With an incredible turnout for our inaugural tour in 2024, this 2025 Florida Coast to Coast Bike tour takes you from The Fun Coast to The Sun Coast over 5 easy days of riding.

So, you have dreamed of riding your bike from coast to coast but don’t have 55 days to trek across The United States with us. We have a nice alternative. The state of Florida is finishing up a series of bikeways that will take us from the Atlantic Coast to the Gulf Coast.

On this tour we will utilize 12 of the Florida Trails, great surface streets with 97% paved surfaces. Did you know Florida has over 100 cycling trails?

This all-inclusive tour is designed for active cyclists who love riding an average of 50 miles per day on paved trails and streets with bike lanes and shoulders. We recommend a modest pace of 10-15 miles per hour. The central Florida trails and “Old Florida” are dotted with quaint and beautiful, historic towns as well as the highly desirable white sand beach towns of the gulf coast.

Take your time and enjoy your ride. The support van will be a few miles up the road should you need assistance. We welcome e-bikes and 2-wheel recumbents, but do not have transportation space for trikes. There will be no camping with this group. Just nice hotels, B&Bs and great dining out.

The tour is a destination tour starting in New Smyrna Beach and ending in Dunedin, Florida. You may opt to come early and stay late and enjoy a little warm Florida weather. We can provide a shuttle for you and your bike back to our starting point if you are ready to leave Dunedin after the conclusion of the tour.

Accommodation include Ardendales B&B, Dolans B&B, Best Western, Hampton Inn, and Home 2 Suites.

Coast to Coast Trail

The Florida Coast to Coast Trail (C2C) was conceived as an ambitious effort to create a continuous paved multi-use path across the state from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean, the first state trail of its kind in the United States. It will span approximately 250 miles and is currently more than 80 percent complete. The trail will link communities between St. Petersburg and Titusville along its entire length, allowing residents and visitors to explore Central Florida by bicycle or foot. This corridor includes most of the 51-mile East Central Regional Rail Trail, the longest single rail-trail corridor ever acquired by the Office of Greenways and Trails. The trail links all or part of several existing multi-use trails and will be managed by a broad range of communities and agencies.

A Typical Day While each day of a vacation is unique, there are similar elements to every day. Your tour leaders will share the selection of options with you and guide you through the day. Choose to do it all or customize the options to your personal preference.

THE COOL OF THE MORNING Rise in time for breakfast with your fellow travelers and tour leaders who will provide an overview of the day. They will share with you the highlights and mix in a bit of local lore. After breakfast you’ll have time to return to your room before you head off on your ride or to another activity. Of course, if you choose, you can lounge by the pool, arrange for a massage, or a host of other things that suit your fancy.A morning ride might take you through a historic covered bridge, past a series of cascading waterfalls, or through a spectacular stand of cacti. Stop to snap some photos, walk along the falls, or perhaps visit an old-time general store. Everyone is encouraged to ride and explore at their own pace.

LET THE SUN SHINE Leaders will host a gourmet picnic lunch along the ride or you will have opportunity to eat at one of several venues in a small town along the way. Naturally, everyone’s favorite lunch is a spread put on by the tour leaders. It’s always fun to see what they’ve conjured up and enjoy some laughs with your fellow travelers over lunch. You might visit a local museum or winery, or crank out a few extra miles if you choose. Devouring a good book in a lounge chair overlooking the pool or the sea is also a favored afternoon activity. From a short hike to a waterfall to a visit to small family farm, our bike tours offer much more than simply riding down the road.

AS THE MOON RISES Join your fellow travelers for a delicious dinner either at the inn or a nearby restaurant. Evening meals seem to incite conversation and laughter over the day’s events. You’ll hear stories of spontaneous encounters and great feats such as milking a cow for the first time – you do what?Meals are sumptuous three to five-course affairs and include options for vegetarians. Folks often go for a little evening walk or retire to the front porch of the inn before drifting off to their rooms. Enjoyable hours in the out of doors are the perfect prescription for a good night’s sleep

florida bicycle tours

Let’s start with the most pivotal intrinsic. Our most Southeastern state offers nothing but three season comfort. Fall and Winter days are consistently sunny. For a glorious week you can forget the coat and boots. Our design plays to those rich visual and natural attributes unique to Central Florida. On back roads or dedicated cycling infrastructure, this trip showcases the big Cypress that define interior Florida’s wildly lively watersheds. As well as the stately century-old Oaks fringed with Spanish moss, synonymous to the region’s Southern heritage.

On routes that key on quiet, quartz sand beaches and mesmerizingly blue-green lagoons, we dismount to glimpse a sea turtle, or manatees. Arriving for Spiny lobster and Stone crab seasons, our groups settle in, at day’s end, to the charm of an old-Florida lodge of distinction. Moved by a scrumptious tropical breeze, each epic day in the saddle closes out with a cold one. Or perhaps a Jimmy Buffett signature tropical cocktail, topped with a paper parasol to celebrate the sun-kissed Treasure Coast.

Day 1:  Meet-up in Orlando. Then, two-hour shuttle to Vero Beach (pop. 16,919), nicknamed Hibiscus City; Atlantic-facing beach community set on a barrier island. The first ride of our tour sweeps north, between the coast and I-95. On that note: It’s said that Florida is the only state in the US where the further north you go, the further south you get. All subtext aside, that direction delivers rich visual history, optimum cycling routes and abundant wildlife. Egressing from Vero Beach, our route hugs the Atlantic, and more figuratively, what’s called the Treasure Coast. (An entire Spanish fleet was lost here in 1715, swept to the bottom by a hurricane. Estimates place two trillion dollars worth of booty and sunken riches within 60-miles of Florida’s coast.) Our routing, however, locks onto a natural bounty. One that resolves into a warm, tropical embrace, and a trifecta of wilderness: the St. Sebastian River State Park; the adjacent 21,000-acre Fort Drum Marsh and 6500-acre Blue Cypress conservation areas. The latter set-aside wends us past 30-46 ft. tall Cypress trees, most 6-9 at their base. Though some reach in excess of 36-ft diameter. On this stage, we’ll also gain an up-close sense of the region’s unique geology. To wit, as Lake Okeechobee retreated, it left great spans of fossilized mollusk that clung to limestone. These ancient clamshells bore and nurtured gems (called calcites). With a triumphal surge across a handsome cyclist-pedestrian dedicated bridge, we drop into Captain Hiram’s Sebastian Inn, our layover. Named for American GI who perished at Normandy, Captain Hiram’s is nothing less than Jimmy Buffett’s vision of paradise, or island escapism: an inviting resort of old Florida charm, albeit with a subtle Bahamian vibe. Set alongside Sebastian Inlet, which opens onto the Intracoastal Waterway, the gentle waters here are frequented by manatees, Bottlenose dolphins, Pelicans if not all manner of colorful waterfowl.  TOTAL MILEAGE:  34-41-miles TOTAL ASCENT:  301-398ft.

Day 2:  We hail today’s loop as the Lake Okeechobee out ‘n back. Known as Florida’s inland sea, Okeechobee answers to Florida’s largest freshwater lake, as well as America’s ninth largest. Hugging the 730-sq mile lake’s northern tier, our tour sweeps south, via Taylor Creek. Our enjoyably up-tempo circumnavigation lends great optics onto this tremendous natural resource, divided amongst no less than five Florida counties. Holding one trillion gallons of water—despite being only 9-ft deep—Okeechobee forms the headwaters of the Everglades. At the southern end we cycle past three different islands. Originally settled by pioneer stock, the trio of islands was abandoned in the 1960s. Closing out a brisk ride, we shuttle to Clewston. Tonight’s layover unfolds at the historic Clewston Inn.  TOTAL MILEAGE: 23-72 -miles  TOTAL ASCENT: 180-585 -ft

Day 3 : Day 3’s ride follows the Ormond Loop, seguing into the 3230-acre Bulow State Park. A northerly neighbor of Daytona Beach, the Ormond area is decidedly more tranquil—think bowling, pickleball and pools—if not nature and cyclist friendly than Daytona. Pointing our front wheels onto a network of scenic state and county back roads, this stage merges onto vestiges of the Old Dixie Highway. Our routing transits Pine forests, lakes turned red by tannic acids and swamplands patrolled by alligators. Constructed in 1915, then expanded in 1925, the Old Dixie passes over moveable bridges—to accommodate boat traffic—not to mention before more deeply rooted mainstays. Namely, the largest stand of iconic Southern live oak trees. One such beauty, known as the Fairchild oak, is four centuries old, and the largest of its kind. Today’s ride also visits the ruins of an ante-bellum plantation remarkable as much for its remoteness as its building materials. Constructed of coquina, great horizontal slags of sediments embedded with trilobites, mollusk and other invertebrates, the plantation and its adjacent sugar mill offer a fascinating glimpse onto what was the region’s first enterprise/economic lynchpin. Overhead we’ll likely glimpse Bald eagle and Swallow-tailed kites, a small black and white raptor. Our ride closes out at the Minneola Inn, alongside Ormond Lake. A turn-of-the-century property, the Inn gracefully projects old Florida aesthetics, but nuanced with a decidedly Key West vibe. More so, there might not be a better spot to view the sunset, or decompress post-ride than at the Inn’s waterfront Tiki Bar.  TOTAL MILEAGE:  23-miles TOTAL ASCENT:  266-ft.

Day 4 : The day’s ride loops over what’s known as the Alps of Florida. (Don’t snicker, Westerners.) Climbing a total of 1445-ft, our route peaks out at 309-ft ASL. Sweeping through farmlands, vineyards and orchards from Clermont, west of Lake Apopka, today’s ride is punctuated by the Sunshine’s State’s steepest rollers, terrain completely atypical of the Florida peninsula. At Clermont (pop. 30,200), about 22-miles west of Orlando, we gain unprecedented view finding via the Florida Citrus Tower. Built in 1956, the 226-ft tower lends a 360-degree view of the surrounding orange groves. Our ride closes out at the Mt. Dora Inn, yet another signature lodge.  TOTAL MILEAGE:  33-miles TOTAL ASCENT:  1445-ft.

Day 5 : The day’s ride follows a rails-to-trails course, the Withlacoochee: a linear state park shaped around a dedicated bike path, the state’s longest paved trail spanning 46-miles altogether. Smartly built atop the erstwhile Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, this ride sweeps between a pair of chained lakes. Then over former railway trestles, by virtue of small bridges engineered for cyclists and pedestrians. All throughout, the framing along the Withlacoochee Trail is quietly stunning if not gleefully rich in feathers and fur. To either side of trail roam Wild turkey, White-tailed deer and wild hogs; these five to six foot long interlopers reach 150-lbs and up. Speaking of up, overhead we’ll very likely encounter herons, Sandhill cranes, wood storks, limpkins (a long legged shorebird) as well as a great many songbirds. Transiting successive state forests, we enter Richloam: a 58,000-acre preserve of pine savannah mixed with forested wetlands. Rolling in and out of piney forest, we stop to savor small, rural Florida townships. They include the stately and picturesque Floral City (pop. 5216), named for its abundant wildflowers. Should the impulse set in, those gardeners amongst us are free to yell “ floribunga ”! here. The ride partly follows the 70-mile Crooked River, sweeping through the Citrus Wildlife Management area, the Flying Eagle and Jumper Creek preserves, respectively, before our peloton curls off for Inverness, where we overnight.  TOTAL MILEAGE:  23-62-miles TOTAL ASCENT:  420-1767 ft.

Day 6:  Our wrap-up day ride follows the Fleet Trail. From quirky Mascotte (pop. 5538), named for a small tobacco hauler that sailed between here and Cuba during the Spanish-American War, we sweep across the east edge of the aforementioned Richloam Wildlife preserve; then merge into the adjacent 110,000-acre Green Swamp preserve. Paralleling I-75, west of Orlando, we reach the headwaters of no less than four rivers: the Peace, Withlacachoolee, Ocklawaha, and Hillsborough. Ultimately, our route bisects a 560,000-acre plateau of wetlands, lowlands and sandy ridges; a critical habitat and drinking water source. Closing out here we shuttle back to Orlando.  TOTAL MILEAGE: 19 -miles  TOTAL ASCENT:  378-ft.

Our experienced Trip Leaders make it look easy, transporting you and up to 12 guests, along with their bikes, fresh food, gear and plenty of drinking water to any location.

Our food isn’t just good, it’s good for you.

Food represents a big part of the Escape Adventures experience. On our inn tours most dinners and breakfasts unfold at local favorite restaurants. Travel Guides

Take a bike tour, see another florida.

By Bonnie Gross

People go to Tuscany and Provence to take bike tours through scenic rural landscapes, staying in quaint villages and inns at night.

Thanks to a non-profit devoted to bicycle safety, tourists and native Floridians alike can witness Florida's scenery through its bike tours.

A Side You Don't Know

“So many people think Florida is all about theme parks, South Beach and Miami,” said Ron Cunningham, executive director of  Bike Florida . “The truth is there are stretches of this state that will knock your socks off in ways that are totally unexpected. That’s where we try to put our riders.”

Most visitors don’t know about the crystalline waters of Florida springs or the winding roads through rural horse country or the oceanfront in northern Florida where the two-lane road runs right along the beach, Cunningham says.

“Our bike tours give us the opportunity to show off a part of Florida that people never knew existed,” he added.

When it comes to bike tours, Florida has two features that make it an ideal destination: It’s relatively flat, and when the rest of the country has stored their bicycles in the garage for winter, it has warm bike-friendly weather.

Those qualities attracted Michael Sinner, a service representative for a Chicago medical group.

Over the years, he said, his vacations have gravitated more and more to biking and hiking trips, including multi-day bike trips along the Erie Canal, the Great Allegheny Passage and in Alaska.

Those were great, he said, but he had never been to Florida (with or without the bike). In fact, Sinner never even seen the open Atlantic Ocean. It was time to go.

Read More:  5 Bike Rides to Take Right Now

The Beauty of Florida

“Disneyland and Miami Beach are not really my thing,” he said. “I'm more interested in natural beauty and wild places.”

And that’s what he found.

Sinner took the St. John River to the Sea Loop tour and his highlights were dipping his feet in the Atlantic, admiring the postcard-perfect lighthouses and walking the broad beaches lined with palm trees.

But there were views he didn’t expect in Florida. They biked to a fish camp in Welaka on the St. Johns River and pedaled through “pine woods that reminded me of places I love in Wisconsin,” he said.

Sinner said he “simply relished the bicycling through Florida—it was something I wanted to soak in as deeply as I could.”

Ride in Style and Comfort

Bike Florida started these boutique tours a few years ago, executive director Cunningham said, because so many baby boomers who are retiring crave active vacations. They don’t, however, crave sleeping on the ground or eating in high school gymnasiums—all features of many larger bicycle tours, including a big spring tour that Bike Florida has led for 20 years.

As a result, on Bike Florida's “luxury tours,” guests stay in hotels and eat in restaurants every night. There are three vehicles that support the ride and groups are no larger than 20.

Hotels on the tours are dependent on what’s available in these small towns and range from Hampton Inns and Comfort Inns to the Welaka Inn, which is on a high bluff overlooking the St. John's River in an Old Florida setting.

Bicyclists generally bring their bikes by car or ship them, though Bike Florida will arrange rentals too.

The cycling groups enjoy a remarkable camaraderie, Cunningham and Sinner agree.

“People you meet on bike trails, and bicyclists in general, are among the most well-spoken, thoughtful people I've met,” Sinner said. “Everybody, to a person, was fun, funny, and enjoyable company, and everyone seemed to have a fine respect for the land and for our shared journey.”

Tour De Florida

If lower rates and camping appeal to you, you might want to consider Bike Florida’s big spring tour—this event changes locations each year and attendance ranges from several hundred to as many as 1,200 participants, Cunningham said. Bike Florida plans to add new bike tours every year.

Day 2:  The tour continues up Florida’s Historic Coast to St. Augustine, the oldest city in America. We will pass the St. Augustine Lighthouse and over the historic Bridge of Lions into downtown St. Augustine.

Day 3:  The third day is all about exploring historic St. Augustine! This morning we have a guided cycling tour of the city, followed by lunch at a local restaurant . Then you’re free to explore town on your own for the rest of the afternoon.

Day 4: We will continue our journey north up the coast to Atlantic Beach. Making our way out of St. Augustine, we ride on a barrier island that separates the Guana River from the ocean and s erves as the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve. This reserve is one of only 29 National Estuarine Research Reserves in the country, and  protects and provides for a great diversity of plants and animals. Our ride ends in Atlantic Beach, where you’ll have time for a sunset stroll on the beach before exploring town on your own for dinner.

Day 5:  Continuing north, the tour heads toward Florida’s northernmost city. A ferry ride over St. John’s River takes us to Fort George Island, where we will ride a scenic loop into Kingsley Plantation. This historic plantation illustrates the 18th and 19th century in the state. The route continues to historic Amelia Island, where we’ll spend our final evening together.

Day 6: For the final day, we will ride a loop from our hotel to Fort Clinch State Park and back. T he state park is at the very northern tip of Florida along the Atlantic coast and features a Civil War era fort and 1,400 acres of Maritime hammocks with massive arching live oaks. After exploring the park, we return to our hotel to change for an Amelia River Cruise to finish out your vacation on a relaxing note!

Itinerary Download Itinerary

After a brief orientation meeting, we will start our week of pedaling!  Our first day of bicycling will take us south from the resort area of Palm Coast on A1A.  As part of the evolving East Coast Greenway, the portions of A1A that we enjoy on this trip have been upgraded to accommodate cyclists with wide paved shoulders and detached paved bike paths.   We'll take in ocean views for a while, then loop inland and follow a route that is popular with all the local cyclists.  A windy country road along a tidal creek provides classic Florida views complete with wispy Spanish moss.  Two segments of paved rails-to-trails at the end of our journey creates a remarkably remote feel along the Intra-Coastal Waterway.

Dinner is together as a group tonight at the resort.

Today's bike route will take us from Palm Coast up A1A to St. Augustine.  It's not far, but we have an optional route if you would prefer to add miles to your day.  You'll have a chance to visit and climb the St. Augustine Lighthouse before lunch.  The view from the top is among the most spectacular you will enjoy and provides a glorious bird's eye view of the country's oldest continuously occupied European established settlement.

Across the Bridge of Lions is St. Augustine.  Settled by the Spanish in 1565, this small city has a rich history and numerous attractions.  The Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States is now a national park.  The Spanish began construction in 1672, and it has since served under five different flags.  A few steps away is St. George Street, open to pedestrians only, and home to numerous historic and replica structures.

Just a few blocks south of there, you will find our inviting inn for two nights, overlooking Matanzas Bay.

Our "Layover Day" in St. Augustine.  You will want to want to take time some to explore more of St. Augustine today.  Nearby are two grand hotels, now serving other purposes.  Henry Flagler, whose railroad and tourism development efforts had a tremendous impact on Florida, built the Ponce de Leon Hotel in 1888.  It now serves as the central building of Flagler College, and the student led tour of the magnificent building is a must.  Across the street, Flagler built the Hotel Alcazar.  Now home to the Lightner Museum, it houses the Victorian collections of Otto Lightner, who purchased the building in 1946 and donated it to the city.

Bicycling anyone?  We have a great route for you that explores some lovely inland countryside (yes, some still exists in Florida!)

Dinner will be on your own this evening, allowing you to explore St. Augustine's excellent options.

Our big day.  After another outstanding breakfast, we will depart on the bikes for a route that offers amazing views of water, pristine homes, a river ferry and more.  We will pass through the upscale community of Ponte Vedra, through the bicycle friendly beach town of Jacksonville Beach, then navigate our way over to the St. Johns River crossing.  The ferry there provides a brief respite before we resume bicycling north, across the Talbot Islands.  This area is absolutely beautiful.   Bike friendly bridges with outstanding water views feed directly onto dedicated asphalt bike paths through state parks.  Our destination is the charming town of Fernandina Beach, on the north end of Amelia Island.

Dinner will be together at one of Fernandina's many excellent restaurants.

Amelia has many charms to explore.  Take a walk on the pristine beach at sunrise (or sleep in.)  After breakfast, we'll take you on a chartered boat cruise of the Saint Mary's River where we'll learn more about the area's unique history and ecology.  Expect to see countless dolphins!  Afterwards, enjoy a spin around Fernandina, Amelia, and historic Fort Clinch.  Free time in the afternoon will allow you to explore downtown Fernandina Beach and its many shops, galleries and museums.  Dinner will be on your own tonight.

Our final day will include a van shuttle back to the Jacksonville Airport and Palm Coast.  But before we get down to that, we'll bike back down Amelia Island and across the Talbot Islands to East Jacksonville.   We'll have a final lunch together at a great local restaurant overlooking a marina.  Showers will be available before heading out.

Low end of tour price range reflects the 6 month Early Bird Discount, applied when you enroll and pay in full 6 months prior to your tour date.  High end of price range reflects no Early Bird Discount.

WHAT OUR GUESTS SAY ABOUT OUR TOURS…

We are so impressed with the tour book you put together for us.  It is by far the most complete and attractive trip guide we have ever received for a bike trip!   Thank you for all your help.

WOW…quick reply for late into the day…I’m impressed!

Our Family had a great ride on the Katy Trail, thanks for making this memorable

You guys knocked it outta the park with the accommodations, they were wonderful, thank you.  Next on my radar is the Mickelson

Crossroads and Luke did an excellent job supporting our bucket list item of riding the Katy Trail. Rode from Clinton to Marthasville. His sag supported and made the ride a huge success.

It was a great 4-day bike ride on the Katy Trail, guided by Luke and Mark of Crossroads Bike Tours! They took care of every possible detail, so all we needed to do was ride, enjoy the beautiful scenery, and savor the wine tastings at the end of the day. Who knew Missouri had such great wines! Luke and Mark were fun and very accommodating. We hope to ride with them again sometime and will probably try the MCT tour next.

Luke and the team were super to work with. With a lot of travel disruptions with us flying in and necessary changes to our schedule Luke was very flexible and able to adjust quickly. I’d highly recommend him to anyone to arrange a hassle free KATY and Rock Island Spur tour.

we were impressed with how Crossroads tried to cover all the bases and details needed to have a successful Katy Trail tour.  I especially appreciated the promptness of Luke Harris and his patience.  He always responded to my emails, before, during and after the trip. and he was always professional and if I needed something resolved, he fixed it!

Thank you again for everything you're doing. There is no way we could have planned such an amazing (wedding) experience without your help.

From start to finish, using this company assures you will be pampered. The hotels and BNB used are first class. Riding with a group strangers doesn’t last long, soon you are friends. luke and his crew were outstanding and fun.

My partner and I went on the 4-day Katy Trail self-guided tour and we were blown away by the service and lengths they went to make our trip successful. Missouri was experiencing flooding during our trip, and Crossroads went to great lengths for us, including shuttling us from unsafe areas to safer ones. This is a wonderful trip, not to be missed if you like trail riding. We chose for our luggage to be shuttled from place to place, and were not disappointed. Our luggage was waiting for us at each location ready for us.

Luke did a great job of taking care of the riders and making sure we all were having a good time. He chose great places to stay and eat. He had several evening activities for the riders to experience. You will have a difficult time finding a guide as pleasant and enjoyable as Luke and his staff.
