Experiencing God on Our Journey of Faith

Experiencing God on Our Journey of Faith

my journey from doubt to belief english

  • Be available to God — don't believe our schedule is too full to find faith.
  • Be open to experience God in fresh ways — to encounter him in places and times we don't see as necessarily religious or comfortable.
  • Be hospitable to God and his people — welcoming others in the name of God become ways we welcome the presence of "The Holy" into our lives.
  • Be committed to right living instead of settling for being religious — right living means we are concerned about pleasing God and how we treat others.
  • Be willing to making agenda changes in life — our experiences of God and with God often call us to explore new ideas, new lands, and new people.
  • The Psalms : The collection of the Psalms in our Bible offers us the language of life we can use to address God. There are psalms of joy and sorrow, rejoicing and lament, peace and tumult, praise and anger, confidence and desperation. Spend time in the Psalms to help broaden your vocabulary to address God, and you will also find that God is much bigger and much more gracious than you have previously known. In doing so, you will also discover that the Almighty longs to draw near in every situation of life, not just those rosy, all is great, days of spiritual strength.
  • Matthew : For 19 centuries, Matthew was the gospel of God's people. When we lost Matthew from our regular reading, we lost a precious gift. Matthew was written to help us know and experience Immanuel — God with us on our journey. Matthew reminds us that we can experience God on our journey through the long story of Scripture that ends in Jesus ( Matthew 1:23 ), radical and loving community ( Matthew 18:20 ), compassionate care of those in need ( Matthew 25:40 ), and in walking beside people until Jesus' will transforms them into authentic disciples ( Matthew 28:19-20 ). {Be sure and read the context of these passages for their full impact!} God wants us to experience him as Immanuel, the God whom we can experience in our journey of faith.

How to Overcome Doubt in Faith (3 Biblical Tips)

Do you ever struggle with trusting God or His plan for your life? In today’s post,  Mandy Johnson is sharing how to overcome doubt in faith with three biblical tips perfect for new and seasoned Christians alike.

This woman is praying about how to overcome doubt in faith.

“I trust God, but I also have moments of doubt.”

Have you ever felt this way before?

As Christians, we wholeheartedly want to follow Jesus. But we also have our moments of doubt, right? Those moments when life looks different than we planned; the ones that feel confusing, stressful, and downright hard.

Moments when we know what we’re supposed to think, believe, or do. But moments when we honestly struggle to figure out how to overcome doubt and unbelief.

These moments of doubt cause us to wonder if God is up in Heaven having a way-too-long coffee break–forgetting that we’re down here on earth trying to love our husbands well, get dinner on the table, tell bedtime stories, spend time reading the Bible, and also trust that He’s in control of everything under the sun.

We long for evidence of His faithfulness.

And, if we’re being really honest, life can feel flat-out overwhelming at times!

We know God is for us. We know He is good. But our doubts can creep in like fog through a crack if we aren’t careful.

I deeply understand this tug-of-war and want you to know you’re not alone. The good news is, you can learn how to overcome doubt in faith.

We can take great comfort in knowing that no matter how overwhelmed or doubtful we may feel, His holy hands are always at work in our lives. God is worthy of our trust.

Here are 3 ways you can learn how to overcome doubt in faith today.

1. Admit Your Doubts

There have been times in my faith journey I’ve doubted God’s plans and was afraid to admit my doubts to anyone in my inner circle, let alone my heavenly Father. Faithful people don’t have doubts, right?

The truth is, faithful people do have doubts! You’re not alone if you have a question or two (or twelve) for God.

God doesn’t reject you when you admit your hesitations, fears, and questions, then ask Him for answers. It’s okay if you’re still struggling to figure out how to overcome doubt in faith.

You’re His cherished, loved-beyond-belief daughter. No question or doubt you may have can separate you from His love.

And, whether we feel comfortable with this or not, God already knows our thoughts, questions, and doubts without us ever speaking them. As tempting as it is to want to hide, we can’t!

Shame, fear, and guilt don’t have to hold you back from connecting with God. He wants to hear from you. Give yourself permission to be transparent and honest with yourself, others, and most importantly, with your heavenly Father who knows you better than anyone.

You can’t realistically figure out how to overcome doubt in faith if you aren’t first willing to admit that you have these doubts in the first place.

2. Ask God to Help You Overcome Doubt

One of my favorite stories from the Bible is of the demon-possessed boy and his father in Mark 9.

Mark 9:21-24 tells us:

“Jesus asked the boy’s father, ‘How long has he been like this?’ ‘From childhood,’ he answered. ‘It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.’ ‘If you can?’ said Jesus. ‘Everything is possible for one who believes.’ Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, ‘I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!'”

Can you imagine that scene? Can you imagine if that were your son?

This father was desperate, as most of us would be if we were in his shoes, and had watched his son struggle for years. Now, he truly didn’t know how to overcome doubt in faith. He couldn’t overcome his doubt on his own. He knew He needed Jesus’s help.

But instead of hanging his head low, paralyzed by discouragement and shame because of his doubt, the father responds to Jesus with complete honesty: “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

I don’t know about you, but I love this father’s response. We can confess our beliefs and also prayerfully ask for help in our areas of unbelief.

Jesus makes room for both faith and doubts to co-exist.

In the same way Jesus helped the demon-possessed son and his father, He can help strengthen our areas of unbelief when we ask. He wants to help us learn how to overcome doubt and grow in our faith!

3. Choose to Trust God’s Character

If God is who He says He is, then we can know He remains steady even when our faith wavers. When we feel empty and low on trust, we can remember these truths from scripture about His character:

  • God is love. (1 John 4:8)
  • God is light. (1 John 1:5)
  • God does not change. (James 1:17)
  • His ways are perfect. (Psalm 18:30)
  • He is a God of justice. (Psalm 50:6)
  • God remains faithful to us. (2 Timothy 2:13)

In my moments of doubt, these Scriptures help me focus on God’s unshakable goodness despite shaky circumstances.

The world will throw us reason after reason to doubt His goodness; all we have to do is turn on the news, right?

But Scripture reminds us that “He does not change like shifting shadows” (James 1:17).

As we learn how to overcome doubt in faith, we can trust and know that in an ever-changing world, we can trust a never-changing God.

Ready to Build Up Your Spiritual Health?

If you’ve struggled with doubt, you may find yourself wondering, What is God’s will for my life? Or maybe you haven’t struggled with doubt quite yet, but you’re not sure if your faith would withstand a test!

One of the best ways to stay spiritually healthy, and to keep the faith during times of doubt, is to practice hearing, obeying, and following God’s will, right now.

Scripture: John 20:24-31

Denomination: Evangelical/Non-Denominational

Summary: Thomas is a case study of how we can move from doubt to faith ourselves, and assist others in making the same spiritual journey.

The Journey from Doubt to Faith

John 20:24-31 ; 21:12

When you and I woke up this morning, we didn’t wake up thinking that Jesus of Nazareth is still buried in a tomb in Jerusalem. We didn’t wake up in a world where death and the grave appeared to have been victorious.

But remember that on that first Resurrection Sunday so many years ago, the followers of Jesus didn’t wake up with that same assurance. They all thought he was dead.

That’s important to grasp if we are to understand the story we’re looking at today.

After Jesus’ arrest, trial and crucifixion the disciples are broken-hearted, confused, wondering what to do next.

The gospels record that they are cringing in locked rooms, afraid they will be next, too afraid to show their faces in public, even for a funeral.

The chances of detection are too high. You’ll remember that just a few days earlier three different people had picked Peter out of the crowd and announced that he was one of Jesus’ followers. Those encounters took place at night, when it’s harder to recognize a face, and now it’s Sunday morning. So they send a couple of women alone to care for the body.

Anointing a body with spices and ointments was a last gesture of love and respect to the dead, and meant to cover the smell of the rapidly decaying body for as long as possible.

None of them were expecting the resurrection. But Jesus appears first to Mary of Magdala, and then that same evening to the apostles, huddled in a room where the doors are locked and the windows shuttered. “Shalom - Peace!” he tells them, and then he shows them his nail-pierced hands, the wound in his side. They laugh and cry together! He breathes on them and says, “receive the Holy Spirit!”

The disciples are overjoyed! Hope is rekindled! Life once more has meaning and is worth living, because Jesus is alive! It’s a new day for them – well, for ten of them. Judas is no more, and Thomas. . .. where is Thomas?

John 20:24-25 Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.

"Not with them" - different people handle grief in differing ways. Some like to find comfort in one another’s company. Others creep into a hidden corner to be by themselves.

Thomas had a lot to sort out - news of his friend Judas’ death by suicide,; and then Jesus’ death - his mentor, his master, his rabbi, the one he had given up everything to follow - all in same weekend!

Jesus had picked him – even though he was an uneducated fisherman – to be his disciple. It was the break of a lifetime! Thomas had staked the rest of his life on following Jesus – leaving his family, his business, and everything else to be his disciple. Now Jesus was dead.

Thomas had gone away and cried, and cried, and cried. It didn’t make any sense. He was as depressed as a person could get.

When he eventually returned from wherever he was, the others filled him in on what had happened in his absence.

25So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.”

Evidently Thomas was a pessimist by nature – he could always imagine the worst. E.g. - Lazarus was dead, Jesus told us about it, his response ( John 11:16 ), was "Let’s go, too, that we may die with him!"

Also seems that he was a little slow to grasp spiritual realities. - Thursday night when Jesus was having what we refer to as "the last Passover Supper" with his disciples, he said ( John 14:1-4 ): "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going."

Thomas wondered, “What was Jesus talking about? His father, Joseph, had long been dead and buried. His mother’s house was a small mud affair in the shopkeepers section of a little insignificant Galilean town called Nazareth. What in the world was he talking about?”

Thomas looked at John; he shrugged. He looked at Peter, but Peter was still thinking about what Jesus had just told him about denying him three times before the rooster crowed, so Thomas said: "Whoa, Jesus! Back up here. We don’t even know where you’re talking about going, so how can we possibly know the way?"

Life Unleashed: Solutions for a Balanced and Happy Existence

From Doubt to Faith: A Journey to Discovering God’s Existence

Table of contents, introduction, what causes doubt, seeking answers, the power of faith, overcoming obstacles, finding comfort in community.

Embarking on a journey from doubt to faith is a profound and transformative experience. Many of us have grappled with uncertainty and skepticism when it comes to the existence of a higher power. However, through introspection, exploration, and open-mindedness, individuals can discover a deep-seated belief in God’s existence.

Doubt can stem from various sources, including personal experiences, conflicting beliefs, and societal influences. It is natural to question the unknown and seek validation through evidence and reasoning. Doubt can also arise from challenging circumstances or periods of adversity that test one’s faith.

In the quest for truth and understanding, individuals often turn to religious texts, philosophical teachings, and discussions with spiritual leaders. Engaging in meaningful dialogue and reflection can provide clarity and insights that bridge the gap between doubt and faith. Exploring different perspectives and interpretations can lead to profound revelations and a sense of spiritual enlightenment.

Faith is a powerful force that transcends rational thinking and empirical evidence. It is an intrinsic belief in the unseen and the unknown, guiding individuals through life’s challenges and uncertainties. Faith instills hope, resilience, and a sense of purpose in the face of adversity, offering solace and comfort in times of need.

Overcoming doubt requires courage, persistence, and a willingness to confront one’s uncertainties head-on. It is a process of introspection and self-discovery that involves questioning deeply held beliefs and embracing new perspectives. By acknowledging and addressing doubts, individuals can cultivate a renewed sense of faith and spiritual connection.

Seeking support from like-minded individuals and participating in religious or spiritual communities can foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie. Connecting with others who share similar beliefs and values can provide encouragement, guidance, and a sense of unity in faith. Community engagement can strengthen one’s spiritual journey and offer a sense of fulfillment and purpose.

  • How can I overcome doubt and strengthen my faith?
  • What role does introspection play in the journey from doubt to faith?
  • How do religious texts and teachings influence belief in God’s existence?
  • Is it normal to have moments of doubt and skepticism?
  • How can community support enhance one’s spiritual journey?

The journey from doubt to faith is a deeply personal and transformative experience that requires self-reflection, open-mindedness, and a willingness to embrace the unknown. By exploring different perspectives, seeking answers, and finding comfort in community, individuals can discover a profound belief in God’s existence. Through faith, we find solace, purpose, and a sense of connection to something greater than ourselves.

Everything in today's world carries within it what makes us doubt and believe at the same time!..this "science" and its wide-ranging progress may tempt some to look at religion as if in its absence something from ancient superstitions.. and some may see in it a sure and direct reason for the ability of The One Creator, the Mighty and Sublime, is an application of the words of God Almighty, “Only among His servants are scholars who fear God.” Here we find in the picture doubt and certainty born from the same point, but after that they are two paths that will never meet. of conditions. The journey between the two extremes requires a strong will, an enlightened mind, and a sound heart.. It may then require a great ability to explain, argue, and describe in order to show what happened in the upheaval and equilibrium that followed, and this is what the physician thinker had

From Doubt to Freedom: My Journey into Buddhism

my journey from doubt to belief english

TLDR: Doubt can eat you up. How do we deal with it when it is the core of our identity? Anonymous shares his experience in a non-Buddhist family and how it led him to the Dhamma.

Editor’s note: Talking about conversion can be a touchy subject. At HOL, we believe that one should be free to choose whatever faith you choose to pursue. There are various challenges on our religious journey and we are glad anonymous shared his struggles openly as it is not easy to do so.

Introduction

Hi there, my name is Anonymous and I am currently a practising Buddhist. As the title goes, this was not initially the case, and I would like to share more about that here.

Being born in a family of ardent believers of a monotheistic faith naturally made me fairly religious for the first 18 years of my life. Hence, to get to my faith in Buddhism, I had to go through the tedious process of:

1) struggling with the truth of the religion that I was born into (let’s call this my inherited religion or “IR”), 2) dropping my IR, 3) exploring the alternatives out there; and finally 4) ending up with Buddhism.

If that sounds interesting to you, do stay with me! Note that ‘Divine’ is used interchangeably with the concept of a supreme, all-powerful, deity (aka God). In addition, this article is meant to document my journey into the Dhamma and should not be taken as an ‘absolute’ comparison against monotheistic religions. Everyone is free to follow the faith that aligns most with them and brings them contentment.

1. Faith and Doubt

my journey from doubt to belief english

It was pretty challenging to practise my IR as you have to pray frequently each day. This was especially tough when I was in school, having to find time during breaks to fulfil my obligations. Regardless, I tried.

As much as I was fervent in the belief, the more I tried to understand the faith, the more questions I had. I studied the history of my IR, learnt its language, and memorised the scriptures in a formalised institution.

In my attempt to understand the religion, I noted internal inconsistencies in the holy book and encountered teachings which didn’t sit well with my personal ethics. I struggled with accepting things without understanding their rationale.

The issue with that was that my IR demanded full surrender and belief.

The more I tried to learn about my IR, the more the distance of doubt grew for me to have faith. Ironic, isn’t it?

What is faith to you? In my simplistic definition, faith is the acceptance of a claim without sufficient evidence. I felt that it was intellectually dishonest to accept something despite a lack of evidence. I would reason (with my God-given intellect) that it is unethical to do that to yourself, as it equates to self-deception.

Self-deception is unethical because it equates to wilful recklessness in dedicating the scarce resource we call “life” to potential non-truths.

With the doubts that I had, I simply could not believe it. The two values of intellectual honesty and faith clashed. Think about it:

1) Value #1 is faith, the acceptance of a claim regardless of evidence. Faith in that claim implies that I did not consider the validity of the evidence.

2) Value #2 is intellectual honesty, the acceptance of a claim only when sufficient evidence is presented. Non-acceptance (not rejection) of the claim occurs when there is insufficient evidence.

I started to value intellectual honesty more as the debates continued in my mind.

2. Accepting doubt

Mind you, disbelief in my IR was punishable by an afterlife of hell. It would make my current life hell, too, given the level of pressure in the community and in my family.

By the time I was 17, the doubts that I’ve shared earlier would serve as my one-way ticket to eternal torment. It was therefore important for me to save my soul.

My last-ditch attempt at salvation was to will myself towards belief. I tried to suppress my doubts, much like preventing the escape of steam from a boiling kettle. I wished and prayed for those doubts to go away in the hopes that the divine would reveal himself. The pressure of doubt continued to build up the more I fought against it.

In the midst of my efforts sprang a realisation—I was literally trying to trade my piety, reverence, and mortal life for a better afterlife. Those drives which were previously subtle became clear as day. I reached a point where following this belief was more of a transaction than a religion.

Although I had no choice but to doubt, I do have a say in whether I would acknowledge it, or wilfully ignore it. So I chose the truth, accepting that I didn’t believe it. In choosing myself, I left the Divine behind.

Acknowledging any doubts that we have can be challenging but it is self-affirmative. The process does not end there. Investigate them!

3. Exploring truths

my journey from doubt to belief english

And so, I left the decades-long conditioning in a finger-snap. Apostasy was instantaneous upon that realisation, but it was also the culmination of a gradual struggle with doubt. The remainder of my hopes for the truth of my IR was dropped. A sense of loss followed, perhaps insecurity or guilt arising from tasting the sacrilegious freedom of self-acceptance.

Despite that, I could see that those were residual emotions which did not connect with the insight gleaned. Those emotions gradually ceased, and life and death were no longer relegated to an “almighty” concept in the great everywhere.

“Now is my chance”, I said to myself. I decided to redesign my life, hitting the “f5” on the keyboard of my being, erasing any inherited indoctrination by questioning my own ethics, worldview, and how I lived my life.

What an uncomfortable process! It felt like I was literally killing parts of a personality which I had built all my life—but alas, parts which were never “me” to begin with. (That is probably a topic for another day, however.)

In that journey of apostasy and agnosticism, I explored the religions of the world. If there is a Truth out there, let me find it. If it is true, it will not be hidden for long. A sincere God will not forsake a sincere seeker, would he (or she)? This aspiration grew in the newfound field of freedom.

Introspection is key to living an authentic life. In ensuring that the views we hold are aligned with our values, it may bring insight to reflect on the following;

  • What are some of your unquestioned beliefs contributing to your core worldview which you hold to be true?
  • Do they align with your values?
  • If that belief is untested, and not aligned with your values, how does it feel to drop them? – Investigate further if there is resistance.

4. Finding the practice

my journey from doubt to belief english

I explored Abrahamic and Indic religions and, as you may have guessed, Buddhism. While some of those teachings, being new to me, had their own charm, Buddhism was compelling to me as it encouraged one to question and test any claims brought forth.

The Kalama Sutta states;

–   … don’t go by… traditions, by scripture… –   When you know for yourselves that ‘these qualities are skilful; these qualities are blameless; these qualities are praised by the wise; these qualities, when adopted & carried out, lead to welfare & to happiness’ — –   then you should enter & remain in them.

In short, it does not encourage blind faith but empowers authentic acceptance through experiencing the truth. It is intellectually honest.

The Buddha was known to actively encourage enthusiastic followers to first inquire before converting to Buddhism.

“Householder, you should act after careful consideration. It’s good for well-known people such as yourself to act after careful consideration.” – MN 56 , Upali Sutta

I tested the teachings and applied, and learnt and applied, iteratively.

The mutually supportive practices of cultivating kindness and awareness were making a clear change in my life. Being kind was a nice thing—to simply care for others and enjoy the naturally arising warmth in a smile, what a joy!

What of morality ? It is expressed as a life of morality that is not just lived because the divine says it is right. It is not a demand, but a gift to see it for yourself!

When we live ethically, people around us are at ease, and consequently, we are gladdened. When we do no harm, our conscience is clear, and we are at ease—with ourselves (this is observable when I meditate, where I am my only company). Living ethically is a gift from me to others, and to myself.

Heaven used to be a subtle expectation, where my kindness and good behaviour came with terms and conditions attached—but no more. This way of life is pleasant. Each step on the path yields fruit to be tasted almost instantaneously, inviting one to take the next step. The more I enjoyed the process, the deeper down the Dhamma rabbit hole I went.

I gradually “became” a Buddhist, without even realising it.

Now, if you have tolerated me this far, I must come clean that I do have unresolved questions relating to the doctrine. However, taking the guidance of the Kalamas and the exhortation of the Simsapa Sutta (which this page is inspired by), I hold the handful of truths that have been tried and tested.

In this journey, it seems to me that having faith is more like falling in love. It is an invitation which calls you on. You do not beckon it. And in the gradual calling, I grew to notice momentary suffering, saw its attachments, and sometimes, if luck would have it, its dissolution.

Thanks for joining me in this journey from doubt to tested faith. 🙂

  • In this book, I address the minds. This book lets us know a lot about our souls and bodies and the connections between them. It also shows the absolute power of God and how He is present in everything around us and within us as well.It shows us how ancient assumptions are being challenged in nearly every area of human life, not just theology and spirituality. It proposes a four-stage model of the development of faith in which questions and doubts are not the enemy of faith, but rather a gateway to a more mature and fruitful type of faith.

  3. A Journey From Doubt to Faith -Trusting God No Matter What!

A journey is taking definite steps to begin recovery, to overcome all issues. My journey from doubt to faith started when I loved to read at an early age of seven; that when I was remarkably impressed after reading so many examples of doubt in the Bible. I remember thinking for the bible to include so many examples of double in it.

  4. "Embracing Doubt as a Path to Deeper Faith"

The struggles and doubts we face on our faith journey are a natural and inevitable part of spiritual growth and development. It is crucial to remember that seeking truth and understanding, although accompanied by challenges, is an ultimately fulfilling and enriching endeavor. These hurdles only serve to fortify and deepen our faith and resolve.

  5. Any thoughts on Mustapha Mahmoud's "My journey from doubt to belief

When he talks about the soul, he tries to argue that thinking and memory aren't located in the brain but the soul. And the brain is just a receiver of memory and thoughts from the soul. Then, he says that his proof of that is when someone gets brain damage in the speech center, he doesn't forget the words but just lose the ability to speak.

  7. Experiencing God on Our Journey of Faith

His life's outcome also reminds us that the journey is worth the cost, effort, and challenges. By the end of his life, Abraham was known as a friend of God (2 Chronicles 20:7; James 2:23). His example teaches us that faith is a life-long journey. That journey should lead us to a deeper, more meaningful, relationship with God and with others.

  8. How to Overcome Doubt in Faith (3 Biblical Tips)

    3. Choose to Trust God's Character. If God is who He says He is, then we can know He remains steady even when our faith wavers. When we feel empty and low on trust, we can remember these truths from scripture about His character: God is love. (1 John 4:8) God is light. (1 John 1:5) God does not change.

  9. When Doubt Eclipses Faith: Learning to Fight for Spiritual Sight

The biblical life of faith in this world has always been a sojourn to "a better country, that is, a heavenly one" ( Hebrews 11:16 ). It has always been true that if we hope in God in this life only, we should be pitied ( 1 Corinthians 15:19 ). And in fact, as Asaph experienced, hoping in God in this life only leads just to losing hope in God.

  10. By Searching: My Journey Through Doubt Into Faith

By Searching: My Journey Through Doubt Into Faith. Kindle Edition. Isobel Miller gave up God for worldly pursuits.
