Cat Ba Island is the biggest of the 367 islands that form the Cat Ba archipelago. It’s approximately 32 miles (50 kilometers) from Hai Phong City, a trip which takes up to 1 hour to travel by speedboat. Cat Ba is also by far the biggest island in the whole of Halong Bay.

• Cat Ba Island is located in the Gulf of Tonkin, near Hai Phong City in northeastern Vietnam.
• Cat Ba Island is the largest island in the Cat Ba Archipelago, covering an area of over 300 square kilometers.
• Cat Ba Island is known for its stunning natural beauty, with its towering cliffs, lush forests, and crystal-clear waters.

For transport, visitors can rent motorbikes to explore the island and see as much as they can on their visit. One highly recommended activity for those visiting Cat Ba is a trek around the National Park and even up Ngu Lam mountain!

Cat Ba Island has three main beaches (named Cat Ba 1, Cat Ba 2 and, Cat Ba 3) where visitors can get their tan on and enjoy a dip in the ocean. For those who are more physically inclined, there are activities such as rock climbing, kayaking, and snorkeling.

Due to its increasing popularity with visitors, Cat Ba Island has a well-developed tourist infrastructure, with hotels and hostels available for prospective visitors, good roads and a ferry terminal.

The best time to visit Cat Ba Island all depends on your personal preferences. If you enjoy the heat of tropical summers, June to August is probably the best time to go.

If you enjoy milder weather, October till March is a better time to go. Be mindful of the fact that even though Cat Ba has four seasons, there’s still a rainy and dry season.

From Hanoi (124 km)

Hopping on a Hanoi-Haiphong highway bus will get you from Hanoi to Cat Ba island in around 3-5 hours (4 hours on average). There are various operators, but try Cat Ba Express, Good Morning Cat Ba for reasonable price and good service.

From Halong bay (22,7 km)

The best way to get to Cat Ba island is to leave from Halong Bay. Once in Halong Bay, the best way to get to the island is to take a ferry. There are three ferries a day that go to the northern side of the island. The ferry takes about an hour and is 80.000 VND or 100.000VND if you’re traveling on a motorbike. From there it’s about a 40-minute drive to Cat Ba town. There’s a bus that costs around 30.000VND. There are taxis as well but be mindful as they might and try to scam you with outrageous prices. From Hai Phong (33 km)

There are multiple ways to travel to Cat Ba island from Hai Phong: (This timeable is updated as of Jan 2021)

There are plenty of hotels and hostels available on Cat Ba island. You will find most of them on the waterfront even though some hotels have recently opened a bit more inland. Generally, you pay a bit more for a room with sea view. When you’re less abled or not in great physical condition, make sure that you book a hotel with an elevator as a lot of hotels won’t have any. For a luxurious experience, you can go to ‘Blue Lagoon Cat Ba’ located left of the welcome gate.

Besides the obvious things to do on an island, going to the beach, visit some caves and going on a cruise , there are several other activities you can partake in. 

• You can visit ‘Monkey Island’ where Monkeys roam free. The monkeys on the island are long tailed macaques and are not endemic to the island. 
• Little over a mile north of town (2 kilometers) you can find the ‘Cannon Fort’. This fort was built in 1942 as a defense installation and is a popular spot to watch the sunset.

Activities: Yoga is quite a popular activity on the island and for those who enjoy lush green forests and visit to Viet Hai village is recommended. 

Being right by the sea (it’s an island), sea food is very popular on Cat Ba island. Some recommended restaurants are: ‘Phuong Nhung Restaurant’, ‘Lang Chai sea-food restaurant’, ‘Phương Phương Restaurant’ and for vegetarians the ‘Buddha Belly Restaurant’ comes recommended.

There are so many different things to do on Cat Ba island and most people spend around three days on the island. Below we made a three day itinerary which is, of course, just a suggestion.

• Visit the beach! Cat Ba has several beautiful beaches notably Cat Ba 1, 2 and 3. We suggest you go to Cat Ba 2 as it has the reputation of being the most beautiful one.
• If you forget your bathing suit, no worries, there are plenty of options to rent a bathing suit for the day. Once at the beach you can just relax and get your tan on in the sun, go for a swim or do some snorkeling . It’s recommended to get out of the water before 6.30 p.m. as the tide and current can become quite treacherous.
• After the beach, you can go to Cannon fort to admire the sunset. After sunset enjoy a well-earned dinner and perhaps even some drinks at the many restaurants and bars Cat Ba has to offer.
• Take a trip to the beautiful Lan Ha Bay to take in the wonderful scenery. Do a bit of kayaking to explore some of the areas that are inaccessible by boat. Be sure to stop by Monkey Island to see some of the Monkeys and do some snorkeling or just simply go for a nice refreshing swim.
• At night enjoy a fresh seafood dish called ‘Tu Hai’. It’s a highly nutritious dish which is not as popular as oysters or shrimp but still very delicious!
• Visit one of the oldest fishing villages in Vietnam, Cai Beo ancient fishing village!
• Here you’ll find many interesting sights and hear many intriguing stories about the fishing village. Make a stop at the village to meet the locals and see first-hand how they catch and subsequently prepare the fish.
• Another option would be to go to the Cat Ba National park. The park is known for its biodiversity and is a prime example of Eco-tourism. You could even visit the fishing village and Cat Ba National park on the same day!

At night you can enjoy some delicious seafood! Regional specialties like Blue Crab of Squid come highly recommended!

@Nanna, There is no cruise from Cat Ba Island to Hue. You can book a flight from one of 3 airports: Cat Bi Airport (Hai Phong) or Van Don Airport (Quang Ninh) or Noi Bai Airport (Hanoi) to get to Hue. Local bus is another option but it takes a long time and is not very recommended for foreigners due to the language barrier.

There are three beaches on Cat Ba Island which are named Cat Co 1, 2, and 3, located pretty near the central town. The beaches are blessed with golden sandy shores and turquoise-colored seawater and filled with tourist services from electric cars, food and drink to beachside activities. Water games are available at Cat Co 1 and 2.

During the summer holidays, the beaches can get pretty crowded so if you want to have the beaches all to yourself, come early in the morning. Cat Co 1 and 2 are also beaches where you can witness a magical natural phenomenon: bioluminescent plankton. About an hour after twilight, the beach of Cat Co 2 begins to sparkle with the blue tiny dots from the marine organisms lighting up as a mechanism of defense against predators. 

Trek Cat Ba National Park

Like Phu Quoc Island, Cat Ba Island also has a national park that offers great opportunities for trekking and hiking. Covers more than half of the island, Cat Ba National Park is at the heart of the UNESCO Cat Ba Archipelago Biosphere Reserve and is home to thousands of species including higher plants, terrestrial animals, birds, and more. Have a bowl of local noodle soup: Hai Phong is famous for rice noodle soup with crab meat. There are quite a number of sidewalk stalls and small restaurants open until late. Sitting down to dig in a steaming bowl after a short walk would be a wonderful experience to do in Cat Ba town at night.

If time doesn’t allow you to take a full trip to the two further bays, then a half-day or full-day trip to the nearby Lan Ha Bay will give enough satisfaction of being among nature and discover the fishing villages. The summertime in North Vietnam lasts from May to August. How to Get to Cat Ba from Hanoi

The island is accessible by boats only. You can come to Cat Ba from Hai Phong city and Halong Bay. From Hanoi which is about 100 kilometers away, you can come to Hai Phong by train or by buses.

From Hai Phong City

You can come to Cat Ba island center (Cat Ba town) by going to Hai Phong city, then go by speed boat or ferry from Ben Binh harbor to Cat Bai town.

There is a company called Hoang Long has daily buses from Luong Yen bus station in Hanoi to go package trip (bus and boat) to Cat Ba island town. If you come from Ho Chi Minh city, there is a flight to come to Hai Phong city and then you go by speed boat to Cat Ba town.

You can come to Cat Ba by going to Halong bay, then take a ferry at Tuan Chau island to reach Gia Luan harbor in Cat Ba island, then take a taxi to Cat Ba town in 30 minutes more. Your Guide to Cat Ba: All You Need to Know Before Going + Highlights

Cat ba is halong bay's more adventurous little sister. here's what you need to know before you visit.

Known as Halong Bay’s hidden gem, Cat Ba is the largest island on Halong Bay and has been growing in popularity recently. Despite this, it is still relatively unknown compared to Halong Bay and far less-touristy.

At Cat Ba, you can expect a myriad of fun-filled activities and a great spot for backpackers. Not to mention, Halong Bay’s twin, Lan Ha Bay is also right here, so you won’t miss out on the scenery! This is the spot to visit if you want a more secluded and untouched experience. To make your planning easier, we’ve compiled everything you need to know and make the best out of each highlight!

What kind of experience should I expect at Cat Ba?

Whether Cat Ba is the right place for you depends on what kind of experience you’re after - a luxurious, pampering one or a laid-back, off-the-beaten path experience. If it is the latter, then yes, Cat Ba is definitely worth a visit. If it is the former, you’re better off visiting Halong Bay, which we have a guide on here ! The activities at Cat Ba are more suited for backpackers, those who want something more exciting, hands on and to be surrounded by nature. So, if you’re someone full of energy and want a variety of activities, Cat Ba is the place for you.

Is it difficult to get to Cat Ba & how do I get there?

There are many ways for you to get from Hanoi to Cat Ba such as via motorbike or the train route but one of the fastest and most cost-efficient ways would be to take the bus + speedboat route.

If you choose to depart from Hanoi , most cruises offer return transport so it’ll be entirely fuss free. 

If you choose to depart from Cat Ba , you will most likely have to make your way to Cat Ba Island yourself.

• Transportation   There are many bus companies for you to choose from and you can book your tickets online, which would cost around $25 USD. This is the price for a round trip and you won’t have to worry as they will arrange end to end transport from Hanoi to Cat Ba Town. The bus ride takes approximately 2 hours from Hanoi’s Old Quarter to the port and from the port, it’s a 10min speed boat ride to Cat Ba Island. From here, you’ll take a 45 minutes bus ride to Cat Ba Town and arrive at the main area where all the hostels are located.
• *Bonus As you depart from the port and start sailing through the limestone cliffs, keep your eyes peeled for the Cat Ba Langur! We were incredibly lucky to have spotted two langurs just 10 mins out!

Cat Ba langurs are one of the rarest primates in the world and they live in this hidden gem - Cat Ba! They're critically endangered and it's estimated that there are less than 70 of them left in the world.  Poaching and tourists are two of their major threats. The noise from tourists scares them away from their natural habitat so we suggest that you keep the volume of music down so they don’t get too scared!  

Should I go for a 1-day or 2-days cruise? 

1-day: The most popular option, most Cat Ba cruises such as Cat Ba Vision consist of a 1 day boat trip which is ample time for you to sail through the beautiful islets of Lan Ha Bay, kayak through caves to hidden lagoons and go on treks. 

2-days : For those with more time and would like to spread out their activities, you can choose the 2 days option with Cat Ba Vision would allow you to chill on the island, enjoy bonding activities and even get a chance to see the bioluminescent plankton. 

For the 1 day option, you’ll visit these highlights:

Monkey island.

Probably one of the most visited highlights of Cat Ba, Monkey Island tends to be the first stop of many cruises. Hiking up to the summit is the most common activity as everyone wants a good panoramic view (and instagram picture) of the bay. Be warned that the hike up can be quite dangerous, we’re talking sharp rocks and steep steps so make sure you are physically fit and those with a fear of heights? Avoid this. If you make it up, the view will be well worth it as you’ll be greeted with Lan Ha Bay and its surrounding islets. Bonus would be it looks strikingly similar to Halong Bay, so you’re not missing out! 

Of course, you can expect to see monkeys here too, it is after all, called Monkey Island. The monkeys here are known to be quite mean and like to snatch items so make sure to keep your distance and do not carry food, we repeat, DO NOT CARRY FOOD. Other than the slightly annoying monkeys it’s a good place for those who enjoy hikes but you may have to squeeze with others on the hike up as this is quite a popular location.

Dark & Light Caves, Hidden Lagoons

This is an interesting one where you’ll get to kayak through a two in one cave system and discover hidden lagoons. Even though the caves itself may not be that impressive and there isn’t much to see inside, the experience of kayaking through is quite fun, especially if you’re with your friends. Over here, we suggest that you pay attention to your guide’s lead as they’ll be able to point you to the REALLY discreet caves that you probably will miss on your own. Plus you’ll be happy to know because Cat Ba is lesser known, you won’t have the issue of bumping into other kayaks (what’s the point of kayaking if you keep bumping into others?).

Floating Fishing Villages

As you cruise through the fishing villages nearby, you’ll find that it's not just the scenery of floating houses that is interesting, but seeing the way of living the locals have adopted is quite an eye-opening experience. Probably because we mostly come from cities, skyscrapers and are always bombarded with technology. Get real close to these floating villages and see how they lead their daily lives, from fishing to hauling up a catch, this will give you a slice of how real Vietnamese life is like. In addition, you’ll most likely learn about many traditions and beliefs unique to the locals (such as keeping fish for good luck!) from your guide so keep your ears peeled!

Hospital Cave

For all you history lovers, don’t miss this cave. Originally used in the Vietnam War as a haven for the Vietnamese Army, this bomb proof safe house and hospital is a popular tourist attraction today. If nobody told you there was this cave here, you’d probably miss it because the secret location is precisely what makes it perfect for a hideout. And if you’re expecting to see stalactites here, you will be disappointed. Instead, there are bunk rooms and hospital beds which give you an insight on the Vietnamese War. This cave visit will probably be shorter than you expect (about 30mins) so we feel it’s worth squeezing in a visit. After all, it’s not everyday you’ll get to see a hospital built in a cave.

One of our favourite activities, jumping into the water! Cool and clear, the water is a great way for you to cool down after a day of touring in the humidity. It’s quite a common sight to see and definitely a fun way to round up your trip. Don’t forget to bring an extra set of clothes!

Tip: For a more adventure-filled 1-day trip: opt for itineraries that allow you to cycle through villages, and even rock climb !

Cycling and rock climbing are other excursions you can do around Cat Ba, suitable for those seeking to see another side of the island that fewer travellers see. There are many bike routes to choose from in Cat Ba such as the coastal route or national garden route. It totally depends on what you would like to see. As for rock climbing, if you’re a beginner, don’t worry because they cater to all levels, no matter if you’re just starting out or an expert climber!

For the 2 days option, this is the additional highlight you’ll enjoy:

If you have more time, we highly recommend spending a night on a floating homestay and seeing bioluminescent plankton ! This is the main highlight of 2 days Cat Ba cruises. 

Known as ‘tears of the ocean’ or ‘sea of stars’, the neon-glowing waves are the result of a magical natural phenomenon - bioluminescent plankton. They can be seen around the world, particularly in Maldives, but you can see them in Cat Ba as well! The bioluminescent plankton only glow if there’s movement in the water, meaning that you’ll be able to night kayak and watch the water sparkle a magical blue.

Now that you have a better idea of what to expect, you might be wondering when is the best time to visit? 

Overall, Cat Ba Island’s weather is quite favourable which is why it’s so ideal for outdoor activities such as kayaking, rock climbing and hiking. When you choose to go depends on your focus and preference for your trip. 

June to August : If you enjoy the sun and tropical heat, this is the period you should choose as temperatures can go up to 30 degrees. Make sure to bring along sunscreen and an umbrella because this is also the rainy season!

October to March: Relatively mild weather of about 20-26 degrees, you can choose this period if you want to avoid the blazing sun and rainfall. 

Best months to visit would be March , April , September and October where there is lesser rainfall and a more forgiving temperature.

Important things to note:

• For those with dietary requirements such as if you are vegetarian, don’t worry as the cruises will be able to cater to your requirements as long as you request! 
• If you are planning to hike or cycle, we recommend that you wear comfortable footwear and clothing.

8:30 The trip starts! Our captain steers the cruise slowly, and the poetic scenery of Cai Beo ancient fishing village constantly appears with floating houses lying along the mountainside. You will be surprised at the peaceful beauty of this 7,000-year-old village.

9:30: After weaving through hundreds of large and small rocky islands, the cruise will stop at a floating house. Next, you will row your KAYAK across the cave Tai Kéo to see the vivid scenery of the underwater world.

If the tide is too high (the water level rises up to the cave entrance), for your safety, kayaking outside of the cave only.

10:45: After enjoying the kayaking activity, our Captain and Tour Guide will choose the best stop for the group to experience a special swimming activity in the middle of the sea and play with the inflatable pool provided for free on the Serenity Premium Cruises.

For those guests who do not wish to participate in this activity, they can use the CHECK-IN WITH SUP service provided by the staff for free.

(We highly recommend that you wear a life jacket when swimming outside the inflatable pool to ensure a safe journey.)

After lunch, the cruise sails to Viet Hai Port. Disembark and head to the pier, where electric cars will transport you to the ancient Viet Hai Village.

You can choose to swim anywhere in Lan Ha (better with local security/instructor), while you can not do that in Bai Tu Long. You can swim in an allowed area in Ha Long Bay only.

Chuong Islet is also known as But (Pen), Nen (Candle), Bap Chuoi (Banana flower spike). You can see it on the way from the town of Cat Ba to Cua Van fishing village.

6. Dark and Bright Cave  (apply October to April)

The Dark Cave is the long and dark one, which will require a torch to be handed to visitors beforehand. In contrast, the Bright Cave is short, and you can see the other bright side from this side.

Exploring Dark and Bright Cave, the best way is kayaking and swimming through the tunnel.

While the Bright Cave is always available, the Dark Cave can be swallowed by the tide and difficult to pass through.

Surely, you will be surprised by the amazing limestone islets and mountains in this area.

There Benjamin fig trees shade the landscape and many orchids hang their sweet-scented flowers. In the lake, many species abound shrimp, fish, crab, and cuttlefish.

Inside the grotto, the lake is surrounded by mountains. On the cliff, one still finds traces of fossils of fresh-water snails, which prove that men used to live there and this must have been a deep valley then.

The beauty of the Dark and Bright cave is the mingling of a number of factors: the mountain’s size and form, the color of the water, and the clouds.

Viet Hai village Cat Ba is a small village located far away in Cat Ba National Park, Hai Phong. Viet Hai village is a community ecotourism destination, suitable for travelers who love exploration.

Cat Ba 1 Day Tour is one of our group tours we run with our local partner in Cat Ba Island. The multi-sport trip starts in Cat Ba island, taking you to Lan Ha bay where you enjoy rock climbing, cruising and kayaking. The tour starts at 8.00 am and finishes at 17.00.

Cat Ba 1 Day Itinerary

8.00 AM: Depart Asia Outdoors shop. Drive to the Harbor to embark our daily boat.

Cast off into Lan Ha Bay, the less traveled, less touristy, and astoundingly beautiful southern portion of Ha Long Bay. After cruising through a maze of karst towers, we will collect your kayaks from a floating fishing house, and drop anchor in a tranquil cluster of islands. You will be able to kayak throughout the bay into hidden lagoons, explore a deserted beach, or simply relax on the boat with a good book and a drink. Our no-forced-itinerary policy allows you to choose your own adventure.

The scenery will no doubt leave you hungry for more…or at least hungry for food! We’ll set you up with a freshly cooked Vietnamese lunch on our comfortable boat.

After lunch you’ll land on the secluded and uninhabited Moody Beach, where seawater caresses two shorelines beneath a massive limestone cliff. After a brief introduction, our experienced guides will outfit you with safe and comfortable UIAA standard climbing harnesses, shoes, and helmets. With the coaching of our guides, climb as high as you like over the emerald waters of Lan Ha Bay.

On a clear day, your cruise home will include a majestic sunset over the islands.

Our tour guides speak English or French. They hold a university degree in tourism and national license as a guide. If you wish to send a tour leader along with any group, he or she can fully rely on the knowledge and experience of our local guides.

Remote treks are always accompanied by a local representative to deal with permits and authorities and manage the porter team. They speak the local dialects, know the cultural traditions and give tips on suggested behavior in fragile ecological areas and tribal communities. For some itineraries, the role of tour leader and representative is combined.

Our drivers don’t speak English. It’s possible that a few of them might know some basic words, such as telling time, stop, and lunch. If you’re looking for effective communication throughout the journey, we highly recommend booking a tour guide.

Trip routes

Principally, Lotussia Travel requires all the trip associates to know the destinations well by any means of traveling or enquiry to the local suppliers to figure out all the relative details of any trip. For adventure tours such as jungle trekking, mountain hiking, sea kayaking, river rafting or biking, cycling tours, Lotussia Travel will never add any new routes into available schedule until survey or pre-view it.

Accommodation

Lotussia Travel carefully choose all the hotels, guest-houses or home-stays based on service quality, location, and characteristics, doing best to make the accommodations in the remote small places as comfortable as possible. Please bear in mind that hotels in Vietnam might not be in the same standard in other country. Generally hotels in major cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh city, Hoian, Hue…are much better than hotels and guest-houses in mountainous areas.

Lotussia Travel take dinning as an indispensable experience to clients since it is an important part in Vietnamese culture. Therefore, Lotussia Travel will not intend take clients to the most expensive restaurants but non-touristy local ones which offer delicious, local food, with nice or interesting atmosphere. The restaurants might be simple in the country but LOTUSSIA Travel guarantee is sanitary and cleanliness. Or even on our trek, we encourage our cook offer client food with new tastes from day to day. During adventure itineraries to mountainous or remote areas, there is sometimes no choice for hotel and restaurants. We will try our best to bring you the best taste of local food.

As the tap water in Vietnam is undrinkable, Lotussia Travel recommend clients to drink bottled water throughout your trip, or boiled water on treks. Lotussia Travel offers bottle water all the day, and soft drinks like Cola, Sprite or Vietnamese Tea or if possible juice in restaurants (if mentionned in itinerary). This is not automatically included in the packages. In simple restaurant or on camping, Lotussia Travel offers boiled water, instant coffee or juice, wrapped milk (Details are confirmed in bottom of your itinerary).

Transportation

In most destinations of Vietnam, all the roads are well paved though the traffic is quite messed up like in Hanoi, Hai Phong… We use proper vehicles, car, minibus or coach in good condition based on the size of the groups. We use 4WD only on the rough road where the other vehicles could not pass through or based on clients requirement on overland journeys or treks. For cycling itineraries, we usually use our support minibus or minibus with support truck. For sea kayaking, river rafting trips, diving packages we use standard boat as support. Detailed information is provided on our service proposal.

We use drivers who are native or local of each travel destination and maintain good safety records for all trips. Most of our drivers can speak English but a little bit. This is just enough to understand basic words such as “time of departure”, “stop”, “restaurants”, “hotels”…If you want to learn more about Vietnamese culture and information about sightseeing sites, booking a tour guide is highly recommended.
