I visited Cappadocia for 4 days and traveled from Istanbul. So I know what a good tour should contain and look like.

I’ve picked the 9 best tours from Istanbul to Cappadocia for you. So read about my insights and opinion, and choose the right one.

My Top Pick 2-Day Tour To Cappadocia

My Top Pick 3-Day Tour To Cappadocia

excursion istanbul cappadoce

This 3-day tour from Istanbul to Cappadocia (without flights) gives you a full experience.

It includes airport transfers , a stay in a cave hotel , a hot air balloon ride , meals, Red Tour , and Green Tour .

Important Factors To Consider When Choosing A Tour From Istanbul To Cappadocia

When choosing the right tour of Cappadocia, I recommend considering a few factors . So here are my top tips for what to think of when booking a tour from Istanbul to Cappadocia:

  • list of things to do in Cappadocia
  • Red/Blue/Green Tour
  • number of days
  • hot air balloon experience
  • cave hotel accommodation
  • free time during the tour
  • transportation

List Of Things To Do In Cappadocia

The most important thing is to clearly define what exactly you expect from Cappadocia and what you want to see and do. Since you landed on my article, I’ve done the job for you and chosen tours from Istanbul to Cappadocia to show you the highlights.

I also visited the entire area and researched the best things to do in Cappadocia . I’ve also done many of them during my visit.

👉So read my article here and create your own list of things you want to experience in Cappadocia.

Red Tour/Blue Tour/Green Tour

The main thing to do in Cappadocia is to join organized tours : Red, Blue, and Green . Each tour offers different places and experiences. All of them together will show you the entire Cappadocia.

Each tour from Istanbul consists of the Red Tour (the first day), with the Blue Tour or the Green Tour on the second day.

So I recommend you first read about each tour and its offerings. And then choose whether you want to do the Blue or Green Tour . It’ll make the decision-making much easier and faster when booking your Cappadocia tour from Istanbul.

👉 Click on each tours to learn about what they offer: Red Tour , Blue Tour , and Green Tour .

Number Of Days

Another major thing is, of course, time . I haven’t included day trips from Istanbul to Cappadocia on this list just because I believe once you spend the money going to Cappadocia, you should get the most out of it .

Honestly, spending just a day in Cappadocia (including flights from and to Istanbul) doesn’t give you a lot of time to soak up the atmosphere of this place and do the best things. So I don’t recommend booking a 1-day tour to Cappadocia.

The optimal time to spend in Cappadocia is between 3 to 5 days . 2 days are also fine if the tour includes everything that’s on your bucket list.

👉 I don’t recommend booking a 1-day tour to Cappadocia as it’s not worth the money.

Hot Air Balloon Experience

One thing to consider when choosing the right tour to Cappadocia is the hot air balloon experience. Do you want to ride a hot air balloon for sure? Or do you want it to be an optional activity on your tour? Check with yourself and see how important it’s for you to have it on the itinerary.

👉 Click this link to learn more about the hot air balloon experience and what to expect.

Cave Hotel Accommodation

All of the tours below include a hotel stay. My tip is to book the tour that includes a cave hotel . It’s one of the experiences you can’t miss in Cappadocia .

Many tours offer a stay in a beautiful cave hotel, and the price is similar to other tours that offer just a regular hotel room. So consider it: sleeping in a cave hotel in Cappadocia is an unforgettable experience .

Free Time During The Tour

Once you have your list of things to do in Cappadocia and have chosen a tour, think about your free time. Does it give you extra time to explore more things on your own?

Usually, the 2-day tours are packed and don’t have extra free time . So, if you want to do even more activities that your tour won’t include, opt for a 3-day tour from Istanbul.

👉 Check out my list of the top activities in Cappadocia to see what else you can do besides the three main tours (Red/Blue/Green).

Transportation

Last but not least, think about how you want to get to Cappadocia .

The fastest and most convenient way is to fly from Istanbul to Nevsehir (the main city in Cappadocia). And most of the tours in this list have flights included.

But taking an overnight bus from Istanbul is a unique experience , too. So, just in case you want to experience a Turkish bus ride and stop at several bazaars, I’ve also included a Cappadocia tour from Istanbul by bus.

Some tours end in Cappadocia , and some offer a return trip to Istanbul.

👉 Consider whether you want to stay in Cappadocia or have return transportation to Istanbul included in the tour.

  • 2-Day All Inclusive Cappadocia Tour From Istanbul
  • 2-Day Cappadocia Tour With A Cave Hotel
  • 2-Day Cappadocia Tour With Hot Air Balloon & Cave Hotel
  • 2-Day Cappadocia Tour From Istanbul By Bus

  • 8-Day Cappadocia Tour Package From Istanbul (With Pamukkale & Ephesus)

2-Day Cappadocia Tours From Istanbul

We’ll start with 2 days tours to Cappadocia from Istanbul. I’ve selected three different packages based on the things and activities they offer, accommodation options, and hot air balloon rides. Almost all of them include domestic flights to Cappadocia.

1. 2-Day All Inclusive Cappadocia Tour From Istanbul

This 2-day all-inclusive tour to Cappadocia includes the main highlights . You’ll hike through the top valleys like Rose, Red , and the Pigeon Valley .

A professional guide will walk you through Goreme and its open-air museum , so you’ll learn a lot about the history. You’ll also visit famous underground cities , eat traditional food (Testi Kebab), and have some spare time for extra activities.

You’ll also stay in a traditional cave hotel , which is amazing.

The tour doesn’t include a hot air balloon ride is optional . So you’ll have to pay extra for the balloon experience if you want to.

What’s Included:

✅ roundtrip domestic flights ✅ airport transfers ✅ Red Tour (all sights) ✅ Blue Tour (all sights) ✅ stay in a cave hotel ✅ professional guide ✅ museum tickets ✅ 2x lunch ✅ 1x breakfast

What’s Not Included:

❌ hot air balloon – optional to add ❌ drinks & dinner ❌ tips for your guide (optional)

Why To Choose This Tour?

What I like about this tour is that the hot air balloon ride is optional. It’s not included in the price of the tour. But it gives you a lot of flexibility .

If the weather is bad and hot air balloons don’t fly, you don’t have to deal with refunds or money losses. But if the weather is great and you decide to do the hot air balloon ride on the spot .

This tour also includes airport transfers in Istanbul , which many other tours don’t.

2. 2-Day Cappadocia Tour With A Cave Hotel

With this 2-day tour , you’ll follow the highlights of the Red Tour on the first day. You’ll enjoy stunning views of Göreme from the panorama point. After, you’ll visit the Devrent Valley with its rocks in the shape of animals. Then, you’ll explore the Monk Valley before visiting Avanos and its famous pottery workshop . Enjoy a delicious lunch , and after, visit the stunning Uschisar Castle .

On the second day, you’ll follow the Blue Tour by hiking between the gorgeous Red and Rose Valley . You’ll visit an underground city , Cavushin , and the famous Pigeon Valley .

Flights from Istanbul to Cappadocia, baggage (15kg bag per person), and all airport transfers are included in the price.

The only disadvantage of this tour is that it doesn’t include a hot air balloon ride . Yet, I believe you can book it in early in the morning on the second day if you want to.

✅ roundtrip domestic flights with baggage ✅ airport transfers ✅ cave hotel stay ✅ Red Tour (all sights) ✅ Blue Tour (all sights) ✅ 1x breakfast ✅ 2x lunch ✅ professional guide

❌ hot air balloon ride ❌ drinks & dinner ❌ entrance fees to the sights ❌ tips for your guide (optional)

Why To Choose This Tour

This tour offers the most things in Cappadocia from this list. It also has a special-class cave hotel stay , which is awesome.

The only thing it doesn’t offer is the hot air balloon ride . But you could still do it on the second day if you wanted to. Everything is possible.

3. 2-Day Cappadocia Tour With Hot Air Balloon & Cave Hotel

This 2-day Cappadocia tour from Istanbul with a hot air balloon and a cave hotel stay is perfect for those who want to have the one-package experience and e xperience almost all the highlights of Cappadocia. It already has the top 2 things from the bucket list (hot air balloon ride and cave hotel).

In addition, this tour will show you some spots included in the Red Tour , such as Göreme Viewpoint and Göreme Open Air Museum, take you to a pottery class, and the Devrent Valley.

On the second day, it’ll guide you through the famous sights of the Green Tour . These include the Pigeon Valley, Uschisar, Kaimakli underground city, and Ihlara Canyon.

A disadvantage of this tour is that it doesn’t include flights from Istanbul to Cappadocia. But you can look for flights and find cheap deals by clicking this link .

One thing that this tour doesn’t have is the famous Rose and Love Valley . But you can add the hikes yourself in the evening after the organized program ends (e.g. on the 1. day).

✅ hot air balloon ride ✅ cave hotel stay ✅ airport transfers (Cappadocia) ✅ Red Tour (all sights) ✅ Green Tour (all sights) ✅ professional guide ✅ tickets to museums and sights ✅ 2x lunch ✅ 1x breakfast

❌ domestic flights from Istanbul ❌ dinner & drinks ❌ tips for your guide (optional)

This tour is fantastic because it checks off the main activities (a balloon ride and a cave hotel stay). And it’s affordable compared to other tours that don’t include these two things.

Just think about it: a hot air balloon ride alone costs between $150 and $200. So this tour has a great price vs. program balance . It also covers highlights from the Green Tour (my favorite tour in Cappadocia).

The only disadvantage is that it doesn’t include airport transfers in Istanbul (only in Cappadocia). And it doesn’t have flights to Cappadocia either. But it’s great for those who already have flights purchased or want to start their tour in Nevsehir, Cappadocia (not in Istanbul).

4. 2-Day Cappadocia Tour From Istanbul By Bus

I also have something extra for you if you want to experience an overnight bus ride to Cappadocia instead of flying there.

I took the overnight bus, and it was, indeed, a great experience . The bus has comfortable seats, some serve drinks, and you’ll stop at Turkish bazaars several times.

This bus tour to Cappadocia includes program for 2 full days . You’ll do the famous Red Tour on the first day and the Blue Tour on the second day . It also includes a stay in a boutique cave hotel , all entrance fees, lunch, and a professional guide.

The tour doesn’t include a transfer back to Istanbul , nor a hot air balloon ride .

✅ overnight bus to Cappadocia ✅ stay in a cave hotel ✅ Red Tour (all sights) ✅ Blue Tour (all sights) ✅ meals ✅ professional guide

❌ drinks ❌ return ticket to Istanbul ❌ tips for your guide

This tour is perfect if you want to experience an overnight bus ride to Cappadocia instead of flying there. It’s also great if you want to finish your tour in Cappadocia and keep exploring other places in Turkey (like Pamukkale or southern beaches ) rather than getting back to Istanbul.

The only disadvantage is that it doesn’t have a hot air balloon ride , but you can always add it and do it yourself before the tour program starts.

3-Day Tours From Istanbul To Cappadocia

If 2 days sounds like too little time for you in Cappadocia, I have some tours for 3 days. These three tours cover even more than the ones above, including extra special activities you’ll love.

They’ll also give you extra free time so you can do things that are left on your Cappadocia bucket list, which I love.

Almost all of the following tours include domestic flights . So let’s get to the best 3-day tours from Istanbul to Cappadocia.

5. 3-Day Cappadocia Tour With Hot Air Balloon

This all-inclusive 3-day tour is amazing as it includes almost all the highlights that Cappadocia has to offer. Your flights and transfers are included, and you’ll see the Red Tour and Green Tour sights .

One early morning, you’ll experience the breathtaking hot air balloon ride . What is special about this tour is that it offers the ATV tour at sunset after you arrive in Cappadocia, which no other tour on this list has.

It only doesn’t have a stay in a traditional cave hotel . Yet, you’ll sleep in a beautiful boutique hotel with rooms in the style of a cave .

✅ hot air balloon ride ✅ ATV (quadbike) sunset tour ✅ roundtrip flights to Cappadocia ✅ airport transfers ✅ Red Tour (all sights) ✅ Green Tour (all sights) ✅ 2-night stay in a boutique hotel ✅ professional guide ✅ 2x breakfast ✅ 2x lunch ✅ all entrance fees

❌ drinks & dinner ❌ tips for your guide (optional)

This tour is for you if you want to ultimately skip planning and want to have everything organized for you. With this tour, you’ll experience the top sights, and everything is included, so you don’t have to think about anything .

It might be slightly pricier, but it takes the stress out of you as the organizer will take care of everything for you.

6. 3-Day Cappadocia Tour With Cave Suite

This 3-day Cappadocia tour contains a one-way flight ticket to Cappadocia and a stay in a beautiful cave hotel . You’ll do the two famous tours: the Red Tour and the Blue Tour . The only thing not included is the flight back to Istanbul and hot air balloons .

Yet, it can be perfect for those who don’t want to return to Istanbul . Perhaps you want to continue touring Turkey and visit the southern beaches around Antalya or take a bus to the cotton castle of Pamukkale .

You’ll arrive in Cappadocia on the first day and stay in a cave suite . So I recommend adding an extra activity you can do in the evening yourself such as horse riding , camel riding , or this ATV Tour .

On the second day , a professional guide will take you to the sights covered in the Red Tour . You’ll see Goreme and its Open Air Museum, Uschisar, experience a pottery workshop, and see the Red River.

On the third day , you’ll hike between the two stunning valleys: Rose Valley and Red Valley . Afterward, you’ll see the beautiful Cavusin village, Kaymakli underground city, Pigeon Valley, and Ortshisar Castle.

PRO TIP: You can add a hot air balloon ride on the 2nd or 3rd day before your program starts.

✅ one-way flight ticket to Cappadocia ✅ airport transfer ✅ Red Tour (all sights) ✅ Blue Tour (all sights) ✅ 2-night stay in Cave Suite Hotel ✅ 2x breakfast ✅ 2x lunch ✅ professional guide

❌ return flight to Istanbul ❌ dinner ❌ tips for your guide (optional)

This tour is suitable for you if you don’t want to return to Istanbul but want to continue visiting other places in Turkey from Cappadocia (such as Antalya and Pamukkale). It’s perfect because it includes all the highlights , including a stay in a cave hotel .

The only drawback is that it comes without the hot air balloon ride . But you can organize it early on day 2 or 3 before the official program starts.

7. 3-Day Cappadocia With Hot Air Balloon (With A Champagne) & Cave Hotel

This 3-day Cappadocia tour includes the famous hot air balloon with champagne at the end, the Red Tour and the Green Tour sights, and a cave hotel stay .

On the second day , your guide on the Red Tour will take you to Göreme Viewpoint and explain how the unique landscape was formed. After, you’ll take a pottery class in Avanos and visit the stunning Uschisar with its castle.

On the third day , you’ll tour the popular sights of the Green Tour . Visit the Pigeon Valley, underground cities, Ihlara Valley with traditional lunch, and Selime Monastery.

This tour is great as it shows you the highlights of Cappadocia and still leaves you space to do other activities on your own. I recommend visiting the Rose or the Love Valley on one of the evenings to get the most out of your stay.

It also includes a 2-night stay in a beautiful cave hotel . The airport transfer and entrance fees are included, too.

The tour doesn’t include flights to Cappadocia . So you’ll have to book these by yourself. Click this link to get the best flight deals to Cappadocia.

✅ hot air balloon ride with champagne ✅ 2-night stay in a luxury cave hotel ✅ airport transfers ✅ Red Tour (all sights) ✅ Green Tour (all sights) ✅ entrance tickets to museums and sights ✅ lunches ✅ 2x breakfast

❌ flights to Cappadocia ❌ dinners & drinks ❌ tips for your guide (optional)

Overall, this tour is fantastic if you’re already in Cappadocia and want a personalized and organized package for your stay. This is the perfect way to skip planning and see the highlights of Cappadocia.

I recommend adding extra activities after each day’s program, such as an ATV tour , Camel safari , horse riding , or hiking in The Love and Rose Valley.

8. 4-Day Cappadocia Tour From Istanbul

Now I have something extra for those of you who want to ultimately skip planning and visit the top 2 places in Turkey : Istanbul and Cappadocia .

On this 4-day tour , you’ll experience Istanbul in a day and Cappadocia in 3 days. It includes return domestic flights, airport transfers, stay in a cave hotel, and meals.

During the 2 full days in Cappadocia , you’ll see the highlights of the Red and Blue tours . And it also gives you extra time to do activities by yourself.

The only thing that is not included in this tour is the hot air balloon ride , which you can always add to your itinerary early in the morning.

So, if you only want to get to Istanbul from your country and have everything taken care of , this tour is a great package.

✅ highlights of Istanbul (guided tour) ✅ return domestic flights ✅ airport transfers ✅ stay in a cave hotel ✅ Red Tour (all sights) ✅ Blue Tour (all sights) ✅ 3x breakfast ✅ 2x lunch ✅ professional guide

❌ dinners & drinks ❌ entrance tickets to sights ❌ tips for your guide (optional)

This tour is excellent for you if you dislike planning anything . The bonus is it also includes the highlights of Istanbul , but most of it is Cappadocia. And you’ll get to do it almost all in the area.

As I mentioned, the only drawback is that it doesn’t include a hot air balloon ride . But it gives you flexibility to choose whether to do it on the spot or not.

9. 8-Day Cappadocia Tour Package From Istanbul (With Pamukkale & Emphesus)

Last but not least, I’ve got a full package for you to visit Turkey . So it’s not just about Cappadocia , but you’ll get the entire experience of seeing the top sights in Turkey .

This is an 8-day tour to Istanbul , Cappadocia , Pamukkale , and Ephesus . Out of all, you’ll spend 2 full days in Cappadocia .

The first two days are designed to explore Istanbul . After, you’ll fly to Izmir and visit the beautiful travertine pools of Pamukkale . On the next day, you’ll get the chance to visit one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the world – Ephesus .

Then you’ll fly to Cappadocia , where you’ll enjoy this tour’s last 2 full days . It includes all the top sights from the Red and Blue tours with a professional guide.

It’s a nicely designed tour, so you don’t have to plan anything . You’ll only have to pay extra for entrance fees at each location.

✅ domestic flights ✅ transportation ✅ accommodation ✅ Ephesus ✅ Pamukkale ✅ Cappadocia Red Tour (all sights) ✅ Cappadocia Blue Tour (all sights) ✅ meals

❌ hot air balloon ride ❌ entrance fees to sights ❌ some meals ❌ tips for your guide (optional)

This 8-day tour is for you if you want to explore the highlights of Turkey and return to Istanbul. Flights, transportation, and accommodation are included, so you don’t have to worry about anything .

The only thing that this itinerary is missing is the hot air balloon. But as you already know from this article, you can add it by yourself early in the morning on one of the days you’ll be in Cappadocia.

Practical Tips For Visiting Cappadocia From Istanbul

Here are some tips (from my experience) for your visit to Cappadocia. It’s important to know which time of the year is the best to visit and what you should pack . I’ve also included a list of things to do so you can plan extra activities for your free time and get the most out of Cappadocia. Check them out below.

Best Time To Visit Cappadocia

The best time to visit Cappadocia is during the shoulder season : April, May, September, October, and the beginning of November. It’s way less crowded throughout these months, and the temperatures are mild . It’s also a great time to go hiking in Cappadocia’s valleys and enjoy its breathtaking views.

Summer In Cappadocia

Summer months (June, July, and August) are often the most crowded , and the place is full of visitors. While it’s also a nice time to visit, it’ll be very hot , so prepare accordingly. July and August are also famous for the Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Festival . So prepare for the crowds.

Winter In Cappadocia

Winter in Cappadocia is a different experience. You can still do all the activities at other times of the year. But it gets cold . The temperatures range between 6°C and -5°C . It can also rain more often , so there is a higher chance that your hot air balloon ride will be canceled. Consider this when booking a tour.

How To Pack For Your Tour From Istanbul To Cappadocia

You can pack what you want for your visit to Cappadocia. But the most important thing is to pack warmer clothes such as a jumper, sweater, jacket, and long pants. It gets chilly in Cappadocia in the early mornings and late evenings.

You’ll be in the mountains, so the temperatures drop for the night. Especially if you want to do the hot air balloon ride , bring long-sleeve (warmer) clothes .

I also suggest packing hiking clothes to visit the famous valleys (Love, Rose, Pigeon Valley).

Otherwise, Cappadocia has no restrictions on what to wear , so pack what feels comfortable.

If you take one of these tours from Istanbul, this is about the luggage allowance for your flight . Pack accordingly so you don’t have to pay extra for oversized luggage.

Packing List For Your Cappadocia Tour

Here is a quick packing list for your trip to Cappadocia:

  • 1x jumper/sweater
  • 1-2x pants (long sleeve)
  • 1x hiking shoes
  • hiking poles (optional)
  • 1x sneakers
  • smaller backpack
  • swimming suit (just in case)
  • flipflops (optional)

  • Balloon Ride : Book a hot air balloon ride early, as they’re popular and weather-dependent.
  • Cultural Sites : Plan to visit historical places like the Göreme Open-Air Museum and underground cities.
  • Local Tours : Consider guided tours for insights into the region’s history and geology.
  • Packing Appropriately : Nights can be cool, even in summer, so pack layers. Bring comfortable shoes for hiking.
  • Try Local Delicacies : Sample Cappadocian pottery kebab and testi kebab.
  • Respectful Attire : Carry a scarf and dress modestly if you plan to visit mosques and religious sites.
  • Photography : Charge your camera; Cappadocia’s landscapes are unforgettable, especially during golden hour.
  • Stay Connected : If relying on GPS for navigation, ensure you have a local SIM card or data plan.

Remember that every journey is a unique experience, and while planning is essential, some of the most memorable moments can be unplanned and spontaneous. Enjoy your travels and make the most of every moment!

best time to visit cappadocia

The ideal time to visit a destination can vary greatly depending on your personal preferences, the activities you wish to pursue, and the climate you find most comfortable. Here’s a general overview of the best times to visit Istanbul and Cappadocia, two of Turkey’s most enchanting destinations:

  • Spring (April to June): Spring is a fantastic time to visit Istanbul. The weather is mild, and the city’s gardens and parks burst into colorful bloom. Tourist crowds are still manageable during this season.
  • Fall (September to October): Similar to spring, autumn offers pleasant weather, making it an excellent time to explore Istanbul. You can enjoy cultural festivals, and it’s less crowded than the summer months.

Cappadocia:

  • Spring (April to June): Spring is one of the most popular times to visit Cappadocia due to its mild temperatures and the blossoming landscapes. It’s an ideal time for outdoor activities and hot air balloon rides.
  • Autumn (September to October): Much like spring, autumn offers comfortable temperatures, stunning scenery, and a quieter atmosphere. Balloon rides and hiking are delightful during this time.
  • Winter (December to February): If you’re a fan of unique experiences, consider a winter visit to Cappadocia when the landscapes are blanketed in snow. This season also brings fewer tourists and lower prices.

It’s important to note that both destinations have their own unique charm throughout the year, so the best time for your visit largely depends on your interests. Summers in both Istanbul and Cappadocia can be quite hot, but they’re perfect if you enjoy long, sunny days.

On the other hand, if you prefer milder temperatures and fewer tourists, spring and autumn are excellent choices. Winter is a less crowded but equally magical option for those who enjoy the allure of a quieter, snow-covered landscape.

Flights from Istanbul to Cappadocia

Flying is the quickest and best way to travel from Istanbul to Cappadocia and if you want to visit Istanbul and Cappadocia in one trip, I recommend going to Cappadocia first on your Turkey itinerary because it is the star of the trip!

When planning your trip to Cappadocia, the first thing to note is that Cappadocia is a region in Turkey, not a specific place . Goreme is the main tourist town but Goreme doesn’t have an airport and there is no airport called ‘Cappadocia’!

Cappadocia Airports

The two airports that serve Cappadocia are Kayseri Airport and Nevsehir Airport .

You will most likely need to stop in one of Istanbul’s Airports before catching an internal flight to Cappadocia from Istanbul.

Istanbul Airports

Note that Istanbul has 2 major airports, Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gokcen / SAW Airport and they aren’t that close together, therefore, I wouldn’t recommend flying into one and out of the other unless you give yourself a day in between.

I flew from London Stansted to Istanbul SAW and then to Kayseri Airport with  Pegasus Airlines who I recommend flying with.

I also recommend picking up a sim card for Turkey when you land in either of the airports. Here is help for buying a sim card at Istanbul Airport and buying a sim card at Istanbul SAW Airport and then you’ll have data for the rest of your trip!

Bus from Istanbul to Cappadocia

If you’re travelling Turkey on a budget you can look into the Istanbul to Cappadocia bus (although flights can be very cheap, I paid £10.00 once for my flight from Cappadocia to Istanbul!).

An Istanbul to Cappadocia overnight bus is the best idea to save you time. Overnight buses in Turkey are pretty decent and they are a popular way for locals and travellers to travel around Turkey. It takes 10-12 hours to get from Istanbul to Cappadocia by bus.

Tip: If you do this option, be sure to try and see the sunrise and the balloons when you arrive in Cappadocia in the morning, this is what I did and it was the best welcome to Cappadocia!

Istanbul to Cappadocia Day Trip

A lot of people wonder and search to see whether it is possible to visit Cappadocia on a day trip from Istanbul! There are many day trips from Istanbul on offer which take you to other areas and cities in Turkey but I would say that Cappadocia is NOT one of them.

The flight time might seem short but once you have added the time to get to and from the airport either side, both times, it not a good day trip option!

How to Get from Kayseri Airport to Goreme

Kayseri Airport is the most popular Cappadocia Airport and a minibus is the best and cheapest way to get from Kayseri Airport to Goreme. The drive from Kayseri Airport to Goreme is about 1 hour .

I would recommend booking a shared minibus or private transfer in advance so you know that someone will be waiting for you, you can book this online here:

PRIVATE Airport Transfer Service from Kayseri Airport to Cappadocia with Hotel drop.

You may be realising now that although a day trip to Cappadocia from Istanbul may seem like it’s possible to start with, I don’t think it is thanks to how long all of the sections of transport take.

How to Get from Nevsehir Airport to Goreme

To get from Nevsehir Airport to Goreme I would also recommend a minibus or private transfer which you book in advance. The journey time from Nevsehir to Goreme is less at just 40 minutes .

Where to Stay in Cappadocia

Goreme is the main tourist town in Cappadocia so unless you are hiring a car , you should stay in Goreme otherwise you will struggle to get around.

There are so many Hotels in Goreme from fancy Cave Hotels and even Cave Hostels! Here’s a list of the best hotels in Cappadocia !

I stayed at Cappadocia View Hotel which I would recommend as a budget-friendly hotel in Cappadocia, especially for its terrace to see the balloons from in the morning!

On my first visit, I stayed at the Diamond of Cappadocia Hotel which is right in the centre of Goreme. I also enjoyed my stay there.

How to Get from Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Istanbul City

If you’re going to stop in I stanbul for a few days after Cappadocia, which I recommend you do, read the below details on how to get from Istanbul Airport to Istanbul city.

If you are just transferring in Istanbul Airport to go home, you’re done!

Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport is on the Asian side of Istanbul so it is quite far away from the City Centre. You could get a taxi or book a shuttle bus at the airport to the City Centre, but the cheapest and most popular option is to get a bus .

For a full guide see – Sabiha Airport to Taksim – 3 Ways To Do The Journey Easily!

How to Get the Havabus

There is only one company that offers a bus which is Havabus . Exit Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport in arrivals and you’ll see signs for Havabus . They run every 30 minutes all day and most of the night.

The cost is 18TL which is paid to the driver once you get on the bus.

The only thing is that this bus only goes to Taksim or Kadikoy , not to Karakoy or to Sultanahmet which are the two most popular areas to stay in Istanbul, which is a bit annoying and a bit strange.

Kadikoy is on the Asian side of Istanbul so you could get a bus there and then get a boat over to Karakoy or Sultanahmet if you are staying here. I visited the Asian side of Istanbul a few years ago, it was easy to work out the boats but with all my bags I didn’t really fancy doing this journey.

The second option which is what I’ve done twice is to get the bus to Taksim which takes roughly 90 minutes but it can be longer when the traffic is bad. Taksim is technically the Centre of Istanbul too (Istanbul is very big) but I wouldn’t recommend staying here, more on that below.

The Havabus stops at Point Hotel Taksim and there will be lots of taxi drivers waiting for you, you could get a taxi, I believe I was quoted 60TL to go to Sultanahmet or you can walk down the street and head towards the Metro.

Istanbul’s Metro System is really easy to use, but of course, with a lot of bags everything can seem a bit harder to do, it is possible though. You need to get an Istanbulkart (see how in the below point), and then head towards the Funicular to Kabatas, it’s just one stop, quick and pretty cool.

Then get on the tram, it only goes in one direction from Kabatas to the ‘City Centre’ aka Karakoy or Sultanahmet. This is the cheapest way to get from Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Istanbul City Centre and it’s not that hard either.

How to Get an Istanbulkart in Istanbul

An Istanbulkart can be purchased at most little tobacco stores or in the Metro stations . Some of the ticket machines only offer Istanbulkart re-charge and do not sell the actual ticket, so be sure to check above the ticket machine and look for Istanbulkart Sales.

You’ll see the option on the screen, a card is 6TL . You then need to top it up. If you put in say 10TL it will purchase your card and then top it up by 4TL, so be careful not to put too much of a big note in.

If you just paid 6TL or you need more credit, hold your card to the reader, choose the amount, put the money in and then wait a few seconds until the timer finishes and you see a green sign on the screen to say it’s been completed. (I walked away too soon the first time and mine didn’t top up even though I paid, luckily it was just 5TL).

The metro is really cheap to use, literally just 2-4 TL per journey and you’ll know when your card is out of credit as it won’t let you through the barriers. From what I saw all stations and stops have a ticket machine to top up your card at.

Where to Stay in Istanbul

For my full guide read where to stay in Istanbul where I rate 9 neighbourhoods in Istanbul to stay in.

Taksim and Sultanahmet are popular areas of Istanbul to stay in, here’s my view on Where To Stay in Istanbul Taksim Or Sultanahmet?

There are a few popular areas to stay in Istanbul, Sultanahmet is the best place to stay in Istanbul in my opinion if you are only staying in Istanbul for 1-2 nights as it’s where all of the attractions are for example Hagia Sophia and the popular Mosques.

There is an array of accommodation in Sultanahme t and although it may be a bit pricer, it benefits from being convenient.

Karakoy is just across the River (but still in the European Side), this is a popular area as it’s just across the bridge from the tourist spots but because of this it benefits from slightly cheaper accommodation prices  as it is less touristy, it’s more hipster!

Then there’s Taksim , this could be a good place to stay if you are in Istanbul for a while or really on a budget as the prices are lower and there are lots of accommodation options , but if you’re there for just a few days I’d advise against it.

Kadikoy is another popular area to stay in Istanbul but I’d say that’s because it’s a bit different due to it being on the Asian side of the City. The rest of the city is easily accessible by boat but again, if you’re there for just a few days I would say you’ll end up travelling too much to get to the tourist sites.

If you are looking for some luxury in a nice location, I recommend Besiktas and one of the best luxury hotels in Besiktas !

Istanbul to Cappadocia, Blue Mosque

Things To Do In Istanbul

If you have 2 or 3 days in Istanbul , read my 2-3 Day Istanbul itinerary here and my 4 day Istanbul itinerary here!

If you only have one day in Istanbul here is how I recommend you spend it.

Visit 1 – 3 of the Museums – Hagia Sophia, Basilican Cistern or Topkapi Palace for example. All of these 3 are in the same area and really close to each other, to save time be sure to purchase Skip the Queue tickets in advance to save yourself time.

Go into the Blue Mosque which is also in the same area.

Head to the Grand Bazaar .

Grab lunch from one of the Food Sellers on the Streets.

Cross over the River via the Bridge .

Walk up to the Galata Tower so you can see the Galata and Karakoy area.

Go on a boat trip up and down the Bosphorus River which takes you right between the European and Asian Side of Istanbul.

Have Dinner in one of the many restaurants in Sultanahmet.

From Istanbul to Cappadocia: 5 Best Ways to Get There

Written by Jess Lee Updated Aug 1, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

There is a lot of transport choice when it comes to getting from Istanbul to Cappadocia . Your decision will depend on how much time you've allocated for your trip and the style of travel you prefer.

From a speedy, fully pre-organized tour to using public transport or a self-drive road trip, every level of comfort is covered. Discover the best ways to get from Istanbul to Cappadocia.

On This Page:

  • From Istanbul to Cappadocia by Airplane
  • From Istanbul to Cappadocia by Bus
  • From Istanbul to Cappadocia by Tour
  • From Istanbul to Cappadocia by Train & Bus
  • From Istanbul to Cappadocia by Car

1. From Istanbul to Cappadocia by Airplane

Hot air balloons over Cappadocia

For travelers on a short trip, flying direct to Cappadocia from Istanbul is a popular option.

Turkish Airlines and Pegasus Airlines offer regular flights to Cappadocia's two airports throughout the day and night. The flight time is 80 minutes.

Turkish Airlines offer the most options for Cappadocia-bound flights. Six services daily head to Kayseri Airport from either Istanbul International Airport or Sabiha Gökçen Airport, and one service at least departs daily from Istanbul International Airport for Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport.

Pegasus Airlines flights to Cappadocia all depart from Sabiha Gökçen and arrive at Kayseri Airport.

Although your choice of flight will probably depend more on the most suitable departure time for you, it's worth knowing the differences between Cappadocia's two airports.

Kayseri Erkilet Airport is in the city of Kayseri, approximately 80 kilometers east from the villages that are at the center of Cappadocia's tourism industry.

Much smaller Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport is just north of the town of Gülşehir, approximately 40 kilometers northwest of the villages.

Pre-booked airport shuttle services offer door-to-door transport from both airports to the hotels in the Cappadocia villages. Journey time from Kayseri Airport, depending both on the waiting time for all passengers booked on the shuttle to exit the airport and on which village you're staying in, can take up to two hours. From Nevşehir Airport, the shuttle bus services rarely take longer than 30 minutes door to door.

Seats on these privately run airport shuttles must be booked in advance. These transfers are normally organized by your hotel.

2. From Istanbul to Cappadocia by Bus

Ancient town and a castle of Uchisar, Cappadocia

A few different bus companies offer direct transport from Istanbul's main Esenler Otogar (bus station) and Istanbul's other bus station, Alibeykoy Otogar to Nevşehir Otogar on the outskirts of Nevşehir city, approximately 18 kilometers west from the Cappadocia villages (depending on which village you're staying in). Some bus companies also provide direct drop-off to Göreme and Avanos. If you're staying in either of these towns, choose a bus offering direct drop-off so you don't have to wait for another bus in Nevşehir.

The major companies plying this route are Nevşehir Seyahat , Kamil Koç (which is owned by the European Flixbus company so uses both names) and Metro . The journey time takes between 11 and 12 hours.

Most departure options leave during the evening, depositing you at Nevşehir bus station the next morning. There are a couple of day-bus services though, which are great for travelers who enjoy watching the scenery pass by.

There is very little ticket price difference between the companies who work this route, so your decision on which service to use will mostly be made on departure time.

All the buses are fitted with comfortable, airline-style seating, which includes individual entertainment systems and charging points for your phone, and an on-board conductor service, which offers complimentary hot and cold drinks and a snack.

There are direct minibus services to the Cappadocian tourism centers of Göreme, Ürgüp, and Avanos from Nevşehir Otogar (bus station).

3. From Istanbul to Cappadocia by Tour

Homes built into the rocks in Goreme, Cappadocia

Those short on time on their Turkey trip may want to opt for a prearranged Cappadocia side-trip tour from Istanbul.

This is a hassle-free option, where all transport, transfers, activities, and accommodation are organized for you, so you can just sit back and enjoy your Cappadocia visit.

Be aware that the shortest Cappadocia side-trip tours from Istanbul are two days, not one-day tours. With tourist attractions here spread throughout the region, you need at least 48 hours for a snapshot trip.

The in-location overnight stay also allows you to participate in the region's famous hot-air ballooning activity , which takes place at dawn. Cappadocia tours from Istanbul typically do not include this in their price but offer it as an optional extra, which they can book for you.

For a small group tour with passenger numbers capped at 15, the 2 Days, 1 Night Cappadocia Tour offers an itinerary that covers a number of Cappadocia's natural and historical attractions on a short trip.

The tour includes return flights from Istanbul with door-to-door airport transfers for both flights and two regional tours with a professional guide while in Cappadocia. These include a short hike in Rose Valley and entrance fees to Göreme Open-Air Museum and Kaymakli Underground City, an overnight stay in a cave-hotel, and two lunches and breakfasts. Hot air ballooning can be booked while reserving your place on the tour but isn't included in the tour price.

A very similar private tour version is the 2 Days Cappadocia Tour from Istanbul . This tour includes return flights from Istanbul, direct airport transfers for both flights, a one-night stay in a cave-hotel in Göreme, and two guided tours of some of Cappadocia's highlights. These guided tours include visits to Derinkuyu Underground City and Göreme Open-Air Museum, two lunches and two breakfasts. Hot air ballooning can be organized by the tour company but is an extra non-included activity in the tour price.

Note that these snapshot-style tours are quite rushed due to limited time so won't suit some travelers. You will be heading out on a tour directly after your airport transfer into Cappadocia and you'll need to be packed and ready to go on day two in the morning as you'll be directly transferred to the airport after your day two tour finishes.

Note that arranging a Cappadocia tour through an Istanbul travel agency costs more than organizing a similar tour through a local Cappadocia travel agency and – due to not being so limited by time constraints – tours arranged in Cappadocia can include sights and tourist attractions that are farther out in the region, such as Ilhara Valley.

4. From Istanbul to Cappadocia by Train & Bus

Fairy chimneys, rock formations of tufa, Cappadocia

The high-speed train line between Istanbul, Ankara, and Konya means, if you have a bit more time to spend on the journey to Cappadocia, you can add in stops at two of central Anatolia's most important cities into your trip.

With a leisurely pace, you could fit in both cities along the route, or choose one as an overnight stop.

Ankara , Turkey's capital, is home to the important Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and the Anıtkabir , the mausoleum of Atatürk (the founder of the modern republic of Turkey).

Konya is filled with restored Seljuk-era mosques and monuments, and is the home of the whirling dervishes and the Mevlana Museum , one of Turkey's major pilgrimage sites.

There are eight high-speed train services, taking four and a half hours, from Istanbul to Ankara daily.

To Konya direct from Istanbul, there are three services, with a journey time of four hours and 15 minutes.

If you're planning to stop in both cities, there are high-speed train departures seven times daily from Ankara to Konya, taking just under two hours for the trip.

Train tickets should be purchased in advance, as seats do sell out.

From both Ankara Otogar (bus station) and Konya Otogar there are bus services to Nevşehir Otogar, the main transport hub of the Cappadocia region.

5. From Istanbul to Cappadocia by Car

Road in Cappadocia, Turkey

Hiring a car to drive across the Anatolian countryside from Istanbul to Cappadocia means you have the freedom to explore some of the major historic highlights of the region along the way.

Although you could also visit most of these destinations by public transport, the journey would be much less straightforward and would take longer to achieve.

Three of the best stops if journeying by car on this route would be the preserved Ottoman village of Safranbolu (410 kilometers east from Istanbul); the Phrygian ruins of Gordion (468 kilometers southeast from Istanbul or 272 kilometers south from Safranbolu); and the Hittite ruins of Hattuşa, which sit in the village of Boğazkale (307 kilometers southeast from Safranbolu or 305 kilometers east from Gordion).

From Hattuşa, it's a further 196 kilometers drive south to the village of Göreme, the heart of Cappadocia's tourism industry.

Safranbolu and Boğazkale both have accommodation for overnight stops along the way. There are also plenty of other tourist attractions and historic sites in the hinterland surrounding both these destinations, so it's well worth allowing yourself a few days for your entire journey.

Byzantine monastery complex of Açık Saray

Sights along the way:

To make the most of having your own wheels, as you come into the Cappadocia region, stop off at some of the area's lesser-seen sights along the way.

Hacıbektaş, 57 kilometers northwest from Göreme, is a pilgrimage town for the Bektaşı order (a mystical offshoot of Islam) and is home to the Hacıbektaş Veli Museum within a restored dervish lodge.

From here, head 28 kilometers south to the Church of St Jean on the outskirts of the small town of Gülşehir. Inside this hollowed out rock-cone you'll find some of Cappadocia's best restored and finely detailed mid-Byzantine frescoes (dated from the 13th century) yet, because it's off the main tourist route, it only receives a handful of visitors.

Another two-kilometer hop west down the main highway, and you arrive at the Byzantine monastery complex of Açık Saray , with its refectory building and churches carved out of the rock and thought to date back to around the 7th century. From here it's only a short 23-kilometer drive southeast, onward to Göreme.

Driving in Turkey is relatively straightforward thanks to main highways being in excellent condition and good signage for towns, tourist attractions , and historic sites. Note that gas is expensive in Turkey though, so self-drive trips will always work out more expensive than other transport options.

Which Istanbul Airport To Depart From?

IStanbul-Airport-Interior

As you might’ve heard, Istanbul got a new airport in 2018 . Known as Istanbul Airport (IST), it is one of the biggest and busiest airports in the world.

With the addition of Istanbul Airport, there are now a total of two airports in Istanbul where travelers can fly to Cappadocia. The other being Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW).

The main difference between the Istanbul Airport and SAW Airport is that the Istanbul Airport is on the European Side and the Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW) is on the Asian Side.

Generally speaking, the Istanbul Airport is going to be more convenient because the European Side is where most tourists stay. It is where the historic center of Istanbul, Sultanahmet, and the modern center of Istanbul, Taksim, are located.

Both airports in Istanbul offer regular flights to Cappadocia, but Istanbul Airport is generally a little bit more convenient to get to. Of course, if you have a airport shuttle planned, then none of this really matters.

Which Cappadocia Airport to Fly Into?

Before you book your Istanbul to Cappadocia flight, Cappadocia also has two airports. While it makes very little difference which airports you fly from in Istanbul, it does make a difference which airport in Cappadocia you fly into .

There are two airports in Cappadocia:

  • Kayseri Erkilet International Airport (ASR)
  • Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV)

The Kayseri Airport is generally cheaper, but it is located a little further out of Goreme (the historic center of Cappadocia and the most popular place to stay). It is about 75 kilometers, or an hour drive, from Kayseri Airport to Goreme.

Nevşehir Airport is a little bit more expensive, but it is located about 40 kilometers (40-minute drive) from Goreme. Nevsehir Airport is located inside the UNESCO Heritage Site of Cappadocia while Kayseri is not. The ride from Nevsehir Airport to the center of Cappadocia is much more scenic than the one from Kayseri Airport.

Both airports are completely fine to fly into, as long as you have a pre-arranged shuttle waiting for you. Because there is no public transportation from the airports to Goreme, tourists are often scammed by taxi drivers at those airports.

Which Airline to Fly With?

How-Many-Airports-in-Istanbul

There are three airlines that serve the Istanbul to Cappadocia flight route:

  • Turkish Airlines
  • Pegasus Airlines
  • Aztec Airways

Turkish Airlines offer the best quality but since it is such a short flight, it doesn’t matter much. It is worth noting that Turkish Airline is the only airline that flies out of Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European Side. The other two airlines fly out of Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (SAW) on the Asian side.

From Istanbul To Cappadocia By Bus: The Most Economical Way

Long-distance buses going from Istanbul to Cappadocia depart regularly from both Istanbul’s European side and Asian side. There are a lot of bus terminals in Istanbul, and it is important that you (more importantly, your taxi driver) get it right.

If you are visiting Istanbul as a tourist, chances are, you’ll be staying on the European side near Taksim or Sultanahmet. The main bus station (otogar) on the European side of Istanbul is  Esenler Otogari , which is quite accessible by public transportation.

The buses that depart on the European side often make stops on the Asian side, so if you are staying on the Asian side, you can usually just go to the nearest bus stop for Cappadocia. You don’t need to go all the way to the bus station on the European side.

There are many bus companies that operate between Istanbul and Cappadocia, but we recommend using Metro Turizm, as their buses are clean, comfortable, and they have been reliable at showing up.

Other bus companies that we have used and recommend are Kâmil Koç, Pamukkale Turizm and Güney Akdeniz. There are several others, but we haven’t used them so can’t comment on their efficiency.

Buses from Istanbul to Cappadocia stop at Göreme, which is the historic center of Cappadocia and where you should stay. This means you can save some money on a taxi or a shuttle compared to taking a flight!

If you are staying in Avanos or Uchisar, you will need to get the minibus from Goreme to your hotel. The minibuses operate every 20 minutes from Goreme bus station (conveniently where the long-distance bus drops you off) though they don’t always arrive at the official timetable. You may have to wait a while.

How To Buy Bus Tickets in Istanbul

All bus tickets and schedules can be found on the Turkish official bus website here . Theoretically, you can purchase tickets through this website, but we’ve never been successful.

If you cannot purchase a ticket online, it is important that you get there the day before and buy your ticket, especially during the peak season. Buses do get full, especially if you buy the ticket near its departure time and date.

There are tour agencies throughout the historic center of Istanbul that can help you buy tickets, so you can save the time and effort of going to the bus station and back.

Alternatively, what we’ve been doing is getting it with 12Go.asia . They are a reliable company and we’ve had nothing but good experiences with them. But it is worth noting that not all bus companies are on their site.

Should You Take A Night Bus or Day Bus From Istanbul To Cappadocia?

Because the journey is over 10 hours, we recommend the night bus because you can sleep through most of it. Turkey’s long-distance buses are quite comfortable and safe, but sleeping might still be a problem for you.

If you are traveling on a budget in Turkey , you can even save some money. A night bus is cheaper than a flight and you can even save on a night of accommodation because you’ll be sleeping on the bus.

Guided Tour From Istanbul To Cappadocia

Selime Monastery Green Tour Cappadocia

Because there can be a lot of logistics to plan when going from Istanbul to Cappadocia, some travelers might prefer a guided tour that includes everything from flights to hotels and hot air balloon rides to where to eat in Cappadocia all sorted.

However, picking the right tour can be quite tricky. How many days is enough in Cappadocia ? What do you need to pack? Etc, etc, etc.

📚 That is why we’ve written a full guide on the best tours from Istanbul to Cappadocia here .

From Istanbul To Cappadocia By Train

Another option to get from Istanbul to Cappadocia is by train. Unfortunately, there is no direct train from Istanbul to Cappadocia, which means that travelers would have to switch to a bus.

The high-speed train (called Yüksek Hızlı Tren or YHT for short ) from Istanbul can only take travelers as far as Konya or Ankara . From there, you’ll have to switch to a long-distance bus.

The high-speed train from Istanbul to Ankara takes about 4 hours with multiple departures daily. However, the train station is in Pendik, which is the Asian side of Istanbul, and can take quite a bit for those coming from the historic center such as Sultanahmet or Taksim.

The train from Istanbul to Konya takes about 4 hours to complete. The train goes from Istanbul, stops at the city of Eskişehir, and then finally arrives in Konya. There are several stops along the way as well.

Ankara-Bus-Station

Once you arrive in Ankara or Konya, you can take a long-distance bus to Cappadocia.

  • From Ankara, it takes about 3 to 4 hours to get to Cappadocia by bus
  • From Konya, it also takes about 3 to 4 hours to get to Cappadocia by bus

Note that the long-distance buses in Cappadocia are never direct, so there are going to be other stops along the way.

Unless you are planning on making a stop in Ankara or Konya anyways, taking the train is usually not quicker or more convenient than the bus. The pros of taking the train are definitely more legroom and the ability to walk around.

  • Beyşehir – A small town located on the Beyşehir Lake. It’s a rather peaceful town with the beautiful wooden Eşrefoğlu Mosque.
  • Ankara – The capital of Turkey is filled with some of the country’s best museums and things to do. Don’t miss the Atatürk Mausoleum and the historic center.
  • Eskişehir – The name Eskişehir literally translates to “Old City” in Turkish. But, the town is the perfect mix of modern infrastructure, historical buildings, and nature. It has hip cafes, restaurants and a lively atmosphere thanks to its big student population.
