cozumel carnival

It is important to note that there is a Pre-Carnival and a Carnival , and most likely what is of greater interest is the Carnival , which is when the biggest parties and parades take place.

The Carnival of Cozumel takes place from Wednesday the 7th till Tuesday the 13th of February, 2024.

Where is Cozumel?

cozumel carnival

Cozumel is an island , and it is one of the largest and most populous islands in Mexico with an area of 500 km 2  located in the heavenly Mexican Caribbean. Given its geographic location, many cruise ships stop at its port.

At more than 30 kms long, it’s reef is one of the most famous and largest in the world. With few mountains its highways area pleasant to drive on, and you can stop nearly anywhere and have a swim and enjoy the beautiful natural sights of the island.

What is the Carnival of Cozumel?

The Carnival of Cozumel is a family-oriented Carnival basically because entire families prepare for months for this spectacular event .

This incredible Carnival has floats , contests, and, obviously, loads of costumes and entertainment for everyone, including pets.

The Carnival of Cozumel is divided into Pre-Carnival and Carnival ; Carnival lasts for seven days of intense partying where you’ll need to pace yourself for what’s to come.

How is Carnival celebrated in Cozumel?

cozumel carnival

Although the Carnival of Cozumel boasts several events and lasts for many days, the most important days for the celebration are Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Mardi Gras . The city completely shuts down from the early morning hours all through the night due to the parades and parties .

If you can make it to the Guaranducha Cozumeña, don’t pass on the opportunity, together with the live parodies and the troupes of poets.

The fantasy troupes , mainly composed of young people, transmit that joie de vivre that only the youngest among us feel, although more mature audiences also get caught up in the fun. These troupes perform up to 10 times a day, hence the need for some youth and endurance if you want to take part.

Another attraction to consider are the decorations in the city, which help it take on a unique appearance. In fact, it is a tradition to decorate the promenade in addition to the two stages located in the main parks of the city where the best performances take place with allegories that reference the theme of Carnival for that year.

Without question, Cozumel lives for Carnival .

Pre-Carnival in Cozumel

cozumel carnival

The main objective of Pre-Carnival in Cozumel is to crown the king and queen of Carnival . It is a beauty pageant that lasts for weeks and features three male and three female contestants.

From these contestants the King and Queen of Carnival, the King and Queen of Happiness, and the King and Queen of Fantasy will be chosen. For three weeks they do their best to earn these awards of the Carnival of Cozumel .

In addition to these awards, there are also categories for Child King and Queen, Youth King and Queen, and Nominees for Diversity.

Something to keep in mind is that this contest involves the whole town as the residents are the ones responsible for voting for the Kings and Queens of Carnival of Cozumel , something that rarely happens at other Carnivals in Mexico .

For four weekends, the contestants face different tests, explained below:

  • 1st Weekend: Introduction of all the contestants to the rulers.
  • 2nd Weekend: Unveiling of all candidates for the King and Queen of Carnival in individual costumes.
  • 3rd Weekend: Presentation and election of the King and Queen of Carnival together with their troupes.
  • 4th Weekend:  Presentation and election of the Youth King and Queen, the Child King and Queen, and the King and Queen for Diversity.

The night the King and Queen of Carnival are chosen is a special occasion where excitement and tension fill the air, making for an unforgettable experience. The contestants are introduced and must put their best foot forward in a dance competition to prove they are worthy of the crown.

At 4:00 a.m. after the dance competition, the votes are tallied and the king and queen of Carnival are announced.

This is how Pre-Carnival in Cozumel works every year and is definitely worth the experience if you have the opportunity.

Once all the kings and queens have been crowned and the Momo King has given his speech, the biggest party in the Mexican Caribbean begins: the much anticipated Carnival of Cozumel .

Seven intense days of Carnival will be sure to provide you with nonstop entertainment.

  • First day of Carnival:   Children’s Thursday is when the children of the city play the leading role in a splendid parade full of children, which plants the seed for their future love and pride of the Carnival of Cozumel .
  • Second night of Carnival:  On the so-called ‘Troupe Friday’ , schools, workplaces or groups of friends form troupes and come out in costumes and perform choreographed dances. There are two categories for this event: Youth and Open.
  • Third night of Carnival: This is known as Fantasy and mask Saturday. On this third day the whole city grinds to a halt to enjoy the music, atmosphere, and colors. Troupes can be seen everywhere, and this is the first of four days, we could say its the first big day, where the city truly stops.

The float parade is held in the afternoon on the main street, and all the troupes are involved making for a very crowded event. For the most spirited, there are events and musical performances into the early hours.

  • Fourth night of Carnival: The second float parade known as Sunday of Tradition and the second Carnival dance.
  • Fifth night of Carnival:  Third Carnival dance, however on Regional Tropical Monday there is no float parade.
  • Sixth night of Carnival:  The third and final float parade is known as Tuesday of Apotheosis, and on this night the festivities come to a close with a free, open-air concert.
  • Ash Wednesday:  The Burning of ‘Juan Carnival’, a reading from the testament, and awards ceremony. After a reading of the testament by the Momo King, a doll representing the same is burned.

How to get to cozumel.

Cozumel has an  International Airport  and direct flights that arrive from Canada and the United States. You can also land at the  International Airport of Cancun , an hour away from  Playa del Carmen .

From  Playa del Carmen  there are several ferry lines that will transfer you to Cozumel in approximately 30 or 45 minutes that land at  San Miguel de Cozumel .

What to see and do in Cozumel?

cozumel carnival

San Miguel is the largest area of the island where the majority of the shops, accommodations, nightlife, and restaurants are located.

On the western part of Cozumel you will find the San Francisco and Playa del Sol beaches, incredible white sand beaches with calm, crystal-blue waters. This is where the majority of the aquatic activities are located, such as scuba diving and snorkeling to observe the incredible marine life nearby.

The eastern side of the island completely contrasts with this, boasting rough, open sea and extreme caution is recommended when swimming on this side of the island.

There are other beaches and some isolated but charming bars and restaurants on the San Miguel highway heading south, as well as some areas to scuba dive, as well as the Chankanaab Park, which is a restored Mayan archeological site.

At the southernmost tip of the island is the  Punta Sur Eco-Beach Natural Park where the El Caracol Mayan remains can be found as well as the  Faro Celarain lighthouse . The park safeguards a habitat for birds including watchtowers, crocodiles, turtle nesting areas, and the Navigation Museum.

On the extreme north end of Cozumel is a small plot of paradise only 1 km long known as  Passion Island  or Mukyaj Peten, in Mayan. The Mayans considered this a sacred place, and here they paid homage to Ixchel, the goddess of love and fertility.

The island has plenty to offer, both for submarining enthusiasts as well as lovers of catamarans looking to scuba dive around Cozumel; here is a selection of activities available at Viator.com .

BREVARD COUNTY • PORT CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – Carnival Cruise Line’s Glory returned to service today in Barcelona following a 21-day dry dock.

The ship is setting sail on a 14-day Carnival Journeys transatlantic cruise to the ship’s new homeport of Port Canaveral. On May 2, Carnival Glory will join Carnival Freedom, Carnival Vista and Mardi Gras, in Port Canaveral, where she will offer three- and four-day itineraries visiting The Bahamas, including Nassau, Freeport, Princess Cays and Bimini.

Over the last three weeks, the ship received several enhancements, including a casino updated layout, refreshed décor and furnishings across all public areas and a newly added Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge, a popular venue that is expanding across the Carnival fleet and honors military veterans and active-duty service members.

A Dreams Photography Studio was also added and upgrades were made to the ship’s spa.

For younger cruisers, the dedicated onboard youth space, Camp Ocean, was redesigned and a large video wall was added to enhance the Space Cruisers program, which includes curriculum developed in partnership with Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.

The ship’s Warehouse video arcade was refreshed as well. Guests will also notice updates to public areas across the ship.

The 110,000-ton Glory is 952 feet long with 13 decks and can accomodate 2,980 passengers and a crew of 1,150. She was floated out on July 19, 2003, and christened by NASA astronaut Dr Sally Ride.

Lightning Fire on Carnival Cruise Ship Cancels Trip Through Bahamas; 2nd Major Fire on Same Ship in 2 Years

A fire potentially caused by a lightning strike erupted on a cruise ship en route to the Bahamas over the weekend, interrupting travel plans for thousands of passengers.

The Carnival Freedom has now caught fire twice in less than two years, Knewz.com has learned.

An exhaust funnel on the cruise ship's port side burst into flames on Saturday, March 23, prompting the company to cancel its next two voyages.

"The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames," Carnival wrote in a post on X . The company also noted it was investigating "the possibility of a lightning strike" based on reports from eyewitnesses.

A passenger from Maryland , Heath Barnes, shared videos on social media showing flames shooting out of the pipe amid gray, rainy conditions . He took the videos from his room's private balcony after he said he heard thunder and his family members notified him about the fire.

"I thought they were giving me a hard time but I got up and went out on the balcony and sure enough the flames and smoke was pouring out of the tail," Barnes told TMX.

https://twitter.com/CarnivalCruise/status/1771646928377254314

The cruise was set to dock at Princess Cay at 9 a.m., but around 8 a.m., crew members announced over the loudspeakers that strong winds would prevent the ship from making the scheduled stop. Instead, guests would "have a sea day and be in Freeport tomorrow," Barnes said.

"It was storming pretty hard until about 1 [p.m.] with all the upper decks closed," he said. A couple hours later, "the loudest thunder and lightning I have ever heard happened," he added.

According to Barnes, the crew instructed all guests to stay inside until around 5:40 p.m. due to the fire.

"Definitely an exciting day," Barnes said.

During the Carnival Freedom's visit to Freeport the following day, a technical team "completed a thorough assessment," John Heald, Carnival's brand ambassador, wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday, March 24.

"Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought, and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," Heald said. "The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs."

No injuries have been reported, and guests were refunded for the cancelled cruises.

"We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests , as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation," Heald said.

In May of 2022, a fire broke out in a funnel of the Carnival Freedom while it was in Grand Turk, as People reported at the time.

Photos and videos on social media showed a massive plume of black smoke billowing from the burning pipe as crews worked to extinguish the flames.

The 948-foot cruise ship was built in 2007 and can carry up to 3,500 passengers, according to Cruise Mapper .

Two crew members have also died on the Holland America Line’s New Amsterdam ship, as Knewz.com reported , while the ship was at the island resort of Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas.

The incident occurred around 9:20 a.m. on Friday, March 22, following “an accidental steam release in an engineering space in the Bahamas,” a spokesperson for the cruise line said.

6 Best Cruises Out Of Port Canaveral

By Zachary Laks | Published on April 9, 2024

It's time to start planning your next big vacation. Whether you're looking for a weekend getaway, a family-friendly vacation or an extended voyage, you'll find cruises out of Port Canaveral, Florida that tick all your boxes.

When considering one of the cruises out of Port Canaveral, plan extra time before and after your sailing to soak up all the fun that the area has to offer. There's so much to do in Orlando that you could stay for several days and never get bored — music to your ears if you're traveling with children. One of the best things about Orlando cruises is that you have your choice of theme parks to round out your vacation. They're expansive and immersive escapes into playful worlds, not unlike a great cruise. I love tacking on an extra day or two at an Orlando theme park, usually before my cruise departs. I always appreciate the days of racking up thousands of steps traversing a theme park before boarding a cruise, where I know I'll be able to lounge on a deck or relax in a hot tub.

Not far from Port Canaveral, the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is a great place to spend a day admiring the vast scope of NASA. The center offers one-of-a-kind immersion into space exploration, including the chance to strap into a rocket launch simulator for an adrenaline-pumping thrill.

For those seeking a more peaceful retreat before boarding their cruises out of Orlando, Port Canaveral is near the white sands of Cocoa Beach. Spend the day enjoying calm, low waves — great for year-round swimming, learning to surf and kayaking alongside manatees and dolphins. Or take a seat on an airboat ride through the wetlands for encounters with alligators and, depending on the season, bald eagles, herons and osprey.

Ready to book a cruise to Port Canaveral? Here are the six best cruises from Port Canaveral.

Serene Clear Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral, Florida

1. Best For A Long Weekend

Coco Beach Club Beach Cabanas Mom and Daughter Tanning, Perfect Day at Coco Cay

Set to launch in the summer of 2024, Utopia of the Seas ℠ will be the sixth Oasis Class ship, Royal Caribbean's class of ships packed with adventure and entertainment. The new ship will focus on three- and four-night cruises from its year-round home port in Port Canaveral, with onboard upgrades that include reimagined pool decks, a Giovanni's℠ Italian Kitchen that spans two decks (try the osso buco!) and the new Pesky Parrot tiki bar, serving fruity cocktails on the Royal Promenade. This itinerary  to the Bahamas on Utopia of the Seas ℠ is the best for a long weekend exploring the highlights of The Bahamas, with a day in Nassau followed by a day at Perfect Day at CocoCay , Royal Caribbean's private island destination.

2. Best For Beach Lovers

Colorful buildings along the coast, Willemstad, Curacao

This exquisite itinerary to the Southern Caribbean on Adventure of the Seas ® routes you to the farthest corner of the Caribbean for some of its best beaches. Sailing on the Adventure of the Seas ® for eight nights from Port Canaveral, you'll stop in ports such as Oranjestad, Aruba; Willemstad, Curaçao; and Kralendijk, Bonaire. Each port will welcome you with easily accessible, powdery sand beaches primed for world-class swimming, snorkeling and diving. You'll have your pick of 86 dive sites at Bonaire National Marine Park with more than 350 recorded fish species known to frequent the waters.

3. Best For A European Adventure

Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Boats Docked

Transatlantic sailings make for such a special vacation, and this 13-night Transatlantic Azores itinerary on Adventure of the Seas ® packs four remarkable ports into the crossing. You'll cruise the Atlantic for the first nine days, living it up on a ship that is packed with ways to play and relax. You'll arrive in idyllic Tenerife in the Canary Islands on the tenth day. Immerse yourself in the local Spanish culture by spending part of your day exploring the Museum of Nature and Archaeology or the Basilica de Candelaria shrine. The cruise continues to Lanzarote, Canary Islands, where picture-perfect colonial mansions line cobblestone streets, then on to the adventurous mountain island of Madeira, Portugal before completing your journey in the charming streets of Lisbon, Portugal.

4. Best For Private Island Getaways

Hamilton, Bermuda Horseshoe Bay

This unique Port Canaveral cruise itinerary  to Bermuda and Perfect Day at CocoCay on Adventure of the Seas ® visits both of Royal Caribbean's private destinations, where paradise is just steps away from the ship. On an eight-night journey, this ship will first cruise to Labadee, the cruise line's private peninsula adventure park and beach. Soak up this private spot by relaxing on the beach, enjoy the destination's signature cocktail specialty, the Labadoozie (a fruity rum cocktail) or opt for a zip line ride that will send you soaring over the ocean. The next private island destination is Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's oasis in The Bahamas. Here you'll port within short distance of pristine beaches, a thrilling water park and countless ways to unwind beneath the palm trees. There's also a stop in Bermuda, home to pink-sand beaches and rum swizzles.

5. Best For Foodies

Authentic Cozumel Shrimp Tacos

Foodies will delight in fresh, authentic Caribbean dishes on this itinerary to the Western Caribbean and Perfect Day at CocoCay on Wonder of the Seas ® . In Cozumel, Mexico you'll find lunch specialties featuring locally caught seafood, often grouper and red snapper fried on a plate with rice and a vibrant salad. In Roatán, Honduras, ceviche is the local favorite, along with fried plantains and baleadas — tacos made with soft flour tortillas. The ship's final port is Puerto Costa Maya, Mexico, a charming fishing village where the salbutes  (fried corn tortillas topped with shredded chicken) make a great appetizer to the catch of the day, served hot off the grill.

6. Best For Variety

Aruba ATV Off Road Track, Oranjestad, Aruba

This seven-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary  on Wonder of the Seas ® is a top choice if you want to change things up and go on a unique adventure in each port. Your first destination is Philipsburg, St. Maarten, where you can tour the island on an ATV, sample rum from a local distillery or end the day with a sunset horseback ride on the beach. When the ship arrives in the U.S. Virgin Islands at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, head straight to Magens Bay, often short-listed as one of the world's most beautiful beaches. Or dive into a snorkeling tour to get face time with some sea turtles and coral reefs. On your final stop, Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay, everyone in your group can enjoy a seemingly endless array of activities. If the beach is calling, grab a spot on one of the many cushy beach loungers close to a bar serving up island cocktails that go great with the ocean view. For the adventurous ones, Daredevil's Peak® waterslide is North America's tallest and promises an adrenaline rush.

Encompassing ports of paradise and incredible culture, Orlando cruises are the ideal vacation getaway. Start planning your island escape from Port Canaveral now .
