The Charities

The Infinity and Ovation crew values the work undertaken by charities that benefit and help our community grow and thrive.

Together with our media partner, Hour Detroit Magazine, we’ve played a key role in raising visibility, and much appreciated funds, for several new, emerging, and existing Metro Detroit-based nonprofits during our Summer Cruise Series season.

This year, we are partnering with organizations that touch a variety of causes from advocacy groups to cultural institutions.

While we earmark a portion of each ticket price to benefit these worthy groups, we also hope you’ll join us in the spirit of giving by making an additional donation. There’s easy to follow instructions when you purchase your tickets.

Discover the Raven Lounge: The Oldest Blues Club in Detroit

Story by leslie cieplechowicz.

Located on the eastside of Detroit, in a white, simple building with an aging marquee, is a business seeped with the musical history of the city, the Raven Lounge and Restaurant at 5145 Chene Street. The living room club, with its homey atmosphere, sparkly, colorful tinsel dangling around the stage, and hip painted portraits of the owners along with one of B.B. King adorning the wood paneled walls, is the oldest blues bar in Detroit and is still weathering the city’s everchanging landscape. In 2021, National Geographic voted the club as one of must see places to visit in Detroit.

On a rainy Thursday night in June, Michelle B croons out the melodies accompanied by Ben Moore and the Blues Express singing such favorites as Tennessee Whiskey and At Last. “Wherever you want to be, music will take you there,” she tells the crowd. Opened in 1966 by Sam Watts, the lounge was sold to the current owners, Tommy and Theresa Stephens in 1993 by Sam’s wife Myrtle after Sam passed away in 1992. Tommy has been a regular at the lounge since 1968 and purchased it after working 33 years with Detroit public schools. The club has a chill vibe and creates spellbinding blue’s enchantment on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9 pm till close with a $10 cover on Friday and Saturday, free on Thursday. The clientele ranges from the regulars decked out in stylish clothes to musical artists who might take to the stage after a drink to young hipsters looking for a funky place with authenticity to hang out. The drink of choice at the lounge is the Long Island Tea which pairs well with its soul food cuisine such as catfish with fresh greens. Ben Moore and the Blues Express play every Thursday night. Moore, the bass player, has been part of the scene for the past 30 years. This evening, Alice Offley a British singer and song writer coming all the way from London England jumps on stage and belts out a melody. The lounge did not start out as a blue’s club but at a polka dancehall in the late 1800s when polish immigrants came to the neighborhood. It is located in what is now Poletown. With the automobile revolution, and the Great Migration in 1916, African Americans from the south began populating the neighborhood bringing their culture of music and cuisine with them. In the neighborhood next door, Paradise Valley, along the main throughfare of Hastings Street, nightclubs, gambling joints, and bars popped up and a blues and jazz scene blossomed. The vibrant area, whose cultural impact on music rivaled New Orleans and Harlem, attracted such music greats at Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald and created such notable artists as Big Maceo (Major Merriweather) and John Lee Hooker. Many films have used the Raven as a location including the Oscar nominated documentary, “Detropia” and the movie “Low Winter Sun.” The unofficial motto of the Raven Lounge is come as a customer, leave as family. The 24 year veteran bartender, Kathy Davis, is happy to serve up a drink. The Raven is an awesome place to hear some incredible blues while dancing and swaying through the night.

Man charged in shooting of 5 men following fight over parking space at a Detroit bar

  • Copy Link copied

DETROIT (AP) — A 32-year-old Detroit man has been charged in a shooting that wounded five people in what police say was a dispute over a parking space outside a blues club.

Damond Hunter faces five counts of assault with intent to murder, five counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and 11 counts of using a firearm during a felony.

He was arraigned Saturday following his arrest April 10 at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. His bond was set at $5 million.

An argument started about 2:45 a.m. on March 29 outside the westside Detroit club and had become physical when one man involved pulled a gun from a vehicle and fired shots into a crowd , according to police.

Five men ages 33 to 48 were struck. The gunman then drove away. Seven or eight shell casings were found in the parking lot.

Police said it appears only one of the shooting victims was involved in the fight. The others were bystanders.

“I have seen countless arguments escalate into serious shooting incidents over the most trivial things,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Thursday in a release. “Any time a weapon is introduced, it never ends well — most times tragically.”

(AP Photo/Thomas Peipert, File)

Hunter’s defense attorney, Arnold Weiner, agreed with Worthy and said Thursday that “when you introduce a weapon into an argument, things can go wrong.”

“In this case, it was a classic case of self-defense,” Weiner said of the charges against his client. “He was protecting others, his cousins, from being shot.”

Hunter’s probable cause conference is scheduled for Friday. A preliminary examination is scheduled for April 29.

GM trucks drive Q1 profitability as EVs begin to gain traction

blues cruise detroit

Detroit — General Motors Co.'s strong North American business, powered by robust truck sales, drove the automaker to beat expectations in the first quarter and prepare for more electric vehicle launches — even though the road to strong EV demand is proving rough and uncertain.

The Detroit automaker delivered net income of $3 billion in the January-through-March quarter on revenue of $43 billion, outperforming Wall Street expectations. GM also increased its adjusted earnings guidance for the year to the range of $12.5 billion to $14.5 billion, up from $12 billion to $14 billion. GM now expects its net income for the year will total between $10.1 billion and $11.5 billion, besting previous guidance of $9.8 billion to $11.2 billion.

Executives remained positive for the year ahead now that contract talks with the United Auto Workers are behind them and their ability to launch more EVs without battery module supply interruptions are resolved. GM's launch of several new EVs this year comes as the pace of EV sales slows, but executives say they will adapt and follow customers through the transition because GM believes it possesses such flexibility, thanks to its lineup of internal combustion engine vehicles.

Investors cheered GM's results, bidding shares 4% higher to $45.10. Analysts at Wedbush Securities, including Dan Ives, wrote in a Tuesday note: "This morning GM delivered March results which came in very strong putting together another solid performance well above the Street on the top and bottom line as the company focuses heavily on profitability with expenses continuing to be a big focus. This was a major 'prove me' quarter for GM and shows the long-awaited turnaround now appears to be underway for Barra & Co."

Meanwhile, EV rival Tesla Inc. missed analyst estimates with a 9% drop in revenue, the steepest decline since 2012. Ford Motor Co. releases its first-quarter earnings on April 24. Stellantis NV releases first-quarter shipments and revenues on April 30.

Refocusing on profit

After spending record amounts in recent years to fuel the transition to EVs, GM says it now is refocusing on its core business to deliver a stronger, more profitable business.

"Now that the foundation is largely built and we're starting to see results, our focus has turned back to driving free cash flow through enhanced profitability and capital discipline," CEO Mary Barra told investors. "Finding ways to spend less for the same results and with an unwavering focus on the customer."

GM has been cutting costs in automotive engineering, marketing spending and other areas to reach a $2 billion cost reduction goal. It's on track to hit the cost-reduction target by the end of this year after saving another $300 million in the first quarter, CFO Paul Jacobson told investors.

Jacobson noted GM's "consistent pricing trends" also helped in the first quarter "driven by demand for our products and a disciplined go-to-market strategy that prioritizes profitability and margins. And so far in April, we've seen pricing remain relatively consistent," adding that there will be pricing headwinds to come.

GM North America booked $3.8 billion in pretax earnings in the quarter and reported losses of $10 million at GM International and $106 million in China.

The strong North American results come after GM saw a 1.5% decline in overall sales year over year in the first quarter as fleet deliveries slipped 23%. GM's U.S. dealers sold 594,233 new vehicles in the first three months of this year compared with 603,208 a year ago. The automaker noted its retail sales, or sales to individual customers, increased 6%.

It attributed the sales decline to the drop in fleet deliveries, which were affected by temporary production constraints on midsize pickups and vans. Still, GM's internal combustion engine pickups had their best first quarter since 2020 with 197,000 sold.

"The U.S. retail industry experienced a slight mix shift away from the full-size truck segment during the quarter," Jacobson said. "However, we increased our volume and share with lower incentives than our competitors, which speaks to our strong truck franchises and our customer loyalty."

Bank of America Research Analyst John Murphy maintained a "buy rating" on GM following its quarterly report because "the company remains a leader among the industry in its Core to Future transition. More specifically, GM's ongoing execution and strength in its Core business continues to enable the company to make investments in EVs, AVs, and other areas to future-proof the business, while continuing to return value to shareholders."

Increasing EV production

With a battery module supply constraint behind them, GM is moving forward with launching several new EVs. The automaker has increased its battery module production by 300% in the last six months, Barra said.

The Chevrolet Equinox EV will hit dealer lots this quarter. In March, Chevrolet took the all-electric Blazer off a stop sale after halting sales of the new SUV for more than two months while fixing a software issue. Deliveries of the Silverado EV RST are expected to begin by mid-2024.

GM will have more affordable trims of the Equinox, Blazer and Silverado EV in the second half of the year, which is also when Cadillac will expand its EV lineup with the Escalade IQ and Optiq. The automaker is aiming to build and wholesale between 200,000 and 300,000 Ultium EVs in North America in 2024 even though the pace of EV demand has been waning.

"We're always going to be responsive to the customer, but we do believe that we're going to be in that 200,000 to 300,000 range," said Barra, adding that the company is focused on not overbuilding while maintaining margins and price.

Cruise moving forward, concerns abroad

GM expenses were $400 million for its self-driving unit Cruise LLC, down from the $800 million in the fourth quarter of last year as a result of halting services and a number of changes made following a pedestrian crash last fall on the streets of San Francisco. Cruise expenses for the year are expected to be $1.7 billion, Jacobson said.

After months of handling concerns about its safety standards, GM is reintroducing a small fleet of autonomous vehicles in select cities starting with Phoenix.

"We are engaging frequently with regulators and stakeholders and building trust as we regain momentum," Barra said. "Safety will remain front and center and will guide our progress."

Excluding China, GM's pretax profit in GM International would have been $100 million, down from $150 million the previous year. Jacobson told investors this was driven by "lower volume in South America and strategic decisions to protect margins."

New products and more cost efficiencies should improve profitability in the second quarter, he added. GM's China income was down since the company "lowered production to balance dealer inventory levels," said Jacobson, adding he expected a return to profitability in the second quarter.

GM and other automakers have struggled in China as the domestic automakers there have taken over market share, but Barra told investors there's still a place for GM in the world's largest auto market.

"Clearly, the market has shifted, and the landscape has shifted with the capability of the Chinese OEMs," she said. "But we still think there's a role and a place for GM to play with luxury premium."

AFL round seven: Dockers beat Bulldogs to make top eight, Geelong stay unbeaten but count injury cost, Crows cruise to big win over Kangaroos

Sport AFL round seven: Dockers beat Bulldogs to make top eight, Geelong stay unbeaten but count injury cost, Crows cruise to big win over Kangaroos

Fremantle Dockers are into the top eight after they kicked clear in the final stages to seal a 24-point win over the Western Bulldogs in Perth.

Josh Treacy and Bailey Banfield kicked three goals each for the Dockers, the latter sealing victory with a thumping kick from 50 in the final two minutes. The win ends a three-game losing streak for the home side.

Nat Fyfe was fantastic in the middle for the Dockers, but even his efforts have paled into comparison to what Caleb Serong is producing.

Serong set a club record for most possessions when he racked up 46 disposals against Brisbane in round one.

And the 23-year-old set another one, this time for clearances, against the Bulldogs on Saturday when he tallied a whopping 17 from his 37 disposals.

"It's just a normal game for Caleb tonight," coach Justin Longmuir joked.

"It's a phenomenal effort to get 17 clearances and even more so against that midfield … that's outstanding and exceptional.

"I'm not sure where it sits in the AFL. I haven't seen that number too often, but he's a pro.

"He continues to work on all aspects of his game. His ground ball is up there with the best in the comp.

"He trusts himself because of all the work he's done, and I'm just really proud of him as a person.

"You see him go to work every day and the example he sets for his teammates as a young player and young leader is great."

The Bulldogs's loss was further soured by an injury to livewire forward Cody Weightman, who was subbed out with a suspected dislocated elbow after a hard landing from an aerial contest.

Earlier, the unbeaten Geelong survived a late surge from Carlton to win by 13 points at the MCG, but their captain Patrick Dangerfield will miss time after injuring his hamstring.

And Adelaide Crows won their second game of the year, beating the Kangaroos in Hobart.

Check out the match reports from all three games:

  • Crows crush the Kangaroos in Hobart
  • Geelong 7-0 as the Cats outlast Carlton
  • Dockers bounce back to beat Bulldogs, get into top eight

Cooper Simpson and Patrick Voss lead the Dockers off the ground after a win over the Bulldogs.

That wraps up a big day of football where injuries played a major part with Patrick Dangerfield and Cody Weightman likely to miss some time.

Tomorrow we are back to finish the round, beginning with the Inter-coastal showdown between the Suns and the Eagles at Carrara starting at 1pm AEST.

Then we wrap things up with Hawthorn hosting the Sydney Swans at the MCG.

Thanks for joining us today, stay with us on ABC for any fallout from today's games and injuries - and we'll see you back here for Sunday football.

Good night.

Tough night for Western Bulldogs

Was last week a false dawn for the Bulldogs?

Losses to Geelong and Essendon had put them under pressure before their big win over St Kilda.

They had their moments tonight, particularly through the likes of Bailey Dale and Caleb Daniel after he was subbed on for Cody Weightman.

That elbow problem keeps happening for the livewire forward. Hopefully he won't be out for too long.

That was a tough loss for Luke Beveridge's men, and they will be looking to steady with a win over Hawthorn next weekend.

Fremantle 14.11 (95) def Western Bulldogs 10.11 (71)

Bailey Banfield was the unlikely hero as Fremantle posted a thrilling 24-point AFL win over the Western Bulldogs at Perth Stadium.

A week after kicking 0.4 in a shock western derby loss to West Coast, Banfield kicked two clutch goals in the dying minutes on Saturday night to secure the 14.11 (95) to 10.11 (71) win in front of 45,931 fans.

The result snapped a run of three straight losses for the Dockers, and improved their season record to 4-3.

Banfield finished the match with three goals from 22 disposals.

The Bulldogs trailed by just six points with a little over four minutes remaining.

Banfield's 45m set shot gave Fremantle a 12-point buffer.

Then with less than two minutes remaining, Banfield nailed a tough 50m shot near the boundary line to secure the victory, with Michael Walters' late goal adding icing on the cake.

Fremantle veteran Nat Fyfe wound back the clock with 37 disposals, seven clearances and a goal, while Caleb Serong (37 disposals, 17 clearances) was also a monster in the middle.

Dockers debutant Cooper Simpson, who was subbed into the game in the second quarter, showed flashes of brilliance and finished with three score assists.

Fremantle spearhead Josh Treacy was superb with three goals from eight marks.

Bulldogs utility Bailey Dale continued his resurgence with 30 disposals and two goals, while Sam Darcy kicked three goals.

Liam Jones was a spoiling machine in defence for the Bulldogs.

Bulldogs forward Rhylee West could be in trouble for a high shepherd that struck Brandon Walker in the head, resulting in the Dockers defender being assessed in the change rooms for concussion.

The Bulldogs suffered a blow before the match when midfielder Tom Liberatore, who was due to return from concussion, was ruled out through illness.

The loss was compounded when forward Cody Weightman appeared to dislocate his left elbow again when he landed hard from a marking contest in the first quarter.

What's next for the Dockers and Bulldogs

  • Rd 8: Richmond (MCG)
  • Rd 9: Sydney Swans (Perth Stadium)
  • Rd 10: St Kilda (Docklands)
  • Rd 11: Collingwood (Perth Stadium)
  • Rd 12: Melbourne (Alice Springs)

Western Bulldogs:

  • Rd 8: Hawthorn (Docklands)
  • Rd 9: Richmond (MCG)
  • Rd 10: GWS (Sydney Showground)
  • Rd 11: Sydney Swans (Docklands
  • Rd 12: Collingwood (Docklands)

Caleb Serong breaks a record for Fremantle

Nat fyfe back to his best for freo.

That win was driven by many people - including Josh Treacy as previously mentioned.

But we can't go past dual Brownlow medallist and former Dockers skipper Nat Fyfe.

He was one from the opening bounce and was involved in everything. 37 disposals (18 contested), four tackles, seven clearances, and 10 score involvements.

What a game.

FT: Fremantle beats Western Bulldogs by 24 points

It was tight, it was tough, it wasn't pretty in stages, but the Dockers won't care.

Another goal from Michael Walters is the cherry on top in the final minute, and as the siren sounds the crowd rises as one.

The Dockers end a three-game losing streak, and they will be in the eight at the end of the round!

That's a vital win for Freo, especially after last week's disastrous loss in the Western Derby.

Bailey Banfield wins it for Fremantle!

They've done it!

The Dockers went forward again, and Bailey Banfield marked inside 50. He runs around, kicks from the arc and hoists a swinging kick the drifts in from the left ... and falls through!

Freo leads by three goals! They will get the win here.

Huge game from Josh Treacy

If the Dockers get over the line here, a lot of the credit will go to Josh Treacy.   Aside from his vital goals, his eight marks have been precious for the Dockers, helping them control the football in the late stages here.

Bailey Banfield kicks a vital goal for Fremantle

Huge moment!

Debutant Cooper Simpson is playing a blinder, he gets the ball down the wing, takes his time and instead of going for glory or the square, he spots up Bailey Banfield in space.

He marks inside 50 and kicks the goal! The Dockers lead by 12 points!

Marcus Bontempelli back on the ground

The Bulldogs skipper spent a long time on the bench, and there weren't opportunities to get him back on, but he's there now for teh last five minutes.

Nothing in it in final stages

The teams are getting tired, the errors are coming, and there is one straight kick in it with seven minutes left.

Chance for Patrick Voss

What a move for the Dockers!

Josh treacy took a great contested mark in the middle.

he handballs to first-gamer Cooper Simpson, who goes long to his fellow debutant Patrick Voss - he marks inside 50!

But misses the chance to kick his second.

Six points in it with 10 minutes left.

Chance missed for Freo

Pressure is on here!

The Dockers stream forward after a smother from Tom Emmett.

They went down the left then centred the ball for Luke Jackson - it went too far for him, but he chased down the Bulldogs defender. Out on the full!

Jackson kicks from deep in the pocket - it misses.

Five points the lead.

Aaron Naughton kicks a goal for the Bulldogs

The Dogs answer!

It's to-and-fro in the final quarter, the ball goes to a contest deep inside 50, it goes over the back and Aaron Naughton snaps on the run from a narrow angle.

It's there!

back to four points!

Tim English misses another shot for the Bulldogs

The visitors attack looking to answer quickly.

Tim English marks in the left forward pocket - but it's another missed set shot for the Bulldogs!

Michael Frederick gets the early goal for Fremantle

A tight beginning to the final term ends with the Bulldogs under pressure - Freo get the ball back on the wing and James Aish finds Michael Frederick inside 50.

He marks and kicks the goal - Dockers lead by 11!

3QT: Fremantle leads Western Bulldogs by five points

The Bulldogs have missed so many chances in this quarter, but Sam Darcy marks in the final seconds, and the son of a gun nails it after the siren!

The Dockers lead by five points at the final change.

Marcus Bontempelli has a bad miss for the Bulldogs

The Bulldogs had a big attack deep in time on, Marcus Bontempelli took a mark close to goal.

He ran in from about 15 metres out - AND HE MISSES!

You'd never have seen that coming from the Bulldogs skipper.

Will that be costly in the end?
