Sable at Navy Pier Chicago Sable Suite overlooking the water

Sable at Navy Pier Chicago, Curio Collection by Hilton Arrow

Named for a ship stationed at Navy Pier during World War II, the Sable has the most enviable tourist location, anchored on the far end of the 3,300-foot-long pier looking back at the city skyline. The glass exterior brings the outside into the building, and cleverly quotes nautical design. Taking their cue from Lake Michigan, the hotel’s 223 rooms channel the Great Lake in a marine blue and whitecap color scheme with pale driftwood and sand tones in furniture and fixtures. Brass accents and curved lines channel classic ship design, and floor-to-ceiling windows flood the rooms with light. Navy Pier has not traditionally been a foodie destination, but the hotel upgrades your choices beginning with Lirica, the ground floor restaurant that spills out onto the pier, serving pan-Latin surf and turf in dishes like Mexican shrimp cocktail and Argentine beef empanadas. Spread over a whopping 20,000 square feet, the rooftop Offshore is a scenic spot for a cocktail—including frozen offerings—complimented by a covers-all-bases menu running from tuna tartare and raw oysters to burgers and ribs.

Pendry Chicago is among the top hotels in Chicago Readers' Choice Awards 2023

Pendry Chicago Arrow

The office-centric stretch of Michigan Avenue south of the Chicago River got an instant upgrade in Pendry Chicago, both rejuvenating a 1929 architectural icon—purportedly designed in the shape of a champagne bottle in the heady pre-Crash era—and living up to its gilded interiors with social aspects that channel a sense of celebration, from the bustling ground-floor brasserie to the absinthe-inspired, botanical driven rooftop bar peer with skyline icons. On the edge of the Loop, Pendry Chicago’s locale is hard to beat, whether you’re doing business or seeing the sights. The Riverwalk and Millennium Park are both just a block or two away, and the Art Institute of Chicago just a bit farther. Explore the parks with one of the loaner bikes stabled at the hotel (just don’t try this in the traffic-jammed Loop itself).

Bar dark room fireplace Graduate Evanston Chicago

Graduate Evanston Arrow

What do Zooey Deschanel, Meghan Markle, and Eddie Vedder have in common? Besides fame, they all attended Northwestern University in Evanston and are enshrined in caricature among 16 well-known alumni in the gallery at the Graduate. Occupying the 1928 Colonial Revival apartment-hotel The Homestead, the 119-room newcomer nods to the Wildcats throughout in flashes of purple (purple and white are the school’s colors) but keeps the tone professorial-friendly, with tweedy couches, groupings of flea market art, Persian-inspired rugs, and chess tables. Expect mobs of families and well-heeled alums on Big Ten football days. The hotel is also home to The Graduate Homestead Room, a cozy lounge and restaurant offering seasonal dishes and hand-crafted cocktails inspired by Chicago’s beloved John Hughes.

Nobu Hotel Chicago Zen Deluxe

Nobu Hotel Chicago Arrow

From the oshibori ritual of handing guests a warm, scented hand towel upon arrival to the indoor tranquility pool, Nobu Chicago acts as a serene refuge from the city beyond its tinted-glass facade. Not that it’s entirely retiring; the signature restaurant packs in the city’s sushi cognoscenti as well as splurging celebrants. Part of a string of hotels from the namesake chef Nobu Matsuhisa and partners including actor Robert De Niro, Nobu has particular appeal to foodies who will find the surrounding Fulton Market area teeming with acclaimed restaurants, including Au Cheval , Momotaro , Girl & the Goat , and Monteverde. This is young creatives central, with employers such as Google in the ‘hood, and the CTA Green and Pink L lines offer easy access to downtown attractions just east of the area.

Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile Arrow

Centrally located in the heart of Chicago’s vibrant Gold Coast Historic District, the 415-room Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile draws inspiration from the French art de vivre to offer a memorable, sophisticated hotel experience. The property offers 63 suites, three stylish restaurants, ample meeting and event space, and a 24-hour fitness center.

The RobeyCabana skyline

The Robey Arrow

Taking up residence in Northwest Tower, The Robey jostles alongside artisanal coffee shops, independent boutiques, and pop-up restaurants in Chicago’s creative corner between the hipster neighborhoods of Bucktown and Wicker Park. Of the 89 rooms, the best are the corner suites, where wraparound windows shed natural light onto low-key, unfussy interiors by Belgium’s Nicolas Schuybroek and Marc Merckx. The real head-turners, though, are the collection of bars and restaurants, not least the curbside Café Robey, which hums from the first plate of eggs and hash browns in the morning. Clever Coyote, on the second floor, is a 90s-inspired hang (complete with vintage Nintendo consoles and grunge tracks) and the Up Room, the 13th-floor rooftop bar, serves as a sleek space with sprawling cityscape views. Come summer, the only place to be is on the sixth-floor outdoor pool terrace, the Cabana Club, with a basil gimlet in hand.

The Peninsula Chicago Arrow

This high-rise hotel might be home to the city’s best-kept secret: a sprawling, 80-foot pool some 19 floors up, with floor-to-ceiling windows and a view you can’t peel your eyes from. You could easily spend all day there in unperturbed bliss—block off a whole day to alternate between spa treatments and dips in the pool. Fortunately, there’s plenty of relaxing to be done in the guest rooms, many of which are more spacious than a Chicago apartment. You know a hotel is at the top of its game when the towels are so plush they feel as though they were woven on-site and there are neatly labeled amenity drawers so you don’t have to pry each one open to find what you’re looking for. Peninsula hotels are known for their intuitive technology (in-room tablets let you control the lights, request housekeeping, and check your flight status). If you’re in need of a good night’s sleep, spend a night at a Peninsula hotel.

Viceroy Hotel interior bedroom Chicago

Viceroy Chicago Arrow

Set in the Gold Coast Historical District, the contemporary-chic Viceroy has a retro Chicago façade and mid-century furnishings within. Textures and patterns grab the eye, including an abstract headboard wall, a carpet that looks like a sand-hued topographic map, and—yes—quotes from Marcel Proust, reproduced on the lobby's 30-foot wall. You'll love the Southwestern–style throw pillows and the teal curtains, which inspire tranquility at night, while the Nespresso machine serves a valued purpose in the morning. Don’t skip their onsite restaurant, Somerset, which serves seasonal American fare and classic cocktails like the Gold Rush and State (aptly named for the hotel’s location, with bourbon, Amaro Montenegro, and honey.

Kimpton Gray Hotel chicago Lobby Lounge

Kimpton Gray Hotel Arrow

Part of the fun and funky Kimpton family, the Kimpton Gray Hotel in the Loop has great value for style and location. Sleek platform beds and pendant lamps suggest mid-century modern, but the dark wooden armoire with the floral interior speak to a wilder streak. Upgrade to a Spa room, if you can, where the shower room—complete with a freestanding tub—is glassed-in and tiled in abstract designs. Outstanding bars here for whatever mood you're in. The lobby bar Vol. 39 has the leathery look and bookshelves of a law office given a romantic makeover, with low seating and flickering votives. On the top floor, hit Boleo when feeling high-energy (it has a nightclub vibe, but the Latin food is very good).

The Hoxton Chicago

The Hoxton, Chicago Arrow

Opened in March 2019, The Hoxton, Chicago marks lucky number seven for the London-based hotel group. The building's gruff, brick warehouse–inspired exterior belies its warm and spacious living room–like lobby. Immediately upon entry, you're greeted by potted greenery, communal tables, and ample seating under a lofty, two-story ceiling. Rooms come in three sizes: Snug, Cosy, and Roomy. All feature design elements fashioned by local artists, including the whimsical bedspreads. Furnishings are minimal; a single padded chair sits beside an end table with a retro-styled iPhone speaker. Chef Stephanie Izard of local Girl & the Goat fame runs the rooftop Peruvian hotspot Cabra. Don’t miss the basement jazz den Lazy Bird.

Sophy Hyde Park Chicago

Sophy Hyde Park Arrow

The University of Chicago, anchor of Hyde Park , serves as inspiration for the Sophy, a 98-room gem on the community’s lively commercial strip, walking distance to campus, the Museum of Science and Industry and, sometime in the next few years, the Obama Presidential Center, now being built in nearby Jackson Park. The 44th president was a community organizer and teacher in the university law school before ascending to the highest office, and his presence, along with the other renowned Nobel laureates and MacArthur geniuses nurtured at the UC, are celebrated at Sophy. The hotel is hugely popular with UC prospects and their families touring the campus. Sophy’s large, light-filled suites are there for them with generous bathrooms and separate living areas with sleeper sofas.

The Langham Chicago

The Langham, Chicago Arrow

A highlight of any Chicago riverboat architecture tour is Mies van der Rohe’s last skyscraper—330 North Wabash, still commonly referred to as the IBM Building. It’s a paragon of the late International Style: a 52-story rectangle of anodized aluminum and bronze glass that is the perfect distillation of corporate might and urban promise. To check into the Langham Chicago, which has occupied the building’s first 13 floors since 2013, is to step into the story the building tells about the American city. You feel like you could be a character in a spy thriller as you pass through the note-perfect midcentury lobby and take the elevator to the elegant second-floor reception area. Everywhere you go, there are encounters to be had with the City of the Century: You’ll ponder the curious curlicues of Marina City, the iconic “corncob” apartment towers next door, over a bowl of scallop ceviche in Travelle, the handsomely brassy New American restaurant, and admire the bold way North Wabash slices diagonally through the urban jungle from the cream-and-taupe comfort of your vast guest room. For the traveler, it’s Chicago’s finest address.

RitzCarlton Chicago Hotel Interior Lobby

The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago Arrow

With a Magnificent Mile location, loads of amenities, and access to food and drink options that draw in the locals as much as guests, the Ritz-Carlton feels plugged in while still offering a welcoming home base. The lobby is energized by a glass-roofed café area that serves as a coffee shop by day and a special drinks spot by night—with views of the city lights. There's also an Italian restaurant with a handsome bar and, in summer, a rooftop lounge that looks up to 875 N. Michigan Avenue (formerly the John Hancock Building) next door. It's a great location for exploring the city and a cosseting base to retreat to when exhausted.

The Blackstone, Autograph Collection Arrow

Teddy Roosevelt and Al Capone were once guests at this historic "Hotel of Presidents" facing Grant Park . Step inside, though, for a more contemporary story that starts in the color-punched lobby with its palatial, coffered ceilings. Book the shiny pop-up hutch bar for a private event in the lobby, or stroll over to the adjacent, Catalan-driven Mercat a la Planxa for tapas. Whatever you do, look up: The Blackstone also features more than 1,600 original artworks, largely by Chicago artists.

Hotel Zachary Chicago

Hotel Zachary Chicago, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel Arrow

A roster complement to Wrigley Field across the street, Hotel Zachary manages to keep the baseball references in bounds and juice the fun with a buzzy reimagined bar and lounge experience with terrace seating. Though the hotel takes its name from Zachary Taylor Davis, the architect who designed Wrigley Field in 1914, its focus remains on vintage style rather than overt references to baseball. Nice touches include a mural of the original stadium done in tile and street lamps lighting the lobby. The hotel building is filled with bars and restaurants from popular local operators, making it a social hive even on non-game days. Nestled inside Hotel Zachary on the second floor, Alma, the newly reinvented bar and lounge, features a magnificent bar summoning guests from the open lobby area and welcoming them into a modern living room. The Alma Terrace offers prime access to balcony seating overlooking the stadium, while the more low-key Den area adjacent has a pool table next to the fireplace. Nearby neighborhoods including Boystown make the Zachary a good base for exploring the North Side of the city.

Four Seasons Hotel Chicago Arrow

Tranquil and refined, the Four Seasons towers over Lake Michigan. The residential-style rooms make you feel like the most luxe of locals, as does the concierge, who are so skilled and accommodating that they may even be able to score those coveted Bears tickets. On floors 30 to 46, rooms have stellar skyline views and suites have doors that separate living from sleeping quarters, but even the smallest rooms have a residential feel with armchairs, matching ottomans, and circular dining tables. Dinner at Adorn is a must, and come summer, the hotel has a private 52-ft yacht experience for guests to experience the beauty of Lake Michigan and the buzz of the Chicago River by boat.

Longman Eagle

Longman & Eagle Arrow

A hipster crash pad above one of Logan Square's buzziest restaurants, Longman & Eagle is full of rough-hewn elements like exposed brick and wood-plank walls. Many of the six rooms come with vintage tape decks and homemade mixed tapes. There's a great selection of dog-eared books to peruse, often by local authors or about local subjects. Organic touches like hanging terrariums make it feel like your starter apartment in the city. Guests get wooden chips to trade in for liquor at the whiskey-centric bar. The restaurant below, Longman & Eagle, is a dining must in a neighborhood filled with excellent competitors. But make a reservation; it's not easy to get in.

Virgin Hotels Chicago

Virgin Hotels Chicago Arrow

Virgin Hotels' Chicago outpost is all about contrasts: It's buzzy in public and serene in private, and cheeky accents and a cherry-red color scheme contrast with the stately old bank building it calls home. At once clubby and retreat-like, there are loads of dining and drinking options: the ground-level Italian scratch kitchen Miss Ricky's, the rooftop bar and lounge, Cerise, which has great views of the city from its seasonal patio, the coffee shop, Two Zero Three, perfect for grabbing a flaky pastry or caffeinated beverage, and Upstairs, the hotel’s swanky speakeasy which is open on select nights for curated events and entertainment. Their rooms, affectionately referred to as chambers, included so many small and charming surprises: a wool-upholstered wall with pockets for things like the TV remote, the cherry-red Smeg fridge, yoga mat, and minibar selections that, thankfully, don't come with exorbitant price tags. Pet-friendly rooms, meanwhile, come with a porcelain dog stationed in the hallway at the front door.

Chicago Athletic Association Hotel

Chicago Athletic Association Arrow

They don't build them like this anymore. The Venetian Gothic exterior gives way to 19th-century interiors, complete with carved stone fireplaces, terrazzo floors, and leaded glass—all freshly restored. Rooms vary in dimension widely, with the most spacious overlooking Millennium Park. Brass-bed-inspired headboards and Faribault Woolen Mill Company blankets make even the bed a bit retro, though still cozy by modern sleep standards. The Chicago Athletic Association has a strong local following for its historic lobby, indoor entertaining with Topgolf Swing Suites, foosball in its game room, historic basketball court, the gem-like Milk Room bar, and the clubby Cherry Circle Room restaurant. On the rooftop, and mostly enclosed by an atrium, Cindy's cranks it up with stunning cocktails, seasonal dishes and fresh seafood, and a year-round terrace with some of the best views over Millennium Park. Come for the design, and stay for the location and amenities.

United States Illinois Chicago Hotel Hotel Lincoln

Hotel Lincoln, JdV by Hyatt Arrow

The funky Hotel Lincoln has a relaxed vibe befitting its locale next to Lincoln Park and the Lincoln Park Zoo, it's also within walking distance to Second City improv shows and North Avenue Beach. The designers went mad at flea markets, and festoon the walls with mismatched art, and the desk is made up of dresser drawers. Come here with an appetite: The hotel houses multiple restaurants, including Sushi Suite 202, an in-suite omakase experience featuring 17+ courses of choice nigiri, and Sushi by Bou, a popular spot for omakase, Japanese beers, and thoughtful selections in their Whiskey Library.

The Talbott Arrow

Hidden in plain sight, the Talbott is discretion embodied, just steps off Michigan Avenue's bustling Magnificent Mile. Rooms are unfussy but inviting, and the intimate lobby lounge makes for a great escape from the crowds. Notable luxuries include plush bathrobes and amenities by C.O. Bigelow. The intimate lobby lounge is a great place for that first cocktail of the evening. Its restaurant Talbott Cucina is open all day long, with a crowd-pleasing American-meets-Mediterranean menu and specialty cocktails—best savored on the popular curbside patio.

LondonHouse Chicago Curio Collection by Hilton

LondonHouse Chicago, Curio Collection by Hilton Arrow

Set in a landmark building where the Magnificent Mile meets the Chicago River, LondonHouse embodies the definition of a luxury lifestyle hotel. The gold coffered ceiling of the ground floor lobby makes a stunning first impression, but the best rooms—the Vista rooms—are in a glass addition featuring floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the river and the bridges that vault over it. Dark wood paneling and framed black-and-white photos lend a slightly masculine tone. There's a restaurant on the 21st floor, and a rooftop bar just one more story up—its crown jewel being the Cupola and its 360 degree views (a favorite property site for photos).

Park Hyatt Chicago Arrow

Overlooking the historic Water Tower in the heart of the Magnificent Mile, this luxury hotel has gained a loyal following of celebrities, A-lister locals, and well-heeled travelers over the years for its luxe design and detailed, warm hospitality. The hotel unveiled a $60 million renovation last year, adding 23 new suites, refreshing their dining spaces, and debuting their own art gallery. The hotel’s newly designed suites feature details like an open-air terrace, oversized living space, spa-inspired rain showers, and epic views (book the Dusable or Lake Michigan Suite for lake vistas). Reimagined guest rooms, replete in layered textures and camel tones, carry updated elements throughout, as well. Guests can use the integrated media hub and its advanced tablet system for requests and in-room dining—all a preamble to some evening R&R (complete with Le Labo bath products and an oversized soaking tub). On the wellness front, book the Wellbeing or Mindfulness Suite, which are outfitted with sound machines and (in the Wellbeing Suite) fitness equipment.

Waldorf Astoria Chicago Hotel

Waldorf Astoria Chicago Arrow

You'll feel instantly transported to a French chateau upon arrival to this Gold Coast retreat with all of the comforts of a luxury hotel with a personalized, boutique feel. A sleek charm and upscale amenities (most of the rooms have fireplaces and terraces) evoke a fairytale kind of feel year-round. Dedicated service, alongside a notable spa, restaurant, and cocktail lounge, all draw an array of travelers checking in for an elevated escape, from families to couples seeking romantic retreat. For sunset views over Chicago neighborhoods, opt for a West-facing room, while those jonesing for Lake Michigan views will do well with a room facing North or East. And if you’re looking to experience the property in big ways, consider one of their six residential suites, each boasting a fireplace, marble bathroom, and floor-to-ceiling windows.

St. Regis Chicago Arrow

Chicago (and, let’s be honest, the world) has been waiting for this undulating tower by Jeanne Gang—the tallest building in the world by a female architect—to open for years, and the wait was worth it: Glorious city, lake, and river views, a stellar hotel gym, two restaurants, a world-class spa with an indoor pool and outdoor terrace, and a butler for every room (even in the entry-level category), all set in an easily accessible corner of downtown conspire to truly raise the bar on what a city boutique hotel can be. Bring your workout clothes. The roughly 12,000-square-foot Athletic Club is free to guests and has every brand and type of machine you love. There are also three group fitness rooms and a set schedule of classes, from yoga to mat Pilates. Sweat it out, then jump in the pool.

Soho House Hotel Restaurant The Allis Chicago

Soho House Chicago Arrow

You wish your apartment looked like these rooms: exposed-brick-walled loft spaces with high ceilings, wood floors, oriental rugs, armchairs you can sink into, and big windows with views. This buzzy destination is as popular with locals as with travelers, thanks to its status as part of the Soho House social club. While the general public can visit the ground floor restaurants and bars, the entire "House" includes a vast private lounge; the circular Club Bar, a tricked-out gym with a full boxing ring; and a rooftop pool with an attached restaurant accessible to members and hotel guests only. But entry-level rooms are super reasonable, given the access to resort-style amenities.

This 2022-opened FiDi hotel features touches of luxury and a clubhouse feel throughout, thanks to intimate environs, detailed design, and welcoming hospitality. Comprising three floors of a historically notable building (the last one designed by acclaimed Chicago architect Daniel Burnham), it serves as a tranquil escape from downtown Chicago. Designed by DiLeonardo International and Chipman Design Architecture, the hotel’s 232 luxury suites and rooms take inspiration from the building’s historic past, while reflecting sophisticated, modern-day touches; gold finishes, jewel-toned furnishings, and classic stone elements meet to create a sleek, lounge-worthy space. Grill on 21 serves as the hotel’s main gathering spot, offering contemporary steakhouse fare in a welcoming space that’s one of the busiest rooms in the neighborhood during lunch hours when the executives and attorneys descend for mid-day wedge salads and steak frites. Come evening, start with a drink at the bar (popular in its own right for an impressive libations list) and settle in at a booth for creative, comforting plates like hearth-roasted carrot wellington and lobster pot pie, plus views of the open kitchen.

With its world-class cultural institutions (the Art institute of Chicago and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra among them), 24 sand beaches right in the city, and a richly diverse population, Chicago remains one of the United States’ most visited metropolises. The Midwestern city drew nearly 49 million visitors in 2022—about 80 percent of prepandemic numbers—and in recent years, the hotel scene has heated up, too, with both newcomers and reimagined classics.

As part of our Hotels We Love series of the world’s best hotels, we’ve selected the finest places to stay in the Windy City. Whether you’re seeking an uber-luxe escape, a hipster hangout, or an architectural gem with killer views, you’ll find it on this curated list of Chicago’s 15 best hotels.

  • Neighborhood: The Loop
  • Why we love it: The best games room in town, plus a retro, clubby vibe in a lobby lit by fireplaces
  • Loyalty program: World of Hyatt

Set directly across from the Art Institute of Chicago, this former members-only men’s gymnasium is now the Chicago Athletic Association , which is part of Hyatt’s Unbound Collection. Enter at street level off Michigan Avenue and walk toward the back to find a staircase that leads to the old swimming pool, now a venue for parties and pop-up concepts. Take the nearby elevator to the newly renovated restaurant, Cindy’s, easily the best rooftop scene in the city, with highly Instagrammable terrace views overlooking Millennium Park, the swooping Frank Gehry–designed bandshell, and Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate (aka the Bean).

Park yourself in the second-floor lobby and hang with locals as they tap away on their laptops and sip lattes by the two oversize fireplaces. Walk through that expansive by Roman & Williams–designed room, where light beams in through ornate stained-glass windows, and you enter a warren of table games and darts, all festive and typically open to the public. There’s also the secret six-seat bar, the Milk Room, a relic of Prohibition, and the James Beard Award–winning Cherry Circle Room—a sexy, dark restaurant with a circulating martini cart and a meat-centric menu.

Upstairs in the 1893 landmark, 240 guest rooms reflect the building’s former life, with gym horses as foot beds, working fireplaces in some rooms, plasterwork ceilings, ornate carved wood wainscotting, and a clubby vibe. Some of the rooms are rather small, but the location is hard to beat, and the cozy, wintry ambience makes it a popular (and fun) place to spend a weekend. And because the CAA keeps an eye on its water conservation, sources its food locally, and adheres to strict recycling standards, eco-conscious travelers can feel good sleeping here. From $495

Four Seasons Hotel Chicago

  • Neighborhood: Magnificent Mile
  • Why we love it: A newly renovated local hot spot, with sumptuous rooms (and views) to match

A recent makeover of the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago from Houston-based Rottet Studio did away with the dark and clubby vibe common in older Chicago hotels in favor of a brighter natural palette. Today, the lobby is open and bedecked in oversize floral arrangements; the open-plan lounge there, with its modern glass chandelier, has become a high-end local watering hole known as the Social Bar. The beloved Adorn restaurant is now a big-night-out dining destination courtesy of chef Richie Farina’s creations that range from a perfectly prepared filet mignon to caviar and eggs. Upstairs, the 345 guest rooms—more than half are suites—feature understated grays and pale greens and come with deep soaking tubs and (if you ask) unimpeded views of Lake Michigan.

The newly redesigned spa opened in summer 2023, with a city-view lap pool and the Augustinus Bader Method treatment exclusive to the hotel to make your skin forget winter ever happened (though the 111Skin Black Diamond Facial delivers dramatic and immediate results, as well). From June through September, the hotel offers private yacht trips on the lake so you can soak in the magnificent skyline from a distance, then return to slumber in the heart of it all. From $700

Hoxton Hotel

  • Neighborhood: West Loop/Fulton Market
  • Why we love it: A lobby full of locals, a rooftop restaurant, and a killer location for working hipsters
  • Loyalty program: Dis-loyalty

There are a handful of appealing options in the West Loop, but the most exciting is the Hoxton Chicago , whose laid-back lobby is filled daily with locals and guests working, meeting, dining, drinking, or hanging out with a coffee. Part of the socially focused Hoxton hotel group that launched in London’s East End in 2006, this 182-room hotel has become the West Loop’s top rendezvous spot for meetings (unless you’re a member of nearby Soho House), but upstairs is just as enticing. We love “Flexy Time,” which allows guests to check in and out whatever time of day they like, so long as they book directly through the hotel website.

Rooms come in categories such as Snug or Roomy (with ADA-compliant options in every category), all inspired by the area’s industrial past with warehouse-style windows, concrete ceilings, leather headboards, and bronze details. Lazy Bird and Cira are on the ground floor and spill into the lobby, but it’s worth reserving a spot at Cabra, the Peruvian rooftop restaurant run by local celebrity chef Stephanie Izard. An adjacent pool turned the Hoxton into a summertime destination that makes many visitors forget they are in the heart of a major city. From $359

  • Why we love it: Reading nooks carved out of window spaces give most rooms an extra place to cozy up to stellar views

The Lotte brand is well-loved in its native country of Korea, but it’s less known in the States. (If you’ve been lucky enough to stay at the Palace Hotel in New York, you know the vibe.) The company recently spun off a younger, cooler sister brand, called L7, which places guests in the best neighborhoods of Seoul—and now, Chicago. The first Stateside L7 opens in May in Chicago, right across from the river and smack dab on the Mag Mile.

Catering to the creative class, the 191 AvroKo-designed rooms and suites come with Frette linens, Nespresso machines, and a subtle industrial aesthetic that feels just right in this busy part of town. Try to score a room with a reading nook carved out of the window. Facing north or west, you get the river and skyline views; east catches a glimpse of Lake Michigan. In-room dining comes courtesy of Perilla, a Korean take on the classic American steak house, but secure a table at least one night in the double-height restaurant and tuck into a killer slab of beef. After-dinner walks across the Wabash bridge are de rigueur. From $197

The Langham Chicago

  • Why we love it: An architectural masterpiece above the Chicago River
  • Loyalty program: Brilliant by Langham

Chicago invented the skyscraper, and some of the world’s most elegant examples define the city’s skyline. You can stay in the coolest one of them all, designed by German American architect Mies van der Rohe and run by Langham Hotels. To access the Langham Chicago’s minimalist-yet-opulent 268 guest rooms (including 48 suites), you must first check in at the second-floor lobby; its ceiling is hung with silver pebbles, its sofas populated by stylish guests, and its David Rockwell–designed Travelle restaurant alive with music and bites by executive chef Damion Henry during coveted afternoon teas.

The former IBM building with a black exoskeleton also houses a Chuan Spa, which specializes in such Eastern therapies as acupuncture, cupping, and gua sha . A 67-foot-long indoor pool and full-service fitness center are available to all guests.

Anyone spending the night in the rooms, with floor-to-ceiling glass windows framing Chicago views, has access to one of the city’s best concierges, who can organize a River North food tour, a Frank Lloyd Wright walking excursion, or a mixology class at Travelle. Don’t leave without taking a photo beside Jaume Plensa’s “Anna” sculpture in the Wacker Street lobby—then walk over to Millennium Park to see his larger works on display. From $605

The Nobu Hotel Chicago

A corner Zen View Suite at the Nobu Hotel Chicago, with wooden floors and large picture windows with city views

A Zen View Suite at the Nobu Hotel Chicago

Courtesy of the Nobu Hotel Chicago

  • Neighborhood: Fulton Market
  • Why we love it: A lively social scene downstairs and serene rooms upstairs

The industrial aesthetic of the Nobu Hotel Chicago ‘s brick-and-steel building weaves seamlessly into the urban fabric of the West Loop, an area of the city that’s nearly always alive with street life. Nobu provides both a boisterous dining scene downstairs and a serene Japanese-influenced vibe upstairs. The hotel’s 115 loft-like guest rooms and suites are accessed via corridors lined with glowing wooden lanterns that make everyone look sexy (even if they didn’t partake in the cocktails downstairs).

Most guest rooms deliver epic views of the city while their double-height concrete ceilings play a cool-kid yin to the otherwise warm-and-fuzzy yang of natural materials found throughout the hotel. (Pro tip: It’s worth splurging on a room with a massive teak soaking tub.) Start your day with a swim in the tranquility pool followed by brunch on the roof, and you’ve already discovered one of Chicago insiders’ favorite outdoor hangouts. The Nobu Hotel is also home to the Windy City’s only villa, appropriately called the Nobu Villa. From $419

Park Hyatt Chicago

  • Why we love it: A creative update puts this local favorite back on the traveler’s map

Following a much-needed $60 million makeover in July 2022, the Park Hyatt Chicago is once again a contender for one of the best hotels in town. Located in the bustling Magnificent Mile neighborhood at 800 North Michigan Avenue, the storied property has been a landmark destination since it opened in 1980 as the first property to bear the Park designation. The renewed sanctuary now delivers a true sense of place, with a refreshed lobby design that’s more of an urban living room, an updated library, and a vibrant new art program spotlighting some of Chicago’s most talented creatives. The hotel’s signature restaurant NoMI (named for the location on North Michigan Avenue) now has three different concepts: NoMI Kitchen, which emphasizes American cuisine with French techniques, NoMI Garden, a terrace space that’s ideal for lunch, and NoMI Lounge, which includes a six-seat sushi bar.

The 146 guest rooms and 36 spacious suites fall under some 20 different room categories (many with accessible showers and features), all redone by design firm Anderson/Miller with a restraint not often seen in such high-end Chicago hotels. Same goes for the NoMI spa, a true holistic wellness destination, complete with Tonal systems, Technogym equipment, Peloton bikes, and a 25-meter-long lap pool. Get most of those feel-good moments by booking the Mindfulness Suite, complete with an AI-powered Bryte Balance bed, a deep soaking tub, and an open-air terrace. From $604

Pendry Chicago

Art deco exterior of the Pendry Chicago, accented with gold

The Pendry Chicago is located in the 1929 Carbide & Carbon building.

Courtesy of the Pendry Chicago

  • Why we love it: The always-active lobby and the secret skyscraping tower bar
  • Loyalty program: I Prefer

Set inside the Prohibition era Carbide & Carbon Building—a green ceramic-wrapped art deco skyscraper that mimics the shape of a bottle of champagne—the Pendry Chicago hits all the right notes. The 364 guest rooms and suites have recently been reinvigorated by Studio Munge in black and white, while the lobby often has guests enjoying the fireplace and sipping some bubbly.

Hungry travelers have a few options, including the hotel’s signature modern French brasserie and café, Venteux, but the real action is upstairs at the French-inspired rooftop, Château Carbide. Set in what would be the cork of this (literally) gilded bottle-shaped tower, the secret plein-air space had never been open to the public until 2021; in June 2023, it was reimagined as an absinthe bar, where the plant-based liquor takes center stage on the cocktail menu, with spectacular city views as the background.

The Pendry also provides your requisite 24-hour fitness center, only here it’s outfitted with everyone’s favorite Technogym fitness equipment and Peloton bikes; a handful of guest rooms come with Tonal digital training equipment. Save some time to play billiards in the downstairs pool room, brightened with artwork from Amsterdam-based Arnout Meijer, whose work plays with our perceptions of light. Step outside into the actual light and the Chicago River and all its merriment are steps away—or grab one of the hotel’s newly acquired complimentary bicycles and a chef-made picnic basket and cycle to the lake for a waterfront meal. From $676

The Peninsula Chicago

Interior of a Peninsula Chicago guest room, in shades of gray with large floral artwork

The Peninsula Chicago’s guest rooms feature floral art motifs by David Qian.

Courtesy of the Peninsula Chicago

  • Why we love it: Classic elegance

Often rated the best hotel in Chicago since it first opened in 2001, the Peninsula Chicago keeps its reputation by offering the finest high-end Chinese cuisine in the city and easily one of the top hotel spas in the Midwest. The Magnificent Mile mainstay has 339 spacious guest rooms and suites, outfitted in an understated style with floral motifs by artist David Qian. Thoughtful details include soaking tubs with televisions, a table for two set beside a window with a view, and linens custom created by Pratesi.

No stay would be complete without a meal at the Shanghai Terrace, where chef de cuisine Elmo Han earns accolades for his modern interpretations of Shanghainese, Cantonese, and Sichuanese classics. During the warmer months, you can dine (or just have a mocktail) on the actual terrace, the whole of Chicago displayed before you. Also required: an afternoon at the 15,000-square-foot Peninsula Spa, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, facials using Biologique Recherche products, and a half Olympic-size pool and sun deck.

Twenty-four hours before check-in, be sure to request “Peninsula Time,” which allows guests to access their rooms as early as 6 a.m. and stay as late as 10 p.m.—a lifesaver for international or early-bird travelers. And eco-conscious travelers take note: The Pen recently received Gold Status from EarthCheck, its second consecutive Gold Status award. From $500

The Robey Chicago

The lobby of the Robey Chicago has a midcentury-modern aesthetic, with green accents

The lobby of the Robey Chicago

Courtesy of the Robey Chicago

  • Neighborhood: Bucktown/Wicker Park
  • Why we love it: The best hotel west of downtown, with a lively rooftop nightlife scene

Hello, rooftop pool! Leave it to Chicagoans to remain optimistic that summer will be amazing, even if winter lasts well into May. The rooftop pool (open to restaurant as well as hotel guests), occupies a prime spot on one corner of Six Points, that crazy intersection where three major shopping streets cross paths. That means the regulars are a mixed bag, but all come in for a good time, whether that means for a meal at the street-level restaurant, Café Robey, with its new all-day brunch, to drink at the poolside Cabana Club bar, or to sneak up to its sister, the Up Room, at the top of the deco tower.

Thanks to Belgian design duo Nicolas Schuybroek Architects and Marc Merkx Interiors, the hotel combines the original 1929 office tower and the adjacent historic Hollander Fireproof Warehouse to create two distinct styles among the 89 guest quarters , either in the Tower or in the Annex (where rooms are best suited for groups). Whichever you choose, save some time to hang in the second-floor’s Clever Coyote, a ’90s-inspired bar, where you can peer over the bustling pedestrian life on Damen and Milwaukee avenues below. You’ll be pleasantly distracted. From $345

St. Regis Chicago

A guest room at the St. Regis Chicago

Courtesy of St. Regis Chicago

  • Neighborhood : Lakeshore East Why we love it: A chance to sleep in the tallest building in the world by a woman architect, with spectacular interiors to match
  • Loyalty program: Marriott Bonvoy

The world has been waiting years for the St. Regis Chicago , located in the city’s 101-floor skyscraper designed by Jeanne Gang, to welcome guests and owners; in 2023, it finally made its stunning debut. The triple-tower building’s architecture was based on the frustum shape, which is basically a pyramid with its top chopped off. (Think of a popcorn box.) That form is replicated subtly throughout the hotel, from the exoskeleton to the marble tiles in the inviting lobby on the Chicago River.

Each of the 192 guest rooms comes with floor-to-ceiling windows and panoramic city views, a dedicated butler, one of four soaking tubs, brass detailing, and curvilinear furnishings from a collaboration between architectural powerhouse Gensler and boutique firm Simeone Deary Design Group. A house car is complimentary to all guests.

Rounding out the amenities: the Miru all-day-dining restaurant that is anything but casual, a new Tuscan steak house concept, a truly cossetting seven-room spa, an indoor pool with an outdoor patio, and the finest urban hotel gym probably anywhere. Was the wait worth it? Indeed it was. From $779

Interior of a guest room at the Sophy Hotel, with floor-to-ceiling window

The Sophy is in Chicago’s leafy Hyde Park neighborhood

Courtesy of the Sophy Chicago

  • Neighborhood: Hyde Park
  • Why we love it: Celebrating Chicago’s talent in a festive South Side hangout

Hyde Park is happening. Catering to the University of Chicago crowd and its visiting dignitaries, the six-year-old Sophy takes inspiration from hometown literary and musical heroes, whose artworks ornament the walls in the popular and always convivial Mesler restaurant. Taking the title of the first boutique hotel on Chicago’s South Side when it opened in 2018, the property occupies a prime spot on 53rd Street—a vibrant commercial hub lined with shops and restaurants owned and frequented by a diverse population that range from academics to local politicians to the city’s cultural influencers. Former UofC professor Barack Obama’s home (and his under-construction presidential library) are nearby.

Chicago-based GREC Architects wove this glass-and-brick hotel into the fabric of the neighborhood, while interiors by New York–based Stonehill Taylor pop with unexpected items: a lighting fixture made of horns here, a circular sofa there. The 98 guest rooms and suites have hardwood floors and neutral tones, enlivened by an abstract fabric artwork by local artist Joey Korom, vinyl records by hometown superstars (Mahalia Jackson, Pops Staples, Junior Wells) that await spinning on the in-room Crosley turntables, and novels by Saul Bellow, Sandra Cisneros, and other Chicago writers. Order up a 5th Ward Burger or book a table at Mesler, then spend the rest of the evening lounging around the double-sided fireplace grooving to live music and some of the best people-watching on the South Side. From $195

Thompson Chicago

The lobby of the Thompson Chicago, with black and mustard-colored chairs centered on a gas fireplace, with bookshelves above it

The lobby of the Thompson Chicago

Courtesy of Thompson Chicago

  • Neighborhood: Gold Coast
  • Why we love it: Old-school sexy meets midcentury modern

This particular area of the Gold Coast is jokingly nicknamed the Viagra Triangle, but the Thompson Chicago doesn’t discriminate by age. The 247-room hotel is dark and moody, drawing artists of every generation to its swanky lobby bar at the back, peppered with colorful canvases and couples sneaking a snuggle in a booth. The whole town is awaiting the opening of Tavern on Rush, a reboot of the beloved steak house that used to reside just up the block. Rumors say this hangout will become a dining destination, what with its cocktail lounge, main dining room, patio, and private rooms spread across 16,000 square feet and multiple levels.

Set among all the best shopping in the Midwest, the Thompson’s midcentury-style guest rooms with hardwood floors provide the perfect minimalist location to unbox those favorite finds from Michigan Avenue around the corner. Digital nomads can book their work meetings in one of the rooms named after the Chicago Seven: countercultural anti-war protesters charged by the U.S. federal government with conspiracy and intent to incite a riot to stop the Vietnam War. The Abbie Hoffman room is a favorite. From $376

Viceroy Chicago

Outdoor pool at the Viceroy Chicago surrounded by wood deck and a few empty lounge chairs, with views of skyscrapers

The outdoor pool at the Viceroy Chicago has views of the city’s skyscrapers.

Courtesy of Viceroy Chicago

  • Why we love it: One of the best rooftop pool brunch scenes around

The exterior of this Gold Coast gem accurately reflects what goes on inside. From the street, visitors are greeted by a 120-year-old, red-brick landmark building that was formerly the Cedar Hotel, presenting a fairly traditional scene at Somerset, a comfort-food staple (with cocktails to pair) for ladies who lunch. But look up and there sprouts Goettsch Partners’ folded glass tower, which emerges from the ornate terra-cotta like a pleated party dress.

Sure enough, the party is all the way upstairs at the rooftop pool—one of Chicago’s liveliest, in a city with fierce competition—where only guests can swim. But the city’s hippest denizens are welcome to hang in the newly refurbished Devereaux bar, bouncing to the beats. Guests can also pop down to the lobby and get a snack from the candy cart, or a coffee to go before snapping up one of the seasonal bikes to guide them past the mansions of the storied Gold Coast. From $425

The Waldorf Astoria Chicago

White guest room at the Waldorf Astoria Chicago, with red artwork above bed and chaise longue by tall windows

A guest room at the Waldorf Astoria Chicago

Courtesy of the Waldorf Astoria Chicago

  • Why we love it: Location, location, location, plus a stunning renovation
  • Loyalty program: Hilton Honors

Designers Lisa Simeone and Gina Deary of KTGY Simeone Deary Design Group oversaw the original design of the Parisian-inspired Waldorf Astoria Chicago in 2009, and the pair was once again brought in to breathe new life into this 215-room Gold Coast gem. Rooms are now bright white, well-lit, and include pops of uplifting magenta. Before you hit any of them, however, there’s much to entice at street level. Enter from the circular driveway and marvel at the Swarovski chandelier, modeled after a vintage brooch, along with the herringbone wood floors and black-and-white pinstriped stone. Don’t miss the Peacock Lounge and its secret sister, Bernard’s Bar, an intimate craft cocktail and champagne boîte, which is virtually unknown even by locals (which means you can always find a seat). Its Scottish and equestrian themes are almost as anachronistic as the mansard roof and circular driveway, which just adds charm to this newly beloved Chicago hotel.

The guest rooms feature oversize headboards and abstract floral bedspreads, while bathrooms are a marvel of marble. For something more, splurge on either the new 1,800-square-foot Astoria Suite or the redesigned 2,400-square-foot Presidential Suite, both of which will have you feeling you’ve been transported to a Parisian pied-à-terre (the latter’s primary bedroom features a fireplace). Travel Guide

  • # 3 in Best Food Cities in the U.S.

"It is hopeless for the occasional visitor to try to keep up with Chicago – she outgrows his prophecies faster than he can make them," wrote Mark Twain in "Life on the Mississippi." Although Twain made up his mind about the Windy City before it even reached its 50th year, his impression of Chicago has proven long-lasting. America's third-largest city has been described in a myriad of ways throughout its lifetime. When Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla were competing for the right to use their forms of electricity to illuminate the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition (also known as the Chicago World's Fair), Chicago was known as a city of industry. When Prohibition set in, notorious mobsters like Al Capone transformed Chicagoland into their own dangerous playground. And intense immigration surges throughout the 20th century brought a host of new identities to the Windy City, including Greek, Polish, Italian, Irish and Jewish.

The 17 best Chicago hotels

Cameron Sperance

Chicago is home to a hefty variety of hotels for travelers craving a stay in the Windy City.

Thanks to a slew of openings and renovations over the last few years, Chicago 's hotel scene is hotter — and more luxurious — than ever before. But this is no one-trick pony when it comes to the hotel experience.

Recommended: The best travel credit cards

Travelers, once they settle the debate over whether to fly into O'Hare or Midway , can find a variety of value hotels in the heart of downtown, or they can splurge for something extra special with a Lake Michigan view. Just as one can take a day off and frequent the Art Institute of Chicago like Ferris Bueller , there are plenty of other paths a trip can take: Deep-dish pizza or Lollapalooza, anyone?

Whether you're in town for business, to catch a Chicago Cubs game, or here to admire T-Rex SUE and the Egyptian mummies at the Field Museum, there's a great hotel for every type of traveler.

Here are the 17 best Chicago hotels and how to book them.

There might be many Park Hyatt flags flying around the world, but Chicago is the original home of this luxury brand. The Park Hyatt Chicago underwent a $60 million renovation in early 2022 that resulted in refreshed guest rooms and suites, and menus at the hotel's NoMI restaurant and lounge. It's likely indicative of where the broader Park Hyatt brand is heading.

The lobby got a slight facelift of its own that resulted in brighter columns and a generally more inviting place to make a first impression. The 146 guest rooms and 36 suites feature walk-in showers with waterfall showerheads. Soaking tubs are a luxurious way to unwind after a busy day at the office or exploring the city, and the rooms now feature a mix of green, gray and cream colors to reflect Chicago's mix of parks and soaring towers of steel and sandstone.

For those looking for more of a wellness getaway with their stay, the Park Hyatt also offers facial and body treatments in NoMI Spa (not to be confused with the restaurant or rooftop lounge).

Rates at the Park Hyatt Chicago currently start at $486, or 21,000 World of Hyatt points, per night.

Sure, a lot of places try to stake the claim of being an oasis in the heart of a city, but The Peninsula Chicago might actually be just that.

The Peninsula Spa is a draw for both visitors and locals, as the facility includes an outdoor sun terrace for warmer weather, a half Olympic-length pool, gym and yoga room, and a relaxation lounge complete with a fireplace perfect for the most frigid Windy City winters. That's only one piece of the Peninsula's ultra-luxurious hospitality streak.

Like several other deluxe hotels in the vicinity, The Peninsula's main public spaces are a few floors above the hecticness of Michigan Avenue. While there's usually plenty to buzz about at the hotel — The Peninsula's Z Bar is a highly coveted spot for cocktails with a view, while The Lobby is the pinnacle of Chicago's power breakfast set — it feels a little more refined away from the street level stress.

The guest rooms are spacious and elegant with neutral colors, tastefully placed floral arrangements and thoughtfully arranged seating areas. The bathrooms are equally as luxurious, with separate soaking tubs and walk-in showers.

Of course, you can truly glam up a visit with a stay in something more opulent like The Peninsula Suite, a 3,645-square-foot home away from home on the 18th floor with a private terrace, baby grand piano and a living room and dining room perfect for entertaining guests. Even the soaking tub in the Peninsula Suite comes with a view.

Rates at the Peninsula Chicago currently start at $575 per night.

When the building resembles a champagne bottle, one can hope the service inside is just as chic and bubbly as the exterior implies.

The Pendry Chicago delivers from its home within the historic art deco Carbide & Carbon building, but it's easy to miss the front door because the tower itself is so striking (black granite, green terracotta and gold leaf). The building's architects, brothers Hubert and Daniel Burnham Jr., reportedly wanted the structure to resemble a bottle of bubbly with gold foil on top.

After checking in at the living room-like lobby, turn the corner to the gilded hallway with a bank of golden elevators ready to whisk you up to your room. Other spaces within the hotel are far more subdued, so the Roaring '20s vibe largely disappears once you leave ground level.

Guest rooms are designed with a clean, minimalist aesthetic: white, black, gray, and bronze, with the occasional pop of burnt red driving much of the color scheme. Marble bathrooms feature walk-in showers and MiN New York amenities.

While there are several ways to drink and sip at the Pendry, Château Carbide is one of the more Instagrammable. Aiming to combine the French Riviera with Chicago, the rooftop bar operates year-round (swap out Aperol spritzes for hot toddies in the winter). Bar Pendry , on the other hand, is a more dimly lit hideaway with wood-paneled walls, cozy seating areas and a fireplace fit for sipping cocktails over secrets adjacent to the lobby.

Rates at the Pendry Chicago currently start at $242 per night.

The hotel industry might be moving in the broader direction of bringing down the walls and better-connecting guests to a surrounding neighborhood. The Waldorf Astoria Chicago doesn't appear to have gotten the memo … and that's perfectly OK.

It's a few blocks from downtown Chicago, which gives guests more of the vibe of living like locals — very posh locals, that is — instead of staying blocks away from some of the most tourist-trekked parts of the city.

Most rooms come with a fireplace and exude classic luxury with a largely black-and-white design scheme. Velvet couches, chandeliers and black-lacquered doors add to the chicness throughout the hotel.

If you're looking for a well-connected friend to nab tickets to a show or game — or a hard-to-come-by reservation — the Waldorf concierge is just the person to do your bidding. Waldorf habitués might notice an outpost of Peacock Alley — the lounge from the original Waldorf Astoria in New York City and increasingly an offering at Waldorf hotels elsewhere in the world — wasn't originally in the Chicago branch of the luxe brand.

That changed ever-so-slightly in October 2022 with the arrival of the Peacock Lounge , which opened as part of a broader renovation to the hotel's guest rooms and spa. Peacock Lounge pays tribute to Peacock Alley while two other new dining options — the Scottish-themed Bernard's Bar (which initially closed down 13 years ago and now gets a revival) and the American-focused Brass Tack restaurant — also opened amid the renovation.

Rates at the Waldorf Astoria Chicago currently start at $566 per night.

Luxuriate in proximity to some of Chicago's best districts with a stay at the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago. Oak Street Beach is just a short walk away, while the more cardio-driven guest can go on a run along the Lake Michigan shoreline. For those whose idea of exercise is shopping 'til they drop, Oak Street is just around the corner and features high-end boutiques and restaurants.

The palatial Four Seasons guest rooms come with nonpareil views of the Chicago skyline or Lake Michigan, and it's easy to feel like a demigod in the hotel's Roman-inspired pool (there's just something extra luxe about doing the backstroke under a domed ceiling, no?).

Plus, if you forgot to pack something for a night out on the town, it's nice to have Bloomingdales, Gucci and the rest of the 900 North Michigan Shops mall right downstairs.

Rates at the Four Seasons Chicago currently start at $530 per night.

Don't let the restaurant behind the name of the hotel fool you: Nobu's 115 guest rooms and suites excel in design and luxury just as well as their dining hot spot of a sibling.

Nobu Hotel Chicago's calm aesthetic begins in the lobby where sleek, dark walls and furnishings are punctuated by the occasional pop of floral or gold leaf. Guest rooms exude Japanese minimalism with plush, white bedding and sleek black headboards. Walk-in showers and Natura Bissé bath amenities await in the bathroom. Splurge for a suite, and treat yourself to a soaking tub with views of the Chicago skyline.

Along with being home to the Nobu Chicago restaurant, the hotel features a rooftop serving up cocktails and small plates. If you're still hungry after that, the hotel's West Loop location is convenient to other top-tier dining rooms along Chicago's Restaurant Row, like Stephanie Izzard's Girl & the Goat .

Rates at the Nobu Hotel Chicago currently start at $331 per night.

Within the Ludwig Mies van der Rohe-designed 330 North Wabash skyscraper (better known as the IBM Building), the Langham appears to follow Mies's motto of "less is more."

Guest rooms and suites are bright and tastefully refined and offer incredible up-close views of the Chicago skyline. A largely earth-tone color palette runs through most room and suite offerings, with the occasional accent of dark wood furniture or a purple blanket artfully arranged here or there.

Soaking tubs and rainfall showers characterize the palatial bathrooms. Higher-end suites like the Regent Suite and Infinity Suite include elegant gold-leaf ceilings in living areas and ornate floral wall decor.

Architecture buffs should book a table at Travelle , the Langham's farm-to-table restaurant that includes views of the neighboring circular towers of Marina City (made famous in pop culture for their feature as the album art on Chicago-based Wilco's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot"). But also save time to unwind at Chuan Spa, part of the Langham's wellness facility that also features an indoor pool and gym.

Rates at the Langham Chicago currently start at $473 per night.

While Michigan Avenue might be the most upfront with its luxury offerings, thanks to all the fashion boutiques, there are plenty of high-end hotel offerings just off Chicago's main thoroughfare. Viceroy Chicago, in the city's glitzy Gold Coast neighborhood, manages to wow without going overboard with ostentation.

A strong color palette of deep blue and gold, along with rich velvet fabrics on couches and chairs, makes this an inviting, luxurious place to stay. Guest room decor is a mix of Southwestern chic, retro glam and city grit with picture windows and gold accent walls — a funky mix that still pulls together nicely.

The Gold Coast is known for being a major draw for foodies and bar-hoppers alike, and Viceroy Chicago delivers on both: The Devereaux lounge on the 18th floor serves up cocktails and small bites (who doesn't like a black truffle deviled egg alongside their frozen rosé?) in the presence of a rooftop pool while Somerset restaurant downstairs serves updated American fare like burgers, steak and seafood.

Rates at Viceroy Chicago currently start at $239 per night .

chicago tourist hotels

The 182 rooms at the Hoxton, Chicago, are cozy — if not downright small — but well decorated and efficiently laid out. Leather paneling, custom-designed bedding by local artist Cody Hudson and large windows compensate for limited square footage.

Plus, the Hoxton beckons guests out of the room and into hip public spaces like its rooftop Peruvian restaurant Cabra Cevicheria (another Chef Stephanie Izzard mainstay). Music lovers will find plenty to enjoy at Lazy Bird , an opulently decorated cocktail venue with a stunning teal, underlit bar at its center. Of course, the weekend live music acts that perform here are likely getting everyone's attention more than the design of the bar.

Think of the Hoxton as though CitizenM or Moxy had a high-end sibling — or if WeWork ended up being a success and got into the business of hotels. In fact, the Hoxton, Chicago, even offers a co-working feature for those looking for a place to work ($30 for the day, and that comes with unlimited tea and coffee).

Rates at The Hoxton, Chicago , currently start at $188 per night.

chicago tourist hotels

Sofitel may not have as much of a presence in the U.S. as it does elsewhere in the world, but its Chicago showing certainly makes a splash. That slanted facade is only part of it, as the chic public spaces exude cool for a hotel that tends to draw a more international and business-oriented crowd.

Rooms are a melange of cozy and sultry, with plush beds and paneled accent walls alongside leather seats and chaise lounges. Bathrooms are spacious and feature Balmain bath amenities. Nightly rates are also generally more affordable than similar high-end hotels closer to Michigan Avenue.

While hotel bars can always be fun, Sofitel's Le Bar — this is a French brand, after all — is a particular highlight for those looking for a sleek spot to get a drink.

Rates at the Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile currently start at $175 per night.

chicago tourist hotels

The Chicago Athletic Association name might have you thinking you're heading into a fitness-focused hotel, and we hate to burst your bubble, but Pelotons won't be the focal point here. Instead, it's like stepping inside a super-exclusive private club (which it originally was when the establishment first opened in 1893).

The edifice's original Venetian-inspired Neo-Gothic design is set to advantage indoors as well, where ornate stone fireplaces anchor plush seating vignettes. Sure, the athletic part kicks in, too: Old squash and fencing court flooring now panels the walls of the elevators, pummel horses serve as benches at the foot of guest room beds, and robes pay homage to what a boxer wears heading out to a prize fight.

Classic style reigns in guest rooms, ranging from brass-and-iron bed frames to clawfoot soaking tubs in select suites.

The playful design is reason enough to book a stay, but the Chicago Athletic Association also wins over guests with a variety of food and dining options — especially Cindy's , a rooftop bar 13 stories up that overlooks Lake Michigan.

Rates at the Chicago Athletic Association are currently $157 per night.

chicago tourist hotels

IHG One Rewards members looking for a high-end stay in downtown Chicago are fairly limited to a sole InterContinental on Michigan Avenue or two Kimpton properties. The Kimpton Gray Hotel wins out for its central location, strong design focus and overall comfort compared to its siblings.

While all guest rooms feature comfortable bedding, walk-in showers and city views, it might be worth considering an upgrade to a suite. These higher-end accommodations feature nicer (larger) bathrooms with soaking tubs and spa-like elements — sometimes a necessity while on a work trip.

The Kimpton Gray is a great option for travelers of all kinds, but it's hard to shake the notion this is a hotel geared toward business travelers. Even the popular Vol. 39 bar and its library aesthetic scream Don Draper and a "Mad Men" after-work special. Hey, the drinks go down the same whether you're there for business or leisure.

Rates at the Kimpton Gray currently start at $160 per night.

chicago tourist hotels

Along with the Park Hyatt, the Ritz-Carlton, Chicago, has a case for being one of the best luxury business hotels in the city. Don't rule this hotel out if you're coming just to sightsee, though. The Ritz is on the block between Michigan Avenue and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and only steps away from the 360 Chicago observation deck at 875 North Michigan Avenue (better known as the John Hancock Center until 2018).

Some of the similarity with the Park Hyatt continues with guest rooms, as both hotels feature an aesthetic of earth tones, light wooden furnishings and spacious bathrooms. The Ritz-Carlton wins out for better views — it is a few blocks closer to Lake Michigan, after all.

While "location, location, location" might be one of the best assets of the hotel, the glamorous feel throughout the hotel is certainly nothing to overlook. The Ritz-Carlton Spa offers a variety of treatments to unwind, while the hotel gym's views over Lake Michigan should help inspire anyone to hit a personal record on the treadmill.

Torali is the Ritz's Italian-focused restaurant that also includes a bar and rooftop lounge of the same name; though, morning coffee at The Cafe — a glassed-in setting with a greenhouse-like vibe — can feel just as fabulous.

Rates at the Ritz-Carlton, Chicago , currently start at $509 per night.

chicago tourist hotels

The Thompson Chicago represents a stay in the heart of the city without feeling so sterile or standardized as a major chain hotel (even though it is part of World of Hyatt). The room designs skew masculine with a mix of dark frames and creamy wall colors. Pillow lovers can rejoice, as there is an abundance of those to make dreams even sweeter when you finally get to curl up in bed.

It's easy to splurge and spend more for a room or suite with a balcony or a better view of Lake Michigan and the surrounding skyline. You also won't have to go far for good food: Nico Osteria off the Thompson's lobby is a beloved local staple for Italian seafood.

If you're dining elsewhere, save time for a glass of something delightful at Salone Nico , a wine and cocktail lounge with velvet furniture galore that feels like something the "Sex and the City" girls would have patronized.

Rates at the Thompson Chicago currently start at $189 per night.

chicago tourist hotels

Soho House Chicago, like others in the Soho House network, isn't the easiest place to get into. For starters, you have to be a member, and the wait list to even be considered to join is as hefty as it's ever been. But there is a hack: Just book a stay in a Soho House guest room, and you can at least live like a member for a night or two.

Indulge in Soho House's variety of restaurants, like Cecconi's Roof Bar for Italian or dabble in Friday or Saturday afternoon tea service at the lobby bar. There's even a health club equipped with cardio equipment and strength training, and personal trainers available. Steam rooms and lounges await after all that hard work.

Rates at Soho House Chicago currently start at $425 per night (and then tack on the additional $130 Soho Friends fee) for non-members.

chicago tourist hotels

Sumptuous interior design, a central location in the heart of the Magnificent Mile and an overall posh feel make a stay at The Gwen feel like you're in Windy City high society. Housed in the historic art deco McGraw-Hill Building, the Gwen is a jewel in Marriott's Luxury Collection of design-focused hotels.

A luxe rooftop terrace overlooks Michigan Avenue with a peek at Lake Michigan. The Gwen even offers a glamping package for those looking to sleep under the stars on the terrace. Otherwise, Upstairs at the Gwen offers terrace cocktails — from a chilled white wine in the summer to warm drinks served among the fire pits during chillier weather.

The Gwen's 311 guest rooms and suites are tastefully appointed with a mix of sleek bedding in gray and other earth tones as well as Frette linens. Suites are an indulgent upgrade at the Gwen, as some feature terraces — the Gwen Lux Suite's terrace can accommodate a whopping 50 guests — and others are just tranquil spots to take in city views over the Magnificent Mile.

Rates at The Gwen currently start at $224 per night.

chicago tourist hotels

The Virgin Hotel Chicago is where you go for an un-stuffy stay in the heart of downtown Chicago. The crowd skews younger, but how could it not with its driving decor theme of deep red and embrace of bar-forward fun?

Guest rooms are standard Virgin Hotels fare: clean, modern and sleek, with comfortable beds hugged by a creamy leather headboard and footboard that beg you to spend the morning working in your bathrobe. Bathrooms include well-lit dressing areas and often feature privacy doors to cordon them off from the bedroom.

Cerise , the Virgin's rooftop cocktail lounge, is highly popular in the summer but also features a holiday pop-up in the winter to keep folks coming in during Chicago's colder months. For those sticking closer to ground level, Miss Ricky's offers a popular brunch that seems like the perfect place to recap the prior night out on the town.

Rates at the Virgin Hotel Chicago currently start at $159 per night.

best hotels in chicago

$$$+ | 5 Star | Chicago Classic | Lake Access | Afternoon Teatime

Are you a fan of teatime? The Drake is Chicago’s pre-eminent hotel. Along the Magnificent Mile next to Lake Michigan, The Drake’s location is second-to-none. And when you walk inside, you’ll feel it.

The Drake has a regal elegance and a daily teatime that has host icons such as Bing Crosby, Walt Disney, George Gershwin, and Charles Lindbergh. So join the storied history of the Drake, where legends like Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio have stayed in past years.

chicago tourist hotels

$$+ | 4 Star | Rooftop Pool | Historic Chicago Architecture

The Robey stands out. Literally. In the middle of trendy Wicker Park, The Robey towers above everything else in the vicinity and offers unmatched views of the Chicago skyline. In this historic triangle building, this hotel features a bar, café, and rooftop pool.

And since it’s right across from the Blue line stop, it’s a quick ride to O’Hare airport or downtown. The hotel maintains an industrial modern vibe that carries into the rooms (some of which aren’t terribly spacious) but they all have lots of sunlight.

Then add the attentive staff and access to multiple gorgeous lounges? The Robey is easily one of the best hotels in Chicago.

The Willows Hotel

best places to stay in chicago

$$ | 4 Star | Eclectic | Excellent Amenities & Location

If you’re not looking to break the bank, but still looking for somewhere memorable, you’ll want to try The Willows Hotel. This spot in Lincoln Park is a short walk from the Lincoln Park Zoo, but that’s hardly the most interesting thing about it.

The vibes in the common areas of this hotel pay tribute to the nearby zoo with bold colors and patterns, which means kids might just love it.

You’ll stay in one of 51 rooms or 4 suites, all of which have mini fridges and bathrobes. The Willows takes the atmosphere of a B&B and streamlines it into a quirky and down-to-earth hotel, yet it still has the phenomenal service you’d expect from a top hotel.

21c Museum Hotel Chicago

chicago tourist hotels

$$$ | 4 Star | Museum + Hotel | On-Site Spa

If you’re a museum lover, 21c is probably the spot for you. This modern hotel is gorgeous. The rooms are luxurious, inspired by contemporary art, and feature the standard amenities of free Wi-Fi and a mini-bar, but no mini fridges or microwaves.

But outside of your room in 21c, you’ll find the entire hotel is an elaborate art museum featuring contemporary artists. Walking through the dark and moody hallways of this hotel is its own cultural experience. The location is close to Mag Mile and the Field Museum, Shedd, Aquarium, and Adler Aquarium nearby. Ambassador chicago.

best hotels in chicago

$$$ | 4 Star | Incredible Interior | Coffeeshop, Bar, Restaurant

Ambassador Chicago sits in the Gold Coast neighborhood—one of the most luxurious parts of Chicago. And the moment you walk in, you feel it. With a warm marble fireplace in the lobby, and classic white-on-white contemporary rooms, the Ambassador feels as luxurious as any 5 star hotel. And with an on-site coffee shop, bar, and restaurant, as well as a fitness room, it’s everything you’d need.

Not to mention Gold Coast features some absolute gorgeous facades on other buildings. So whether you’re inside the Ambassador, or walking the streets of Gold Coast, you’ll want to keep an eye on the architecture here.

The Leavitt Street Inn & Tavern

cool places to stay in chicago

$$ | 3 Star | Upscale Tavern | For Local Vibes

If you’ve ever wanted to experience a tavern or inn, you might want to try Leavitt Street. This spot is outside of downtown Chicago in nearby Bucktown. You’ll find a charming little tavern-style inn with quaint rooms and hardwood floors—only three of them! The word “inn” doesn’t quite do it justice though.

Guests can use a shared kitchen, and they have access to a gorgeous terrace. But downstairs you’ll find a chill bar with local beers on tap. With the bed and breakfast beerfest setup, Leavitt Street is a perfect spot for a relaxing weekend away.

If you’re looking for something non-traditional, or enjoy an upscale hostel sort of feel, this is a brilliant choice to live like a Chicago native. Location, photos, and booking

Viceroy Chicago

best hotels in chicago

$$$ | 5 Star | Vivid Decor | Rooftop Bar & Pool

It’s called Viceroy Chicago, and that’s because you’ll probably feel like royalty staying here. With absolutely stunning rooms and an art deco feel, this Gold Coast hotel is photo-worthy from every angle. But you probably won’t have time for photos since it has a rooftop bar, lounge, and pool.

You’ll probably be too busy taking in the incredible views of the city. If you do decide to leave the hotel, you’ll find yourself right near Magnificent Mile, as well as a Red Line L stop for easily getting around the city. It’s hands-down one of the best hotels in Chicago.

Location, photos, and booking

The Publishing House

chicago tourist hotels

$$$ | 4 Star | Bed & Breakfast | Modern Decor

Oftentimes bed and breakfasts get a reputation for being quaint, old-timey, or rustic. The Publishing House is anything but. Deeply modern with a gorgeous common area, this bed and breakfast offers a bar and shared lounge area right in the middle of West Loop.

This boutique bed and breakfast features a buffet breakfast better than most brunches, and plenty of common areas to socialize. If you’re looking for absolute privacy, this might not be the right spot for you. But if you want to up your community vibes game, or you just want to make a new travel buddy, The Publishing House is the place to do it.

Just act quickly, so you can grab on of the 11 rooms here—some of which have deep-soaking tubs!

The Warwick Allerton is a Chicago landmark. Featuring a giant neon sign that dominates Magnificent Mile, anyone who walks the area has spotted this hotel. Sadly, the iconic rooftop bar is no longer open, but the location is still ideal.

With suites that offer sky-high views of the city, the Allerton is ideal for city sightseeing. Most rooms around the beds are a little small, and you’ll find some hidden fees, but the marble bathrooms and separate sitting rooms make up for it.

This is a more traditional hotel, where the rooms are comfortable and warm. But you’ll love the unparalleled access to the city, and easy navigability just by looking for the neon “Tip Top Tap” sign.

Pendry Chicago

best hotels in chicago

$$ | 4 Star | Old & New | Amazing Location

Pendry is a perfect cocktail of both new and old. Paying homage to old-school Chicago, this hotel features gorgeous architecture and a jaw-dropping interior. Think: gold-toned lobby.

Pendry balances elements of the boutique hotel against the upscale hotel, and it showcases vintage styles in a way that’s absolutely brand new. For instance, every Sunday you can join them for tea time where they make cocktails using a tea base.

The rooms themselves are a bit less ostentatious than the lobby, but the views are incredible. If we’re honest, the suites are a little bit underwhelming, except for the fact that they’re more spacious than many Chicago hotel rooms.

Not to mention, this hotel is also along Magnificent Mile,—just a short walk away from Water Tower Place. Pendry is one of the best hotels in Chicago at a great price.

$$ | 3 Star | Massive Pool Deck | $1 Blackjack

This boutique hotel is gorgeous. And with everything themed after Einstein, you might feel smarter after staying here. The restaurant is named The Albert Tavern, and the brunch is pretty top-notch.

You’ll love the unique rooms that are dark, swanky, and industrial all in one. The bathrooms are enclosed by glass, but don’t worry, you can just pull the curtain for privacy.

But what I find most fun about ECM2 are the robots: Leo and Cleo. These robotic helpers are definitely a gimmick, but alongside the science and technology theme, they make EMC2 feel like you really are living at the cutting edge of technology.

So if you want to have a high-tech vacation, or just stay in an unforgettable boutique hotel in downtown Chicago, choose to be a genius by staying at Hotel EMC2.

Sable at Navy Pier

chicago tourist hotels

$$ | 4 Star | On the Lake | Skyline Views

Navy Pier is a legendary Chicago spot. With food, shops, a gigantic Ferris wheel, as well as the stream of boats and cruise opportunities, the pier is worth a visit. If you want to make it a centerpiece of your visit with a lakeside view, Sable is the perfect spot.

You’ll feel comfortable in a clean, crisp hotel by Hilton with classy decor and traditional amenities, though we do wish they had microwaves and fridges in the rooms. To make up for it, you’ll find Chicago Shakespeare Theater, the Children’s Museum, and easy access to Mag Mile right outside the hotel.

Best of all, Navy Pier hosts a regular fireworks show (Wednesday and Saturday nights in the summer). If you stay at Sable, you’ll be perfectly positioned to view the fireworks and the Chicago skyline glistening in the water.

  • Key Street: Michigan Ave. Leads to 7 Key Hotels in Chicago

A brief guide to all the MICHELIN Key hotels in Chicago.

Travel Hotels Chicago MICHELIN Keys

chicago tourist hotels

On April 24, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide announced its very first Key hotels in the United States — a brand new distinction recognizing the most outstanding hotels in the country. We're thrilled to report that in Chicago, eight hotels earned at least One Key. Of those, half make their home in the kinds of historic buildings that give this city its well-earned reputation as one of the most architecturally distinguished cities in the country. Follow Michigan Avenue north from the heart of the Loop to the Gold Coast and you’ll pass within two blocks of all but one of them. The Chicago Athletic Association sits within a Venetian Gothic landmark. The Gwen makes its home in a storied 1929 Art Deco skyscraper. The Pendry sets up shop in the masterpiece that is the 1929 Art Deco Carbide & Carbon Building. And the lower floors of the Viceroy make use of the meticulously-preserved, 1920s-vintage Cedar Hotel. There are Key hotels too in newer builds, among them the Peninsula (with uniformed bellboys and staffers who seem to know the name of each individual guest) and the Waldorf Astoria , its lobby a marble marvel. Below, explore the map and scroll down for more about each of the MICHELIN Guide’s eight hotels in Chicago.

These Chicago hotels are the best in the U.S. according to the Michelin Guide

The Peninsula Chicago, Chicago Athletic Association and more all earned the inaugural U.S. Michelin Keys.

Jeffy Mai

The Michelin Guide has long been one of the most prestigious evaluators of culinary experiences, and now it’s expanding its expertise to hotels.

The inaugural recipients of Michelin Keys in the U.S. have just been announced by the French tire company. Hotels in Atlanta, California, Chicago, Colorado, Florida, New York and Washington D.C.—the cities where the Michelin Guide also recommends restaurants—were eligible for the awards. Similar to how it judges eateries, Michelin inspectors took anonymous stays or visits to hotels across the country. In total, 124 accommodations received either one, two or three Michelin Keys, including eight spots in Chicago.

The Peninsula Chicago , Pendry Chicago and The Langham, Chicago all earned two Keys. The designation is bestowed upon places that are “truly unique and exceptional in every way, where a memorable experience is always guaranteed,” Michelin explained. “A hotel of character, personality and charm that’s operated with obvious pride and considerable care. Eye-catching design or architecture, and a real sense of the locale make this an exceptional place to stay.”

One Key was awarded to the Chicago Athletic Association , Nobu Hotel Chicago , The Gwen , Viceroy Chicago and Waldorf Astoria Chicago . These hotels are “a true gem with its own character and personality,” according to Michelin. “It may break the mould, offer something different or simply be one of the best of its type. Service always goes the extra mile and provides significantly more than similarly priced establishments.”

These hotels join Chicago’s acclaimed collection of Michelin-starred restaurants as the best of the best in their industry.

No Chicago hotel earned three Michelin Keys. The company plans on announcing Key winners in other U.S. destinations later this year.

8 Chicago hotels land on Michelin's new ranking of ‘most outstanding hotels' in the US

According to list, half of the chicago hotels on the list are in historic buildings, published april 25, 2024 • updated on april 25, 2024 at 4:42 pm.

You may know about the Michelin guide to Chicago restaurants . But what about Michelin-rated hotels?

Thursday, the luxury guide released its first ever list of "Michelin Key" hotels in the United States, meant to highlight the "most outstanding hotels in the country."

Watch NBC Chicago local news and weather for free 24/7

"Like the Michelin Stars for restaurants, the Michelin Keys are our most outstanding hotels," an announcement from Michelin read. "These are places that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting."

According to the guide, the hotels are separated into tiers, with "keys'" meant to represent stars. For example, "three key" hotels are similar to restaurants with three Michelin stars, the guide says.

Feeling out of the loop? We'll catch you up on the Chicago news you need to know. Sign up for the weekly Chicago Catch-Up newsletter here.

In total, 124 hotels were ranked. Eight Illinois hotels made the list, with three Chicago hotels earning a "two key" designation, and five Chicago hotels earning a "one key" designation. Of the eight hotels, seven were located on Chicago's iconic Michigan Avenue .

Among the list of 33 "two key" hotels, were the Pendry, the Langham and the Peninsula in Chicago. On the list of 80 "one key" hotels were the Chicago Athletic Association, Nobu Hotel Chicago, The Gwen, Viceroy Chicago and Waldorf Astoria.

According to list, half of the Chicago hotels on the list are in historic buildings.

Michelin guide awards its first hotel keys in the u.s..

The exterior of Chicago's Pendry Hotel in the Carbide & Carbon Building

Last year, when World’s 50 Best issued its first global ranking of hotels, only two properties in the US made the cut: the Equinox and Aman New York hotels, both in Manhattan.

Now Michelin has arrived stateside, in its second-ever presentation of “keys” — a new system from the eponymous tiremaker that’s doling out one, two or three key emblems, like its restaurant stars but to the world’s worthiest hotels.

Out of more than 1,000 luxury hotels across the country, 11 were awarded three keys. The winners were all in California and New York, from Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur to Single Thread Inn in Healdsburg and the Whitby Hotel in Midtown. Aman New York, echoing its position on World’s 50 Best, was also included; Equinox, meanwhile, received no keys at all.

Significantly, keys were only distributed to hotels in seven primary markets across the U.S. where the Michelin Guide also reviews restaurants: New York City, California, Chicago, Florida, Colorado, Atlanta and Washington, D.C. Michelin says next year’s ceremony will expand to include more of the U.S.

One key denotes a “special” stay, two make it “exceptional” and three reflect hotels that are “extraordinary.”

Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide, has described the criteria for these awards in highly subjective terms. Earlier this month he told Bloomberg that these most exceptional properties will be judged based off “the experience” alone. Rather than requiring them to adhere to certain definitions—like having a spa, pool or minimum staff-to-guest ratios—the hotel experience “has to be memorable and singular in a way that will give people a feel for local character,” he explained. At the awards ceremony, he built upon that sentiment. “We’re not a checklist of amenities,” he said.

This is still an improvement over other ranking systems, which rely on already-published articles by outside media or complimentary stays to produce their results; by contrast, Michelin has committed to independently paying for its hotel reviewers to stay at each property. In an interview after the ceremony, Poullennec went further, adding that multiple inspectors stay at each hotel, sometimes multiple times, before assigning keys.

“We have boots on the grounds, inspectors working the field in every country, leaving no stone unturned and also looking for discoveries, new openings, in order to be fully up to date in their recommendation,” Poullennec said in remarks during the key presentation.

The intimate U.S. ceremony, held at New York City’s Museum of Art and Design, is the second such presentation by Michelin this month, with the first-ever awards being handed out to French hotels on April 8, in Paris. At that event, 24 hotels were awarded three keys, including five of Paris’ 12 “palace” hotels. And more such ceremonies are coming: Awards will be announced in Spain next week and in Italy on May 7, before heading to Japan in July.

To some American hoteliers, Michelin’s recognition holds outsize importance. In background conversations leading up to the event, owners of several new independent hotels in major cities held hope that earning multiple keys could help them compete with better-established luxury brands such as Aman, Rosewood or Ritz-Carlton. That may be the case for the boutique London-based Firmdale Hotels, whose two New York hotels, the Whitby and the Crosy Street Hotel, both earned three keys.

Others in more remote locations expected that any honor could help them lure talent—places like Twin Farms in Barnard, Vermont, or Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tennessee, for example. Unfortunately the prospect will have to wait.

It’s not that Michelin is the only designation that consumers can use to parse quality hotels. Walk into many of the key-awarded hotels, and you might see a Forbes’ five-star plaque—that honor was given to some 80 luxury hotels in the US in 2023, and American travel magazines dole out similar recognitions each year. But Michelin’s reputation spans much of the globe, in a way that the others do not.

“Our users say that when they are looking for places to stay, they will spend on average 10 hours on 10 different platforms to do so,” Poullennec said at the ceremony. “They’re at a loss. There is a demand for real recommendations and independent ones, that you can trust and go beyond brand labels, and that apply from one country to another—a global reference.”

Still, there are many skeptics. Michelin’s entry into the hotel market comes at a time when the company is looking for new revenue streams and attracting criticism for expanding its Michelin Dining Guides in a way that prioritizes destinations with big marketing budgets, even when they don’t have the restaurant quality to back it up.

The Atlanta Michelin Guide, for instance, was sponsored by the local tourism board in a deal worth $1 million, but no restaurant in the city earned more than a single star. Its inclusion as one of the first destinations in the hotel keys presentation will come as a surprise to luxury hotel aficionados; the city is not widely known as a hub for luxury hotels, and only three hotels in the city were included, each with one key.

Pouillennec tells Bloomberg the overlap is because restaurant critics need places to sleep; that made it logistically feasible to prioritize these places. Although, as he told Bloomberg earlier in Paris, they’re not excluding the possibility of sponsored hotel guides in the future.

Also leading to skepticism about the awards is Michelin’s acquisition of Tablet Hotels, which took place in 2018 for an undisclosed sum; it’s a curated booking platform for luxury and boutique hotels that features some 6,000 hotels globally and around 950 properties in the US.

The technology gives Michelin a place where it can facilitate bookings for its recommended hotels, earn commissions from them, and also collect feedback from guests about their stays. As a result, some hoteliers have wondered whether Michelin has prioritized Tablet properties in its inspections; the company says reviews are completely independent and carried out by full-time employees, but adds that every hotel it recognizes is immediately bookable on its website.

“Nothing matters more than the independence of our recommendations,” Poullennec said.

In all, 124 hotels in the US were recognized with keys. Here is the full list of winners divided by market:

chicago tourist hotels

Chicago isn't just Frank Sinatra's kind of town, it's the kind of town that's got something for everyone. It's a big city that's not quite as crowded and fast-paced as New York but still filled with more things to do than you'll have time.

Chicago is home to more than 2.7 million people, making it the third largest city in the U.S. and the largest city in the midwest. It's lined with urban beaches located along Lake Michigan and is known as the birthplace of the modern skyscraper. A massive fire in 1871 destroyed much of the city center, leaving behind just a handful of structures and paving the way for Chicago to construct one of America's tallest and most beautiful skylines.

With professional baseball, basketball, football, hockey, and soccer teams, Chicago is a sports aficianado's dream come true. Catch a Chicago Bears game at Soldier Field. If football isn't for you, catch a Cubs or White Sox ball game, a round of soccer with the Chicago Fire, the Bulls for a basketball game, or a Blackhawks game for hockey fans.

Chicago isn't just about sports, though. It's also a foodie paradise with world-class museums, architectural gems, luxury shopping, and a long list of live music venues and comedy clubs. It's a place where you're sure to find plenty of things to do — and eat. Just make sure you save room for deep dish pizza and a Chicago dog.

Central Standard Time

Best Time to Go

Chicago may have freezing winters, but the Windy City makes up for it with warm, sunny summer days filled with live music, neighborhood festivals, and bright blue skies. The best time to visit Chicago is between June and September when the city's urban beaches are at their best. Runners may want to wait until October when the city hosts the annual Chicago marathon. June brings the well-known Chicago Blues Festival while July brings the Taste of Chicago, an outdoor food festival that allows for sampling of several local favorites. Each August, Chicago hosts the Lollapalooza music festival, the Chicago Jazz Festival and the Chicago Air and Water Show. For travelers brave enough to face freezing temperatures, December brings the Christkindlmarket, a chance to lace up your skates and glide through iconic Grant Park at the Maggie Daley Ice Skating Ribbon and ample opportunities to view Christmas lights at the Lincoln Park Zoo and Navy Pier.

Things to Know

Chicago is a city of more than 200 neighborhoods, each with its own unique character and charm. Chicago and its surrounding areas are collectively referred to as Chicagoland.

Chicago hot dogs are topped with yellow mustard, chopped white onions, sweet pickle relish, a dill pickle spear, tomato, pickled sport peppers and a touch of celery salt. Whatever you do, do not ask for ketchup.

How to Get Around

Chicago is a highly walkable city with an excellent public transit system that includes both trains and busses. Uber, Lyft and cabs are also plentiful across much of Chicago.

Trains : Chicago's train system is known as the "El" because it's elevated and runs above ground across much of the city. It's easy to get from both Chicago O'Hare and Chicago Midway to downtown Chicago via the El.

Buses : Chicago's train system is extensive, but learn to use its buses and there will be few places you can't get to via public transit. Bus information is available via text, follow the instructions posted on bus stop signs.

Taxis : Metered taxis are easy to find throughout downtown and surrounding neighborhoods, though Uber and Lyft are likely to be cheaper.

Rideshare : Uber and Lyft are your main options in Chicago. Uber tends to be a little cheaper than Lyft, though that's not always the case.

See which US hotels earned Michelin Guides' 1st key distinctions

Travelers seeking unique experiences can book directly through Michelin Guide.

Much like the coveted Michelin Stars bestowed to restaurants around the world providing the best culinary experiences, there is now a new distinction for outstanding hotels from Michelin Guide to help travelers find truly unique accommodations and special stays.

Gwendal Poullennec, international director of Michelin Guide, unveiled the first ever U.S. selection of 124 hotels to receive the Michelin Keys award on Wednesday.

PHOTO: Gwendal Poullennec presents the Michelin Key awards to a selection of U.S. hoteliers.

Of the total U.S. winners, which were spread out across seven destinations, 80 properties earned 1 Michelin Key, indicating "a very special stay," 33 hotels earned two Keys to mark "an exceptional stay," and 11 others earned three Keys for "an extraordinary stay."

The tiers of distinction are meant to serve as a new benchmark for travelers, qualifying each hotel experience in broader terms rather than simply amenities.

Michelin Keys awarded to 124 U.S. hotels

See some highlights from the full inaugural list below, with hotels in Georgia, California, Illinois, Colorado, Florida, New York and Washington, D.C., among the top American properties, promising outstanding experiences.

With this new rollout, Poullennec said the Michelin Guide's ambition is to become the first global independent booking platform for outstanding restaurants and hotels.

France's Michelin Keys were announced earlier this month , with Spain to follow on April 29, Italy on May 7 and Japan on July 4.

CF-Hotels Initiative Reiterates TAT’s Push Towards Sustainable Tourism

The www.cf-hotels.com online platform currently has a network of 160 hotels across Thailand.

Photo of TAT Newsroom

Bangkok, 25 April 2024 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) invites hotel operators and tourists to be a part of its ‘CF-Hotels’ initiative to help reduce the impacts of climate change.

The www.cf-hotels.com online platform has been created to enable hotel and lodging operators to create a database of environmental inventory (energy, water, waste and greenhouse gases) and calculate the carbon footprint of their operations.

This will reflect the impact of the hotel operations on the environment and can indicate how successful the business is in sustainable management. The data can also be analysed to find ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, allowing hotels to make informed business management decisions to increase revenue and reduce expenses from energy consumption.

Hotels can also present the database as part of the submissions for a STAR (Sustainable Tourism Acceleration Rating) certification and the Thailand Tourism Awards.

Tourists to can be a part of this effort to help prevent climate change by choosing to stay in any of these hotels where possible.

TAT developed the CF-Hotels online platform in cooperation with the Research Unit for Energy Economic and Ecological Management, Science and Technology Research Institute, Chiang Mai University. The project is carried out under the guidelines of the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organisation.

The CF-Hotels initiative forms part of the TAT’s push towards more sustainable tourism and Net Zero Tourism.
