They are great with every aspect of customer service. Helped my elderly father and aided him with using the restroom.

Even though it was a very full flight, the service was still excellent, the plane did not feel too cramped and cabin crew made a sincere effort to help passengers find overhead space for stowing luggage.

Extra seat belt across the chest 10 minutes before taking off and 15 minutes before landing seemed excessively safe.

The transfer from Domestic and International was a bit confusing but I am easily confused. I did not eat any food, but the food on the other leg was decent. It was nice they turned the lights off on the night flight. The plane was in good shape, but was a little cramped in economy and I am small. They gave me a customs form to fill out and nobody looked at it as I went through customs. Not a bad flight.

My case was missing a wheel on arrival Heathrow and the staff were unhelpful when i tried to get some compensation stating it was not sufficient damage, i only wish that they at some point have to deal with the same situation it put me in, maybe they would change their attitude but overall it was a good flight

My first course flight (Aor-Kul) was cancelled in the morning, and they asked me to board the night flight hence I need to transit overnight for the 2nd flight (Kul-Myy) that supposed to be on the same day. The overnight stay was not provided, (I'm traveling with my spouse, a daughter (5 y.o.) and an infant (2 months old). Hence I booked Sama Sama Hotel at my own expense (fortunately using my enrich miles points). Other than this issue, all services is good.

My experience with the flight was okay. My experience checking in was absolutely terrible. I was told I needed to change my e-ticket number to check in because I missed my flight in PDX. Even when shown the itinerary, they didn't budge and sent me to KLM across the airport. KLM wasn't open until 8pm and my flight was at 7:30pm. Nobody made accommodations in any way to get me to KUL. To add insult to injury, they rescheduled my flight to the very next day, creating a very long layover and did not offer any hotel stay. After this, even worse, I found out later they delayed the first 7:30pm flight to 9:10pm. Meaning, I could have still boarded but they refused to even try to get me on the plane. As a result, I missed a day of work and lost pay for the day. Also, when I went to get my luggage, it wasn't there. It was STILL in Singapore. They had from 5:30pm to 5am to get my luggage onto the plane and they still couldn't get that right. This is the worst experience I've had flying anywhere in the past decade I've been travelling.

Thai Air Asia no longer has customer support that you can call and talk to. All support is done by chat bot or self help websites. This can be a major issue if you have a problem and it bit us so we can’t recommend nor will we book with them again unless as a last resort.

No way to talk to support. Is all online self help or chat bot. Now way to speak to a person and the automated options are useless.

Airline cancelled our flight purchased through kiwi.com 2 months before travel and to date has inly refunded half of our paid ticket price.

Crew was nice, boarding efficient. VERY cramped seating. I'm a 5 ' 10'' slim woman and my knees were up against the seat in front of me and my arms were against the arm rests. There are no services, not even water, and they only take local currency and I didn't yet have Thai baht ( flying from Indonesia and no rupiah left). I won't choose to fly with this line again.

CNX is a filthy, poorly kept airport. I have heard that Thailand plans to build another airport in San Kampaeng area, so perhaps they are just letting this one go. But it makes every airline look badly to offer their service in such a poorly organized "dump". Sorry to say this, but that's what it's like. At least the AirAsia flight which I took was on time! I appreciate that.

I really like air Asia. The flights are running very professionally and both of my flights this last time got in early. Planes were clean. The staff was very professional and helpful. I understand they were supposed to be a budget airline but they don’t act like they’re a budget airline.

Second time flying on AirAsia. They’re fine for a low cost carrier, so I don’t expect high level hospitality. They could have informed us that the flight would be delayed even if by a few minutes, instead of the passengers asking the gate agents why we’re not boarding 8 minutes before takeoff. And given some of the passengers on this particular flight were problematic, the crew did great handling such people.

About Cambodia

Officially known as the Kingdom of Cambodia, this country is situated in the southern portion of the Indo-China Peninsula. The Angkor Wat historical park in Siem Reap province, the beaches in Sihanoukville and the capital city Phnom Penh are the main tourist attractions in Cambodia. The country offers tropical beaches, colonial buildings and abundance of natural attractions. The divergent facets of the kingdom provoke both the serious and casual travellers, who are always fascinated and sometimes perplexed by its mysteries.

The best tourist spots to visit in Cambodia

• Preah Vihear: Preah Vihear is a Khmer temple situated at the top of a 525-meter (1,722 ft) cliff in the Dangrek Mountains, on the border between Thailand and Cambodia.
• Sihanoukville: Also known as Kampong Som, Sihanoukville is a port city and beach resort located on the Gulf of Thailand.The main attraction consists of the white-sand beaches and several tropical islands.
• Tonle Sap: Tonle Sap is the largest freshwater lake in South East Asia and one of the greatest points of interest in the country. From November to May, the Tonle Sap drains into the Mekong River at Phnom Penh. However, when the year’s heavy rains begin in June, the flow of the Tonle Sap changes directions, and an expansive lake is formed.
• Silver Pagoda: Located within the Royal Palace compound in Phnom Penh, the Silver Pagoda houses many national treasures such as jewelled Buddha statues made of gold. Most notable is a small 17th-century baccarat crystal Buddha (the Emerald Buddha of Cambodia) and a life-sized gold Maitreya Buddha decorated with 9584 diamonds.
• Kratie: It is a tiny town situated on the banks of the Mekong River and is dominated by a central marketplace, surrounded by old French colonial buildings. Plenty of backpackers gather here during the peak season. Rare Irrawaddy dolphins can also be found here.
• Koh Ker: Koh Ker was the capital of the Khmer empire from the year 928 to 944 AD. Spectacular buildings and sculptures can be seen here. Prasat Thom is a 30 meter (98 ft) tall temple pyramid rising high above the surrounding jungle, and a giant Garuda (mythical half-man, half-bird creature) guards the top.
• Banteay Srei: Officially part of the Angkor complex, Banteay Srei, is built mostly of red sandstone, it lies 25 km north-east of the main group of temples, and it is often considered a separate Cambodian attraction.
• Bayon Temple: It is one of the most famous places in Cambodia. The Bayon Temple has over 200 massive stone faces looking in all directions. The curious smiling faces are astounding imageries of Angkor.
• Angkor Wat: Angkor Wat or the "City Temple", built in the 12th century, is the most magnificent and largest of all Angkor temples. The temple’s balance, composition and beauty make it one of the most beautiful monuments in the world.

How to Reach Cambodia from India

Tourists can travel to this place by booking flights with international airlines that fly to the Phnom Penh International Airport or the Siem Reap International Airport. Travellers from India can reach Cambodia by boarding flights, available from major Indian cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Bengaluru. Phnom Penh is the capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia. The city is an alluring attraction in its own right. The centre has broad appeal, and its French influence is evident in the open-fronted colonial shophouses that line the streets. There are a mind-boggling number of restaurants, bars and cafes to try. Many tourists that travel to Cambodia linger here for the culinary experience. You can also take a boat trip from Phnom Penh along the mighty Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers.

Siem Reap is Cambodia’s principal tourist town. This city offers a gateway to the temples of Angkor. More than one hundred Angkorian monuments lie spread over some 3000 square kilometres of the countryside around the town. Siem Reap retains its small-town charm despite its popularity. It’s a lively city with many activities and attractions including lively Psar Chas Market, buzzing cafes, bars, boutique shops and plentiful nightlife. It’s also a good spot from which to visit the nearby floating villages on the Tonle Sap.

Laidback Battambang is Cambodia’s second biggest city. It is worlds apart from Phnom Penh’s urban bustle. It has a growing number of ex-pats fuelling the growth of arty cafes, restaurants and bars. It’s also home to impressive colonial architecture. You can take a countryside ride on its quirky bamboo railway.

Kompong Cham is Eastern Cambodia’s largest city. The waterfront is particularly attractive, with a string of colonial buildings lined up along the Mekong.

Southwest Cambodia & The Southern Islands

Ochheuteal Beach and Serendipity Beach Road justify their party town reputation. There are quieter spots too, particularly around Otres, 6km away. Sihanoukville is also the entry point to the islands of Koh Rong, Koh Rong Samloem and Koh Ta Kiev. Koh Rong has a buzzing backpacker strip at Koh Toch. Ream National Park is 18km east of Sihanoukville. It’s a great place to explore Cambodia’s unspoilt natural environment. The riverside town of Kampot with the backdrop of misty Bokor mountains is one of Cambodia’s most appealing towns to add to your Cambodia trip itinerary. 25km southeast of Kampot, Kep is a favourite with ex-pats and Cambodians who descend at the weekend. Eastern Cambodia

Just over 20km from Kratie is Kampie which provides the best riverside vantage point to view a pod of rare freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins . Tucked away in the forest near the sleepy capital of Banlung in the Rattanakiri province, there is a trio of impressive nearby waterfalls Ka Chhang, Katieng and Chha Ong.

Figuring out the best time to travel Cambodia depends on what you plan to do when you arrive. Cambodia is warm all year round, but it has a rainy season too.

If you visit Cambodia between March and May, the temperatures and humidity are higher. Visiting at this time can still be a good choice if you are hitting the coast. If you are travelling Cambodia to explore the temples, the season between November and February is cool enough for sightseeing. December and January can be the most popular time for tourists.

Travel Cambodia in the rainy season, and you’ll find the countryside at its lushest. Travelling around Cambodia during this season can present some practical challenges and flooding is commonplace. However, the mornings are usually dry as the rain mainly falls in the afternoon. If you do choose to go visit in the rainy season, you’ll avoid the crowds too.

The busiest International Airports are Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. There aren’t any direct flights from Europe to Cambodia. When planning how to travel around Cambodia, consider the transport as part of the adventure.

Roads have seen massive improvements in the past five years, so getting around the country is much easier than it once was. The bus system provides connections between all major towns. The bus offers the cheapest and usually the most convenient way to travel.

Minibuses and ‘share taxis’ are also other options to travel by road. Share taxis are faster than taking the bus, but they do get absurdly packed. You can ask to pay roughly double the standard fare to have a front seat to yourself. You could also pay to hire the entire taxi.

For short local trips, you can hire a motorcycle or ‘moto’ for the day or a tuk-tuk. A tuk-tuk is a passenger carriage pulled by a motorbike. It’s virtually impossible to rent a self-drive car in Cambodia, but you can hire a car with a driver. Three-wheeled cycle rickshaws called cyclos are also available in Phnom Penh for short trips.

You may also end up travelling Cambodia by boat. Boat trips run between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, and between Siem Reap and Battambang. All foreign nationals except those from certain Southeast Asian countries need a visa to enter Cambodia. Tourist visas are valid for thirty days. The tourist visas are issued on arrival at all border crossings and airports. You will need two passport photos to get your visa. You can also take care of your tourist visa online in advance evisa.gov.kh. The e-visas are only valid at airports and the Poipet, Koh Kong and Bavet land crossings. Check the website for full details. E-visas take three days to process, and you still need to provide a digital photograph.

A tourist visa can be extended once for one month. Many travel agents and guesthouses can help you extend your visa for a commission. The main cities in Cambodia have several accommodation options and finding something is rarely a problem. There are basic hotels in every provincial town too. The budget accommodation can be very cheap at around $7 to 8$ per night. Most hotel rooms have a double bed as standard. Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville also offer tourist-orientated budget guesthouses and hostels. Hostels can be priced as little as $2 per night. Camping is theoretically illegal in Cambodia, but is a possibility in some places – for example, on the beaches and islands of the south coast.

Mid-range and luxury accommodation is usually only found around the tourist hotspots and major towns. Luxury accommodation is widely available in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Battambang, Sihanoukville and Kep. There are choices of five-star chain hotels, chic boutiques and idyllic resorts constructed in traditional Khmer style.

Cambodian food has influences from many other countries in Asia and French influence too. Cambodian food is milder than Thai food and often herbs, spices and chilli are served on the side rather than blended into the dish. Dishes are delicately enhanced with flavours like lemongrass and coriander. Cambodia’s national dish is bamboo-leaf infused fish amok. Stir-fries feature on most menus alongside delicious coconut milk curry dishes and rice.

Local variations of typical Vietnamese dishes can also be found too. French influences can also be found on the menus here with endless coffee options and French-style baguettes. You can find Khmer street food at markets and on street stalls. You can fill up on noodle dishes, filled baguettes and stir-fries.

Cambodians drink plenty of green tea and fruit shakes. Stalls are set up in towns all over the country from late afternoon. Also available is iced sugar-cane juice and the juice of green coconuts - all very refreshing. Cambodia has an increasing number of activities and sports. In the northeast, particularly in Banlung and Sen Monorom, local guides can lead groups or individuals on treks into the surrounding jungle and Virachey National Park. Treks can last anything from a day to a week. There is also good trekking in the forested hills around Koh Kong.

Diving in Cambodia

There are excellent opportunities to snorkel and dive in and around Cambodia. There are several PADI dive shops in Sihanoukville and nearby islands offering both certification and fun day trips.

Cycling and kayaking are available in the northeast around the Mekong River. Bike trips can be organised at Kratie, Stung Treng and around Angkor’s temples or the Cardamom Mountains.

Those that travel Cambodia will gain more respect from locals if they are well dressed. Both men and women dress conservatively. It’s best to avoid skimpy clothes and shorts unless you are at a beach resort. When visiting temples, it’s best to have both shoulders and legs covered. Remove your shoes before entering a Cambodian temple or Cambodian home. Cambodians themselves are conservative and do their best to keep clean and well presented.

It’s advisable to avoid any displays of public affection between men and women. Even visitors holding hands can be embarrassing for Cambodians.

The best time to visit Cambodia is between November and April, when it sees very little rain. During this time, you’ll see clear blue skies making it a great time to enjoy a relaxing getaway on the southern coast.

Outside of this period, humidity increases, and the rains come, assisting Cambodian farmers in the growing of their crops. However, you shouldn’t be deterred from travelling – the countryside is lush and green, rivers are full and flowing, and the temples are quiet. This is the best time to visit some of the outer-lying temples, which will often be deserted.

At the end of the summer one of Cambodia’s true wonders comes to life – The Tonle Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and home to Cambodia’s floating villages.

Indian passport holders need to have valid visa to visit Cambodia. Those wishing to travel to the kingdom of wonders have 3 ways to do so: Visa on arrival, Visa online (e-Visa), or visa applied via a Cambodian embassy.

Visa on arrival

There are two different types of visas that you can get on arrival: 

• The single-entry Cambodia Tourist visa (T-class) costs US $30, is valid for 30 days and can be renewed once for a further 30 days without leaving the country.
• If you know you will be staying in Cambodia for longer than 60 days, do not get a tourist visa. A renewable Cambodia Business visa (E-class) is a better option. This single-entry visa costs US $35 and is again valid for 30 days, after which you can extend it for longer period up to a year.

Visa on arrival is available at 3 international airports in Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, and Sihanoukville and various international border checkpoints with Vietnam, Thailand, and Laos.

Visa online (e-Visa)

Since 2006, Indian citizens may apply for an eVisa online for US$36 before arrival. It allows a single entry and a maximum stay of 30 days for tourism purposes.

The application can be done online via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs dedicated platform: https://www.evisa.gov.kh/

There are 7 immigration checkpoints that e-visas are accepted including:

After nearly two years of restricting international arrivals as part of Covid-19 prevention measures, Cambodia yesterday become the first country in Southeast Asia to drop the requirements for both pre-travel PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test and on-arrival rapid antigen test for fully vaccinated travellers into the Kingdom.

Cambodia has abolished the need for a PCR negative test obtained 72 hours before arrival and rapid test upon arrival in Cambodia. They also enable to visa-on arrival system on the strike to facilitate the reopening process of the tourism sector as reported on March 17th, 2022.

Cambodia Travel Guide – For Indian Citizens

My visit to Cambodia was unexpected and happened because my parents who recently shifted to Phnom Penh from India for dad’s small-term project. It took us a lot of time to actually finalize whether to travel, as tickets were expensive at the last moment. Talking to fellow bloggers and friends when I mentioned Cambodia all they had to guide me was about Angkot Wat. But then we decided to travel anyway thinking ‘we will figure it out’. Now that we are back, this is our Cambodia Travel Guide.

Cambodia travel guide – Our hack for dates

We utilized 3 weekends of August 2017 and took advantage of Indian festivals like  Rakshabandhan, Janmashtami  and Independence Day. We left on 5 th  August night (Saturday – packing day) and came back on 19 th August night (Saturday) as we need 1 day to relax, do laundry and get into the headspace to start working the next day. If you are adventurous you may leave on Friday night and be back on Sunday night giving you 2 more days. The month of August generally has long weekends with these festivals every year. If planned well in advance you can easily get 2 weeks. In 2016 we did a Manali-Leh road trip on similar dates.

Cambodia has had a volatile history. The country underwent horrifying genocide that was carried out by the Khmer Rouge regime (led by Pol Pot) between 1975 and 1979. Out of the 7 million population then, over 1.7 million died of starvation, execution, disease or overwork. Some estimates place the death toll even higher. The Khmer Rouge apparently arrested and killed all people from previous regime – including soldiers, politicians and bureaucrats, educated, capitalist and city people to grow rice and other agricultural products as Pol Pot wanted to develop Cambodia into a agrarian economy like the Angkor Empire in earlier days. When people complained they were tortured and killed, including women and children.

Fast forward to 2017, the country has good tourist’s spots, delicious food, the friendliest people, beautiful coastlines, and a lively nightlife. Still at a developing stage, the country which does not have any manufacturing units of its own is trying to spring back with better governance.

Flights to Cambodia from India

For Indians, Cambodia travel is quite easy and these are some of the options:

From Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi you will get connecting flights to Bangkok, Kaula Lampur or Singapore. Flights from these destinations are available to Phnom Penh (the capital) and Siem Reap and are of 1- 3 hours duration. Air Asia has many economy deals from Delhi and Bangalore to reach Phnom Penh so keep checking. My brother who traveled with us got a return flight from Bangalore – KL – Phnom Penh at INR 28,000 (US$430).

Cambodia Visa for Indian Citizens

For Indian travelers, Visa on Arrival can be obtained at Cambodia International Airports in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. The validity is 30 days. You will need:

• A completed visa application form (generally given to you on flight)
• A Passport with at least 6 months validity
• One recent photograph (4 x 6 cm)
• Visa fee in cash (US$25)

Pro tip: Download the visa application form from their embassy website and fill it in advance to save time and faster immigration

I was not asked a single question during the immigration process, nor was I asked to show any proof of accommodation or onward booking. It was too easy and I felt amused; wouldn’t you want to know the purpose.

Currency in Cambodia

Cambodia has its own currency called Cambodian Riels (KHR). 1INR = 63KHR and US$1 = 4050KHR. However, the country also uses USD officially so there is no real need to carry the local currency. Even street vendors and local drivers accept USD. However small change may be given back in KHR which can be easily utilized in purchasing water bottles or small souvenirs.

Cambodia travel guide and local transportation 

Tuk-tuk is the local way of getting anywhere in the city, even from the airport. It is like an Indian auto-rickshaw, a 3 wheeled automobile but bigger which can accommodate 4 people comfortably. If you have big bags from the airport, it can even accommodate that with 2 passengers. Be sure to negotiate a price in advance (usually not more than US$5-10 depending on the distance). If you are renting a driver for an entire day in any of the cities, it will cost you around US$25 (excluding tip).

For getting around to other cities, flights, as well as buses, are available. Buses are clean, cheap yet comfortable. If you opt for the night journey, air-conditioned sleeping coaches are available. They will give you polythene to store your footwear (so the bus doesn’t get dirty), water bottle and a blanket. The cost ranges from US$8 -15 one way per person. We travelled from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap in an overnight Gaint Ibis bus which took 6 hours.

Accommodation in Cambodia

Hotels, guest houses and hostels are easily available across all tourist destinations and the capital. The range starts around US$5-8 per night per person for hostels, mid-range hotels  around US$20-30 (including breakfast) and  luxurious hotels around US$60-80 (including breakfast). At times they may offer pick-up and drop services to the airport in that rate. WiFi is available in all accommodation as well as tourists’ spots and restaurants.

Food in Cambodia | Must try food in Cambodia

The local street food as well as in restaurants is quite cheap in Cambodia which includes a lot of sea food, crickets, spiders, ants and chicken. A meal on street can cost you US$2-3 and US$8-10 in restaurants. However, this is bland for Indian taste and us being vegetarians we had a tough time fighting the odour of the local dishes even on streets. Luckily we found vegetarian Indian restaurants in Phnom Penh, as well as Siem, Reap wherein a South Indian thali cost $8 per person and a la carte about $15-18 between 2 of us. There are also tons of fruit and dry fruit options which we relished all days – banana, jack fruit, lychee, dragon fruit, passion fruit, mangoes, the infamous durian, almonds, cashew nuts, etc. They are fresh and yummy.

Language, Culture, Tradition of Cambodia

• Cambodians traditionally greet with a Sampeah, it is like Indian ‘ Namaste ’, which involves pressing the palms together before the chest with a slight bow and greeting with a polite ‘Chumreap Suor’ and smile.
• Khmer is the official language of Cambodia.
• 90% of Cambodians follow Buddhism.

Things to do/see in Cambodia: Cambodia Travel Guide

Other than  Angkor Wat , there are many places of interest. While it is debatable if Angkor Wat is worth visiting , I highly recommend visiting the following places.

• Phnom Penh ,
• Sihanoukvill,
• Battambang,
• Koh Tonsay,
• Koh Ker, etc.

Safety in Cambodia

Cambodia is pretty safe for seasoned travellers, solo women travellers, backpackers and family in the city, buses or accommodation. Keep in mind the country wakes up super early – shops open at as early as 6:30 am and close at 5:00 pm – even the markets and retail stores. Only restaurants would be open past 6:00 pm. So when you go for dinner to a restaurant with a tuk-tuk driver, engage him for a ride back and pay him while sitting in the tuk-tuk. There have been instances of snatching while paying drivers or while carrying bags on isolated roads but very few incidents of mugging. But that is present in any city or tourist attraction in the world so you just have to be careful and alert.

This is funny yet serious but there is the danger of landmines in Cambodia. Not so much in the cities but watch out for them in woods, dry paddy fields or open areas. There is no estimate of how many are there but could range from a few thousand to a few million. It is not uncommon for someone to be injured in this way. In fact, there are many amputees in the country.

Best time to visit and plan Cambodia travel

The weather is generally hot and humid throughout the year. However, the ‘tourist’ season is from November to March as weather is a bit pleasant but it comes at a cost as the flight rates as well as hotel prices go up, even if you book a year in advance. For Indians, it really doesn’t make a difference as we have the same weather here.

Shopping in Cambodia: Cambodia travel guide

Traditionally arts and crafts include lacquerware, silk weaving, silverwork, stone carving, wood carving and basket making. They are available in stores as well as local markets. Be careful as wooden artefacts are sold as fake plastic ones with a higher price. The textile market is also booming in Cambodia. I have no idea where it comes from but it is super cheap. T-shirts and pants are as cheap as $2 and can be lesser if bought in bulk. There are night markets in all major cities – open till 11 pm.

Pro tip: Decide what you want to buy and head straight there otherwise you will end up spending much more on so many attractive things that are actually of no use 

What to wear in Cambodia

Since it is a hot and humid country, anything which is comfortable to you should be worn – preferably cotton t-shirts and shorts which will give ample protection to your skin. The country is liberal in terms of what you prefer to wear however you will be required to cover your shoulders (scarf is not allowed) and knees while visiting temples.

What to pack for Cambodia travel

Pack light. You will find everything from tea, branded toiletries to clothes in case you forget something. Other things:

• Comfortable footwear – you will be walking a lot in temples and museums. Although sports shoes will give you that comfort, you may be required to remove them while visiting temples way too many times that it will get annoying. Also with the hot and humid weather, the shoes get super sweaty. Try floaters, kittos, flip flops instead.
• Sunscreen – you will thank me for this. Trust me it is required everywhere.
• Water/fluids/snack – pack this for all your local sightseeing.
• Travel insurance – it’s a hot country, there are mosquitoes. You do not want to have malaria, dengue or even a viral throat infection. But in case you do, insurance is always handy. Buy one, which will cover your luggage loss or delay (saying from personal experience).
• All other things which you feel are important.

Sustainable tips for Cambodia Travel Guide: Things to do in Cambodia

• Do not use single-use or disposable plastic. Even if you do, do not litter it in any tourist area or any museums or archeological sites.
• Respect the ancient structures of temples and other structures by not sitting on them.
• Respect the places which prohibit photography.
• Do not write on the pillars and walls of archeological sites and temples.

An Indian Girl's Guide For First-Time Travellers To Cambodia 

The first time I saw a photograph of Angkor Wat, more specifically a sunrise at the temple, I was captivated. I simply just had to go. So, when the opportunity arose to visit Cambodia, I did my research before planning a quick trip. And I discovered that Cambodia had a lot more to offer than the South East Asian country just appealing to history buffs.

With a Cambodia travel guide, visiting the country should be a high on the travel list. Not only is it beautiful with an eclectic mix of history, beaches and waterways, the people are very friendly, the food outstanding and very pocket-friendly. Here's my Cambodia itinerary for you when you decide to visit the country:

Where is Cambodia?

For your Cambodia travel guide, it's important to know a brief history of the country. Cambodia is located in South East Asia, sandwiched between Thailand and Vietnam, with Laos on its north. Influenced greatly by Indian culture, trade and Brahmanism; the Hindu-Buddhist Khmer empire was vast and covered a big part of South East Asia until its fall in the 15th century. Apart from it's ancient heritage, a genocide was forced upon Cambodia under Pol Pot's regime in the 1970s. Cut away from the world, it was only in the 1990s that the country opened up to tourism. Today, though the streets are vibrant and abuzz with life, the genocide has left a deep impact on its population and Cambodia is still building upon its lost years.

How to reach Cambodia?

It's easiest to fly into Phnom Penh or Siem Reap via Bangkok from one of the major Indian cities. A multi-city ticket: Delhi-Bangkok-Siem Reap and then Phnom Penh-Bangkok-Delhi will be approx Rs 28000-31000. There are other more expensive options so choose your tickets carefully.

Are visas required in Cambodia?

Yes, visas are required to enter the country. One can either get them on arrival at the airports (Phnom Penh and Siem Reap) or at one of the various border checkposts if arriving by land. One can also get the visas beforehand from the embassy. The visa costs about $35 or Rs 3000.

Currency used in Cambodia

The local Cambodian currency is Riel but US dollars are widely used. $1 (Rs 66) is about 4000 Riel. It's easiest to carry dollars as its used in restaurants, hotels, transport facilities and shopping places. There are plenty of ATMs all around while credit cards are used.

When you plan your Cambodia itinerary, deciding on which places to go to, you'll find the best way to travel is on road. You will see the beautiful countryside and smiling faces of the locals. Also, it's less expensive than flying and the buses are very comfortable, tickets starting from about $6 (Rs 400). One can also hire a car because if there are people to split costs, it can work cheap, maybe just a little more than a bus fare. (For example, I hired a car from Siem Reap to Cambodia and found three others to share the cost. It worked out about $10 more than the bus fare but a more comfortable journey). To travel around the city, either walk, bicycle or hire a tuk tuk.

Where to stay in Cambodia?

When you're figuring out your Cambodia travel guide, it is possible to book your accommodation when you're in the country. However, during the tourist season prices can get a little high and places completely booked so it's advisable to book before going. Cheap hostel rooms or guesthouses range from $10-20 (Rs 650-1300) while mid-range ones would start from $50 (Rs 3500). Try recommended websites like Airbnb , Booking.com and Hostelworld .

Your Cambodia itinerary should be adventurous when it comes to food. The local stuff is absolutely delicious. Do not miss the Fish Amok, which is a like a souffle, with steaming hot rice. The beef Lok Lak is mouthwatering and the pork spring rolls are crispy and juicy. Cambodians consume a lot of rice, meat and vegetables on a daily basis. The flavours are bold and while there are fried insects on offer in some places, be brave and take a bite! Eating street food or even at a budget cafe doesn't hurt the pocket much as much, a meal costing between $2-$7. Beer ranges from $0.50-$2.

Places to see in Cambodia

A Cambodia itinerary should include a mix of history, adventure and fun. Instead of going back and forth, it's easier to follow a route. So, here's my Cambodia travel guide for the first-timers:

Start your Cambodia itinerary with Siem Reap. It's located in the northwest part of the country.

Explore the Angkor Complex

The majestic Angkor Wat is located there which is the biggest tourist attraction. Definitely allot 3-4 days to see the magnificent temple complex. Passes are sold in one-day ($37, Rs 2500), three-day ($62, Rs 4000) and seven-day ($72, Rs 4800) blocks and carrying them in the complex is mandatory. Start your Cambodia itinerary watching the sun rise over Angkor Wat. It's a beautiful photo-op so make sure to get a good spot near the lotus pond. Once you marvel at the reliefs and climb up the tower to get majestic views, explore the vast temple complex. Every temple in the Angkor complex, built from the 9th-15th century, is unique starting with Bayon Temple, Angkor Thom, Prasat Preah Khan, Ta Prohm, Banteay Srei, Neak Poan and a host of others. Either hire a car/tuk tuk to go around or use bicycles. Covering almost 400 sq km will take some time!

Floating Village of Kompong Khleang

There are various floating villages around Siem Reap. If you want an authentic experience, head to Kompong Khleang because of less crowd and very very beautiful. Made up of about 700 people on the Tonle Sap, the villagers own the boats and take you around the floating village. With authentic food on offer, it will be a day well spent.

Enjoy nightlife at Pub Street

Pub Street is Siem Reap's most popular night hangout. There are a host of pubs and restaurants along the street and tourists enjoying their cocktails and beers with a vast range of Khmer food. The restaurants are decently priced so you can enjoy a night about town without a major pocket pinch.

Continue your Cambodia travel guide from Siem Reap as you head to Battambang, also situated in the northwest. It's a sleepy town with a relaxed attitude and the region is Cambodia's major rice producer. If you want a break from bus journeys, why not take a boat? It will be slow but crowded but will give you a feel of rural Cambodia.

Ek Phnom Temple

This temple is Battambang's most popular temple and dates back to the 11th century. While Angkor is far more impressive, Ek Phnom has its own charm and very picturesque at sunset.

With the genocide wiping out most of Cambodia's art and culture, efforts have been made to revive its history. Young Cambodians dance, juggle, do stunts to music and shows are lively and fun at the Phare circus (Phare Ponleu Selpak) which is a multi-arts centre for children.

Bamboo Train Battambang

How do you see the green countryside? Ride on a bamboo train of course! A bamboo platform is set on two sets of bogies with a small motor at the back. One sits on the platform and the train rolls down the tracks. There was an apprehension whether the bamboo trains would be demolished by the government, but authorities have decided to continue with the tourist attraction and will rebuild the track elsewhere once the old track is demolished to make way for a proper railway track that connects to Phnom Penh.

Sihanoukville

From Battambang, continue your Cambodia itinerary with a beach relaxation at Sihanoukville in the south. Remember that the buses will first go to Phnom Penh and then you'll have to change to get to Sihanoukville. It's a long journey but totally worth the effort. The other option, if you want to reach directly, you will need to hire a cab but that will work out a lot more expensive.

Sihanoukville is famous for its various beaches. Some are very popular while others still relatively less crowded. Sip on coconut water, get a tan, build a sandcastle or actually wade into the water! It has a large tourist population but there's always room for one more. There are a host of brilliant eateries all around so getting a finger-licking meal at the end of the day won't be a problem.

Spend a day at Koh Rong Island

Till some years ago tourists didn't know about Koh Rong, Cambodia's second largest island. It's white beaches, turquoise waters and laidback atmosphere has visitors craving for more. After dark, the night life begins and goes on till late. If you are a night bird, this is definitely a place that will out to you!

A lazy beach mini-vacation and gorgeous tan later, make your way to the capital of Cambodia. You can't plan your Cambodia travel guide without stopping at Phnom Penh. From history to royalty, food to shopping, Phnom Penh has it all!

The Royal Palace complex is one of the biggest attractions. Though parts of the walled complex are closed to tourists, visitors can still access the different pavilions, throne room and the much-appreciated Silver Pagoda. The complex has beautiful gardens and its structures with golden pointed roofs make for beautiful photographs. Then head to the National Museum to get a taste of Cambodian history.

For tourists to understand what the country had gone through during the Pol Pot regime and what Cambodia was like during the ancient times, various shows are held across the city through the medium of song and dance. It's a sort of reviving their traditional stories and songs for the younger generation. It's a show well worth the watch and proceeds go back to the organisations that work in the arts.

Oudong Mountain

Located around 45 minutes away from the city, Oudong was Cambodia's old capital. It's a UNESCO world heritage site and atop a hill from which one can get a view of the paddy fields. One has to climb 502 steps to reach the top but the views are well worth the effort.

Killing Fields

During the Pol Pot regime in the 1970s, almost 1/3 of the population was wiped out. The Killing Fields are a mass grave site during the Khmer Rouge. There is a pagoda where skulls and bones of many killed are displayed in memory. Take an audio tour and you won't be able to hold back your tears as you hear survivors explain their plight during those terrible years.
