The Boston Symphony Orchestra says bon voyage this week as they depart from Symphony Hall for their 30th international tour, with performances overseas from Aug. 25-Sept. 8.

The first stop is in London, with two shows at Royal Albert Hall. The nine-city, 12-concert tour will be the sixth international jaunt for BSO musical director Andris Nelsons; it also marks the return of the orchestra’s European tradition after several years’ hiatus and a cancellation in 2022 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic .

The BSO returns to Europe for the first time since 2018

The Boston Symphony Orchestra's first tour of Europe since 2018 is underway: a whirlwind excursion through familiar cities like London, Salzburg, Berlin and Paris.

But the performance on Friday, Sept. 1, will be particularly special. The BSO is set to play in Slovenia for the first time in the orchestra's history. The venue is Cankarjev Dom Culture and Congress Centre in Slovenia's capital city, Ljubljana.

"We've been to all these cities already, except for Ljubljana," said BSO stage manager John Demick. "Slovenia sounds great. I'm looking forward to it."

Led by conductor Andris Nelsons, the orchestra's first stop was London, with two performances at the Royal Albert Hall on Aug. 25 and Aug. 26.

"This is a special hall. We really love being here," said Demick, who graciously took several minutes to speak with WBUR, mere hours before the first London performance. "It's a little bit different than in the past [prior to COVID], but isn't everywhere?"

"Oh it's wonderful to to have them back," said David Pickard, director of the BBC Proms classical music festival , which hosts a parade of world-class orchestras all summer long — including the BSO.

Pickard calls the BSO one of the "casualties" of 2020. The orchestra was scheduled to play the Royal Albert Hall that year, but COVID-19 threw a wrench in their plans.

Now, Pickard said, it's the first year that feels sort of — almost — back to normal.

“Its been rocky for everyone. This is a shared trauma between orchestras, soloists, conductors and so on," he said. "We were still getting used to the idea that we could stand in crowds last summer and this year it's amazing ... to have that arena packed with people close, shoulder to shoulder, which is almost unthinkable after the pandemic."

Pickard said it's "wonderful" to have the BSO back because there's been "a very long and very fruitful association between the BSO, conductor Andris Nelsons and the Proms."

"Sitting here last night, we realized what we have missed the sheer joy of having orchestras coming from a long ways away," he said. "And particularly somewhere like Boston, which has such a huge international reputation."

The BBC Proms is held every summer at the Royal Albert Hall and several other venues around London. Its roots go all the way back to 1895, when founder and conductor Henry Wood first launched the festival. Wood's aim was to bring the best in classical music to the widest possible audience, and The Proms continues in that tradition today.

"One of the key things about The Proms as they have always existed is you have very accessible cheap seat prices," Pickard said. "And that existed in The Queens Hall, and now exists today at the Royal Albert Hall."

"It was trying to introduce people to culture, but make it accessible to people who otherwise wouldn't get it," Pickard says. "Every single Proms that we present is broadcast through the BBC."

Suzanne Nelsen, second bassoonist for the BSO, said she's ecstatic to be back.

"I love London," Nelsen said. "I love the Hall. I love the atmosphere of the Proms and the people standing around. ... At intermission, they start sort of chanting, and it's so great. ... sometimes, in between pieces, they'll start doing that. It's really a culture."

Proms director Pickard said the crowd was "absolutely ecstatic."

"[The BSO] has a very different sound and a different feel to European orchestras," he said. "And that's thrilling for me and it's thrilling for our audiences."

At the first performance at Royal Albert Hall, the BSO performed Richard Strauss's "Death and Transfiguration," Sergei Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5 and  Julia Adolphe's " Makeshift Castle " — a piece she planned to premiere in 2020, but was delayed. During the pandemic, Adolphe reworked the piece, completing the final version in May 2022. The BSO and Andris Nelsons gave the world premiere at Tanglewood in July 2022.

This year, the BSO premiered Carlos Simon's brand-new " Four Black American Dances ." The orchestra performed the piece in London on night two.

"We love the imagination of the BSO," Pickard said. "These contemporary composers we love; and it's vital that the BSO is bringing those. ... We want a broader balance of gender and ethnicity. So bringing a new piece by a woman and a new piece by a person of color is very very important to us.”

After two nights in London, it was on to Switzerland Aug. 28-29, then Salzburg, Austria on Aug. 31. The BSO premieres in Ljubljana, Slovenia on Friday, Sept. 1, before continuing to four cities in Germany Sept. 3-7, and concluding the tour in Paris on Sept. 8.

"I think we're gonna get more and more in the groove," Nelsen said of the tour. "You know, we get more used to playing and, even in different halls, we tend to sort of go by feel and we get charged up. So it's gonna get better and better."

Polished sheen as the Boston Symphony strings impress in Strauss

Big is beautiful. The Boston Symphony Orchestra , the grandest of international orchestras at this year’s BBC Proms , certainly went large in the first concert of their European tour, bringing a heavyweight programme in their luggage and packing the stage with the largest string section I’ve seen in action for a while – ten double basses on duty! And the string sound was certainly beautiful, the dense tone and polished sheen lovingly sculpted by Andris Nelsons’ meticulous baton. It worked best in Richard Strauss’ expansive ruminations on mortality in Death and Transfiguration , but lacked the caustic bite for Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony.

Nelsons and the orchestra opened with the European premiere of Julia Adolphe’s Makeshift Castle , a fine 15-minute work in two movements, titled Sandstone and Wooden Embers , which depicts life’s ephemeral nature. It draws on two key moments: the composer’s earliest memory of witnessing a sunset and the first time she saw her father cry, as he recalled watching a sunset with his own mother. It’s a work that plays on contrasts, Sandstone opening with lively brass and tense percussion, whose exuberance is suddenly stifled with a stopped horn note leading to sweet strings and muted trumpet, pared down to solo violin. The reflective Wooden Embers is the stronger movement, its powerful tutti framed by mournful bassoons, a desolate piccolo and a clarinet fading to nothing.

The Royal Albert Hall was then plunged into demonic red lighting – why? – for Strauss’ tone poem Death and Transfiguration . Nelsons was alert to the irregular breaths of the dying man at the opening in a reading that was considerably tighter than his recent BSO recording. The string playing was often exquisitely soft, the brass smooth, solo oboe noble. Nelsons basked in such a glorious sound, gradating the dynamics sensitively. Not a hair was out of place, every chord was carefully balanced. The climax surged as the “transfiguration theme” emerged and the closing moments offered heavenly repose.

Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony was similarly well played, but where was the energy or the sense of danger? Nelsons’ tempi were fine – his baton movements may look fluid, but are very rhythmically driven from the wrist – but this account was metrical rather than menacing. The Boston brass tone was buffed, Nelsons sanding away Prokofiev’s sharp edges. The strings played deftly in the ostinato of the Scherzo, but this Allegro marcato lacked drive, despite the excellent percussion department’s best efforts.

The highlight was the gorgeous Adagio , its surging melody reminiscent of the yearning theme of War and Peace , the opera Prokofiev composed around the same time. The Allegro giocoso finale zipped along breezily, the clarinet solo perkily dispatched, but this Prokofiev 5 was disappointingly soft-focussed and under-characterised.

Andris Nelsons conducts the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall.

Prom 52: Boston SO/ Nelsons review – weighty lyricism and ravishing reflection

Royal Albert Hall, London The Boston Symphony showed signature depth in a grand Prokofiev Fifth, and splendidly contrasting textures in both Strauss and an emotionally driven premiere from US composer Julia Adolphe

T he first of this year’s two Boston Symphony Proms with Andris Nelsons closed with Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony, a work central to the orchestra’s history. They gave the first US performance late in 1945 under their then music director Serge Koussevitzky (the world premiere had taken place, in wartime, in Moscow, the previous January), and then went on to make the first commercial recording the following year. And it’s still uncommonly well suited to their dark, weighty sound with its bright, forward brass, rich strings and warm, focused woodwind.

Prokofiev completed the symphony in 1944, claiming it depicted “the greatness of the human spirit”, though we can also detect ironies and ambiguities in it as a product of the Stalinist era. Nelsons made much of the scherzo’s sudden lurch towards mechanism, and the way the warmth drains briefly from the finale before its joie de vivre reasserts itself. Elsewhere, he tapped a vein of sombre lyricism, shaping the monumental first movement with lofty grandeur, and was detailed and heartfelt in his treatment of the adagio. Superbly played, this was extremely fine.

Splendour … the audience enjoys Prom 52.

Before the interval came Strauss ’s Tod und Verklärung and the European premiere of Julia Adolphe’s Makeshift Castle. The latter is a two-part study of the relationship between memory and emotion, inspired by Adolphe’s own recollections of her late father being moved to tears by reminiscences of his mother while he and Adolphe, then a young child, were watching a sunset over a lake. Post-Romantic in idiom, it’s attractively scored. Slowly shifting textures suggest the omnipresence of mutability: an almost glaring refulgence fades to twilight; and a bitter threnody is eventually tempered by reflection.

Its preoccupation with memory also links it with Strauss’s depiction of a dying artist recalling his painful strivings in life for ideals that can only be perfectly realised beyond the grave. Strings, harp and woodwind sounded ravishing at the start, though we could perhaps have done with more tension and violence in the jolting recollections and terrors of the central allegro. The final transfiguration, though, building slowly to its climax, was almost overpowering in its splendour.
