15 Best CAGAYAN Tourist Spots (Northern Philippines)

Over a decade ago, I was in my mid-20s and working as a TV segment producer on a show for a major TV network. This stint allowed me to travel to some of the best places, including Cagayan, one of the most beautiful and underrated provinces in the Philippines. The trip was so memorable for me, I’d always wanted to return. I guess I manifested it because in 2019, I joined a familiarization trip organized by the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority ( CEZA ). I recall thinking that despite the passing years, Cagayan remained pretty much the same, generally unexplored and as splendid as I had remembered it.

Cagayan Province is located in the Cagayan Valley region in the northern part of the Philippines. Its capital is Tuguegarao City . There are different stories as to the etymology of Cagayan. One is from the term “Catagayan,” meaning “the place where tagay grows.” Tagay is a type of plant that is endemic to the northern province. On the other hand, some linguists claim that the province’s name was derived from the local words for “river,” such as karayan , kayan , kayayan , and kalayan .

Cagayanos are mostly of Ilocano descent who migrated from the Ilocos Region. The second largest community is the Ibanag, while the minor population comprises the Malawis, Itawits, Gaddangs, Aetas, and Ibatans. The primary language in Cagayan is Ilocano, followed by Ibanag, Itawit, and Tagalog.

Dubbed the Land of Smiling Beauty, Cagayan is known for its Spanish colonial heritage and Sambali or Piat festival held annually to celebrate the Christianization of the Itawis. Thanks to its natural beauty and rich biodiversity, it’s also a major ecotourism destination, particularly attracting adventure seekers for its majestic caves, fishing expeditions, and hiking trails.

1. Palaui Island

Palaui is a protected island in Santa Ana, Cagayan , covering an area of 7,145 hectares. In 1994, Palaui was declared a National Marine Reserve and was home to 90 migratory birds, 21 commercial species of fish, and about 50 hectares of corals. It gained worldwide popularity after being used as a filming location for two Survivor seasons; Survivor Blood vs. Water and Survivor Cagayan in 2013.

It was one of the places we visited during the familiariazation tour with CEZA. It took about 30 minutes to get to the island via boat from San Vicente Port.

Palaui is an excellent destination if you want to spend a day with nature. Some activities that you can do on the island are hiking, scuba diving, and enjoying the view of the rolling hills. The best attractions in Palaui are Cape Engaño Lighthouse, Anguib beach, Punta Verde, and Crocodile island.

We took a hike to the Cape Engaño Lighthouse (or Faro de Cabo Engaño). The lighthouse is not open to the public, but we were free to roam in the surrounding areas. And the view from that hill is worth the effort. There’s a 360-view of the sea and nearby islands; it was simply breathtaking.

Next we went to Punta Verde located on the other side of Palaui Island. It has an unsullied beach and numerous homesteads that accommodate tourists. If you want to see some props from the Survivor TV show, you can check out some at Punta Verde, specifically at Nature Village, where they were on display.

2. Anguib Beach

Anguib beach , also known as Boracay of the North, is located in the municipality of Sta. Ana. The beach is often compared with Boracay for its cerulean blue waters and fine white sand. I didn’t know that Cagayan was hiding such a pristine beach that when I saw it, I was completely blown away. The beach remains largely unexploited, so ruggedly gorgeous that it can rival the more popular beaches in the Philippines.

If you want to enjoy a beautiful beach away from the crowd, you should visit Anguib. The waters here are clean and filled with marine life making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

3. Callao Cave

Callao Cave is located in Peñablanca, Cagayan, about 24 km from Tuguegarao City. It’s known for the seven-chamber show caves that were first excavated in 1980. It’s part of the Peñablanca Protected Landscape and Seascape (PPLS), a protected area and national park.

Callao Cave is an important site in Cagayan not only for tourism purposes but also for its historical contribution. In 2007, a team of archaeologists excavated fossils of human sub-species called Callao Man or Homo Luzonensis from the late Pleistocene era from this cave. Today, tourists can visit seven chambers inside the cave, including the Chapel. This cave is perfect for beginners as it’s easy to navigate.

4. Pinacanauan River

The Pinacanauan River is a tributary of the Cagayan River that passes through the PPLS. The name means left-most in the local vernacular. It’s known for its fantastic views of karst formations and unspoiled waters.

You can go swimming or take a leisurely boat ride on this river. If you’re up for an adventure, you can do water rafting or kayaking, or ask the boatman to take you to Callao Cave where yo can go spelunking or see thousands of bats.

5. Nangaramoan Beach

Nangaramoan beach is located in Sta. Ana and it sits on the same shoreline as the other beaches, Anguib, Puzo, and Mapurao. With white golden sand, clear blue waters, and surrounded with lush greenery and rock formations, it’s no wonder it’s a favorite destination by the locals.

This is one of the beaches that you can visit in Sta. Ana. You can go on a day trip or stay overnight as there several resorts in the area. The shoreline is rocky, and the sand is coarse and filled with crushed corals, so be mindful of where you step. Nevertheless, you will enjoy the serene scenery and the picturesque beach.

6. Baggao’s Bluewater Falls and Cave

Baggao Bluewater Falls and Cave is a natural waterpark in the municipality of Baggao. It’s an underrated destination in Cagayan, where people can enjoy the waterfalls, swim in the natural pools, and explore the caves.

This park should be included in your itinerary if you’re looking for adrenaline-filled activities. Get ready to embark on an adventure where you can go trekking, river crossing, canyoneering, and spelunking.

7. Casagan Bridge & River

Casagan Bridge is located in Sta. Ana and it takes about 15 minutes to get there from the town properly. The bridge was built in 2018 on top of the Casagan Takuli River, which is the residents’ primary source of livelihood thanks to its abundant supply of edible shells and fish.

It’s one of the places we went to during the fam trip with CEZA. The bridge’s structure was made with planks of wood, steel cables, and chicken wire. It’s narrow, but light vehicles like motorbikes and bicycles can pass through it. I was able to walk over the bridge and take some photos; it swayed a little, but the bridge was sturdy, so there was nothing to worry about. This is a nice side trip when you visit Cagayan.

8. Buntun Bridge

Buntun Bridge crosses the Cagayan River from Tuguegararo city to Solana. The bridge was made with 14 Japanese steel spans. It took three administrations to complete the structure, beginning in 1959 under former President Carlos P. Garcia. Constructions continued during the term of former President Diosdado Macapagal, but it wasn’t until 1969 that it was finally finished and officially opened under former President Ferdinand Marcos.

At 1,369 m, it’s the second longest bridge in the Philippines after the San Juanico Bridge and the longest among river bridges in the country.

The bridge is the gateway to Tuguegarao City. It offers an unobstructed view of the Cagayan River; thus, the bridge became a tourist attraction in itself. It’s also a good vantage point for photographing the Sierra Madre and Cordillera mountains and the sunset.

9. Dumasag River

Dumasag River is located in Sitio Limbus, Barangay Rapuli, Sta Ana. The National Irrigation Authority originally intended the river to become a water resource for the rice fields in the area. Later on, it was developed into a tourist attraction due to its natural beauty.

Visit the Dumasag river and experience the slow and chill vibe of the province. You can go swimming here, slide down the makeshift waterslides, rent a tent, relax, and interact with the friendly locals.

10. Sierra Cave

The Sierra Cave is a living karst cave in Cagayan Valley situated in Peñablanca. It’s included in the 300 caves identified by the National Museum of the Philippines.

You will be amazed to see the beautiful limestone formations as well as the stalactites and stalagmites inside the cave. While the cave is generally easy to navigate, some tunnels are so narrow getting through them is going to be quite an experience. One such tunnel is Celica’s Passage, which is only 2 feet in diameter.

11. Buwacag Falls

Bucawag Falls is situated in Barangay Sta Clara, in the municipality of Sta. Ana. It’s part of Cagayan’s eco-50-hectare tourism site. The name “bucawag” means the deafening sound of flowing waters. The site is being preserved and managed by the Bucawag Eco-Tourism Association or BETA.

If you’re up for some physical challenge in exchange for the breathtaking views of the waterfalls and a refreshing dip in the natural pools, you should visit Bucawag. You will trek through the thick forest, past several rivers and different tiers of waterfalls. The trek is going to be challenging as the rocks are slippery, but there are safety ropes along the trail so you can definitely do it.

12. St. Peter’s Cathedral

St. Peter Metropolitan Cathedral is a Baroque church built in the 18th century. It is also known as Tuguegarao Cathedral, and you can find it at Barangay Centro 10, Tuguegarao City. The church used to be the seat of The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tuguegarao, founded by Dominican friars.

Whether religious or not, you will be astonished by the beautiful architectural design of the church. Made with sand, gravel, cement, mortar, steel, and bricks, the church has withstood the test of time, including World War II, where it suffered tremendous damage. It has since been restored and is now considered one of the most important historical landmarks in Tuguegarao city.

13. San Vicente Port (Santa Ana)

San Vicente Fish Port is an anchorage in Dugo, San Vicente Road, in the municipality of Sta Ana. This is the jump point for island-hopping activities, including the boat trip to Palaui Islands.

The port is not just a starting point for every island hopping activity but a destination in itself. There, you can watch the fishermen and boatmen as they go about their day. If you want a glimpse of local living, this is one of the best spots to do it.

14. Iguig Calvary Hills

Iguig Cavalry Hills is located on Cagayan Valley Road in the municipality of Iguig. It’s a known pilgrimage site in Cagayan, especially during the Holy Week or the Lenten Season. It was built in 1892, and it has 14 stations of the cross and a church called San Antonio de Galicia.

Even if you’re not Catholic, the Calvary Hills is an exciting tourist destination. It sits on top of a hill, offering a scenic view of gentle green slopes and the Cagayan River.

15. Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Piat

The Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Piat, also known as Basílica Menor de Nuestra Señora de Piat, is located at Poblacion, Piat. It’s considered the Pilgrimage Center of Northeast Luzon. The church dates back to 1604 and is home to Madonna Our Lady of Piat, a brown-colored image of the virgin mary that is over a century old. It’s also a pilgrimage site, attracting many devotees, especially during the Sambali Festival and the feast of Our Lady of Piat, both are celebrated in July.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Piat is one of the 18 minor basilicas in the Philippines; for this alone, it’s worth checking out. The church is made of bricks with a curved wooden ceiling. Its simplicity makes the church unique, as most old churches in Cagayan have more lavish interiors and designs.

The Saint Peter Metropolitan Cathedral, commonly known as the Tuguegarao Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic Church that was originally constructed by Dominican friars during the 18th century. It stands along Rizal Street, Barangay Centro 10 in Tuguegarao and it was built with the Baroque-style in mind.

Sto. Domingo de Guzman Church in Nueva Segovia

This is a colossal church built with red bricks was built back in the late 1500s. Among the three churches that were built in Lal-lo during that time, the Santo Domingo de Guzman Church is the last one. San Jacinto de Polonia Church, Camalaniugan

Japanese Tunnel

The presence of abandoned Japanese tunnels in many parts of the country also became urban legends and telltales about haunted places, the Yamashita treasure and the interests of some treasure hunters, and many chilling stories of death and suffering told across generations.

During the Second World War, the Japanese imperial army bore tunnels using manual and hard labor involving Filipino prisoners of war and Japanese conscripts. The tunnels served as a hideout for Japanese soldiers to escape the eyes of American and Filipino soldiers. It was also a way for their covert operations.

The Japanese tunnels offer a unique experience to intrepid travelers who enjoy adventures and explorations. This was designed like a network of branching and intersecting tunnels. In the middle part of the tunnel, you can find a water-filed well.

Shell Midden Sites of Magapit and Bangag

The sandy beds of the Cagayan River make it suitable for shellfish to thrive. Archeological studies confirm that the gathering of clams in this part of Cagayan dates back to the Neolithic age.

There are several shell middens in barangays of San Lorenzo, Catugan, and Alaguia, Sta. Maria, Catayauan, Magapit, and Bangag. In Magapit, the shell middens are at the top of the hill. The deposit is 800 meters from the riverbank and has a panoramic view of the Cagayan River. Bangag shell midden sits on the Magapit site. This site has a deposit of 100 meters in diameter and 2.8 meters (9 feet).

About four (4) kilometers from Lal-lo are the Catayauan shell middens. The deposit extends about 500 meters long, 100 meters wide, and two meters deep. Not so far from Catayauan is the Santa Maria shell midden deposits. The middens are located upstream Cagayan River with a distance ranging from 30 to 50 meters that stretches up to one (1) kilometer. Other locations include the riverbanks of San Lorenzo, Catugan, and Alaguia. Accompanying the discovery of shell middens in these sites is the unearthing of various stone tools, pottery sherds, and earthenware. These indicate Neolithic Age when the early people started domesticating animals, planting crops, and developing craftsmanship by making tools, pottery, and other home implements. These are critical findings in establishing the presence of communities in pre-historic Cagayan.

Santo Entierro

Abulug is also home to the oldest Santo Entierro in the province. The Santo Entierro refers to the image of the dead Jesus Christ.

The venerated image is usually dressed in garment made of finest silk or softest velvet with ornate embellishments like laces and lace trims, gimp, and beaded or sequined trims that take the floral patterns or religious symbols.

What makes Iguig pottery distinct is its clay with its reddish-brown color. Iguig clay deposits, which took hundreds of years to form, are abundant in the vast alluvial plains along the Cagayan River.

Back in the day, the adult male members had the task of gathering clay. Traditionally, boys would tag along and learn about what and where to get the best clay material for pottery from. It is through this process that the Itawes handed over this indigenous knowledge from one generation to the next.

A veritable Cagayan symbol, the art of pottery and brick-making thrives in three (3) small barangays of Atulu, Gammad, and Malabbac. However, it is in Atulu where many artisanal potters and brick-makers flourish, and almost every household engages in the craft.

Sarakat Bags

The municipality is known for its indigenous weaving tradition. It has become known for its Sarakat-made ikamen or banig (woven mat) and sinamay made of piña or banana fiber.

Sarakat is the local term for pandan leaves endemic to the town. The Sarakat conservation, regulation, and propagation initiative is continuously conducted. The municipality developed the weaving industry in 2006 with only 15 women weavers. They organized Sarakat Movers which eventually evolved and grew into Santa Praxedes Sarakat Weavers Association.

Pamplona is gifted with resource-rich estuaries in Cagayan. Along these estuaries are villages with vast nipa mangroves.

Using their age-old traditions and technology, they transform the nipa sap (also called  tata ) into a local wine called  binarayang, vinegar or  silam,  and palm sugar called issi.

A homegrown craftsman, Danilo Utanes learned about playing harp at age 12 under the tutelage of his late father who earned a living from making harps. He was only a high school freshman when he made his first harp. Over the years, he toiled to perfect his craft with other Cagayano harpists.

His effort did not go unnoticed. In 1996, he joined a group of harpists from Cagayan to “Dayaw: Philippine Cultural Communities Arts Festival.” It was a project of the Cultural Center of the Philippines to showcase the Filipino indigenous culture and arts. Since then, he has been invited to many performances and exhibitions like the annual “Indigenous People’s Visual Arts Exhibit” in Tuguegarao City. Danilo has become famous and is even known to be the last harp maker in Cagayan Valley. At 64 years old, this artisan is ready to impart his craft to interested and able craftsmen of the next generation.

Danilo takes on commissions for his diatonic harps (non-pedal) with the characteristic round sound holes at the rear middle stave (flat soundboard). He uses tonewoods like narra, langka, and santol for their bright and sharp tones.

Every product made from bakong leaf and fiber is the result of hard work, creativity, and a realization of the dreams of Santa Teresita for its people. Workers and members of the Laguna De Cagayan Handicrafts Association (LCHA) to participate in their community organization takes precedence.

Making bakong products combines traditional and modern technology. The upright loom weaving resonates with their rich llocano heritage. Meanwhile, adopting appropriate and modern-day technology for fiber extraction and product design mirrors its openness to change and development. Bakong fiber blends well with commercial cotton to weave a tapestry or fabric. You can only stand in awe of how a leaf transforms into a fine cloth to create your traditional barong or terno , everyday dress, or as an accent to modern and high fashion couture. On the other hand, the versatility of twined bakong ropes enables seasoned weavers to create fashionable bags, utility baskets, containers, and decorative home items.

Kaggu Craze

One local exotic delicacy of Pamplona, Cagayan is a mangrove clam locally known as Kaggu (Anodontia edentula).  Enjoy kaggu as broiled, baked, mixed with vegetables, or as a soup.

Those who are into the more exotic fare eat kaggu as fresh or kinilaw which means marinating the clam meat in vinegar, salt, and black pepper. Add extra flavor by garnishing the dish with tomato, shallot, and siling labuyo (red chilli pepper) for that spicy kick.

The estuary and the swamp along river teem with nipa grove. The abundance of nipa makes it possible for Abulug to perfect its tradition and practice in  tata winemaking.

Entrepreneurial souls who partner with the local and national government agencies enable them to produce other non-traditional nipa products. Abulug offers locals and travelers palm vinegar and sweet  kaong.

Abulug Seafoods

With the river and the sea, the town of Abulug is a food basket on its own. Several shrimp and prawn farms along the river have made Abulug one of the known seafood centers in Northern Cagayan.

At every feast and special occcasion, plates of seafood take the centerpiece of the spread. When in Abulug, partaking in the seafood feast is another mouth-watering experience one must never miss.

Eating the diminutive, but savory  gakka  is like a pastime. It has been a practice for many generations in this part of Cagayan. Fisherfolks gather gakka on the shallow seawaters using a  tako , a wooden pole with a scraper, or a scoop made of bamboo or metal wire woven into a mesh resembling a basket, serves as a filter or strainer.

The shell gatherers scrape the bottom of the sea with the mesh that filters the  gakka shells and separates them from the sand.

Kutim  is the way Abulugueños consume gakka. It involves cracking the  gakka with the teeth, akin to nibbling on a watermelon or squash seeds.

Royal Bibingka

Ballesteros has attained that level of acclaim and esteem among royal  bibingka  makers.

The secret of  bibingka  is the right temperature to attain the gumminess. Traditionally, cooking bibingka uses an earthen hulmahan (mold)between lit charcoals. And only a  kakanin  expert will know the right temperature and how much charcoal to burn.

Traditional Cagayano dishes will not be complete without this main ingredient- aramang or alamang (soft-shelled shrimp). Adding aramang to dinengdeng, pinakbet,  or okoy releases an inviting aroma and gives that distinctive umami to these traditional dishes. Cagayanos use it fresh, dried for a longer shelf-life, or processed into shrimp paste.

This species endemic to the Cagayan River estuary has a distinct pink color. Aparri has become synonymous with aramang that it holds the Aramang Festival as part of its town fiesta. It is a tribute to the hard-working Aparrianos who enjoy the economic benefit from this God-given resource. It is a culmination of Aparri’s success in making aramang its One-Town-One-Product (OTOP) enterprise.

Buguey takes pride in its iconic old church named after the Mother of Mary, St. Anne. Constructed in the 17th century, it features white-washed columns on its brick-laden façade. The fountain in front of the church also serves its distinct mark. Having undergone a substantial reconstruction and restoration, the church now takes pride in its well-kept and spotless exteriors and interiors. The colorful stained glass windows on the thick white walls add spectacle and color to the interior’s natural and artificial lighting setup. You won’t miss the contemporary lighting behind the wooden cross on its nave.

While the modern-day lighting design gives the impression of lightness and comfort, the exposed beams and the higher and whiter ceilings allow that perception of a bigger space. Meanwhile, the centerpiece of the church-its restored baroque-style wooden retablo and the transept altars now shine in their majestic golden finish. Like other churches in Cagayan, the St. Anne Church shares a tragic past. Fate had it when in 1732, a fire gutted the church and the adjoining convent. Only the façade remained of the original structure and was reconstructed to its present-day look.

For 331 years, from 1680 until its last renovation and dedication in 2011, the St. Peter Gonzales of Thelmo parish Church has been a living witness to its tragic, but colorful past. Aparri was a victim of severe disasters like typhoons, floods, earthquakes, fire, and wars for many centuries. The church was never out of danger, but it rose like a phoenix from the ashes. It had to undergo relocation and seemingly countless renovations and reconstructions until it achieved a more contemporary appearance.

Despite its new look, the church still pays homage to its original baroque architectural design reflected in its façade, ornate interior arches, and exquisite retablo. indeed, the rebuilding process demonstrates Aparriano’s indomitable faith and tenacity that despite each catastrophe, Aparrianos have only pushed to rebuild and emerge more determined and resilient.

Cape Engano Lighthouse

The summit of Cape Engaño opens to the greenery, deep blue sea, and an endless horizon. It is a sensory treat pleasing every island visitor to have a 360-degree view of Palaui’s rugged cliffs and craggy coastlines, vast grasslands and valleys, uninhabited islands, and white coral beaches.

Belt Fishing

Fisher folks usually catch the large head hairtail or beltfish using ‘kariti’. You have to have patience for this activity as beltfishing takes time before you get a good catch. And with that said, nothing beats the feeling of excitement when you suddenly feel your line being pulled over by your fish.

It is pretty daunting to be walking on top of the caldera. Seeing fumaroles emitting steam and volcanic gases is a unique experience. With safety precautions, trekkers need the help of certified local guides to make this a safe and rewarding adventure. Mount Cagua is an active volcano with recorded explosions in 1860 and 1907. Notable are its two fumaroles (openings on the earth’s surface) in the northern and southern parts of the caldera.

Claveria Cove (Claveria Boulevard, Lakay-Lakay Rock Formation)

Legend has it that the iconic twin rock formations adorning the northern boundary of Taggat Lagoon were a wealthy, but uncharitable couple who refused an elderly couple any help when they came and asked for some of their fish catch.

In punishment for their offense, their only son (ubing-ubing), playing on the eastern coast was turned into a rock. In deep anguish, and even before they repented, the couple eventually transformed into bodies of rock in the middle of the sea. Hence, the twin rocks called Apo Lakay-lakay and Apo Baket-baket.

Taggat Lagoon

The lagoon acts as a sentinel protecting moored fishing boats from big waves and typhoons. Living along the coast of this cove is a fisherfolk community. Explorers can do some rock climbing to have a better view of the small cove and the lagoon.

Compared to more popular surf sites, surfing and skimboarding are relatively nascent water sports in this part of the country. Aparri is one of the only known 14 surfing spots in the Philippines. Characterized by right-and-left-hand beach breaks, the waves in Aparri are suitable for beginners, intermediate, and advanced surfers. Weather permitting, intermediate and advanced surfers can enjoy the waves that peak up to 6 feet from August to March. Beginners can train when the waves are less daunting from April up to July.

The Tocolana Ruins

The Tocolana Church was built during the 17th century but faced nature’s wrath over time. It collapsed during the November 30, 1619 earthquake. After its rebuilding, it continued to suffer from the ravages of nature like the flood of 1687, earthquake (1721), typhoon (1845), and earthquake (2022). The Compaña General de Tabacos Filipinas (1881) repurposed the complex and the remaining foundation by building its offices and warehouse for tobacco products. This complex did not survive the shelling of the American Air Force during the Second World War in 1945.

Since then, the church complex has not been restored and continued to be decrepit until its recognition as a place of historical and cultural significance.

Today the Tocolana Church ruins take pride in having well-kept lawns and charming flower gardens that visitors can enjoy.

With the wrath of nature always at its doorstep, building, repairing, and rebuilding three (3) times over was not an easy feat. They had to vacate and rebuild in a much higher and safer place. Said to be the third church built in Cagayan (ca. 1596), the church was consumed by fire (1719) and rebuilt in 1746. Within a century, it tried to survive typhoons and flooding until its final days after the earthquake of October 7, 1845. It is rugged, weather-beaten, covered with moss and vegetation-an undeniable fact that it had seen better days. It is where people once assembled, sang, and prayed. At this moment, the ruins of San Jacinto de Polonia Church now only offer silence, a breathing space, or perhaps a place for artistic creation.

Be in tune with nature in a quiet place beside the grand Cagayan River. The rustling of leaves, humming of summer’s cold and warm breeze, birds singing, and burbling river become a beautiful ensemble of sensory experiences. Most of all, it allows everyone to see and feel the sublime while imagining the once impressive things that happened in this place.

7 Tourist Spots for Your CAGAYAN ITINERARY

Cagayan is a region that has rugged but stunning landscapes, pristine beaches and, in some cases, a middle-of-nowhere ambiance that makes it an ideal getaway destination. It also has a rich cultural heritage with a number of old churches. The easiest way to reach this destination is to take a direct flight to Tuguegarao City from Manila. You also have the option to take the longer route, which is by bus. The travel time is approximately 12 hours one way. If you’re planning to visit the region, here are some of the things to do and places of interest.

Visit Callao Cave

This cave is a famous attraction for both locals and tourists. Its chambers are massive, and you’ll feel like a dwarf once you walk inside. You’ll see the rugged beauty of Mother Nature when you explore. You’ll see all sorts of formations inside that take on different shapes. There is a chamber called the ‘Chapel’ which is a section of the cave that has been turned into a cathedral. The best time to visit is when the sun is at its peak. During this time, you’ll see light dramatically fall into the cave through a wide opening. There’s an entrance fee of P20. Callao Cave is accessible by private and public transportation.

Palaui Island-hopping Escapade

This popular beach destination is within the confines of Sta. Ana, located in the northeastern part of Luzon. To reach the jump-off point from Tuguegarao City, board a bus or van bound for Sta. Ana. The trip takes about three hours and costs approximately P250. Once in town, get on a tricycle going to San Vicente Port; this will cost P15. Here you’ll find boats to take you island-hopping or just go to a specific destination for a fee. A combo trip going to Crocodile Island, Punta Verde, Anguib Beach, and Cape Engaño costs around P3500. This boat can accommodate up to 8 people. The lowest rate offered is P500 for short rides to Crocodile Island or Pugo Moro. Some places may cost up to P1800 because of their distance

The trip will take you to beaches with powdery, bleach-white sand, azure waters, and beautiful views. Go walking or jogging along the shore. Dip in the waters to cool off, work on your tan, take several photos or just chill. The landscapes characterized by rolling hills, rugged rock formations and coves are all stunning.

This river plays an important role in the lives of the locals as its water is used for irrigation. This is also where you can go boating during your visit. Wait until the day is about to end to board a boat and go for a ride. This is when you’ll see several bats blotting out parts of the sky. Jump into the Waters of Blue Waterfalls

This stunning waterfall located in Baggao is the perfect place to cool off in. It takes around two hours of trekking to reach this attraction, but it is worth the effort. Blue Falls stays true to its name because of the color of its water. Wash off the sweat and douse the heat by jumping into its cool lagoon.

Cross the Buntun Bridge

This bridge, stretching from Tuguegarao to Solano and measures around 1360m, is one of the longest river bridges in the country. It cuts through rice paddies and plains with views of the mountains in the distance. You can jog through or walk from one end to the other while taking in the beautiful surroundings.

It is also a transportation center to other provinces or barangays within the province’s confines. You can easily find transport to Sta. Camping is an option for adventure seekers. Punta Verde is an island in Palaui where you can pitch a tent and stargaze at night. Bring your own equipment, if you don’t want to pay extra to rent one. Bring enough food and water for the duration of your stay.

Tuguegarao City, the capital city of Cagayan Valley, is a popular destination in the northern part of the Philippines. It hosts various sightseeing spots and exciting activities, making it well worth a visit.

Tuguegarao City is home to the Buntun Bridge, one of the longest bridges in the country, and the Spanish colonial era kiln Horno Ruins, where they fired the bricks used to build the Tuguegarao Cathedral and San Jacinto chapel. Cagayan Province is a bio-diverse province in the Cagayan Valley Region in the Philippines. Its capital is the City of Tuguegarao. It’s bordered by mountains, has plains and valleys, and different bodies of water. The largest river, Cagayan River which flows’ begins in Quirino also passes by Cagayan Province.

The total area of Cagayan Province is 9,295.75 square kilometers (3,589.11 mi). The vastness and appeal of Cagayan has resulted it in becoming the host of the 27 th and 28 th seasons of the American reality show, Survivor in 2013. The province has an extensive shoreline and boasts of activities like whale watching (Cagayan Islands), snorkeling and scuba diving as well as fishing (Palaui Island). It relies on corn, rice, peanuts, fruits and beans, fishing and woodcraft like hardwood, rattan, bamboo and other types of woodworks.

Visit Palaui Island

Palaui Island was listed by CNN as one of the top 10 beaches in the world. It’s a certified eco-tourism area and where several water sports can be enjoyed by visitors and people who like fishing. The marine life of Palaui is very colorful and the island houses one of the two lighthouses built during the Spanish colonization, Cape Engano. This lighthouse is still functioning properly.

Watch Pottery Making and Blacksmithing

The Atulu Pottery Village in Iguig has natural red clay soul which is used in their pottery making. Its locals are artisans in the pottery world and they have been doing it for a long time. They make different designs and sizes.

Blacksmithing in Tuguegarao City is still prospering. They still do it in Larion Bajo. They make knives in different sizes and it’s a must-have pasalubong if you pass by the province or visit. You can also ask some locals if you can watch their blacksmithing procedure.

Visit Callao Cave

Callao Cave is a limestone cave found in Peñablanca, Cagayan Province. It’s one of the best tourist attractions in Cagayan due to its 300 caves around the area. Some of the caves along with Callao have been properly documented by the National Museum of the Philippines. Callao Cave is accessible by car but you can ask a tricycle driver to bring you there if you don’t have a car. The cave system of Callao is made of seven chambers having gaps for the light to peek through. The chambers used to be nine but due to an earthquake in the 80s, it decreased to seven. The largest of all the chambers is the first one which has been made into a chapel. Entrance Fee is Php25.

Swim in Pinacanauan River

This river is the largest arm of the Cagayan River. It’s the water source for irrigation and other purposes of the area and it’s also where the water from the farmlands goes to when it’s raining. The river can be found along Callao Caves National Park. It’s a site for whitewater rafting and kayaking since it has Class I and II rapids. Visitors can also go boating and swimming in calmer parts. Mountains surround the area which is popular for hiking, spelunking, and climbing activities.

Visit Baggao‘s Blue Lagoon

The small municipality of Baggao has a beautiful secret. It’s where you can find Blue Lagoon. Blue Lagoon depicts paradise with its stunning views of the water, rare plant species, wild animals, and some rock formations. There’s also a cave by the area. You need to trek for two hours to rich the blue and clear lagoon.

Visit St. Peter’s Cathedral

Also called Tuguegarao Cathedral and the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tuguegarao, it’s where the relics of Sts. Peter and Paul II can be found. The church was built during the Spanish Colonization period. It has an 18th-century Baroque architectural design and its belfry is one of the biggest in the Cagayan Valley Region. A visit to this church can inspire strength and hope in life.

Visit Nassiping Church Ruins

This is the ruins of a centuries-old church that is located in a spot where it’s facing both Cagayan and Chico River. Some of its parts are still intact like the stone side altars and the bell tower. This is the perfect spot for abandoned photography sessions.

Watch Rice and Corn Planting

Rice and corn are the agricultural gems of Cagayan Province. The province is the second-highest corn-yielding province in the Philippines and third place for rice-yielding. You can watch farmers plant their seeds (binhi) during the planting season and learn about the method. You can also ask some locals where you can watch coffee, mungo (mung bean), and sugarcane planting. They also plant peanuts.

Watch Aggao Nac Cagayan Festival

This week-long festival celebrates the establishment of the province’s civil government which happened in June 29, 1583. They hold different activities for this yearly event. They held cycling events, contests, dog show, creative writing, mural design exhibits, a job fair, coastal clean-up and many more during their celebration last June.

Go on a Foodie Tour

The foodie tour of Cagayan is an interesting one. First, the province uses carabeef and other carabao food items extensively. Their original pancit batil patong makes use of minced carabao meat. Second, they make a sweet dessert made of steamed glutinous rice and filled with grounded peanuts.

They make delicious Ybanag longganisa which is made, again of carabeef and has a load full of garlic. Their chicharabao is another carabao product but this one’s made of carabao skin that has been deep fried. Their most unique dish is lumot which is served with seafood. This is a kind of green algae and has a salty taste. They also have different pasalubong items that you can bring home to your family like carabeef tapa and carabao milk candies.

Cagayan Province’s stunning terrain and man-made attractions has put it in a must-visit level. The wonderful spots you can visit while in this province are endless. The serene surroundings and clean environment of Cagayan Province is the perfect destination for everyone who wishes to learn about history, different food preparations, long-forgotten crafts, and nature-tripping.
