Cinque Terre September 2023 This Cinque Terre 7 day walking tour was absolutely amazing! It’s worth every cent. Amazing walks, breathtaking scenery, scrumptious Italian food and wine. So well organized! This was my 5th trip with Walk About Italy.

Tuscany has my heart! This was a trip dreams are made of. I have always wanted to see Tuscany but I am not into touristy type trips. I was a little skeptical of this tour but booked it anyway. I was blown away….It exceeded my expectations. Our guides Daniele and Chiara were a JOY to be with. They shared their countryside with us and they shared themselves. Beautiful souls. For me the hiking was wonderful and I would have done more…but beware this is definitely more of a hiking than walking tour. The food was wonderful and the wine amazing! I highly recommend. I can’t wait to try another tour.

A fantastic, boutique walking tour. Ermes and Gianni were great guides who were very accommodating and supportive; Hotels were in great location, clean and friendly staff. Breakfast was great. Great food. The ability to accommodate for individuals food requirements was great. Ermes and Gianni were fantastic guides. They complemented each other with their guiding and jokes etc. We would recommend this tour to others.

I recently embarked on a captivating tour through the picturesque regions of Umbria and the Marche in Italy. Our itinerary included enchanting stops in Montefalco, Assisi, Spello, Urbino, and the stunning Adriatic coastline. Our experienced guides, Federico and Roberto, made the journey even more engaging. Gianni, the owner of Walk About Italy, joined our group for three days, infusing a personal touch into the experience. This adventure was genuinely extraordinary, and I can’t recommend it enough!

This daylong expedition takes travelers to the towns comprising the Cinque Terre , a string of old fishing villages overlooking the Mediterranean Sea that form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Buses travel from Florence to Manarola, home to vineyards and colorful buildings typical of the area. From there, trains head to Corniglia, which boasts unrivaled views of the sea. After lunch, participants can either hike the mule trails that connect the towns or ride a train to Vernazza, where swimming or visiting cafes and bars are among the optional activities. Trains then proceed to Monterosso, a town known for both beaches and shops. Weather permitting, the tour also includes a boat ride to the fifth and final Cinque Terre town, Riomaggiore. Trip-takers rave about both the scenic locations and the efficient, personable guides.

Tourgoers return to Florence approximately 13 hours after the daily 7:30 a.m. departure time. Tickets for the tour start at around 113 euros (about $123) for adults and 100 euros (about $109) for kids 8 to 17. Children younger than 8 are not permitted. The 7 best walking tours of Italy

best walking tours italy

What are guided walking tours?

Walking tours refer to tours that explore an area of interest, whether it be a single site or a particular geographical space, all on foot instead of relying on vehicles. These tours provide an expert tour guide on ground to give you in-person, real-time communication about the attraction you are visiting.

Do you have to walk a lot in Italy?

There is so much to see in every nook and cranny of towns and cities in Italy, that using vehicular transport every time would take away from the true pleasures of experiencing it. Walk around and let your senses be (positively) overwhelmed with the gems you have to discover along the way!

Is it easy to walk around in Italy?

It really depends on a range of factors. Some cities in Italy such as Florence are much easier to walk around in, whilst others such as Rome and Milan have a much more vast, spread out network that make it more challenging. However, most places in Italy have their own historic center , which are relatively easier to walk around, with important sites historically being grouped closer together.

Is it better to see Italy through tours or on your own?

We wholeheartedly argue that using tours to explore Italy completely changes your experience for the better , letting you capture the most value in limited time. We think that if you do Italy once (although the dream is to be able to ‘do’ Italy repeatedly), you might as well do it right! This is why we have made it our mission to design the widest range of possible tours for you to take, so that you will never run out of options and will always be able to find something that feels completely tailored for you, your trip’s logistics and your personal interests.

The following article will now continue to analyze the best walking tours in Italy , providing you with the best picks in case you decide to venture into tour experiences for your time in Italy.

Colosseum Underground Tour with Ancient Rome

You can’t walk through Rome without paying a visit to the Colosseum and its surrounding areas.

The Colosseum is arguably the most famous ancient amphitheater that has made it to today’s contemporary era. The gladiator fights that would take place there were beckoned as one of the biggest entertainment spectacles for the ancient Romans.  Tourists today still visit the Colosseum in order to admire its massive elliptical architecture as well as to imagine the gladiatoral activity that would occur there once upon a time.

Early morning vatican tour.

To visit Vatican City is one of the most highly esteemed journeys to make for Catholics and non-Catholics alike. There is a sacred spirituality that seems to loom around within the parameters of the city, especially due to the St Peter’s Basilica, the public appearances of the Pope and the cluster of Vatican museums.

Caravaggio tour

Although harsh in nature and not known to be the most amicable character, Caravaggio was still celebrated for his intensely realistic portraiture of people, brought out through chiaroscuro – a technique that used light and shadow to bring out provocative contrasts in his subjects. These expressed a very unique depiction of extreme emotions and vulnerability in the usually controversial scenes he portrayed.

Trastevere Food Tour

Trastevere happens to be one of the most sought out neighborhoods by tourists and Italians alike . It is one of the most beautiful districts that you can walk around in, with cobblestone streets leading you through piazzas with churches and alleys with little, colorful buildings drapes with lush, green foliage. If you come during the spring time, you will see the trellises bursting with purple visteria and bright pink bougainvillea. In the winter, the streets became cozier through the warm glow of fire burners and twinkling lights.

But Trastevere has a much deeper history than what meets the eye today. It used to be a working class neighborhood mostly occupied by fishermen, immigrants and artisans, until developments and the building of churches began there in the medieval period. What followed was a period of urbanization that has made it what it is today.

One Day Tour in Venice

Venice really is the sea-green, glittering marvel as is portrayed by those who visit. It is stupendously unparalleled as an experience, and has an incredible history, being founded by refugees escaping an invasion in the north of Italy by Germanic tribes, and then becoming a powerful Maritime Republic.

Due to its unique character, it can become a little difficult to navigate, with uncommon streets (mostly bridges that connect one street to another!) and the inaccessibility of parts of Venice due to the Grand Canal that divides some of it. This is why we have curated a widely flexible eight hour tour where we offer many mini itineraries for you to choose from !

The Best Walking Tours in Rome

The famous and historic Trevi fountain in Rome, Italy

Rome is a city with layers. Literally. Stretching back thousands of years, the ancient Italian capital has been built and rebuilt, sieged and sacked, and rebuilt some more. Its history is linked to countless world-changing events over the past 2,500 years, intricately connecting it to the entirety of Western civilization. (They don’t call it the Eternal City for nothing.)

Wandering through Rome, everywhere you go as there’s some ancient column or area that was built around historic ruins.

But most of these ruins don’t have signs. There’s no story.

If you want to peel back the layers of Rome, taking a walking tour is a must. It will give you the context and story of what you’re seeing so you can better understand how the city grew, came to be, and its culture. Whether you’re a foodie, history buff, or culture junkie, Rome boasts countless walking tours to help you peek beneath the layers and see beyond the cacophonous and overtouristed exterior.

To help you deepen your experience and learn about Rome’s history and culture, here’s my list of what I think are the best walking tours:

Best Overall Tour

The Take Walks walking tour company logo

Take Walks is my favorite walking tour company in the city. They offer over two dozen excellent and insightful tours and provide insider access to many of the best sights. For example, Take Walks is the only company that allows you to accompany the key master of the Vatican Museums . They also have an exclusive Colosseum tour with VIP access to the arena floor.

Best Free Tour

new Europe logo

New Europe offers three free tours that cover all the basics in Rome, introducing you to the city’s highlights, including the Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Colosseum, and more. With tours covering ancient Rome, the city center, and Rome at night, you can easily get the lay of the land on a budget with New Europe. Just remember to tip your guide!

While the two tours above are my top favorites, there are still a bunch of other great companies to consider when you visit Rome. Here are some more of my favorite walking tour companies in Rome:

1. Devour Tours

Devour is my favorite food tour company in the city. They currently have five different food tours around the city, including a guided tour through the atmospheric food market in Testaccio , where Roman cuisine was born, as well as a food and wine tour through the narrow, cobbled, trattoria-flanked streets of Trastevere. Both these tours will leave you really full. I was so stuffed at the end.

They also offer an in-depth three-hour pasta-making class with a local chef if you want to hone your culinary skills.

Tours from 65 EUR.

2. City Wonders

If you have a proclivity for the morbid and the mysterious, this is the company for you. They run chilling 3.5-hour tour around Romes crypts and catacombs . On the tour, you’ll visit the eerie Capuchin Crypt where the bones of over 4,000 monks rest, and explore the Basilica San Martino ai Monti. You’ll also get to visit Rome’s famous catacombs, where early Christians practiced their faith in secret some 2,000 years ago. The tour includes skip-the-line access so you never have to wait, as well as a coach to take you from site to site.

Tours from 59 EUR.

3. Elizabeth Lev

This American-born guide and published art historian has been a Rome resident for 20 years. She hosts in-depth theme-based walking tours ( I love traveling with a theme ). So, if you’ve ever daydreamed of having an actual art historian accompany you to the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica, give Elizabeth a call. Love Baroque sculptor Bernini? Go down a 17th-century rabbit hole with her. Want to fully indulge yourself in the intriguing history of Christian Rome? Elizabeth will take you there. No matter what your interests, Elizabeth can design a tour to suit your thematic needs.

Inquire via the website for tour pricing.

4. Fat Tire Tours

This is the best bike tour in the city. Fat Tire Tours offers a three-hour bike tour of the city center, covering all the highlights, from the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain to the Circus Maximus and the Jewish Ghetto. The tours are perfect for the busy budget traveler who wants to cram in a lot of activity in a short time — without skipping out on the details in the process. And, while these tours pack a lot in, they run at a leisurely pace so you won’t feel rushed (or exhausted) as you explore.

Tours from 39 EUR.

5. Stefano Rome Tours

Founded by tour guide Stefano Costantini, this company offers private tours in and around Rome. While they say that Rome wasn’t built in a day, Stefano can help you see it in a day. In fact, the most popular tour is Rome in a Day, though there are also special tours like Rome by Night, Christian Rome, or Angels and Demons (which focuses on the filming locations of Dan Brown’s Angels & Demons ).

Stefano also offers day trips to the countryside surrounding Rome, such as to the medieval hill town of Calcata, 40 miles to the north. This bewitching village is inhabited by artists and hippies and is famed for its…curious Christian relic (featured in the excellent travel book An Irreverent Curiosity ).

Tours from 370 EUR.

6. The Roman Guy

The Roman Guy isn’t just one guy anymore, but whoever your tour guide is, you’ll walk away feeling like you know Rome much better. A large number of quality tours are on offer, including all the standard hits like the Vatican, the Colosseum, the catacombs at night, Rome in a Day, and various skip-the-line options. There is also a cocktail bar–themed tour on which you can get acquainted with the city’s burgeoning booze scene, hitting some major sites while weaving from one bar to the next.

Tours from 27 EUR.

Regardless of your budget or interests, connecting with a local guide to show you around is a great way to learn about a city. Rome is a big city, making walking tours one of the best ways to explore it. Whether you’re a first-time visitor on a budget or a veteran traveler looking to deepen your knowledge with an in-depth experience, walking tours in Rome won’t disappoint. And, while Take Walks is my favorite company, you can’t go wrong with any tours on this list!

Book Your Trip to Rome: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Use Skyscanner to find a cheap flight. They are my favorite search engine because they search websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is left unturned!

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld as they have the biggest inventory and best deals. If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as they consistently return the cheapest rates for guesthouses and cheap hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • Safety Wing (best for everyone)
  • Insure My Trip (for those over 70)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

Looking for the Best Companies to Save Money With? Check out my resource page for the best companies to use when you travel. I list all the ones I use to save money when I’m on the road. They will save you money when you travel too.

Need a Guide? Rome has some really interesting tours. My favorite company is Take Walks . They have expert guides and can get you behind the scenes at the city’s best attractions.

“...one of the best vacations ever...”

Peggy and I had a fantastic walking tour in Tuscany! We want to give everyone in the Girosole organization who helped contribute a big “molto bene” for making this one of the best vacations ever. It’s obvious that Girosole had done a lot of research on the route, towns, accommodation and ristorantes. Everything that Girosole provided was first class. But what stood out for us was the customer service. We highly recommend Girosole and hope we’ll have the opportunity for returning – perhaps to explore Cinque Terre next time. Thanks once again for a memorable vacation.

“...wonderful and memorable experience...”

A truly wonderful and memorable experience! Luca was not only very knowledgeable and good company; he was always prepared to go the extra mile and nothing was too much trouble for him. We felt thoroughly spoilt. Thank you so much for all your efforts on our behalf. It really was a pleasure dealing with Girosole. Just as an aside: perhaps you should suggest that clients allow for A LOT of extra baggage space for pecorini cheese, paneforte, chianti classico vino, shoes and handbags!!!!!

Harry Vayo & Linda Woods

“...enjoyed our trip immensely...”

Our trip was wonderful! Luca was an excellent guide, very efficient, knowledgeable, and personable. I enjoyed practicing my rusty Italian with him, & he taught me several proverbs & expressions. When he saw I was very interested in Alpine wildflowers he helped me find & identify some along the trails. He was a delightful companion. The tour was very well designed, in terms of our hiking ability & fitness level. We started with a fairly easy hike & worked our way up to more challenging. At the end we felt like we’d had a good workout, but were not exhausted. The other couple in our group were very close to us in terms of experience & fitness. We’d recommend your tours to any active people who want to see Italy off the beaten path. We enjoyed our trip immensely & will remember it (& Luca) fondly. Thanks!

Christie and Bill Waters

"...the perfect combination..."

We had a marvelous trip, and much of it was due to the planning that went into the Girosole itinerary – it was the perfect combination of walking, scenery, history, culture, time spent with the group, and time to explore on our own. I can’t imagine a better way to see the Amalfi coast. Our guide Ulisse was very friendly and helpful – he did a wonderful job of keeping us organized, giving us the history of the area, and providing advice on things to do when we were on our own. We would like to travel again with Girosole (maybe Tuscany next time) and will certainly recommend the walking tours to all of our friends.

What to know about rome from our local guides.

What are the most important places to visit in Rome?

“If you're visiting Rome for the first time and staying for a few days, you definitely should see the historic center , the important squares (like Piazza Navona and the Spanish Steps ) the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon , the Vatican Museums (even better, do the Key Master’s Tour where you get to unlock the various rooms of the Vatican Museums together with the clavigero of the Vatican) and St. Peter's Basilica , Trastevere and of course the Colosseum . If you’re a returning visitor or are staying for more time, you should definitely include other museums such as the Capitoline Museums, Palazzo Altemps, Castel Sant'Angelo or even a day trip to Tivoli or the Castelli Romani area.”

Where are some great places to explore off the beaten path in Rome?

“ Testaccio , where I actually live. It's basically 10 minutes away from all the most important tourist areas but without being touristy itself. There you can find the ‘locals’ and learn about their habits.” Federica, Rome guide since 2007

“My favourites are the church of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, the Villa Borghese and the Theatre of Marcellus.” Andy, Rome guide since 2012

“I love Aventine Hill with its churches and gardens, the lesser-known part of Trastevere around Piazza dei Mercanti, Capitoline Hill, and the Roman Aqueducts.” Chiara, Rome guide since 1998

What are the best Rome tours to take with kids?

Rome is a fantastic city to explore with little ones in tow. For families looking to get an overview of Rome’s most iconic sights on a low-impact walking tour, our Welcome to Rome City Stroll is an excellent option that includes a gelato break.

Want to experience Rome's most iconic location in a family-friendly way? Kids of all ages will love the chance to step out onto the arena floor of the Colosseum just like the gladiators did!

Last but not least, don’t miss the chance to make your own homemade pasta or take a food tour in the family-friendly Testaccio neighborhood complete with freshly baked pastries, pizza, pasta, Roman-style panino sandwiches, and gelato for dessert! There’s no better way to introduce kids to Rome’s delicious cuisine.

When is the best time to visit Rome?

Rome offers something for everyone no matter what time of year you visit. We polled our expert guides and found that there’s really no bad time of year to visit—it all depends on the experience you’re hoping to have!

“The best moments to visit Rome are spring and autumn because of the good weather, but I also suggest winter because of the peaceful moments that are easily found due to the low season.” Cristina T, Rome guide since 2011

“The Lungotevere is wonderful during July and August when the kiosks and restaurants by the river are open in the evening.” Andy, Rome guide since 2012

“I would prefer January and February because the city is very quiet and not busy as in summer and spring.” Flavia, Rome guide since 2016

What are the best restaurants in Rome?

Italy is famous for its food—but even in Rome, not all restaurants are created equal. So how can you tell the authentic spots from the tourist traps?

First, head away from the big attractions—at least a few blocks. That’s not to say there are absolutely no good restaurants near the Colosseum or the Trevi Fountain—but most eateries near major monuments don’t exactly cater to locals.

Next, pay no attention to places with staff outside inviting you to eat there, or with large photos of the food visible. Romans don’t need to be told where or what to eat!

Finally, if a place is crowded and full of the sounds of chatter in Italian, it’s likely a safe bet that you’re in a local spot. This might mean shifting your mealtimes a bit later than what you’re used to (most Romans won’t eat lunch or dinner until at least 1 and 8 pm respectively), but it’s well worth the wait.

Looking for a few specific recommendations to get you started! Here are a few of our guide team’s favorite restaurants in Rome.

“Go to Checco er Carrettiere for vintage Roman vibes in the heart of Trastevere, some of the best supplì, and an extensive wine list.” Mirko, Rome guide since 2015

“PopiPopi in Trastevere (where I live) is still a typical Roman restaurant where a lot of local families go. The food is great and the waiters are professional but also caring and warm with every client. Cul de Sac has an unusual menu with top quality products and wines. And Court Delicati is an excellent, authentic Asian restaurant in a city where good ethnic food may be harder to find than in other European capitals.” Chiara, Rome guide since 1998

What are the best day trips to take from Rome?

There’s a lot to love about Rome, but one major plus is its central location in Italy, making it easy to travel all around the boot. A day trip to Tuscany makes a wonderful addition to your Italian holiday, with the opportunity to explore charming hillside villages and the famed Chianti wine region. Heading south, the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii are well worth the trip, and for the wine lovers, a winery visit on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius is a once-in-a-lifetime experience you won’t soon forget.

The Best Walking & Hiking Tours in Italy

Discover italy on an affordable walking holiday.

Italy is home to some of the world's best hiking trails because it has been blessed with a diverse and beautiful landscape.

Italy has such a mix of terrain, from the peaks of the Dolomites , islands of Sardinia , the lakes district near Como, the spectacular coastline paths of Amalfi and Cinque Terre , the other-worldliness of Puglia , and the green heart of Italy in Umbria and Tuscany ; not to mention the allure of the Via Francigena  and St Francis Way , otherwise known as Italy's Camino.

However it's not just the land that creates unforgettable walking experiences in Italy. The food and culture is unique to each region of Italy and on a walking tour you will completely immerse yourself within the local way of life.

Here we list the best walking tours in Italy that you can explore on an affordable self guided or small group walking holiday.

Walking in Puglia

Viewpoint of Matera and the Sassi cave dwellings | <i>Ross Baker</i>

Our Walking in Puglia tour is one of our most popular holidays in Italy, and rightly so. If you are unfamiliar with the Italian region of Puglia , in the 'heel' of the country, you will be gobsmacked by the fascinating architecture, history, and culture.

Highlights of Walking in Puglia are being mesmerised by landscapes of red earth, olive groves and vineyards; exploring the maze of narrow streets in the white city of Ostuni; and perhaps best of all, is staying in authentic accommodation with a couple of nights in a typical 'trullo' hotel room. If you'd like to read of more reasons to explore Puglia, see why we think you should take an active holiday in Puglia .

Cinque Terre Walk

The stunning village of Vernazza in the Cinque Terre | <i>Rachel Imber</i>

Fully absorb the breathtaking scenery of the colourful  Cinque Terre townships on this wonderful walking tour. The Cinque Terre Walk is a 7 day self guided walk where you make your own way around the five towns of the Mediterranean coastline. This trip is graded as introductory to moderate, so it is quite accessible and achievable for all levels of fitness.

Highlights of this walking holiday include exploring the charming towns of Corniglia, Vernazza, La Spezia and Riomaggiore. There is ample time for impromptu swim stops in the clear waters and the only reason you'll want to exit the water is to fetch a delicious gelato.

Walking in the Dolomites

Heading towards the Auronzo Hut in the Dolomites

Discover the dramatic limestone peaks of the Dolomites on this superb hiking holiday. The Walking in the Dolomites tour is an 8 day self guided journey that explores the striking cliffs and peaks of the Dolomite mountain range. It's not just alpine views however, there are low valleys filled with orchards, vineyards and fields to admire as well.

Highlights of this hike include seeing the Tre Cime mountain group, which is a famous block of three vertical sided, finger like towers; viewing the high cliffs of the Tofana, Sella and Marmolada massifs; and celebrating each days' rewarding walk with the local food and drink in the alpine restaurants.

Lake Como Walk

Above Lake Como

The Lake Como Walk tour is a centre based experience, meaning you only have to unpack once as you explore walking trails of the surrounding area. In this case, you stay in the delightful town of Menaggio which sits alongside Lake Como. From here, you can explore the various beautiful gardens and estates that the Como lakes are famous for, such as Villa Carlotta and Villa Melzi.

Highlights of this gentle self guided walking holiday is taking the ferry that crosses Lake Como to Bellagio and Varenna, walking to the Church of Saint Lucio that sits on the border of Italy and Switzerland, and perhaps spotting a celebrity like George Clooney as they (and you!) relax in the peaceful setting.

Via Francigena: Italy's Camino Pilgrimage

Pilgrim walking into St Peters in Rome at the end of the Via Francigena | <i>Tim Charody</i>

The Via Francigena is Italy's version of Spain's world famous Camino de Santiago . This pilgrimage trail begins high in the Swiss Alps, from the Great St Bernard Pass, and ends in the Eternal City of Rome. The full Via Francigena takes 50 days to complete and is truly a once in a lifetime achievement. UTracks have also segmented the Via Francigena into more achievable sections so you can experience this great trail without time constraints.

The most popular stretch is from Orvieto to Rome , which is a 10 day stage that rewards walkers with the historical end point in Rome. Or you can walk the Best of Tuscany which showcase the highlights of one of Italy's most classic regions. There are two options for a guided walking tour of the Via Francigena, with the 13 day ' Best of the Via Francigena ' trip, and the ' Food Lover's Via Francigena ' tour that pairs great walking with fine food and wine.

Rome and the Amalfi Coast on Foot

The Mediterranean from Ravello

This Top 10 walks of Italy just keeps getting better, doesn't it?! Here we have the Rome and the Amalfi Coast on Foot walking tour, another unmissable hike to do in Italy. This takes you on some essential Italian activities: climbing Mount Vesuvius, exploring the exquisite island of Capri, walking the spectacular 'Path of the Gods' along the Amalfi coastline .

Want more? You can also sample fresh local produce like wines, cheeses, and the regions famous limoncello liqueur. Explore the ruined city of Pompeii and witness ancient life trapped in volcanic ash. Wander the beautiful streets of Sorrento and gasp at the breathtaking coast views. And also take on the fascinating history of Ancient Rome with an expert local guide.

This particular tour is an immersive 8 day experience; if you'd like further great walking tours along the Amalfi Coast be sure to read our Best Walking Tours on the Amalfi Coast list .

Gran Paradiso Adventure

The Gran Paradiso National Park offers spectacular alpine walking

Looking for an alpine trek that's not the Tour du Mont Blanc? Try the Gran Paradiso Adventure hiking tour. This is a 7 day guided alpine walk that leads you through Italy's first national park, the Gran Paradiso National Park. Here it's possible to spot wild ibex and chamois every day as they inhabit this protected area.

Highlights include exceptional views of Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn Ranges, postcard perfect scenes of rugged valleys covered with wildflowers and snow, and each night enjoying the camaraderie of other trekkers in the charming, character-filled mountain refuges.

Exploring Tuscany Hilltop Towns

Cypress Avenue near Montalto | <i>John Millen</i>

Does life get more romantic than a stroll through the Tuscany Hilltops ? Explore classic Tuscan scenery on the this relaxed pace holiday that takes you on a 8 day self guided journey. This walk takes you along steep valleys, dense forests, rivers and the legendary “badlands” eroded clay slopes.

It's a perfect introduction to the region for people who love medieval villages, hilltop towns, fine wine, food and vineyards. There's also opportunity to visit the Renaissance city of Pienza, which is beautiful.

A Saunter in Sardinia

The picturesque island of Sardinia, Italy

Visit the Italian island of Sardinia and you won't be disappointed. It's an inspiring island that's full of natural beauty. While on the fun walking tour, A Saunter in Sardinia , you'll spot white sand beaches, ancient Roman ruins, the Vernaccia vineyards and an abundance of bird life with large colonies of pink flamingoes and grey herons.

Hear how another hiker reviewed the trip: "If you want to get away from typical tourist trails and enjoy hiking this is an ideal trip. The walk takes you from the beautiful mountain area of Santu Lussurgiu (where the accommodation has a Michelin plate restaurant) down to the western coast of Sardinia and its stunning cliffs. The accommodation was perfect and there was the opportunity to dine on delicious Italian fare in each town. I would do the same trip again!"

St Francis Way: Italian Camino

The hilltop town of Anghiari along the St Francis Way in western Tuscany

The St Francis Way is a Camino pilgrimage route inspired by the life of St Francis of Assisi. It connects the historic cities of Florence and Rome by way of an ancient Roman road, and the route showcases the picturesque beauty of Tuscany and Umbria . Think forests, olive groves and orchards sprinkled with churches and tiny cobble-stone villages.

The St Francis Way is broken into several stages that are ably walked. The route beings in the town of Chiusi and continues until you reach the Eternal City of Rome. There are various 7 day walking stages between, and all of them are self guided allowing for great flexibility while walking.

10 of the best long-distance walking routes in Italy

A new ‘slow tourism’ initiative is promoting 70 trails from Sicily to Friuli. We pick some of the most beautiful

I o Cammino in Italia (I Walk in Italy) is a campaign by walkers, guides, tour operators and hospitality providers, set up amid the coronavirus pandemic to work with local authorities to promote “slow tourism” on the country’s long-distance trails. The aim is to help rural economies hit by months of lockdown.

“In just a few days our lives changed,” says leading member Gianluigi Bettin, a guidebook writer and sustainable-tourism expert. “We became suddenly aware of our vulnerability. Now, even if our bodies are healthy, we can see that our society is not, and it’s not all down to Covid-19. Many of us see the chance, even the need, to reassess our lifestyle and values. And one simple way to do this is to walk more.”

The network covers almost 70 trails (from four-stage walks of around 60km to one of 1,006km) and most are now well-organised with waymarking, GPS and accommodation listings. Websites are mostly in Italian, but the group’s Facebook page can be used to post questions in English.

Here are 10 rewarding routes – all waymarked – with standout places to stay and eat along the way.

Various routes across the island, 1,500km The Santu Jacu network – originally used by pilgrims heading to the north-west of the island to cross to Spain for Santiago de Compostela – takes in Sardinia’s wild interior and varied coast but also has historic and cultural interest, with bronze age nuraghe, Phoenician, Greek and Roman ruins, and Romanesque churches. A demanding stretch crosses the limestone massif of the Supramonte, with caves, ravines and bandit history; a southern section from Cagliari offers sweeping coastal views.

Unforgettable sights include the mosaics of Monreale cathedral; Santa Cristina Gela, a village 20km south of Palermo famous for cannoli and for Arbëreshë (a form of Albanian) being spoken; Prizzi, one of the highest villages in Sicily; and Sutera, at the foot of Monte San Paolino.

Bari-Matera, 170km Suited to less-experienced walkers, this route, part of the Cammino Materano network, runs across central Puglia into “Lucania” (now Basilicata). Endless olive groves, drystone walls and trulli give way to oak and pine woods, then deep ravines near Matera. Walkers can refuel on crusty Altamura bread (famed since Horace praised it in 37BC) with sheep and goat’s cheese while walking between ancient villages and rock-cut churches. Not one for the hotter months of the year.

Eat Pecora Nera country pub , Cassano delle Murge The Black Sheep pub, 25km from Bari, is a little way out of the village but famous among walkers for its beers and its braised pork shanks.

A suggestion – for carnivores – is to eat like a local in Santeramo in Colle , about halfway along the route. Several of the town’s butchers offer hot food to take away or eat at simple paper-covered tables. It’s mostly meat, naturally, with grilled horse a speciality, but lots of other choices, depending on the day.

Walking Tours in Rome

Rome isn’t a big city, and walking is by far the best way to see it. Finding ancient remains nestled between shops, pieces of ancient statues decorating the sidewalk, and churches filled with mosaics and artistic masterpieces is part of the Rome experience that can only be enjoyed walking through the Eternal City.

Is Rome a Walkable City?

Rome wasn’t designed for cars, but it’s perfect for walking. From Piazza Venezia , the Colosseum , Pantheon , Spanish Steps , Trevi Fountain , Piazza Navona , Campo dè Fiori , and the Jewish Ghetto are all less than 20 minutes away on foot, meaning you can see a lot in a day at a leisurely pace.

Summer in Rome can be hot, so be careful, especially in July and August when temperatures are often around 100°F/38°C. Rome has a lot of wide streets, open squares, and archaeological parks that offer little shade during the heat of the day.

Try to start early, stay inside during the hottest part of the day, and come out again in the evening when the city is cooling down like the locals do.

Conclusion: Rome is a walkable city if you are used to walking and avoid walking when the sun is hot.

Is it Worth Doing Guided Walking Tours in Rome?

With more than 2000 years of emperors and popes to get your head around, not to mention the artists and aristocracy who have lived in Rome, taking a guided tour can help you make sense of what you are seeing and prevent information overload.

Tour operators also have access to exciting options that are not available to the general public, like the chance to be the first to enter the Sistine Chapel in the morning or visit the Vatican Museums after hours.

But you don’t need a guide for every place. Rome is beautiful even if you don’t know the history of what you are seeing, and some places, like the catacombs and the Domus Aurea, can only be visited with their guides, so the tour is included in the ticket price.

Conclusion: Guided tours can give you exclusive access to some locations and help you to focus on the most important details at the most popular sites, but there’s also a lot you can see on your own.

How do Guided Tours Compare to Self-Guided or Free Walking Tours?

If you want to keep costs low, many places in Rome are easy to visit on your own with a guidebook. Get a map and plan a themed route, for example:

  • The squares and fountains of Rome
  • Bernini sculptures (minus Galleria Borghese )
  • Churches with Caravaggio paintings
  • Medieval mosaics
  • Ancient monuments

Or create your own street food tour by picking the best places to try supplì , pizza al taglio , trappizzino , tiramisu, and gelato , passing beautiful monuments on the way.

Free walking tours are another option if you don’t want to break the bank. These kinds of tours will show you a small part of the city. They usually last a couple of hours at the beginning or end of the day and don’t include any entrance fees, and are tip-based at your discretion.

Conclusion: If you’re on a budget, guided tours aren’t your only option. There are some excellent resources you can use to explore on your own and free tours that can offer an introduction to some of the monuments in the city center.

What Should I Look for to Find the Right Walking Tour for Me?

Do you want a group tour? A small group tour? A private tour? Consider your budget and the kind of experience you want to find the right tour .

Group Tours

While a group walking tour might cost you €50 per person, you could be with 30+ other people, with little chance of interacting with the guide, who is hooked up to a radio system. However, these tours can be great if you just want to hear a little information about a place, to know what’s important to look at and don’t feel like reading a guidebook.

Small Group Tours

Walking tours with fewer than 10 people in a group will cost more (think around €100 per person), but you can ask questions and talk to other people in the group. The guide will have some flexibility to adapt the tour to the ages and interests of the group, offering you a more personalized type of tour.

Private Tours

Private guides offer maximum flexibility and, for families traveling together, may not be the more expensive option. Some guides specialize in history, art history, or archaeology, and some offer tours for younger travelers. Private guides will arrange your tickets and transportation or start the tour at your hotel, so you don’t have to worry about meeting points.

Tips for Choosing a Walking Tour in Rome:

  • Check the list of places visited carefully and whether the tour includes entrance to a site or just an external view.
  • The Colosseum , Forum , and Palatine are on a single ticket. If a tour includes the Colosseum and Forum, you won’t be able to go back in on your own to visit the Palatine without buying another ticket.
  • The basic Colosseum tickets do not include entrance to the underground. If seeing that is important to you, make sure you’re booking the right tour.
  • Most walking tours last about 3 hrs, and (group tours) won’t include stops. Walking is usually at a leisurely pace, but if you don’t think you’ll be able to stand for so long, consider a golf cart tour instead.

Conclusion: Take time to compare different tours and see what each one offers. Doublecheck if entrance to the sites you want to visit is included on the tour and in the price before booking.

Can You Walk Rome in a Day?

The historic center of Rome isn’t big, but there’s a lot to see. The Colosseum to the Vatican Museums would take you about an hour on foot and wouldn’t be the best use of your time.

If you only have a day in Rome , I suggest choosing either the Colosseum or the Vatican Museums. A tour of either site will take about 3 hours. Then you can enjoy the rest of the day walking around the center where Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, and Trevi Fountain are easy to walk between.

Conclusion: You can’t walk Rome in a day if you plan to visit the Vatican Museum and the Colosseum. Two days would be the minimum to do walking tours of both sites and to visit the most important monuments of the city center.

Are Night Walking Tours Worth Doing?

Rome is another kind of beautiful at night, with lights on many of the monuments, cooler temperatures, and no crowds. If you arrive in the afternoon and are ready to start exploring Rome, a night tour is a wonderful introduction to the Eternal City.

Most night tours will include the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, and possibly Castel Sant’Angelo and St. Peter’s on the other side of the river. However, some focus on darker parts of Rome’s history, like stories of the Inquisition.

Conclusion: Rome is worth seeing at night, and some companies offer tours that include some of the city’s most famous monuments. This is also an easy self-guided option with GoogleMaps.

Tips for a Great Walking Tour Experience

  • Don’t book a walking tour if you can’t walk at a leisurely pace for 3 hours. Think about doing a bus or golf cart tour instead.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. If you’re visiting any ancient sites, it’s best to wear closed shoes.
  • If your tour includes any churches, remember to respect the dress code and cover your shoulders and knees. Carry a light scarf in your bag so you’re ready any time you pass an interesting-looking church.
  • In the summer, bring sun cream, a sun hat or umbrella, and a water bottle with you. Rome has many water fountains where you can refill your bottle for free.
  • Avoid outdoor tours during the middle of the day in summer. Try and book tours at the beginning or end of the day when the weather is cooler.
  • In winter, bring an umbrella. Rome doesn’t have a lot of heavy rain, and tours will go ahead as long as the sites remain open.
  • Book tours in advance, especially if you want hard-to-get tickets, like Galleria Borghese or the Colosseum Underground, and make sure you understand the cancellation policy.
  • Finally, always check what other travelers have said in online reviews to know what to expect before you book.

There are over 25 attractions to see throughout the short excursion, so it promises to be action-packed, to say the least.

The tour kicks off at the Plaza de Panama, the park’s central point, and ends at the Botanical Building. The tour guide provides admission tickets for more than half of the sights, including the Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden and Balboa Park Visitor’s Center.

You’ll have plenty of time to roam freely when the tour is over. At this time you can also purchase tickets for additional attractions.

Start your uncanny journey at Heritage Park Row, where your guide will meet you. Drop into three chilling locations over the space of 1.5 hours, including La Casa de Estudillo (one of the city’s oldest buildings) and Whaley House Museum. Plus El Campo Santo Cemetery, where the spirits go to play.

We’d classify this as one of the scariest tours in San Diego. It’s only suitable for teens and adults because of the nature of the stories told. Disturbing, right?

Start things off at Headquarters at Seaport to learn about the Old Police Headquarters; you’ll even get to pop your head into the cells. Check out USS Midway Museum to hear about the story behind the military ship.
