WATCH: Cruise Passengers Share Terrifying Videos from 'Nightmare' Storm at Sea

The Carnival Sunshine cruise ship made it back to port safely on Saturday after being stuck in a storm between the Bahamas and Charleston, S.C. for 15 hours

brad morrell/storyful

The Carnival Sunshine cruise ship made it back to port nine hours later than planned after sailing through a terrifying storm on Friday night.

The ship was on its way to Charleston, S.C. from the Bahamas when it got caught in severe weather, including nearly 80 mph winds. Passengers on board shared details and footage of the chaos and destruction caused by the storm on social media. Thankfully, Carnival told PEOPLE in a statement provided below that "no one was seriously injured."

Crew Center, a cruise ship information site, posted a video on Twitter showing a flooded hallway, torn-off doors and other debris and destruction on board.

"The aftermath aboard Carnival Sunshine after a severe storm," the post read. "The crew from Deck 0-4 evacuated to the theater, and anywhere they could rest… the crew bar destroyed."

Passenger Daniel Taylor told Newsweek that the captain made an announcement around 4:45 p.m. saying that they would be experiencing a delay due to "adverse weather conditions," expressing that they "would do everything they could to minimize discomfort.

By dinner time, public decks had been closed off, and plates and cups were flying off the buffet areas, he recalled.

By the early hours of Saturday morning, he said, "We were no longer able to see where we were going, how fast we were going, what the wind speed was, or anything. We were blind to what was going on." Swells were hitting the ship "over and over," said Taylor, who also recalled seeing crew members wearing life vests.

At that point, the internet was also out, so those on board couldn't get any additional information or reach loved ones.

Matthew Branham, who was also on board, told The Washington Post , that "waves were hitting the boat so hard that it was like an earthquake experience, jarring you like a really rough roller coaster — even in the middle floor."

TVs were falling off walls and glasses shattering. “You could not stand up in your room,” he said. “You could be thrown from the bed."

Another passenger, RJ Whited, wrote in a since-deleted Facebook post cited by Newsweek , "Our cruise ship last night was literally sideways and slung everything in our room breaking, people in the hallways throwing up and sleeping on the stairs."

Added Whited, "We also found out that they knew about the storm and instead of us staying back to ride it out a few hours they hit it head-on so we could make it back for the other cruise to be on time."

Finally, the ship made it back to Charleston around 7:30 a.m., though it couldn't immediately dock due to continuing rough weather.

At 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, the ship was able to dock.

Summing up the "nightmare" experience, passenger Christa Seifert-Alicea told NBC News 4 : "What we endured is indescribable, not only to feel it yourself but to hear and see it set in on every single person around you from adult, child and the elderly is something I will never forget."

In a statement to PEOPLE on Wednesday, Carnival said: "Carnival Sunshine's return to Charleston was impacted by the weather and rough seas on Saturday. The weather's prolonged impact on the Charleston area delayed the ship's arrival and as a result, the next voyage's embarkation was also delayed. We appreciate the patience and understanding of all our guests." The statement claims that "the ship's crew followed our protocols for rough weather" noting, "thankfully, no one was seriously injured."

"The weather was unexpectedly strong, causing conditions that were rougher than forecasted," the statement continues. "Given the circumstances as they were, the ship's officers and our Fleet Operations Center team using real time meteorology data coordinated to keep the ship in its safest location. Attempting to sail out of the large front could have been dangerous. The ship proceeded to the port as soon as the weather began to clear." The cruise line's statement also said that the captain "made several announcements about the weather and the delay" but noted "some of the worst weather occurred in the overnight hours when announcements are not typically made."

The Carnival Sunshine is already on its next voyage, the cruise line confirmed.

Violent storm scares passengers aboard Carnival cruise ship heading to port

by Rich Rodriguez

Horror stories from the high seas.

Passengers aboard a Carnival Cruise Line say they were tossed around by strong winds and huge waves that lasted for hours.

Here's what they experienced on the last day of their journey from the Bahamas to South Carolina.

"You can't just take 5,000 people and sail them into a storm and hopefully make it through it. That makes no sense at all."

Bill Hessler saw the storm approaching near the Bahamas and captured it on video. He can't believe what happened on the Carnival cruise ship sailing home to South Carolina.

There was one wave that crashed into the boat at about 2 a.m. that sounded like the whole boat snapped in half. That's when the boat really started filling with water," said Hessler.

Chris Legault says on the last day the water got choppy and uncomfortable.

"The deeper into the night we went the more dangerous and choppy it got. My wife, she was just out of her mind especially when stuff started to fall around us," Legault said."

The waves sent dishes flying and crashing to the floor. Liquor bottles took a dive off the shelves. Cartons of cigarettes were scattered in a shop. Hessler says there was water everywhere.

"When you see water coming out and flooding two full floors. Everybody on those decks had to evacuate those floors and come up and sit in the lounge because they were full of water," Hessler said.

Legault believes the captain made a big mistake. "I would have much rather see him stay in safer waters, not just for the comfort but for the safety of the guests on board," he said.

Hessler is just happy to be off the boat. "It's like pinch me. Am I still here? I thought we were done honestly."

Hessler believes Carnival was more concerned about returning to port than the safety of its passengers.

FOX26 News reached out to Carnival Cruise Line in Miami but so far no response.

’Really primitive stuff’: Safely ashore, cruise passengers tell of hoarding, filth and fright

Image: Carnival Triumph

Weary and miserable, sickened by the stench of sewage, the last of more than 3,000 passengers walked off a hobbled cruise ship Friday after tugboats lugged it to the Alabama shore and finally brought an end to a five-day floating nightmare.

As they filed off the Carnival Triumph, people kissed loved ones and the ground beneath them. They gobbled down fresh food, took hot showers and gave thanks for the simple pleasures of power and functional plumbing.

The last passenger disembarked just before 2 a.m.

Safely ashore, the passengers told horror stories of a ship with corridors reeking of sewage, long lines for meals and people sleeping on deck to get out of the sweltering interior of the vessel. One person said it smelled like a zoo. Clark Jones of Dallas recalled seeing people hoard food and protect their turf on the ship.

“It’s really primitive stuff,” he said.

It took only hours for the first lawsuit to be filed, by a Texas woman who claimed in federal court that she suffered physical and emotional harm because Carnival failed to provide a seaworthy vessel and sanitary conditions, Reuters reported. Other lawsuits were expected.

Julie Billings told NBC News that the experience “was like post-natural disaster, but stuck on a boat with 3,200 other people, and those poor workers trying to clean up after everyone and deal with everyone freaking out.”

The ship, three football fields long, lost power Sunday after a fire in the engine room and had to be towed to land. It was tugged first toward Mexico, then toward Mobile, Ala., after strong wind in the Gulf of Mexico carried it north.

'Tempers started flying' On the last day of the rescue, the agony was prolonged by a snapped cable connecting the Triumph to one of four tugboats, to say nothing of the logistical challenge of easing the 100,000-ton behemoth safely into port when it had no power to steer itself.

Carnival had workers in place to provide passengers with warm food, blankets, phones and refreshments. Adding yet another complication, a bus carrying passengers from the Triumph to New Orleans, where they were to board charter flights home, broke down on Friday , and passengers had to wait for another bus to pick them up.

Other buses from Mobile began arriving Friday morning in Galveston, Texas, the ship’s point of departure.

Passengers generally had praise for the crew. Janie Baker told MSNBC that they were “fantastic,” but that by the final night “people’s tempers started flying.” She described one incident in which a passenger tried to disrupt a movie and was taken away by the crew.

“Going to the bathroom in plastic bags and then handing it to another human being to throw it away — that is just the most embarrassing thing,” another passenger, Jayme Lamm, told MSNBC.

As they neared home, some people aboard chanted, “Let me off, let me off!” They used bedsheets to make giant signs, visible from news helicopters hovering around the boat, that said, “SOS!” or “Sweet Home Alabama!”

“The ship’s afloat, so is the sewage,” another said.

Slideshow: Passengers share photos of life on crippled Carnival Triumph

The government is investigating the engine-room fire. Carnival, which has suspended the Triumph through mid-April, will give $500 to each passenger from the Triumph, plus reimbursement for the cruise and a free future cruise. Carnival also said Friday that passengers will be reimbursed for what they bought on the ship, not counting artwork and purchases in the casino and gift shop.

It was not clear how many would take the company up on the free cruise.

“Not with Carnival,” Billings said, asked on TODAY whether she would take a cruise again. “Not yet.”

Carnival CEO: 'We failed'

As the ship docked, Carnival Cruise Lines CEO Gerry Cahill spoke to the media — with some passengers cheering in the background — and apologized for the ordeal.

“I appreciate the patience of our guests and their ability to cope with the situation,” he said. “And I’d like to reiterate the apology I made earlier. I know the conditions on board were very poor,” he said.

“We pride ourselves on providing our guests with a great vacation experience, and clearly we failed in this particular case,” he added.

As for the crew, Terry Thornton, the company’s senior vice president, said that they would have the option of staying on the ship or moving to a hotel.

After the power went out and toilets stopped working, cruise staff instructed people to urinate into the showers and put fecal matter into plastic bags, which were collected by stewards and put into giant trash bags, passenger Shannon Caceres told NBC News.

Caceres, who lives in Flower Mound, Texas, described reports of people looting rooms and taking laptops, phones and cameras.

Two nights into the cruise, Caceres said that the crew decided to serve alcohol, which led to “people screaming obscenities in the hallways, wasted.” The crew then stopped serving alcohol again.

Carnival had disputed passenger accounts before the ship reached land, but the photos, not to mention the relief on passengers’ faces, seemed to confirm their accounts. The company had confirmed that fewer than two dozen public toilets were working.

The Triumph had 3,143 passengers and 1,086 crew on board. With all the passengers off, the ship was being moved out of its dock Friday and to a nearby shipyard.

Five Cruise Ship Horror Stories

As thousands of Carnival passengers languish in the Gulf of Mexico, we revisit more tales of deprivation on the high seas, from an epic David Foster Wallace exposĂŠ to pirates and viruses.

The 3,143 passengers aboard the Carnival Triumph , which is currently drifting in the Gulf of Mexico after an engine fire left the ship without propulsion, are in a pretty miserable state. There have been reports of “sewage running down the walls and floors,” nonfunctioning toilets, water shortages, scarce electricity, and a depleting food supply.

But they aren’t the only ones whose cruise-ship vacations turned into disasters. From pirate attacks to vomit and diarrhea epidemics, more horror stories from the high seas.

1. Shipping Out: On the (nearly lethal) comforts of a luxury cruise

David Foster Wallace, Harper’s magazine, January 1996

David Foster Wallace’s famous treatise on cruise ships, where “they’ll micro-manage every iota of pleasure-option so that not even the dreadful corrosive action of your adult consciousness and agency and dread can fuck up your fun” makes cruise ships start to seem like surreal nightmare vessels. Stuck in the ship’s maddeningly endless cycle of karaoke, casinos, and other pre-determined fun, Wallace despairs at the shallow, synthetic happiness that cruise ships offer.

2. Somali Pirates Attack Cruise Ship

BBC, November 2005

It sounds like a Jack Sparrow tall tale, but in 2005, two boats containing pirates wielding guns and rocket-propelled grenades closed in on the Seabourn Spirit , a Bahamian-registered cruise liner carrying 302 passengers off the coast of Somalia. Luckily, some ingenious crew members used “an on-board loud acoustic bang” to make the pirates believe they were under fire, effectively deterring them.

3. Vomiting, Diarrhea Hit Celebrity Mercury

Scott Mayerowitz, ABC News, February 2010

We’re not sure which is worse: the Carnival Triumph ’s “sewage running down the walls” or the virus that spread to 400 people aboard the Celebrity Mercury , causing them to experience vomiting and diarrhea. The culprit? Norovirus, which Mayerowitz writes, causes stomach problems and “can often” hit cruise ships or other confined spaces.

4. Cruise-Ship Crime: ‘He Raped Me’

Vicki Mabrey, Lauren Effron, Glenn Silber, and Sally Hawkins, ABC News, February 2011

It’s the last thing parents are likely thinking about as they bring their kids on board for a week of high-seas fun, but in 2009, a 14-year-old girl aboard an eight-day Carnival Caribbean cruise was raped by one of the ship’s employees after she left her parents’ cabin at night because she was having trouble sleeping and went to write in her journal on the top deck of the ship. Prosecuting crimes committed aboard cruise ships can be difficult, since ships are often registered in foreign countries and are not necessarily subject to the same laws as the United States, but in this case, the offender was sentenced to 37 months in prison—which does not seem like enough to the victim and her family.

5. ‘Get on Board, Damn It!’

Barbie Latza Nadeau, The Daily Beast, January 2012

Around this time last year, news of the Costa Concordia ’s crash off the coast of Italy, killing 32 passengers and crew members, brought outrage at the ship’s captain, who veered from the authorized route without consulting anyone, to do a maritime “fly by” for the island of Giglio. Matters turned worse when a recording emerged of the port authority commanding the captain to return to his ship and determine how many passengers were still aboard—and the captain refusing out of concern for his own safety.

12 cruise ship horror stories that will make you want to stay on land

Cruising can be one of the most relaxing and enjoyable vacations a family can plan . With meals, entertainment, activities, and housekeeping included in the cost of your room, there is virtually nothing to worry about.

The popularity of cruises continues to rise. In fact, the latest State of the Cruise Industry report by Cruise Lines International Association estimated that 28 million passengers will cruise in 2018 . This is up from 26.7 million in 2017 and 25.2 million in 2016.

But with CLIA's report of nearly 450 cruise ships currently sailing worldwide and the unpredictability of mother nature, not every passenger on a cruise ship will experience the vacation of their dreams. In fact, in some cases, cruising can be a downright nightmare .

Here are some of the most unfortunate incidents that have happened on cruises in recent history.

More than 500 passengers became ill on Royal Caribbean cruises within 2 months.

carnival cruise line horror stories

In January, a spokesperson for Royal Caribbean Cruises announced that 47 passengers on The Grandeur of the Seas, which departed from Baltimore, reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness . A cruise from Singapore to Australia had over 200 reported cases of illness, and 332 cases of illness were reported on a cruise from Florida.

50 staterooms were affected by a flood on a Carnival Cruise Line ship.

carnival cruise line horror stories

Nearly 100 passengers aboard a seven-day cruise on the Carnival Dream received a refund and 50% off of a future cruise after their staterooms and hallways were flooded.

Carnival Cruise Line provided a statement to INSIDER, which explained that the flooding was caused by a waterline break in the fire-suppression system of the cruise ship.

A crew member was killed during a lifeboat drill.

carnival cruise line horror stories

A cruise ship crewmember on Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas was killed in September 2016 during a lifeboat drill. He was sitting with four other crew members in a lifeboat when it disconnected from the ship and fell 33 feet from the deck into the water in Marseille, France.

Passengers got stuck on a "cruise to nowhere" during Hurricane Irma.

carnival cruise line horror stories

Passengers on Norwegian Cruise Line ships Sky and Escape had to make an early return to Miami in September 2017 due to Hurricane Irma. Because it was nearly impossible to find hotel accommodations, the cruise line allowed displaced passengers to board the Escape on a "cruise to nowhere" until the storm passed.

Luckily, they had access to food, water, and alcohol and were not charged for the trip.

A man fell off one cruise ship and was rescued by another.

carnival cruise line horror stories

In January 2015, a passenger on a Royal Caribbean cruise fell off of the ship near Cozumel, Mexico. A passenger sitting on his balcony on the Disney Cruise Line ship Magic heard screams for help. The Disney Magic rescued the man, who was treated and flown back home to the United States.

Elevators and toilets stopped working on a Carnival Cruise.

carnival cruise line horror stories

In March 2013, toilets and elevators stopped working halfway through a seven-day cruise on the Carnival Dream.

"There's human waste all over the floor in some of the bathrooms and they're overflowing — and in the staterooms," passenger Gregg Stark told CNN of the incident.

Carnival cruise lines had to fly passengers back to Florida. They received a three-day refund and a half-price cruise in the future.

A ship with more than 4,000 passengers became stranded after a fire.

carnival cruise line horror stories

A fire in one of the diesel generators of the Carnival Triumph killed its propulsion, causing the ship to become stranded back in February 2013. The passengers had limited food and few working toilets and elevators while they waited for the ship to be tugged to shore.

A cruise ship lost a passenger's dialysis machine, and then kicked her off the boat.

carnival cruise line horror stories

A passenger was checking in for her Jamaican cruise in May 2012 when Carnival told her that they couldn't find her portable dialysis machine . The passenger, who needed nightly dialysis, was then escorted off of the ship without an explanation. The ship proceeded to sail away with the rest of her luggage, and presumably the lost medical equipment, on board.

Carnival issued an apology, refunded her ticket, and offered her credit for a future cruise.

Men hired to mingle with passengers were booted off a gay cruise and marooned in a war zone.

carnival cruise line horror stories

In June 2012, a group of men were hired to mingle with passengers on a Holland America gay cruise. When passengers saw photographers and videographers filming the men, they worried that pornography was being filmed on the ship. The men were forced off the ship at the first port-of-call , which was Tunisia — in the middle of the Arab Spring uprising.

According to the Wisconsin Gazette , the men were hired models who had "limited money, no Tunisian visas, no means of return passage and no ability to speak the local language." The men sued RSVP Vacations and Holland America.

32 people died when the Costa Concordia ran aground and sank.

carnival cruise line horror stories

In January 2012, the Costa Concordia, a 4,200-passenger cruise liner, was brought too close to shore in Italy and struck rocks, which tore a giant hole in its side. The ship ran aground and sank.

The captain of the Concordia was eventually sentenced to 16 years in prison after 32 passengers died. His charges included delaying evacuation and abandoning ship before all of his passengers and crew had been rescued.

More than 1,300 people were stranded on a Viking Sky cruise ship.

carnival cruise line horror stories

In March 2019, over 1,300 people were stranded on a Viking Sky cruise ship after the ship experienced engine problems off the coast of Norway because of stormy and rough weather.

Some of the passengers were airlifted off of the ship individually and some had to wait 24 hours for relief, according to The Washington Post. Small boats could not be used because of the weather conditions and some passengers told the paper that waves got so rough that one broke doors on the ship and threw passengers across the room.

Videos from people who said they were on the ship showed water inside of the ship and said that waves were 30 feet high. After evacuating 479 passengers by air , the conditions improved and the captain decided on a new plan, according to the AP. The ship was docked so the remaining passengers and crew could evacuate.

A cruise ship in Venice lost control and crashed into a smaller boat.

carnival cruise line horror stories

The MSC Opera, a massive cruise ship, crashed into a smaller tourist ship, the River Countess, after the Opera's engines reportedly got stuck.

The incident, which happened in Venice, Italy, in June 2019, left four people on the dockside injured .

The Carnival Triumph is being dragged sadly back to dock today after more than half a week of floating aimlessly in the Caribbean without power. About 4,200 passengers have been subjected to interminable days and nights of unsanitary conditions, horrible food, and profound boredom. But is that. . . really that much different from what normally happens on a cruise?

To investigate, we compared reviews of Carnival’s functional ships and quotes from Triumph’s hostages. See if you can see which descriptions apply to which situation:

A. “Having been on many Carnival ships in the past, this was, without a doubt, the most disappointing cruise ever.”

B. “this Platinum VIP will never set foot on a Carnival ship again”

C. “First time on a cruise, last time on a cruise”

D. “the most un-fun cruise I’ve ever experienced”

E. “My mother is a cruise travel agent so this is not my first rodeo. I have sailed many, many cruises, many, many cruise lines. This was, by far, I have to say, the worst.”

F. “I now know how my grandparents felt coming to America on a ship where people got sick, the food was awful and they did not leave the ship the whole time.”

G. “food poisoning”

H. “everyone on the ship was outraged”

I. “Everybody wants off of this. It’s a big mess.”

J. “This is one ‘Dream Class Ship’ that was a total nightmare!”

K. “Any cruise we take in the future will most definitely not be on Carnival, never again!”

L. “Room smells like an outhouse. Cold water only, toilets haven’t work in 3 1/2 days”

M. “Overnight one evening our toilet overflowed with ‘other’ people’s waste from our floor.”

N. “horrible”

O. “He waited for about three hours just to get her half a hamburger”

P. “For ten years I have defended Carnival when people bad-mouthed them. No more. Goodbye old friend, you certainly sent me off with a bang.”

Q. “She said ‘Mommy, it’s so scary. I want to come home. Just come get me.’”

R. “worst experience ever”

S. “I don’t know how much more we could have took.”

The Scariest Things That Ever Happened On Cruise Ships

Karen Belz

Many people use the summer season as a time to book trips. They might plan a lazy beach weekend or a trip abroad. A lot of people even book cruises ; they get to enjoy beautiful waters, eat an abundance of food, and drink to their hearts’ content. Usually, those water-filled excursions are relaxing  and  fun. Sometimes, though, things get a little chaotic out on sea. And these cruise ship horror stories prove it.

Cruise ships will always be popular, though. They’re always packed with a lot of fun entertainment . Most have activities and bars on board, along with swimming pools and, sometimes, a celebrity act or two.

Even though this list shouldn’t scare you away from booking a cruise, it’s important to know that cruise ship disasters happen somewhat frequently. An unexpected shortage of food could occur or someone on board may sustain an injury that requires immediate medical attention. The situation could be just a memorable blip or it might send passengers home earlier than expected.

Here are some of the most disastrous events that happened on cruise ships. They may make you want to rethink your summer plans.

 1. The Tilted Ship

[fm_instagram url=”https://www.instagram.com/p/BzQmSD5grf1/”]

This Carnival Cruise went awry quickly.

In 2018, plates and bottles smashed to the ground after an error with a Carnival Cruise ship’s fin stabilizer. In fact, the faulty part derailed the entire excursion , and the ship had to dock in the Dominican Republic for repairs and maintenance. The episode was so scary that many of the ship’s passengers cut the trip short and flew to their various homes. Luckily, the cruise crew identified the problem early.

2. The Costa Concordia Disaster

[fm_instagram url=”https://www.instagram.com/p/BsiRbxVgpF3/”]

A little tilt is scary, sure.

But a small tilt can easily turn catastrophic if the ship’s captain doesn’t move quickly and efficiently. One such thing happened when the Costa Concordia, which operated from 2005 until 2012, tilted. During the wreckage and confusion, 32 passengers and crew members lost their lives. It took over six hours for people to fully evacuate from the ship. And photos of the event are absolutely frightening.

3. The Pirate Attack

[fm_instagram url=”https://www.instagram.com/p/BmOQvz0l60R/”]

Few people think pirates still roam the seas.

They most certainly do, though. And CBS News reported that in 2005, pirates actually attacked a Seabourn Spirit cruise ship. The band of ship robbers initiated the takeover by firing a grenade while the ship was close to Somalia. Passengers went down to the dining area for safety, however. And nobody sustained any serious injuries in the attack.

4. The S.S. Eastland Disaster

[fm_instagram url=”https://www.instagram.com/p/BlMEtqDg7i2/”]

The S.S. Eastland suffered many fatalities in 1915.

Interestingly, though, the ship captains docked the entire vessel to host a gathering for Western Electric employees . Reportedly, 844 passengers and crew members passed after the ship rolled onto its side. Choppy waters or tumultuous sailing weather had nothing to do with the accident. And it’s a bit eerie to realize a ship doesn’t have to be out in the middle of an ocean for a disaster to strike.

5. Carnival Triumph’s Sewage Disaster

[fm_instagram url=”https://www.instagram.com/p/VxNgLKMIA3/”]

This trainwreck of a cruise ship incident occurred in 2013.

The Carnival Cruise ship passengers expected to hang out in the Caribbean for four idyllic days. Instead, their holiday turned tragic. And everyone endured hardly livable conditions on board after the ship caught on fire and lost power. The sewage got more than a little clogged. Let’s just say, people referred to this particular voyage as the “Poop Cruise.”

6. The Marital Murder

[fm_instagram url=”https://www.instagram.com/p/Bvt1O-yFqaV/”]

The passengers can be dangerous too.

Kristy Manzanares was enjoying herself on an Alaskan cruise ship back in 2017. Things took a truly horrific turn in 2017, though. The woman’s husband, Kenneth, fatally attacked during a moment of intense rage and aggression. What caused Kenneth to snap? According to an acquaintance who spoke to the aggressor , Kristy “wouldn’t stop laughing” at him.

7. The Viking Sky’s Power Loss

[fm_instagram url=”https://www.instagram.com/p/BvZCDpglYD4/”]

When a ship loses power, things tend to get chaotic .

In March of 2019, for example, the Viking Sky cruise ship was traveling around Norway when they lost power in one of the most treacherous areas of the trip. At least 890 passengers witnessed the windows shatter. The cabins also flooded due to the dangerous weather conditions. Thankfully, no one passed, but 20 people sustained injuries .

8. Royal Caribbean Cruises Spread Illness

[fm_instagram url=”https://www.instagram.com/p/BwcPA–lJZH/”]

Passengers of the Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas cruise ship will remember their trip forever, for all the wrong reasons.

During the Oasis of the Seas voyage, a whopping 500 passengers caught a gastrointestinal disease . The huge cruiseliner was meant to sail through the Caribbean, but so few people could even stomach the voyage. Consequently, the captain cut the entire trip short. The good news is that the passengers all received refunds for their troubles.

9. The Antigua Robbery

[fm_instagram url=”https://www.instagram.com/p/BzYiiJyoSqQ/”]

This cruise made everyone a lot more stressful.

In fact, it’s hard to picture a situation where being robbed at knifepoint wouldn’t make you a little uneasy. In February of 2018, two French passengers were out and about in Antigua while their MSC cruise ship docked. And in a horrible turn of events, the aggressor in a violent robbery stabbed one of the passengers in the abdomen. Fortunately, the authorities found and charged the suspects.

10. The Carnival Splendor Fire

[fm_instagram url=”https://www.instagram.com/p/BzTCLpChKa3/”]

A fire started and the electricity went out.

Passengers on the 201o Carnival Splendor cruise faced challenging situations instead of the nice vacation they planned. After the fire started and the power completely halted, vacationers had to survive on Pop Tarts and hot dog salads . They definitely didn’t get the luxurious buffets they paid for. Luckily, nobody was hurt, but their holidays were cut short.

11. The Possible Murder

[fm_instagram url=”https://www.instagram.com/p/BzYSisYhfw5/”]

Some people lose their lives in very suspicious circumstances.

And a woman in her 50s passed after a serious of particularly confusing events. Princess Cruises revealed that one of their ship’s passengers died on board during 2018. But the company didn’t elaborate on any of the details. In fact, reports suggested passengers saw the woman jump overboard. However, USA Today noted that witnesses allegedly watched a man choke the victim before her body ever left the ship, which was sailing near Aruba at the time.

12. The Missing Honeymooner

[fm_instagram url=”https://www.instagram.com/p/BzRnq3phSeQ/”]

Passengers actually go missing on some cruise ships.

And George Smith IV , who celebrated his honeymoon in 2005 with a tour of the Aegean Sea, experienced this first hand. Smith was with his new wife, Jennifer Hagel Smith, on the Brilliance of the Seas ship, before he vanished. On the man’s last known night, though, he reportedly drank heavily and had a loud argument with other men on the ship.

13. The Mass Robbery

[fm_instagram url=”https://www.instagram.com/p/BzYm3wWhlWx/”]

Robberies can happen any time, but when there are 22 victims, the story gets a little fishier

Things were especially confusing during a robbery in 2012. Over two dozen Carnival Cruise Line passengers lost their passports and other valuables while eating at a restaurant in the Mexico leg of their trip. No one sustained any injuries, but Carnival did suspend the tour for future sailings, according to CNN . The company also agreed to work with the victims to figure out a reimbursement plan.

14. Norovirus Outbreak

[fm_instagram url=”https://www.instagram.com/p/ykdu6NhsYS/”]

Hundreds of people got sick at once.

Illnesses spread quickly in inclosed spaces. So in 2010, when a Celebrity Cruise ship had a norovirus outbreak, everyone suffered. The vessel departed from North Carolina and ended up as the site where over 400 passengers — approximately one out of every four person — fell ill. They all contracted the disease. Symptoms included vomiting, diarrhea, muscle cramps , and a low-grade fever. No thanks.

15. Invasion Of Privacy

[fm_instagram url=”https://www.instagram.com/p/BzYb2UHl4HK/”]

You don’t expect a cruise ship to install cameras in your private lodgings.

But one couple had their privacy expectations completely shattered during a 2018 Carnival cruise . In particular, Chris and Dana White found a recording device in their room during a quick water excursion. Understandably, they felt like the entire company egregiously invaded their space. The Carnival cruise line reportedly denied that the camera was actively recording, but the White family disagreed.

Cruise Ship Workers Are Sharing Their Horror Stories And It's Wild

"The ship was considering going into quarantine at sea but luckily, we didn't."

Fabiana Buontempo

BuzzFeed Contributor

If you've ever vacationed on a cruise ship, you know things run pretty smoothly from the passenger's point of view. But from a worker's perspective, a lot of things go on behind the scenes that people luckily don't know about.

Reddit user u/imDudekid was clearly curious to find out as they asked the question , "Cruise ship workers of reddit, what was the biggest 'oh shit' moment on the boat that, luckily, passengers didn’t find out about at all?"

The responses are really something else...

1. "water pipe burst in a store room and soaked all of the spare toilet paper. this was on day 2 of a 14-day voyage to antarctica.".

"The cabin stewards had to swap around rolls of paper between 'low use' and 'high use' guest cabins and it came right down the wire. None of the guests found out or realized. Now toilet paper is hidden in every cabin instead of a centralized location." — u/myjobisawesome

2. "Fires. I worked on a cruise ship for 2.5 years and we had three major fires. They were all in crew areas and were controlled and extinguished by our awesome fire team. The passengers never knew what happened, only that their waiter had to leave in the middle of dinner service."

"People don't realize how much training the crew members go through to handle these situations. And they will never know that their waiter just helped save the whole goddamn ship." — u/wanderinggal

3. "I worked on a ship almost 15 years ago. Many stories. This happened to a friend of mine. A family came on. They had a teenage son, who was not interested in the cruise."

"As soon as the family got to their room, he jumped off his balcony (which is insanely dangerous). They fished him out and the family got kicked off the ship."

— u/rothmaniac

4. "I was playing a production show (guitar) and was standing on stage with a wireless unit alone to play 'Purple Rain,' and then all of the sudden the house lights came on and the curtains closed."

"Everyone in the audience looked at me, and I ran off the stage. Turns out a sewage pipe burst backstage and there was shit everywhere. Show was canceled and the passengers didn't find out why." — u/Lacklusterbeverage

5. "I was a cruise ship worker for a few years and on a route between two cities there was a really bad storm. So a few minutes after the passengers got off, the storm got so rough that the ship was ripped off the docks and drifted out to sea."

"Because it takes quite a while to start up the engines, it took some time until we got back to the harbor. Not really dangerous but if it had happened while the passengers were disembarking, it could have gone badly." — u/idontmindtherain78

6. "I used to be a crew member and one time a guy working at the front desk jumped overboard after a crew party. He was found a few hours later by the coast guard and everybody was asked to be discreet in order to keep the cruise running smoothly. And everything was fine until the captain came on the PA and said we were delayed because a crew member jumped overboard."

"Then the madness begins, rumors appear out of nowhere, and the rest of the cruise was pretty much guests asking what happened the whole time." — u/rjdac

7. "My 'oh shit' moment was when I was hired for a ship with two-day notice as a trombone player. When I got on the ship, I found out that I was replacing a guy who had just died in a jet skiing accident in Nicaragua."

"Everyone in the crew knew it (and the last cruise's passengers knew it) and the entire band that I was joining was obviously traumatized. In the end, it ended up being my favorite contract but the first few weeks were difficult for everyone. RIP bone guy. I never knew you but I know they all loved you." — u/trustustoo

8. "One of the waiters had to go to the backroom really bad but it was during the dinner rush so the supervisor told him to wait. He ended up running out of the restaurant and shitting his pants on the way out and left a trail behind him."

— u/SarcasticGamer

9. "I currently work for a cruise line. I have assisted people who want to bury their loved ones at sea. Obviously, the bodies have to have been cremated and the ashes have to be in a biodegradable container."

— u/onegreatboard

10. "I am a cruise ship worker. First one is, we don't want you to know that we actually have more fun than the guests. Sure, we'll work the big white hot party that you're all going to but once we finish our shift, all hell is breaking loose in the crew bar."

— u/Pixielix

11. "I’m working on a cruise ship currently. One time we had to turn around to take someone to a hospital and then there was a fire in the laundry room, and it was also pretty rocky seas."

— u/PM_ME_DEEP_QUESTIONS

12. "Somebody shot at the navigation bridge of the ship from the shore on my last ship, the bullet bounced off and hit my colleague on the hand (no real damage but it scared the hell out of her, ended up going home for a few weeks)."

"While we waited for the local police to come on and investigate and take statements, guests were told we were delaying the departure to take on fresh water. I'm still shocked that never leaked out." — u/ElGofre

13. "Only one I have witnessed were two fires in the engine rooms. Scary thought but because of the nature of the ships, normal workers are picked to be firefighter-trained."

"So your onboard firefighters will be engineers or wait staff or galley men. They chose the big bulky ones who wont be blown over when the water comes out the hose." — u/Pixielix

14. "One of the dancers in the cast got his foot caught in one of the hydraulic stage lifts... Crushed two of his toes."

— u/Barfuzio

15. "Worked on ships for about four years. On embarkation day, all the public areas of the ship are open like the theater, spa, gym, etc., so new passengers can see them and get settled in (but mostly so we could sell them packages)."

"An older man was checking out the gym in regular clothes (jeans, Hawaiian shirt, flip-flops probably) and decided to go for a run on the treadmill. He had a heart attack and died right there in the gym before the cruise even started. Because we were still in port, Miami PD and the coroner had to come on and investigate, etc. The problem was the gym and treadmills on this ship had a huge glass wall to the pool deck. Who knows how many people witnessed him die before the crew had a chance to close down the space. The crew simply closed the pool area and gym, the coroner took the body, and the cruise set sail a few hours late. No announcement was ever made." — u/ThrashNet

16. "A teenage girl and her 10-ish-year-old brother had a serious argument on an open deck at night. She was much bigger than him. She picked him up by his throat and held him over the side of the ship."

"We were doing a Baltic run and between some ports with serious distance between them, so the ship was sailing around 26 knots and it was pitch black. Security happened upon them while this was happening and, thank god, prevented an either intentional or accidental Oscar (man overboard). The girl was kept in the brig until morning, and the family was disembarked and repatriated immediately." — u/kmc307

17. "I worked on a cruise for a year. During a rehearsal in the main auditorium, one of the dancers got his foot caught in the crack of the hydraulic platform that raises up and down. Because some of the safety sensors were broken, the lift completely shut and sucked his foot into the space between the platform and the stage which was about a centimeter. I was friends with a lot of the dancers who witnessed it and they were pretty shook up from the screams."

"After they got him stabilized, the captain came on and told us we were making a stop in Cabo so he could be flown back to the States for emergency surgery. I felt so bad for him. It was his first contract and he was so excited to be there."

— u/atcitizen100

18. "The ship always needs a certain number of crew members on board so when it's your week/cruise to be a designated crew member, your passport and ID are confiscated so you literally cannot leave the ship."

— u/hatramroany

19. "I worked on ships for three years and boy, the stories you hear about or live through. This one takes the cake, though. My colleague in the kids center who we all found creepy AF is now a convicted sexual predator serving 14 years."

20. "my first week on the ship, a crew member committed suicide. the captain announced over the ship pa that there was an unexpected death of a crew member but didn't mention the circumstances. the guests knew someone had died and that the crew was taking over the theater for a memorial, but not how he died.".

— u/deakers

21. "I used to work for a cruise. During one cruise, we had four passengers die from flu. The ship was considering going into quarantine at sea but luckily, we didn't."

— u/smokingmonkeybaby

22. "I worked on one and we had a complete power failure in the middle of the water near Southeast Asia somewhere. It was in the middle of the day so everyone knew. Just sat there for hours as the temperature and humidity gradually rose until it was about as high as outside."

"I simply tried to put on a happy face and kept working the photo gallery. Even made an exception to the 'no phones in front of the passengers' rule to use my phone’s flashlight app to let them see their photos." — u/CaptainJAmazing

23. "My ship hit a massive rock. No one knew except the officers. We took on water but not enough to stop the cruise. We sailed into our last port Seward, Alaska, which is when the captain decided to inform the crew. New passengers were turned away. We spent two weeks slowly cruising to Freeport, Bahamas, to get all fixed up."

— u/radical33

24. "Worked for a major cruise line for a year. We had to spray several bottles of a bleach solution over every surface of the kids clubrooms every night because of norovirus outbreaks. Passengers got sick but the company somehow kept it out of the media."

— u/Tokugawa1600

25. "I'm three days into working on a small cruise ship and there has already been a fire in the laundry room, a crew member almost died from a food allergy, and we crashed into the side of a lock/dam/passageway and it caused an entire liquor cabinet to come crashing down. I'm a housekeeper and the cabinet was in a room I'm responsible for so that was much fun..."

'I just felt so helpless': Carnival Sunrise cruise ship faces flooding

carnival cruise line horror stories

A Carnival Cruise Line ship faced flooding on its way back to Miami over the weekend.

Carnival Sunrise was returning from a five-day Caribbean cruise at the time. Passenger Rachel Cox woke up to pounding on her cabin door around 2 a.m. on Saturday.

As she and her family got out of bed, they stepped into what she estimated was 2 to 4 inches of water. “We opened the door and people are yelling and screaming ‘Hey, we're taking on water. We're flooding,’ ” she told USA TODAY.

Cox, 38, was staying in an inside cabin on Deck 10 with her partner and son, and her mother and daughter stayed in the adjacent room.

After a man wearing what looked like a security uniform told them to go to their muster station, they gathered their belongings and scrambled down the stairs – in part because water was pooling around the elevator bank.

“We're literally running down the stairwells, and as we are, (on) every single floor water's just coming out of the ceilings, it’s coming up through the floor, we see water on the sides of the walls,” said the Arkansas-based nonprofit executive director.

The captain came to speak with Cox and other guests holed up in the ship’s Liquid Lounge. He informed them that the vessel had taken on water and that bad weather had changed their route, though Cox said the captain did not get specific. Cox and her family did not hear any other official updates from the line, but the crew distributed bottled water and a small number of blankets to passengers.

They stayed there until they got off the ship shortly after 8 a.m. Saturday (though Cox and her partner did go back upstairs briefly to retrieve their life jackets).

Story continues below.

“Carnival Sunrise encountered heavy rain while the ship was returning to Miami overnight Friday into Saturday,” Carnival spokesperson Matt Lupoli said in an emailed statement. “Some staterooms were taken out of service for Saturday's departure as our team completed clean up and replaced carpet. Those guests who were not able to sail were provided full refunds, a future cruise credit and received overnight accommodations if they needed them.”

Cox said the cruise line did not initially offer her a refund or other compensation, despite her belongings getting wet, including large suitcases the crew had stored ahead of disembarkation. She contacted Carnival when she got home and said she didn’t hear back until Wednesday morning, when a guest services representative asked to set up a call.

A couple of hours later, the cruise line also sent her a note signed by Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy, offering a 25% future cruise credit and inviting guests to submit documentation for review of damage to personal belongings.

“On behalf of the entire Carnival family, I am writing to express our sincerest apologies for the inconvenience you experienced as a result of the water intrusion incident that occurred the final night of the voyage,” Duffy said in the email, which Cox shared with USA TODAY. “We understand that being moved from your stateroom during those late hours must have been frustrating, and we deeply regret the disruption to your plans and comfort.”

Lupoli said in a separate statement that passengers "affected by the flooding incident on Carnival Sunrise were directed to the main lounge, not their muster stations, where our team worked to make them as comfortable as possible."

"The captain apologized for what occurred on board, a burst pipe due to a large amount of rainwater, and our Guest Care team has followed up as well, sending a letter and issuing a credit for those inconvenienced," he said. "We appreciate their understanding and support."

What is the best time to take a cruise?: We broke it down by region

Cox, who has been on over a dozen Carnival cruises, said the experience soured her on taking another – at least for now. “I had several pleasant experiences before this one, but at this moment in time, I can't imagine ever getting on another ship because I just felt so helpless.”

The news comes after Royal Caribbean International’s Serenade of the Seas, which is now operating the nine-month Ultimate World Cruise, also experienced flooding after rough weather off the coast of South America in January.

Carnival cruise ship rescues nearly 30 people from adrift vessel

carnival cruise line horror stories

A Carnival Cruise Line ship rescued nearly 30 people who were stuck at sea on Sunday.

The crew on Carnival Paradise saved 28 Cuban nationals who were signaling for help on a vessel that was adrift around 2:30 p.m. The cruise ship was headed from Tampa, Florida, to Roatan in Honduras at the time.

“The bridge team onboard spotted the vessel and turned the ship around to rescue them,” Carnival said in a news release . “All were taken aboard, given food and were seen by the medical team.” The cruise line also notified the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West and officials in Roatan.

The Coast Guard did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

The ship was set to visit Roatan on Monday. Carnival Paradise is on a five-day Caribbean cruise that departed from Tampa on Saturday, according to CruiseMapper .

The news comes after Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Apex ship rescued seven people in a small vessel adrift between Cuba and Mexico earlier this month. Another Carnival ship, Carnival Jubilee, also rescued two people stuck in a kayak off the coast of Mexico’s Isla Mujeres in January.

Sensation Wedding Horror Story

Cool Cruiser

Just heard the groom being interviewed on the radio about this. Apparently he'll be on Inside Edition tonight, I think they said.

While I do feel sorry for the couple and their families, unfortunately that is the risk that you take when you book such a special occasion on a cruise ship.

Just wondering - does Carnival offer insurance for their wedding packages? And if they do, and this couple had purchased it, wouldn't they be reimbursed? If they don't already sell insurance for this, maybe someone should.

Reunioncruiser

Why was the wedding at 1:30 on embarkation day? It seems like they can't guarantee that time due to various reasons, some beyond their control. Do they allow wedding guests to go to the wedding and then get back off the ship before it leaves for the cruise?

5,000+ Club

I feel bad for them and hope they do get compensated.

However, the author and editor should be fired for this line: "Andrew and Emily Pidgeon, of Palm Bay, were expecting a sensation of a wedding aboard the Carnival Sensation."

C'mon ... they were expecting a *feeling* of a wedding? A *cause of a feeling* of a wedding? The word is "sensational". *shakes head*

FanofFlorida

FanofFlorida

to save face, Carnival would be smart to give a full refund- although the circumstances are beyond their control, they may find themselves with many fewer bookings after bad press like this.... really!

Theresa522

Yes the do allow guests on for the wedding/reception. Then after "off the ship" they go. :D

It would be in CCL's best (media exposed) interest to fully reimburse the Pidgeons for what happened. I put myself in the groom's shoes for a moment, especially when people came sauntering in for lifeboat muster and grabbing for plates at their own special buffet that was paid for in full. I can understand the time being off, but still, a lot of those issues could have been taken care of through compensation.

big_duck

That's exactly what the do. 99.9% it goes off without a hitch. Getting married portside is a lot safer then arranging for one in the islands where weather or other issues could force itinerary changes especially tender ports.

Not much Carnival can do about a frickin bomb scare though.

kelz66

I guess noone else was affected by the bomb hoax but them...

just one of a thousand stories...must be a slow news week.

No, but they could have kept the general public away from the buffet the wedding couple had paid for, amongst other things.

Yeah basically you can have your wedding on the ship and you can have people who aren't going on the cruise on the ship with you. Under normal circumstances the wedding party are the first people that get to board the ship, then you can have the wedding and reception on the ship before the ship ever leaves port. Then, those who aren't cruising with you leave the ship as the ship prepares to pull away.

But since there was a bomb hoax on the inbound sailing earlier in the day, everything got pushed back and they didn't get to start the wedding until the time when they probably should have been wrapping things up.

Also they just said that they are filming for Inside Edition tomorrow, so it probably won't be airing for a couple days at least. There's also a video interview at the link I post.

gonzo1124

It's bad, but the way I see it is like planning an outside wedding where you run the risk of rain.

I feel for them, but things happen that can be out of control. Imagine if they would have let everyone in for the wedding and there was really a problem.

I couldn't think of where this would be held other then the Lido Buffet, the pay part being for non-sailing guests. I could be wrong though.

iluvdoxies

Although Carnival is not at fault for the bomb scare, they should really save face and reimburse the full cost back to the couple, and comp them a cruise. Think about how horrified you would be if this happened at your wedding, I dont blame them for taking this to the media. The bad press will probably cost them a lot more in the long run, than if they were to just reimburse the couple.

On the couple of cruises I've been on that had weddings, it was usually in a lounge or a more private area.

Lots of places---the piano bar, the library, the disco or a private room/

hoop4321

while i do feel for the couple, things happen. Look at America's Funniest Home Videos.....all that priceless weddings gone wrong footage. They should be refunded for the wedding. It was not what Carnival sold them....additional "guests" for their buffet....and when i read the comments there was a member of the wedding party that responded, she said that a member of the staff said to "get over it, no one got hurt." If they did say that...that was very bad customer service.:(

"Unfortunately for the Pidgeons, the cake-cutting and toast was taking place at a muster station. To the couple's shock, in came the passengers donning life jackets.

"And people are coming in," Emily said, "And they're like, 'Look a buffet!' And they're coming in and making up their plates, and they're eating all of our food."

While passengers were picking at the Pidgeons buffet, the cruise staff was warning the wedding guests to leave."

BETTER than any mustard drill I've been to.

Ceremony yes, but from the article it appears to have been a sit down dining affair, like I said, dunno. It has been my experience that a lot of Carnival cruisers don't know what a sign marked "Private Function" means.
Too true, Duck. Too true.

Well it looks like Carnival is trying to make good, it just comes down to negotiating how much "make good" comes to.

Carnival doesn't advertise a pre-ceremony buffet in my wedding material sent to me last week. Just access to the Lido for non sailing guests for $10 a piece. They told us that our luncheon will be in an MDR which is closed off to guests.

"The Pidgeons had paid for a pre-ceremony buffet, but amid the chaos they found non-invited cruise passengers wandering in and out of their dining area. The buffet was not to be."

I am purchasing wedding insurance- i buy travel insurance, and I paid more for the wedding than the cruise so it just makes sense.

I feel sorry for this couple being short changed on their wedding- hopefully they come to a solution.

This is part of the wedding contract I have to sign:

AGREEMENT: It is understood and agreed that Carnival Cruise Lines and/or A Wedding For You shall not be liable and denies responsibility in the event a scheduled wedding cannot take place or is delayed due to circumstances beyond the control of Carnival Cruise Lines and/or A Wedding For You. Suit to recover any claim under this agreement shall not be maintainable unless commenced within 6 months after the date of loss. It is agreed between the parties that all disputes arising under this contract shall be litigated, if at all in, Miami-Dade County to the exclusion of any other jurisdictions. Carnival has the right to return to or enter any port at the Master's discretion and for any purpose and to deviate in any direction or for any purpose from the direct or usual course, and to omit or change any or all port calls, arrival or departure times, with our without notice for any reason whatsoever, all such deviations being considered as forming part of and included in the proposed voyage. Carnival shall have no liability for any compensation or other damages to the wedding couple or any of their guests due to any changes or deviations from the proposed itinerary and has no obligation to take measures to ensure the attendance at the wedding ceremony of any guests of the wedding couple. We have read and understood foregoing and back of this contract and we agree to the terms contained therein.

Because it was a bomb scare- that may fall in "out of their control" and if it does, then Carnival has offered them fair compensation IMHO.

At least these people have a reasonable complaint. It's not like the coconut cake couple from a while back.

The buffet was not to be."   I am purchasing wedding insurance- i buy travel insurance, and I paid more for the wedding than the cruise so it just makes sense.   I feel sorry for this couple being short changed on their wedding- hopefully they come to a solution.   This is part of the wedding contract I have to sign: AGREEMENT: It is understood and agreed that Carnival Cruise Lines and/or A Wedding For You shall not be liable and denies responsibility in the event a scheduled wedding cannot take place or is delayed due to circumstances beyond the control of Carnival Cruise Lines and/or A Wedding For You.

Thanks for coming and putting in your "2 cents". It is very valuable as you are going through the process right now, and on the same class of ship too.

11 cruise ship horror stories that will make you want to stay on land

Cruising can be one of the most relaxing and enjoyable vacations a family can plan . With meals, entertainment, activities, and housekeeping included in the cost of your room, there is virtually nothing to worry about.

cruise ship

Sarah Schmalbruch/INSIDER

In January, a spokesperson for Royal Caribbean Cruises announced that 47 passengers on The Grandeur of the Seas, which departed from Baltimore, reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness . A cruise from Singapore to Australia had over 200 reported cases of illness, and 332 cases of illness were reported on a cruise from Florida.

A cruise ship crewmember on Royal Caribbeans Harmony of the Seas was killed in September 2016 during a lifeboat drill . He was sitting with four other crew members in a lifeboat when it disconnected from the ship and fell 33 feet from the deck into the water in Marseille, France.

Passengers got stuck on a "cruise to nowhere" during Hurricane Irma.

In March 2013, toilets and elevators stopped working halfway through a seven-day cruise on the Carnival Dream.

"There's human waste all over the floor in some of the bathrooms and they're overflowing and in the staterooms," passenger Gregg Stark told CNN of the incident.

Carnival cruise lines had to fly passengersback to Florida. They received a three-day refund and a half-price cruise in the future.

A ship with more than 4,000 passengers became stranded after a fire.

REUTERS/U.S. Coast Guard/Lt. Cmdr. Paul McConnell/Handout

A fire in one of the diesel generators of the Carnival Triumph killed its propulsion, causing the ship to become stranded back in February 2013. The passengers had limited food and few working toilets and elevators while they waited for the ship to be tugged to shore.

A cruise ship lost a passengers dialysis machine, and then kicked her off the boat.

REUTERS/Stringer

In June 2012, a group of men were hired to mingle with passengers on a Holland America gay cruise. When passengers saw photographers and videographers filming the men, they worried that pornography was being filmed on the ship. The men were forced off the ship at the first port-of-call , which was Tunisia in the middle of the Arab Spring uprising.

According to the Wisconsin Gazette , the men were hired models who had "limited money, no Tunisian visas, no means of return passage and no ability to speak the local language." The men sued RSVP Vacations and Holland America.

32 people died when the Costa Concordia ran aground and sank.

In January 2012, the Costa Concordia, a 4,200-passenger cruise liner, was brought too close to shore in Italy and struck rocks, which tore a giant hole in its side. The ship ran aground and sank .

The captain of the Concordia was eventually sentenced to 16 years in prison after 32 passengers died. His charges included delaying evacuation and abandoning ship before all of his passengers and crew had been rescued.

More than 1,300 people were stranded on a Viking Sky cruise ship.

NTB Scanpix/Svein Ove Ekornesvag via REUTERS

The ship was docked so the remaining passengers and crew could evacuate.

carnival cruise line horror stories

Carnival Cruise Line shares strict drink rule some may not like

C ruise lines sort of get to pick and choose the rules they follow based on where they sail. In most cases, if they sail out of North American ports, they abide by U.S. law but that's not universally true.

MSC Cruises, for example, does not provide Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax forms when they hit a jackpot bigger than $1,199 in its casinos. Technically, if the winner is a U.S. citizen, they still owe taxes on their winnings, they just don't get a 1099 telling the IRS about their win.

Related: Royal Caribbean cuts back a popular loyalty program benefit

Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Virgin Voyages, and other cruise lines do use that form which can lead to a slow collection process when a passenger hits a jackpot. Cruise ship casinos also use 18 as their gambling age even though most U.S. casinos, but not all, have 21 as the minimum age.

All the major cruise lines that sail out of the U.S. also use 21 as the legal age to drink alcohol on their ships. That rule does not change when the ship stops in a port where the drinking age is younger.

That means that, in some ports, 18-20-year-olds can legally drink, but not once they get back on the ship. The cruise line's brand ambassador John Heald recently shared some key news about its alcohol policies on its website.

Carnival makes its alcohol rules clear

Carnival has an onboard drinking age of 21 and Heald recently made it clear that there were no exceptions to that. He shared a message he got from a customer he did not name.

"We are taking a cruise with our 19-year-old daughter and her 18-year-old girlfriend. I was told that Carnival Cruises has a Young Adult Alcoholic Beverage Waiver form available at the Guest Services Desk for parents to sign to allow their 20-year-olds to drink on the Panorama. I called Carnival and was told the form was not available on they were sketchy about if this could be done or not. Can it and if not why not because my daughter and partner are not children?" the upcoming passenger asked.

Heald was playful and direct in his answer.

"Well then, it's certainly not my place to judge how other parents, ummmm, parent. However, I find it a wee bit strange that a parent would ask for this," he shared. "...We don't have a waiver and will not be allowing these ladies to be served alcohol. I have written to the guest and explained this. Her response to me was disappointing, to say the least."

Carnival does have good news for 18-20-year-olds

While Heald made it clear that Carnival ( CCL ) does not allow underage drinking on its ships, it has taken steps to make it easer for passengers 18-20 years old to meet.

"So, this morning I want to talk about 18-20-year-olds and first some good news. Following some of you writing to me here saying there should be a meet and greet and a chance for this age group to meet new friends I am happy to tell you that there now is," he wrote.

This move follows Royal Caribbean, which created its Hyperlink group to help passengers in that age group meet. The Carnival program does not include events, just a meetup, while Royal's has regularly scheduled programming for the group.

Heald explained how the Carnival program will work.

"On every ship on the first seaday (not embarkation day), there will be a meet and greet under the supervision of one of the brilliant Fun Squad members. They will meet and hopefully enjoy a chance to meet new friends, follow each other on Insta and Tit Tock, and enjoy the cruise with people of their own age. Check the Hubb app or the paper copy of the Funtimes for information," he added.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating two seemingly separate outbreaks of Norovirus linked to U.S. cruise ships.

Cases have been linked to Princess Cruises' Sapphire Princess and Royal Caribbean International's Radiance of the Seas.

The CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) is tracking the "very contagious" outbreaks following reports of passengers in distress .

Approximately 67 out of 1,993 passengers on the Radiance of the Seas reported falling ill during its voyage from Tampa to Los Angeles between Apr. 8 and 22. An additional two crew members also reported illness .

The predominant symptoms reported from those affected by the Norovirus were diarrhea and vomiting.

Approximately 94 of 2,532 passengers on the Sapphire Princess reported similar symptoms during its voyage from Los Angeles into the South Pacific that began Apr. 5 and is scheduled to conclude on May 7.

An additional 20 members of the 1,066 crew reported symptoms as well.

Fox Business reached out to both Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean International for comment on the situation but did not receive a response.

"Norovirus is a very contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea. Anyone can get infected and sick with Norovirus," the CDC states on its website. "Norovirus is sometimes called the 'stomach flu' or 'stomach bug.' However, norovirus illness is not related to the flu, which is caused by influenza virus."

One of the biggest health risks posed by Norovirus infection is dehydration — the CDC recommends those infected drink plenty of liquids to aid recovering.

The CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program requires cruise lines to report and document cases of illness on their ships in order to facilitate coordinated responses in case of emergency.
