Our First Time Aboard Norwegian Epic Mediterranean Cruise

It took a long time to convince my husband to try a new way of travelling, but I think he’s finally hooked.  We have done our research, read blogs, Norwegian Epic reviews and got some advice from expert cruisers. We finally decided that the Norwegian Epic cruise was the best cruise for us.  When choosing a cruise we first looked at where we wanted to go.

An NLC Mediterranean cruise was always on my bucket list, and with some amazing ports of call – we knew we had to book the Norwegian Epic Mediterranean Cruise, one of the best Mediterranean cruise lines.

There are so many great Norwegian European cruises to choose from.  We had many misconceptions about cruising, and we were completely surprised. Check out my Instagram story highlights from my trip.

We booked our Norwegian Mediterranean Cruise with Air Canada Vacations as they offer so many advantages.  Air Canada Vacations guarantees the lowest airfare, reliable travel, flexible payment options, and other great features.

You can also book hotel nights before or after your cruise with Air Canada Vacations and tailor your vacation with hundreds of worldwide cruise itineraries.  We arrived in Barcelona a day before our cruise and stayed at the Hotel HCC Regente .

History Of NCL Epic

The Norwegian Epic was built in 2010 and was the 3rd-largest cruise ship in the world when it was built! With 4200 passengers and 1750 crew, it’s also the equivalent of a 16-story high building and has its own towering water slides on the top deck! The ship was refurbished in 2015.

We thought a cruise ship on the Western Mediterranean would leave us claustrophobic, with nowhere to go. This could not be further from the truth.  There is so much to see and do on the ship that you may not even get a chance to see everything!

Checking in with Norwegian Epic

We arrived at the Barcelona cruise port to check-in for our cruise. Check-in on the NCL Epic is similar to an airline check-in apart from getting your photo taken. We were issued a room key card which was also used for all purchases on board the cruise ship and was our ID card.

We had a misconception that it would take hours to check-in on a cruise ship.  There were lineups but they moved quickly.

Norwegian Epic Rooms

When booking a room on your Norwegian Epic cruise of course you have many choices.  I always pictured cruise staterooms to be extremely small. We were lucky to stay in a mid-ship balcony stateroom that features floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open to a private balcony.

This room can accommodate up to three people with two lower beds that convert into a queen-sized bed, and a sitting area that converts to additional bedding to accommodate one more passenger. We were so surprised how spacious our room was.

It had a closet and several compartments for storage. Our room had a unique bathroom layout where every area is separate, including the shower and vanity sink.  It’s a great layout, as my husband and I didn’t have to battle it out in the bathroom for space.

Our room was also equipped with a small coffee maker, great for that quick cup of java when you first wake up and a mini-bar fridge. (Careful, the items in the mini-bar fridge are usually not included in your cruise rate and are usually an additional charge).

No need to pack the basics as the shower is equipped with a wall dispenser with body wash and moisturizing shampoo as well as a hairdryer, leaving more space in your luggage for souvenirs.  We were located on deck 14 mid-ship, the perfect location as we were one floor below the Garden Cafe.

If you are looking to add a bit of luxury on your cruise, you can always opt for the luxurious Haven Suites. They have penthouse suites with balconies, the deluxe owner’s Haven Suite with a separate bedroom, living room and dining room, or the two-bedroom family villa with balcony.

If you book a Haven Suite you get to use the Concierge Lounge and private restaurant and bar as well as butler and concierge services……sweet!!

We were really surprised to hear that they offer studios for solo travelers as well as their own lounge.  This is great for solo travelers, no more single supplementary charges.

NCL Epic Deck Plans

The Norwegian Epic has 19 decks…….pretty much the size of a building!  The rooms are located on decks 8 – 17. There was so much to explore on this ship and we definitely got our workout in everyday exploring.  It’s important to know what is located on each deck as you can decide how close you want your stateroom to be to all the action or how far away.

Also, because there is so much to explore you don’t want to miss anything…….trust me, if you don’t know about it you probably won’t find it on your NLC Mediterranean cruise.

Norweigan Cruiseline Freestyle Dining

My husband and I always heard stories of friends who have been on other cruises and they had set times for dinner every night in the same restaurant.  We did not like the idea of a set time to eat dinner. We wanted to have the option to eat when and where we wanted.

Norwegian Cruise lines offer freestyle dining.  There are no fixed dining times or pre-assigned seating giving us the freedom on our vacation to try different places to eat on board and experience all of the dining options.

Norwegian Epic Restaurants

The food! We really had no idea what we were missing.  We always thought that cruise ship dining was all about the long lineups and mediocre food.  NCL is known for amazing dining and has over 20 different dining options on board but we had no idea that NCL Epic would be a foodie heaven.

All the restaurants were amazing, yes even the buffet!  The cruise fare includes two main dining rooms where you can order from a menu (they change nightly), a self-serve buffet that is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, a variety of casual cafes, grills and on-the-go choices.

In addition to all of the complimentary dining options available, Norwegian Epic also offers dining at specialty restaurants. For a cover charge, you can experience a world of different cuisines and atmosphere – from the finest French Bistro at sea to casual authentic Italian dishes served in a Trattoria-style setting to the first at sea Brazilian Churrasqueira.

We tried to enjoy as many of the restaurants as possible.

Garden Café Deck 15

The Garden Cafe is a buffet restaurant, where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner with wonderful views.  They have different themes every night so you are never eating the same meal again unless you want to. We loved the freshly prepared made-to-order omelets in the morning.

Great Outdoors Deck 15

The Great Outdoors is located just outside of the Garden Cafe but located outdoors to enjoy the fresh ocean air and a view of the Aqua Park This is a buffet that is open during breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Taste Deck 5

One of the twin inclusive al-a-carte restaurants we dined at was Taste restaurant that serves contemporary cuisine, with menus changing daily. This was a great restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

best norwegian mediterranean cruise

The Manhattan Room  Deck 6

We enjoyed dinner at another inclusive restaurant, the Manhattan Room.  The ambiance is like we were in a private New York City supper club with panoramic ocean views from the two-story, floor-to-ceiling windows. There was also nightly entertainment.

best norwegian mediterranean cruise

O’Sheehans Deck 6

O’Sheehans is open 24 hours a day!  They have some great Irish pub classics as well as popular draft beers.  We enjoyed some of the popular comfort food menu items such as Prime Rib and All-You-Can-Eat Ribs.  You can also enjoy a game of pool, or relax while taking in a sports game.

best norwegian mediterranean cruise

La Cucina Deck 14

At La Cucina, we enjoyed fine Italian dining with spectacular ocean views.  They offered some great Italian classics such as pasta carbonara and lobster fettuccine.   This was one of the specialty dining à la carte restaurants with a cover charge.

best norwegian mediterranean cruise

We were looking forward to a steak dinner at the popular Cagney’s Steak House.  This restaurant has a selection of premium choice cuts of Angus beef perfectly prepared and we also wanted to try their famous Parmesan truffle fries.  This was definitely one of our favorite restaurants on the ship.

best norwegian mediterranean cruise

Moderno Churrascaria Deck 7

We loved the unique experience at the authentic Brazilian steakhouse.  We started with the large impressive salad bar. Honestly, I was pretty full after the salad bar so I would highly recommend pacing yourself, as you need to save room for the skewers of slow-roasted meats carved tableside by the Pasadores and of course the side dishes.

best norwegian mediterranean cruise

Atrium Café & Bar Deck 5

The Atrium was our go-to for pre-dinner cocktails and people watching.  It is a grand space that offers three-deck vertical views and a two-story tv screen.

Norwegian Epic Award-Winning Entertainment

Norwegian Cruise lines are known for their award-winning entertainment.  We were expecting the usual cheesy entertainment you would get while staying at an all-inclusive resort – but boy, were we wrong!  You can’t miss the entertainment, it will blow you away.

best norwegian mediterranean cruise

Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical (Complimentary)

This international hit sensation is based on the smash-hit movie. PRISCILLA is the heart-warming, uplifting adventure of three friends who hop aboard a battered old bus searching for love and friendship and end up finding more than they could have ever dreamed of.

With a dazzling array of outrageous Tony and Oscar Award-winning costumes and a hit parade of dance-floor favorites.

Burn the Floor (Complimentary)

Burn the Floor sizzles onboard Norwegian Epic! An international championship cast shows off their best ballroom dance moves with plenty of European flair. From Grand Viennese waltzes to the sensual Tango and provocative Rumba, experience all their passion as they heat up the stage.

The dancers were so amazing and really make this one of the best Norwegian Epic activities.

Cirque Dreams Epicurean (additional fee)

We did not see the Cirque Dreams Epicurean show and now I’m kicking myself.  I have heard so many wonderful things about it and will definitely opt to see this show next time.  This dinner theater takes places in the SpiegelTent, a custom-designed venue that resembles a circus tent.

A three-course dinner is served prior to the main show. The NCL website describes the show as “An Avant-garde world of awe-inspiring feats and colorful eccentricities awaits your discovery in this captivating show.”

Norwegian Epic Activities

We thought a full day at sea meant we were going to be so bored… what can we possibly do?  Boy, was I wrong.

Norwegian Epic has enough onboard activities to fill every minute of your cruise. The best thing is that you can do as little or as much as you want.  Every night at turndown service, a newsletter is delivered to the room with a timetable of activities for the next day……for every hour of the day!! There is an Aqua Park with a 200-foot slide, the only bowl slide at sea.

There is also Spice H20, an adults-only beach club at the back of the ship. If you are really looking for some pampering then you can even book a session at the Mandara Spa.  There really is something for everyone.

best norwegian mediterranean cruise

Suit up and splash down at the first ever Aqua Park. There are two pools, five hot tubs, a kid’s pool, three multi-story water slides including the 200-foot Epic Plunge.

Bliss Ultra Lounge – Bowling Alley

During the day, all ages are welcome to bowl. At night, guests 18 and older enjoy funky lighting that illuminates the neon-colored bowling balls and decor to create an atmosphere that is full of energy.

Pulse Fitness Centre

Enjoy working out on vacation? Visit the Pulse fitness center with great workout equipment including treadmills, ellipticals, and free weights or even yoga, pilates and spinning.  We walked through and couldn’t believe how many people were in the fitness center…….love the dedication.

The Epic Casino

Try your luck at the largest, elegant, full-action casino that offers high-roller ambiance. They offer poker, blackjack, roulette, craps and hundreds of slot machines.

The Sports Complex has two decks to play on with a full-sized basketball court, rock climbing wall, the first-ever rappelling wall at sea and a 24-foot enclosed climbing cage.

Soak up the sun by day around the pool and enjoy the outdoor buffet at the adults-only Ibiza-inspired beach club at the back of the ship. The entertainment is non-stop, as the pool floor rises to become a dance floor at night.

Norwegian Epic Mediterranean Cruise Itinerary

Let’s not forget about the Norwegian Epic itinerary! Where else can you enjoy 6 dream destinations in one week without having to pack and unpack? It was refreshing to visit a new destination every morning, without having to pack up all of our belongings!

It was wonderful to leave and explore for the day and be able to return to the ship and relax in our state-room. The Norwegian Epic itinerary had all the stops we were looking for on a Western Mediterranean cruise that included some dream destinations. This is the ultimate Norwegian Epic Mediterranean cruise itinerary to see some of the top destinations in Europe.

Norwegian Epic Ports:

Day Two: At Sea

Catching sunlight and lazing on the NCL deck is one of the most fun things to do during this cruise!

Day Three: Naples, Italy

On day three, we docked in Naples and took a shore excursion out to Sorrento and Positano . It has always been a dream to visit this stunning coast – and it was beautiful! I would highly recommend stopping in Positano on your day trip as this is probably one of the best Amalfi towns to visit.

best norwegian mediterranean cruise

Day Four: Civitavecchia, Italy

Day four, we docked in Rome.  We took a guided excursion in Roma visiting landmarks, having lunch and trying the famous cacio e pepe pasta and touring the Coliseum. Although you may be limited on time, here are some great places to eat while in Rome.

(You might also like this 4 day Rome itinerary if you have a chance to stay longer.)

Day Five: Livorno, Italy

From Livorno we traveled through the very scenic Tuscany region for our tour to our dream destination Cinque Terre (five villages). Our first stop to Vernazza was so colorful and cozy. Then to Riomaggiore which was so spectacular and so memorable. The Cinque Terre beaches are so beautiful. This is definitely a dream destination.

Day Six: Cannes, France

We strolled through the playground of the rich and famous, Cannes then onto a short train ride to visit one of our favorite cities in Europe, Monte Carlo. This city is incredibly scenic and easy to get around, with one city bus circling the entire center core.

Check out our luxury getaway to the   Fairmont Monte Carlo Hotel

best norwegian mediterranean cruise

Day Seven: Palma de Mallorca, Spain

One short bus ride from this port and we were walking to the historic old town. This city, more than any other port of call on our 7 day Mediterranean cruise, was such a pleasant surprise because we didn’t know much about it.

As the name implies, the entire area is gifted with majestic palm trees and the most charming narrow streets lined with amazing cafes, restaurants, and shops. It is also one of the best destinations for winter sun in Europe .

best norwegian mediterranean cruise

Day Eight: Barcelona

Finally, we got off at the Norwegian Epic Barcelona dock. I can’t believe we waited this long to experience our first-time cruise. It really is a wonderful way to travel and see so many different destinations as well as enjoying all the wonderful amenities available on the ship. This is one of our favorite Norweigan cruises !

Some of these amenities you won’t even be able to find at a resort, making this a truly epic cruise. The gourmet dining really was a highlight for us.  It didn’t matter where you dined, the food was amazing and the service outstanding!

Throughout our cruise, we were so surprised at the level of service from all the staff.  Everyone was so friendly and always smiling. We are most definitely cruising with Norwegian Cruise lines again and can’t wait to bring our daughters with us.

Booking The Norwegian Epic Cruise

Norwegian Cruise has some great deals available, depending on when you book.

The best time to go on the Norwegian Epic cruise is between April to June, and September to October. This is when the weather is best and the sun is out! Traveling during winter will still be fun, as there are plenty of indoor activities to see, both on the boat and at each docking point, but nothing beats some vitamin D.

Remember to have your ID with you for booking in, and don’t miss the departure time!

Call 1 866 529-2079 or your local travel professional and one of Air Canada Vacations specialized cruise agents can help answer all your questions and help choose the right cruise package for you.

A Norwegian Western Mediterranean cruise is well worth it!

Final Thoughts On Our Norwegian Mediterranean Cruise

The Norwegian Epic Mediterranean cruise was such a memorable getaway that we will always remember and recommend highly to friends and family.  A big thank you to Air Canada Vacations and the Norwegian Cruise Lines for a memorable trip and the best Mediterranean cruise we’ve experienced so far.

9 places in Europe you can discover during an NCL Mediterranean Cruise

1. lisbon, portugal.

a stone, memorial arch-like, historical building and visitor attraction in Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon , the sun-kissed jewel of Portugal , beckons travellers with its irresistible blend of old-world charm, modern vibrancy and undeniable good vibes. Depending on which NCL cruise you select for your Mediterranean vacation, Lisbon will either be a stop along your journey or will most likely be your departure port. If it’s the latter, then I highly recommend arriving in Lisbon at least one day before your cruise embarkment date so you have enough time to explore one of the best cities in Europe.

The best way to get around Lisbon is via tram or walking — although it’s very hilly in some areas, so make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes! Otherwise, ordering an Uber is easy and affordable, usually no more than 5€ for each trip. Start your day by taking in the panoramic views from São Jorge Castle , immersing yourself in centuries of history. Wander through the cobbled streets of Alfama , Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhood, and soak in its charming and bohemian atmosphere. Make sure to stop by Miradouro de Santa Luzia for one of the best views across the city!

Next, hop on the iconic Tram 28 for a scenic ride through the city’s iconic sights, passing by beautiful landmarks like Sé de Lisboa Cathedral and the picturesque Bairro Alto district. Treat yourself to some delicious pastéis de nata, Portugal’s famous custard tarts, you’ll find them just about anywhere across the city, however my favourite pastry shop is Manteigaria . In the afternoon, head to Belém to marvel at the majestic Jerónimos Monastery and the iconic Belém Tower , both UNESCO World Heritage sites. And as golden hour hits, it’s time to end the day with a visit to the iconic Pink Street , which comes alive at night with a plethora of bars and clubs. For a more laid-back vibe, head to one of Lisbon’s rooftop bars, I recommend Mama Shelter , Sky Bar or Java Rooftop . Or do what the locals do and head to any Miradouro (viewpoint) in the city, grab a beer and watch the sunset.

2. Granada (Malaga), Spain

Alhambra Palace

While there is plenty to do and see in both Granada and Malaga , if there’s one stop you make during your time in Andalusia, then you absolutely need to visit the Alhambra ! Easily one of the most beautiful UNESCO World Heritage sites in Europe, the Alhambra is a stunning palace and fortress complex filled with Islamic architecture, intricate Moorish detailing, tranquil courtyards, stunning gardens and enchanting views of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The best way to get here is to book the ‘ Granada On Your Own ’ shore excursion with Norwegian Cruise Line. Included in this tour is a bus transfer from the ship to the centre of Granada. When you arrive, immediately walk to the nearest taxi rank and ask your driver to take you straight to the Alhambra entrance. Make sure to book your entrance tickets in advance (at least a day before) and allocate three hours to explore the Alhambra and its scenic gardens before heading to meet your transfer back to the ship. There’s an epic array of activities and shore excursions available in Granada and Malaga with Norwegian Cruise Line depending on your travel style. If you’re more of an adventure junkie, try kayaking along the Cliffs of Maro-Cerro Gordo , hike the King’s Path 325 feet above the Guadalhorce River or race through the Montes de Malaga Natural Park in a 4×4 vehicle made for exhilarating off-road adventure. For something more slow-paced, you’ll enjoy a gastronomy tour of Malaga or a leisurely drive across Spain’s gorgeous Costa del Sol to Gibraltar .

3. Ibiza, Spain

small fishing boats on turquoise coloured water in a small cove

Don’t make the mistake of assuming Ibiza is just a party island, this Mediterranean gem has so much natural beauty and relaxing island spots to discover during your NCL cruise vacation. Start your day by immersing yourself in Ibiza’s rich history at Dalt Vila , the UNESCO-listed old town which is only a 20-minute walk from the port of Ibiza. Afterwards, catch a 10-15 minute taxi to either Playa d’en Bossa or Playa de Talamanca , two nearby beach paradises where you can bask in the sun and dip your toes in the crystal-clear waters. Find your way back to the old town and have dinner at La Oliva – a chic Mediterranean restaurant, arrive when they open at 6.30 pm to experience the atmospheric al fresco dining Spain is famous for. End your evening with cocktails at S’Escalinata and watch the sunset before returning to the port. Another option is to rent a car for the day, giving you the freedom to discover the island’s hidden treasures. The best way to do this is to get a taxi directly to Ibiza Airport from the port, pick up your rental vehicle and hit the road. Head to the stunning beaches of Cala Conta or Cala Salada , renowned for their turquoise waters and postcard-worthy surroundings. For an unforgettable lunch experience in Ibiza, I highly recommend indulging in the laid-back luxury of Amante Ibiza and the chic ambience of Cotton Beach Club Ibiz a. Drive to the local’s favourite sunset spot, Mirador des Vedrà for mesmerising views of the mystical rocky island Es Vedrà , off Ibiza’s western coast. Then drop your car back to the airport, taxi back to the port and you’re ready to continue sailing on your epic European cruise.

4. Palma (Majorca), Spain

Basílica de Santa María de Mallorca

There’s a plethora of activities to do in Palma , the capital city of the Balearic Islands. Begin your adventure by exploring the imposing Basílica de Santa María de Mallorca , a masterpiece of Gothic architecture that dominates the city’s skyline. For beach lovers, the sandy shores of Playa de Palma or Cala Major beckon with crystal-clear waters and relaxation, or immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of the promenade along Palma’s harbour. Embrace the island’s culture by visiting local markets, trying authentic Mallorcan cuisine and the famous ensaïmada pastries. The easiest and most convenient way to explore Palma is getting a ‘ Palma De Mallorca Attractions Pass ‘ (available via Norwegian Cruise Line) which includes transfers to/from the ship, City Sightseeing Hop On Hop Off Bus, complimentary sangria tasting and free entry to  Palma’s best attractions including Palma Cathedral , Es Baluard Museum and Bellver Castle . The hop-on-hop-off bus stops at all the main attractions so you can explore at ease and at your own pace.

If you want a simple drop-and-flop activity, I recommend the ‘ Palma Views & Beach break ‘ shore excursion which takes you to the pristine beach, Playa de Palmanova , located in the south-west of Majorca. This beach is considered to be one of the most attractive ones on the island with clean, white sandy beaches and glistening turquoise-blue water.

5. Barcelona, Spain

Sagrada Familia

Barcelona , the vibrant capital of Catalonia, is a must-visit destination for anyone embarking on a Mediterranean cruise holiday. Marvel at Antoni Gaudí ‘s architectural masterpieces, explore the winding streets of the Gothic Quarter, immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of La Rambla and eat your way through delectable tapas and sample Spain’s famous sparkling Cava.

The best way to see Barcelona’s highlights on an NCL Mediterranean Cruise is with a  hop-on-hop-off bus tour starting at the iconic Sagrada Familia , giving you at least 7 hours to explore Barcelona at your own pace. Make sure to book timed entry tickets to Gaudi’s famous church in advance to avoid missing out. I recommend buying tickets via the official Sagrada Familia mobile app a few days before your visit. Other breathtaking Gaudi landmarks not to miss out: Park Güell , Casa Batlló and Casa Milà . If you’ve previously visited Barcelona, on your second visit, try exploring the city’s lesser-known hidden gems like Casa Vicens (the first house Gaudi designed), Palau de la Música Catalana and Bunkers del Carmel for the best views across Barcelona. From the port, a taxi will cost around 10-20€ to the centre of Barcelona. From a metro station, you can buy a 48-hour travel card for £14.76 which will let you go on any metro, bus or tram in Barcelona. For some reason a 24-hour pass isn’t available; however this 48-hour pass is a fair price and makes it easy to get around quickly. Alternatively, consider one of NCL’s popular shore excursions to the nearby famous Montserrat Monastery or unwind with a gourmet tour, wine tasting and lunch at Caves Llopart Vineyards .  See more: Top things to do in Barcelona

6. Provence (Marseille), France

Charming colourful medieval street in Provence

Provence , a sun-kissed region in the south of France, offers a delightful mix of relaxation and cultural exploration and is famous for its lavender fields, fairy-tale villages, and delicious cuisine. Wander through the enchanting streets of villages like Gordes and Roussillon , where pastel-coloured houses dot the landscapes. Indulge in the region’s world-renowned wines and taste traditional Provençal dishes at charming cafes and bistros. From exploring ancient Roman ruins in Arles to strolling along the vibrant markets of Aix-en-Provence , every corner of this idyllic region will leave you enchanted.

Norwegian Cruise Line offers an array of tours in Provence, including an 8-hour tour of Gordes & Roussillon or an alternate tour through Avignon & Aix-en-Provence . If your cruise is visiting during the lavender season (mid-June to mid-August), you’ll definitely want to visit the Lavender Museum in Coustellet , along with three medieval villages in the Luberon area of Provence.

7. Nice/Monaco (Villefranche), Franc e

Colourful seaside town

The French Riviera , also known as the Côte d’Azur , is a glamorous and picturesque destination that should be on every traveller’s bucket list during a Mediterranean cruise. Stretching along the stunning Mediterranean coastline, this region boasts some of the world’s most iconic destinations, including Cannes , Nice , and Saint-Tropez . With its sparkling azure waters, sandy beaches, and luxurious resorts, the French Riviera exudes an irresistible allure that has attracted celebrities and jet-setters for decades. The port of Villefranche-sur-Mer , where your cruise ship arrives, should not be overlooked. I would recommend spending at least an hour exploring the colourful alleyways and charming harbour and waterfront promenade filled with charming bistros and bars. In fact, you could easily spend the day here and take a few hours to relax at the stunning beach, Plage des Marinieres .

From Villefranche-sur-Mer, you can head east and catch a 28-minute 5€ train directly to Menton or head west and get a quick 7-minute 2€ train to Nice . You could easily fit in a visit to both Menton and Nice during your cruise stop, however, if you have to pick just one, I would recommend Menton as it has a better beach and undeniably breathtaking scenery with its pastel-coloured buildings. If you prefer to have someone else sort out the travel arrangements for your day in the Côte d’Azur, NCL offer a Monaco & Èze sightseeing tour, a Nice highlights & wine tasting experience, as well as a tour to the hilltop village of Saint Paul de Vence , all with transfers to/from the port included.

8. Florence/Pisa (Livorno), Italy

Florence Cathedral

When you book an NCL Mediterranean cruise that stops in Livorno , you are literally spoilt for choice when it comes to options for exploring some of the most iconic and scenic destinations in Italy. It’s almost impossible to decide between Florence , Tuscany , Cinque Terre or Pisa , however fortunately for you, I’m here to help you make that decision.

If you love history & art, you’ll fall in love with Florence and its Renaissance charm and timeless beauty. Visit the iconic Florence Cathedral and marvel at its majestic dome and stunning frescoes. Walk through the historic streets to the Uffizi Gallery , home to works by Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli. Marvel at Michelangelo’s statue of David a t the Accademia Gallery . Stroll across Ponte Vecchio , a medieval bridge adorned with artisan shops that spans the Arno River.  For a taste of authentic Florentine cuisine, savour some delicious pasta at 4 Leoni and local gelato (my favourite is Sbrino !). And don’t forget to visit one of Florence’s many Buchetta del vino (wine windows) dotted throughout the city where you can order a glass of wine through these small 17th-century wooden windows.

If you love wine, the rolling hills in the Tuscan countryside are calling your name with its vineyards, idyllic landscapes and charming medieval towns. Norwegian Cruise Line offers an array of gourmet tours in Tuscany where you’ll visit the vineyards where Sangiovese grapes are grown before tasting your way through the region’s best Chianti wines, accompanied by a typical Italian lunch consisting of eggplant parmigiana, bruschetta, finocchiona salami, pecorino cheeses and olive oil. If you love the beach & coastal views, a visit to Cinque Terre is a must! Consisting of five charming villages perched on the cliffs of the Italian Riviera, Cinque Terre offers a postcard-perfect scene of colourful houses, terraced vineyards, and pristine beaches. Whether you hike the scenic trails that connect the villages, take a leisurely boat ride along the coast, relax at Monterosso al Mare ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣’s famous beach or devour the famous fried seafood cones from Tutti Fritti in Riomaggiore , there is truly something for everyone in Cinque Terre⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣. I recommend booking Norwegian’s ‘ Cinque Terre On Your Own ‘ shore excursion which includes a transfer from the ship to the picturesque village of Vernazza (which inspired Disney’s Luca) and will give you the best part of the day to explore the region. From Vernazza , it’s incredibly easy to get to the other 4 villages via train, with quick 5-10 minute journeys between, just buy a day pass from one of the stations.

See more: 15 incredible things to do in Cinque Terre

And if you love medieval towers that lean approximately 15 feet (4.5 metres) from the perpendicular, then you’ll LOVE Pisa . All jokes aside, a visit to the town of Pisa should only be considered if you’ve already visited Florence, Tuscany and Cinque Terre otherwise I can’t promise you won’t be disappointed. Besides the tower, there honestly isn’t much to see in the city of Pisa. That being said, if you want to tick off the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa from your bucket list (and hey I don’t blame you, I did too), then consider visiting Pisa in one of Norwegian Cruise Line’s combined tours with Florence and Lucca.

9. Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy

Colosseum in Rome

We all know Rome wasn’t built in a day and equally one day isn’t nearly enough time to visit all the iconic landmarks in one of the most visited cities in the world. If your Norwegian Mediterranean cruise journey ends in the port of Civitavecchia , then I highly recommend extending your stay in Europe for 1-3 days to properly experience the magic of Rome.

From the awe-inspiring Colosseum and the grandeur of the Vatican City to the charming piazzas and delectable Italian cuisine, Rome offers a mesmerizing blend of ancient wonders and modern delights. If you do find yourself with just one day to explore the wonders of Rome, I recommend kicking off your whistlestop tour at the Colosseum, immersing yourself in its rich history and imagining the grand gladiator battles of the past. Stroll through the nearby Roman Forum to witness the ruins of once-magnificent structures that shaped the ancient world.

Next, make your way to the awe-inspiring Vatican City , home to the majestic St. Peter’s Basilica and the renowned Sistine Chapel , where you can marvel at Michelangelo’s breathtaking masterpieces. Indulge in a leisurely Italian lunch in the charming neighbourhood of Trastevere where you’ll find the best carbonara at Trattoria Da Enzo al 29 . End your day at the world-famous Trevi Fountain , making a wish as Lizzie Macguire did and tossing a coin into its waters. Grab a gelato from the nearby Gelateria Della Palma before heading back to the port.

Elizabeth Rhodes/Travel + Leisure

For the first time, we’re spotlighting new cruise ships on Travel + Leisure ’s It List, as these exceptional vessels become more and more like floating resorts — celebrity chefs, crystal chandeliers, and Rolex boutiques included.

Explora Journeys’ Explora I

Paul Brady/Travel + Leisure

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. From $2,050 per person for a six-day sailing. Accessible ship. — Paul Brady

Oceania Cruises’ Vista

Nick Tortajada/Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. From $2,499 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Courtesy of Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. From $4,669 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Elizabeth Rhodes

Silversea’s Silver Nova

Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. From $3,250 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — David Swanson

It List 2024

Best Mediterranean cruise shore excursions

Fran Golden

Shore excursions in the Mediterranean highlight must-see experiences such as fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Some of the wonders you travel to see – the ruins of Pompeii, the Roman Colosseum and Michelangelo's David in Florence – are nowhere near the pier where your cruise ship will dock. The easiest way to get to them is with tours sold by your cruise line, which typically include the services of tour guides who are experts about the destination.

While some Mediterranean cruise passengers choose to do an excursion in each port and see every major attraction, it's also fun to plan some time exploring on your own . If you go the independent route, do some research and pick a port where your preferences – beachfront, cafes, boutiques or other attractions – are close to the pier.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

While excursion offerings vary by cruise line, here are our picks for the best shore excursions in the Mediterranean.

Full-day tour of Athens, from Piraeus, Greece

The port of Piraeus, Greece, is about seven miles from Athens, and while you can use taxis or public transport to get into the city, you are better off booking a tour with a licensed guide who will get you to the key sights and provide details about the city — a birthplace of democracy and Western thought. Athens is a fascinating city with both ancient and modern attractions. While half-day tours will get you to the famous Acropolis, we recommend a full-day experience so you can see and experience more.

Europe's oldest capital has its origins in 3,000 B.C. Grab a window seat on the bus so you'll see the hilltop Acropolis dominating the skyline, as it has for thousands of years. On the tour, you will spend time exploring its sacred buildings including the Parthenon, the beautiful, columned temple dedicated to the goddess Athena.

Related: Best Mediterranean cruise tips to enhance your European vacation

Your tour will also show off other sites throughout the city, including the ruins of the Temple of Zeus and Hadrian's Arch, Greece's impressive Parliament building and the Olympic Stadium. You'll have opportunity to dine on Greek cuisine (lunch is included in full-day tours) and shop for souvenirs on the narrow ancient streets of the lively Platka neighborhood.

Pick a tour that affords time at the Acropolis Museum, a modern museum full of ancient treasures such as statues that date back to the 5 th century B.C.

Best of Olympia tour, from Katakolon, Greece

best norwegian mediterranean cruise

Katakolon, Greece, is a small town with a nice strip of beach – and a landmark attraction about an hour away. Cruise passengers make the trip to ancient Olympia to see the site where the Olympic Games debuted in 776 B.C. A tour of the ruins of the religious center and sports complex includes the Temple of Zeus, Roman baths, gymnasium and swimming pool, as well as the first Olympic stadium. Three thousand years ago, the games took place every four years, after the summer harvest, with competitors coming from as far away as Italy and Asia Minor.

The short foot races were the most prestigious of the events, and you can imagine the roar of the crowd as you stand in the field where the races took place. Your tour will likely include a stop at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia to see some amazing artifacts, including bronze and stone statues of well-toned athletes.

Palace of Knossos tour, Crete

Wherever you dock in Crete, in the Greek islands, you'll want to visit the ancient Minoan palace of Knossos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates to the Bronze Age.

First settled around 7000 B.C., the religious and administrative center was the domain of King Minos and home of Zeus and Europa, according to Greek mythology. Tour the ruins, some partially rebuilt, to learn about the labyrinth built to contain the Minotaur (half man and half bull) and how a queen had running water in her bathroom more than 3,000 years ago.

Your tour may also include a stop at the Archeological Museum of Heraklion, which houses Minoan artifacts removed from the palace site.

Game of Thrones tour, Dubrovnik, Croatia

best norwegian mediterranean cruise

You can take a shuttle from the pier and tour Old Town Dubrovnik on your own, but if you are a fan of "Game of Thrones," the must-do is a guided tour that highlights sights that appeared on the HBO TV show. As fans know, Dubrovnik doubled for King's Landing, the fictional capital of the Seven Kingdoms.

Stops on the tour include the formidable 11 th -century Lovrijenac Fortress, high on a rock overlooking the sea, just outside the medieval walls that surround the Old Town. In novelist George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" books, which inspired GOT, the views from the fort are of Blackwater Bay.

Related: Movies and TV shows you can stream to get your cruising fix

In Old Town, you'll climb to and walk along the defensive walls that appeared on the show in the Battle of Blackwater Bay, as well as in other scenes. Other GOT sights in Old Town include the Jesuit Staircase, where Cersei began her Walk of Shame (season 5) and an area near St. Dominic Street, where market scenes for the show were filmed. Elsewhere, the outside of the Ethnographic Museum Rupe may look familiar. It appeared on the show as Littlefinger's brothel.

Rome city tour, from Civitavecchia, Italy

The port closest to Rome is Civitavecchia, Italy. Getting into the city can take 1.5 hours (or less or more, depending on traffic). It's a good idea to book a full-day excursion to make the most of your time in the city – especially if you are determined to see St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel, along with the Roman Colosseum, Roman Forum, Circus Maximus, the Forum, the Pantheon and other sights. Tours may also stop at Trevi Fountain, where tossing a coin is said to ensure your return to Rome.

Some tours combine one marquee sight and free time. If you are going this route, we recommend you go with the Colosseum, an amphitheater that once held as many as 50,000 spectators and where you can well imagine life in ancient Rome in all its (gory) glory.

Make sure to also climb Palatine Hill for views of the city, which has something fascinating — a flowing fountain, a gelato stand, a designer handbag shop — practically around every corner.

Florence city tour, from Livorno, Italy

If you want to explore Florence, look for cruises calling in Livorno, Italy, or another port in Tuscany. From there, you'll take a bus ride into the city, known for its Renaissance treasures. The city itself is a visual treat; a shore excursion will assure that you see such key sights as Michelangelo's David, in all his polished marble naked glory (at the tickets-required Accademia Gallery).

Art lovers will want to choose a tour that includes the Uffizi Gallery, with its works by Botticelli, Donatello, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci and other Renaissance artists. Your tour will also showcase the 15 th -century Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (a.k.a. the Duomo) and other architecture treasures in the city. Some tours also visit the university town of Pisa, famous for its Leaning Tower.

Ancient Pompeii, Capri and Sorrento tour, from Naples, Italy

It's not difficult to imagine life in ancient times while exploring the remarkable ruins of Pompeii, the ancient Roman city buried by ash from Mount Vesuvius in the year 79. The ruins — the forum, baths, temples and decorated villas — appear frozen in time.

While you can focus all your attention on Pompeii, we recommend a full-day tour from Naples that also showcases the breathtaking Amalfi Coast and the beautiful island of Capri — a typical combination would be Capri, the resort town of Sorrento and Pompeii.

You'll take a jetfoil to Capri and a funicular ride up to Capri Town, a shopping haven (with residential side streets well worth exploring). Back on the mainland, drive to Sorrento, with time to people-watch at an outdoor cafe. On the way back to Naples, stop by Pompeii for a guided tour of the ruins.

Gaudi and the Sagrada Familia tour, Barcelona

best norwegian mediterranean cruise

In Barcelona, you dock right in the city. Las Ramblas, the city's famous boulevard, is a long walk or quick shuttle bus ride away. For us, the must-do shore excursion is to see the extravagant creations of architect Antoni Gaudi, including his La Sagrada Familia Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where construction has been ongoing since 1882. The cathedral is the most visited attraction in Spain.

Choose a tour that also takes you to the hillside, UNESCO-recognized Parc Guell, where Gaudi sought to combine nature with modernist architecture. You'll also see two Gaudi residential buildings on the Paseo de Gracia — the La Pedrera apartment building and Casa Batllo, a private home with an especially eerie-looking façade.

Some tours also stop at Museu Picasso, which features early works by Pablo Picasso, in the city's Gothic Quarter (Barri Gotic).

Ancient Ephesus tour, from Kusadasi, Turkey

A favorite of those who love to explore ancient history, Ephesus is one of the most fascinating and best-preserved ancient cities in the world (and only a short drive from the Turkish resort town of Kusadasi).

In Ephesus, you walk the same marble streets as the ancients to sites that include a bath house, massive amphitheater and the jaw-dropping remains of a two-story library building façade, looking at columns, mosaics and monuments along the way. Greeks, Egyptians and Romans all ruled in Ephesus, but most of what you see today was built by the Romans. Outside the library, carved in stone, is early marketing asking whether you prefer to visit the library or a house of pleasure (an age-old question).

A tour of the ancient city can be combined in longer excursions with a visit to the House of the Virgin Mary, a modest chapel built on the spot where the Virgin Mary is believed to have spent her last days — a sanctioned pilgrimage site. There's also a second pilgrimage site in the area, St. John's Basilica, where St. John wrote the fourth book of the New Testament.

One such trip is this 12-night itinerary from Celebrity Cruises, which includes a visit to both Visby and Tallinn. Other highlights include a visit to Stockholm and Copenhagen, including an overnight stop in the latter.

The old city walls of Visby on Gotland island, a popular cruise port.

Norwegian Fjords : By far the most variety can be found in the Norwegian fjords region , with almost all major cruise lines operating at least some itineraries here. Although port calls in Flåm and Geiranger will soon be severely limited, many alternative ports will still be able to welcome some of the world’s largest cruise ships.

Whether you prefer the action-packed ships of Royal Caribbean or MSC, or the smaller ships that can sail along narrower fjords, there will be a Norwegian fjords itinerary for you.

Following the recent rise in popularity of the region as a cruising destination, the fjords season has extended, with trips available as early as April and as late as September.

British line P&O Cruises operates its relatively new megaship Iona in the fjords region for much of that period, with regular departures from Southampton on a popular 7-day itinerary.

Midnight Sun : Although all summer cruises in the region will experience long summer days, specific midnight sun itineraries set sail for the far north of Norway to let guests experience the thrill of being outside with the sun in the sky at midnight. Many of these trips visit Honningsvåg, which allows guests to travel by bus to the North Cape.

Northern Lights : In recent years, Scandinavia—or more specifically Norway—has become a year-round cruising destination thanks to the growth in popularity of northern lights cruises .

These itineraries can be found heading north of the Arctic Circle between October and early April.

Planning Tips For Scandinavian Cruises

Cruising in Northern Europe offers a fantastic variety of excursions and experiences, from historical city tours to adrenaline-filled outdoor adventures.

The region’s love of the outdoors lifestyle means active experiences are easy to find, both through cruise line excursions and independent operators.

The high levels of English comprehension across the region means booking your own activities and exploring ports independently is much easier than in many other parts of the world. Even so, look for independent tours that take place earlier in the day to reduce any time-related risk.

No matter when you visit Scandinavia, pack for all weathers. The height of summer can be marred by heavy rainfall, while it’s possible to get sunburnt in the snow-covered conditions of February and March.

Pack a versatile wardrobe. Layered clothing accommodates the region's variable weather, while specialized gear might be necessary for specific excursions.

Cruising And Sustainability

Prospective travelers should be aware of environmental concerns associated with cruising in this pristine region. The industry is moving towards sustainability, with initiatives to introduce zero-emission vessels in sensitive areas, particularly the UNESCO-listed Norwegian fjords .

Some local initiatives protesting against cruise travel have also gathered momentum, so cruisers should be aware of these issues before setting foot ashore.

Whether you're embarking on your first cruise alone or you've been on solo cruises before, single travelers will find more options than ever when it comes to cruising solo. Many cruise lines offer single staterooms with the same amenities as other cabins, at a price similar to what you'd pay with double occupancy fares. If you're ready for a maritime adventure, an extended vacation or simply a quick getaway from home, these top cruise lines offer some of the best options for solo travelers on waterways around the world.

Launched in 2010, Norwegian Epic was the first cruise ship in the industry to feature studio accommodations for solo travelers. Norwegian Cruise Line offers this category on nine of the 19 ships in its fleet, including the newest ship, Norwegian Viva. These cabins, at an average size of 100 square feet, are designed and priced with the solo traveler in mind. They have no single supplements – and studio rooms on board Norwegian Bliss even boast virtual windows.

Guests of the studios get access to the private Studio Lounge. In this exclusive space, you can socialize with other solo travelers and enjoy complimentary refreshments. There are also singles meetups throughout the voyage and plenty of fun-filled onboard activities to mingle with like-minded cruisers. Solo travelers can check out all the fun for singles on Norwegian Viva this winter on a cruise to the Caribbean , or in spring 2024 as the ship sets sail for the Mediterranean .

MSC Cruises offers interior and balcony solo cabins for single cruisers on its Meraviglia-class ships: the MSC Meraviglia, Bellissima, Grandiosa, Virtuosa and the newest vessel in the fleet, MSC Euribia. The second-newest ship, MSC World Europa, has 28 cabins – 10 Studio Interior and 18 Studio Ocean View staterooms – designed specifically for solo travelers. MSC World America, set to debut in 2025, will also feature the solo studio staterooms.

During voyages with MSC Cruises , single cruisers are invited to a complimentary, hosted cocktail party to mix and mingle with other solo travelers. The daily program is also an excellent source to discover additional activities, entertainment and opportunities to meet other cruisers. You'll have onboard special events like the themed 70s-inspired Flower Party and the White Party, where the ship is decked out in festive white decor and guests don their best white attire. In addition, there are various sports tournaments, or you can show off your culinary expertise during a MasterChef competition.

MSC's Caribbean and Bahamas cruises departing from Miami and New York City feature an overnight visit to Ocean Cay, the line's private island and marine reserve. While there, singles can participate in fun-filled evening activities like a Champagne Sunset Cruise or a glow paddleboarding excursion in the lagoon, then attend the lively Luna Libre Party and the lighthouse show.

Three of Holland America Line's newest ships each offer 12 solo cabins to accommodate single travelers: the Pinnacle-class Nieuw Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Konigsdam. These ocean view staterooms range in size from 127 to 172 square feet and feature the same amenities as the double occupancy cabins but with a double bed. The cruise line's Single Staterooms are priced for one person. If a guest chooses to book a different stateroom, single supplements for double occupancy cabins are as much as 100% over the standard fare, depending on the voyage and the cabin category.

Long committed to solo travelers, the line offers many activities where guests can meet other singles such as wine tastings, cocktail mixers, exercise classes, daily quizzes, sports challenges and more. If you're a solo traveler and a member of AARP, Holland America is now the exclusive cruise benefit provider to AARP's members. Solo cruisers will have access to an AARP member-only onboard credit that ranges from $50 to $200, depending on the itinerary and stateroom category.

For itineraries, Holland America's Alaska cruises and cruisetours are perfect for solo travelers, offering many opportunities to connect with fellow cruisers. Another favorite for singles is the line's fall voyages sailing from Boston to Québec City or Montreal.

These solo accommodations include interior rooms, virtual balcony staterooms and a super studio ocean view stateroom with a balcony. Once on board the ship, solo cruisers will have countless options to engage and socialize with other travelers. When it comes to dining with Royal Caribbean , make a reservation at the Japanese restaurant Teppanyaki for an entertaining meal with new friends, or join fellow foodies for the intimate Chef's Table experience (the dining venues vary by ship). Singles can also participate in onboard activities like trivia contests, drink seminars, escape rooms, dance classes and pool parties.

If you need more thrills to stay busy and to meet people, Royal Caribbean's ships feature world-class shows and entertainment alongside adrenaline-pumping rides and attractions. If you're sailing in the Caribbean, there are plenty of opportunities to meet and chat with other passengers at the line's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

The line's three intimate yacht-style cruise ships – World Navigator, World Traveller and the new World Voyager, whose inaugural season begins in Antarctica in November 2023 – are all-inclusive . Meals at all the dining venues, premium beverages and wines, gratuities, culturally immersive excursions, and more are included in the fare. With fewer than 200 guests on board, there's an atmosphere of conviviality on these ships – especially when exploring remote destinations with like-minded and adventurous travelers during expeditions in Antarctica and the Arctic.
