The 11 Best Canadian Train Trips

By Michael Kaminer and Matt Ortile

Rocky Mountaineer

Canada is second only to Russia when it comes to land mass, which means seeing the country's vast wilderness can be overwhelming. Luckily, Canadian train trips criss-cross most of it, and these rail journeys allow you to take in some of the world's most spectacular scenery, stress-free. Just imagine: the nation's vistas unfolding before you slowly (or swiftly, depending on your chariot) while you remain in the comfort of your seat. On top of that, some of the Canada's most remote—and beautiful—spots lack road access, so a train ride may also be the only way to visit. All the more reason to climb on board .

Read on to learn more about 11 of the most beautiful Canadian train trips you can take across the Great White North, as well as some recommendations for where to stay at the beginning or at the end of your railroad adventure. (And for more fabulous train rides, check out the results of Condé Nast Traveler 's Readers' Choice Awards 2023 to see which trains our readers voted the best in the world .)

Via Rail passenger train travelling through Rocky Mountains British Columbia Canada.

Via Rail’s Winnipeg to Churchill

This 1,054-mile trip north feels more interplanetary than provincial, whisking you from urban Winnipeg to the tundras of Churchill , known as the polar bear capital of the world. Accessible by plane or train only, it’s also prime turf for beluga whale-watching , and possibly the world’s best perch to view the northern lights. Landscapes en route are breathtaking, with stops including tiny river towns The Pas, Thompson, and Weir River. Splurge on Via’s Sleeper Plus class for access to a bed and shower.

Where to stay: In Winnipeg, check into the impressive and century-old Fort Garry Hotel , a prime example of twentieth-century châteauesque architecture, including prominent cornices and a steep sloping copper roof. In case you needed a bit more of that old-world feel to your trip.

View of cattle grazing in front of Rocky Mountains from Foothills near Cochrane Alberta Canada

Ontario Northland’s Polar Bear Express, Cochrane to Moosonee

Ontario is larger than France and Spain combined, but most visitors stick to its big southern cities. Embarking from tiny Cochrane—nearly 500 miles north of Toronto —the Polar Bear Express chugs five hours further north to Moosonee, so remote it lacks road access. The route mimics a path fur traders favored centuries ago, through a primeval landscape of thick forests and winding rivers. Note that reaching Cochrane involves a flight to northeastern Timmins and an overnight bus ride.

Where to stay: Break up your adventure with a night at Cedar Meadows Resort & Spa in Timmins, Ontario. The place is all about rural and cozy vibes, letting you bask in the natural beauty of nearby Gillies Lake Park and Hollinger Park.

Agawa Canyon Tour Train Ontario

Agawa Canyon Tour Train, Ontario

It’s only accessible by trail or rail, which makes Agawa Canyon Wilderness Park near Sault Sainte-Marie such a thrill to visit. Hop on and off this 90-minute ride as you pass four dramatic waterfalls and a trail system that overflows with pristine natural beauty. Bonus: Beavers, the most Canadian of critters, traipse through here frequently.

Where to stay: Since this tour train takes just an hour and a half, you'll need a place to rest your head in Sault Sainte-Marie before continuing your journey. Luckily, the Delta Hotels by Marriott Sault Ste. Marie Waterfront is near the station, and offers cool views of Saint Mary's River and the United States beyond.

Canadian Rockies

Royal Canadian Rockies Experience, Banff to Calgary, Alberta

Canada’s glitziest train ride is also one of its most cinematic, passing through splendid Banff and Lake Louise, along with jaw-dropping sights like Alberta’s Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, a World Heritage Site where Indigenous people hunted ruminants by enticing them to leap off a cliff. Still eager to see more? At the end of the line, you can book a helicopter trip over the Rockies for a bird's eye view.

Where to stay: In Banff, you shouldn't miss the Fairmont Banff Springs . This Scottish Baronial fortress grants you a million-dollar view of those majestic snow-dusted mountain tops, which makes the moniker “the Castle in the Rockies” all the more fitting.

Via Rail’s The Canadian, Toronto to Vancouver

A single train journey can’t capture Canada’s magnificence, but this four-night/three-day adventure from Toronto to Vancouver comes close. You’ll take in prairies, lakes, peaks, valleys, hamlets, waterfalls, and, if you’re lucky, cameos by local wildlife like deer, elk, and bears. If you can, book a seat in Prestige Class—think concierge, superb meals, private lounges—for one of the most comfortable train trips you’ll ever take.

Where to stay: Once you're in Vancouver, keep the plush and casually fabulous energy going with a night or two at the dreamy Shangri-La Vancouver , where those who appreciate the subtleties of luxury travel won't be disappointed.

White Pass and Yukon Route, Yukon

Even today, building a railway through the mountains, glaciers, and gorges of Gold Rush country remains an impressive feat, let alone in 1898, when this route was first built. Survey views of the Yukon, BC, and Alaska , as your train rises a gut-churning 3,000 feet in just 20 miles to the summit of White Pass. Touring such treacherous terrain will leave you appreciating how the railway helped knit a nascent Canada together.

Where to stay: There aren't many hotel options in Skagway, Alaska, where this train journey begins. That said, there are a handful of cruises that call at this Alaskan port town, including options aboard Celebrity Cruises , so you can make this a two-for-one adventure.

If theres one Canadian train ride that should make your bucket list its the journey on the Rocky Mountaineer from...

Rocky Mountaineer's First Passage to the West, Western Canada

If there’s one Canadian train ride that should make your bucket list, it’s the journey on the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Banff . The whole ride is scenic, offering glimpses into the Great White North’s wildlife as well as its important Indigenous history. Thoughtful guides and storytellers onboard talk you through the locales and vistas from the comfort of your plush leather seats underneath the train cars’ glass-domed roofs. Meals here are delicious too, no matter which class of service you’re in, whether it’s SilverLeaf or GoldLeaf (though the latter’s linen-covered tables are a classy touch).

Where to stay: The Rocky Mountaineer is often spoken about in the same breath as other famous luxury train rides across the world: the Orient Express , Seven Stars Kyushu , or the Royal Scotsman . But unlike those, this isn’t a sleeper train. It travels exclusively by daylight, making the most of the scenery. At night, guests check into a hotel along the route—so your comfort throughout the journey is assured.

Train de Charlevoix, Quebec

Inaugurated in 1889, when it connected Quebec City to remote Charlevoix, this train line cruises along a glorious section of St. Lawrence coastline. Much of the scenery en route seems unchanged a century and a half later, with the mighty river on one side and lush landscapes on the other. Stops include enchanting coastal villages like Baie-St-Paul; consider splitting the journey over two days to explore. The route runs June through October.

Where to stay: Before you climb onboard the train in Quebec City, prep for your journey in old Basse-Ville (meaning “lower city”) at the boutique hotel Monsieur Jean , which offers bright and breezy digs melded with friendly Quebecois hospitality.

Via Rail, Jasper, Alberta to Prince Rupert, BC

The windows-only Dome Car on this nature-filled route offers 360-degree views of the regal Canadian Rockies. During the seven-hour train ride, you’ll also get an ocean’s worth of lakes, including beautiful Yellowhead, Lucerne, and Moose. Have more time? The train heads to coastal Prince Rupert the next morning, where whale-watching and grizzly-bear-viewing are highlights. Bonus: At the Alberta-British Columbia border, the train crosses the Continental Divide.

Where to stay: Once you're on Kaien Island and the train pulls into the port city of Prince Rupert, head for the Crest Hotel , where you can wake up to beautiful waterfront views of—what else?—Prince Rupert Harbour.

Rocky Mountaineer's Journey Through the Clouds, British Columbia and Alberta

The Canadian Rockies’ tallest peak, majestic Mount Robson, is the star of this ten-day journey from Vancouver to Calgary. But it’s hard to pick a highlight when your trip spans sights like British Columbia’s astonishing Hell’s Gate—twice the width of Niagara Falls—and Moose Lake, home to plenty of its namesake. You’ll also get a glimpse of the gargantuan Albreda Glacier, a landscape dating back eons.

Where to stay: When in Canada, you can't go wrong with a Fairmont, and the Fairmont Palliser in Calgary is a true beaut. Plus, it's sandwiched between the city's downtown and the Calgary Design District, so you'll have plenty of sightseeing options when you get off the train.

Via Rail’s The Ocean, Montreal to Halifax

Climbing north into remotest Quebec and east into New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, this aptly-named, 836-mile trip lets the wide-open spaces and clear-blue waters unfold like aqua-tinted postcards. Bonus: The Ocean is the oldest continuously running named passenger train in North America, rolling along since 1904.

Where to stay: In Montreal you've got the pick of the litter, but the stately yet modern Hotel Birks Montreal and the classically luxurious Four Seasons Montreal take the cake. Meanwhile, in Halifax, you've got the super sleek Muir, Autograph Collection in the downtown waterfront area, and the richly cozy The Pebble Bed & Breakfast in the South End for an inn-in-the-city experience.

It all starts along the stunning shores of Lake Louise, where a three-night stay at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise indulges with the natural treasures of Banff National Park.

Into the rockies by rail aboard rocky mountaineer, travel the icefields parkway, one of the top drives in the world.

A destination within itself, the parkway is rated as one of the top drives in the world by <em>Condé Nast Traveler</em>; it winds along the Continental Divide through soaring rocky mountain peaks and is dotted with more than 100 ancient glaciers, cascading waterfalls, dramatic rock spires, emerald lakes and plenty of wildlife.

Your home for nights 1 – 3.

Private whale-watching cruise off Victoria, British Columbia

A whale of a cruise off vancouver island.

A whale-watcher's paradise, the waters off Victoria at the tip of Vancouver Island are home to a wealth of marine life. Along with seals, porpoises, sea lions and countless seabirds, there's a population of resident killer whales (orcas); humpbacks, the region's largest whale, singing loudly to announce their oversized presence; minke, the smallest of the locals here, also quite vocal; and migrating gray whales, often surfacing close enough for a friendly hello during your private whale-watching cruise by Eagle Wing Tours. Climb aboard their cozy, semi-covered catamaran 4 Ever Wild – offering multiple outdoor and inside viewing options, onboard restrooms, comfortable leather seating and more – for an enriching, inspiring and unforgettable nature-viewing experience.

Flightseeing over Vancouver & the Gulf Islands

A bird's-eye view of vancouver and the gulf islands by floatplane.

As far as geographical names go, British Columbia's scenic Gulf Islands can be a bit daunting. First of all, the more than 200 Gulf Islands are actually located not in a "gulf" but in the Strait of Georgia (which has nothing to do with the US state or the former Soviet republic), set between large Vancouver Island to the west, and the British Columbia mainland (where the city of Vancouver is situated) to the east. And to make things even more interesting, the islands include towns with names like Vesuvius and Ganges. But seeing these beautiful, pristine islands – home to many parks and protected areas – from the air is indeed a highlight of your flightseeing trip by floatplane from Vancouver's Coal Harbour that takes you aloft for a bird's-eye view of the city and environs.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey to enter Canada. Click here for more information on the U.S. Department of Customs and Border Patrol website.

If you are a U.S. citizen, you do not require a visa for the short duration of this tour. Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation. If you are a frequent traveler to Canada from the U.S., you may benefit from the NEXUS program which is a joint initiative between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency and the Canada Border Services Agency that allows pre-screened and approved travelers faster processing at designated highway lanes in high-volume border crossing locations, at a NEXUS kiosk at several airports, and at certain marine reporting locations in the Great Lakes and Seattle regions. For further information, you may log on to the Nexus Internet site by clicking here .

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact a consulate or embassy of Canada to determine what travel documentation is required.

Anyone with a criminal record (including some misdemeanors such as Driving While Impaired (DWI) charges) may be excluded or removed from Canada, and should contact a Canadian embassy or consulate well in advance of any planned travel to ensure proper travel documentation.

We strongly recommend that your passport be valid for six months beyond the completion of your tour. In addition, we recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm). Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey.

Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences. Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage – General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc. For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches or onboard Rocky Mountaineer or in any of the hotels.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally, no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Canada. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. The CDC operates a 24-hour travelers' information number at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally, please contact an embassy or consulate of Canada to determine what vaccinations may be required for you to visit.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.

Several modes of transportation are used on this tour – motor coach, ferry, float plane and train. In general, this itinerary is recommended for those who have little if any difficulty walking, climbing stairs, or balancing onboard a moving train. Walking is also affected by weather conditions which do vary greatly and can involve snow, ice, and mud.

Regarding Wheelchairs - If you require a wheelchair while traveling, you must meet the specifications of each of the tour's suppliers including the motor coach, ferry, float plane and train. You may bring a collapsible, lightweight wheelchair on tour that weighs less than 100 lbs (45.4 kg), but you must be able to maneuver on and off the coach with limited assistance. We strongly recommend that if you require a wheelchair for travel or have moderate to severe difficulty walking that you bring a companion to assist you. Before you book this tour, you will need to provide us with the exact specifications of the wheelchair, including: size, model, and all components that accompany it to determine its motor coach storage capabilities.

Rocky Mountaineer has a lift to move between the upper level, where the dome car is located and the lower level, where the dining room is located.

Regarding Oxygen - If you require portable oxygen while traveling, you will be responsible for any maintenance and operation that the tank requires while on tour, and for locating health facilities on the tour route that can perform tank maintenance. If you choose to bring a tank on tour, you will need to provide us the exact specifications of the tank, including size, model, and all components that accompany it prior to booking the tour to determine motor coach storage capabilities. You may inquire about having them filled at a hospital in Vancouver, Banff or Jasper (there is no hospital in Lake Louise), but tank maintenance facilities are limited in the Canadian Rockies.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The summer weather in the Canadian Rockies can change instantly and is often unpredictable as in any mountainous region. From June through early September, normal temperatures range from 50 to 80˚F (10 to 27˚C). However, the Canadian Rockies could experience some unusually warm weather (80 to 90˚F) (26 to 32˚C) during the summer months. Therefore, we suggest including some light warm weather clothing in your travel wardrobe. Conditions are often very local and can change radically from one valley to the next, or change during the course of the day. Due to its geographic location, Western Canada generally has long hours of daylight and in mid-summer the sun will rise as early as 5:00 a.m. and set as late as 10:00 p.m. In the early spring and fall, daylight hours average about 14 hours, from 6:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. Rainfall is greatest by the ocean in Vancouver and lighter in the interior portions of the Canadian Rockies.

What To Pack

When joining a Tauck journey, every guest is responsible for their own health and, in turn, the protection of their fellow travelers, the Tauck staff, our suppliers and the places we visit. As such, you are expected to follow local and supplier guidelines regarding face coverings, as explained by your Tauck Director. Our partners may have a limited supply of face coverings, gloves, and hand sanitizer, so please bring such personal items for your own comfort.

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. During the evenings some dining rooms require smart casual attire for dinner (no jeans) and some fine dining rooms recommend jackets for the gentlemen, but they are not required.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. Irons and ironing boards are available upon request. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are also available for a fee at all the Fairmont Hotels on this itinerary.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

We suggest that you pack the following items your journey:

  • A reusable water bottle
  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Hiking boots if you would like to hike on some of the more extensive trails
  • Travel alarm clock/ cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Today in the Icefields area, you have the choice between two activities. First you may choose to ride onto the surface of the Athabasca Glacier by Ice Explorer; a massive vehicle specially designed for glacial travel. An experienced driver-guide shares a wealth of fascinating information about glaciers, icefields and their impact on our environment. Your other option is to walk beyond nature's edge and enjoy the view from a fully-accessible, cliff-edge walkway that leads to a glass-floored observation platform 918 feet (280 metres) above the Sunwapta Valley.

Major city stops include Vancouver, Jasper, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec and Halifax. Depending on the train route, VIA Rail offers daylight or overnight sleeper train experiences. Its train cars feature large picture windows, so you can take in the vast Canadian landscape. Some trains offer a Panorama car, where giant windows extend to the ceiling.

#2 Travel tip: Cover more Canada on the train

For first-time visitors to Canada who want to take in as much as possible, a trans-Canada train journey is an ideal trip. Add time in terminal cities, such as Vancouver, Toronto, and Halifax to explore.

1. Daylight Train

The Rocky Mountaineer runs from April to the end of September during daylight hours. It follows this schedule to make the most of the amazing views in the Canadian Rockies. Guests are transferred to hotels for overnight stops, and do not sleep on the train.

2. Passenger Train

VIA Rail is Canada’s main passenger train. It connects the country from Vancouver to Halifax with four major train routes. It offers different classes of train cars. Business class gets lounge access, food and beverage service included, priority boarding, extra luggage and wider, comfortable seating.

3. Sleeper Train

There are two train routes in Canada which allow you to sleep on the train. The first is between Vancouver and Toronto on The Canadian. You can break up this route with stop-overs in Jasper or Winnipeg. The second route with a sleeper train is the Ocean train from Montreal to Halifax. Both sleeper train routes are available all year long. Some sleeper trains in Canada are equipped with special panoramic viewing cars to provide you with the best view of the scenery day or night.

Vancouver to Toronto

VIA Rail’s The Canadian connects Toronto and Vancouver. It stops in Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Jasper. This route can also be travelled in reverse. This train covers a total of 2762 miles, which takes about 86 hours. Enjoy sweeping views in the Panorama car, where giant windows extend up to the ceiling. Travelling from Toronto to Vancouver, the Canadian carries you from the forests of Ontario, through the expanse of the Prairies, and past the dramatic snow-capped Rocky Mountains.

Montreal to Halifax

VIA Rail’s The Ocean train connects Montreal to Halifax. The 839-mile journey takes approximately 21 hours. It has been running since 1904 and is the oldest continuously operated named passenger train in North America. You'll first travel through the French-speaking province of Quebec. Then past a backdrop of lighthouses and seascapes in the Maritime Province of Nova Scotia. As you relax onboard, you'll see tiny communities along your route, representing French Canadian, Acadian, Celtic and English heritage.

Vancouver to the Rockies

Along with a segment of VIA Rail’s The Canadian route, The Rocky Mountaineer runs from Vancouver through the Rockies. There are three different routes to enjoy. The Rainforest to Gold Rush connects North Vancouver and Jasper, with stops in Whistler and Quesnel. The Journey through the Clouds also connects Vancouver to Jasper, but takes the Yellowhead pass, and stops in Kamloops. The First Passage to the West connects Vancouver to Banff, with a stop in Kamloops.

Canadian rockies and west coast.

Western Canada is known for its dramatic wild landscapes. This includes the mountains and glacier lakes of the Canadian Rockies. It also extends to the lush rainforests and Pacific Coastlines of British Columbia. It’s one of Canada’s most popular locations for a train vacation. Many remote areas are only accessible by rail. Spend an extra day or two exploring the city of Vancouver as well.

Across Canada

Make the journey across the country by rail. This coast-to-coast train trip connects Vancouver to Halifax, with stops in major cities, such as Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal. If you only have one trip to Canada, this lets you see it all. Highlights include the Atlantic and Pacific coastlines, the Canadian Rockies, and the Prairies.

Eastern Canada and Maritimes

Along with amazing scenery, there’s lots of history and culture to explore in Eastern Canada. Visit the cities of Toronto and Montreal. Add a tour to famous places, like Niagara Falls, and the not-so-famous hidden gems, like the charming fishing towns of the Maritimes. There’s a lot to discover in eastern Canada.

North and Arctic

Taking the train to Churchill is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This community sits on the edge of Hudson Bay. It takes two days and two nights of travelling north on the rails to get there. There are no roads into this subarctic region.

Planning Your Canadian Rockies Train Trip

Some people think about a train trip to the Canadian Rockies for years before they do it. Others decide on the spur of the moment to take the train and make plans on their way to the airport (well, almost).

While both methods work, some advance planning increases your odds of getting what you want and having a stress free, rewarding experience. Here are some decisions you’ll consider as you plan your trip.

1. Which month do you want to travel?

best train trip in canadian rockies

Banff is situated at an altitude of 1384 m (4541 feet) and Lake Louise is situated at an altitude of 1661 m (5449 feet). Lake Louise thaws, on average, about June 15. Jasper is situated at an altitude of 1062 m (3484 feet). Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper, on the other hand, are less rainy in May than they are in June, July and August.

Traveling in the first week of October is generally less expensive than traveling during the summer and the temperatures tend to be warmer in October than they are in May. Generally speaking, you are more likely to encounter snow in May than in early October.

The busiest time in the Canadian Rockies is July and August, not surprisingly. June is quieter than July and August since most Canadian children get out of school about July 1.

2. How Long a trip do you want?

best train trip in canadian rockies

To determine the optimal length for you, decide what you want to see and do. Will you spend time exploring Vancouver before or after your train trip to the Rockies? (Personally, we think Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and that, especially if you’ve never been here before, it’s definitely worth a day or two or three in its own right.)

Do you want to focus on the train experience, the Canadian Rockies experience, or both? How many nights do you want to spend in the Rockies? How many days do you want to spend on the train?

Do you want a one way trip that begins in Vancouver and ends in Calgary or the reverse? Or do you prefer a round trip package that begins and ends in Vancouver?

3.Which type of service do you want on the Rocky Mountaineer?

GoldLeaf Seating

SilverLeaf Service includes reserved seating in a custom built single level car expansive windows curving into the ceiling, hot breakfast and lunch served at your seat, and complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages during the day and overnight accommodations in Kamloops.

GoldLeaf Service includes reserved seating in the elevated GoldLeaf dome car, breakfast and lunch in the GoldLeaf dining car and access to the GoldLeaf outdoor viewing platform. Complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are included on the train and overnight accommodations are included in Kamloops.

4. What kind of hotels do you want?

Some people think of hotels as places to sleep and others think of them as oases of pampering, luxury and beauty. Your take on hotels will determine the hotels you include with your train trip. All of the hotels included with your Rocky Mountaineer train packages are nice but some, particularly the Fairmont hotels, are elegant, beautiful and luxurious with spas, great restaurants and amenities.

You can include Fairmont hotels with any train package and you can also choose comfortable, moderate hotels with any package. You can also mix and match. You can also add hotel breakfasts, dinner or breakfast and dinners to any train package.

5. How many will be in your party?

While many couples and singles enjoy train trips to the Canadian Rockies and have the time of their lives, these trips are perfect for groups. You’ll have an opportunity to spend quality time in spectacular environments with the people who matter most to you. And these trips are so spectacular that it’s thrilling to share them.

Best Canadian Rockies Train Trips

If you enjoy rail travel, there are two Canadian Rockies train trips. VIA Rail is a government-run service across Canada that crosses the Canadian Rockies through Jasper. The Rocky Mountaineer is a private company that operates a luxury train along two lines—Vancouver to Banff and Vancouver to Jasper.

The original transcontinental line passed through Banff, crossing the Continental Divide at Kicking Horse Pass and continuing to Vancouver via Rogers Pass. But this form of transportation, which opened up the Canadian Rockies to tourists, began to fade with the advent of efficient air services, and the last scheduled services on this line ended in 1991.

Government-run VIA Rail provides coast-to-coast rail service using a northerly route that passes through Jasper National Park. At Jasper, the westbound transcontinental line divides, with one set of tracks continuing west to Prince Rupert via Prince George and the other heading southwest to Vancouver.

The Canadian is a service between Toronto and Vancouver via Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper, and Kamloops. Service is provided in two classes of travel: Economy features lots of leg room, reading lights, pillows and blankets, and a Skyline Car complete with food and bar service, while Sleeper Plus and Prestige Sleeper are more luxurious, featuring sleeping rooms, daytime seating, all meals, a lounge and dining car, and shower kits for all passengers. At Jasper, the westbound transcontinental line divides, with one set of tracks continuing slightly north to Prince Rupert. Along this route, the train makes three trips per week. It is a daytime-only service, with passengers transferred to Prince George accommodations for an overnight stay. It offers Economy and Touring Classes.

Rocky Mountaineer runs a luxurious rail trip between Vancouver and Banff or Jasper, through the spectacular interior mountain ranges of British Columbia. Travel is during daylight hours only so you don’t miss anything. Trains depart in either direction in the morning (every second or third day), overnighting at Kamloops. Trains terminate in Vancouver off Terminal Avenue at 1755 Cottrell Street (behind Pacific Central Station).

This Glass-domed Train Through the Canadian Rockies Is One of the Most Scenic Rides in the World (Video)

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

best train trip in canadian rockies

There's something romantic about traveling by train. You travel quickly, but not too quickly to miss out on the views. And for visitors to Western Canada — home to iconic sites like Banff National Park — views are important. For travelers who don't want to miss a thing, there's nothing better than a trip on Rocky Mountaineer's GoldLeaf Service train carriages.

The GoldLeaf rail cars have full-dome windows so guests can see above them, a feature that's particularly handy when traveling through Western Canada's stunning mountain ranges. The cars also have a large outdoor viewing platform so travelers can enjoy fresh mountain air and get unobstructed photos. Guests who book GoldLeaf Service will enjoy hot, chef-prepared breakfast and lunch, and afternoon wine and cheese service.

Rocky Mountaineer, a Canadian rail-tour company that's the proud owner of GoldLeaf Service, has added four new train carriages to its fleet with another three set to be added in 2020. The first four will be added to two popular routes: the two-day journey between Vancouver and Lake Louise or Banff and the two-day trip between Vancouver and Jasper.

The luxury rail cars were engineered and built by Swiss rail car company Stadler, and marks the largest capital investment in Rocky Mountaineer's history. Each GoldLeaf rail car accommodates 72 guests in reclining, heated seats.

Steve Sammut, president and chief executive officer of Rocky Mountaineer, said in a statement , "We were intentional in designing these new cars to offer the same exemplary guest comfort across the entire fleet, while also making numerous engineering enhancements behind the scenes that reflect our goal of constantly enhancing both the experience and efficiency of our service."

Plan An Affordable Trip Itinerary On The Rocky Mountaineer

The Canadian Rocky Mountaineer is a luxury train offering awe-inspiring views, but for some VIA Rail is the option that meets the budget.

  • The Rocky Mountaineer is a luxury Canadian train for sightseeing, but can be expensive.
  • Passengers can save by checking for special promotions.
  • VIA Rail offers a much cheaper alternative with fares starting from CAD 82, but lacks luxury amenities.

The Rocky Mountaineer is a Canadian icon . It is a Canadian rail-tour company operating out of Vancouver offering luxury scenic trains in British Columbia and Alberta as well as a route in Colorado and Utah. The Mountaineer is considerd the most luxurious train in the USA and the price tends to reflect that.

Passengers on the Canadian Rocky Mountaineer travel in luxury and style in glass-domed trains . But these are outside of the budget of most folks. Fortunately, there are ways to save money on the Rocky Mountaineer and get the complete experience.

Canada's Rocky Mountaineer & What It Offers

The rocky mountaineer is a luxury canadian tourist train with packages and trains designed for sightseeing.

The Rocky Mountaineer operates two types of wagons designed for comfort and for sightseeing called the SilverLeaf and the GoldLeaf. The Goldleaf wagons are double-deck panorama wagons with bi-level dome coaches and wrap-over windows on the top level.

The SilverLeaf wagons are single-deck dome coaches (rebuilt from RedLeaf coaches). The Rocky Mountaineer does not have sleeper accommodation; trains travel by daylight and accommodation is in hotels.

Rocky Mountaineer Canadian Routes:

  • First Passage To The West: Vancouver to Banff (overnight stop in Kamloops and intermediate stop in Lake Louise)
  • Rainforest To Gold Rush: North Vancouver to Jasper (overnight stops in Whistler and Quesnel)
  • Journey Through The Clouds: Vancouver to Jasper (overnight stop in Kamloops)

All of these journeys are expensive, but there are ways to save money. For example, passengers can save up to CAD 1,400 (or USD 1,040) per couple by getting deals on the Rock Mountaineer promotions page .

The Oldest Scenic Amtrak Route In America Is Still In Operation Today

Example classic 2-day rocky mountaineer vancouver to jasper, rocky mountaineer packages start at usd 1720 - 2,782 per guest.

Rocky Mountaineer fares are bundled with accommodation, meals, and sometimes excursions. The Rocky Mountaineer offers a range of packages ranging from one-night to 10-night packages. The fairly typical 2-day rail Vancouver to Jasper package starts at USD 1720 - 2,782 per guest.

2-Day Rocky Mountaineer Vancouver to Jasper

  • Cost: From USD 1720 - 2,782 per guest
  • Destinations: Vancouver, Kamloops, Jasper
  • Duration: 2 Days / 1 Night
  • Meals Included: 2 Breakfasts, 2 Lunches
  • Accommodation: One hotel in Kamloops

This train travels only in the daylight so that passengers can enjoy the stunning views of the Canadian West and Canadian Rockies.

On the first day, the train departs Vancouver in the morning winding its way through the dazzling beauty of the British Columbia interior to Kamloops. There, passengers disembark for the night, retiring to their hotel accommodation in Kamloops. The second day continues through the Canadian Rockies into the province of Alberta to Jasper.

10 Scenic Amtrak Trains, Ranked By Visitor Reviews

Take the long-distance train via rail, enjoy the same route as the rocky mountaineer for as little as usd 128 with via rail.

VIA Rail is Canada's national long-distance intercity passenger rail service (the Canadian counterpart to America's Amtrak). VIA Rail operates in eight Canadian provinces and operates the longest rail service in Canada (Vancouver to Toronto).

Unlike the rolling stock offered by the Rocky Mountaineer, VIA Rail is optimized for long-distance and economy.

VIA Rail operates trains from Vancouver to Jasper via Kamloops and from Prince Rupert on the British Columbia coast near Alaska through Prince George in the middle of British Columbia to Jasper. It is better to take the VIA Rail westbound from Jasper to Kamloops as the train runs in the daylight, departing Jasper at 9:30 am and arriving at Kamloops at 6:30 pm.

It is much cheaper to take this passenger train than the touristic Rocky Mountaineer. VIA Rail offers fares from Vancouver to Kamloops starting from CAD 82 or around USD 61. Passengers can choose to disembark at Kamloops and Kayak.com lists plenty of accommodation options below USD 100 per night and starting from as low as USD 52.

Vancouver to Kamloops:

  • Duration: 9 Hours, 17 minutes
  • Cost: From CAD 82 (approx. USD 61) Economy Class
  • Schedule: Depart Vancouver at 3:00 pm; arrive in Kamloops at 0:17 am
  • Hotel: From USD 60 per night

Vancouver to Jasper (via Kamloops):

  • Duration: 19 Hours
  • Cost: Economy Class From CAD 172 (approx USD 128) / Sleeper Plus Class From CAD 558 (approx. USD 414)
  • Schedule: Depart Vancouver at 3:00 pm; arrive in Jasper at 11:00 am

While much cheaper, VIA Rail does not offer the same tourist benefits as the Rocky Mountaineer. The trains do not have domed windows and some of the trains run at night (when the Rockies will not be visible).

Across the southern border, the American counterpart train is the venerable Amtrak Empire Builder running from Chicago north across the United States to Seattle.

Amtrak’s City of New Orleans  is a popular choice for those wishing to explore the rich history and culture of Chicago, Memphis and New Orleans. Trains typically leave the Windy City at 8pm, trundling through Illinois and Kentucky by night and gliding into Tennessee as the sun rises. Be sure to stop off in Memphis to wander through the homeland of blues, rock n’ roll and soul music, as well as paying a visit to Elvis’ former home.

After leaving Memphis, the journey continues through Mississippi and Louisiana, where you can gaze out at cypress swamps teeming with alligators and birds. Finally, it arrives in NOLA at 3.47pm. Carriage options are the same as those offered on other Amtrak sleeper services, with coach class tickets starting from around $110 and roomettes starting from $421 for solo passengers or $596 for two.

The Canadian, Vancouver to Jasper, Canada

VIA Rail’s overnight service between Vancouver and Jasper certainly doesn't scrimp on impressive scenery. What’s more, it’s a fraction of the price of the famous Rocky Mountaineer service. The 19-hour trip starts at reasonable C$156 (US$122) per passenger for a reclining seat in Economy, or C$527 (US$413) for a two-person cabin in Sleeper Class.

<p>Trains depart Vancouver at 3pm each day, gliding away from the city’s gleaming skyscrapers and towards British Columbia’s breathtaking mountains and lakes. Stopping at Kamloops just after midnight, the journey continues along through eastern BC and into Alberta (be sure to wake up early to see the Rockies at sunrise). Trains depart Vancouver at 3pm each day, gliding away from the city’s gleaming skyscrapers and towards British Columbia’s breathtaking mountains and lakes. Stopping at Kamloops just after midnight, the journey continues along through eastern BC and into Alberta (be sure to wake up early to see the Rockies at sunrise). Finally, you’ll arrive in Jasper at 11am the following day. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and crystal-clear lakes, this laid-back town is the ideal base for exploring the Rockies and Jasper National Park.

The Ocean, Montréal to Halifax, Canada

Many visitors flock to western Canada for its big-name national parks and hulking mountains, but the east coast is stunning in an entirely different way. Seeing the delights of this charming region is easy on board VIA Rail’s The Ocean . Beginning at 7pm in Montréal, the journey whisks you alongside the Lac Saint-Pierre, before passing through New Brunswick by night and then onto the picturesque lakes of Nova Scotia. Finally, you’ll arrive in Halifax at 5.51pm the following day.

Seating and carriage options are the same as those offered on VIA Rail’s The Canadian, although there’s no Prestige Class option. Economy tickets start at around $107, while Sleeper Plus tickets start from $371 for a cabin for two. As for food, those in Sleeper class can enjoy a complimentary three-course meal accompanied by Canadian wines, or there’s a good selection of snacks and light meals available for Economy passengers.

Napa Valley Wine Train, Napa to St Helena, California

What could be better than drifting past emerald-green vineyards with a glass of wine in hand? Perhaps doing so on one of Napa Valley Wine Train's  unique vintage carriages, which travel on a 36-mile (58km) there-and-back trip from Downtown Napa to St Helena on an original 1864 rail line. The carriages, with their opulent velvet-upholstered seats, mahogany paneling and brass, have been sensitively restored to evoke the glamor of vintage train travel.

Sky Railway, Santa Fe, New Mexico

Skirting through some of New Mexico’s finest scenery, the tantalizingly named Sky Railway is just as fantasy-filled as you’d imagine. The journey is made all the more enticing by the fact this 141-year old heritage route was recently saved by a group of rail enthusiasts ( Game of Thrones author George RR Martin among them). Since its revival in late 2021, it’s been given a new lease of life as a family-friendly adventure trip.

There are several packages to choose from – all of which depart from and return to Santa Fe – offering a wide range of themes, from culinary experiences to an opportunity to a journey back in time to the days of the Wild West. Guests can even join a murder mystery game or board the StarGazer Express at night to take in the glorious celestial show the Galisteo Basin offers. Ticket prices start from around $59 for the 2.5-hour Santa Fe Scenic route.

Denali Star, Anchorage to Fairbanks, Alaska

Ditch the car and opt for a more climate-friendly journey through one of America’s most beautiful (and least-visited) national parks. The Alaska Railroad's flagship train  Denali Star embarks on a 12-hour ride between Anchorage and Fairbanks via Wasilla, Talkeetna and Denali. Along the 365-mile (587km) route, the train rushes past rivers and mountains and offers expansive panoramas of Hurricane Gulch from the top of a 296-foot (90.2m) bridge.

Check out Alaska's most incredible sights

Of course, you’ll want to leave longer than a day to take it all in. Passengers can usually combine their train journeys with day trips in Talkeetna, an excursion in Denali National Park or even plan a multi-day itinerary with overnight stays along the way. In addition to the standard stops, the train will provide a service between Talkeetna and Hurricane. Trains run between May and September each year and tickets start at $259 for the full distance.

Copper Canyon train, Los Mochis to Chihuahua City, Mexico

This nine-hour trip between Los Mochis, Sinaloa and Chihuahua City, Chihuahua, has rightly gained a reputation as one of the most epic rail journeys in the world. The famous Copper Canyon through which it travels is nothing short of magical: think dramatic gorges, towering peaks and historic colonial towns. It’s possible to travel in both directions, but we’d advise setting off from Los Mochis so you get to see the most stunning scenery (much of which is at the beginning of the route) before the sun sets.

There are two providers which offer trains through the Copper Canyon – the Chepe Regional and the Chepe Express – but the latter is significantly quicker and more luxurious. There are departures from Los Mochis on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with one-way tickets starting at $123.

Mount Washington Cog Railway, Mount Washington, New Hampshire

Dubbed “the first mountain-climbing cog railway in the world”, this one-of-a-kind route traverses the steep summit of Mount Washington, reaching a 37% gradient at certain points. Located in the gorgeous Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, in the heart of the White Mountains, the National Historic Engineering Landmark is certainly a fun way to discover rural New England.

Although it’s only a 3.5-mile (5.6km) journey, the train chugs by at a leisurely pace and plenty of time is allowed for soaking in the 360-degree views at the top, so the round trip takes around three hours. If the weather’s clear, travelers can see five states from this vantage point, as well as Canada and the Atlantic Ocean. Tickets start at around $99 per person, with two daily departures at 8.30am and 3pm from May to October.

Georgetown Loop Railroad, Georgetown to Silver Plume, Colorado

Want to travel across this terrifying-looking railroad? While we admit the aptly named Devil's Gate High Bridge, which features a 100-foot (30m) drop over Clear Creek, isn’t for the faint-hearted, this thrilling experience is at the top of many rail buffs’ wish lists. It’s no surprise that when it was completed back in 1884, this circular railroad connecting Georgetown and Silver Plume was seen as an engineering marvel and attracted visitors from all over.

Today, Georgetown Loop Railroad’s legendary status endures. Between May and October, there are at least three daily departures from Devil’s Gate Depot, as well as select weekend departures from Silver Plume, costing $30.95 for adults and $24.95 for kids. You can also book a walking tour of the nearby Lebanon Silver Mine, learning about Georgetown’s long standing connection with the precious metal (it was formerly known as 'The Silver Queen of the Rockies').

Grand Canyon Railway, Williams to Grand Canyon Village, Arizona

It’s been a favorite road trip destination for decades, but you might not have thought to visit the Grand Canyon by rail. Yet this underrated (and surprisingly affordable) excursion has to be one of the most beautiful train journeys on the planet. Beginning in Williams, a small town 30 miles (48km) west of Flagstaff, Grand Canyon Railway meanders through ponderosa pine forests and open prairie, stopping at Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim before heading back to Williams.

As scenic trips go, it’s a steal. One-way fares in Pullman Class start from just $33.50, Coach Class (pictured) is $41 each way, or to take in the scenery in style you can travel in a glass-ceiling observation dome car from $94.50 each way. During the journey, passengers are encouraged to get into the spirit of the Old West and enjoy the musical entertainment, cowboy characters and other surprises onboard.

Jose Cuervo Express, Guadalajara to Tequila, Mexico

Tequila fans need look no further: we’ve found the perfect train for you. Traveling the 11-hour journey between Guadalajara and the town of Tequila, the Jose Cuervo Express allows you to taste a wide variety of tequilas while whizzing past endless agave fields, all in a highly luxurious setting. Along the way, guests will also tour a distillery to discover how the spirit is made, wander the historic streets of Tequila and see an agave harvesting demonstration.

<p>Trains depart from Guadalajara every Saturday and passengers can choose between four carriages: Express, Premium Plus, Diamond or Elite (pictured). On this luxury option, enjoy a large adults-only lounge and open bar providing a range of tequila cocktails, with decor inspired by the old-school glamor of the Orient Express. Tickets start at around $128. </p> <p><a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/galleries/121327/the-worlds-most-luxurious-train-journeys?page=1"><strong>These are the world's most luxurious train journeys</strong></a></p>
