Clean and cool with muted colours and a simple, period, charm these houses, dotted around the estate are blissfully free of televisions but come with enticing swimming pools. At their centre is a magnificent 2,000-year-old olive tree under which farmer’s lunches and wine tastings are a regular occurrence. A three-bedroom cottage costs from £255 per night inclusive of breakfast, with a three-night minimum stay.

Vila Monte

There is plenty of charm here with courtyards filled with fountains and orange trees and gardens overflowing with bounty for the kitchen. Just 55 rooms are dotted around the lush gardens, their design paying homage to the region’s Moorish heritage with high ceilings lined with straw reeds and the characteristic latticed chimney pots. White-washed bedrooms have driftwood branches where colourful kaftans for the beach hang alongside straw hats. Two swimming pools, a tennis court and a gym are there for the active and a shuttle bus takes you to the nearest beach. Evenings are given over to al fresco cinema and delicious dishes at the rustic Terra Restaurant. Doubles from £255 including breakfast. Doubles from £255 including breakfast.

Vila Vita Parc

Vila Vita Parc

This is the grand dame of the Algarve’s resorts, with something for everyone. Private yacht with which to set sail on the seas? Tick. Two Michelin-star restaurant? Tick. Extraordinary wine cellar? Tick. The country’s only Sisley Spa? Tick. Brilliant kid’s club? Tick. And so, it goes on. The choice of restaurants is huge, ranging from Michelin star dining at Ocean where you really must try Chef Hans Neuner’s sublime dishes to traditional Portuguese favourites at Adega, Japanese teppanyaki and sushi at Mizu and tuna tartare and salmon poke bowls, next to the infinity pool at Whale. They have their own private beach, great shops and tip-top service throughout the 202 rooms and villas dotted around the 54 acres of sub-tropical garden. Doubles from £187.

The best new hotels in the world: 2024 Hot List

This gem of a private villa with just 13 rooms is one of the Algarve’s best-kept secrets but has long been a favourite of the cognoscenti. Perched on a clifftop, it is ridiculously romantic, and its breezy, beautiful setting will pull you back time and time again. Food is memorable, from the two Michelin-star restaurant with elegant dishes such as John Dory with seaweed and beurre blanc to the fun, buzzy and very cool Vila Joya Sea on the beach, where sushi jostles with tiradito behind raw coir rope blinds and cocktails from amber mojito to smoked & tasty are shaken up as sundowners. Doubles from £510 including breakfast.

W Algarve

The W Algarve

Just opened and already making the waves it promised it would, The W plays to its own beat. DJ booths – clad in iridescent mermaid scales obviously – can be found on the wet deck by the (heated) pool, in the W Lounge where the décor of turquoise and mirrors mimics the glinting Algarvian coast and up at the roof-top Sea Sky Bar. Try the homemade cheese ravioli with Piedmont truffle cream in chic restaurant Paper Moon or indulge in a lobster and crab roll at the W Lounge Bar. In between times stroll to the beach, dip your toes in your private plunge pool or head to the spa for a serious make-over before dancing the night away. Doubles from £255.

At destination Spa Botánico, treatments draw inspiration from nature including the two-hour Manos Santas Ritual. Outdoor activities like sailing, kayaking and hiking arranged through the Jean Michel Cousteau Ambassadors of the Environment program are also popular here. El Pretexto frequently hosts pop-up dinners, too, so there's a good chance one of Puerto Rico's best chefs could be in the kitchen whipping up traditional Puerto Rican dishes like sofrito and pasteles, using ingredients from the farm. Accommodations—including five guest rooms split between two villas—are rustic but comfortable, with farm-style furniture and fine linens.

This two-story villa has an elegant residential feel with just five tastefully decorated accommodations, including two oceanfront rooms, one pool studio and two sea view apartments. Outdoor common areas provide ample space to relax and share a similar boho aesthetic with colorful rugs and woven basket light fixtures. Popular surf breaks are just a mile away, while kayaks and standup paddle boards can be rented onsite. The hotel’s staff are happy to arrange private yoga sessions, candlelit dinners on the beach and surf lessons, but lounging beside the oceanfront pool or leisurely swims at the beach are encouraged, too. Tres Sirenas doesn’t have a restaurant of its own, but breakfast is included and there’s a pint-sized bar for guests. Given its popularity and petite size, minimum stay requirements include four nights during high season and a full week over major holidays.

What Is The Best Area To Stay In Puerto Rico?

The capital city of San Juan provides a sense of having almost everything Puerto Rico has to offer at your fingertips: walkable historical landmarks, plus easy access to great beaches, vibrant nightlife, restaurants and a new white hot art scene to rival that of Miami. Its proximity to other regions for day trips makes it an attractive option too—whether hopping on a ferry over to one of the Spanish Virgin Islands, driving south to second largest city, Ponce, or east to Río Grande for a round of golf at the Rio Mar Country Club.

What Side Of Puerto Rico Is Best?

With six key regions across the island, there is a “best side” for every type of trip to Puerto Rico. Surfers will dig the waves and laid-back vibes of Rincón on the westernmost side of the island, while nature lovers will love exploring the eastern side of the island, including the municipality of Rio Grande and the plentiful hiking trails and waterfalls within El Yunque National Forest. For coffee culture and an authentic hacienda experience, the central mountains are popular. While historic city Ponce, or the ‘Pearl of the South,’ is home to important art museums, the tropical off-shore isle Vieques rewards with laid-back beach bars, the world’s brightest bioluminescent bay, and free roaming horses.

Is Puerto Rico Expensive To Visit?

With prices similar to the U.S., Puerto Rico might not be the cheapest destination in Latin America, but the island ranks as one of the most affordable to visit in the Caribbean—and one of its most desirable. High season runs November through April when hotel prices peak, while low season coincides with hurricanes and inclement weather between June and November, making it a more economical time to plan vacations.

About Keri Bridgwater, Your Puerto Rico Guide

I have a soft spot for writing about hotels but some of my favorite travel assignments include riding out in search of wild horses in Arizona, flying in the back of a USAF subsonic trainer jet over Huntington Beach and driving luxury cars around Paris and Madrid. Puerto Rico piqued my interest after reading The Rum Diary and while I explored several corners of the island, chasing waves in Rincón tops my must dos for a return trip. Based in San Diego, I’m often on assignment and have reported on the post-pandemic reopening of Phuket for Marie Claire , why horses draw visitors to Iceland for Fodor’s Travel , the pros of skiing in Switzerland for Matador Network and the best hotels in Lake Tahoe for Travel + Leisure .

The Royal Sonesta Kauai Resort

While still beautiful and rustic, more recently Kauai has seen a rise in posh new hotels, including the stunning 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay.

Ready to plan your next trip to Kauai? Read on to discover the best hotels and resorts in the region, from opulent five-star lodgings to budget-friendlier rooms, plus plenty of choices for residential-style stays with room for larger groups. As a travel journalist who has explored all over Hawaii for work and leisure many times over the last 15 years, I curated this list with expert recommendations from Travel + Leisure editors, contributors, and readers, along with winners from our World’s Best Awards .

1 Hotel Hanalei Bay

This is the island’s posh new addition, with a focus on wellness and a next-level spa and fitness center.

Be prepared to splash out for rooms here, with starting rates in the four figures.

Streams and gardens dot the property, where there are 252 airy rooms, including 51 suites.

“When it comes to setting, this was one of the most stunning hotels I've stayed in. You can't beat its position on beautiful Hanalei Bay, overlooking Makana Mountain and the start of the Na Pali Coast. It's a wellness-focused hotel, and the spa, gym, and wellness programming are top notch. (But that doesn't mean you can't indulge in some Mai Tais; we even learned a recipe we now use at home.) 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is extremely romantic — you'll wake up to rainbows most mornings — and it's where my fiancé and I chose to celebrate our engagement. Still, I think it could be just as ideal for a girls' getaway.”

Know Before You Go

Consider renting a car.

Kauai is one of the more remote Hawaiian islands, so the easiest way to get around is with your own car. Rideshare and taxis work too, but they can be expensive and not as plentiful as on the mainland. Some hotels run shuttles on a schedule, and there is also a public bus system.

Understand the different regions of Kauai before booking accommodations

Different regions of Kauai offer different experiences, so take this into account before booking and consider splitting your time between several accommodations if you want a varied experience. The main regions with accommodations are the North Shore (Princeville, Hanalei), east coast (more densely populated), and South Shore (home to family-friendly beaches and more affordable vacation lodgings).

Expect precipitation

Kauai is generally warm and tropical year round, with substantial rain. The dry season runs from April to October, and the months between November and March are considered the wet months. December and January — popular months for travel from the mainland — see the most rain.

How We Chose These Hotels

Alesandra Dubin is a travel and lifestyle journalist who has visited Hawaii for work and leisure many times over the last 15 years (most recently getting stuck in the state in January for days after the grounding of Alaska Airlines’ 737 Max 9 fleet). The hotels on this list were chosen based on her expertise and research as well as the firsthand accounts of Travel + Leisure editors and other contributors. Several of these hotels have also been voted into their respective categories in the World’s Best Awards by T+L readers. All of our hotel recommendations also align with our T+L Hotel Values .
