10 Activities & Attractions to Explore in Downtown Nashville, Tennessee

N ashville is one of the most iconic cities in the United States. Well known for Broadway bars and the Country Music Hall of Fame, there’s a good reason it’s known as “Music City.”

But that’s not all this city is known for. While these might be two can’t-miss attractions that should be on your Nashville itinerary, there are plenty of things to do that can keep you busy for days, if not weeks.

Here are ten must-see attractions you should add to your Nashville itinerary, no matter how much time you spend in this iconic city!

Spend Time on Broadway

Let’s get the most popular activity out of the way. Broadway is hands down one of the most fun places to enjoy when visiting downtown Nashville. You’ll find rooftop bars stacked on top of other bars.

In the spring, summer, and fall, windows will open, and live music spills into the streets. The city streets come alive, and the feel is all its own. If you are visiting Nashville, you are visiting Broadway.

Country Music Hall of Fame

Founded in 1961 by the Country Music Association (CMA), the Country Music Hall of Fame is another popular attraction for any Nashville-bound traveler. You’ll experience a variety of exhibits, including “Sing Me Back Home,” which will walk you through country music’s story from the beginning to how it’s evolved today. While this exhibition is permanent, many other exhibitions rotate seasonally to tour.

Visit the State Capitol Building

Construction on the state capitol building in downtown Nashville started in 1859. While on site, you’ll find statues honoring Presidents Andrew Jackson and Andrew Johnson. Former President Andrew Jackson has deep ties to Tennessee, including his home called “The Hermitage,” which isn’t to be confused with the historic hotel downtown. The capitol welcomes both self-guided and guided tours.

Explore the Gulch

Once upon a time, the Gulch was an industrial area. The train still runs through the heart of the Gulch, but now you can see skyscrapers, upscale apartments, and many different restaurants to explore in this revitalized part of downtown Nashville.

If you are looking for somewhere to experience food, the Gulch has just about any type of food you can ask for. If steak is your thing, Kanye Prime Steakhouse is a personal favorite.

Stay at The Hermitage Hotel

As the managing editor of Places to Travel , I recently completed a stay at The Hermitage Hotel , a historic hotel in downtown Nashville. This hotel is steeped in history and is a perfect place to stay for anyone looking for an overnight getaway or a week-long stay.

The hotel was built in 1910 and became Nashville’s original “Million-dollar hotel.” This hotel has something for everyone, from the comfortable rooms to the incredible dining experience. It’s rumored that Jimmy Hoffa had a Teamster’s meeting in the men’s bathroom, which is a must-visit while staying at the hotel.

Tour the Frist Art Museum

A former post office converted into an art museum, the Frist hosts rotating exhibitions that include everything from Dr. Seuss to ancient Egyptian treasures. The Frist is a quick walk from many popular foodie destinations in the Gulch and can be a great afternoon activity after eating your share in some of downtown’s best eateries.

Visit the Parthenon at Centennial Park

The Parthenon at Centennial Park is a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon in Athens, Greece. While you may not get the experience of being in the Mediterranean while visiting Centennial Park, it doesn’t make the Parthenon any less majestic as an experience.

The Parthenon was built in 1897 as part of the Centennial Exposition. You can tour the exterior of the building, as well as the interior, which hosts rotating art exhibitions in its galleries.

Johnny Cash Museum

Johnny Cash is one of country music’s most iconic figures. When visiting the Johnny Cash Museum in downtown Nashville , you’ll journey through his life and career through several features. You’ll get an up-close view of his life and career from start to finish.

You can tour several exhibits, including displaying some of his memorabilia. There are audiovisuals and interactive displays. There’s also a gift shop to commemorate your visit!

Catch a Predators Game at Bridgestone Arena

You may have been to a hockey game in your lifetime, but catching a Predators Hockey Game is unlike any other hockey experience you’ve been to. Typically, a different music city star or music group will sing the Star Spangled Banner before each game.

The crowd chants are unreal, and the crowd shows up for its team every game. Bring some earplugs, because it gets loud! Watch out for the catfish that may make their way onto the ice during the game!

Enjoy the Nashville Farmer’s Market

Near Bicentennial Mall Park, the Nashville Farmer’s Market is a bustling hub of food and fun. The best reason for visiting is the abundance of local, organically grown produce. Farmers from surrounding areas set up “outdoor farm sheds” or stalls, selling fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, and cut flowers.

Depending on seasonality, you can find anything from a fresh bouquet of lavender to a full bushel of strawberries. While shopping, you can experience artisanal foods prepared by several different outdoor vendors.

You can also head inside to the indoor market house, where you can enjoy many different restaurants and shops to fill your afternoon with different tastes, spirits, and confections.

The World’s Biggest Recording Studio

Unlike any city in the world, music is deeply rooted in the heart and soul of Nashville. The city’s earliest settlers arrived with little more than instruments in their hands and a song in their heart. Perhaps you’ve heard the names: Dolly Parton, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, Zac Brown, Jimi Hendrix and Johnny Cash. They followed a dream and together, they paved the way for the dreamers that followed. From the early days of the 20th century with its fiddles and banjos to the flash and pomp of the 1960s and 70s glory days, to today’s polished pop country and rootsy, underground sounds, Nashville keeps turning out the hits and proving it deserves to be called Music City.

This tour was fantastic. Starlene did an amazing job of pointing out highlights of sites, food, healthcare and Nashville in general. For a new visitor, she told us about things to help us plan our time. There is so much food, beverage, and music for most along with sports. Oh and did I mention music?? There is more than just country music. Many genres are throughout and you hear a sample of many along the tour.

city tours nashville tn

It was easy to use and had plenty of great stops. The drivers were safe and knowledgeable about the city. I will definitely tell friends and family to use the tour bus, it worked perfectly for us!

city tours nashville tn

We had an amazing tour guide who showed us not only all the sites from the filming of “Nashville”, but also many other interesting places in town. We did get to see the Bluebird Cafe, even though it was not listed on the Sunday tour, which was a bonus for us. It was a very enjoyable tour with lots of interesting highlights of the show. Now we need to go back and watch it again.

city tours nashville tn

This was our first trip to Nashville and we were looking for a fun way to get an overview of the city. This tour did just that. Our guide, Starlene, was very knowledgable and friendly. Our young children (3 years old) enjoyed the bus ride. It gave us a better sense of the city and some great ideas for things to do during the rest of our time there.

city tours nashville tn

We decided at the last minute to make a reservation for an Opryland Tour. Bill, our guide, was awesome - on time, friendly and always keeping an eye on our group. We had a great time and would recommend Gray Line to others for organized, affordable, professional and fun tours!

Country Singer Alan Jackson Just Picked Up a Gorgeous Nashville Home for $3M

Singer-songwriter Alan Jackson recently nabbed a new nest in Nashville, TN .

The country crooner laid out $3 million for the 6,003-square-foot, five-bedroom, 5.5-bath dwelling.

This newly built abode hit the market last spring for $3.7 million and received multiple price cuts before Jackson picked it up in January.

Previously, the musician owned a palatial property in nearby Franklin, TN . He put it on the market in 2020 for $23 million and reportedly sold it the following year for $19 million.

Modern mansion

Situated in the desirable enclave of West Meade, this modern manse is a study in neutral elegance. Large, bright rooms are adorned with simple, quiet shades that showcase the home’s lines.

A stunning kitchen offers a large island with seating plus glass-front cabinets and an adjoining scullery. Fourteen-foot ceilings grace the primary suite, which has space for a seating area and sports pretty views of the lush lawn. Meanwhile, the spa-style main bath includes a large soaking tub.

A home office, formal dining room, and a covered porch complete the layout.

Outside, there’s more than an acre for pets and kids to roam. A three-car garage completes the package.

Jackson is a prolific songwriter and recording artist who has released 21 studio albums. He’s a member of the Grand Ole Opry and the winner of two Grammys and 16 Country Music Awards.

  • The nonprofit organization has been offering the home tour for 19 years.
  • Participants in this year's tour included Prima at Paseo South Gulch, Pullman at Gulch Union and several private homes.

Rooftop views. Resort-style pools. Sprawling vacation rentals.

Several luxurious homes and rental properties were showcased last week at the Nashville Downtown Partnership's 2024 Home Tour. The nonprofit's yearly event brings in visitors from all over Middle Tennessee to take a peek inside downtown Nashville residences.

The home tour is meant to promote downtown living, share design tips and offer participants a chance to see the city from new angles. Rental apartments from the brand new Prima building at Paseo South Gulch were featured on this year's tour. The mixed use development on 8th Avenue was built by SomeraRoad.

A new building called Pullman at Gulch Union showcased model units for luxury condos soon to hit the market. Prices for those condominiums start at $400,000.

According to the Nashville Downtown Partnership, 17,630 people currently live downtown in an average home size of 813 square feet. More than 4,000 units are currently under construction and at least 13,000 are in planning stages.
