Maui Geography

Let’s get a lay of the island so you can plan your trip easier!

Maui is the second-largest island in Hawaii and is uniquely shaped. It was formed by two volcanoes, Haleakala and the West Maui Mountains.

Like all of the Hawaiian islands, there are two sides: a leeward side and a windward side. The leeward side of the island is drier and the windward side is wetter.

There are five distinct areas on the island: West Maui, South Maui, Central Maui, Upcountry Maui, and East Maui (Hana).

maui travel guide map

On West Maui, you’ll find long stretches of beaches, warm weather, numerous snorkeling spots, plenty of resorts and vacation rentals, and jaw-dropping sunsets. West Maui suffered the devastating Lahaina fire in 2023 , which will take years to recover from. The historic town of Lahaina has been destroyed and is not open to visitors .

Other areas of West Maui are open to visitors, including the Ka’anapali resort area, snorkeling spots like Kapalua Bay, and the picturesque Napili Bay. Please visit the west side with care and aloha as they rebuild . Check out our favorite things to do in Kapalua and Napili if you want to enjoy the areas of West Maui that are welcoming visitors.

Another popular spot with visitors, South Maui dials up the luxury. Here you’ll find the most luxurious hotels on the island, stunning beaches, and views of Molokini Crater and Kahoolawe.

Popular spots here include the resort community of Wailea, the small town of Kihei, the expansive Makena Beach, and plenty of tour boats leaving for snorkeling at Molokini Crater.

Check out our favorite beaches and things to do in South Maui .

Central Maui

You’ll fly into central Maui when you land at Kahului Airport (OGG), the main commercial airport on the island. But that’s not all you’ll find here. Once you leave the main airport area, you’ll find plenty of small restaurants and shops, dramatic mountain views, and great hiking.

Visit the sacred Iao Valley or hike the Waihee Ridge Trail. Or head up to the north coast to stroll through the town of Paia and eat at the most famous restaurant in Hawaii: Mama’s Fish House ( Is Mama’s Fish House Best for Lunch or Dinner? ).

Maui Travel Guide - Mama's Fish House

Kahului is a main cruise port in Hawaii , so if you’re visiting on a cruise ship, be sure to check out all our Hawaii cruise resources , including our favorite Maui shore excursions .

Upcountry Maui

Bring your sweater and head up the slope of Haleakala to Upcountry Maui. You’ll climb in elevation as you get beautiful views of the ocean below you.

You can visit the small cowboy town of Makawao, visit one of the many farms on the island to sample fresh tropical produce, or continue heading up the mountain to the top and visit Haleakala National Park.

In Upcountry, the drive is often just as beautiful as the destination. Most of our favorite Maui farm tours are in Upcountry. And don’t forget to check out our favorite things to do in upcountry Maui .

Visit East Maui by taking the famous Road to Hana (decide here if the Road to Hana is worth it for you!). This drive takes you around 620 curves, over 59 bridges, and delivers views of a stunning coastline, lush landscape, and stunning waterfalls.

This windward part of the island is remote and rugged and an adventure. See our Maui Itinerary on how to plan your stops to Hana or check out our favorite Road to Hana Guided Tour .

We also put together a comprehensive guide on the Road to Hana , and we’ll help you choose the right route for your group.

What’s the Best Time of Year to Visit Maui?

While you may be visiting from a place that has four seasons each year, in Hawaii there are just two: summer (kau) and winter (hooilo):

Luckily, the weather on Maui is warm and pleasant year-round, so there’s truly no bad time to visit. But our favorite months to visit are April/May and September/October, because there are fewer visitors, the weather is great, and it’s a little less expensive to travel in this off-peak season period.

  • Visiting Maui in the Winter: Is it a Good Idea?

While the winter months get slightly cooler temperatures and there is a little more rain, staying on South or West Maui will increase your chances of sunny days and tank top temperatures. That’s why Maui is such a great place to visit year-round.

And if you’re curious about ocean temperatures and conditions, we have good news. The ocean temperature is always between 75 to 80 degrees, year-round. That means you can swim comfortably in January and in June.

But aside from temperature, consider waves.

best Surf Lessons lahaina Maui

During the summer months, you can usually find calm water around the island. The exception is if there is a storm (or remnants of a storm) passing by or if the island is getting a south swell.

South Maui is known to get swells during the summer months, which can bring in larger waves and choppy conditions. West Maui will generally have calmer ocean conditions in the summer.

In the winter, north swells can bring choppy water and large waves to the north, west, and east side of the island, while the south usually stays a bit calmer.

Getting to Maui

There are two airports on Maui, though one is used very infrequently. The main airport is Kahului Airport (OGG) . This airport is located in central Maui, approximately 30 minutes from Wailea and 45 minutes from Ka’anapali. Kahului airport serves inter-island, domestic, and international flights.

The second airport, Kapalua Airport, is located in West Maui, just a short distance from Ka’anapali. You’ll primarily find flights to Kapalua Airport from Honolulu on Mokulele Airlines. Island Hopping in Hawaii: How To Do It Right .

Renting a Car and Getting Around the Maui

Should you rent a car in Maui? Most likely, yes. While Maui does have a bus system and has uber and taxis, renting a car makes traveling around on your vacation easier.

We’ve done the math for you to help you decide if renting a car in Maui is right for you .

Our favorite tip for anyone visiting Hawaii is to book with Discount Hawaii Car Rental . When we travel inter-island or we have friends in town, we use them 95% of the time. They offer the most competitive rates, they work with national agencies, you don’t have to pre-book, and you can cancel at any time. There are also great local companies to rent from, like Kihei Rent a Car. See our Should You Rent a Car on Maui video for more information.

If you can’t get a car (remember that great rental car shortage of summer 2021?) or you just don’t want to get one, here are 11 tips for getting around Maui without a car .

For the most part, the roads on Maui are well paved and easy to navigate with any type of car — no 4-wheel drive required! Though if you want to rent a jeep…it really is fun.

If you don’t want to rent a car but still want to get out and see the sights, a guided tour is a great option. Two of our favorite tours that will pick you up from your hotel and take you around are the Haleakala Guided Sunrise Tour and the Road to Hana Guided Tour .

Where to Stay on Maui

Ready to book your stay on Maui? Maui has plenty of five-star resorts, outstanding vacation rentals, and a range of options in between. But what is right for you?

For details on our favorite hotels and vacation rentals on Maui, see our Where to Section Maui !

Should you stay in a hotel or vacation rental in Maui?

Go for a hotel if you’re looking for the traditional resort experience with big pools, nearby beaches, and restaurants within walking distance. Opt for a vacation rental if you want access to a kitchen, are looking for space, or are looking to save money.

We routinely stay in both. We’ll book a vacation rental for the majority of our stay so we have access to a kitchen and a little more space for the kids. Then we’ll treat ourselves to a great resort for a few days to enjoy the pool and other amenities. This has been a winning combo for us recently.

If you’re still not sure what you want to do, we break down the difference between choosing a hotel and a vacation rental in Hawaii .

Maui Vacation Rental for Large Groups

Should you stay in Ka’anapali, Wailea, Kihei, or…?

While there are five main areas on Maui, most visitors stay on either West Maui or South Maui to maximize their odds of sunshine, warm weather, and lack of rain.

Whether you should stay in West Maui (Ka’anapali, Lahaina, Napili, Kapalua) or South Maui (Kihei, Wailea, Makena) is often a heated debate. We try to help you make the right decision for you with these two articles:

How Many Days Should You Stay on Maui

According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority, in January 2022, the average length of stay for a visitor to Maui was nearly 10 days! While you might not be able to get away for that long, we recommend starting with at least a week on the island. There is so much to see and that gives you time to balance relaxation with adventure.

Read more about why we recommend spending at least a week on Maui . And don’t miss our Hawaii packing list as you’re getting ready to go.

Beaches and Snorkeling Spots on Maui

If you’re coming to Maui to snorkel, you’re in luck! In our opinion, Maui is the best island for snorkeling. Add in the stunning beaches, and you are in for a treat. Our favorite beaches include:

  • Kapalua Bay : There’s a reason this beach was named the best beach by Dr. Beach in 2018. A beautiful crescent-shaped beach that is partially protected from larger waves for most of the year, this is the perfect spot to spend the day. It’s also a fantastic snorkeling spot. Get the full details on Kapalua Bay .
  • Kahekili (Airport) Beach Park : This Ka’anapali Beach is a gem. It’s usually less crowded than the beaches in Ka’anapali, it has a large, free parking lot. And there’s a nice reef for snorkeling. Plan your visit with our Airport Beach on Maui: The Full Guide .
  • Wailea Beach : There’s a reason some of the biggest resorts on Maui are located on this beach. It’s large, beautiful, and has water that is generally easily swimmable. It’s a beautiful place to spend the entire day.

Maui is full of great beaches. Don’t miss our 17 favorite beaches on Maui , with directions and other details like amenities, parking, and lifeguard services. We also break down our favorite beaches in South Maui !

Remember that while the beaches in Hawaii are beautiful, they are not without risk. Currents, dangerous shore break, and changing ocean conditions make swimming in any ocean dangerous. Practice beach safety by swimming on beaches with lifeguards, obeying lifeguard flags, and when in doubt, don’t go out. This website has more excellent information to help keep you safe.

Best Time to Go

Things to know, how to get around, best hotels, best restaurants, things to do, areas to know, apps to download.

Maui is the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands. Its nickname is "The Valley Isle," which describes its geography as a large valley between two dormant volcanoes — Haleakala in the east and Mauna Kahalawai in the west. Haleakala's name means "House of the Sun," and it's the largest dormant volcano in the world at 10,023 feet high, 4,000 feet deep, and 21 miles across its crater. Mauna Kahalawai, an eroded volcano, is referred to as the West Maui Mountains.

Maui is known for its beaches, with over 120 miles of shoreline and 80 beaches — more than any other island in Hawaii. Maui's beaches vary from gentle surf to crashing waves, with fine white sand and even rare black and red sand beaches near Hana.

Kahului Airport is located in Central Maui on the northern edge of the land between Haleakala and the West Maui Mountains. Five regions define the island. West Maui is home to the resort areas of Kaanapali, Kapalua, and the town of Lahaina. The resort communities of Kihei, Wailea, and Makena are located in South Maui.

The road to Hana and Haleakala State Park are in East Maui. Upcountry is located on the higher elevations around Haleakala, where farms, dairies, and ranches take advantage of the volcanic soil and wetter weather. In Central Maui, Iao Valley State Park offers hiking trails, forests, and running streams.

Hawaii follows Hawaii Standard Time (GMT-10 hours), which is five hours behind Eastern Standard Time and two hours behind Pacific Standard Time. Hawaii does not observe Daylight Saving Time, so add one extra hour to the time difference during this period (March through November).

The summer season, mainly April through November, sees higher temperatures and less precipitation. June, July, and August are popular with vacationers when schools are generally out, and the weather is warm and dry.

Winter, from December through March, is cooler, but still warm and sunny although there's a bit more rain. The weather varies across different areas of the island, and the western and southern shores are generally drier. Lahaina and Kaanapali in West Maui get around 10 inches of rain annually, compared to higher elevations that can see more than 300 inches of rain each year.

Winter is a popular time for visitors to get away from cold weather at home and enjoy Maui's mild winter. Whale watching season from December through May, peaking from January through March, is also a great attraction during winter.

Haleakala is a dormant volcano, but it's not extinct. It last erupted between 1480 and 1600, according to the USGS, and is expected to erupt again in the future. At more than 10,000 feet in elevation, its summit sometimes receives snow in winter.

Honokohau Falls plunges 1,119 feet, dropping in two tiers. The tallest waterfall on Maui and one of the highest in the world, Honokohau Falls is located in an inaccessible valley in the West Maui Mountains. A helicopter tour is the best way to see it.

Formerly a whaling port and center of the whaling industry in the early- to mid-19th century, Lahaina was the original capital of Hawaii until 1850.

Maui is the name of the island as well as the name of a county. Maui County includes the islands of Maui, Lanai, Molokai, and Kahoolawe.

Charles Lindbergh, aviator and explorer, is buried on Maui in a grave at the Palapala Ho'omau Church along the road to Hana.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture requires a declaration form for each person arriving in Hawaii in connection with rules regarding uninspected plants and animals. When departing, your luggage will be screened for uninspected fruits and plants, but you may take inspected fresh flowers and fruits home.

The main airport on Maui is Kahului Airport (OGG), and there are smaller commuter airports in Kapalua and Hana. Molokai and Lanai are served by their own airports.

Every year, as many as 10,000 humpback whales travel more than 3,500 miles from Alaskan waters to Hawaii for their winter migration. Maui is one of the best places to see them as they feed, give birth, and nurture their young. Many can be seen from the shore, and whale watching boat cruises are also available.

The official languages of Hawaii are English and Hawaiian, although Hawaiian is not commonly spoken. Major resort areas often have customer service representatives who speak Japanese.

You can get around Maui by shuttle, tour bus, taxi, or public transportation. But to really experience all that Maui offers, you should consider reserving a rental car in advance from the Kahului or Kapalua Airport.

The Maui Public Bus system consists of 13 bus routes that provide service in and between various communities throughout the island. All of the routes operate daily including holidays.

Best Time To Visit Maui

Where to stay in maui, maui itinerary, day 1 itinerary in maui, day 2 itinerary in maui, day 3 and beyond, staying safe in maui, day trips from maui, faq on maui itinerary.

Maui experiences warm temperatures year-round. The weather is never extreme, and apart from rain, it’s very predictable. If you’re planning a trip to Maui, here’s a quick look at the different seasons!

The summer months (June – August) produce the warmest temperatures and little-to-no rain. If your ideal vacation in Maui is laying beachside all day, this is the best season to plan a trip! In fact, it’s one of the top destinations for August , July and June vacations!

When to Visit Maui

Heading into Fall (September – November) the weather is still very enjoyable, and the summer crowds will be gone. Although this island is touristy year-round, this is considered the least busiest time to travel to Maui.

During the winter months (December – February) the holiday crowds flock to the island to escape the cooler temperatures in the northern hemisphere. This is the start of Maui’s rainy season, but not to worry, each day will still provide plenty of sunshine!

If you’re touring Maui in the Spring (March-May) you can expect warm temperatures and little-to-no rain. If you’re planning a trip to Maui, this is a great season to vacation there!

Whether you’re spending one day in Maui, or one week, you’re going to want to stay in a location that will make your Maui itinerary as accessible as possible.

When looking for accommodation, try and pick a place as close to the beach as possible. This way you’ll spend less time driving and more time relaxing.

where to stay in Maui

The west side of Maui is the touristy side. This is the best area to stay in if it’s your first time visiting Maui, as you’ll have access to the best Maui attractions! This is the area you’ll find the best luxury resorts and seaside cottages. Keep in mind, since this is the most touristy area of Maui, it’s also the most expensive.

The west side includes Kaanapali, Honokowai, Kahana, Napili, Kapalua, and Lahaina . This may seem like a lot of options, but Maui is a smaller sized island and everything is clustered close together.

The south of Maui is another great option. Accommodation tends to be slightly less expensive than the west, and the scenery is just as beautiful! Kihei, Wailea, and Makena are three great areas to stay in South Maui.

If you’re only able to plan a three-day itinerary in Maui, you’ll be able to see more of the island by staying in these locations.

With white sands, crashing waves, and beautiful sunsets right outside the front door, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better apartment in Maui . Split bedrooms and beach access make this ideal for a group looking to make the most of the waves.

Best budget hotel in Maui – Days Inn by Wyndham Maui Oceanfront

Days Inn by Wyndham Maui Oceanfront

This Maui hotel is located in south west Maui on Keawakapu beach, meaning guests will enjoy easy beachfront access. Whether you’re spending three days in Maui or backpacking through Hawaii with no end in sight, you’re going to need to figure out how to get around.

The best way to reach the most popular Maui points of interest is by car. The public transportation in Maui isn’t as convenient as other cities in the United States.

Car rental companies can be found at the Kahului or Kapalua airports, and renting a car is easy and convenient. Maui has a very simple layout and navigating the island is fairly straightforward. Renting a car is strongly encouraged if you have more than a five day itinerary planned, as you’ll have a lot of time for exploring the island!

Maui itinerary

However, if you’re not able to rent a car, don’t panic, there are other options available! If you’re only planning to spend a few days in Maui, you can use Uber to get around. This ride sharing app makes traveling in a new area hassle-free and is a great option for traveling shorter distances.

Maui’s bus system is an option, but it’s more suited for shorter distances. Not much information is available online, so if you plan to use it, it’s best to ask a local or someone at the accommodation you’re staying at.

Nakalele Blowhole | Honolua Bay | Kapalua Beach | Lahaina Town | Experience a Hawaiian Luau Show

Start day one of your Maui trip itinerary by checking out the best spots on the west side of the island. Grab your sunscreen and shades, and get ready to spend a gorgeous day outdoors in west Maui!

Day 1 / Stop 1 – Nakalele Blowhole

  • Why it’s awesome: This natural blowhole shoots water up into the sky on a regular basis!
  • Cost: Free!
  • Food nearby: The Honolua Farms Kitchen is the closest restaurant to the Nakalele Blowhole. This organic and eco-friendly restaurant serves delicious and wholesome meals, including vegan and vegetarian options!

The Nakalele Blowhole is set on the island’s northwestern coast. It’s a natural geyser where seawater trapped in an underwater lava tube makes a forceful explosion that erupts on a regular basis! A column of water is powerfully jettisoned up to 100-feet in the air!

There are numerous trails that lead down to the blowhole. We recommend taking the trail from mile marker 38.5, it’s considered the safest route and also offers a look at the famous heart shaped hole in the rock! This is a popular photo posted by many Instagrammers and is one of the ultimate things to do in Maui .

nakalele blowhole

The hike down from the main road takes about 10-15 minutes. We strongly recommend you wear proper shoes for this excursion, as hiking down in sandals or flip-flops can be dangerous, especially when the ground is wet.

Despite the geyser’s beauty, it’s important to remember the blowhole is dangerous and tourists need to keep a safe distance, as accidents happen frequently. If you stand too close, you risk slipping and falling on the rocks. Tiny micro-ecosystems live inside of geyser’s avoid getting to close to protect them fragile ecosystems.

Admire and appreciate the blowhole from a distance, and avoid venturing too close. As a rule of thumb, the safest way to view the Nakalele Blowhole is to simply to stay on the dry rocks.

Insider Tip: If you’re traveling to Maui from December to May, make sure to be on the lookout  for whales leaping in the distance!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – Honolua Bay

  • Why it’s awesome: Honolua is a rocky bay that’s perfect for snorkeling and surfing.
  • Food nearby: The Plantation House is a popular Hawaiian eatery with breathtaking views and delicious island inspired meals.

Honolua Bay is located on the northwest corner of the island. During the summer months, this is a great area to snorkel in. It’s one of the few sheltered bays to snorkel on Maui. The waves stay calm, the visibility is great, plus the water is loaded with beautiful coral and marine life! Since this area is protected by a bay, this is a great spot for snorkeling beginners !

The best snorkeling reefs are a bit of a swim from shore. Keep this in mind so you don’t give up too early on your swim. After entering the water, swim near the rocky shore on the right side of the bay until you reach the reef, it will be about 600-feet from the beach. It’s common to see big catamarans dropping off snorkelers in this spot.

Honolua Bay

During the winter months, the waves pick up and this area turns into a popular place for surfing. Surfers from all over the world travel here, and many surf league competitions take place in Honolua Bay.

Come early to secure a spot in the parking lot, or, park along the road. To access the water you’ll take a short hike through a lush green forest. There are two trails to choose from that will take you to the beach for snorkeling. Both trails are basically flat and easy to navigate.

The first trailhead is near the first bend in the road past the overlook and is a 700-foot hike to the beach. The second trailhead is just past the second big left bend in the road past the overlook and is a 1,500-foot hike to the beach. The beach is rocky, so this area is more geared towards water activities.

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Kapalua Beach

  • Why it’s awesome: Beautiful sandy beach in a protected cove along Maui’s west coast, perfect for lounging in the sun and snorkeling.
  • Food nearby: Merriman’s Maui is a renowned oceanfront restaurant featuring farm-to-table cuisine in an elegant setting. Stop by during the afternoon and check out their daily happy hour specials!

This is the kind of beach that comes to mind when you think of Hawaii. Kapalua Bay was named Best Beach in the World by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler magazine and the Best Beach in America by the Travel Channel!

Kapalua Beach is located on Maui’s west shore and is known for its golden, white sandy beach front. It’s the perfect place to relax and soak up the Maui sun! It attracts a fair sized crowd, but there is always plenty of room to spread out your beach towel.

Kapalua Beach

The bay is protected by two reefs that extend out on both ends forming a C-shaped cove, giving the water a feeling of being sheltered from the open ocean. This makes it another fantastic spot on Maui for snorkeling! This is a great spot for kids to snorkel in particular, as the ocean will literally be a few feet from your beach towel. Swim masks or goggles are recommended to look out for coral and rocks that fill the bay.

There is a 1.7 mile long paved oceanfront pathway that begins at Kapalua Beach and stretches north along the coastline, bridging across three different bays; perfect for a nice stroll before or after lounging on this luxurious beach!

There is beach parking conveniently located next to the public restrooms and showers. Kapalua Bay includes a small beach activities desk offering a variety of water-sports equipment and activities. This picturesque beach is a must-visit location on your Maui vacation itinerary!

Day 1 / Stop 4 – Lahaina Town

  • Why it’s awesome: Lahaina Town is a touristy area of west Maui with a compact and pedestrian friendly Main Street. This area is filled with restaurants, bars, shops, art-galleries, and more!
  • Cost: Free to visit!
  • Food nearby: Located right on Front Street, Kimo’s Maui is a relaxed seafood spot with gorgeous ocean views and friendly service.

Lahaina is the second most visited spot on the island. This town was the former capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1820 to 1845. Today, it is a compact and touristy area of west Maui. The main area of the town is Front Street. This walkable street is filled with eclectic eateries, buzzing bars, and souvenirs stores selling everything from local handicraft items to touristy trinkets.

You’ll find plenty of art galleries that feature the works of local artists and world-renowned artists, and they’re all free to visit! Lahaina is home to the primary harbor in west Maui and is where the majority of west Maui snorkeling and whale watching tours depart.

Lahaina Town

The most famous feature in Lahaina is the Banyan Tree, located in Lahaina Banyan Court Park. This historic tree was planted in 1873 to memorialize the 50th anniversary of the first American Protestant mission in Lahaina. The banyan tree is not only the largest banyan tree in Hawaii, it’s one of the largest banyan trees in the United States; Its extensive trunk and aerial root system covers 0.66-acres!

Free Lahaina Maui walking tours are also available and a great way for tourists to discover the rich history of this popular ocean town. Add this stop to your Maui itinerary to take a break from the beach and explore an exciting area of the island!

Day 1 / Stop 5 – Experience a Hawaiian Luau Show

  • Why it’s awesome: Enjoy a traditional Hawaiian dinner and beachside Luau performance.
  • Cost: Approximately USD $125.00 for adults and USD $80.00 for children.
  • Food nearby: Food is included in every Luau that showcases the island cuisine. Popular staple items include a kalua pig, island style fried rice, poke, ahi, poi, and more! The open-bar serves both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, including tropical drinks, cocktails, wine, beer, and soft drinks.

A Luau is an exhilarating blend of traditional Polynesian food, storytelling, dance and Hawaiian culture. As the sun sets behind swaying palm trees and flickering tiki torches, you’ll enjoy a spectacular night unlike any other!

Enjoy a Hawaiian feast accompanied by an immersive dinner show. Dinner is offered buffet-style and is made up of a large assortment of island specialties, including desserts! An open bar is available for guests throughout the night.

Hawaiian Luau Show

Witness hula and Polynesian dancers tell traditional stories through rhythm and song with a backdrop of crashing waves and the warm ocean breeze. Luaus are offered in the evenings and last for approximately three to four hours.

There are several venues around the island where you’ll find luau’s, the majority are offered on the west and south side of Maui. It is recommended to buy your luau tickets as far in advance as possible, as this is a popular attraction for tourists, and shows can fill-up fast. A luau is an essential experience on any Maui itinerary, and the perfect way to end your first day in Maui!

Now that you’ve explored all the main highlights on the west of Maui, check out a few inland activities and then head south for more island fun! Let’s continue with the perfect two day itinerary in Maui!

Day 2 / Stop 1 – Iao Valley State Park

  • Why it’s awesome: This state park offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Maui Valley and easy hiking trails that are suited for all skill levels.
  • Cost: Entrance is free, parking fee is USD $5.00 per car.
  • Food nearby: 808 on Main serves gourmet sandwiches, salads, burgers, and snacks. Hit up this casual restaurant for a quick bite to eat before or after you enter the park, or order to-go and take something with you!

Iao Valley State Park is located in central Maui just west of Wailuku. This serene 4,000-acre, 10-mile long park is home to one of the most recognizable of Maui’s landmarks, the 1,200-foot tall Iao Needle. This stunning green-mantled rock overlooks Iao stream and is the perfect place for easy hiking and sightseeing.

There are numerous hiking trails, many of them leading to or offering excellent views of the Iao Needle and the Maui valley. The most popular path is the 0.6 mile Iao Needle Lookout Trail and Ethnobotanical Loop. There is a paved walkway that leads from the parking lot straight to the Iao Needle and through a botanical garden.

Iao Valley State Park

The majority of the hikes are suited for all skill levels, making this activity perfect for older folks and kids! The park is well maintained, with paved walkways, steps, and signage with historical information. Enjoy a peaceful walk in nature and be surrounded by tropical plants and a beautiful soft-flowing stream!

The Iao needle is sometimes covered in clouds, so an early start is your best bet for a good view. The park has restrooms located at the beginning of the Lookout Trail. There are no drinking fountains or other refreshments offered on the grounds, so it’s best to bring plenty of water with you. Walk around at your own pace or take a tour .

Day 2 / Stop 2 – Maui Tropical Plantation Tour

  • Why it’s awesome: Learn about the tropical fruits and staple crops of Maui.
  • Cost: USD $24.00 for adult tickets and USD $12.00 for children (3-12 years old).
  • Food nearby: The Mill House is a restaurant located on the Maui Tropical Plantation. Enjoy dishes inspired by fresh and local ingredients while taking in the beauty of the farmland and the breathtaking Waikapu Valley!

Discover all things related to Maui’s most precious commodities. The Maui Tropical Plantation is a 60-acre working plantation. Take a narrated tram tour and learn about the origins of Hawaii’s most popular commercial fruits!

Learn interesting facts about Hawaii staple crops, including pineapples, bananas, coffee, macadamia nuts, sugarcane, papayas, and more! Witness the art of husking a coconut and sample some of Hawaii’s tastiest fruits!

Maui Tropical Plantation Tour

The Maui Tropical Plantation is perfect for coffee drinkers! Visit the Mill House Roasting Company on the property and experience craft coffee at its finest! The coffee beans are grown naturally on the island and roasted in small batches to achieve the best quality! Enjoy a drink from their full-service coffee house and learn more about Hawaii’s most popular bean!

This plantation also contains several zip-lines! Try out the introductory zip line where you’ll soar through the Maui tropical plantation groups. Or, try out the longest, highest and fastest zip-line course on Maui! This exhilarating course features 8 zip-lines stretching the West Maui Mountains! This family-friendly zip-line course has an age limit of 5 years old.

Visit the Gift Shop and pick up all your authentic made in Maui souvenirs, snacks, and aloha wear!  This tropical plantation tour is perfect for everyone, but families in particular will love this addition to their Maui itinerary!

Day 2 / Stop 3 – Wailea Beach

  • Why it’s awesome: Wailea Beach is a well maintained public beach in Maui with a wide coastline, soft sand, and a water activities desk!
  • Food nearby: Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman is a popular eatery that offers friendly service as well as a bar with a vast beer and cocktail menu. Enjoy gourmet pub grub with a Hawaiian spin; the majority of ingredients are sourced from organic and local ingredients!

Wailea Beach is located in south Maui. This is another beautiful Hawaiian beach that is a must-see on your Maui itinerary! Characterized by gold-colored sand and outlined with tall palm trees, this beach is the perfect place to relax and enjoy some aquatic activities!

The shoreline caters to the guests of several nearby resorts, making it very well maintained and geared towards tourists. Wailea beach offers a much less rugged coastline compared to some of Maui’s other beaches. There is a paved walkway that connects the beach to the area’s hotels, resorts, shops and restaurants.

An added bonus is that visitors to this beach will have access to water sports equipment rentals of the neighboring resorts! The waters of Wailea Beach stay relatively calm, making it a great spot for aquatic enthusiasts! Snorkel, swim, paddle-board or just relax, this beach is perfect for everyone!

There are well maintained public facilities, including a paved walkway that runs the length of the beach. Bathrooms, showers and plenty of free public parking is also available! If you’re feeling adventurous, take a helicopter tour !

Day 2 / Stop 4 – Makena State Park

  • Why it’s awesome: Spacious and scenic stretch of coastline with numerous beaches and attractions.
  • Food nearby: Try out Big Beach BBQ for some tasty island barbecue. This casual eatery serves classic Hawaiian comfort food out of a large green street-side food-truck!

Makena State Park is located approximately four miles south of the Shops at Wailea. The beaches in this State Park have a wild, isolated feel you don’t often find on Maui. You’ll find glassy waters, turtles, and fantastic views of Molokini Crater and Kaho’olawe! Be cautious when the surf is up. Although there are lifeguards on duty, some areas of the beach are known for strong undertows and pounding surf.

If you feel like hiking, head to the top of the 360 foot Pu’u Ola’i cinder cone. Although it looks relatively easy, the hill is made of a cinder called tephra, and is basically like walking up loose gravel. The walk is a bit of a battle, but the view from the top is simply stunning, and there’s always a cool dip in the ocean waiting for you below!

Makena State Park

There is a black sand beach, also known as Oneuli Beach, located to the north of Earthquake Hill. Although the “sand” is mostly coarse black cinders, this beach is still gorgeous and a unique place to visit in Maui.

Makena is also home to Turtle Town, one of the best places on the island to see turtles! It is not uncommon to see more than ten turtles in one visit! If you’re spending a weekend in Maui and plan to visit Makena, keep in mind that the beaches will be busy! Nonetheless, this stop is a great addition to your itinerary for Maui!

Day 2 / Stop 5 – Sunset at Keawakapu Beach

  • Why it’s awesome: Not all sunsets are created equal, and the enchanting transformation of the day-to-night sky in Keawakapu Beach is solid proof!
  • Food nearby: Sarento’s On the Beach is an ocean-side Mediterranean restaurant. Enjoy beautiful views, excellent service, and an extensive wine list.

After finishing up at Makena State Park, you’ll probably be heading back up north, as there won’t be too many more attractions if you continue down south. This is a great chance to stop at Keawakapu Beach for an epic sunset!

This beach is slow paced and relaxed, with plenty of shaded areas and grassy space to sit and enjoy the views. Since this beach doesn’t normally get as busy as other Hawaiian beaches found in the area, it’s the perfect setting to enjoy a sunset.

Keawakapu Beach

Make sure to keep an eye out for marine life, as turtles can be spotted bobbing their heads in the water and if it’s whale season (November through May) you might see North Pacific Humpback whales grace the Maui waters during their annual winter migration! There’s also a memorable scuba diving tour available !

The beach is roughly ½ a mile long. There is a parking lot and shower facilities available. Behind the beach you’ll find numerous resorts, hotels, and restaurants. Relax with the warm ocean breeze and take in the aloha spirit. If you’re going to Maui, make sure to visit this beach for a sunset you’ll never forget!

Tiki Beach Hostel

Tiki Beach Hostel

This Maui accommodation is great value! This hostel provides guests free use of boogie boards and access to beach chairs, as well as snorkeling equipment. For more awesome hostels, check out our favorite hostels in Hawaii.

  • Free Parking

Now that we’re done covering your two day itinerary in Maui, you’re going to need a few more activities to fill your Maui itinerary. Here are some more noteworthy attractions, as well as some really cool day trips from Maui !

Waianapanapa State Park

  • Located along the scenic 64.4-mile long Road to Hana.
  • Experience a mesmerizing black sand beach!
  • Swim in fresh water caves.

Waianapanapa State Park offers the sort of scenery you see on Hawaiian postcards. This tropical oasis is one of the most picturesque sites on the Road to Hana and a must-see attraction if you’re renting a car and taking a Maui road trip!

There are a number of activities to partake in. The black sand beach is the biggest draw for visitors, although, the ‘sand’ is actually tiny black pebbles. This is a great place for stunning photo opportunities, as the black sand contrasts beautifully against the turquoise blue water.

Waianapanapa State Park

There is an impressive lava tube site that opens up to the tranquil ocean waters. A natural sea arch and sea cliffs that overlook Pailoa Bay. Rejuvenating freshwater caves, numerous hiking trails, and so much more!

This State Park has so much packed into one-stop, you could easily spend your whole three-day itinerary in Maui at this location!

If you need some recommendations for places to stay near Waianapanapa State Park, check out our guide on where to stay in Hana .

The Pools at ‘Ohe’o

  • Also named the seven sacred pools (although there are more than 7 pools).
  • A series of waterfalls and pools in a tucked away scenic location.
  • The Pools of ‘Ohe’o are located in Haleakala National Park along the Road to Hana.

The remote valley of the Haleakala National Park features cascading waterfalls and freshwater pools that are surrounded by rainforests and unbelievable natural beauty. Take a dip in the tranquil water of these tiered pools that are fed by waterfalls.

The Kipahulu area of Haleakala National Park also contains plenty of self-guided hiking trails that weave through the bamboo rainforest and past roaring waterfalls! The Pipiwai Trail is a great choice for avid hikers and one of the island’s best trails! This three to five-hour hike leads to the 400-foot Waimoku Falls .

The Pools at 'Ohe'o

Since this attraction is located inside a national park, you’ll need to pay a USD $15.00 admission fee. This fee allows you access inside the park for three days (make sure to save your receipt)! There are full National Park facilities available, including a Ranger Station with lots of great information, a campground, large paved parking lots, and a bathroom.

It is recommended to wear closed-toed shoes or sneakers, especially if you plan to hike, as the rocks can be slippery. This is a popular tourist spot on the Road to Hana, the earlier you go the less crowded it will be. It’s debatable how many days you need in Maui , but if you’re planning an itinerary for four days or longer, this is such a scenic and beautiful area of Maui, make sure to take advantage of visiting this location!

Ho’okipa Beach Park

  • World-renowned windsurfing and surfing destination.
  • Located in north Maui.
  • Free parking, showers and bathroom facilities.

Ho’okipa Beach is a long and narrow white sand beach. It is generally uncrowded with plenty of space to spread out. An exposed reef runs along most of the shore-bank, Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles can be frequently seen bobbing their heads in the water.

Swimmers usually stick to the shallow margins of the shoreline. On the Pavilions side there are small areas of sandy-bottom ocean with sheltered swimming areas, and small tidepools running the length of the middle of the beach. There are also lifeguard towers at both ends of the park.

Ho'okipa Beach Park

Beach is a Mecca to the windsurfing and surfing world. However, if you choose to partake in this activity, make sure you’re skilled enough to handle the conditions, especially if you see the orange flags are out.

If you’re more keen on watching surfers instead of partaking in the activity, head to Ho’okipa Lookout. This lookout is on the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean and is a great place to relax and watch people catch some pretty epic waves!

You might also find some calming USA yoga retreats nearby.

Maui Ocean Center, The Aquarium of Hawaii

  • 3 acres facility that is the largest tropical reef aquarium in the Western Hemisphere.
  • The Maui Ocean Center is open 365 days a year, from 9:00am to 5:00pm.
  • Located in southwest Maui.

The Hawaiian Aquarium is the only aquarium in the world dedicated to fostering understanding and respect for Hawaii’s marine life. Enter the Marine Mammal Discovery Center and enjoy more than 60 interactive exhibits, including interactive modules, video monitors, and narrative boards!

There are hundreds of underwater animals, including live coral reef fishes. Learn about reef, blacktip, whitetip, hammerhead, and tiger sharks; considered the most dangerous sharks to inhabit tropical waters!

Maui Ocean Center, The Aquarium of Hawaii

Get up close to playful green sea turtles and stingrays. Walk through an impressive 54-foot tunnel to a gigantic 750,000 gallon underwater world!

There are also two restaurants where you can enjoy an ocean view dining experience. Don’t leave without checking out The Maui Ocean Treasures gift shop, the perfect place to pick up some fun and educational aquarium themed souvenirs !

  • Scenic vineyard and commercial winery.
  • Located in south Maui.
  • Reservations are not required for groups of less than 8 people.

If you’re a Maui bound wine enthusiast, make sure to check out Maui Wine for a tropical wine tasting experience! Taste their famed pineapple wines, exclusive small production wines, and sparkling wines. Step inside the King’s Cottage tasting room and enjoy a piece of history! This tasting room was originally built in the 1870s to accommodate the last reigning king of Hawaii!

Maui Wine

Tastings are offered every day from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and complimentary guided tours of the historic estate are offered everyday at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm.

For a more personalized experience, book a private wine tasting at the historic “Old Jail,” which once served as captain James Makee’s private office. Reservations are required for the Old Jail tasting and are only available once a day, at 2:15 pm.

Whether you’re spending one day in Maui, or many, safety is an important thing to keep in mind!

Overall, Hawaii is a very safe place to travel to. However, it is always recommended that tourists take precautions when traveling to a new destination.

If you are traveling with a car in Maui, never leave valuables in plain sight in your vehicle. Keep them locked in your trunk, or even better, at your accommodation. Car break-ins are known to happen, especially if things are left in plain view.

If you are traveling solo, make sure to keep to the tourist areas. Follow our guide for recommended places to stay in Maui to be sure you’re heading somewhere safe. Maui is filled with beautiful hiking paths and endless coastlines; but it’s best to keep to the more popular trails and beaches.

Exploring unfamiliar territory by yourself can be fun, but there is a safe way to do it. Leave a note in your hotel room saying where you are going, or message a family member or friend back home.

The vast majority of people experience nothing more distressing than sunburn! Follow these simple guidelines and you should have nothing to worry about. Keep your wits about you and enjoy your time in Maui!

The Best Time to Plan a Trip to Maui

One of the best parts about a Hawaii vacation is that you can pretty much go any time of the year! For Maui weather, you can simply expect the beautifully warm tropical climate, and it’s pretty consistent all year long with daytime highs around 75-85°F (23-29°C). Bear in mind that Maui does receive a lot of rainfall especially during the winter months of December, January and February. This can bring some cloudy days and heavy showers in certain areas…

“Rain showers are typically short and are quickly followed by more sunshine, and, if you’re lucky, rainbows. Rainbows are always said to be a sign of good luck in the islands, meaning you’ll return one day if you spot one.” – Hawaii Travel Guide

Do you need a Rental Car in Maui?

To get the full Maui experience, you’ll 100% want to rent your own vehicle! I found the rates to be surprisingly affordable for Hawaii (I was expecting much worse), and it’ll provide for a lot more freedom. Besides, if you add up the costs of taxis and shuttle costs to the island’s main highlights, it’ll honestly be more than the entire car rental fee.

While gas prices on the island are expensive (it’s an island in the pacific ocean after all), it’s such an amazing feeling to drive along around these gorgeous highways at your own pace. Maui is the second biggest island in Hawaii, so there’s definitely a lot to explore, and some fun roads to drive along!

While it can be easy to just sit back and chill at the resort pool the entire trip (which I’ll admit I did quite a bit during my recent Maui vacation), I’d strongly recommend getting out and exploring everything the island has to offer!

Where To Stay on Maui Island

There really are dozens of incredible accommodation options to choose from on Maui Island, and it really just depends on where you want to be located, the price you’re willing to spend, and what you want to be close to.

I’d personally recommend staying on the west coast of Maui , which consists of the major hotel/ resort hubs of Kapalua , Kaanapali , and Lahaina. This is easily the most scenic region on the island and is packed with tons of pristine beaches, coves, restaurants, and resorts. While it’s about a forty-minute drive from the airport, it’s the most lively and beautiful area and should be included in any Hawaii trip planner!

There are a lot of different resorts and condos down from Kihei all the way down to Wailea, but I wasn’t impressed by the beaches that much. While they are a bit more centrally located, I’d definitely recommend staying up in Kapalua or in the Lahaina area.  While you’ll need to do some research and find the best place for you, here are a couple of solid options that would provide for comfortable and enjoyable stays!

My main recommendation for accommodation in Maui is by booking a VRBO, as there are tons of incredible options available and can be more affordable than the expensive hotels. Here are are a few of my personal favorites:

  • Luxury OCEAN FRONT Condo Truly 5 Star
  • Stunning Views From Only Double Lanai Penthouse Unit
  • Direct Beachfront Spectacular Ocean Views Newly Renovated!!

Ritz Carlton Kapalua: The Best Luxury Resort

During our most recent trip to Maui, we stayed at the Ritz Carlton Kapalua for five nights on Maui, and it was absolutely spectacular! Staying at the Ritz really turned our trip to Maui into an “ultimate vacation” experience, and I was blown away by everything the resort has to offer.

From its unbeatable customer service (seriously, all the staff are super friendly), luxuriously comfortable rooms, an award-winning full-service spa, relaxing multi-tiered pool, fantastic dining options, beach access, helpful concierge desk, and lots more – it’s essentially got everything you look for in a 5* Resort in paradise!

While it may be one of the more expensive options in the area, the Ritz Carlton will provide an unforgettable stay for your Maui vacation, and is absolutely worth every penny!

Napili Sunset Beach Front Resort: Best Budget Resort

If you’re looking for a more affordable option in the area, then book yourself into one of the beautiful apartments at the Napili Sunset Beach Front Resort .

The units are clean and kitted out with everything you may need. Fully equipped kitchens, free wi-fi, an outdoor pool, and quick access to some of the best sandy beaches in the Kapalua area – this place would be a fantastic budget option!

You are just a few steps away from the Napili Bay beach, you can’t find a better location at a better price. Enjoy long days on the beach or get active with the water sports and snorkeling activities offered by the hotel.

The service is exceptional and it’s a top-pick for Maui,  also rated for the best value in Lahaina, so ideal for couples, families & solo travelers who are looking to save a bit of money!

Maui Vacation Planner & Travel Accommodation Tips

One important thing to note about staying on the west side of Maui is that it is a considerable distance away from the starting point from the Road To Hana (one of the island’s major tourist attractions).

Some people recommend to split up the entire journey into two days and actually stay out there at the Travaasa Hana Resort (which you’ll want to book well in advance as it sells out frequently). While it’s definitely possible to do the Road to Hana in one day, it’ll be a LONG day on the windy roads if you do the self-drive option, and it’s just something to keep in mind.

Depending on how long you have on Maui, it could be nice to break up where you stay. For example, if you’re following this 7-day Maui itinerary, you could choose to do 4 Days in Maui in one area, and 3 days in another.

But without further ado, let’s get started…

Best Places to Stay - Maui Itinerary

Maui Itinerary Day 1: Helicopter Views & Iao Valley State Park

There really is no better way to start your Maui vacation than getting a bird’s eye view of the island. Prepare yourself for a magical experience as you soar over this pristine and unspoiled Hawaiin landscape on a helicopter tour!

Scenic Helicopter Tour - Maui Itinerary

It was one of the highlights of my trip, and I loved how it’ll give you a much better understanding of the sheer size of the island, all the different areas there are to explore, and a full appreciation for the rugged coastlines.

Several different companies offer scenic helicopter tours and lots of different routes. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip with Maverick Helicopters, and doing the Molokai Voyage tour!

I loved flying over TWO islands, and the waterfalls along the tall coastlines of Molokai were incredible to see in person! As well, you’ll get to fly over the resorts on the west coast of Maui, and fly across the channel which I really enjoyed.

Two Island Hawaii Helicopter Experience Over Maui and Molokai : “This Hawaiian helicopter tour lets you explore the beauty and scenery of two Hawaiian Islands on this multi-island expedition. Begin your adventure departing the Kahului Heliport on your way to the world’s largest sea cliffs, located on Molokai, also known as the Friendly Isle.

Molokai’s waterfalls, including Kahiwa Falls are the tallest among all the Hawaiian Islands . Get bird’s-eye views of the remote north shore, Halawa Valley and the vast Molokai fish ponds.  Fly over the Pailolo channel featuring some of the most scenic waters between the islands including Elephant Rock.

Over Maui, get intimate views of the western portion of the island including the famous lao Valley State Park, a vegetation-covered lava rainforest.”

Helicopter Flight - Maui Itinerary

Iao Valley State Park

Once you’ve landed back on the ground, it’s only a short drive from the airport to the Iao Valley State Park ! You will have just flown over this stunning green landscape, and now it’s your chance to walk (and swim) through it!

With a short scenic lookout trail, several swimming holes, and being surrounded by tropical gardens – it’s the perfect place to spend a couple of hours escaping from the Maui heat!

It’s also home to one of Maui’s most recognizable landmarks, the 1,200-foot Iao Needle. “This iconic green-mantled rock outcropping overlooks Iao stream and is an ideal attraction for easy hiking and sightseeing.”

After taking a dip in the streams, and learning all about the historical significance, head back to your resort for the rest of the day, as you’ll probably be ready for some rest if you’re experiencing any jet lag!

Iao Valley State Park Maui

Maui Itinerary Day 2: Haleakala National Park [Sunrise or Sunset]

While it may require a rather long drive to reach the summit, it’s absolutely worth it! The Haleakala National Park is home to Maui’s highest peak, and no visitor to Maui should leave without being mesmerized by the views from up there!

“This special place vibrates with stories of ancient and modern Hawaiian culture and protects the bond between the land and its people. The park also cares for endangered species, some of which exist nowhere else. Come visit this special place – renew your spirit amid stark volcanic landscapes and sub-tropical rain forest with an unforgettable hike through the backcountry”

Haleakala National Park - Maui Sunrise

One of the most popular tourist attractions on Maui island is watching the sunrise from Haleakala National Park, but if you decide to do that you’ll need to wake up and be ready to go by around 2-3 A.M!

It’s quite the experience, and comes highly recommended! There are plenty of companies that offer sunrise tours, but I’d just recommend making your own Haleakala Sunrise Reservation, and saving the money for other day tours on the island!

If you decide to sleep in every day of your vacation (which is perfectly acceptable, lol), make sure you still get up there for a visit.

You can take a read through this article the “ Top 10 Things to Do on Haleakala ” for some more information, but I’d definitely recommend taking a hike through the park!  You’ll be amazed at the views, but just bring plenty of SPF as you’ll be in lots of direct sunlight!

While you won’t need ALL day at the national park, I won’t include anything else as I’m sure the drive and hike will take lots of your energy!

Haleakala Crater

Haleakala Crater

Maui Itinerary Day 3: Pool Day & Kaanapali Resort

After two pretty eventful days so far in Maui, spend some time in “vacation mode” and soak up your resort or accommodation amenities!

I’d also recommend taking a drive over to Kaanapali Resort and taking a stroll through there! When I visited I really enjoyed my time down there, but I was also pretty happy that I wasn’t staying at one of the resorts there (as it’s quite busy)!

There are tons of amazing shops, restaurants, and beach bars though, and you also find plenty of beach chairs to rent (if you’re staying at an Airbnb that doesn’t have beach access)!

Just try and take it easy today and relax, because what’s next on the itinerary is going to be a long but amazing day!!

Maui Itinerary Day 4: The Road To Hana

“it’s not the destination, it’s the journey.”  ―  ralph waldo emerson,.

Road to Hana - Maui itinerary

The “ Road To Hana ” is a world-famous highway that is carved into the coastlines of Maui, and provides some of Hawaii’s most jaw-dropping oceanfront views! When it comes to scenic coastal road trips, it really doesn’t get much better than the Road to Hana, and it’s become one of the biggest tourist draws to this lush green Hawaiin island!

While the distance traveled on this legendary road is only 52 miles, don’t let that fool you ― this is an all-day adventure, and will require an early start! The journey can take anywhere between two to five hours one-way (depending on how many stops you make), and is filled with narrow one-lane bridges and hairpin turns!

Road To hana - Best Maui Itinerary

“The Hana Highway (HI-360) has 620 curves and 59 bridges. The road leads you through flourishing rainforests, flowing waterfalls, plunging pools, and dramatic seascapes. Please keep in mind that you’ll encounter challenging turns and narrow bridges along the way, so it’s important to exercise caution and take your time. There are plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the lovely views, so get an early start and take your time on your drive. While it’s all about the journey, once you reach the beautiful and quiet town of Hana, you’ll see why it’s worth the trip.”

Check out this article by Matador Network titled, “ The ultimate guide to the Road to Hana, Maui ” for some more information and how to plan for the adventure!

The Road to Hana is seriously a MUST-DO while you’re in Maui Hawaii, because you’ll love the journey to Hana, which is considered one of the last unspoiled Hawaiian frontiers!

Maui Itinerary Day 5: Molokini Crater Snorkeling Tour

While there are tons of places around Maui that are great for a quick snorkeling session, there’s no better snorkeling in the area than Molokini Crater! Located just a quick boat ride away in between the islands of Maui and Kahoʻolawe, the Molokini Crater is a crescent-shaped volcanic crater that has unbelievably crystal clear water and fantastic marine life!

If you’re a certified Scuba diver, I’d definitely recommend looking into booking a fun dive here as well!

“It’s world-famous due to the wall and drift dives available. The backside of Molokini drops nearly straight down to 360 feet. The inside reef of Molokini also offers great diving opportunities. We suggest only advanced divers dive the backside of  Molokini , where you’ll likely see many different types of shark, moray eels, many species of tropical fish, manta rays, dolphins, and vibrant reef. Within the crater, search for octopus, moray eels, sharks, and hundreds of exotic fish.”

Check out this Instagram video below to see what I mean about the water!  It’s truly spectacular and definitely worth the snorkeling day-trip!

View this post on Instagram The devil is in the details ? (swipe to see dem, and don’t forget to follow @shangerdanger for more epic underwater imagery) on this day we got to this popular dive site in the afternoon and had to wait for the tour boats to clear out so that we could tie off to a mooring ball. From above and below the blue of the water was the most amazing I had ever seen. I would guess the visibility was over 200ft, but what’s funny is that it’s almost always like that at Molokini Crater. It’s located far from the south coast of Maui and is a protected nature preserve. #hawaii #underwater #boomerang #freediving #molokinicrater #makena #kihei #maui #southshore A post shared by Shangerdanger (shane) (@shangerdanger) on Jul 20, 2019 at 10:07am PDT

Maui Itinerary Day 6: The Aquarium of Hawaii, Maui Brewing Company & Lahaina

Selected as one of the Top 10 Aquariums in the world, no visit would be complete without a visit to Maui Ocean Center!  Head over here in the morning after breakfast, and spend a few hours learning all about Hawaiin marine life! With over 60 different interactive exhibits, shows, naturalist presentations, and cultural activities – there really is a little something for everyone!  It’s open daily from 9 am – 5 pm.

Tickets can be purchased there, but you can save $5 per ADULT ticket if you book in advance online.

Maui Aqaurium - 7 Day Itinerary

Maui Brewing Co

After you’ve had your fix at the aquarium, make the quick 20-minute drive around Maalaea Bay and arrive at the Maui Brewing Co in Kihei for Lunch.  This is Hawaii’s Largest Craft Brewery, and has become a hotspot among tourists and locals!

There’s a full-service restaurant and tasting room where you can take a 45-minute guided  Brewery Tour  for $15, which I personally loved! You’ll get to learn all about the history of the company, sample lots of beer, and learn about the brewing process (and what makes MBC unique).

The burgers at the restaurant are delicious, but the main reason to come here would be to try out a beer flight or two (as the beer is incredible).

If you’re making decent time, you could also drive along the Kihei Road down towards The Shops at Wailea! It’s a nice cruise along the beach, and it’s the other main touristy area filled with vacation condos and luxury resorts.

Exploring & Sunset Dining in Lahaina

Once you’re done with your time in Kihei, make the short drive back to the west coast and stop in Lahaina! It’s my favorite major city on Maui, and a fantastic place to just walk around, watch surfers, enjoy a sunset, and have some dinner/ nightlife.

I’d strongly recommend enjoying a meal at the rooftop bar at  Fleetwoods on Front Street !  We had dinner there one night (which was incredible), and the vibe really was awesome up there. Beautiful ocean breeze, sounds of waves hitting the beach, and beautiful sunset views of Lanai in the distance!

“Owned by Mick Fleetwood of the popular band Fleetwood Mac, this Front Street staple offers some of the best views possible from its stunning rooftop deck. Not only did they win the 2014 Aipono Gold Award for Best Cocktails on Maui, but they won our vote as well! Grab an ocean-view seat on the roof for happy hour, daily from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and enjoy live entertainment while sipping a specialty cocktail. We recommend the Fleetwood’s Pimm’s Cup with muddled strawberries, mint, and cucumber, Pimm’s No. 1, Grand Marnier, Lemon, Orange Juice and Ginger Beer, or the Starshine with Ocean Vodka, Local Starfruit, Housemade Vanilla & Mint Simple Syrup, Fresno Chile and Li Hing Mui salted rim.” – Lahaina Own

Maui Itinerary Day 7: Relaxing Spa Day & Hawaiin Luau Dinner Show

So it’s the last day of the week your in Maui itinerary, and I personally think you can’t end your vacation without a bit of pampering! Whether you’re looking for just a basic 60-minute massage or a full-day spa package, check out this article for the Top Spas on Maui and find something you think sounds good to you.

During our stay at the Ritz Carlton, I thoroughly enjoyed their 80-minute “Man’s Massage”, and it really set the tone for the rest of the day!

Maui Itinerary

Hawaiin Luau Dinner Show

For your last night in Hawaii, I’d recommend soaking up the culture at an iconic “Hawaiin luau”.  There are tons of different options available, but I’d recommend this one:

Old Lahaina Luau Maui : “Soak up Hawaiian history and culture at the 3-hour Old Lahaina Luau in Maui. Enjoy hula dancing, an oceanfront setting, and fresh island fillets, as well as other traditional dishes. You’ll be greeted with a Hawaiian lei and tropical drink from the bar before settling in for a lively performance against the Maui sunset. Traditional Lahaina Luau on Maui Enjoy local cuisine, cultural dancing and island crafts Learn about the rich history of Maui Take in fabulous ocean views Watch traditional and contemporary hula performances!”

OR – if it’s not your first in Hawaii or you just aren’t interested in a Luau, you could always reserve a spot at the award-winning restaurant Banyan Tree , because they’ve got a fire show every night which was super fun to watch.

More Things to Do & Places to Visit on Maui

While I do think I outlined a pretty amazing Maui itinerary, there really is a lot more to explore on this island! Here are few more epic things you should get up to while on the island!

This is one of the last major towns located towards the beginning of the Road to Hana, and is definitely worth a visit!  It’s got some really great shopping, fun restaurants, a few lively bars, and a top-notch health food store! It’s got a great relaxing surfer vibe, and this is probably where I would lIve if I moved to Maui. I ended up eating at several of the shops in town, and everything was delicious, and this is the perfect place to stop for a classic Hawaiin shaved Ice!

Maui Itinerary - Paia Town

Waihee Ridge Trail

If you’re feeling extra adventurous and looking for a good hike, the Waihee Ridge Trail is particularly awesome!  It starts off with a pretty intense climb, but the views you’ll get of the Maui mountains, as well as the coastline, are well worth it.  I only hiked this for the first mile or so (and then had to circle back since I had forgotten to bring a water bottle and it was super hot), but will definitely be completing the circuit when I make it back to Maui!  You’ll definitely need your own car to get to the start of it though!

Waihee Ridge Trail - Maui Itinerary

Kapalua Coastal Trails

This flat and breezy 1.76-mile walk along the various beaches of Kapalua is an absolute must for people staying in the area! It’ll only take about 30+ minutes or so, but you’ll get some really stunning viewpoints, and might even be able to spot some turtles and dolphins out in the water!  The trail leads from the Ritz Carlton all the way to the scenic Kapalua Bay, a famous place for snorkeling with turtles, and also the location of  Merriman’s Maui – which regularly wins awards for having the best Mai Tai!  If you’re a big fan of hiking though, you could also check out the other hiking trails in Kapalua !  I’ve heard great things about the Mahana Ridge trail, but it just sounded a bit too intense for me on a hot day!

That would be a great way to add a bit of fun to your vacation! Also, I didn’t get up to too much nightlife, but I’d recommend you read up on this article The 10 Best Nightlife spots for Maui if you’re looking to drink and dance a bit more.

Also, I’d definitely recommend picking up a guide book before your trip! While I do hope I’ve helped you tremendously with your trip planning, having a guidebook while you’re in Hawaii can be a really great resource! Here are a couple solid options to pick up:

The Ultimate Maui Travel Guide [ 2024 ]

Planning a vacation to Maui, Hawaii and looking for the best Maui recommendations for where to stay, where to eat, what to see and what to do on the island? You came to the right place! I’ve been vacationing on Maui about once a year ever since I was a little girl, and it is one of my favorite destinations in the world – whether you’re traveling on a Maui honeymoon, a romantic getaway, a Hawaii babymoon , a family trip,  or a destination wedding .

best travel guide for maui

Maui is often thought of as the most luxurious, and resortey, of the Hawaiian islands . Resortey and luxe?? SIGN ME UP. As you guys could probably guess by now (especially if you follow me on instagram ) that means Maui is my favorite island to visit in Hawaii. The gorgeous coastline, dazzling beaches, waterfalls, volcanoes & rain forests make it one of the most naturally beautiful islands in the world. But it’s the five-star resorts, the world-class service, and the fresh, island food that keep us all coming back year after year. Here are all my go-to Maui recommendations to make the most of your vacation on the Valley Isle.

Where to Stay in Maui

Most of the luxury resorts on Maui are congregated among three areas – Wailea, Ka’anapali, and Kapalua.

Find a hotel in Maui:

Wailea is considered “South Maui” and is thought of as the dryest area on the island. It is serene, luxe, and beautiful. Kaanapali, on West Maui, also tends to be dry and is home to Lahaina (an adorable town full of shopping and restaurants) and Kaanapali (a resort-filled stretch of beach that is the most bustling, exciting area on the island). Kapalua, a bit further up from Kaanapali, has more of a Wailea feel, but since it is at the base of the mountains, it can be subject to wind and rain more so than other areas on the island. I generally recommend people to stay in either Kaanapali if they’re looking for lots of action, beautiful snorkeling, and lots to do or Wailea if they’re looking for more of a retreat, a quieter end to the island, and some of the best luxury resorts on the island.

best travel guide for maui

Wailea vs. Kaanapali

Kaanapali and Wailea are both resort areas in Maui that are home to beautiful resorts! I honestly like staying in both areas when I travel to Maui, and if you have a week or more in Maui, you should definitely consider doing both! The benefit to Wailea over Kaanapali is it is a bit closer to things like the Road to Hana, the Haleakala Volcano, and Paia/Mama’s Fish House. The benefit to Kaanapali is there are more resorts (so prices tend to be a bit less, and you can usually find deals) and it is closer to Lahaina – a happening town of cute restaurants and bars. There’s more to do around Kaanapali, whereas Wailea can sometimes seem like its own world (but there’s nothing wrong with that!).

$$$$$ The best luxury hotels in Wailea:

The Four Seasons Maui

The Four Seasons Maui is one of Hawaii’s most beautiful – and exclusive – resorts and is hands down my choice of where to stay for luxury in Maui. I love this hotel so much that it’s where i’m planning my wedding for next year! We couldn’t think of a more perfect place, and are so excited to have all of our loved ones there with us.

best travel guide for maui

Though it feels luxe at every corner (and is tranquil and exclusive) it’s not as quiet and still as many Four Seasons tend to be, but rather has an upbeat vacation vibe that attracts a crowd of young couples, groups of friends, babymooners , and families with small children. This resort caters to those wanting impeccable service, understated elegance, and delicious dining on the most beautiful stretch of Maui, and as such has long been a favorite Hawaiian getaway for celebrities, actors, singers and athletes. Almost every A-lister has stayed here.

Complimentary resort services outside many in-room amenities include poolside snacks, free Kona coffee each morning in the lobby and at the gym (their free coffee is SOOOO GOOD! Seriously puts any other coffee to shame) , an intro SCUBA clinic, outrigger canoeing (even for beginners!), paddle-boarding, a well-equipped fitness center with an ocean view (complete with Peloton bikes!), beautiful pool cabanas, and a complimentary resort car and driver to take you anywhere you want in Wailea (golfing, shopping, restaurants, etc). With all that taken care of (and NO resort fee – the only resort in Wailea not to have one!), you’ll be in vacation heaven.

Hotel Wailea, Relais & Chateau, Adults Only

Known for its world-class service and to-die-for restaurant, this boutique-feeling luxury hotel is nestled on a cliff overlooking Maui’s southern coastline on 15 beautifully-landscaped acres. Hotel Wailea has some of the best, most luxurious facilities and spacious suites you’ll find in Maui – and is perfect for Hawaii honeymooners since it’s adults-only. Each suite at Hotel Wailea features free WiFi and a private, furnished deck with a view of the ocean or garden.  The only downside is it’s not DIRECTLY on the beach (but you get those stunning views of the ocean from the resort, and they still have beach services with chairs and umbrellas).

The Grand Wailea , A Waldorf Astoria Resort

The Grand Wailea is a dreamy hotel option in Maui – especially ideal for families with children, but great for couples too! Neighbor to the Four Seasons Resort Maui, Grand Wailea is oceanfront on beautiful Wailea Beach. With 40 acres of property (yes, that’s why they call it ‘Grand’) and 780 guest rooms (!!). The Grand Wailea is one of the biggest, most well-known luxury resorts in Maui, featuring a very-grand pool area that is 2,000-feet-long, with nine (that’s right, NINE!!!) pools, on six different levels, connected by waterslides (yup… kid HEAVEN!).  There’s even the world’s only WATER elevator. Your kids will be in their happy place.

Fairmont Kea Lani

The Fairmont Kea Lani is one of the best Maui resorts, and one of my personal favorites. It has 450 spacious suites on 22 beachfront acres of property that boasts three pools, four restaurants, a beautiful spa, and some world-class golf. It is one of the few Maui resorts that beautifully balances the art of entertaining families and couples alike, and you’ll see plenty of both at the resort. The Fairmont’s oceanfront villas and suites are some of the largest rooms in Maui, so if you’re coming with a group or looking for a great luxury villa option – these are some of the very best on the island.

Wailea Beach Resort – Marriott Maui

With private lanais, a drop-dead-gorgeous infinity pool, and a sleek contemporary feel, the Wailea Beach Resort is one of my favorite picks for hotels in Maui. The rates tend to be decent for Wailea and it’s one of the most beautiful (and new!) properties – in a great location. During the day, you can soak up the sun in their beautiful newly-renovated Makani oceanfront pools which feature cabanas and fire pits. You’ll enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner, and sunset mai tais at the Marriott’s new Kapa restaurant and bar ( one of the best happy hour spots in Maui! ) . They also have the Nalu Adventure Pool for families (with the longest resort waterslide in Hawaii).

Where to eat in Maui:

On your way to or from the airport: haleakala highway food trucks.

I don’t care when your flight gets in to Maui, your first stop should  always be to head to the food truck lot at 591 Haleakala Highway.

It’s only about 5 minutes from the airport, and has DELICIOUS food trucks – my favorites being “ Like Poke? ” for incredible fresh Hawaiian poke bowls (and poke nachos, yum!) and Mo’Ono Hawaii for acai bowls! There are also other cuisines to choose from as well. It’s always a great first (or last) stop in Maui to or from the airport. And you can get some yummy food at non-resort prices before you get into the resort.

The Best Restaurants on Maui:

Mama’s fish house   .

About 35 mins from Wailea or 45-55 from Kaanapali, Mama’s is the most popular , and awarded, restaurant on Maui – and with good reason. I can say hands down this restaurant is my favorite dinner spot in the world . Secluded on Maui’s North Shore, Mama’s is a bucket list restaurant. It’s upscale, beachfront, and features contemporary Polynesian and Hawaiian food .   The menu changes daily, but it’s sure to be the best fish you can get anywhere in the islands. The menu even tells you the name of the fisherman who caught your fish that day! So awesome. Take one sip of Mama’s famous Mai Tai, watch the sun set over the Pacific, feel your fresh caught mahi-mahi melt in your mouth and boom. Welcome to paradise.

Merriman’s – Kapalua

Merriman’s is always a must-stop in Maui if you’re staying near Kapalua. This restaurant is the famous creation of Chef Peter Merriman, who is very famous in Maui. Merriman’s has three flagship restaurants serving locally-sourced, farm to table fare on the Big Island, Maui, and Kauai. Chef Merriman also has two fast-casual restaurants: Monkeypod Kitchen on Maui and Oahu, and Moku Kitchen on Oahu.

Where to eat in Wailea:

Ferraro’s italian – four seasons.

Ferraro’s is a super cute outdoor patio restaurant at the FS Maui. It has some of the best Italian on the island, and a great pizza menu available all day. They also have a fab wine list. Order the Four Season’s brand chardonnay or cabernet sauv Iconoclast – you can only get it at their resorts and it’s sooo good.

Even if you’re staying at the resort, make sure you make a reservation to get a good table.

With over 90% of the island’s fresh produce, meat and seafood, Executive Chef Pang gives these authentic recipes a farm-fresh, contemporary twist.

Duo – Four Seasons Maui

Duo has some of the best food on the island – I love it the most for their breakfast buffet – which is easily one of the best I’ve ever had. Order the chocolate chip pancakes and thank me later.

The Shops at Wailea

Once you’re in the resort zone of Maui, a short walk from all the resorts in Wailea is a shopping center called the Shops at Wailea – which has a ton of options to choose from for some great off-resort meals.

Cheeseburger Grille & Taproom

Cheeseburger is awesome for a casual burger night (I love the one with a grilled pineapple!), and also has a $7.99 breakfast deal – with $6 mimosas and bloody mary’s) each day.

Island Gourmet

A great stop for salads, sandwiches, breakfast burritos and prepared foods to go. Open from 6:30am. Breakfast available all day.

Honolulu Coffee

Great coffeeshop to get your morning buzz on. Open from 6:30am. On the upper level of the Shops at Wailea.

Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, an anniversary, or just need an excuse to eat some amazing food and pop some champagne over the Hawaiian coast, Merriman’s is your spot. The sunset view is impossible to beat and the food is fantastic. A little pricey, but great for a special occasion. My favorite pupu? The warm crusted goat cheese with strawberries salad. Ah-mazing. You also can’t go wrong with a little tasting of the kalua pig and maui sweet onion quesadilla- yum. For your entree, you’ll have your choice of fresh seafood or impeccable meats, and don’t forget to save room for their delicious desserts.

Known to the locals as “Big Beach”, Makena Beach is the largest continuous stretch of beach on the island at over a mile long and over 100 feet wide. It’s gorgeous – and definitely worth a visit!

Wailea Beach

Located on the south coast of Maui, Wailea Beach is a beautiful golden sand beach that is home to several of the high-end resorts I recommended in this guide – including the Four Seasons and Grand Wailea. Expect to find crystal clear waters and swanky cocktail bars that serve refreshing drinks overlooking the ocean.

Maui must-do’s

The best things to do while visiting maui, the road to hana .

Famed as one of the most beautiful drives in the world, the Road to Hana is on most travelers’ bucket lists. Once you get to Hana, you’ll be greeted with lush rainforest, dramatic and rugged ocean vistas, countless waterfalls and pools. The only downside? It takes a 52-mile highway stretch with winding and narrow one-lane roads, and 600 turns to get there. Definitely not an activity for those who get carsick!

Here’s the tour I would recommend:

What is the best season to visit Maui?

On Maui, you get pretty amazing, sunny, warm weather year-round. Locals will tell you the best times to visit are April and May, or October and November since these are the shoulder seasons, and draw fewer crowds, but any time throughout the year is really wonderful. It’s a tropical island – and you always risk a little rain, but it’s a much less rainy island than Kauai . November through March is technically rainy season in Maui, though you don’t get much rain on the Wailea side of Maui .

When can you see whales on Maui?

Whale season in Maui runs from December 15th-May 15th! But even outside these times you may get lucky – there are spottings year round! So bring your binoculars  – and consider doing a whale-watching tour if you’re visiting January-April.

Enjoy Maui! xx

Haleakala National Park Haleakala National Park

U.S. News Insider Tip:  If you're looking for a unique adventure, consider camping inside the crater. There are three wilderness cabins accessible via a minimum 3.7-mile hike from the summit. Advanced reservations are required, and fill up quickly. –  Sharael Kolberg

As a top attraction on Maui, Haleakala National Park is home to a dormant volcano crater with its desert-like landscape, sacred sites and a waterfall-laden tropical oasis near the coastline. Its name means "house of sun" and the entire park occupies 30,000 acres of land on Maui, though most visitors focus on a few specific areas of the park. Of course, there's the volcano: Haleakala's summit stands more than 10,000 feet above sea level (in fact, you can see three different islands from its peak on a clear day). For a once-in-lifetime experience plan your visit to the summit to see the sunrise (keep in mind visitors have to make reservations online in advance and a small fee is required). A winding, sometimes steep road (Route 378) takes visitors to the top. At 10,000 feet the air is thin and chilly, according to park rangers, so layers are advised.

Road to Hana Road to Hana free

U.S. News Insider Tip:  If you're driving yourself, there are several downloadable audio guides, such as those offered by Shaka Guide, that will point out sights to see and places to stop along the way. – Sharael Kolberg

Topping many Maui visitor's to-do list is driving the Road to Hana. Sounding like a mythical journey, Hana is an actual town on the scenic highway (Highway 360). Traveling along Maui's beautiful coastline, travelers are met with a road that includes about 600 curves, more than 50 bridges and 60 cascading waterfalls that line the island's lush eastern shore. The Road to Hana might seem short at 52 miles, but the journey will most likely take all day given the number of scenic lookouts and other places to stop. If you'd rather let someone else do the driving, there are several tour companies that offer tours in luxury vans, including Valley Isle Excursions and Temptation Tours . Though pricier than driving yourself, taking a tour allows you to focus on the incredible scenery while someone else navigates the winding curves. Plus, most tours are guided.

Ka'anapali Beach Ka'anapali Beach free

U.S. News Insider Tip:  Snorkeling around Black Rock is some of the best on the island. On the other end of the beach, if you're staying at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa , ask about the hidden cave in the pool. –  Sharael Kolberg

As one of Maui's most popular strips of white sand, Ka'anapali Beach stretches across 3 miles of the island's northwest coast, offering plenty of space to surf and sunbathe. The coveted sand is just one of this beach's many highlights: Ka'anapali was Hawaii's first planned resort area, and today it features several notable hotels and restaurants, two golf courses and the lively Whalers Village, an open-air shopping center. Another highlight of a visit to Ka'anapali Beach is the daily sunset cliff dive at Pu'u Keka'a (Black Rock), which pays tribute to King Kahekili, Maui's last independent king who ruled in the 18th century. Additionally, a few whale watching  and snorkeling  excursions depart from this area and some of the best zip lines on Maui are nearby.

Maui Snorkeling Tours Maui Snorkeling Tours

It can be easy to become mesmerized by Maui's multicolored beaches, verdant hiking trails and breathtaking sunsets, but don't forget about the world that lives beneath the surrounding Pacific Ocean floor. Located off the western shore of Maui, the top locations for snorkeling are close to beaches, or visitors can take a snorkeling tour. In fact, many of the island's top hotels will offer guests complimentary use of snorkeling equipment; some, such as The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua , will even arrange boat tours for their guests. With equipment in hand, visitors can explore well-known spots, such as Ka'anapali Beach , Kapalua Bay and Honolua Bay, from the shore. Many of the top tours visit crescent-shaped Molokini , which is located off Maui's southwestern coast and is home to 250 species of fish. Lana'i is another top snorkeling tour destination as it's home to the Hulopo'e Marine Preserve.

According to travelers, setting aside a morning or afternoon to explore Maui's underwater creatures is an unforgettable experience. And most enjoyed their day on the water, including the boat ride to the snorkeling spots, saying the scenery added to their experience. Most tour operators offered efficient services and the amenities onboard were well received.

Maui Helicopter Tours Maui Helicopter Tours

After seeing Maui through the eyes of a fish on a snorkeling tour , many consider getting a bird's perspective on a helicopter tour. While flying over destinations like Haleakala National Park , along the Road to Hana or a complete circumnavigational tour of Maui, passengers will see all the top sights in about an hour (and without the land-based traffic). No matter which route you choose, you'll be rewarded with stunning vistas of Maui's waterfalls, craters, cliffs and valleys.

Recent travelers describe this experience as a "splurge" (most tour prices start at around $300 per person), though they also concede that seeing Maui from the air is an incredible sight. Most described the experience as exciting and the pilots as accommodating and professional. Even first-time helicopter passengers felt safe and enjoyed their excursion.

'Ohe'o Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools) 'Ohe'o Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools)

U.S. News Insider Tip:  Tent camping is available at Kipahulu campground, located on the bluffs overlooking the ocean and a short walk to 'Ohe'o Gulch. –  Sharael Kolberg

Within the Kipahulu District of the Haleakala National Park , hikers will find the Seven Sacred Pools, or the Pools of 'Ohe'o in 'Ohe'o Gulch. Though often mislabeled, the area boasts more than seven pools; each is fed by a small waterfall flowing down the gulch. To reach the area, visitors need to take a half-mile hike on the Kuloa Point Trail from the visitor center. Hikers will enjoy sightings of the pools, along with ocean views and archeological sites. Keep in mind that you'll only be able to view the pools from the trail; swimming in the pools is not allowed.

'Iao Valley State Monument 'Iao Valley State Monument

Like Haleakala National Park , 'Iao Valley State Park offers visitors the chance to admire something other than the beach. This 4,000-acre, 10-mile-long park in Central Maui boasts a verdant landscape and striking rock features – the most famous of which is the 'Iao Needle. Rising roughly 1,200 feet into the air, the 'Iao Needle was formed by erosion and is now dressed in the island's tropical foliage. The most popular hiking trail is the 0.6-mile 'Iao Needle Lookout Trail and Ethnobotanical Loop, a paved walkway that leads straight to the iconic rock formation and through a botanical garden.

In addition to the stunning landscape, 'Iao Valley visitors will learn about the park's legendary history. It was here that Maui's tribal army lost to the forces of King Kamehameha I during the Battle of Kepaniwai in 1790. It was the victory at this battle that helped pave the way for King Kamehameha to eventually unite the entire Hawaiian archipelago under his rule.

Napili Bay Beach Napili Bay Beach free

U.S. News Insider Tip:  It's worth waiting in line at The Gazebo restaurant (which sits within walking distance of the beach) for the best macadamia nut pancakes, coconut syrup and spectacular ocean views. –  Sharael Kolberg

Though not nearly as expansive as Wailea or Ka'anapali , crescent-shaped Napili Bay Beach is particularly popular with families. Napili's waters are much calmer than those at other Maui beaches, so kids and adults alike can take to the seas for swimming, paddleboarding and boogie boarding. Plus, Napili Bay Beach provides a quiet, laid-back atmosphere that sunbathers love with views of Molokai and Lana'i .

Wailea Beach Wailea Beach free

You visit Ho'okipa to see Maui's daredevils hang 10, and you head to Kaihalulu or Wai'anapanapa for multicolored sands. So, which beach do you go to just to swim and relax? This crescent-shaped beach caters to the sun-seeking guests from several of the nearby luxury resorts , including the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea . Wailea feels much less rugged than some of Maui's other beaches: The sand is lined by palm trees and visitors will find a paved walkway connecting the shoreline to the area's hotels, shops and restaurants. What's more, visitors to this beach will have access to water sports equipment rentals and an umbrella service. And because the waters here are relatively calm, Wailea Beach is great for those looking to swim or snorkel . During the winter, whales can be spotted.

Recent visitors said the surrounding resorts do a great job keeping the Wailea Beach clean. Other visitors appreciated the services offered by the resorts like rentals and restaurant access. Families enjoyed the calm waters of the area that allowed for swimming and snorkeling.

Makena Beach State Park Makena Beach State Park

Located about 5 miles south of Wailea, Makena Beach State Park is billed as "one of the largest, undeveloped beaches" on the island by Hawaii's tourism board. This beach is perfect for travelers in search of the more untouched shorelines of Maui. Upon arriving, beachgoers will see white sand and not much else, with a notable absence of hotels, shops and restaurants nearby.

Within its 165 acres, Makena Beach State Park offers two beaches along with a dormant cinder cone known as Pu'u Olai. Big Beach (or Oneloa Beach) stretches for 1.5 miles and is 100 feet wide. Aptly named Little Beach features 660 feet of sand. Though nudity is prohibited on state park beaches, the rules tend to be lax at Little Beach, so you may see topless sunbathers. Little Beach also doesn't offer the lifeguards or amenities that Big Beach does. To travel from one beach to the other, beachgoers traverse a small trail located on the volcanic land mass that separates the shorelines from each other; it takes about five minutes, according to recent visitors. Aside from their size, both beaches are backed by lush tropical vegetation and feature views of Molokini and Kaho'olawe.

Maui Golf Courses Maui Golf Courses

Travelers who prefer greens to beaches will find plenty of places to put their clubs to good use. Maui is home to 14 highly acclaimed golf courses, some of them conceived by such pro designers as Arnold Palmer and Ben Crenshaw. Some of the more popular courses include the Gold, Emerald and Old Blue courses at Wailea Golf Club and the Bay and Plantation courses at Kapalua Resort. Architecture buffs might want to the check out the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed clubhouse at King Kamehameha Golf Club. No matter the course, golfers will find fantastic views of Maui's coastline or volcanic formations.

Kapalua's Plantation Course is a favorite among reviewers for its spectacular setting and excellent amenities, though serious golfers complain that it's slow to play. Other infrequent golfers complained of the wind and the price tag. The top-ranked Wailea Golf Club earned more consistently high marks, with golfers enjoying everything from rented clubs to the golf carts to the pros.

Wai'anapanapa State Park Wai'anapanapa State Park

In Hawaiian, "Wai'anapanapa" means "glistening waters." But it's not the ocean that draws travelers to Wai'anapanapa State Park – it's the jet black sands . The shoreline here is composed of volcanic sediment, which acts as a stark contrast to the bright blue waves and verdant jungle.

For those with reservations, this is a highlight near the end of the Road to Hana , but there's more to see than the beach. Those who hike along the park's primary trail (which traces the coast past the black sand beach) will discover Wai'anapanapa's two freshwater caves. According to Hawaiian legend, these caves were the site of the grisly murder of princess Popo'alaea who, along with her attendant, was murdered by her cruel husband, Chief Ka'akea. Today, visitors can enter the caves and even swim in the pools. Those who prefer to stay dry can visit the wealth of sites that line the coastal hiking trail, including a religious temple, natural blow holes, sea stacks and more.

Maui Ocean Center Maui Ocean Center

For visitors in love with the ocean, or those dealt a rainy day on the island, consider spending some time at the Maui Ocean Center. This facility helps visitors learn about Hawaii's underwater ecosystems and offers a variety of ways to get up close and personal with the island's marine life. The 750,000-gallon Open Ocean exhibit houses hundreds of fish, rays and sharks, and features a 53-foot-long acrylic tunnel that allows you to observe the animals swimming overhead. Visitors can learn about the popular green sea turtles at the Turtle Lagoon for an above and below water look. Meanwhile, the Humpbacks of Hawai'i Exhibit and Sphere, which debuted in 2019, penetrates the deep ocean and allows visitors to virtually experience the underwater world of humpback whales with a 3D showing every half-hour. For those visitors wanting to get closer to the marine life, the Maui Ocean Center offers a cage-free shark dive in its Open Ocean exhibit, which is home to more than 20 sharks (note that a SCUBA certification is required and additional fees starting at $350 per person apply).

Recent visitors described the aquarium as small, but charming. Several mentioned it was a great indoor activity. Many travelers were especially impressed with the Open Ocean tunnel and the 3D humpback whale virtual experience. And for reviewers who had snorkeled around the island, the aquarium provided a more in-depth education into the animals they had spotted underneath the water's surface. However, more than a few reviewers warned of high prices for the on-site restaurant and cafe and suggest eating elsewhere.

Kapalua Coastal Trail Kapalua Coastal Trail free

Those who want to explore Maui by foot, but don't want to tackle the difficult hiking trails of Haleakala National Park will love the Kapalua Coastal Trail. This trail encompasses the larger Kapalua resort community, which includes Montage Kapalua Bay and The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua , both of which are some of the best hotels in Hawaii . The 1.76-mile one-way trail is mostly paved and almost completely flat, snaking along Maui's northwestern coast. Along the way, visitors will get an eyeful of the glistening waters of the Pacific. Walkable in either direction, entry points are found at Kapalua Bay, Namalu Bay, Oneloa Bay and Honokahua Bay, the latter of which contains D.T. Fleming Beach Park. For those interested in going farther, hikers can continue following the trail to the more strenuous 20-mile Mahana Ridge Trail, which detours inland and features spectacular views of neighboring Molokai from its ridge.

Recent visitors loved the Kapalua Coastal Trail for its scenery and easy terrain (parents say the path is very kid-friendly). In addition to the beautiful ocean views, travelers also enjoyed exploring the rock formations that live in between the bays. For visitors hiking during whale watching season (December to March), they may be able to spot whales from the shore. Visitors also noted that because of this trail's popularity, it's best to start your walk early, especially since the parking lots are small. Others advised planning a visit at sunset. And while the trail is largely flat and mostly paved, some travelers said sturdy shoes are beneficial for the parts that aren't.

Turtle Town Turtle Town

For snorkelers who don't want to stray too far from Maui, Turtle Town is a great spot. You'll find this area near Maluaka Beach, which sits between Nahuna Point and Black Sand Beach in southwestern Maui. The area earned its name from the large population of Hawaiian green sea turtles that call it home. This reef area is protected from the island's trade winds by Haleakala, making for relatively calm waters. Turtle Town is a popular add-on destination to many Molokini Crater snorkeling and diving excursions, but it's also known as an ideal sea kayaking spot.

According to recent visitors who opted for kayak and snorkel tours, they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Many commented that they saw and swam with the green sea turtles and felt confident with their guides.

Pipiwai Trail Pipiwai Trail

One of Maui's most popular hiking trails is a treasure trove of natural wonders. Located along the Road to Hana , the Pipiwai Trail is part of the exceptionally scenic Kipahulu District in Haleakala National Park . Along the approximately 4-mile round-trip trail, hikers pass over footbridges and across boardwalks through lush tropical vegetation, a bamboo forest and past two waterfalls, including Makahiku Falls, 400-foot Waimoku Falls and 'Ohe'o Stream Gulch , also known as the "Seven Scared Pools." The Pipiwai Trail is considered moderately difficult, features an 800-foot elevation gain and can take up to three hours to complete.

Recent travelers described the trail as beautiful. Many loved the waterfalls, but visitors were also keen to point out the tranquility of the bamboo forest. Reviewers warned that while the scenery was outstanding, the hike was not easy. A few travelers said they were warned by National Park Service rangers that the NPS locks the parking gate at the end of the day, regardless if cars are still inside. Reviewers also recommend wearing sturdy shoes as parts of the trail can get slippery depending on how much it has rained.

Kama'ole Beach Parks Kama'ole Beach Parks free

Kama'ole Beach Parks are a series of three beaches that offer a great option for vacationing families thanks to their consistently calm waters and plentiful amenities – two things that aren't always guaranteed at other Maui beaches. The first two beaches (known as Kama'ole 1 and Kama'ole 2) offer the largest beach areas, and are considered to be some of the best beaches in Maui for swimming. The third (Kama'ole 3) is the smallest beach and features regular shore breaks, perfect for bodyboarding. While that may not be suitable for the little ones, the third beach boasts a large grassy park that's perfect for a picnic. Other amenities in this area include restrooms, showers, lifeguards, parking, picnic tables, volleyball courts, an accessible sand chair and playgrounds.

Recent visitors appreciated all the available amenities, as well as the safe swimming conditions. Travelers enjoyed all the activities available here, from taking a stroll along the water to snorkeling. Others reported being able to spot whales off the coast, along with sea turtles. A handful of travelers were delighted that, despite these beaches' popularity, they weren't overcrowded. Another visitor commented the parking was plentiful on the street.

Ho'okipa Beach Park Ho'okipa Beach Park free

The wintertime waves at Ho'okipa Beach are so white and frothy that hardcore surfers and windsurfers can't stay away (waves can reach as high as 30 feet). The water is definitely too rough for swimming, but visitors flock here to see the locals surf. Those on the Road to Hana can stop at Mile 9 to take in the action at this stretch coastline near Pa'ia in Upcountry Maui. For those who consider themselves professional surfers, it's best to have a local guide.

Recent travelers advised it was worth a stop even if you're not one for water sports, saying that the photo opportunities alone are worth it. What's more, the beach is also home to sea turtles, who come ashore and blend in with the lava rocks. Others commented that swimming wasn't suggested, though wading is fun, especially near the tidepools. Travelers suggested buying some food from nearby eateries and parking yourself at one of these benches to watch the action.

Molokini Crater Molokini Crater

U.S. News Insider Tip:  The boat ride back from Molokini tends to get very windy and bumpy, which might not be suitable for those prone to seasickness. If you can't handle the boat trip, you'll find there are plenty of amazing snorkeling options closer to shore. –  Sharael Kolberg

Situated about 3 miles off of Maui's southwestern coast, Molokini is a tiny island known as one of the top snorkeling and diving spots in the Hawaiian Islands. A crescent-shaped volcano crater that is partially submerged, Molokini doesn't feature sandbars, meaning the water clarity is superior to some of the other snorkeling spots around the island. The crater is home to 250 varieties of tropical fish, along with 38 types of hard coral. Because it's protected by the Molokini Shoal Marine Life Conservation District, the island is only accessible by boat on a snorkeling tour . On a tour, visitors can explore the underwater area by snorkel, SCUBA and even SNUBA (a hybrid between snorkeling and SCUBA that doesn't require certification). Most tours pair a visit to Molokini with a stop at Turtle Town , another coral reef that's best known for its population of turtles.

Old Lahaina Lu'au Old Lahaina Lu'au

The Old Lahaina Lu'au is one of the most popular things to do for first-time Maui visitors. Guests are greeted with a fresh orchid lei, then escorted to private tables, either low mat style seating or standard. The musicians at Old Lahaina Lu'au serenade their guests while the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean. While diners admire the performers' hula skills, servers share Hawaiian specialties, such as pua'a kalua  (pork roasted in an underground oven), fresh ahi poke (raw yellowfin tuna with green and Maui onions) and poi (mashed taro plant). The drinks are free-flowing at the Old Lahaina Lu'au for those 21 and older, and the meal is topped off with a selection of desserts featuring mango and coconut. Aside from the food and drinks, the Old Lahaina Lu'au is also a great place to learn about the culture of Hawaii. Stories about Hawiian legends, gods and royalty are told through dance and chants.

Though some reviewers described the experience as overpriced, others praised the attentive service, plentiful food and the talented performers. Reviewers also said this a valuable educational experience that helps visitors understand Hawaiian culture.

Garden of Eden Arboretum & Botanical Garden Garden of Eden Arboretum & Botanical Garden

While on the long and winding Road to Hana , consider stopping for a break at the Garden of Eden Arboretum & Botanical Garden, home to 26 acres of trails. Located near mile marker 10.5, this tropical oasis features several picturesque overlooks, a waterfall, a banana patch, a duck pond, expansive ocean views and an art gallery. Along the paths, you'll encounter exotic plants and trees, including Hawaii native and indigenous species. "Jurassic Park" fans may recognize the garden from the opening scene of the film.

Previous visitors praised the gardens as a scenic place to take photos. Reviewers also said it's a wonderful place to stop for a picnic lunch and reported spending about an hour here. Others remarked on the colorful peacocks that roam the property. Some felt the entrance fee was too steep, given that you can enjoy the same views along the Road to Hana for free.

Maui Pineapple Tour Maui Pineapple Tour

Fresh pineapple is so sweet, you could eat it for dessert. At the Maui Gold Pineapple Farm, visitors learn how pineapples grow (in the ground, not on palm trees, as some tourists think) and how they're harvested. Along the approximately 1 1/2-hour tour, you'll travel via an air-conditioned bus into the fields. You'll also get a chance to get off the bus for a look at the packing plant. The best part is that you get to take a fresh pineapple home with you.

Tourgoers praised the informative and entertaining guides and the tasty pineapple samples. The tour is an especially fun outing for kids, according to reviewers.

O'o Farm O'o Farm

More than 20 years ago, a pair of surf buddies decided to branch into farming. They bought a parcel of land with some fruit trees and coffee plants and it expanded from there. Now the 8.5-acre O'o Farm provides produce to several farm-to-table restaurants in the area. Visitors interested in agritourism, coffee enthusiasts or those wanting to understand more about Maui, can arrange a tour of the farm.

The first tour of the day starts with a cup of locally grown and roasted coffee, followed by a tour of the growing operations that focuses on the bean-to-cup coffee process. Following the morning tour, the lunch tour walks the growing fields to learn about the unique climate of the Upcountry region of Maui. Visitors will experience bicoastal views on a clear day from the farm's elevation, about 3,500 feet above sea level. They will see a variety of vegetables, leafy greens, herbs, as well as some fruit, coffee and even edible flowers. Menu items are seasonal, though breakfast can include dishes like a farm egg frittata flavored with local produce along with coffee cherry flavored honey buns. For lunch, the farm offers a fresh catch of the day with Maui onions, along with chicken dressed with a coffee and allspice rub.

Hana Lava Tube (Ka'eleku Caverns) Hana Lava Tube (Ka'eleku Caverns)

For a unique adventure along the Road to Hana , stop for a self-guided tour of the Hana Lava Tube, which can be found near mile marker 31. It takes no more than 40 minutes to explore about 1/3-mile of the accessible underground landscape with stalagmites and stalactites. The cave was supposedly formed about 960 years ago, from hot lava that cooled to form a top layer, and then once the lava stopped flowing it created a tube. Don't worry, there are no bats or mosquitos.

Many past visitors raved about this one-of-a-kind experience, saying that the stairs and uneven ground were relatively easy to navigate.

Nakalele Blowhole Nakalele Blowhole free

For visitors looking for the perfect photo of a whitecapped ocean lapping over the rocky shoreline while a geyser of misty water pops in the foreground, northwestern Maui's Nakalele Blowhole is the destination. The blowhole, which is a natural geyser formed from an underwater lava tube, can spray water up to 100 feet in the air, depending on the strength of the wind and surf.

Recent visitors admitted the blowhole is located a bit off the beaten path, though most said it was worth the effort to get to the tip of Maui. More than one reviewer said the scenery was dramatic and beautiful. Most enjoyed climbing around the rock formations watching for the blast of seawater. One recent visitor urged caution when parking after their rental was broken into. Several others reminded visitors to stay mindful of the ocean and to wear appropriate hiking footwear as the path is not smooth and requires walking over uneven rocks.

13 Best Things to Do in Maui

By Todd Plummer

United States Hawaii Maui Beach Makena Cove

From the summit of Haleakala to beaches at sea level, the island of Maui is filled with a rich variety of activities for travelers of all ages and interests. Whether you’re more inclined to just hop in a car and go, or you prefer a more relaxing afternoon of golf, the “Valley Isle” has so much to offer beyond its beaches (but don’t get us wrong—there are plenty of fabulous beaches , as well). From a farm-to-table experience you won’t soon forget, to a quaint little museum that provides a deeper dive into the island’s history, here are just a few of the best ways to spend time on your next trip to Maui.

Click the link to read our complete Maui guide .

Editor's note: Given the changing nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, the hours and accessibility of many activities are fluid and subject to change. We advise you to contact businesses directly for updated safety guidelines and hours of operation before visiting.

Road to Hana Hawaii Maui Attractions Road to Hana

Road to Hana Arrow

The curvaceous Road to Hana, which hugs Maui's northeastern shore around Haleakalā National Park , is one of the island's most memorable experiences, one that will make the hassle of renting a car worth it. The 52-mile road harks back to a Hawaii before shopping malls and crowds, with 59 bridges to cross—46 of which have only one lane. The trip can easily take a full day, two if you stay overnight. It's a feast for the senses as well, with plenty to see as you stop along the way. Whatever you do, be sure to visit one of the many roadside stands that sell fresh fruit, smoothies, hand-carved Koa wood mementos, and—best of all—warm banana bread.

United States Hawaii Maui Park Haleakalā National Park

Haleakalā National Park Arrow

The highest point on Maui is also one of its most visited: Haleakalā Crater provides epic, sweeping views of the island from an elevation of just over 10,000 feet. The visitor center is a great place to start, whether you're driving up in a rental car, opting for a sunrise van tour, or getting a little more adventurous with a backpacking trip on the famous Sliding Sands Trail . Come prepared with an extra layer—weather at this elevation can change drastically. At sunrise in the middle of summer, the temperature at the summit is likely to hover around 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

United States Hawaii Maui Restaurant Luau Feast at Lele

Feast at Lele Arrow

Don't come to the Feast at Lele expecting plastic leis, screaming children, and a sad buffet line; rather, this is a quintessential Maui luau without the cheesiness. The five-course dinner (served at private tables—a rarity on the luau scene) pairs live performances with cuisine from four different Pacific island regions: first Hawaii, then Aotearoa (New Zealand), Tahiti , and Samoa. Then comes dessert. The food is great. Standouts include a five-hour braised beef with kiwi jus from New Zealand. Come hungry—the portions are large and you won't want to miss out on the final note: a vanilla-coconut-lime mousse cake with caramelized pineapple.

United States Hawaii Maui Park Kula Botanical Garden

Kula Botanical Garden Arrow

What began in 1977 as a native plant reserve has transformed into Kula Botanical Garden, one of upcountry Maui's most beloved attractions, visited by thousands every year. Thanks to its location on the slopes of Haleakalā , the rich volcanic soil provides fertile ground for a great variety of plants, each labeled and many native to Maui. Admission is only $10 for adults—a fair price to pay to view more than 2,000 plants.

United States Hawaii Maui Beach Makena Cove

Makena Cove Arrow

Tucked between a few houses and behind a stone wall, the oasis of Makena Cove has a real feeling of discovery to it. Although most visitors are familiar with Makena Beach just to the north, very few take the extra steps to this gorgeous outcrop where volcanic rock meets the sea in spectacular fashion. The waves are dramatic, the crowds are nonexistent, and the sense of adventure is real. Come for a sunset mid-week and you're likely to have the place pretty much to yourself.

Default

O'o Farm: Gourmet Lunch & Farm Tour Arrow

Enrich your Maui trip by spending a couple hours at the upcountry O'o Farm, a resplendent eight-acre plot that offers two tours that take you through different areas of the farm itself, which uses all-natural methods and a unique no-till approach to get the most out of these rich volcanic soils. The breakfast coffee tour begins with a steaming French press of estate-grown Maui coffee beans, followed by a tour of the grounds and a memorable breakfast, while the lunch tour begins with a walk through the rows of vegetables and finishes with a scrumptious lunch. This farm supplies a few restaurants down in Lahaina, including Pacific'O, Feast at Lele , and Aina Gourmet Market, making it particularly interesting. This tour is a must for any food-lover in Maui. You can also buy bags of coffee by the pound to bring home.

Pipiwai Trail Arrow

It's about the journey, not the destination, right? On the Pipiwai Trail, it's about both. The remote trail is about 12 miles past Hana town on the Road To Hana . There are bamboo forests, a well-maintained trail, and not one, but two waterfalls. And at just about four miles roundtrip, it's a doable hike for people of all ages. As part of the Kīpahulu District inside Haleakalā National Park , you can expect a clean trail, beautifully maintained bridges, boardwalks, and rock steps. Make sure to stop for a breather in the bamboo forests—the sounds of bamboo trees clicking against each other in the wind is the kind of chilling nature moment people seek when they come to Maui. About three-fourths of the way through, you'll encounter the 185-foot Makahiku Falls which is, crazily, small potatoes compared to the 400-foot Waimoku Falls where the trail concludes.

United States Hawaii Maui Food Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice

Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice Arrow

Don't mistake proper Hawaiian shave ice with the chunky, frigid stuff you'd find at a carnival or stadium back home. Ululani's, an institution, makes its signature treat with purified water, cane sugar, purées made in-house with local fruit, and, of course, love. There are plenty of combinations to choose from, but take a hint from the name of the classic No Ka Oi ("the Best"), a zingy mix of mango, coconut, and passion fruit, and order wisely. Make sure to ask for a big drizzle of the coconut cream, too.

Ho'okipa Beach Park Maui

Ho'okipa Beach Park Arrow

Located miles away from the crowds, this pristine beach is nestled on the island's north shore alongside the Road To Hana . Thanks to its consistent winds, large waves, and sprawling reef system, this is one of Hawaii's best spots for windsurfing. Keep an eye out for the abundance of honu (green sea turtles). Many people miss these mystical sea creatures, especially as they blend in with the numerous exposed reefs and rocks along the beach. In the early evening, they tend to emerge from the sea to rest and, perhaps, to watch the beautiful sunsets. Maui institution Mama's Fish House is just down the road, so you can fuel up on locally-caught fish tacos and lobster tails after a day on the beach.

Default

Foodland Arrow

On the outside, Foodland seems like any other grocery store, but Maui locals recognize it as one of the island's best places for cheap, delicious poke. In fact, the Foodland poke bar has won numerous local awards for its selection of fresh fish, delicious toppings, and zesty sauces. There are some 33 locations across four Hawaiian islands, but the one on Front Street, in Lahaina, is especially worth a visit. Start with a foolproof mix of ahi tuna and tako (octopus) over a bed of warm rice, then make sure to ask what else is good that day. There are often specialties to try you won't find at your poke shop back home, like limu seaweed or opihi, an extra-briny Hawaiian shellfish.

United States Hawaii Maui Golf Course Wailea Golf Club

Wailea Golf Club Arrow

The Wailea Golf Club is one of the world's great golf destinations. Three distinct courses offer a variety of terrain and challenges, keeping pros raving and avid amateurs coming back year after year to better their game. The Wailea Emerald course has fabulous ocean views from every hole. The Wailea Blue's location, in the foothills of Haleakalā , provide a uniquely challenging course with unforgettable vistas over the island's largest dormant volcano.

United States Hawaii Maui Museum Bailey House Museum

Bailey House Museum Arrow

The Bailey House Museum, a small lava rock and Koa wood home, has seen many lives. Built in 1833 as a mission, it served as a female seminary, then a private home, and then a base during World War II. Today, the museum houses Maui's largest collection of Hawaiian artifacts. There's history throughout every inch, from the well-worn doorways to the creaky floors, all of which recall a time before Maui became known as a tony resort town.

DT Fleming Beach Maui

D.T. Fleming Park Arrow

With food, amenities, soft sand, and approachable waves, this is the perfect beach for families. The waves can be aggressive on occasion, but generally the water is safe. It's adjacent to the Ritz Carlton and Kapalua resorts, so it's not one of Maui's more remote beaches, but that's not why you come here. It has everything you need, from restrooms complete with outdoor rinse showers, a burger shack for a snack, plenty of knowledgable lifeguards, barbecue grills, picnic tables, a payphone (hey, who knows what you might need), and ironwood trees in case you need a bit of shade. Go for a swim, bring the kids, float around, and let loose. This is carefree Hawaii at its best.

With thorough, well-written information about the most popular and lesser-known spots on Maui, the Moon Maui guide may be your best bet for well-known activities as well as some you haven’t even considered. We particularly enjoyed the “ Best of Maui in 10 Days “, which gives you a realistic and well-paced agenda of what to do and see on your vacation, including time for relaxation , exploring the Road to Hana, and even the best places to grab brunch. You definitely get the feeling Kyle has followed his own 10-day agenda many times and provides great suggestions to begin and end your trip on the perfect note.  If you’re into a more go-with-the-flow approach to your Hawaiian vacation, Moon Maui also outlines the best attractions so you can decide when, where, and what to do based on your interests, including the Best Beaches, Best Snorkeling & Diving, Best Surfing, Best Hikes Best Outdoor Adventures, Best Historical & Cultural Sites and Best Activities for Honeymooners.  Since many vacationers only pass through Upcountry Maui on the dark, early morning drive to reach the top of Haleakala Volcano, it’s refreshing to see such a thorough section about this lesser-visited, beautiful area of the island, including nature trails, yoga studios , spas, farms, gardens, and historical sights.  You can definitely tell the author has spent lots of time exploring both the current and historical gems of the island, including those on neighbor islands Lana’i and Molokai, and offers little-known tips and useful information that Maui residents have mastered over the years. While the black and white photos that make up most of the book may not look as pretty as some of the other guidebooks, the information is what’s important, and we definitely recommend it for an in-depth look into life in paradise.

Maui Guidebooks Rainbow

Maui Revealed:   The Ultimate Guidebook

Of course, you’ve probably already heard about this blue book called Maui Revealed The Ultimate Guidebook . Part of a series of books on all of the Hawaiian Islands , Maui Revealed is a thorough guide to the island and its many once-secret locations. This guidebook is detailed and covers the entire island of Maui. We highly suggest, when following this book, to stay out of areas that are private property. Maui Revealed  will tell you about these spots and only briefly mention the illegality of going there. Many local people hate this book because it explains where to go near their homes to find the best beaches, waterfalls, and views. With accurate maps of the  Road to Hana , Maui Restaurants, and descriptions with directions of the  Best Maui Beaches , the Ultimate Guidebook is a helpful companion for your Maui vacation.

Maui Trailblazer:   Where to Hike, Snorkel, Paddle, Surf, Drive (Hawaiian Hiking Guide)

A quality guide to Maui for both family visitors as well as adventurous outdoor vacationers. The Maui trailblazer covers in detail the best spots to hike, snorkel, surf, boogie board, kayak, as well as restaurants and Maui accommodations. In the kid’s section, the Maui Trailblazer also focuses on families with young children.

Frommer’s Maui

Refreshingly candid about what is touristy and what is not, Frommer’s honestly goes over Maui with a fine comb. With information on Maui and Molokai, Frommer’s does not disappoint. This Maui guidebook goes over the Road to Hana mile by mile, much like Maui Revealed. The hotel reviews are in-depth and extremely helpful. A major plus to this Travel Book is that it’s updated every year so you know the descriptions are accurate.

Maui Guidebooks Kihei

Fodor’s Maui:   with Molokai & Lanai

Fodor’s is also an expert on travel and it shows with this quality publication. It goes over the neighboring islands of Molokai and Lanai as well as Maui to help you get the most out of the county. The Maui Beach maps and places to stay in Maui are helpful. This guide is smaller and easier to read than the others.

This is a well-written Maui Travel Book with expert advice on finding the best Maui beaches, most romantic spots, and excellent places to eat. This guide goes over lodging as well as activities for any budget range.

Remember to pack sunscreen and water, though — this spot doesn’t have much shade.

For those who love diving into waves without a board, Baldwin Beach is your go-to place for  bodysurfing and bodyboarding .

Thanks to vigilant lifeguards  keeping watch, you can enjoy these activities safely.

It’s not just about sports here; the beach invites you to relax on its  expansive shores  or enjoy a meal with friends at one of the picnic tables under the pavilion roof.

Preparation is key when visiting Baldwin Beach Park. Since it faces  full sun exposure , don’t forget UV protection and your surfboard or boogie board!

windsurfing beach on maui - Ho'okipa Beach Park_1

Ho’okipa Beach Park is the  windsurfing capital of the world, where waves and wind meet to create perfect conditions for this exciting water sport.

Surfers from all over come here to ride the big waves.

In winter, from December to February , these waves get even bigger! It’s a sight you don’t want to miss.

This beach isn’t just for surfers; it’s also one of the top spots on Maui’s North Shore to see Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles. They often rest on the sandy shore in the afternoon sun.

Watching these amazing creatures is a peaceful way to spend your time at Ho’okipa Beach Park.

Remember: Look but don’t touch! These turtles are protected by law.

The weather at Ho’okipa can change quickly, and  strong ocean currents make swimming dangerous sometimes.

There are  safety signs and lifeguards  there to help keep everyone safe. So always listen to their advice before you jump into the water or wander too far down the beach.

Mama’s Beach, also known as  Kuau Cove , sits just past Paia town. This place is a gem for those who love  swimming, snorkeling, and discovering sea pools .

It offers peace away from the crowded spots on Maui’s North Shore.

You won’t find big crowds here, making it perfect for families or anyone wanting to relax by the sea.

Enjoy the sand between your toes without the hustle of more popular beaches nearby.

Kanaha Beach Park on Maui_2

Technically in Kahului, a few minutes down the road from Paia, Kanaha Beach Park is a big,  peaceful place by the sea that locals love.

People come here to play with the wind and waves, using kites and boards. This beach has everything you need – places to sit and enjoy a meal outside,  clean toilets , showers to rinse off saltwater, and  lifeguards watching over swimmers .

Moreover, it’s easy to get here from Kahului Airport because there’s  plenty of room for cars .

This spot on Maui’s North Shore stands out because it offers  awesome activities without too many people around.

You can ride the waves if that’s your thing or just chill and soak up the serene vibe far from busy tourist spots.

But keep in mind – weather changes fast here,  ocean currents are strong , and  breaks near the shore can be tricky . For those who love water sports or just want a calm day by the ocean – Kanaha Beach Park is perfect.

baby beach in maui_4

Baby Beach in Sprecklesville area, Maui is a great option for families with young children.

It is a protected beach with a natural barrier reef that creates calm, shallow waters, making it ideal for toddlers and young kids to play safely in the water.

The beach is located just south of Baldwin Beach, which has restrooms and other amenities.

While Baby Beach itself does not have restrooms , the larger Baldwin Beach nearby does.

The area is known for its beautiful scenery, with views of the West Maui Mountains, and it is a quieter, less crowded beach compared to some of the more popular tourist spots.[

Overall, Baby Beach is a great choice for families looking for a safe, relaxing beach experience on Maui.

paia bay on maui_2

Paia Bay is located just east of Baby Beach , connected by a trail that runs along the coastline.

Like Baby Beach, Paia Bay features a natural reef that creates calm, protected waters, making it a good choice for families with young children.

The beach has soft, sandy areas as well as some rocky sections. While Paia Bay does not have the same level of amenities as the larger Baldwin Beach Park, it is still a scenic and peaceful spot to visit.

There are no lifeguards, restrooms, or other facilities directly at Paia Bay itself. However, the nearby Baldwin Beach Park does have restrooms, showers, and other amenities that beachgoers can utilize.

Paia Bay is known for its beautiful views of the West Maui Mountains and the coastline. It tends to be less crowded than some of the more popular tourist beaches in the area.

The beach can get quite windy at times, so it’s a good idea to check the conditions before visiting.

Overall, Paia Bay is a lovely, protected beach option that is well-suited for families looking for a quieter, more natural beach experience in Maui.

Tavares Beach in Maui_1

Tavares Beach, also known as Lamalani Beach,  is a medium-sized crescent-shaped sandy white beach located just outside of the town of Paia on Maui’s North Shore.

The beach is about 150 yards long and has easy access and ample parking .

Tavares Beach is a popular spot for swimming, snorkeling, spearfishing, rock jumping, surfing, and windsurfing. The reef close to shore helps keep the waves relatively mild, making it a good option for families with young children.

However, the beach can get quite crowded on weekends and holidays, so it’s best to visit during the week if possible.

The beach does have some downsides – it can have a lot of seaweed at certain times of year, and there are exposed boulders in the water that beachgoers need to be aware of.

There are also no facilities like restrooms or showers directly at Tavares Beach itself.

Overall, Tavares Beach is a scenic and relatively uncrowded option on Maui’s North Shore, though it can get busy on weekends.

Every beach in Paia has something special to offer. You’ll find cool waves perfect for surfing at Ho’okipa Beach Park, and colorful fish waiting to be discovered while snorkeling at Sugar Cove Beach.

Enjoy a peaceful picnic under the sun at Kanaha Beach Park, where you can relax with friends or family.

Each shore here promises adventure and relaxation in its unique way, setting the stage for unforgettable memories by the sea.

Whether you’re riding the waves or exploring underwater worlds, Paia’s beaches have it all.

Ho’okipa Beach Park is known as the  windsurfing capital of our planet. Surfers from all over come to ride its waves.

The  strong winds  and big  surf breaks  make it a perfect spot for this thrilling water sport.

You’ll see many people with their boards, waiting for the right wave to catch.

This beach is also one of the top places to see  Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles   basking on the sand . After surfing, you can relax and watch these amazing creatures from a distance.

Sugar Cove Beach offers a  quiet spot away from crowds , perfect for families and anyone looking to enjoy the underwater world in peace.

The calm waters here provide a safe haven for snorkeling adventures .

Thanks to its secluded location, you’ll find an  array of sea life close to shore . Expect to see  colorful fish and perhaps even a turtle  or two gliding through the clear water.

Late spring through early fall marks the best time to visit for  smooth sea conditions . This timeframe ensures that your  under-the-sea exploration is as enjoyable as possible.

So grab your snorkel gear and prepare for an unforgettable experience at Sugar Cove Beach, where the  ocean’s treasures await just beneath the surface .

Kanaha Beach Park is a great spot for picnics on Maui’s North Shore. This beach has plenty of  picnic tables where you can sit and enjoy your meals.

With the blue ocean in front of you and the gentle breeze around, it feels just perfect.

The park also offers  clean restrooms and showers , making it easy to clean up after a day of fun.

Families love this place because it’s quiet and  less crowded  than other beaches. A lifeguard is always on duty, adding an extra layer of safety for kids playing in the water or sand.

If you’re bringing food, there are  spots with roofs  that offer shade from the sun.

Bringing your meal here means enjoying some time away from busy restaurants. It lets you relax with waves as background music.

Pack sandwiches, fruits, and cold drinks before heading out to Kanaha Beach Park for a memorable beach day experience.

windsurfers in maui

Maui’s North Shore is a gem that shines year-round, but its beaches have secrets depending on the season.

From late spring to early fall , the ocean calms down. This makes it  perfect for snorkeling and swimming .

The  water is clearer and quieter , inviting you to explore its underwater world or just float under the sun.

Keiki (kids) can play in shallower waters during these months. It’s a time when families can enjoy beach days fully.

Winter brings a different kind of magic to the North Shore, especially  from December to February .  Surfers flock to spots like Ho’okipa Beach Park because of the huge waves.

Watching surfers tackle these giants from places like Hookipa Beach Lookout becomes an exciting activity in itself.

Even if you don’t surf, feeling the power of nature from shore is unforgettable.

Choosing when to visit depends on what you want from your trip. For  calm seas and family-friendly swims , come between late spring and early fall.

Adventure seekers looking for big waves should aim for winter months.

No matter when you decide to come, Maui’s North Shore beaches offer experiences that stay with you long after your tan fades.

Visiting Paia’s beaches in Maui brings you closer to paradise. You’ll find fewer crowds and a chilled-out vibe that makes every moment memorable.

Here are some key tips to make your beach trip perfect.

  • Pick the right time :  Late spring to early fall  is best for calm waters ideal for snorkeling and swimming. If you love big waves, visit Ho’okipa Beach Park between December and February.
  • Protect marine life : Always remember, the ocean is home to countless sea creatures. Use  reef-safe sunscreen  to keep their habitat clean and safe.
  • Pack wisely : Bring everything you might need—sunscreen, water, snacks, and a  beach towel or chair . Some beaches lack shops nearby, so it’s smart to come prepared.
  • Respect local guidelines : Pay attention to any posted signs about  swimming conditions or protected areas  on the beach. Lifeguards know these waters well; listen if they offer advice.
  • Explore responsibly :  Leave no trace behind to preserve these beautiful spots for others. Take your trash with you and avoid disturbing wildlife or plants.

Enjoying Paia’s stunning beaches means soaking in their natural beauty while respecting the environment and  local culture . These simple steps ensure a fantastic experience for everyone who visits this special part of Maui.

Remember, whether you’re planning a full day of activities or just a quick visit, always respect the local guidelines and help keep our beautiful beaches clean. Happy beach-going!

best paia beaches maui - pin

Paia beaches are a North Shore paradise, famous for their long white sand stretches and beautiful views.

They have everything from small, secret spots like Secret Beach to popular destinations like Baldwin Beach. Plus, the hippie vibe of Paia town adds a unique charm you won’t find elsewhere on Maui.

2. Can I find any hidden gems among Paia’s beaches?

Absolutely! If you’re up for an adventure, Makana Maui Adventures can guide you to some less-known spots away from the usual crowd. Places like Stable Road Beach or the more secluded Tavares Beach offer peace and quiet along with stunning scenery.

Yes, indeed! Baby Beach is perfect for families looking for calm waters where little ones can play safely. It has a protective reef that keeps big waves at bay, making it an ideal spot for a fun day under the sun.

Think about what you want from your beach day… Looking for great snorkeling spots? Try Baldwin Beach early in the morning before heading out on the Road to Hana. Wanting just to chill and maybe catch some windsurfers in action? Head over to Paia Bay or Stable Road later in the day.

Sunscreen is a must – protect that skin! Also, pack plenty of water, snacks (poke from Foodland is always a hit), and maybe even something for shade like an umbrella or tent if planning to stay all day since not all beaches have shaded areas.

Start your day early; this way, you’ll snag good parking spots (which can be scarce) and experience serene morning vibes by the ocean… And remember – leave no trace behind so these gorgeous beaches remain pristine for years to come.

The 10 Best Beaches in Maui

A fter catastrophic wildfires in August 2023, Maui is inviting thoughtful travelers to return to the island and visit with compassion and care for the local community . With tourism as the driving force behind the island's economy, travelers can show support by stepping out of resorts and shopping from local stores, making an effort to get to know the community and leaving the island's stunning natural spaces even better than they found them-including the beaches.

Many of the softest and sandiest beaches lie in the sheltered leeward areas on the western and southern shores, but the hidden eastern coves near Hana also beckon, especially the emerald-green waters of Hamoa and northern Ho‘okipa, a spot prized by expert surfers and windsurfers.

When hitting the beach, make sure to leave only a gentle footprint: Bring reusable bags and water bottles, pick up litter, and choose your sunscreen wisely. Hawaii has a ban on oxybenzone and octinoxate -two common sunscreen ingredients that have been shown to bleach and stunt coral. "To have less impact, choose eco-conscious products like Maui-made Raw Love Sunscreen or sun-protective UPF clothing like rash guards and leggings," advises marine biologist Lila Jones of Mermaid Dream Retreats .

Once you're set with supplies, get ready to soak up some sun or surf at one of these 10 beautiful beaches in Maui.

1. Hamoa Beach

  • Best for: surfers
  • Facilities: restrooms, showers, foot-washing station, picnic tables, paved walkway to beach, nearby street parking
  • Location: Google Maps
  • Where to stay: Hamoa Bay House & Bungalow

An isolated strand, this gem on Maui's eastern tip lies just off the 52-mile Road to Hana . Drivers on the legendary highway tend to zoom right past Hamoa's golden sands and clear, emerald-green waters, but the savvy ones stop and stay a while-and bring a boogie board. Both Mark Twain and author James Michener fell for this sheltered, palm-fringed shoreline, which is arguably Maui's most beautiful beach. You will too.

2. Ho‘okipa Beach Park

  • Best for: swimmers who love water sports of all kinds
  • Facilities: ADA accessible, parking, restrooms, picnic areas, grills, pavilions, water fountains, showers
  • Where to stay: Mangolani Inn

At Ho‘okipa Beach Park on Maui's north-central coast, reef breaks pock the Pacific, attracting expert surfers and windsurfers. You can watch the thrill seekers' acrobatics from the aptly named Lookout Cliff, or seek something more laid-back via Ho‘okipa's white sands and tide pools teeming with marine life. Another highlight remains the honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles), most reliably spotted right before sunset as they haul ashore to sleep.

3. Honokalani Beach

  • Best for: landscape photographers
  • Facilities: camping, restrooms, outdoor shower, hiking trails, picnic tables; all facilities located in the park, not necessarily near the beach
  • Where to stay: Waiʻanapanapa State Park cabins

The 122-acre Waiʻanapanapa State Park on Maui's eastern coast encompasses lava caves, blowholes, sea stacks, a natural stone arch, native hala (pandanus tree) groves, and Polynesia's largest known heiau (an ancient Hawaiian temple). While the area is sacred to Hawaiians, most travelers come here for Honokalani Beach, which boasts black sands formed by the ocean battering a fractured lava flow. An essential stop amid Hana Highway's 620 curves, the wild, unspoiled beach is beautiful to explore-but, notably, is not safe for swimming. Fierce currents often rip through the bay, and the water gets deep close to shore.

4. Honolua Bay

  • Best for: snorkelers, scuba divers, and surf spotters
  • Facilities: none
  • Where to stay: The Ritz-Carlton Maui

A marine reserve, the rocky Honolua Bay on Maui's northwestern coast delivers some of the island's best snorkeling and scuba diving during the calm summer months. In the winter, as large storms move south of Alaska, the turquoise cove develops a hollow, powerful wave that draws expert surfers and those eager to watch their tricks.

5. Ka'anapali Beach

  • Best for: families looking for lots of activities
  • Facilities: parking, restrooms, lifeguard
  • Where to stay: The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Ka'anapali

Resorts flank this scenic three-mile stretch of white sand in northwestern Maui, but it's wide enough to never feel crowded. A promenade runs the full length of the beach, from the Sheraton to the Hyatt hotels, allowing visitors with strollers and wheelchairs to easily soak up the views and sunrays. Head to the central area for the best bodysurfing, then continue to the northern Pu'u Keka'a (Black Rock) to watch the sunset. Stay put until it's dark to catch the nightly torch-lighting ceremony and cliff dive, which honors King Kahekili, the first human to brave this leina a kaʻuhane (a place where ancient Hawaiians believed their spirits leapt into the afterlife).

6. Kanaha Beach

  • Best for: windsurfers of all levels
  • Facilities: picnic tables, grills, volleyball courts, parking, restrooms, showers, water fountains
  • Where to stay: Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa

Only a six-minute drive from the airport in north Maui, Kanaha Beach is a world-famous windsurfing spot. There's even a beginner reef break here, though you'll need to paddle out about 450 feet to catch the smaller waves. For the less adventurous, the beach is also good for swimming and has a large, grassy picnic area. Order a lunch box to go from nearby Hawaiian spot Tin Roof -the garlic shrimp and mochiko chicken are both exceptional-and savor it here, in view of the sparkling water.

7. Kapalua Bay

  • Best for: enthusiastic swimmers
  • Facilities: parking, restrooms,
  • Where to stay: Napili Kai Beach Resort

At Kapalua , two reefs form a half-moon cove, hence the beach's name, which roughly translates to "arms embracing the sea." The northeastern hot spot is one of Maui's best swimming beaches, but the center of the bay is sandy, making for slightly cloudy water and only so-so snorkeling. (If you really want to see marine life, head next door to the clearer Namalu Bay.)

8. Maalaea Bay

  • Best for: beach walkers
  • Facilities: street parking
  • Where to stay: Villa Moana

Shielded by the Haleakalā volcano from morning breezes, this southern Maui beach features hard-packed sand rinsed by gentle surf. While many whale-watching and snorkeling tours depart from the adjacent harbor, near the aquarium Maui Ocean Center, Maalaea boasts two and a half miles of beauty completely uninterrupted by buildings. Combine a beach walk here with a stop at the nearby Maui Tropical Plantation , which offers a park, farm tours, zip-lining, a café, and a boutique.

9. Mākena State Park

  • Best for: beach-goers who love untouched landscapes
  • Facilities: restrooms, trash cans, concessions, picnic tables, paid parking
  • Where to stay: Mākena Surf Resort

One of Maui's largest wild beaches, Mākena stretches for three-quarters of a mile along the island's southwestern sweep. Here, the distinctive Pu'u Olai cinder cone shades the sugary sand, and black lava outcrops offer protection from the trade winds. The often calm waters attract swimmers, snorkelers, and fishers, while the clothing-optional Little Beach, on the other side of the promontory, draws those willing to show some skin.

10. Wailea Beach

  • Best for: whale spotters
  • Facilities: accessible parking, restrooms, picnic tables, shower, grill
  • Where to stay: Andaz Maui

A third of a mile long, this southwestern beauty draws sun seekers with its tawny, fine-grained sands and whale sightings in the winter months. A paved path along the beach links several tiny resorts, including the design-forward Andaz Maui and the elegant but family-friendly Fairmont Kea Lani .
