Yes, traveling to Russia as a tourist in 2023 is possible. Here’s what to look out for if you’re preparing for your dream trip. 

Visa requirements

First things first, it is worth checking if you need a visa to cross the Russian border. In 2023, citizens of some 65 countries can visit Russia without a visa. This includes most of the post-Soviet states like Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, as well as Ukraine.

Additionally, citizens of some countries in South and Central America – including Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Panama, Peru, Venezuela, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Uruguay, Ecuador – do not need a visa to travel to Russia.

Citizens of Israel, South Africa, Cuba, Montenegro, Thailand, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Andorra, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Mongolia, Botswana enjoy visa-free regime with Russia, too.

Is it safe to travel to Russia right now?

Russia as a travel destination received a fair share of negative PR from various sources in early 2022.

Some official travel accounts run by governments of countries like the U.S. , Australia , Great Britain and others advise their citizens to abstain from non-essential travel to the country.

That said, it is always advisable to evaluate safety risks when traveling to any foreign country. Traveling to Russia is no exception. However, Moscow, St. Petersburg and other major Russian cities have been widely regarded as being safe , especially in comparison to other popular tourist destinations.

Little has changed in major Russian cities from the point of view of tourists or local residents. Consequently, the most extreme and vocal concerns over security may be disregarded as being too alarmist.

That said, logistics pose the greatest challenge for tourists traveling to Russia in 2023. A number of countries closed their national airspace for Russian air companies resulting in more complicated logistics for tourists who intend to visit Russia in 2023.

However, specific changes depend on a particular country from where a tourist departs. In some cases, direct flight routes remain intact. For example, nothing has changed for tourists from China, India, Turkey, Middle Eastern countries and the majority of post-Soviet states. They can book direct flights to Russia’s main airports.

Tourists departing from European capitals will have to book connecting flights via Turkey or countries in the Middle East. This makes tickets more expensive and flights longer. However, it is still possible to travel to Russia from virtually any country in the world.

It should be noted that every country has its own nuances that must be taken into account beforehand. For example, the Indian Embassy in Russia advises Indian nationals against traveling to Russia via third countries. According to the embassy website, Indian travelers should choose only direct flights from Delhi to Moscow, otherwise they risk being denied entry into Russia.

In another instance, the British government prohibited its citizens from purchasing tickets on Russian airlines that were under sanctions. Nonetheless, the British authorities made an exception for those journeys originating in or within Russia: in this case, British nationals may purchase tickets from Russian companies without breaching UK sanctions.

Covid restrictions, vaccination status & quarantine

In 2022, Russian authorities canceled Covid-related restrictions for Russian citizens and foreign tourists, alike.

In 2023, foreign nationals no longer need to provide results of a negative PCR test when entering Russia by any mode of transport. Therefore, foreign travelers no longer need to take a coronavirus test in advance before departure.

Furthermore, Russian authorities lifted Covid-related restrictions that required visitors to provide a specific reason for visiting the country facilitating tourist traveling.

The only remaining Covid-related regulation is a requirement to fill in a questionnaire. Passengers – both Russian and foreign citizens – will be asked to fill out the paper version of the questionnaire on board during their flight to Russia.

Russia to soon begin e-visas for indians, mulls visa-free regime.

Between 2016 and 2019, tourist traffic from India to Moscow had grown from 61,000 annual visitors to over a lakh. In 2021, traffic recovered to 40% of the pre-pandemic level. Interestingly, they observed that of the Indian travellers who visited Moscow in 2021, 48% went there twice that year.

Russia launches e-visa facility for Indians; here’s how to apply, and other key details

Russia e-visa: the e-visa is valid for 60 days from the date of issue, and allows tourists to stay on the territory of russia for 16 days..

Russia has launched an e-visa facility for Indians from August 1, allowing travellers to the country to surpass the hassles of obtaining a regular visa.

The e-visa facility, also available for travellers from 54 other countries, does not require a visit to consulates or embassies.

Here are some key points to note while applying for e-visa:

🔴 To get an e-visa it is necessary to fill in an application on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia not earlier than 40 days and later than four days before the planned trip.

🔴 The e-visa furnished is valid for 60 days from the date of issue and allows tourists to stay on the territory of Russia for 16 days.

🔴 A digital photo and a scan of the information page of the passport are needed to apply for an e-visa.

🔴 It will allow travel on a guest, business, or tourist visit as well as to participate in scientific, cultural, socio-political, economic, and sports events.

🔴 Extension of the e-visa will be carried out by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation or its territorial bodies at the place of migration registration of a foreign citizen at the place of stay, and if there is no migration registration at the place of stay – at the place of actual stay by way of issuing an ordinary (not electronic) visa.

🔴 The status of your application may be as follows: “Draft” (means that the application has been partially completed or has not yet been sent for processing); “Awaiting payment” (means that the payment of the consular fee has not been made or has not yet gone through); “Accepted for processing” (means that the application is being processed); “Returned for editing” (means that incorrect information was found during the processing of the application. You need to make corrections and then resubmit the application for processing); “Processing completed” (decision on the application has been made).

“Launch of e-visa will increase tourist flow. To make the stay of guests from India as comfortable as possible, Moscow is actively working on the improvement of infrastructure for international travelers. We also have close cooperation with Indian companies in the field of tourism, which allows us to expand our tourist offer and tailor it to the needs of our guests,” said Evgeny Kozlov, Chairman of the Moscow City Tourism Committee.

Currently, more than 10 weekly flights connect India and Moscow.

You can now visit parts of Russia without a visa

You can pull your Siberia travel plans out of the freezer. Russia has announced that citizens of 18 countries, including India, no longer need a visa to travel to its far-eastern cities.

Visa requirements for both tourists and business travellers have been dropped to encourage travel to these parts. Travellers will have to apply for a permit through the website of Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Applications will be approved within four days, officials have said. Electronic single entry visas will be issued directly at the Russian border and will be valid for 30 days. The catch? Visitors are required to enter and exit through Vladivostok.

While it isn't immediately clear what cities one can access through this scheme, Far East Russia includes the cities of Khabarovsk (the administrative centre), Yakutsk (the coldest city on Earth) and the remote Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, accessible only by air and sea, and the site of some stunning natural scenery.

• Upload copies of your travel document and your photo
• Pay the application fee with a credit or debit card

Most Indian applicants finish completing the e-visa form in a few minutes. You have the chance to revise your details before you submit your Russian electronic visa application .

How Long Does it Take to Get a Visa for Russia from India?

The e-visa is valid for a range of travel purposes. You must be visiting for tourism, business, or humanitarian reasons such as taking part in scientific, cultural, socio-political, or sporting events .

Fly from India to Russia with an electronic visa

Indian passport holders with a Russian e-visa can fly into major international airports. The Russian e-visa is valid at:

• Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow (SVO)
• Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg (LED)
• Vnukovo International Airport in Moscow (VKO)

Indians can also use the approved Russian e-visa at several seaports and some land borders. Check the full list of approved entry ports when planning your journey.

Other Russian Visas for Indians

As explained above, the Russian e-visa is for short stays in Russia for specified travel purposes.

If you hold an Indian passport and wish to visit Russia for more than 16 days, or non tourism or business activities, you need a different visa type.

Other types of Russian visas for Indians include:

• Private visa — to stay with friends or family
• Work visa — to be employed in Russia
• Student visa — to attend an academic institution
• Business visa — for longer business trips

The application process for these visa types is more complex. You need to make the visa application in person and several supporting documents are required .

• Bosnia and Herzegovina (up to 30 days for tourists and up to 90 days for other visitors). Tourist documents or the original invitation, as appropriate, must be presented to the Russian Immigration authorities
• Botswana (up to 30 days in single trip, not more than 90 days in 180-day period).
• Brazil (for visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period) – for tourists, private visits or transit purposes only. In all other cases, a visa is required
• Brunei (for visits of up to 14 days)
• Cabo-Verde (up to 60 days)
• Chile (for visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period) – the visa-free regime does not apply to work- and business-related visits and Diplomatic and Service passport holders
• Colombia (for visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period)

Your recommended passport validity is 6 months from the date of your allowed stay in Russia after entry (example: If you enter Russia on the 1st of January and you are allowed to stay up to 90 days, that mean that your passport should be valid at least until 1st of October).

Iranians can travel to Russia without a visa for up to six months

Relations between the two countries are deepening.

Iranians can now travel to Russia for up to six months without a visa, a sign of deepening ties between Moscow and Tehran.

The countries had strong bilateral trade before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24 last year. This encompassed the energy sector, agriculture, defence ties and space technology, as Russia assisted Iran with satellite equipment in June 2021. The satellite went into orbit in August.

Iran is expected to reciprocate on the visa-free travel offer in the next few months, according to the country's ambassador.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed a decree approving a "facilitated" visa system for citizens of 19 countries at the end of last month.

Last month, Moscow's Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, said his country was planning to introduce visa-free travel for citizens of up to 11 "friendly" countries and ease entry requirements for citizens of six others.

Iran is included on the list as well as India, Bahrain, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, North Korea, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, Myanmar, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Turkey and the Philippines.

Iran's ambassador to Moscow, Kazem Jalali, said political relations between Moscow and Tehran were getting stronger.

"Our political relations are gradually developing and strengthening every day on the basis of us being neighbours as well as on our sharing similar approaches on the international arena," Mr Jalali said.

Russia and Iran "are enjoying a golden age in the development of bilateral ties," he added.

The co-operation had been held back by US sanctions against Iran, which delayed Russian energy giant Lukoil's plans to invest in two major Iranian oil fields in 2021. They included the Mansouri oil field in western Iran, which is thought to hold more than 15 billion barrels.

But following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, ties between both countries grew dramatically, with Russia saying it would invest in Iran’s energy sector to the tune of $40 billion over the summer.

Defence ties have also grown significantly.

Last month, US defence officials sought to dispel any doubt that Iran is supplying drones for Russia’s war in Ukraine. They released photos and analysis of Iran-made unmanned aircraft being used in the conflict to demonstrate Tehran’s involvement.

It was revealed that Russia had been using Iran-supplied kamikaze drones in its war against Ukraine.

Iran has said it supplied a “small number” of drones to Russia before the invasion but has denied providing any more since troops crossed the border last February.

5 visa updates for 2024 that Indian travellers will benefit from

With the summer holiday season fast approaching, it's time to start mapping out your travel plans. And as you do, it's also essential to stay updated on the latest visa regulations to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey. Also, staying updated will help you choose your options more wisely, and make the most out of it. In short, knowing the visa requirements and updates can make all the difference.

Here are some noteworthy visa updates for 2024 that every Indian traveller should be aware of.

Japan's introduction of eVisas for Indian travellers

Japan has launched eVisa applications for Indian travellers. Administered by Japan Visa Application Centers operated by VFS Global, this streamlined process retains the familiar steps of submitting documents and applications to VFS. Designed for short-term tourism, the eVisa will be offering a single-entry option allowing stays of up to 90 days. Both Indian nationals and foreigners residing in India are eligible to submit their applications.

Notably, visas will now be issued electronically rather than as physical stickers in passports. Upon approval, travellers must present a visa issuance notice on their mobile device at the airport, necessitating internet access. Do note that alternative formats such as PDFs or printed copies of the eVisa will not be accepted.

Dubai's introduces five-year, multiple-entry tourist visa

Dubai has recently introduced a new visa program tailored for Indian tourists in response to a significant increase in the number of Indian visitors. This visa program offers a five-year, multiple-entry permit, enabling travelers to spend up to 90 days per visit, with the option to extend once, and a yearly cap of 180 days.

This visa will cater to both business and leisure trips, and will allow unlimited entries and exits within the five-year period. Requirements will include a passport photo, six months' worth of bank statements showing a balance of at least $4,000 (INR 3,33,447), a valid passport with a minimum validity of six months, health insurance, and round-trip flight tickets. The application process will typically take 2-5 days, with submissions accepted through the GDRFA website or app, or the official ICP website.

Thailand's visa-free option for Indian travellers

The Thai Government recently announced a temporary visa exemption for Indian passport holders from November 10, 2023, to May 10, 2024. During this period, Indian travellers can enter Thailand for tourism purposes without requiring a tourist visa, enjoying a 30-day stay.

Kenya's eliminates visa requirements

Effective January 1, Kenya eliminated visa requirements for not only Indian citizens, but also for all global visitors, in a move aimed at bolstering the nation's vital tourism sector. This visa-free initiative will facilitate seamless travel experiences for visitors keen on wildlife safaris and beach vacations.

Romania and Bulgaria's access to Schengen Visas

Romania and Bulgaria have partially joined the Schengen Area, expanding the scope of the Schengen visa to include 29 countries across continental Europe. This means Indian travellers can now obtain Schengen visas from Romania and Bulgaria, permitting stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. However, do note that visas issued before April 1 by these two countries won't grant access to the entire Schengen area. Travellers from non-Schengen countries may still undergo passport checks when travelling between different Schengen destinations. Visa issuance for Bulgaria and Romania can be processed on their respective official websites.

W hen you are planning your next vacation, make sure to research to see if the country you plan to visit requires a visa of any sort and which visa services are quickest and cheapest.

U.S. passport owners have the privilege of being able to visit various countries—among them Canada, Mexico, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Belize, Iceland, and more—without needing a visa. However, a number of international destinations do require that travelers with U.S. passports purchase tourist visas before entering the country. Here’s what you need to know about a few of the more frequently visited countries that require visas from U.S. citizens upon arrival.

Visa Requirements

Knowing which countries require a travel visa for U.S. citizens and understanding specific travel visa requirements for the country you plan to visit is of utmost importance. Unfortunately, there is not a set of travel visa rules that apply across the board. Each country that requires a travel visa will have its own requirements, so make sure to do your research and acquire all the documents needed prior to your visit. 

While there are many countries that don’t require a visa for a short stay (usually between 30-90 days), they may require a visa for a longer visit.  

How to Apply for a Travel Visa

For short-term travel, there are a couple of ways to secure a visa. For some countries, you can obtain a visa upon arrival by paying a fee at the airport, which is called “visa on arrival.” Some nations, however, require a visa application and approval before travel. For either scenario, the safest and smartest decision is to secure your visa in advance! There are many services that offer help with securing a travel visa and knowing how to get a visa for any country   can be a long process, so my suggestion is to start early! 

Visa Application Form

Each country has different requirements and their own visa application form. Some visas can be obtained on arrival at the airport, while some visas must be applied for in advance. 

Some visas take just a few days to receive after submission, while others can take several weeks. Again, begin your visa process as early as possible to assure you have no hiccups in your vacation plans.

Indian Visa

You need a Visa to travel to India from the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia (as well as many other countries). Check the rules for your country, but U.S. citizens who want to travel to India for tourist purposes, and who plan to stay no longer than 60 days, may apply for a visa electronically. When I applied for my visa, the system was fairly clunky and I needed to upload a photo and a copy of my passport. I received my Indian visa within two days of applying.

Note, that India’s visa application process changes frequently, so the Indian embassy in Washington, D.C. suggests travelers to their website for updates before planning a trip. As things can change, do up to date research, but as of the writing of this article; a U.S. citizen can apply online for an electronic travel authorization referred to as an “e-Visa” up to four days before arrival in India, but no more than 30 days before travel. The e-Visa costs $100 and is valid for 60 days upon entry to India. (Be prepared to present a printed copy at customs in the international airport.)

Australian Visa

To apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) you must have a valid passport and apply for your ETA with the passport and passport number you will be traveling to Australia with. You can purchase an Australian ETA no later than 24 hours in advance of your departure. Electronic tourist visas are valid for one year and permit multiple stays of up to 90 days in Australia. They currently cost $20 per person.

Russian Visa

To enter Russia, residents of most countries, including the US are required to obtain a visa in advance. In order to get a Russian visa , the first thing you need is an invitation (also known as visa support letter). After that, you can apply for the visa at a Russian consulate, a travel agent or with a visa service company. U.S. citizens can apply for as long as 36 months with a tourist visa.  

Additional Required Paperwork

If you’re planning an international trip with a U.S. passport, be prepared with all of your paperwork. Although each country has different requirements, there are some general rules to observe when planning an international trip:

• Your Passport must be valid for at least 6 months to travel to most international locations and must have at least two blank pages available in your passport.
• You may be asked for  proof of onward travel , which is not a problem if you have a return ticket. If you plan on country-hopping, you’ll need to have proof of your travel plans. You may be refused to board on a flight if you cannot satisfy immigration that you plan on leaving their country. If you’re not sure when you plan on leaving, you can buy an onward flight that is refundable and re-book later.
• Some countries require that you have  adequate medical insurance to cover your stay. Regardless of whether it is mandatory, we highly recommend that you purchase travel insurance .  
• It is rare, but you may be asked for  proof of funds and will need to satisfy immigration that you can support your travels. This can catch you off guard, and trying to log in to your internet bank on airport Wi-Fi can be a bit frantic. To be prepared, make sure you have a copy of a bank statement or a screenshot on your phone.
• Regardless of whether a country has visa-free access, there are still requirements that need to be met if you’re going to travel abroad. We recommend that you confirm with the relevant embassy before making any travel plans.

Tensions in the Middle East are continuing to increase this evening, as the US moves assets in the region to better protect its forces and bolster regional deterrence. 

It comes amid the threat of an Iranian attack on Israel in retaliation to a deadly strike on its embassy in Syria.

More details now on the news we brought you earlier about that US military moving assets in the Middle East. 

An American defence official told Sky News the move was being made to bolster regional deterrence efforts and increase protection of US forces in the region. 

Now, our US partner NBC News has reported most of the assets involved are already deployed in the area and just moving around. 

Officials said moves were being made to be better positioned for defence of Israel and US assets and in case the US needs to respond to whatever Iran does. 

The specific assets being moved in the region have not been identified. 

Germany has advised it citizens to leave Iran amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. 

The German foreign offices warned there was a risk of sudden escalation in Tehran's situation with Israel and also of arbitrary arrest in the country. 

"In the current tensions, especially between Israel and Iran, there is a risk of a sudden escalation," it wrote in a travel warning. 

"It cannot be excluded that air, land and sea transport routes could be affected." 

It said Germans were at "concrete risk" of being arrested, interrogated and being given long prison sentences. 

"Dual citizens with Iranian and German nationality are especially at risk," it added. 

Three Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank today in military raids and settler rampage. 

Israeli forces shot dead two Palestinians, including a member of the armed wing of Hamas, in raids. 

While, the Palestinian Health Ministry has reported at least one person was killed in an Israeli settler rampage near Ramallah.

The Israeli military said Mohammad Omar Daraghmeh, who has been described as the head of Hamas infrastructure in the Tubas area, was killed during an exchange of fire with security forces.

It said a number of weapons and military-style equipment, including automatic rifles were found in his vehicle.

Hamas confirmed Daraghmeh's death and his membership of its armed Al Qassam Brigades.

The official Palestinian news agency WAFA said another man was killed by Israeli forces conducting a raid in the al Far'a refugee camp in Tubas.

Hamas mourned the man's death but did not claim him as a member. 

The military said forces carrying out the operation opened fire on Palestinians who threw explosive devices and killed one man it said was attempting to attack them.

Israel has stepped up military raids in the West Bank since launching its operation in Gaza. 

Joe Biden has reiterated US support for Israel, saying his administration is "devoted" to its defence. 

The US president said his message to Iran, which has threatened to take military action against Israel, was simply "don't". 

"We will support Israel. We will help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed," he said. 

His comments come after a US defence official confirmed to Sky News that "additional assets" were being moved to the Middle East to "bolster regional deterrence efforts". 

Iran has threatened to attack Israel in retaliation to a deadly strike on its embassy in Syria last week.

Israel has been widely blamed for the attack, but has not commented on it publicly. 

Around 40 rocket launches have been identified crossing from Lebanon, the Israeli military has said. 

In a Telegram post, the Israel Defence Forces said some rockets were intercepted, and the rest fell in open areas. 

It also confirmed two Hezbollah explosive drones that had entered Israeli territory from Lebanon had been intercepted. 

"Over the last few hours, the IDF struck in a number of locations in southern Lebanon in order to remove a threat," it added. 

Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah have regularly exchanged fire across the border since the war in Gaza erupted last year. 

Throughout the day, we have been reporting on the threat of an Iranian attack on Israel. 

The US has warned the threat is "real" and "viable" and, in the last few moments, an American defence official has confirmed "additional assets" are being moved to the Middle East as a result. 

Our security and defence analyst Michael Clarke has said it is "quite likely" Iran will attack, and the US has been given signals all day that it could be "imminent". 

He added he is "fairly sure" Iran will not let go of the deadly strike on its embassy in Syria - which is what sparked the threat of an attack in the first place. 

"The United States is pretty clear now that something is about to happen, maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow, but it won't be much further than that, and it might be quite big," Prof Clarke said.

He explained that the US has said it is more likely Iran will launch a direct attack on Israel, and the Iranians do have missiles with the capability to do so.

Israel has made it very clear it will hit back if Iran decides to attack, and Prof Clarke said some Israelis would "almost like that to happen" so they could attack some of Iran's nuclear facilities.

The US is "moving additional assets" to the Middle East, a defence official has told Sky News. 

The move will "bolster regional deterrence efforts and increase force protection for US forces", the official said. 

Our US correspondent Mark Stone said no further details have been provided. 

"That means more military hardware is being moved or will be moved to the region to do two things - try to deter Iran from taking any massive action and also to protect existing American forces that are in the region," he said. 

"I think the consensus among experts is that the Iranian will respond, but they will almost certainly respond against Israel directly rather than any American military in the region. 

"Nevertheless, what that response will look like and what it will mean in terms of an Israeli response, we don't know yet." 

The announcement comes after the White House said it changed its force posture in the region amid threats of an Iranian attack on Israel. 

Fears of an escalating situation in the Middle East have grown in recent days after Iran threatened to attack Israel. 

But how is Iran involved in the conflict - and why is it threatening to attack Israel? 

Firstly, Iran is the biggest backer of Hamas, having provided weapons and training to the militant group in previous years. 

It also backs Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen - both of which have been involved in attacks on Israel since the war in Gaza erupted last year. 

Historically, Israel and Iran have been arch enemies, with both countries allegedly behind a long series of attacks on each other's interests. 

Tensions between the two nations have been increasingly stretched since Israel entered Gaza following the 7 October Hamas attacks. 

But, they became incredibly high last week after an attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria. 

That's why Iran is threatening to attack Israel. 

Two generals and seven members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard were killed in the strike in Damascus, which Tehran has blamed on Israel. 

The US military has said it also believes Israel was behind the attack. 

However, Israel has not publicly commented on the airstrike. 

Iran has been warned by the US not to use the embassy attack as a pretext to escalate the situation in the region.
