great support driver and guide, excellent stops, especially edinbriugh... BUT... too much time on the bus. This needs to be better balanced.. either shorter distance or more timer
Britain and Ireland Delight (Summer, 8 Days)
We had a very lovely experience.
Britain and Ireland Experience (12 Days)
This is the first time weâve used TRAFALGAR and we were very happy with the overall experience and have already recommended them to family and friends. Our Tour Guide (Sarah Rose Jefferson) was super friendly and a huge highlight of our trip & our Driver (Jamie Wassell) was fabulous! His driving skills were incredible and he was also very informative and had a good knowledge of the area. Wifi couldâve been better on the coach (some days it didnât work by mid morning/lunchtime). Perhaps having individual usage would stop others from draining all of the data? Also, a couple of the hotels we stayed in also lacked wifi in the actual rooms, which was a bit frustrating. The âoptionalsâ were great. Wouldâve liked to have spent more time at Blarney Castle (due to the massive crowds) and at Galway and maybe less or more time at Pembroke (as there wasnât quite enough time to do the castle tour whilst there) so that time seemed a bit wasted. A more in depth description of the Warwick Castle should be explained to future travelers, as we nearly didnât do this optional, and weâre so glad we did. The falconry show was so entertaining and the displays inside the lower rooms inside the castle were spectacular. Itâs one of the few castles where you can explore the entire castle too. Of course, with all travel, thereâs always hiccups with bags going missing or mix ups with number of beds in rooms or no air conditioning available. However... Sarah & Jamie made sure EVERY single person on our tour were looked after and taken care of before their own needs. Some days they didnât get to bed until early hours in the morning. Their dedication and comittment to making sure our trip was an amazing experience is a credit to both of them. Thank you TRAFALGAR for employing such great staff.
Best of UK & Ireland
Excellent trip. No issues with driver or guide. Couldnât have asked for better. But it was a very long and hectic schedule. Because of that we probably wonât be going on any long bus trips again.

The Best of Britain & Ireland
Highlights... definitely Edinburgh military tattoo, Irish night, medival banquet, blarney Castle.. Lowlights... worst hotels in Wetherby. In some locations. No aircon.. everyone fell sick during the trip. Welsh night seemed like we sat inside a brick kiln. Poorly managed

Very nice itinerary ... jam packed days and evenings. I chose not to do any of the extra evening excursions that were offered so I was able to use the time to explore every overnight stop on my own. The tour guide was amazing... so full of knowledge about all the countries/areas we visited.
I really enjoyed the trip

Edinburgh Scotlandâs capital is often a good place to start a tour of Scotland, but you will also be told Glasgow is good place to start a small group tour in Scotland. Such is the Scottish history of rivalry between these two cities. Odyssey has a tour from Edinburgh or Glasgow. Before the Vikings, Scotland was settled by the Picts, who were said to have migrated from Scythia (Scandinavia) before forming powerful kingdoms in what is now northern Scotland and from there these clans headed south. Malcolm II, who was king from 1005 to 1034, became the first king to reign over land roughly corresponding to much of modern Scotland. Our article on Scottish History provides great background reading on the formation of Scotland and Scotlandâs capital, Edinburgh . Learn more about Scottish culture including their sense of humour and a fascinating history on your tour of Scotland, a vacation mixed with education with amazing landscapes and beautiful scenery serving as your backdrop. The winding cobblestone roads in Glasgow and Edinburgh starkly contrast with the Scottish highlands that often include Ben nevis and the Scottish isle of the outer Hebrides or isle of Skye but their beauty blends just as well as their world-famous Scottish whisky on many Scottish tours. Anything Scottish is unique in Great Britain, just look at Harris Tweed .

Touring Scotland
The need to know
Getting around
Odyssey usually travels by coach and occasionally uses local transport, including trains and ferries. Specifics are always outlined in your tour itinerary. Scotland has a centralised and impressively extensive rail network run by Transport Scotland, which links towns to the major cities. It is also covered by a bus network that is said to place 95% of the popuation within 5 minutes walk of a bus stop, catering to local, national, and international services.
Accommodation
In major cities, Odyssey stays in centrally located 3-4 star hotels, with easy access to public transport. In smaller towns or rural areas, we usually stay in family-run hotels or guesthouses. On our long stay tours, during which you spend the length of the tour in a single location, we use serviced apartments.
Tour Guides
Odyssey always engages local guides with regional knowledge to ensure an authentic experience during which you can learn as much as possible about the history and culture of places you visit.
Geography, environment & weather
Scotland forms part of the United Kingdom, and the northern third of the island of Great Britain as well as 790 additional surrounding islands. These are encompassed by the Shetland Islands, Orkney Islands, and the Inner and Outer Hebrides. In terms of topography, itâs mountainous and rugged, although most of the population is to be found in the Lowlands in the south and east.
Scotlandâs climate is above all distinguished by its changeability and variation. Sometimes, a short drive will take you to completely different conditions, so the key to preparation is layering! During Spring, Summer, and Autumn, max temperatures tend to range between 7 and 17 degrees celcius, and during winter, the average maximum temperature is 5 degrees. In Spring and Autumn, youâll find that the weater is usually pleasant but there will still be snow on the mountains. The country is also known for its rain. However, because of Scotlandâs topography, it rains far more in the west than it does in the east. Scotlandâs sunniest location is The Fife Coast, with an average of 1500 hours of sunshine per year.
World Heritage Sites
The United Kingdom boasts 31 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, many of which are located in Scotland. You can view the official list of the sites here https://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/gb. It is well worth visiting every site, if you are able. But hereâs a few highlights from the bunch:
New Lanark â a picturesque restored 18th century mill village that sits on the River Clyde. It includes recreated houses of those who worked at the cotton mill, and includes a shop selling locally made textiles!
The Forth Bridge â This is a distinct and gorgeous bridge that crosses the Firth of Forth. In 2016, it was voted Scotlandâs greatest manmade wonder, and is often seen as a symbol of the country.
The Old and New Towns of Edinburgh â This oneâs pretty self-explanatory, but remember, if youâre visiting Edinburgh, take your time to explore and wander through one of the best-preserved cities in the UK.
Festivals & events
The most famous and grandest Scottish festival is, of course, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. If youâre interested in the Fringe, check out Odysseyâs tour, which runs every year and includes a series of hand-picked events! Also worth putting on the calendar is the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Fesitval, which takes place around May each year, and includes over 500 whisky-centric events. These include distillery tours, tastings, and much more. If youâre into literature, the Edinburgh International Book Festival is among the worldâs finest writersâ festivals. Taking place in August, it usually hosts around 1,000 writers and thinkers from across the globe.

Eating & Drinking
Now is a better time than ever to explore Scotlandâs food and drink culture. This is because in early 2018, Scotland began to implement a national strategy to position itself as a global destination for cuisine.
Scotland is probably best known for its whisky, the export of which brings billions of dollars into the economy. In regions known for whisky such as Speyside and the Isle of Islay, many distilleries are open for tours and tastings. Youâll also find that the flavour of whisky differs significantly depending on its region of origin, so itâs worth exploring a range of distilleries!
But Scotland isnât simply a nation of whisky. Scottish lobsters are among the most sought after in the world, showing up on the menus of many Michelin-starred restaurants. Scotland is also known for its salmon, which is the nationâs biggest food export. It is generally of prestige quality, a product for which buyers will pay a premium.
Health & Safety
While much of Scotland is usually safe to travel around, itâs important to stay alert to anything unusual. Also, you will often see signs warning of pickpockets in areas popular with tourists, so itâs important to keep a close eye on your belongings at all times.
Electrical supply
Whenever you travel overseas, itâs always wise to take an appropriate travel adaptor. The electricity supply runs at 230V, 50Hz. British plugs have three flat, rectangular pins which form a triangle. These are shared by Ireland, Malta and some former British colonies, but Australia is not one of them.
The best of Scotland
Skara Brae, a village on Orkney first inhabited 5,000 years ago by Neolithic settlers. It is so well preserved that it has been referred to as the "Scottish Pompeii"
- Edinburgh Castle
It may be well worn but you can't go past Edinburgh Castle. This impressive structure is perched on Castle Rock, a location that archaeologists believe has been occupied since the 2nd century AD, and has endured 26 sieges!
The Royal Mile is a series of streets forming the main thoroughfare of Edinburgh's Old Town. Its combination of cultural history and stunning architecture make it one of the most beautiful locations in one of the world's most beautiful cities.

Lovely hotel and the location could not have been better. I'd stay there again.
Great hotel (perfect location), wonderful tour guide (Robert was excellent in every respect), the half-day walking tour was fun and informative, and the events selected exposed me to Fringe events I probably wouldn't have seen otherwise. Very well thought out and put together.
We found all the guides in each place excellent, some more than others, but always knowledgeable and obviously in love with their chosen careers. David our coach driver was excellent also, coping with some difficult situations with a cool head and providing us with a running commentary on a country he knows so well - especially Norfolk his home county!
Sally and Angus H. June 2017
Wife Brenda and I just completed Odyssey tour in UK entitled âCanals and Railwaysâ led by Mal Bock. Absolutely superb, and Malâs leadership faultless. Extremely good value considering only seven guests, superb local guides and drivers, a most comfortable coach with seating for 24. . Hotels chosen were excellent, most with real character, not places one would have chosen without local knowledge and recommendation, . My wife and I have visited the UK many times- I was born there, but we saw so many places which were new to us. Thank you Odyssey!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ian Sanderson
Excellent selection and diversity from different types of events. We saw wonderful things that would not have occurred to me on my own.
What time zone is Scotland in?
Scotland has a single time zone , Greenwich mean time. The nation observes daylight saving time from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October.
Is tipping customary?
If youâre on an Odyssey tour, we take care of tipping so you donât need to give it a second thought. However, in your free time, or if travelling independently, itâs essential that you make sure you tip an appropriate amount for services, as is the case throughout much of Europe. Itâs customary to tip 10-15% of the bill at restaurants, or 1 to 3 GBP at a more casual establishment. Itâs polite to round a bill up to the nearest whole figure or leave the change when buying drinks. Itâs also customary to tip 10% in taxis, and leave a note or two with hotel porters and concierges.

Check with your cell phone provider to see whether youâre able to make calls and use data while in Scotland. Many providers will offer a daily fee that allows you to make calls and check the internet while only being charged your regular rates. However, be certain to inform your provider that youâre heading overseas, because just like a bank they can turn off your service as a result of unusual activity.
Should I visit Loch Ness while I'm in Scotland?
This huge freshwater loch is probably one of the most famous bodies of water in the world, largely due to the myth of the monster that may dwell within its dark waters. Loch Ness is found within the Great Glen in the Scottish Highlands, around 20 minutesâ drive from Inverness, and 3,5 drive from Edinburgh. Weâd say that you need at least half a day to see the major highlights, but ideally you would allocate a whole day which will give you time to see most of the attractions as well as circumnavigate the whole loch.

Which experiences are best for tours in Shetland islands?
There are plenty of things to do in Shetland. The islands have some of the most incredible landscapes in the UK and a Viking heritage. Odysseys Scottish Islands and Shetland small group tour, we. will view the wild, untamed scenery of Shetland , where we may catch a glimpse of some of the islandsâ tiny ponies, colonies of sea birds, and other wildlife. We trace the ancient Celtic and Viking influences on the Shetland Island peoples and their language, as we visit some of the remote villages in our search for historical treasures. We will also visit the Shetland island museum in Lerwick , the harbour of Scalloway, the Sunburgh Head, and Jarlshof, where the museum explains the sprawling sea-front ruins spanning 3,000 years.
The Shetlands are just over 300 kilometres from the Norwegian coast and were under Norse rule until 1469. About 14 of the hundred or so islands in the Shetland Island group are occupied and these cliff-edged islands now form the northernmost part of Scotland. Shetlanders have a distinctive dialect derived from their long connection with Norway and nowhere on the islands is more than 8 kilometres from the sea, so that fishing and salmon farming still provide a major contribution to the economy. However, North Sea Oil has been the major source of recent revenue. Shetland too boasts some of Britainâs most stunning coastal scenery, awesome colonies of sea birds, abundant marine life, and a rich pre-history.
Which experiences are best for tours in Orkney islands?
On Odysseys small group tour to Scotland that includes the Orkneys , we will experience some of the most beautiful scenery in the British Isles. On the Orkney mainland we learn on our Orkney tour about some of the prehistoric, Celtic, and Viking influences on the island peoples, visit some of the picturesque small towns and villages, and catch a glimpse of some of the islandâs seals, otters, and colonies of sea birds while we search for historical treasures in its great collection of ancient sites. After lunch the Orkney tour visits the Standing Stones of Stenness, the Ring of Brodga, and the prehistoric village of Skara Brae . We will also learn about the wartime history of the island as we view the Churchill Barriers and Italian Chapel, the St Magnus Cathedral.
Both Orkney and Shetland have close links to the Nordic countries through language, lifestyle, and history, despite the fact that the Orkney Islands are within 10 kilometres of mainland Scotland. The Orkney isles differs from the Shetland Isle in that it has flat and undulating islands with rich soil, which makes the grass green and nurtures summer crops of grain. Shetlanders are fishermen with farms while Orcadians are farmers with boats. Orkney is, however, still known for its dramatic coastal scenery, abundant marine bird life, and islands which contain the densest concentration of prehistoric and ancient sites in Britain, testifying to their long history of settlement. Eighteen of the 67 Orkney Island are inhabited.
On the second day on Orkney small group tours , we will have a morning guided tour of Kirkwall, and a visit to Bishopâs and Earlyâs Palaces, before leaving you the afternoon to further explore Orkney Island.

- Learn at least the local greetings to break the ice, a bit of Gaelic perhaps.. Although many locals speak English, the more you know of the native language and itâs slang, the greater your experience of the country will be.
- Carry a business card in your wallet or purse from your local hotel, to assist you with the return journey if you do become lost.
- Always ensure that you are covered by travel insurance. If you need advice on this feel free to contact Odyssey and weâll be able to help.
- When travelling independently, make sure you check the opening hours of shops and museums so that you donât miss out! Museums and galleries are often closed on Mondays. Also be certain to check whether your trip coincides with any public holidays, so you can plan accordingly.
- Consider contacting your bank to inform them that you may be making purchases overseas. Otherwise, they may flag any activity on your account as suspicious. Also, check which ATMs and banks are compatible with your cards, to ensure you can withdraw cash with minimal fees.
- Before departing, make sure you have a number of euros in a range of denominations. You donât want to be carrying around enormous amounts of cash, but take enough to make it easy to pay in locations that might not accept credit card. It will also help you avoid card transaction fees, and it makes tipping a breeze.

What Are The Best Ireland Tours for Seniors?
Travel expert Danielle answers your questions about why Driftwood Tours are the best guided Ireland bus tours for seniors.
Ireland Tours for Seniors At A Glance
đ Small Group = Personal Service
đ Easy Pace â No Rushing Around!
đ° Quality Time At Each Location
đ° Superb Value
đ Authentic Irish Culture & Amazing Experiences
đ˛ Great Food & Music
đ Convenient Tour Pickup Point
Hello from Ireland, I'm Danielle đ
Every day, I'm asked to recommend the best Ireland vacation packages for seniors.
I always point people in the direction of Driftwood Journeys of Discovery .
The group size is small, the flexible itineraries are focused on culture and the reviews from recent guests are 5/5!
Now read on to learn why I reckon Driftwood Tours are the perfect choice for senior travellers...
Small Group = Personal Service đ
With Driftwood, you are never just a number.
There are NEVER more than 15 guests on any Driftwood tour of Ireland.
With this small group size, each and every one of our guests benefits from personalised service.
Our tour guide team go above and beyond to devote special attention to everyone on board, tailoring each day's activities to the group's taste.
I guarantee that your VagaGuide will be on first-name terms with you during your tour.
What's more, being in a small group allows you time to get to know your fellow travel buddies.
"Andrew, our guide, took such good care of everyone and was funny and kind and knowledgable ..." The group was perfect. I enjoyed that the group was small enough to get to know each other and to enjoy each other throughout the tour. Liz - TripAdvisor , September 2023
Unlike normal bus tours of Ireland, our slick and comfortable Mercedes tour vehicles are compact in size.
Not only does that allow your Driftwood group to explore off the beaten path, it means your VagaGuide can hear â and answer â all of your questions.
And, most importantly, you can hear your VagaGuide's stories, songs and jokes, even from the back seat!
Ireland Tours â But At Your Own Pace đ
There's no rush with Driftwood.
Driftwooders don't hike, they stroll!
In contrast to our active tour style , which features adventure activities, the amount of walking on a Driftwood itinerary each day is kept to a minimum.
Our VagaGuides are highly-trained to accommodate every guestâs fitness and mobility levels.
If you walk with a cane, or have a condition that makes exertion challenging, there's absolutely no need to worry. Youâre in good hands.
Quality Time To Explore đ°
Driftwood itineraries leave you plenty of time to stretch your legs.
Forget about hurrying from tourist spot to tourist spot.
By focusing on smaller towns and less-visited attractions, Driftwood gives you the best possible experience.
Stroll through quaint villages , stopping to shop for souvenirs and browse craft shops.
We'll bring you to the best of Ireland's spectacular natural scenery where you can breathe in the fresh air and really connect with Ireland.
"While it's a scheduled tour, they gave us the opportunity to make additional stops to see more sights if the time allowed. We never felt rushed or that we missed anything because of time ... It was so nice to have your time in Ireland planned out, and you can let someone else do all the driving. I could take a nap or talk with my fellow travelers! This tour allows you to see the beautiful countryside and historical sights and time for shopping." Caroline - TripAdvisor , September 2023
Relax into your seat for a once-in-a-lifetime journey of discovery to our favourite hidden gems around Ireland.
Superb Value Tours of Ireland đ°
Driftwood are not only the best tours of Ireland for seniors, but the best value as well.

Best time for travel exploring scotland & ireland.
While just about any month is great to visit Scotland and Ireland, there are a few prime times of the year for the Exploring Scotland & Ireland tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.
Spring: Springtime is a wonderful time to visit the region! The countryside comes alive with flowers and shades of green, and the days of sunlight are growing just a bit longer, giving you more time to explore.
Summer: August is the perfect time to visit Edinburgh, as the Military Tattoo and Edinburgh Festival both take place then. Itâs crowded, but the city is alive with many cultural events. And generally, itâs good weather (fingers crossed for not too much rain!).
Fall: Daylight hours grow shorter, and the weather is not quite as hospitable as summer, but the changing colors of the landscape are truly lovely. Fewer crowds make it easier to navigate sites and take your time to enjoy them.
