The Best Structure for a Sample Email Request for a Courtesy Visit

When it comes to requesting a courtesy visit, it’s important to remember that you are asking for someone’s time. Therefore, it’s crucial that your email is clear, concise, and respectful. In this article, we’ll be discussing the best structure for a sample email request for a courtesy visit, using Tim Ferris’ writing style.

Introduction: To start your email off, you’ll want to introduce yourself and explain why you’re reaching out. This should be done in a brief and polite manner. For example:

Dear [Recipient’s Name],

My name is [Your Name], and I’m reaching out to request a courtesy visit with you. I am interested in learning more about your work and would be honored to have the opportunity to meet with you in person.

Background: Next, it’s important to provide the recipient with a bit of background information about yourself. This will help them understand why you’re interested in meeting with them and what you hope to gain from the visit. For example:

I am a [Your Profession] who has been following your work for some time now. I am particularly impressed with [Specific Project or Accomplishment], and I would love to hear more about your experience and insights as it relates to my field.

Purpose: Once you’ve established a bit of rapport with the recipient, it’s time to let them know exactly what you’re hoping to accomplish with the courtesy visit. This will help them understand the purpose of the meeting and will make it easier for them to say yes. For example:

I’m hoping that we can discuss your work in greater detail, as well as any current projects or challenges that you’re facing. I would also like to pick your brain about how you got started in your field and any advice you may have for someone just starting out.

Closing: Finally, it’s time to wrap up your email with a respectful closing. This should be a clear ask for a meeting without being too pushy. For example:

Thank you for considering my request. I understand that you are busy, and I would be happy to work around your schedule to find a time that works for us both. Please let me know if you’re available to meet in the next few weeks. Thank you again, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

In conclusion, when it comes to requesting a courtesy visit, it’s all about being respectful, clear, and concise. By following this simple structure, you’ll be able to craft a compelling email that is sure to get a positive response.

Keep it short and to the point: Don’t waste the recipient’s time with a lengthy email. Clearly state the purpose of your request and any relevant details, but be concise.

Make it personalized: Address the recipient by name and reference any previous interactions or connections you may have. This can help make the email feel more personal and increase your chances of getting a positive response.

Explain the reason for the visit: Whether you’re looking to network, learn more about the recipient’s organization, or discuss potential business opportunities, make sure you clearly explain why you’re requesting a courtesy visit. This will help the recipient understand the value of the meeting.

Suggest specific dates and times: Make it easy for the recipient to schedule the visit by suggesting a few specific dates and times that work for you.

Show gratitude: Don’t forget to express gratitude for the recipient’s time and consideration. Thank them for considering your request, and let them know you appreciate any time they can spare for a courtesy visit.

Include your contact information: Make it easy for the recipient to get in touch with you by including your contact information in the email signature.

Proofread and edit: Before hitting send, make sure your email is free of any spelling or grammatical errors. A well-crafted email can help demonstrate your professionalism and attention to detail.

By following these tips, you can increase your chances of getting a positive response to your request for a courtesy visit. Remember, your email should be friendly and professional, clearly stating the purpose of your request and showing appreciation for the recipient’s time. Keep it short and to the point, and make it as easy as possible for the recipient to schedule the visit.

Queen Elizabeth II was an important figure of the world for over half a century. Her successor King Charles III became Monarch on the 8th of September 2022. Whether you live in the United Kingdom or any other country, a letter would be a great way of showing your respect to him. You should be respectful and polite in a letter. To write to His Majesty King Charles III, make sure you follow all available protocol, even if all the rules are not necessarily mandatory. [1] X Research source

Reaching His Majesty and Writing a Salutation

Step 1 Outline your ideas.

  • Be sure to divide your thoughts with different forms of bullets, including Roman numerals, lowercase letters, and numbers.

Step 2 Address The King properly.

  • The Royal family also accepts the less formal Sir” substitution. [2] X Research source
  • The first reference should be His Majesty The King
  • All other instances should be The King
  • Third person pronouns should be replaced with His Majesty

Step 3 Contact The King online.

Writing the Letter Body

Step 1 Draft the body of your letter.

  • A proper tone: "I wish to inform you of an important occurrence I believe deserves your attention."
  • An improper tone: "I demand that my local football association get recognition!"

Step 2 Write a practice letter.

  • Try sharing your practice letter with a friend or family member. Another set of eyes may find a mistake or provide a better way of presenting your idea.
  • A potential start: I wish to inform you of an important occurrence I believe deserves your attention. An amazing service to our nation has taken place recently, and I believe Your Majesty will bestow recognition upon the very deserving citizen.

Step 3 Ensure the letter is readable.

  • Don't use an extravagant or difficult to read font. Avoid overly narrow fonts.
  • Black or blue ink is preferable. Lighter colors may be difficult to read.
  • Use standard punctuation, grammar, and capitalization. Steer clear of practices specific to the web (e.g. All caps for yelling, internet acronyms like "lol", and emoticons).

Step 4 Proofread your letter.

  • If you are typing rather than handwriting, use spell/grammar check.

Closing and Sending Your Letter

Step 1 Sign off properly.

  • Yours Truly works perfectly because it’s commonly used when sending a letter to someone of stature. [11] X Research source
  • Yours Sincerely is also an accepted closing line.

Step 2 Address the envelope.

  • His Majesty The King Buckingham Palace London SW1A 1AA

Step 3 Mail the letter.

  • Acquire proper postage. Depending on your location, and the letter's weight, there may be a somewhat substantial cost to mail the letter to London.
  • If you include something other than the letter, be careful to consider the list of various prohibitions on mail to Great Britain. [13] X Research source

20 Words and Phrases Every British Royal Family Enthusiast Should Know

By paul anthony jones | feb 5, 2021.

After reading this list, you will never mix up regent and regnant again.

Currently, there are more than 40 different countries around the world that are classed as monarchies—and as leader of the Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth II is the head of state of 16 of them . The British monarchy itself is one of the longest established monarchies in the world, and the Queen is believed to be related by blood or by marriage to every English king or queen since at least the 13th century.

Given that lengthy history and global influence, it’s only natural that the world of royalty —and that of Britain’s monarchy in particular—has amassed quite a comprehensive vocabulary over the years, including all kinds of words and phrases that aren’t quite as straightforward or as familiar as they might seem. Here are the correct meanings and uses behind 20 of them.

1. The Crown

This is a lot more than just the Queen’s headgear and a Netflix series . In official contexts, the term The Crown is typically used to represent everything the current crown-holder herself represents—namely, the UK (and sometimes the Commonwealth) plus collectively all of its governments.

2. Household

It’s easy to presume that when someone talks about “the royal household,” they must just mean the Queen’s immediate family or staff. But in fact this term represents not just all the individuals who support the monarch on a day-to-day basis—like her ladies-in-waiting and other personal attendants—but all of the institutions, organizations, and departments that support her and her work as sovereign, too. As a result, it includes the likes of the Queen’s Lord Steward , the Lord Chamberlain, private secretaries, and financiers; representatives from the church and the military; the current Poet Laureate, Astronomer Royal , and Master of the Queen’s Music; and countless other honorary positions handed out to favored musicians, writers, scientists, and artists.

The wife of a king is properly called the queen consort . The husband of a queen is also consort, but beyond that it’s more complicated. In the UK at least, it’s agreed that the husband of the Queen has no right to a title. It’s why, despite the fact that they married in 1947 and Elizabeth II became queen in 1952, that Elizabeth didn’t confer the title "His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh" on her husband until 1957 (thanks to her role as Fount of Honour—more on that in a bit).

4. Heir Apparent

Whoever stands first in line of succession to the throne is usually classed not just as an heir , but as an heir apparent . That specific designation implies that not only are they first in line to succeed the current monarch on their death, but that no one else can—or ever could—challenge their position at the top of the list. Prince Charles , for instance, is an heir apparent because he will succeed Queen Elizabeth II .

5. Heir Presumptive

The opposite of an heir apparent is an heir presumptive , which is namely someone whose position at the top of the order of succession has the potential to be lost or challenged by the birth of a more eligible heir. Admittedly, this is a state of affairs increasingly unlikely to come to pass in the UK since an Act of Parliament was introduced in 2013 removing gender from the order of succession. Before then, it used to be the case that sons automatically outranked daughters, regardless of who was born first. So had Prince Charles’s sister Princess Anne been born before him, for instance, she would merely have been heir presumptive , not heir apparent ; his birth would have removed her position as first in line to the throne.

6. Succession

Succession itself is the automatic replacement of one monarch by their heir when they die or step aside. Hence the formal list of all those in line to throne—ranked in order of their eligibility, taking into account the fact that first-born children always outrank their siblings—is the order of succession .

7. Accession

Succession is different from accession , which is the legal process or mechanism by which a king or queen rises from the order of succession to take to the throne. Put another way, one monarch is said to succeed another, while whoever that successor happens to be is said to accede to the throne.

8. Abdication

Abdication is the process by which a monarch relinquishes their royal authority. Probably the most famous was that of Edward VIII in 1936 , but there have been a handful of other abdications in Britain’s long history. In 1689, James II was said to have abdicated during the so-called Glorious Revolution (although in truth he was effectively ousted from power), while Richard II was forced to abdicate in 1399 when the throne was seized from him by his cousin, Henry IV.

9. and 10. Regnant and Regent

These two similar terms are related, but in practice have very different roles. The current reigning monarch is said to be the king or queen regnant . If that regnant monarch is unable to rule in a personal capacity for any particular reason, then it’s often the case that someone related to them steps up to take over the duties of the head of state without becoming head of state themselves. In that case, they are styled as the regent .

It’s a scenario that has only cropped up a handful of times in British history, and is usually caused by the reigning king or queen being sick, at war, uncontactable, or underage. The future king George IV , for instance, became prince regent when his father, George III, fell ill, while Mary II acted as queen regent while her husband, William III, was at war in Europe in the 17th century.

11. Peerage

Monarchs can bestow any one of five ancient titles or ranks— duke , marquess , earl , viscount, or baron —on any of their subjects. The holders of these titles are known as peers of the realm , and collectively form the peerage —a vast network of noblemen and noblewomen, many of whose titles and ennoblements stretch back several centuries. (Historically, monarchs were able to convene all of their peers together for counsel, and it’s from these ancient assemblies that the UK’s upper parliamentary chamber, the House of Lords, eventually evolved.)

12. Hereditary Peer

Most members of the peerage are hereditary peers , meaning that their title has been inherited from and passed on by their predecessors, and that they too are now permitted to pass their title on to their children. A title effectively dies out if there is no legitimate heir to inherit it.

13. Life Peer

A life peer is the opposite of a hereditary peer—namely, an individual who has their title bestowed on them by the monarch (usually in recognition of some great service or achievement), but who cannot pass it on to their children. Like that of an heirless hereditary peer, a life peer’s title simply ceases to exist when they pass away.

14. Courtesy Title

The immediate family and children of peers of the realm—although not ennobled themselves—can still use so-called courtesy titles to demonstrate their connection to the peerage. Usually, this courtesy title is nothing more than a straightforward “Lord” or “Lady,” but according to the official rules of the Crown, the sons and daughters of viscounts, barons, life peers, and the younger sons of earls are all permitted to use the courtesy title “The Honorable.”

15. Subsidiary Title

Many members of the peerage—and for that matter, of the Royal Family—hold several titles simultaneously. (As well as being the Prince of Wales, for instance, Prince Charles is also the Earl of Chester, the Duke of Cornwall, and the Baron of Renfrew.) A complex set of rules dictates the correct order of importance of these different titles, but it’s usually only the highest-ranking of simultaneous titles that is given precedence. So because “prince” outranks “earl,” “duke” and “baron,” that’s the title Charles is usually given.

16. Dowager

The already complex rules dictating the succession and organization of titles in the peerage gets even more complicated when dealing with widows and widowers.

Major royal titles—like king and queen —do not automatically pass along a family tree from a deceased monarch to their spouse. Prince Philip , for example, is not listed on the British order of succession, despite being the Queen’s husband. Ultimately, when a king or queen dies, their title passes down to the first in line to the throne, while their widow or widower takes the title of dowager king (a title that shows up in some monarchies, though not necessarily the UK) or dowager queen . (Nowadays, however, these titles are considered old-fashioned, and it’s more likely—as happened on the death of George V in 1952—to refer to the widow of a deceased monarch with a title like queen mother —a type of dowager queen.)

Titles in the peerage, however, behave differently. If someone like an earl were to pass away, his title would automatically pass on to his first-born son, while his widow would still be permitted to use her title—i.e. countess—so long as her son, the new earl, was unmarried. If her son were married, then his wife would become countess, while his widowed mother would now be a dowager countess . Like the Dowager Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey .

17. Commoner

In the context of the nobility and the royal family, a commoner is simply someone who does not have a title. It might sound a bit dismissive (or even a bit insulting), but if you’re a commoner, then you’re actually in good company: Kate Middleton (now the Duchess of Cambridge, the wife of Prince William) and Camilla Parker-Bowles (now the Duchess of Cornwall, the wife of Prince Charles) were both commoners when they married into the royal family, and are both likely future British queens (though it remains unclear whether Camilla will take the title Queen or Princess Consort). Though Princess Diana was born into a noble family, she too was technically considered a commoner when she married Prince Charles in 1981.

18. Fount of Honour

The term fount or fountain of honour is used to designate an individual who has the right to bestow peerages, titles of nobility, orders of chivalry, or similar honors, or else nominate someone else to do precisely that on their behalf. In the UK, the Queen alone is the sole fount of honour .

19. Privy Purse

The private income of the monarch is known as the privy purse . Today, most of the Queen’s personal income is derived from her ownership of the Duchy of Lancashire , a vast portfolio of land and property established in the late 1300s. As part of the Duchy, the Queen owns castles , estates, and farmsteads across the UK, as well as more than 18,000 hectares of land, and, minus some bits they’ve sold off, all the foreshore from Liverpool to Barrow in Furness (a little south of the Lake District).

20. Sovereign Grant

Since 2012, in addition to her private income, the Queen has also received an annual payment from the British government known as the sovereign grant . The payment—which is intended to cover the costs of the monarch’s official duties—is based around a proportion of the profits from the British Crown Estate and its holdings, and typically comes in at around £80 million per year (or approximately $110 million). That might seem like a lot, but given that the Royal Family are estimated to contribute approximately $2 billion to the UK economy each year, it’s actually a great investment.

PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND ON THE OCCASION OF THE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE MEETING BETWEEN POPE PAUL VI AND PATRIARCH ATHENAGORAS IN JERUSALEM (24-26 MAY 2014)

COURTESY VISIT TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE STATE OF ISRAEL

ADDRESS OF POPE FRANCIS

Presidential Residence (Jerusalem) Monday, 26 May 2014

I thank you, Mr President, for your words of greeting and your welcome.  With a touch of imagination, I would like to invent a new Beatitude, one I can apply to myself today: “Blessed is he who enters the house of a wise and good man”.  I feel blessed.  Thank you most sincerely.

Mr President, Your Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am grateful to you, Mr President, for your kind and sage words of greeting and your warm welcome. I am happy to be able to meet you once again, this time in Jerusalem, the city which preserves the Holy Places dear to the three great religions which worship the God who called Abraham. The Holy Places are not monuments or museums for tourists, but places where communities of believers daily express their faith and culture, and carry out their works of charity. Precisely for this reason, their sacred character must be perpetually maintained and protection given not only to the legacy of the past but also to all those who visit these sites today and to those who will visit them in the future. May Jerusalem be truly the City of Peace! May her identity and her sacred character, her universal religious and cultural significance shine forth as a treasure for all mankind! How good it is when pilgrims and residents enjoy free access to the Holy Places and can freely take part in religious celebrations.

Mr President, you are known as a man of peace and a peacemaker. I appreciate and admire the approach you have taken. Peacemaking demands first and foremost respect for the dignity and freedom of every human person, which Jews, Christians and Muslims alike believe to be created by God and destined to eternal life. This shared conviction enables us resolutely to pursue peaceful solutions to every controversy and conflict. Here I renew my plea that all parties avoid initiatives and actions which contradict their stated determination to reach a true agreement and that they tirelessly work for peace, with decisiveness and tenacity.

There is likewise need for a firm rejection of all that is opposed to the cultivation of peace and respectful relations between Jews, Christians and Muslims. We think, for example, of recourse to violence and terrorism, all forms of discrimination on the basis of race or religion, attempts to impose one’s own point of view at the expense of the rights of others, anti-Semitism in all its possible expressions, and signs of intolerance directed against individuals or places of worship, be they Jewish, Christian or Muslim.

A variety of Christian communities live and work in the State of Israel. They are an integral part of society and participate fully in its civic, political and cultural affairs. Christians wish, as such, to contribute to the common good and the growth of peace; they wish to do so as full-fledged citizens who reject extremism in all its forms and are committed to fostering reconciliation and harmony.

The presence of these communities and respect for their rights – as for the rights of all other religious groups and all minorities – are the guarantee of a healthy pluralism and proof of the vitality of democratic values as they are authentically embodied in the daily life and workings of the State.

Mr President, you know that I pray for you and I know that you are praying for me, and I assure you of my continued prayers for the institutions and the citizens of the State of Israel. I likewise assure you of my constant prayer for the attainment of peace and all the inestimable goods which accompany it: security, tranquillity, prosperity and - the most beautiful of all - fraternity. Finally, my thoughts turn to all those afflicted by the continuing crises in the Middle East. I pray that their sufferings may soon be alleviated by an honourable resolution of hostilities. Peace be upon Israel and the entire Middle East! Shalom !

COURTESY VISIT TO HIS EXCELLENCY, GOVERNOR SIMON BAKO LALONG

by ARCH BISHOP · June 4, 2019

A speech by the Apostolic Administrator of Jos Archdiocese and Coadjutor Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev. Ignatius A. Kaigama, during the courtesy visit to His Excellency, Governor Simon Bako Lalong and the blessing of his office at the Government House, Little Rayfield, Jos, on Monday, June 3, 2019

In the days preceding Pentecost Sunday,  i.e the celebration of the coming of the Holy Spirit on  the Apostles (cf. Acts 2), we of the family of  God in the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos represented here this morning by the children, the teenagers, the youth, the men and women and key leaders of our Archdiocese have come to express our spiritual and moral support and our prayerful solidarity as you begin your second tenure as the Executive Governor of Plateau State.

Accept please, our hearty felicitations on your electoral victory. It is yet another opportunity you have been offered by the people of Plateau State to lead them to greater peace, prosperity and progress. We know that this can only be possible by the special grace of God and so we pledge our fervent prayers to God and our loyalty to you and your administration and we assure you that we will always cooperate with you in whatever is  beneficial to our people as you try to provide effective and good governance to the people of Plateau State. Your choice as Governor is the Lord’s doing and it is marvellous in our sight. Equally, your election as the Chairman of the Northern Governor’ Forum is a wonderful testimony of your political progress and an opportunity for you to contribute in tackling the worrisome issues of poverty, violence, illiteracy, youth idleness and their  involvement in crime and violence – factors which  have greatly retarded our progress especially in Northern Nigeria.

It is our earnest prayer that the Lord will increase your capacity as an instrument of peace and social transformation in a way that these last four years of your administration will be characterized by remarkably improved good governance with attendant positive fruits seen in interpersonal harmony among the people, infrastructural development, social cohesion and security.

We wish you and your collaborators the grace of office and so we call on everyone you will invite to join your administration to give you very honest support and to always remain faithful and reliable as you try your best to implement your policies and plans so that people will feel even a greater impact of your administration than in your first tenure.

We have come in compliance with the scriptural injunction that we should pray for our leaders, since all authority comes from God. We are called to recognize, respect and obey constituted authority (cf. Romans 13:1, 1 Peter 2:13-14, Titus 3:1). In an electoral contest there will be winners and those who don’t win. Once the constitutional requirements have been met and winners are officially declared, it is our individual and collective civic responsibility to give unalloyed and unconditional support to whoever leads the administration that is in place.  Politicians in Plateau State whether in the ruling party or in the opposition, should avoid the temptation to antagonism, bitterness, hostility or engineering divisive tendencies. Instead,  they should give one another the right hand of fellowship so that together, we can climb the highest height.

We have come here to pray with you, to bless and to entrust you and your team of collaborators to God Almighty to guide your affairs to the greater glory of God and the common good of the people on the Plateau. We encourage you to be spiritually fortified in Christ, find strength and grace through prayer and the sacraments for good stewardship from God whom it has pleased to choose you to serve as Governor of our dear State. In a dream at Gibeon, Yahweh asked King Solomon to request whatever he wanted and Solomon chose the virtue of wisdom to govern his people and that saw him blessed beyond measure (cf. 1 Kings 3:5ff). We assure you that as you submit your choices to God, you will always get the best and enduring results.

We humbly ask you to be proactive and to  sustain honest efforts in tackling the socio-economic challenges on the Plateau and those divisive factors that breed mistrust, hatred, violence, insecurity, polarization and tension as you strive to deliver on your electoral mandate. We encourage you to be relentless in building a formidable Plateau State where violence is subdued by forgiveness, hatred is replaced with love and compassion, foes become friends, and the spirit of dialogue, peace and harmony permeates everything we do.

All of us on the Plateau have a moral responsibility in building an inclusive, tranquil and true home for ourselves and for future generations. The elections have come and gone but we hope that our politicians will grow from political opponents to political collaborators and see to the consolidation of the structures and institutions needed to respond to the legitimate aspirations of the citizens in order to realize our full potentials. As alluded to during your inaugural address, we affirm that we should all think Plateau, build Plateau, and defend Plateau.

It is difficult to think of the future of Plateau State without the active participation of her citizens in such a way that their dignity and integrity is acknowledged and guaranteed through access to quality education, jobs and social amenities. We wish to reiterate our call for the return of and support to missionary, private and other voluntary agency schools as promised by past administrations so that we could train our children according to the much desired moral, social  and intellectual standards in order to meet the present multidimensional challenges of our contemporary society.

Your Excellency, I thank you very sincerely for welcoming us to your office, and I express to you and to all those government officials here present, and those you will appoint soon, our prayerful and best wishes for a purposeful service of the common good for the progress of the entire people of Plateau State. We entrust you, your family and your administration to our Lady, Queen and Patroness of Nigeria, for her fervent intercession. May the face of God shine on you as you lead an inclusive and united Plateau State to greater heights.

Thank you for your kind attention.

The first step in arranging to visit a center recognized in your specialty is a letter requesting permission.

Whether you are planning to work there, to ask for a fellowship, or to simply pay a short informal visit to a center of excellence, you will have to get in touch with the hospital and obtain their approval. Bear in mind that most likely they will not know anything about you; they may have heard of your chief of surgery, if he or she is well known in the field and may know something basic about your country or even your city, … but that's all. With a single letter, you have to overcome possible misperceptions about your level of expertise, your intentions, or even your city of origin.

Elections live: Tory mayor's fate on a knife-edge - as Khan likely to 'squeak' London race

Both main parties now think Sadiq Khan has won a narrow victory in the London mayoral race, despite "wild rumours". But the fate of Tory West Midlands mayor Andy Street is on a knife-edge. Follow results and reaction live.

  • Live reporting by  Ben Bloch

In the days running up to the elections, Number 10 was verging on the unsubtle.

Senior Downing Street figures were conceding that should Ben Houchen lose the mayoralty of the Tees Valley Combined Authority to Labour, there would be a challenge to Rishi Sunak. At that point they would be unable to stem the tide of letters sufficient to trigger a vote of no confidence.

In turn, this might have triggered an unwanted and catastrophic early election.

This is unusual behaviour - for the prime minister's closest allies to be openly speculating on his survivability - yet it is a sign of the turbulence of politics of the moment.

There was method in their madness.

Read the full analysis here:

We've had a full day of results already, with many more to come today.

So what is the state of play?

The Labour Party has netted 173 seats and a further eight councils in what has been a very positive set of elections for the opposition.

The Liberal Democrats have netted another 100 seats and control of one additional council, which is a good set of results for the party aiming to push out the Tories wherever it can.

The Conservative Party has had a disastrous set of elections, losing 446 councillors so far, as well as control of 12 councils.

The Green Party has netted an extra 67 seats, making serious gains in places like Bristol where it hopes to win another parliamentary seat at the general election.

Mayoral races

Four of the 11 mayoral contests have been declared so far .

The Tories held on to the Tees Valley mayoralty, with Lord Ben Houchen hanging on, despite a big swing to Labour.

But that is where the good news end for the government.

Labour took the North East mayoralty, defeating a former Labour mayor turned independent.

The opposition also won the brand new mayoralty of East Midlands , and emerged victorious in  York and North Yorkshire - a region that encompasses Rishi Sunak's own constituency.

We are expecting the results from the remaining contests today, and we'll bring you those as soon as we have them ( more on timings here ).

Following his victory speech in the East Midlands, Sir Keir Starmer spoke to broadcasters, and was asked if Sadiq Khan was the right candidate for the London mayoralty, given how close the race appears to have been.

The Labour leader said: "Sadiq Khan was absolutely the right candidate.

"He's got two terms of delivery behind him, and I'm confident that he's got another term of delivery in front of him."

He turned to the broader picture across the country, saying he is there in the East Midlands having won "a significant victory" in the mayoralty, which is "the pattern across the country".

Sir Keir added: "This is effectively the last stop on the journey to the general election, and I'm really pleased that we've been able to show we're making progress."

It was put to the Labour leader that there were also some losses yesterday, and he said in response: "In some places, we didn't get all the votes that we wanted. And of course we will fight to get those back."

But he insisted Labour has made "significant and very real progress everywhere that we needed to do so".

Sir Keir Starmer is speaking at a victory rally in the East Midlands, alongside Claire Ward, who won the mayoralty there yesterday.

Ms Ward opens the rally by thanking Labour activists in the region for the work "not just to secure our mayoral victory here in the East Midlands, but to secure Labour here in the East Midlands, right across all of our seats".

She says the aim is to bring "power and taking funding from Westminster" to the region to "choose our own priorities".

The new mayor introduces Sir Keir, who hails the "fantastic" and "really important victory".

"You fought for this with a very, very positive campaign," he tells the gathered activists.

"You were rewarded with the trust and confidence of the voters in the East Midlands - a really, really important area for us."

The Labour leader declares that the win will enter the "history books", saying it will be remembered as "the day you were able to persuade people that we are a changed Labour Party with a positive plan to take to the country, and they can safely put their vote against the Labour cross".

Sir Keir repeats what he said yesterday, that the local elections results are a message to the government that the public is "fed up with your division, with your chaos, with your failure".

He declares: "I'm sorry. I don't care which political party you support - if you leave your country in a worse state than when you found it 14 years later, you do not deserve to be in government for a moment longer."

Today, he says, is the "beginning of the turning of the page" ahead of the general election, and adds that there is "lots of work to do".

The Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer, has arrived at a victory rally in the East Midlands.

Claire Ward won the brand new mayoralty yesterday, defeating sitting Tory MP Ben Bradley.

The region encompasses over a dozen parliamentary battleground seats, such as Mansfield (where Mr Bradley is the sitting MP), Bassetlaw, and Bolsover.

Sir Keir will argue that the result shows Labour is winning across Britain, and that voters are fed up of the Tories,

Boris Johnson has paid tribute to the villagers who Sky News revealed turned him away from a polling station when he tried to vote without a valid photo ID - under rules he introduced.

The former prime minister said he attempted to cast his ballot using a magazine sleeve with his name and address on as proof but was prevented from doing so .

The requirement to provide photo ID was introduced by Mr Johnson during his time in Downing Street as part of the Elections Act 2022.

Writing in his Daily Mail column, he said: "I want to pay a particular tribute to the three villagers who on Thursday rightly turned me away when I appeared in the polling station with nothing to prove my identity except the sleeve of my copy of Prospect magazine, on which my name and address had been printed.

"I showed it to them and they looked very dubious… within minutes I was back with my driving licence and voted Tory."

Thursday's election is the first time many voters in England and Wales have had to present ID to vote under provisions first rolled out at last year's local elections.

As well as driving licences, other acceptable forms of ID include passports, proof of age cards, blue badges, and some concessionary travel cards.

It's a bruising set of local elections for the Conservatives, who seem on track for their worst result ever.

Labour has taken control of a string of Leave-voting councils, secured victory in the mayoral election in Rishi Sunak's backyard and won the Blackpool South by-election.

Our economics and data editor Ed Conway picks out the example of Rushmoor - a typically Tory-voting council which Labour has taken control of for the first time - as an example of a significant Labour win.

"Even in the late Tony Blair period... the Labour share was always low and it's just climbed up in the last few elections," he says.

"We're seeing here unprecedented results, that's underlining the national swing."

Despite Labour's success, however, there are "other stories going on", Ed notes, with the party's vote in areas with larger Muslim areas falling, potentially as a result of its stance on Gaza.

Watch his full update on the state of the parties here:

We are expecting the results of two key mayoral races today - London and the West Midlands.

It is thought that the Tories will retain the West Midlands and Labour will retain London - but both races are on a knife-edge.

We asked Tory minister Andrew Griffith how confident he is of winning both races, and he replied: "Well, both of those would be, they'd be wonderful to win simply because of the impact on ordinary people's lives.

"Whether it's the immediate reversal of the very unpopular ULEZ in London, the fact that... in Conservative mayoral areas, crime tends to be lower than in Labour mayoral authorities.

"But no, no predictions - we'll have to see how that goes over the course of the day."

On the heels of the Tory party's very poor local elections performance, we asked science minister Andrew Griffith if the government will be changing tack to address this discontent.

He replied that voters are "only starting to see the benefit" of policies such as the cut to national insurance, which he said "hasn't necessarily fed through into how they feel about their life, their optimism, how much they can spend on the weekly shop".

The minister also acknowledged that many are "hugely frustrated" with things like the chaotic rental market, which he blamed on high levels of both legal and illegal migration.

That issue will be addressed, he said, by the Rwanda deportation scheme that passed into law last month.

"So it is my belief that if we continue to deliver, and we continue to use the next six months to really make that very stark choice that people have about who they want to walk through the gates of No 10 the day after the election in this very difficult geopolitical world, there's everything to play for."

Asked how worried he is about Reform UK that very nearly came second, ahead of the Tories, in the Blackpool South by-election, he replied: "In a democracy you've got to listen to the voters.

"I think what is super clear over the last 24 hours is that where people vote for Reform, what they get is a Labour candidate, a Labour councillor or at a general election, a Labour prime minister."

He said that if voters want "high spending on defence, war on woke, having control of our borders", then they should vote Conservative because with Reform, they will get a Labour government that "wanted to put Jeremy Corbyn into office" and will "promote amnesty" for illegal migrants.

We spoke a short while ago to Tory MP and science minister Andrew Griffith, and we started by asking how disappointed he is by the Tories pretty disastrous performance overall in the local elections.

He replied: "It's disappointing to lose a single Conservative colleague, a councillor, a mayor, a police commissioner."

He said the party was starting from a high watermark following excellent results in 2021, and added that the country has "been through some difficult years and we've had to make some difficult choices".

He went on: "I'd say we're starting to pull out of that. We've got a clear set of plans.

"But no one should take away from the fact it was a difficult night. We're not through the whole of the weekend. There's more results to come."

The job of the Tory party now, he said, is to show the differences "in really stark terms" between them and the Labour Party.

He had sharp words for Labour, noting that they didn't win in areas like Harlow or Teesside.

"There's a lot we have to prove, but every chance that we can do that," he added.

Pushed on the fact that the Tories are sinking to their lowest number of council seats ever with a general election just around the corner, Mr Griffith argued that turnout is much lower at local elections, and "there's a lot of people there who genuinely haven't made up their mind in areas that Labour actually controlled and run".

He also said the government will be highlighting that Wales - which is run by Labour - has "materially worse" outcomes in health and education.

Israel’s war on Gaza updates: Rafah ground invasion would be a ‘bloodbath’

Ground attack of overcrowded southern city would inflict hundreds of thousands of casualties with destroyed health system unable to cope, UN agencies warn.

This live page is now closed. You can continue to follow our coverage of the war in Gaza here.

  • An Israeli incursion into Rafah would put the lives of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians at risk and turn into a “bloodbath” with the health system in shambles, the WHO warns.
  • At least 26 people are killed and 51 wounded in the past 24 hours, Gaza’ health ministry says.
  • An Israeli air strike kills seven people – a woman and her six children – in southern Rafah.
  • Rebuilding war-ravaged Gaza will cost as much as $40bn and require an effort on a scale the world has not seen since World War II amid “unprecedented levels of human losses, capital destruction”, the United Nations says.
  • At least 34,622 Palestinians have been killed and 77,867 wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7. The death toll in Israel from Hamas’s October 7 attacks stands at 1,139 with dozens of people still held captive.

That’s a wrap from us

Thank you for joining us for updates on everything related to Israel’s war on Gaza.

Read here for UN chief Antonio Guterres’s warning that the war in Gaza “will worsen exponentially” as ceasefire talks in Egypt come to an endgame.

Here’s what happened today

Here’s a quick look at the main developments:

  • The WHO warns of a “bloodbath” if Israeli forces launch a ground invasion into southern Rafah.
  • Hamas sends a delegation to Cairo – where the CIA chief already arrived – saying it is “determined to achieve an agreement” on Saturday.
  • With more than 2,400 students arrested in pro-Palestine protests across US universities, some schools are reaching agreements with students to fend off further disruption.
  • The International Criminal Court demands an end to threats of “retaliation” as it considers arrest warrants on top Israeli officials.
  • The Houthis in Yemen pledge to intensify attacks on shipping in the Red Sea if Israel attacks Rafah in southern Gaza.

What’s behind the US generational divide on Israel’s war on Gaza?

Polls suggest an increasing number of young Americans are siding with Palestinians and growing critical of Israel.

Successive US administrations across the political divide have backed Israel since it was created in 1948. But polls suggest public support for Israel in the United States now appears to be waning, especially among young people.

But many say this year’s celebrations will be subdued because of the war in Gaza and Israeli restrictions.

Gaza medics raise awareness as infectious diseases spread

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced by Israeli military attacks are forced to live in tents or shelters, with little access to clean water or medicine.

Accumulating sewage waste and soaring temperatures reaching as high as 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) have led to the spread of dangerous infectious diseases, especially Hepatitis A.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society published images of its teams organising awareness workshops to teach displaced Palestinians in schools and shelters about the spread of disease.

The Palestinian man was injured in the town of Zeita, north of Tulkarem, according to the Wafa news agency.

Israeli raids in the occupied West Bank have intensified since the war on Gaza started on October 7. More than 8,500 Palestinians have been arrested or detained.

‘Time to give Gaza access to international media’: UNRWA chief

Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), says Palestinian journalists in Gaza should be joined by their international peers to report on the war.

Marking World Press Freedom Day, he noted the highest number of journalists killed in any conflict is by the Israeli military in the besieged enclave.

“Without the courage and the determination of Palestinian journalists, we wouldn’t know and comprehend the extent of the tragedy unfolding in Gaza,” he wrote in a post on X. “Time to give access to international media to complement the work of their local peers.”

‘Despicable’ aid convoy attack by Israeli settlers

The United Nations reports one of its convoys carrying humanitarian aid from Jordan to Gaza had food aid vandalised by Israeli settlers when it drove through the occupied West Bank.

“Going through the West Bank, Israeli civilians offloaded and vandalised a limited amount of goods from the convoy,” UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters.

The humanitarian relief included food parcels, sugar, rice, supplementary food for those malnourished and milk powder. Hundreds of thousands of people in northern Gaza are facing famine, with acute malnutrition prevalent throughout the rest of the Strip.

Earlier, the EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, said of the incident: “It is despicable that people who lack nothing stop food reaching those in need.”

Bahrain-based group likely claimed attack to ‘deter overland Israeli trade’

An Iran-aligned Bahrain-based group called Saraya al-Ashtar published a video of a drone, allegedly targeting a company facilitating overland trade in the Israeli port city of Eilat.

A report by the Critical Threats Project says the company, Trucknet Enterprise, signed several agreements with Emirati companies in December 2023 to organise overland trade to the Gulf and mitigate the impact of attacks on shipping by the Houthis in Yemen.

“Houthi attacks have reduced commercial operations at the port of Eilat and thus driven Israel to rely more on land routes through Jordan and the Gulf states to the Persian Gulf,” it says.

“Saraya al-Ashtar likely claimed the attack, regardless of whether it occurred, to deter companies and the Gulf states from supporting overland Israeli trade.”

Israeli forces detained three Palestinian Islamic Jihad fighters accused of planning bombing attacks in the West Bank, according to a Times of Israel report on May 2. President Biden to host Jordan’s King Abdullah II

The meeting comes against the backdrop of talks for a deal to release captives and prisoners and secure a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza after nearly seven months of war.

King Abdullah II last visited the White House in February, when he called for an immediate ceasefire and warned an attack on Rafah would cause a “humanitarian catastrophe”.

Hamas going to Cairo ‘in positive spirit to reach an agreement’

Hamas officially confirmed in a statement it will send a delegation to Cairo on Saturday to “complete” mediated negotiations. A top leader in the group, Khalil al-Hayya, will lead the delegation.

The group emphasised its previous position that it looks at the proposal in a “positive spirit”.

“We are going to Cairo in the same spirit to reach an agreement. We in Hamas and the Palestinian resistance forces are determined to achieve an agreement that fulfils our people’s demands for a complete cessation of the aggression, the withdrawal of the occupation forces, the return of the displaced, relief and reconstruction, and a serious exchange deal,” a statement said.

How serious are US universities about divesting from Israel?

A small number of US universities and school leaders struck deals with pro-Palestinian protesters, fending off possible disruptions of final exams and graduation ceremonies.

The agreements at schools – including Brown, Northwestern and Rutgers – stand out amid the chaotic scenes and 2,400-plus arrests on 46 campuses across the nation since April 17.

Deals included commitments by universities to review their investments in Israel or hear calls to stop doing business there. Many protester demands have zeroed in on links to the Israeli military as the war grinds on in Gaza.

The agreements to even discuss divestment mark a major step on an issue that has been controversial for years. But some analysts are sceptical.

“I think for some universities, it might be just a delaying tactic to defuse the protests,” said Ralph Young, a history professor at Temple University in Philadelphia. “The end of the semester is happening now. And maybe by the time the next semester begins, there is a ceasefire in Gaza.”

Israeli raid targets home in central Gaza

Our Al Jazeera Arabic reporter in Gaza says an Israeli air strike destroyed a house in the Maghazi camp.

Some of the most intense Israeli raids in the nearly seven-month-long war have taken place in central Gaza. Maghazi camp, specifically, has come under attack several times over the last few months.

In one of the deadliest attacks in December, more than 100 people were killed , mostly displaced women and children.

Israel hasn’t presented ‘comprehensive plan’ for Rafah invasion: US

White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre says Washington has been “clear” with Israel about its concerns over “any major military operations” in the southern city of Rafah and the danger posed to 1.5 million civilians there.

“We want to make sure their lives are protected. We believe the Israeli government is going to take our concerns into account,” she told reporters during a press briefing.

“But we have not seen a plan, comprehensive plan, and we want to make sure that those conversations continue because it is important to protect those Palestinian lives, those innocent lives, those more than a million citizens who are seeking refuge in that part of Gaza in Rafah.”

Gaza protesters win concessions at Goldsmiths University of London

Samira Ali, a pro-Palestine demonstrator at Goldsmiths University of London, says school administrators agreed to review investments with Israeli companies in exchange for her group ending the occupation of several buildings in protest of the war on Gaza.

“Another good thing we won, we were occupying the media office at Goldsmiths and they agreed to rename it after Shireen Abu Akleh . To have that recognition of a Palestinian journalist murdered by the Israeli military is something we’re really proud of,” Ali said.

Abu Akleh, a longtime correspondent with Al Jazeera, was killed two years ago by an Israeli soldier while covering a raid in the occupied West Bank. The soldier has never been held accountable for the killing.

Palestinian family forced by Israel to demolish shops in occupied East Jerusalem

Israeli authorities have reportedly forced a Palestinian family to demolish three shops they owned for decades in the town of Silwan in occupied East Jerusalem.

The Israeli municipality in the area ruled the stores must be destroyed because they were built without a permit, the Wafa news agency quoted Yassin Qaraeen, a family member, as saying.

Israeli military held woman in Gaza to force brother’s surrender: Rights group

The Israeli army has held a Palestinian woman in Gaza for hours to force her brother to turn himself in, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor.

Enas Abu al-Moazza was travelling south towards Rafah with her husband, Palestinian photojournalist Muhammad al-Hajjar, and their children to eventually escape Gaza by moving abroad.

They were stopped at gunpoint at a checkpoint near the Netzarim Corridor, which the Israeli military has set up to separate northern and southern Gaza.

Al-Hajjar was driven away while al-Moazza was reportedly held until her 21-year-old brother surrendered. The family said her brother has no ties to armed or political groups.

“The Israeli army held al-Moazza for roughly 12 hours before seizing all of her belongings, including cash, gold and cell phones, and ultimately releasing her. She was given only her ID card,” the Geneva-based rights group said.

“Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor stresses that holding a person hostage to force their family member to ‘surrender’ is a war crime. Civilians should not be used as tools of war or put in danger during military operations.”

LISTEN: Is support for Israel waning among young Americans?

Successive US administrations across the political divide have backed Israel since it was created in 1948.

But polls suggest unequivocal public support now appears to be waning, especially among young people. Many from this generation are now protesting on university campuses against the war on Gaza.

So, is the anger among young Americans highlighting a generational divide in Washington’s policy towards Israel? And what are the reasons reshaping public opinion?

UN chief ‘encourages’ Israel and Hamas to reach truce deal

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says Israel and Hamas should reach an agreement with the stakes so high.

“For the sake of the people of Gaza, the hostages and their families, and the region and the wider world – I strongly encourage the government of Israel and Hamas leadership to reach an agreement in their negotiations,” he wrote in a post on X.

“Without that, I fear the war will worsen exponentially.”

‘An entire family wiped out’

Gaza resident Sanaa Zoorob said her sister and six of her nieces and nephews were killed in an Israeli attack on Rafah. Two of the children “were found in pieces in their mother’s embrace”, she said.

One of the children was six years old and another was handicapped.

“An entire family wiped out. I just want to convey a message – what is the fault of these children? What have they done to have their building bombed by three rockets? These children were sleeping. Their remains were collected in one bag,” said Zoorob.

She appealed for “a permanent ceasefire and a full withdrawal from Gaza” of Israeli troops.

Calls for international oversight of Israeli prisons after doctor’s killing

Four prominent Palestinian human rights organisations have expressed “deep dismay” after renowned orthopaedic surgeon Adnan al-Barash was killed in an Israeli prison.

Addameer, Al Mezan, Al-Haq and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights said the doctor’s arrest and killing fall within a pattern of Israeli abuse of incarcerated Palestinians.

“Our organisations can confirm that he was killed while being held in Ofer Prison, an Israeli detention facility in the occupied West Bank operated by the Israeli Prison Services. His body remains withheld by Israeli authorities.”

They also called on the international community to take “immediate and concrete action” to ensure investigative access to Israeli prisons and detention centres, where many Palestinians have been tortured and killed.

Palestinian authorities and prisoner groups said Dr al-Barash was taken by Israeli soldiers in December from al-Awda Hospital in northern Gaza and died on April 19.

Top EU diplomat condemns attack on aid convoy

Earlier, two Jordanian aid convoys carrying food, flour and other humanitarian aid were attacked by Israeli settlers on their way into Gaza, Jordan’s state-run Petra news agency reports.

A senior European official denounced the impediment of aid getting into the war-battered territory, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians face famine.

“It is despicable that people who lack nothing stop food reaching those in need,” the EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, said on X.

‘Completely misguided’: UK minister undeterred by Iran sanctions

UK Defence Minister Grant Shapps and British military commanders targeting the Houthis in Yemen are among officials in the UK and US who have been blacklisted by Iran.

“So, if Iran thinks that these latest sanctions will intimidate anyone then they’re completely misguided.”
