Has anyone used Collette Tours?

' class=

It's sadly lacking in wildlife. One full day on the road getting from Johannesburg to the doorstep of Kruger Park - a day that does include a drivealong of the lovely Panorama Route . Then a day in Kruger, "in search of the Big 5" (according to the itinerary). Then back to the hotel.

The next day is a killer. Breakfast. Drive back to Johannesburg to the airport and board a flight to Port Elizabeth .

The itinerary would have been much better in my opinion to have flown to Port Elizabeth - not driven to Kruger. The guests could have had two days in the very good Addo Elephant Park. Then get on with the trip.

But - when you are selling to an overseas customer, Kruger has the 'name'. Addo sounds pretty one-dimensional. Which it is not.

Final word. Price is good for the trip as it is. As with all trips that try to do it all, there's a lot of time on your fanny in the bus, or whatever vehicle they use.

How do I know? I speak from experience. I operated Holy Land bus tours before I discovered Africa!

I just returned from this exact tour and have to say I had a great time.

September/October was great tempatures were warm but not ridiculously hot. For the morning of the safari you will need warm clothes to start as it is cool but did warm up later in the day. Rainy season had not yet started so milaria wasn't an issue. Runners were a must for a couple of days, the rest of the time summer sandals worked well. a mosquito net is not all needed as the hotels were all 4-5 stars just like in canada/usa aside from in Kruger park, it was nice but not as nice as the rest as the area is a little more isolated. At all locations we went the tap water is drinkable aside from Kruger it is not recommended even though it can be. Every place gave you a bottle of water each day and the tour gave you one bottle on the long bus days.

Suggest, do not take any cash as they charge ridiculous fees to do exchange. It's cheaper to pay the bank fees for the couple withdrawals you might make.

With all that said the trip as a whole was great, on the last day our vehicle to return us to the airport didn't arrive. The hotel was great and called the company which ended up paying the hotel to take us so it worked out well. I would suggest if the tour guide is gone because you have a later flight call the bus company (number supplied in your package) about 15 mins before they are suppose to pick you up to confirm they are coming to avoid unwanted stress of arriving at the airport on time..

This post was determined to be inappropriate by the Tripadvisor community and has been removed.

It is also very easy to self drive and book your own accommodation etc.

I too am looking at this tour and would be interested to hear of any new experiences with Collette and your opinion of this itinerary if you've taken it.

Top Destinations

Collette tours travel all around the world, to all 7 continents including Antarctica . They are well known for Central and South America, Australia, and Africa. They also offer an impressive variety of North America tours including several in the United States and Canada.

Travel styles include everything from river cruises to family tours to faith based tours.

Collette Travel Style

Collette promises the “trip of a lifetime” through exclusive outings, luxury touches, and appreciating the moments of anticipation before the world reveals itself. Their travel style is about discovering new cultures, embracing the explorer within -- in time for a cocktail at the end of the day.

Beautiful national park landscape

They have 6 broad classifications for travel style: Classic, Explorations, Spotlights, River Cruise, Faith, and Impact Travel:

1. Classic Collette Tours - This is what they call their Flagship collection, group tours that make the postcard come to life. Visit all the must see sites, enjoy cultural experiences, all with a professional and knowledgeable guide, there to help make your travel as seamless as possible. Groups are on the larger side

2. Explorations - These tours are about going deeper, meeting locals, and getting off the beaten path. “Authenticity” is a big word for Collette Explorations. You’ll experience the destination in a smaller group, an average of 18 people, allowing for access to more local experiences not available to larger groups. Classic sites will also be included in your itinerary, but the focus is mostly on unique experiences.

3. Spotlights - Have a shorter amount of time and don’t want to miss anything? Collette Spotlight tours are designed to maximize your city stay or short getaway experience. These are primarily walking tours, packed with sightseeing, historical and cultural information, but with some downtime as well. Typically these tours are between 5-9 days.

4. River Cruise - A very popular mode of travel, particularly for 50+ travelers, river cruising is ideal for those seeking a leisurely vacation, unpacking only once, enjoying gliding by beautiful sites and participating in various guided shore excursions. Collette river cruises go around the world, including China, Egypt, and Europe.

5. Faith - For those travelers interested in visiting religious sites, Collette has a group of tours dedicated to faith based travel. Visit world famous icons and learn their ancient histories.

Collette Faith tours visit everything from grand churches to the humble beginnings of the three major world religions in the Holy Land. Tours are history based with an emphasis on finding deeper spiritual significance and meaning. They also have trips to the Oberammergau Passion Play .

6. Impact Travel - Being a responsible traveler is an important component on all Collette tours, however if you’re seeking to do more to give back, their Impact Tours are a great way to do so. Sightsee with a purpose as you assist with local initiatives, volunteering among the community, helping in classrooms, and protecting local wildlife.

Everyone at Collette believes travel is vital to a life well-lived and our executive team sets the tone. Drawing on a diverse set of skills that includes operations, sales, information technology, law and financial planning, they work across three offices to bring you the best experience possible.

There are so many benefits to letting someone else take on all the details that come with having The Perfect Trip. See why more and more travelers choose to Go Guided — and why they never go back.

5 Reasons to Go Guided:

Go Tour Managers!

On Day 1 of your trip, you’ll meet a friendly person who sure does know a lot about your tour and the destinations you’re visiting. This highly skilled professional is your tour manage and from the moment you meet this key player on your tour, you’ll know you’re in good hands. With their rich travel backgrounds, as well as their useful information about language, currency, and all things local, you can relax and enjoy the ride.

Go Culture!

Visiting a destination gives you a taste of the local culture. But imagine actually becoming part of that culture. Staying overnight in an Irish castle like Old-World royalty…feeling the cool waters of the Great Barrier Reef envelop you as you snorkel in its turquoise paradise…or rolling dough with an Italian chef to make the perfect pizza. It’s not just about all the iconic spots that will make for the best photos, it’s about diving into another world that makes for the best memories.

Go Product Team!

Our product experts are probably on the road right now — scoping out the best of our worldwide destinations. They go, take it all in, and find the moments they love best. Those are the moments they create for you. Those experiences and sights comprise each itinerary and make each one extra-special. Best of all, you don’t have to plan a thing. You just need to choose which itinerary best suits you.

Travel is social by nature. Guided travel is extra social. Meet a cast of characters: your fellow travelers, tour manager, driver, local guides and more. The social aspect of guided travel is one of the best parts! Many travelers on our tours have forged lasting friendships. Think of all the wonderful people waiting to meet you out in the world.

Go Worry-Free!

Your peace of mind is the most important thing to us. And that starts with our roundtrip home to airport sedan service. Forget taxis, airport fees, or public transportation. We will get you there...and back. And if for any reason you need to cancel your tour, you can do so — right up until the day before departure — and receive a full refund (thanks to our travel protection plan).

There are many ways to experience the world:

Among Collette’s worldwide collection of tours we offer a variety of guided travel choices. No matter where (or how) you want to go, Collette can take you there.

Small Groups, Big Experiences

From vibrant cities to remote villages, immerse yourself in other worlds. As part of a small group, enjoy accommodations chosen to capture the spirit of the destination, savor spectacular local cuisine, and take the time to explore on your own. Along the way Explorations sets the stage for the unexpected moments that make travel so special. With just 12-24 passengers, these are the personal adventures that today’s cultural explorers dream about.

Amazing Family Moments Included

Collette's Family tours bring travelers of all ages together to experience the world’s greatest destinations. There’s no better classroom than the world, no better education than taking a walk through history. Today’s parents — and grandparents — want to share the riches of travel with their children and grandchildren. Each tour in our family line is specially crafted with the best local experiences, iconic must-see's, family-oriented hotels and immersive cultural activities. Children ages 14 and under enjoy substantially discounted rates.

Destination must-see's.

South Africa ms1

Cape Town is the second most populated city in South Africa. It’s known for its landscapes, gardens, museums, cuisine and wine, but most importantly, it’s known for its wildlife. South Africa is a great place to see the Big Five: elephants, rhinos, leopards, lions and buffalo, as well as many species of snakes, birds and even eight different species of whales.

South Africa ms2

Referred to as “The Place of the Mountain” this Big 5 reserve also has five eco-systems. It has a moderate climate year round with rainfall in summer. The area is malaria-free and has an upper area with rock formations and grass plains, and a lower area of vegetation and wetlands.

South Africa ms3

Hanglip Mountain Lodge:

There’s never a dull moment at Hanglip Mountain Lodge! The luxury suites here are a great blend of romantic African and African baroque. There are ten luxury bedrooms, spa facilities, dining room and lounge, bar facilities, wine cellar, swimming pool, and the Hanglip fig tree outdoor venue. Every room has a private deck with views of the mountain and lounge areas with welcoming fireplaces. There are also game drives, bush walks, horseback safaris, helicopter flights, paintball; abseiling, and quad bikes.

Kruger National Park:

Imagine yourself exploring almost five million acres of protected game reserve spread out on the plains of South Africa. Here you can see the Big 5: elephants, buffalos, lions, leopards and rhinos running free out in their natural habitat. But wait! There are more than three hundred types of trees and five hundred species of birds to admire, too!

Destination Must-Do's

South Africa md1

Table Mountain:

This landmark is Africa’s most welcoming and photographed attraction and it’s no wonder why! Visitors enjoy riding to the top of the mountain by cable car where the most spectacular views can be found. The mountain is home to thousands of species of plants and flowers as well as the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden. Definitely do not leave your camera behind for this trip!

South Africa md2

Featherbed Reserve (milk trees):

Located on the Knysna lagoon, there is much to see in the Featherbed Nature Reserve. You can explore the reserve riding on a 4x4 vehicle and trailer that takes visitors to key viewpoints on the reserve, or you can explore an ancient sea cave. Milk trees are extremely common here and they can grow up to six feet tall and have a spiny shrub-like look with small yellow flowers along the side.

BouldersBeach800x450

Boulders Beach:

Feel the sea breeze in your hair and the sand between your toes at Boulder’s Beach in False Bay. Aside from being a beautiful spot to lounge, swim, and picnic, it’s also the only place in the world where you can observe African Penguins in their natural habitat. A colony of these adorably furry endangered birds settled at the beach in 1982 and never left. You’ll probably want to stay a whilst too.

South Africa md4

Winelands Region:

South Africa has some really great wine. Visit the heart of the winelands region and take in the colourful mountains and vineyards that seem to go on for days. Don’t forget to taste some of that delicious stuff whilst you’re there!

As you prepare to explore South Africa, enjoy a casual dress style and be sure to pack comfortable walking shoes. Lightweight cottons are suggested for shorts, slacks, tee shirts, as well as hats and one warm jacket and/or jumper.

You’re in for a treat as you sample the truly unique flavours of Africa. The cuisine is sometimes called "rainbow cuisine," as it enjoys a variety of multicultural sources. Eating and drinking in South Africa is a culinary experience not to be missed.

One of the best parts of Travelling is coming back home with souvenirs that really reflect the place you’ve just been. In South Africa you’ll find a plethora of cultural products like carvings of animals made of soap stone, ebony, or other woods; wooden masks, bowls, jewellery and chess sets; jewellery made of precious stones like diamonds and semi-precious stones such as malachite, lapis and topaz; native art paintings, murals and sculptures; safari clothing; and tie-dyed prints of animals.

Day 4 Cape Town

The drama of Cape Peninsula’s halcyon landscape leads you to Cape Point on the southwestern tip of Africa. Marvel at nature’s color wheel – shades of green that blanket rocky outcrops and cerulean waters that form into waves and crash into a brilliant lavender blue. Bartolomeau Dias, the first European to reach the Cape, named it the Cape of Storms, but it was re-named Cape of Good Hope by Portugal’s King John II when it opened a sea route to the East. Among mystic mountaintops over open seas, set out on an easy hike down mountain, passing through one of the world’s six floral kingdoms. End at Boulders Beach for the rarest of black-tie events – a rendezvous with endangered African penguins! This evening, find yourself an honored guest for dinner at a Capetonian family’s home. Dine, exchange stories, and share a true “day-in-the-life” experience. End the evening with happy memories and lifelong friends.

Day 5 Cape Town - Stellenbosch

The winelands of the Western Cape await you. The Cape boasts a reputation as some of the world’s most beautiful wine country, with no fewer than 13 wine routes. After a relaxing morning, a short drive takes you to the idyllic town of Stellenbosch – a zenith of South Africa’s famous winelands. Among rolling vineyards where historic Cape Dutch architecture dots the landscape, enjoy the afternoon at leisure. This evening, learn about South Africa’s renowned varietals during a wine tasting. End with dinner created with locally-sourced ingredients.

Day 6 Stellenbosch - Hermanus - Stellenbosch

Today, it’s your choice. Seaside Hermanus waits for you on the other side of an easy drive over the St. Lowry Pass. Learn more about this quaint maritime village known to be frequented by whales. Take in the town and enjoy its many shops and art galleries -OR- simply relax in Stellenbosch and take advantage of your hotel’s amenities.

Take to the skies on a flight to Johannesburg. Arrive in “The Place of the Mountain,” Entabeni Conservancy. Discover a series of African Baroque bungalows in the alluring umbra of Hanglip Mountain – your home for the next two nights. Then, it’s time to go where the wild things are. In a place where the lions reign as kings, head out in a 4x4 on a search for the “Big 5” across vast marshlands and craggy landscapes. Stretch your legs and enjoy a traditional African sundowner as the sun disappears behind the mountain.

Answer the call of the wild before sunrise. In the open expanse of Entabeni, among the pitch-perfect sounds of the wild, drive out in your 4x4 on a chase for the elusive “Big 5.” Enjoy coffee and tea in the bush. Later, follow the clues left by wildlife tracks as you head out on an investigation alongside a ranger and tracker before relaxing over lunch in the gardens. This afternoon, drive past the big cats as they prepare for the hunt. Under the night sky, indulge in a braai. From the Afrikaans meaning “grilled meat,” a braai is a unifying tradition of an old-fashioned, round-the-fire barbeque that’s a great societal equalizer, a lot of sausage, a lot of spice, and a lot of fun. Afterward, look up and discover your Shangri-La beneath a parade of stars and constellations only glimpsed in the Southern Hemisphere.

Take one more crack at another quest for the “Big 5” this morning. Then, say goodbye to Entabeni and make the journey to vibrant Johannesburg. Your afternoon is at leisure to explore Sandton, a city established in 1969. Famous for its rich veins of gold and other valuable minerals, it is now the bustling cosmopolitan center of greater Johannesburg.

Fly to Victoria Falls today – an awe-inspiring wonder of the world. When you arrive, check in to your lodge that boasts African elegance in the form of a vast open-plan tree house, where herds of buffalo, elephant, hyena, and kudu gather at a central watering hole. This afternoon, when rainbows are at their best, witness the awesome power of Victoria Falls. Afterward, toast the astonishing African sunset with a sundowner next to the animals gathered at the watering hole. Bombard the senses tonight with the tastes, sights, sounds, and smells of the Boma, a feast of fun under the stars featuring a cultural milieu of traditional dancers and drummers that celebrate the warmth of the Zimbabwean culture. Indulge in a superb selection of local delicacies, barbeque, and a variety of game meat for the more adventurous.

Embark on a captivating tour of a local village with our friend, a most passionate village elder. From a casual chat inside an open-roofed lapa that’s welcomed dignitaries and local leaders, to the surrounding fields, bush, and round houses with perfectly swept yards, discover a palpable energy in a place where African traditions are expressed with pride. Later, get ready for the experience of a lifetime. Greet African elephants, spend some quality time interacting with them in their own habitat, and learn some of their unique behaviors. Relax, reflect, and maybe even bring a coffee down to the watering hole during some free time at the lodge. This evening, you might decide to join an optional sunset cruise on the Zambezi River.

Before crossing the border to Botswana and Chobe, engage in a lively discourse about the African explorer and missionary, David Livingstone. Arrive in Chobe – game-viewing country. During a breathtaking safari cruise along the Chobe River, spot elephants and hippos that linger and swim along the shores, and crocodiles basking in the sun.

Bordered by the Chobe River, Chobe National Park’s perennial waters rise in the northern Angolan highlands. Venture into the park for an unforgettable wildlife excursion through the park’s diverse ecosystems featuring remarkable biodiversity. After lunch, it’s your choice! Continue the wildlife search by land on an afternoon game drive -OR- hit the river for a new perspective on a safari cruise. Tonight, gather by the river for an unforgettable, chef-hosted farewell dinner. On your last night, learn the secret to cooking a traditional braai, complete with some local favorites and delicacies.

Fly to Johannesburg where your tour comes to a close.

Collette Unveils New Tours for 2025

athens greece

Athens, Greece. Photo: Collette

Collette has revealed 10 new tours that will launch in 2025.

The trips span four continents in popular destinations – such as Greece, Portugal, South Africa, and Chile – and are categorized in three of Collette's five trip styles: Classic, Cruising, and Explorations.

“We value our travelers’ feedback and used that to put together these exciting new experiences in 2025. Collette wants to show travelers more of what they’re looking to see,” said Jaclyn Leibl-Cote, chief executive officer at Collette. “We’re always looking for new ways for our travelers to explore the world. Not only do we do that, but we add variety in our travel styles. Building new Classic, Cruising, and Explorations tours helps keep things fresh for all travelers.”

Here are Collette's new itineraries starting next year:

"Gems of Greece" in Athens, Naxos, Crete (Explorations): Crowds are booming in Greece; this tour brings travelers to the quieter islands of Crete and Naxos.

"Namibia & South Africa: Epic Landscapes & Wildlife" featuring Etosha and Kruger National Parks & Cape Town (Explorations): Adventure-seekers will enjoy this journey of lesser-known southwest Africa with activities such as big game drives and visiting a shipwreck on the outskirts of the Skeleton Coast.

"Portugal’s Old World Charms" featuring Douro Valley, Alentejo & Lisbon (Explorations):   With its beautiful beaches, hillside towns, and rich food, wine, and culture scene, Portugal is a consistent travel hotspot, and this tour features three of the country's top destinations.

"The Balkans: from Coastal Croatia to Legendary Greece" (Explorations): This tour spans five different Balkan countries, including Albania, which is a first for Collette and has seen a major increase in tourism recently.

"Europe: The Grand Tour": This tour visits eight countries in 13 days and is perfect for travelers seeking to immerse themselves in Eastern European culture, history, and food.

"Essential South America" featuring Chile, Mendoza Wine Region & Buenos Aires (Explorations): This tour features a visit to the desert region of Mendoza, which is also the heart of Argentina's wine country and a hot tourist spot.

"Canadian Rockies and Alaska's Inside Passage" featuring Rocky Mountaineer and a 7-night Alaska Cruise (Cruising): This journey combines the breathtaking views of the Western Canadian Rockies with the beautiful landscapes of Alaska's inside passage.

"Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks" featuring San Diego & California's Central Coast: This is just the latest addition to Collette's portfolio of National Park tours.

"Shades of The English Countryside" featuring London, Cornwall, & Cotswolds: Travelers will get a taste of some of England's prettiest places to live and travel off the beaten path to southern England to see the British countryside's quaint villages, and market towns.

"Utah's Mighty Five and The Rockies" featuring 2 days onboard Rocky Mountaineer: After traveling via rail from Denver to Moab, travelers will take in the views of canyons, spires, and desert landscapes in Utah's five national parks.
