play classic solitaire
What is classic solitaire? Well, when generally when someone says the word "solitaire", this version of the game is the first thing that comes to mind.
Maybe you're old school enough that you were taught how to play this awesome game with an actual card deck . Crazy, right?
However it is that you came to learn to play this game, you probably don't need me to teach you the rules. But hey, in case you do, then read on.
classic solitaire rules
The object of classic solitaire is to move all of the cards into the 4 piles in the upper right: the foundation piles.
The foundation piles are ordered from Ace to King (i.e., Ace, 2, 3, … Jack, Queen, King), and must be arranged by suit (e.g. only Diamonds can go in one pile).
But of course, nothing is so simple as moving cards into the foundation piles without making some other moves first.
In order to win at classic solitaire, you'll have to master using the stock and the tableau piles to your advantage.
There are 7 tableau piles. Each has a single face up card. The left most pile has a single face up card and zero face down cards. The next pile has 1 face up, and 1 face down, the next has 1 face up, and 2 face down, and so on.
Whenever you uncover a face down card, you immediately turn it over to reveal it. And how do you uncover face down cards? By moving the cards on top.
Valid moves in the tableau pile are by alternating color (e.g. red, black, red) and by descending order (e.g. King, Queen, … 3, 2).
Depending upon the rules you play with, whenever you free up a blank space, you may place a King or you may place any card you wish to. If you wish to use the second option, then check out the Options menu and look for the option that allows any card on a tableau pile.
Similarly, there is some flexibility with how cards are drawn from the stock pile (the top left pile of cards). The default is to only flip 1 card over at a time. I like this option the most, however, if you want to go the traditional route, you can change the option so that 3 cards are flipped at a time.
That's about all there is to a game of classic solitaire. However, the devil is in the details, so it can take a lifetime to master.
We hope you enjoy playing!

How to play classic solitaire.
Classic solitaire (also known as Klondike Solitaire) is the game that many simply refer to as "solitaire". Klondike is by far the most popular version of Solitaire, though there are many variations. If you did not realize there is more than one type of solitaire game, the game you know as Solitaire is likely to be Klondike.
Classic Solitaire is a game of sorting cards. You move cards between columns in an attempt to put them in order into 4 piles of cards separated by suit.
Classic Solitaire Layout
The game begins with 28 cards dealt into columns. This is known as the tableau. Seven cards are dealt in a row-one card face up, then six more continuing to the right face down. Next, deal a card face up on the second pile, then one more in each pile facing down. Continue in this fashion, dealing one less card each time, until you have seven piles that start on the left with one card and increase by one card with each column from left to right. The top card on each pile is facing up. Each time an Ace appears face up, place it in a row at the top. These are the foundations. The remaining 24 cards are placed in the top left of the game screen as a stock pile you can draw from when you need additional cards.
The columns in a game of Classic Solitaire are the tableau. They are the primary play area of the game. You are attempting to move cards from the columns into the foundations on the top right of the game screen. Each foundation must be built up by suit and sequence from Ace to the King.
Move any cards you can to the foundations. On the tableau you can build on the face up cards, building down in alternating colors. In order to move a card in a column, it must be turned face up. To turn a card face up, it must become the bottom card in the column, so all the cards below the face down card must be moved into a different column. Every time you move a face up card, you turn up the card beneath it. When there are on more face down cards in a pile and you move the face up card, you can fill the space with an available King.
After dealing, the Stock Pile is what remains of the deck after the cards forming the Tableau. You can deal cards one at a time face up. Once you have dealt out all the cards, you can reset the stock pile. There is not a limit to the number of times you can deal out the cards.
The goal of Classic Solitaire is to build all the cards on to the foundations at the top of the game screen. All cards must be face up in the suit piles to win. All four Kings will be at the top of the foundations.

How to Play Solitaire
Solitaire is a single-player card game in which you try to arrange all of your cards into foundation piles. While “Solitaire” typically refers to classic Klondike Solitaire , there are many versions and difficulty levels such Klondike Solitaire Turn 3 and FreeCell . The game was first known, and is still called "Patience," reflecting the patience needed to win a game.
On Solitaired, you can play unlimited online Solitaire games for free on your phone, desktop, or in full screen.
Solitaire Setup
Setting up Solitaire is simple. There four basic piles that you use to play the game:
- The tableau: The main area of gameplay is the tableau, which is made up of 7 columns of 28 cards laid out from left to right. The first column consists of one card, and the subsequent columns have an additional card until the last column has 7. The last card in each column is face-up, while the rest remain face-down until revealed.
- The stockpile: The remaining 24 cards, placed face-down, become the stockpile, which you draw from 1 at a time when you run out of moves on the tableau.
- The waste pile (or talon): Any cards you flip from the stockpile move face-up into the waste pile. The face-up card that is revealed can be used to make plays.
- The foundation piles: These are the 4 piles you arrange your cards into. Each pile is organized by suit, and cards are placed in ascending order, starting with an Ace and ending with a King.
Solitaire Rules
Arrange cards by making moves according to these rules:
- Move face-up cards only. A face-down card in the tableau cannot be overturned and played until the face-up card on top of it is removed. If you play a face-up card from the waste pile, it will reveal another face-up card that can then be played on the foundation piles or tableau columns.
- Move a card from one tableau column to another if the card is the alternate color and one rank lower. For example, a 6 of Clubs can be placed on top of a 7 of Diamonds or Hearts.
- Move a group of sequenced cards. To do so, the highest-ranking card in the group must be placed on a card that is an alternate higher and one rank higher.
- Reveal face-down cards in tableau columns. Once a face-up card on top of a face-down card is moved, it will be turned face-up and available to play.
- Build foundation piles. Begin foundation piles with an Ace then add cards of the same suit to each pile in ascending order. In the Spades foundation, the next card after the Ace of Spades, for example, will be a 2 of Spades.
- Place Kings into empty columns. Only Kings or a group of sequenced cards with a King can be played in empty columns.
- Flip cards from the stock pile when you get stuck. If you can’t make a move with the cards on the tableau, flip a card from the stock pile. Continue flipping until you can move a card to the tableau or foundation..
- Redeal the stockpile. Once all of the stock pile cards have been placed into the waste pile, you can click the waste pile so that the cards flip face-down back into the stockpile to be used again.
Watch our instructional video here , or learn more with our guide on Solitaire .
Strategies to Win Solitaire
Increase your chances of winning by using the following Solitaire strategies:
- Focus on revealing face-down cards. Surfacing as many cards as possible increases the options you’ll have for making moves and allows you to plan ahead.
- Turn over the first card from the stock pile before you make any moves. You should consider the first card in the stock pile as part of your option set to make your initial moves. For example, you may find that the first card from the stock pile can create a sequence, which can then help reveal another card.
- Check out the tableau before making a move. When you first start the game, quickly check out the tableau in conjunction with the card that is face-up in your waste pile and assess the moves you can make.
- Play Aces and 2s right away. Get your foundation piles started as soon as possible. If any Aces are playable, move them to your foundation piles. As soon as 2s are available, play those as well.
- Move cards from the larger tableau columns first. The larger tableau columns have more face-down cards you will need. Many of these cards may be important to sequence and solve the game. It's important to focus on revealing these cards first if possible, as the shorter tableau columns have fewer cards and therefore are easier to surface.
- Use face-up cards on the tableau first before moving them to the foundation piles. While it sounds counterintuitive, you may need these cards to make moves and reveal face-down cards. You never need an Ace or 2 in your tableau, but you might need other ranks to build on a sequence. So if you reveal a 4 of Diamonds that could go into the Diamond foundation pile, check to make sure it can’t be used in a sequence or elsewhere that can help reveal another card.
- Use cards from the foundation piles, if necessary. For the same reasons described in the bullet above, you might need to replay foundation cards into the tableau to open more options for play.
- Clear tableau columns for kings. Whether you have a king showing or not, try to clear tableau columns so that you can fill them with Kings when a King becomes available.
- Use the hint or undo button. You can use our hint button to help you identify which cards to move or our undo button to try different moves.
Be sure to check out our strategy guide to learn all the ways to win.
How Difficult is Solitaire?

Classic Solitaire Overview
Classic Solitaire (known only as simply “Solitaire” by some, and “Klondike Solitaire” by others) is a crazy popular card game that is won by moving all cards in a single deck from the tableau to the foundation piles.
Classic Solitaire Rules
So how do you play this game?
The layout of the card game table is fairly straightforward. Though you might not have heard these terms before, a game of classic is composed of the following items:
- the tableau
- the foundations
- the stock pile
- the discard pile (also known as the talon)
Initially, the foundation piles and the discard pile will be empty.
If you are playing by hand, you start by shuffling your deck of cards fully, then start building the tableau. For the tableau, begin by dealing the first card up then place 6 more cards face down (for a grand total of 7 stacks on the main playing area (the tableau)). On the next go round, you place a face-up card on tableau stack #2, then 5 more face down cards on the remaining stacks. You repeat this process until you’ve placed your last face up card on the 7th tableau stack. Of course, if you’re playing on the Classic Solitaire site, all of this is taken care of for you automatically when you start a new game.
If you are playing by hand, after you have placed the appropriate number of cards on the tableau piles, you will have cards left over. These cards will be used for the stock pile. The traditional rules of classic solitaire generally have you deal 3 cards at a time from the stock, where only the top most card is playable at any given time. However, many (and possibly even most) online solitaire games let you deal 1 card at a time, making the game friendlier and easier to win. On the Classic Solitaire site, you can choose to deal 1 card at a time or 3, whatever you want. Also, in some versions of classic/klondike, the number of times you can go through the stock pile is limited. Most games give you an unlimited number of redeals which is the default in this game, though you can configure the number of redeals in the game preferences.
So now that everything is laid out on the game board appropriately, you can begin playing.
In Classic Solitaire, there are 2 main sets of rules:
- the rules for the foundations
- the rules for the tableau
On the tableau, cards are arranged in descending order (meaning King, Queen, Jack, 10, etc) in alternating color (e.g. a black 7 can be placed on a red 8).
There are 4 foundation piles (initially empty), one for each suit of Ace. As soon as you find an Ace, you immediately move it to a foundation pile. Unlike the tableau, foundation piles are built in ascending order (i.e., Ace, 2, 3, etc) and by the same suit (so for example, only diamonds are allowed in one of the 4 foundation piles).
The basic strategy in this classic card game is to uncover your turned over cards as soon as possible. If you have the option of using a card from the tableau or a card form the stock pile, you will almost always want to use the tableau card.
One additional strategy that is often overlooked is that you can strategically move cards from the foundation piles back to the tableau. However, some online games do not allow this. Basically, for those versions of the game, once a card is in one of the foundation piles, it is locked into place. But assuming you’re playing a game that allows this type of move, let me give you a simple scenario where this move could come in handy. You’ve got a black 4 and a black 2, both on the tableau. The black 2 has facedown cards underneath it, so obviously, it would be advantageous if you were able to move the black 2. You’ve already been through the stock pile and you know that there’s no red 3 in sight. But wait! There’s a shiny red 3 in one of the foundation piles. So you move that red 3 onto the black 4 et voilà , you can now move that black 2 onto the red 3, thus uncovering whatever was underneath the black 2.
Sometimes moves like these are the difference between winning and losing a game.
When you are able to empty a tableau pile, you have a few options. The classic rules for Klondike say that only Kings can be placed in empty tableau spots. So this means you can either transfer an individual King card to the empty spot or a valid sequence of cards starting with a King to the empty spot (e.g. black King, red Queen, black Jack, etc). On the Solitaire Classic site, the default option is that only Kings can be placed in empty tableau piles. But you can choose this option or the option of allowing any card to go on a blank spot. Feel free to play however you want. Or hey, if you run into a dead end in a game, and your only option is to move a non-King card onto an empty space, feel free to change the rules on the fly. Is this cheating? That’s up to you. We feel you should have the freedom to play solitaire in whatever way makes it the most fun.

However, many (and possibly even most) online solitaire games let you deal 1 card at a time, making the game friendlier and easier to win.
