Birdy is back flying high with her first concert for six years
- 12 May 2023

British singer Birdy toured for the first time in six years showcasing her new album âHeartbreakerâ.
âI wrote this album after the end of an affair,” she told her audience at the Hammersmith Apollo.
Her signature voice came with the shining light. The crowd was warmed up by her energetic and illusive purple and pink light after a long queue under rain.
She sounded shy, but her singing skills are more experienced than a few years ago.
The venue was full but many people chose to stand in the aisle. The crowd was silent during her first few songs.
Maybe itâs because we havenât heard her live for so long time.
Everyone focused deeply in the music, with warm applause after each song from the English singer-songwriter.
Even though I have listened to âSkinny loveâ many times, I still lost myself in her voice when she sang it in front of me.
The sound made me forgot my worries as I completely relaxed.
A young man, George, seating beside me was cheering for his friend, one of the singers in the band with Birdy.
He said: âI never heard about Birdy’s songs until my friend recommended me. I love her songs so much.
âI am so jealous of my friend that she can stay close to her.â
The show’s lighting was excellent with several changing colours to match the vibe of different songs.
Birdy won the music competition Open Mic UK in 2008 when she was only 12 years old. The song that gained the popularity was her cover version of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love”.
The singer started to learn piano aged just seven and started to write her own songs a year later.
Unlike other singers, Birdy didnât rush to gain popularity. She chose to slow down and find her own speciality.
Besides her original song, she delivered her take on âRunning up that hillâ. She changed the melody faster than the original.
This talented young singer showed all her musical skills to the audience with each song. This included piano, guitar and, of course, her voice.
She continued to perform âArmsâ as the first time to the public. I liked the way she explored new style through her new songs like âVoyagerâ and âRaincatchers.”
The concert ended with “Wings” with Birdy seated and playing the piano.
The audience was excited and stood waving their hands and showing their love to Birdy.

Birdy Shows She’s Just Getting Started When It Comes to Pop Music on New Album “Portraits”
Birdy begins her tour in New York at Irving Plaza before heading to the west coast to perform at San Franciscoâs August Music Hall and the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles. All three dates will serve as album release shows for her new record Portraits, which arrived on August 18th.
Before her performance at the Belasco Theater on Oct. 24 , alt-pop singer-songwriter Birdy has dropped her fifth full-length album, Portraits . The British artist broke out into the mainstream with her cover of Bon Iverâs âSkinny Loveâ in 2011, surpassing the original in more ways than one and skyrocketing Birdyâs career when she was 14.
Now, at 27 years old, sheâs still exploring different ways of approaching the formula that has worked for her, taking on new pop music styles while keeping it all her own.
Opening on a softer note, âRaincatchersâ predominantly features strings that add variety to the otherwise modern pop production, as evident by the drums. Briefly, 808s substitute the drums during the bridge before bringing every instrument back as they cascade around Birdyâs voice. As for the vocals, theyâre as sharp as ever. For someone who has already proven herself to be a capable singer, she knows how to hit the mark with no issue and often gleams more than the instrumentals.
Though thereâs the risk of losing cohesion for how often Portraits changes production styles, âHeartbreakerâ does a 180, proving thereâs no cause for worry. Along with shiny synths that depart from the strings, the heavy bass helps pack a punch behind Birdyâs already emotional performance and adds weight to a brief yet impressionable track.
None of the tracks waste time kicking into gear, as if time is always running out. The urgency helps since, judging by the lyrics, Birdy doesnât have forever to keep waiting for love. Not unless itâs âAutomatic,â which is among the albumâs simplistic yet complementing to her talents. Itâs also one of the shortest, making for a song that doesnât stop for a second and keeps things going.
Itâs easy to forget that Birdy has been making original material since she was 8, a long time even for someone like her whoâs accomplished so much before hitting 30. And in a period that wide, thereâs bound to be some bumps moving from album to album. That was the case for Portraits , which came out of emotional exhaustion after Young Heart .
âNaturally, I sought to make something that reflected the surge of energy inside meâŠand found a lot of freedom and joy venturing into a new sonic universe that I used to think I could never exist in authentically.â No matter how you look at it, Birdyâs universe is one of refinement, touching every corner of pop music with flying colors.

In a four-star review of the album, NME said: “âYoung Heartâ is a gorgeous album that perfectly captures the meandering journey that heartbreak takes you on. There are songs about sensing whatâs looming on the horizon (âWatching satellites lying in the grass/ I know our days are numbered,â Birdy sings on the shuffling âVoyagerâ). Interview with Birdy: This record was made for stage and to perform to people.
In English , Interviews by indiespect 18. August 2023
Birdy has just released «Portraits», her fifth studio album. It opens a new chapter for the singer. The changes are visible when looking at the artwork and music videos, but also musically Birdy ventures into new waters. The result is a wonderful album that never wears out even after listening to it over and over. An interview had already been planned when she visited Zurich back in April 2023. Due to illness (not Birdy's), however, it unfortunately did not come to the personal meeting. But the time has come to catch up on overdue conversation via Zoom.
Editors are:
Tom Smith (vocals, guitar, keys) Russell Leetch (bass) Ed Lay (drums) Justin Lockey (guitar) Elliott Williams (synths, guitar) Benjamin John Power (synths)
Indiespect: I’m in love with your new album. The dynamics between upbeat songs and ballads is truly amazing. It holds so much strength in it. It also feels like a major shift for you in terms of how it sounds. Was it difficult for you to step into a new direction? Birdy: No, it felt like a natural transition from the last record, which was just so the opposite. It was a almost a folk record and very sad and intimate. I spent five years doing that and I just couldn't do anything similar again. I thought, I need to do something completely different. Also because we were in the lockdown I had missed playing live so much. This record was made for stage and to perform to people. And to have energy and movement.
This record really was made for stage and to perform to people. And to have energy and movement. birdy on «Portraits»
Indiespect: It must have been quite a special tour for you earlier this year, because it was supposed to be the tour for your last album «Young Heart». Because of the pandemic it got shifted between to records. How did it feel to be in between two albums and go on tour? Birdy: That was strange, actually. I was sad to not get to tour Young Heart properly, because I think that it actually really came to life live. It was really beautiful. But I had already sort of moved on into this other world and then going back was like: who am I? I don't know which person I am on stage (laughs). I really enjoyed playing the old songs, like really old songs from the first record. Just because people hadn't heard them for quite a long time and we hadn't toured for six years. People got really emotional. They might have listened to the records when they were 15 and then we'd grown up together. I enjoyed that on the tour a lot.
© Thibault-Théodore
A new era for Birdy has begun â also visually.
Indiespect: Are you planning to come back to Switzerland with a proper tour for «Portraits»? Birdy: I'd say, yeah. The plan is to tour, but we're just trying to work out where to start and we may go to America for a bit. It's difficult because we've just done an European tour. But I think we will and it's going to be more Portraits focused, obviously. We definitely want to do more live.
Initially, we weren't going to release Paradise Calling and I felt like this is a really special song on the record and I wanted to give it a chance to just be in the world before the album came out. Birdy on the release of the album
Indiespect: The album release was set for July and was pushed back for a month. What's the reason behind that decision? Birdy: That's true. I wanted to share a bit more of the record before it came out. Initially, we weren't going to release Paradise Calling and I felt like this is a really special song on the record and I wanted to give it a chance to just be in the world before the album came out. It's also other stuff. There's lots of moving parts and it just made sense to put it there.
«Paradise Calling» comes with a very artistic music video. The dance will go down in Birdy history with no doubt.
Indiespect: I saw a live performance of «Paradise Calling» at St. Johns Church in Kingston and it was a really stripped down version. Will you play a more piano based version on stage? Birdy: When it's with the band, it will be the version that's on the record. But when I'm by myself, obviously I can't play it like that. But I was surprised because all the songs are written, either starting on a synth or writing to drums. But all of them work really well on the piano and they sound really nice. It's nice to have that version of them as well. Indiespect: In interviews you told that you are interested in arts in general, also in painting. Was the darker and more mystical look of this record your idea? Birdy: You mean the photography?
He put me in a wig and a dress for the first picture that we did. He took a picture and I thought: this doesn't even look like me. That's just not it. birdy on developing the new imagery
Indiespect: Also the music videos. The whole look and vibe that is attached to it. Birdy: In the beginning of making this record I was more inspired visually than musically. I had an idea of how it would look and it was a bit more gothic and kind of Dickensian [a British TV series] , actually. I was inspired by PJ Harvey and Patti Smith . Then I met Thibault-Théodore, who is the photographer for the album cover and all the imagery. I made him lots of paintings because I couldn't explain how I wanted it to look. He was like: I think I know what you mean (laughs) . Then he put me in a wig and a dress for the first picture that we did. He took a picture and I thought: this doesn't even look like me. That's just not it. He was like: okay, take the wig off. Then we did another picture and he projected the one with the wig on top of it. Indiespect: Ah, that's what became the album cover in the end! Birdy: I just thought, that is so clever and so beautiful that he had that in his head and how it would fit together. I feel like the projection looks like me as a child. In my eyes, it looks like when I was young. And then, there is me as an adult – and I love that.

Birdy not only writes beautiful songs but is also a skilled painter.
Indiespect: As an artist you released so many intimate and beautiful songs. Was it also a decision to create sort of a wall between you and the new Birdy because you didn't want to be seen as the sweet, fragile and vulnerable young singer anymore? Birdy: No, I don't think it was a decision. It's just not how I feel. I feel more confident in who I am and in my skin. So, that's just the feeling that's coming out. It's not that I don't want to be this fragile person anymore, maybe I'm just not so much anymore – which is nice. Sometimes the music was fragile, but I don't think I was actually as fragile as the music maybe seemed. I've always had a sort of inner strength that drives me, and I'm happy for it to be seen a bit more.
I don't think I was actually as fragile as the music maybe seemed. I've always had a sort of inner strength that drives me, and I'm happy for it to be seen a bit more. Birdy on her outside view
Indiespect: Once you said in an interview that you were quite serious when you were young because you were used to go on stage and to be surrounded by adults. In the meantime, you get to know your inner child as you grow older. Did you miss something because you were already on stage in you teenage years? Birdy: Yeah, I did. I was around lots of other people all the time and it's kind of scary. You don't really know who you are yet, and then you're in a very adult world. It's a lot of pressure to be putting out something that people are judging when you're still trying to find yourself. I took it all very seriously and thought this has got to be perfect. I was really scared of doing or saying the wrong thing. But now, looking back, I see that that's just what it takes to find out who you are. You have to make mistakes and do things that maybe aren't your favorite and then you work out what you love from that. Sometimes it was also hard not being with my family. But I'm also grateful to have the experience that I do at the age I am now. To have done five records and to have toured. That's really nice.

Indiespect: You are the daughter of an author and a concert pianist. Did you ever think about picking up another first instrument than the piano. Birdy: No, I wasn't allowed (laughs) . I just had a free piano teacher. I did learn the violin a little bit when I was young but then I gave up at thirteen. But no, listening to my mum play from when I was a baby, I was drawn to the piano and moved by it. I wanted to play and I couldn't keep away from it.
Birdy is 27 and just released her fifth studio record.
Indiespect: But as you said, you're not only writing your songs with the piano, right? Birdy: Yes, it kind of changes. Different instruments have different feelings and they make different songs. The guitar is much lighter and it's rhythmic compared to the piano. I always just end up writing sad songs on the piano (laughs). For this record I didn't really write with piano much at all. It was all synth and drum machines.
I always just end up writing sad songs on the piano. Birdy on her writing process
Peetree has returned to Birdy â and hopefully she lived happily ever after.
Indiespect: One last question that is not music related, just because that story was so sweet. You once adopted a little duck. Has there been another animal that you taught to swim or fly in the meantime? Birdy: No, she's a very special duck, I don't think there could be another. But she's still around. She went off into the wild and she came back this year and had babies. We've been feeding her every day and she comes into the house after being away for a year. She had eight ducklings, just the other day they hatched. There's five left, which is sad. They always get eaten. But she is doing well. (laughs) Indiespect: I'm so glad to hear that. Thank you for your time and all the best with your album. Birdy: Thank you so much. I hope we'll be back in Zurich, soon!

Birdy releases powerful new single ‘Raincatchers’ â listen
The singer is currently the bookies' favourite to represent the uk at eurovision 2023.
By Tom Skinner
Birdy has shared a new single called ‘Raincatchers’ – you can watch the official music video below. The song is the first preview of the Hampshire singer-songwriter’s upcoming fifth studio album, Portraits , which is due for release on July 14 ( pre-order/pre-save here ). Opening with an orchestral motif, the dramatic ‘Raincatchers’ sees Birdy – real name Jasmine Van den Bogaerde – lean into an ’80s alt-pop sound, complete with thunderous drums and a power vocal delivery. “ We used to be raincatchers/ And we couldn’t see what we were running from/ And you made me feel like/ Nothing really matters ,” Birdy sings in the chorus. The track arrives with a Max McLachlan-directed official video, which stars Birdy as well as Eleanor Hockley who plays the artist’s younger self. Tune in here:
Birdy is currently the bookmakers’ favourite act to represent the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, with odds of 6/4. In a statement, William Hill spokesperson Lee Phelps said (via NME ): “It will need to take a special effort to beat Sam Ryder ’s haul of 466 points last year, but our punters are beginning to feel confident in Birdy’s chances of spreading her wings in Liverpool.
“The 26-year-old is 6/4 with us to lead out the United Kingdom when this year’s Eurovision Song Contest takes place in May, making her the outright favourite to perform in front of the home crowd.” Other acts in the running to represent the UK include Rina Sawayama , Jessie Ware and Ellie Goulding . Meanwhile, Birdy is set to play a headline show at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith, London next month as part of her 2023 European tour. You can see the full schedule and find any remaining tickets here . The musician’s fourth and most recent record, Young Heart , came out back in 2021.

Birdy at the Hammersmith Apollo
Keeping Your Head Up, Deep End
As anticipation builds around the release of her forthcoming album, Portraits (out on 14 th July ), Birdy graces a starry-eyed audience at the Hammersmith Apollo with her ethereally evocative sound and powerful vocal delivery. Judging by the songs that she has already released and performed â particularly Raincatchers and Automatic â this new album will be another deeply emotional, albeit more upbeat journey, testament to the singer-songwriterâs musical evolution and lyrical prowess. Â
Birdy is demure and not fond of small talk, at one with her music; she seems more comfortable and at ease when she can simply connect with her audience through her songs, existing in the liminal spaces that precede and follow the applause. There is a charming and captivating quality to the way she performs: her voice remains strong throughout, and her hand movements, when she is not playing the piano, suggest that she might actually be casting a spell or trying to hypnotise everyone. If that was the case, it’s unlikely anyone would complain. Â
The night beings with Raincatchers , fresh off the yet-to-be released record. It’s 80s alt-pop sound with roaring drums, reminiscent of and inspired by Kate Bush, but still all Birdy. In fact, while the work is uncharacteristically up-tempo, especially if compared to other, more stripped-down tracks from older albums, her signature resides within the lyrics, which deliver a deeply honest story of loss and rebirth, the present self that wishes to go back in time to guide the younger self and pull the inner child out of the deep well of adulthood. “We used to be rain-catchers / And we couldnât see what we were running from / You made me feel like / Nothing really matters”. Â
The artist also played a few tracks from previous albums Beautiful Lies and Young Heart, respectively released in 2016 and 2021, including the heartbreaking Deep End and Young Heart. While performing slower, more melancholic songs like these, Birdy demonstrates a particular and unique talent: she knows exactly when, during the moments of quietness, it is time to let her voice soar and pull her audience back in, tugging at their heartstrings. And she always succeeds. Â
Her iconic cover of Skinny Love also remains just as powerful and impactful as the first time she performed it, and it will most likely always be a crowd-pleaser.
The very last offering of the night is, rather appropriately, the haunting Wings, from her second album Fire Within. At this point, people are dancing and standing; everyone seems to feel the same urge to move and sing along to the up-tempo chorus, âOh, lights go down / In the moment, we’re lost and found / I just wanna be by your side / If these wings could flyâ. These final minutes feel like a celebration a sorts, with every single person wanting to take part in honouring an incredibly talented young woman who can bathe in sunshine without worrying about her wings melting. Missy elliot, trending on billboard.
“This is an incredible time in my life as I am experiencing so many milestone ‘firsts.’ Being the FIRST female Hip Hop artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and now going out on my FIRST headline tour,” Elliott said in a statement about the 24-city tour co-produced by Live Nation and Elliott’s longtime manager Mona Scott-Young. “Fans have been asking me to tour forever but I wanted to wait until I felt the time was right because I knew if I was ever going to do it, I had to do it big, and I had to do it with family! So get ready to be taken OUT OF THIS WORLD with me, Busta Rhymes, Ciara, and Timbaland! We can’t wait to share this experience with the fans!”
In keeping with Elliott’s legendarily out-there music videos, the tour announce was accompanied by a short teaser video helmed by another one of Missy’s frequent collaborators, director Dave Meyers. “In 2024, these three icons come together to show you something you’ve never seen before,” Elliott says in voiceover in the clip in which she, Busta and Ciara emerge from the spacecraft.
In an additional statement about her client’s first-ever headlining tour, Scott-Young said, “Missy has always been an iconic groundbreaker and continuously pushes herself to be bolder and go where she has never been before – and surprisingly, one of those places is headlining her own tour! For decades, fans and peers worldwide have clamored for Missy to tour and they’re finally going to get what they’ve been asking for as she teams up with Ciara, Busta, and longtime partner-in-rhyme Timbaland, to deliver a start-to-finish, nonstop, high-octane, OUT OF THIS WORLD concert experience. This will be one for the books, so trust me, you don’t want to miss it!”
Tickets for the tour will go on sale first through a Verizon presale that kicks off on Tuesday (April 9) beginning at 10 a.m. local time through Thursday (April 11) at 10 p.m. local time; click here for more details. Following additional presales throughout the week, the general onsale for the tour will begin on Friday (April 12) at 10 a.m. local time here .

Legendary rock band announces new tour dates after singerâs injury
A fractured larynx and vocal cord damage are no joke for a hard-rock singer to recover from. Especially a 76-year-old frontman with a still-big voice, like Steven Tyler .
Nearly a year after Aerosmith put the brakes on a long-gestating farewell tour just a few shows in after Tyler injured his voice during a Sept. 9, 2023 show at a New York arena, the bandâs about to be, ahem, back in the saddle.
The âPeace Out Tourâ will resume September 20 in Pittsburgh. The 40-date arena tour runs through February 26 in Buffalo and includes a New Yearâs Eve show in the bandâs hometown of Boston. Complete list of tour dates at aerosmith.com .
Aerosmithâs decades of hits include âDream On,â âWalk This Way,â âSweet Emotion,â âBack in the Saddle,â âJanieâs Got A Gun,â âCrazyâ and âI Donât Want To Miss A Thing.â
The band features Tyler, guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford and bassist Tom Hamilton.
Unlike many classic rock groups, Aerosmithâs original lineup remained intact through most of their history. However in recent years, original drummer Joey Kramer has been replaced onstage by John Douglas, Kramerâs former drum tech. Buck Johnson , an Alabama native who also tours with Brother Cane and Hollywood Vampires, is Aerosmithâs touring keyboardist/backing vocalist .
Blues-rockers The Black Crowes , known for â90s hits like âJealous Againâ and âRemedy,â are the support act for all dates of Aerosmithâs âPeace Out Tour.â
The Black Crowes previously opened for Aerosmith on the Crowesâ first-ever big tour, back in 1990. Led by brothers Chris and Rich Robinson , on vocals and guitar, respectively, Black Crowes recently released âHappiness Bastards,â their first album of all-original songs in 15 years .
Aerosmithâs classic albums include their 1973 self-titled debut, 1975âČs âToys in the Attic,â 1976 release âRocks,â 1987 comeback LP âPermanent Vacationâ and â93 mega-seller âGet a Grip.â Aerosmithâs most recent album was âMusic from Another Dimensionâ from 2012.
