The Stockport outfit will take their Ribbon Around The Bomb album on the road with dates which included FOUR shows at Manchester's O2 Apollo and a date at London's O2 Academy Brixton.

Taking to social media, they said: "We’re beyond excited to announce that we’ll be heading back out on tour this November/December! We haven’t played a tour with as many dates as this for quite some time and there’s a few places in there we’ve never performed in, which is gonna make this extra special… we can’t wait to see you! Love Tom, Joe, Charlie, Josh & Myles!"

Demand for their Manchester O2 Apollo shows has been so high, they've now added a third and fourth show at the venue. The third night on Saturday 10th December has also sold out, but tickets for Sunday 11th are on sale now.

Since forming in 2013, Blossoms have enjoyed widespread success and acclaim for their synth-forward blend of Britpop and indie rock. In 2014, they released their first single, You Pulled a Gun on Me , and went on to play The Great Escape and Reading & Leeds that summer. Blossoms released the track Charlemagne in 2015, which broke into the top 100 of the UK singles chart.

Their 2016 eponymous debut topped the album charts for two consecutive weeks and went on to earn the band BRIT Award and Mercury Prize nominations, while 2018’s Cool Like You charted at No.4 on the UK albums chart, spawning the anthemic singles I Can’t Stand It, There’s a Reason Why (I Never Returned Your Calls) and How Long Will This Last?

The following two years saw Blossoms tour sold-out venues and packed festival stages across the UK and Europe. They played their biggest gig to date, a triumphant hometown show at Stockport County’s Edgeley Park, in summer 2019.

Blossoms released their third album, Foolish Loving Spaces , in January 2020. Produced in Liverpool and topping the UK albums chart, it celebrates love in all of its many forms and features the hits Your Girlfriend and If You Think This Is Real Life .

Their double album, In Isolation / Live From The Plaza Theatre, Stockport , arrived in October 2020 featuring original music created during lockdown along with a recording from the launch show for Foolish Loving Spaces early in the year. Blossoms played a livestream from London’s O2 Academy Brixton on 3 December 2020 to support the new material.

The band confirmed an appearance at the 2021 edition of TRNSMT Festival. On 4 March 2021, Blossoms also announced rescheduled dates for their extensive UK tour in late August and September 2021.

In other news, Blossoms covered The Human League’ s classic single ‘Don’t You Want Me’ during their headline set at Truck Festival earlier this month. Check out footage of the moment here.

he band topped the bill at the four-day Oxfordshire event on July 21.

Towards the end of their 18-track set, Blossoms treated the crowd to their own spin on the 1981 anthem ‘Don’t You Want Me’ and have since shared footage of the cover on Instagram. “Crowd was boss!!!” they wrote in the caption.

The group’s rendition of The Human League’s biggest hit came ahead of their main set closer ‘My Favourite Room’, which was followed by a two-track encore of ‘There’s A Reason Why (I Never Returned Your Calls)’ and ‘Charlemagne’.

Last month, Tom Ogden and co. shared a cover of Harry Styles’ recent single ‘As It Was’ as part of Apple Music’s Home Session series. It came after they performed Spice Girls’ ‘Spice Up Your Life’ with Mel C at Glastonbury 2022 .

The five-piece released their ‘Isolation Covers’ album back in 2020. It featured new versions of songs by the likes of Frank Ocean ,  The Coral and Tame Impala that the band had recorded in the first COVID lockdown.

Blossoms’ fourth studio album, ‘Ribbon Around The Bomb’ , came out this April. The group’s new ‘Live At Sefton Park’ collection arrived last week as part of a ‘super deluxe’ edition of their latest record.

Biographies

Hailing from Arizona, US, Gin Blossoms are a power pop/rock band who brought forth a lighter, pop-oriented sound, acting as an antidote to the gloom of the grunge era that dominated alternative rock in the 90s.

Stockport five-piece Blossoms are hitting the road for an extensive string of dates across the UK and Ireland later this year.

The band will travel around England in November and December, including two close-to-hometown shows nights at Manchester’s O2 Apollo, and one night at London’s O2 Academy Brixton. There will also be dates in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, as well as a show in Dublin.

The tour follows a host of festivals that Blossoms have played this year. They’ve headlined Y Not? and Truck festivals, and also played a cracking set at Glastonbury which featured a surprise cameo from Mel C for a rendition of Spice Up Your Life. They’ve toured as The Killers’ support as well.

Blossoms dropped their number one album Ribbon Around The Bomb in April, and before they did so, they popped into Virgin Radio to play an amazing live set on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show with Sky. Their set included single The Sulking Poet, from the new album.

The band’s most recent album isn’t their only number one record. In fact, two of their previous LPs, 2016’s Blossoms and 2020’s Foolish Loving Spaces, hit the top spot as well.

Fan presale, however, begins a couple of days earlier, at 9am on Wednesday.

Blossoms announce huge show with Shed Seven, Inhaler and more

The biggest concert of their career

Blossoms will perform the biggest concert of their career so far on next year’s August Bank Holiday weekend.

The 30,000-capacity show takes place at Manchester’s Wythenshawe Park – just 15 minutes from Blossom’ native Stockport - on Sunday 25th August 2024.

The mightily impressive line-up on the day also features Inhaler, Shed Seven, The K’s, Seb Lowe and TTRRUUCES.

TTRRUUCES features singer Findlay who performs on Blossoms’ current single 'To Do List (After The Breakup)' , which is inspired by Rupi Kaur's poem of the same name.

Tickets to Blossoms at Wythenshawe Park go on sale from Absolute Radio Tickets at 10am on Friday 10th November.

Blossoms frontman Tom Ogden enthuses: 'Headlining our biggest show yet at Wythenshawe Park is going to be THE moment of our career so far for us.

“It makes me think of me and Joe going to watch Oasis and The Stone Roses at Heaton Park back when we were teenagers and how important these big summer Manchester shows are to people.

“It made us want to be in a band, affected what we wore and changed our lives forever. To misquote Dorothy, 'Lads, I've a feeling we're not on Oldham Street anymore!”

See Blossoms at the following show:

Birmingham cherry blossoms draw spectators and photographers

  • Published 23 March 2023

Blossoming trees by Oozells Square

People have been gathering to enjoy and photograph blossoming trees which have brought a flourish of pink to a city centre.

The popular cherry blossoms can be seen in Oozells Square, outside Birmingham's Ikon Gallery.

"Brindleyplace blossom. Beautiful bab," tweeted Stacey Barnfield, a photographer and artist who was among people who shared images.

"It's that time of year again, when Oozells Square, outside of @ikongallery bursts to life with the most perfect pink blossom," Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust said on Twitter.

The number of people photographing the trees may also have been boosted by Brindleyplace, which is running a competition looking for the best pictures of the square in bloom.

The organisation, which promotes the business and leisure estate, said three images would be chosen to be printed, framed and displayed at the Ikon Gallery. The closing date is 11 April.

The square has also been chosen by the National Trust among locations for a Blossom Picnic. People are invited to enjoy their lunch among the blooms on Saturday 1 April.

The following day, the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group will perform a free concert in the square at 15:00 BST.

Japan’s Cherry Blossom Boom Forces Tour Operators to Adjust

Dawit Habtemariam

March 25th, 2024 at 12:02 PM EDT

Tour operators are managing cherry blossom tourism as Japan experiences a tourism boom.

Dawit Habtemariam

Tour operators are adjusting their operations amid Japan’s tourism boom during the popular cherry blossom season.

“We’ve moved a lot of our clients away from the idea of going during cherry blossom and to let them know how congested and challenging things continue to be,” said Kelly Torrens, vice president of Kensington Tours.

From late March to early May, sakura, i.e. cherry blossoms, begin blooming in Japan, starting in the southwest regions. It’s one of Japan’s busiest travel seasons. Kyoto’s parks are some of the most popular for cherry blossom sightseers.

Some tour operators have been spreading tourists out to less visited areas. “There are different smaller parks that we can visit that are just as beautiful, but might not have the same number of tourists visiting,” said Matt Berna, president of Americas for Intrepid Travel.

With high demand, some tour operators have had to hire staff earlier. “This year, KKday had to make earlier arrangements for buses and guides in consideration of the shortage of manpower,” said Ayako Kozono, senior manager for public relations at Japan-based tour operator KKday.

Staffing was a major issue during the cherry blossom season last year. Due to its long lockdown, many English-speaking staff left the industry and have been slow to return, causing service challenges.

“The destination really wasn’t ready. The supply chain was a mess,” said Kensington’s Torrens. “We know that no one on the ground in Japan wants to experience anything like that again.”

Japan Was Already Expensive Before Cherry Blossom Season

Tourism to Japan is booming. Japan had 2.8 million visitors in February, up 7.1% from February 2019, according to Japan’s National Tourism Organization .

@beautifuldestinations It’s almost time for cherry blossoms in Japan! 🌸✨ 📽 @1min.traveller, @cinematictokyo, @linejka 📍 Japan #cherryblossom   #sakura   #japan #beautifuldestinations #travel ♬ original sound – Beautiful Destinations – Beautiful Destinations

Demand this year has been pushing costs up. “Due to excess demand, bus and guide prices have risen so much from last year that it is difficult to pass the increase on to the tour price as it is, which is a distressing situation,” said Kozon.

“The cost for us as an operator has gone up across the entire year, across Japan, but particularly around cherry blossom season,” said Berna.

Tourists Annoy Some Japanese Locals

Over the past few months, there’s also been an uptick in local frustration with tourists. There’s been a lot of news coverage of bad manners from tourists, said Kozon.

“Some areas are actually getting so busy that the government’s looking at closing off access for certain times a year to residents only,” said Berna. “People were literally trying to get people’s front of their homes and taking photos.”
