Cool Cruiser

I was on the Crown that day.

Now that the NTSB met recently on January 10, 2008, a lot of questions have answers. I made it easy for you and provide links to short Youtube videos of the main presentations given that day. I found it very interesting, I guess because I was there, and also because there was just so much speculation.

The NTSB made a great 2½ minute animation of the events. If you want to finally know h ow far did it lean? For how long? What were the extent of the injuries? Could the ship capsize? Was it all one person's fault? Who was at the controls? Did it hit the bottom? Was there a problem with the steering gear? The answers are here:

http://mysite.verizon.net/don2738/ntsbvid.html

Also, I did update my webpage about the whole cruise and added more video, including the video I took as the ship was coming back up. The video isn't that impressive, but the sound is. Scroll down on this page:

http://mysite.verizon.net/don2738/cpreview.html

The whole accident is very unfortunate. I am sorry for those that were hurt.

All of us that cruise will pay the eventual costs of the lawsuits in higher fares.

Let me know what you think of the NTSB’s answers after you see the presentations.

Very well put-together website! Great, in-depth information. Thanks for posting the links. It was interesting to hear the NTSB's investigation of it.

Not sure if I gathered it right, but did they finally confirm that ship listed 24%? They mentioned 19-24% and on the graphics of the actual turn, it looked likt it got up to "24" and then was righted.

They discussed that there were earlier estimates of 18 or 19° but they conclude the heel angle was 24°. The ship's instrument's could record angles up to 15° but that instrument was over its limit for 20 seconds, the "data plateau". They used a security camera that showed the side of the ship and the horizon.

Thanks for posting...very interesting!

That's what I thought - 24 degrees list. The naval architect said anything "over 10% is considered very severe" but that the ship would always right itself at anything under about 35% list. Still, 24% is a huge amount of list!!!!

I didn't see where any actions were taken agains the Capt. and the second in command. I think they were posted months ago, but I've forgotten what the outcome was. Sounds like they were the 2 who were responsible for the problems. What happened to them?

Cool, thanks for posting this.

The summary is at:

http://www.ntsb.gov/Publictn/2008/MAR0801.htm

Contains the conclusions:

CONCLUSIONS

  • The following were not factors in the accident: vessel’s mechanical condition, weather, sea state, and behavioral or physiological impairment of the crew.
  • The captain and staff captain did not recognize that high speed and shallow water were adversely affecting the vessel’s course stability.
  • The captain and staff captain inappropriately adjusted the trackpilot’s rudder limit in response to unintended deviations from the vessel’s set heading, and they failed to adjust the rudder economy setting, which was inappropriate for the sea state and was exacerbating the course deviations.
  • The captain should not have transferred the conn to the second officer and left the bridge unless he could verify that the vessel’s heading fluctuations had diminished.
  • The Crown Princess heeled because, after the second officer disengaged the trackpilot and turned the wheel to port rather than turning it to midships and slowing the vessel as he should have, his subsequent steering commands to both port and starboard, at angles ranging from 10° to 45°, led to vessel responses that he did not expect, did not understand, and was therefore unable to correct.
  • No deficiencies in the second officer’s training or background could account for his inappropriate steering commands.
  • The errors of the captain and staff captain in operating the integrated navigation system resulted from inadequate training.
  • The captain acted properly in returning to Port Canaveral after the accident, and the crew responded effectively in administering medical care to the injured.
  • The captain’s decision not to order passengers to their muster stations after the accident was appropriate.
  • The systematic collection of data on mishaps related to integrated navigation systems and integrated bridge systems will enhance the systems’ design, procedures, and training.
  • The Crown Princess accident demonstrates the need for obtaining and archiving data on vessel angles of heel.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of the Crown Princess accident was the second officer’s incorrect wheel commands, executed first to counter an unanticipated high rate of turn and then to counter the vessel’s heeling. Contributing to the cause of the accident were the captain’s and staff captain’s inappropriate inputs to the vessel’s integrated navigation system while it was traveling at high speed in relatively shallow water, their failure to stabilize the vessel’s heading fluctuations before leaving the bridge, and the inadequate training of crewmembers in the use of integrated navigation systems.

I+++'ve been waiting for some kind of a report to see how far it listed. I know it felt drastic, etc. while it was happening, and the mess it made was incredible, let alone those poor folks that were badly injured. I remember the little girl that they took off of the ship (I think she was 10) to be med-evacuated and she was looking up at us on the promenade deck, and everyone out there started clapping for her. It brings tears to my eyes, thinking about it.

We have pictures of the shops and pools etc., after the fact and every now and then we take a peak. We were lucky.

Anyway, thank you for the time you spent on this.

I went back on the ship 2 months later, "it was pre-booked" with family members, and all was well. The only thing I noticed that had not been repaired was the panelling on the main level was still damaged where the grand piano slid into it.

Nice to get the official results, free of spin - thanks. Really interesting.

The Crown Princess ship, docked at Port Canaveral, Florida

Passengers injured as cruise liner almost capsizes off Florida coast

Passengers aboard a cruise liner that came close to capsizing in a freak incident off the Florida coast recounted yesterday how they feared being swept overboard.

Two hundred and forty passengers were treated onboard and 94 were taken to hospital after the Crown Princess made a sudden and heavy roll to its right side 11 miles from Port Canaveral, flooding the upper decks with water from its four swimming pools and sending furniture and passengers flying.

The ship's British captain, Andrew Proctor, earlier reported steering problems with the 113,000-tonne vessel, which was launched only last month and was on its way back to New York at the end of a nine-day cruise around the western Caribbean.

"The water came gushing out of the pool like a mini-tsunami," said Tom Daus, a passenger from New York who was sunbathing on the top deck when the cruise liner tilted unexpectedly. "People who were in the pool were shoved out. Tables, glasses, lounge chairs went flying. I was just holding on for dear life to the bannister."

Another tourist, John Joyce, who was on a lower deck booking a future cruise with his wife Rebecca when the liner tilted, told NBC news that he had to dodge furniture hurtling towards him. "I watched the grand piano come tumbling by," he said. "I just assumed my wife was already in the ocean."

Others estimated that the roll, which lasted less than half a minute before the ship righted itself, was at an angle of up to 40 degrees.

A late-night showing of the film Titanic in the ship's open-air cinema was cancelled.

A spokeswoman for Princess Cruises, part of the Miami-based Carnival Corporation with a UK headquarters in Southampton, said the 3,080 passengers, including 58 Britons, and crew of 1,200 were all accounted for.

"A number of passengers did sustain serious injuries. There are also numerous reports of injuries such as cuts, bruises and fractures," she said.

Dozens of ambulances met the ship at the dockside and ferried 94 passengers to hospital. Stan Payne, chief executive of the Canaveral Port Authority, said about 20 of the injuries were serious, including broken bones and dislocated joints.

One adult and a child were thought to be in critical condition, Mr Payne said. But the cruise line said last night three passengers and two crew members remained in hospital although they were expected to make a full recovery.

In addition, 1,600 passengers have already disembarked from Crown Princess while about 1,850 remained onboard.

Two inspectors from the National Transportation Safety Board arrived at the port yesterday to join coastguard officials in trying to find out what caused the liner to list so heavily on only its fourth voyage. The inspectors will investigate any design flaw in the ship - described by the cruise line as its crown jewel - that might have caused Tuesday's incident.

In February, 14 passengers and nine crew members aboard a sister ship, the Grand Princess, suffered cuts and bruises when it experienced "a roll greater than normal" as it made a sharp turn back towards Galveston, Texas, to evacuate an ill guest.

"We are also investigating the cause of the ship's sudden list, which is unknown at this time," the Princess spokeswoman said. "The watertight integrity of the ship has not been compromised, and it is safe for passengers to remain onboard while the ship is in Port Canaveral."

She added that the company was making travel arrangements for those still aboard and expected to have all passengers disembarked by the end of today. All would receive a full refund and reimbursement of expenses.

"We deeply regret this incident, and are doing everything we can to make our passengers as comfortable as possible under these difficult circumstances," she said.

Princess Cruises ship that crashed into San Francisco pier cleared for departure

New passengers had until 11 a.m. PT to decide whether to continue to Alaska.

The Ruby Princess cruise ship that was damaged after it crashed into a pier in San Francisco is expected to set sail on Sunday afternoon after it was cleared for departure.

The U.S. Coast Guard announced early Sunday morning that repairs on the ship, which startled sleeping San Francisco residents Thursday morning when it collided with Pier 27, are complete.

Officials are assessing damage after a cruise ship crashed into Pier 27 in San Francisco while docking Thursday morning.

The ship Ruby Princess “made unexpected contact” with the pier just after 6 a.m., a spokesperson for Princess Cruises said. No injuries were reported, and the cruise line said passengers and crew were not in danger during the incident.

News images showed damage to the side of the ship.

The Ruby Princess had just returned from a 10-day voyage to Alaska with 3,328 guests and 1,159 crew members. The ship departed San Francisco on June 26.

Princess Cruises said the departure time for the next trip to Alaska was uncertain, but passengers began boarding the ship at 11:30 a.m..

Officials said they would provide more details later.

A Princess Cruises ship carrying nearly 4,500 people smashed into a San Francisco pier Thursday while the crew was attempting to dock.

The Ruby Princess “made unexpected contact” with Pier 27 just after 6 a.m. while returning from a 10-day roundtrip cruise to Alaska, the cruise line said in a statement.

There were no reported injuries among the 3,328 guests and 1,159 crew members who were on board the ship.

“I noticed we were spinning pretty quick, to be that close to the dock, and I was mid-ship, portside, looked out the window and we smacked into the dock,” Sacramento resident and passenger Paul Zasso told ABC7 News.

Another passenger said the effects of the crash were minimal, but that “you could definitely feel it.

“It wasn’t like things falling off the shelves or anything like that, kind of like when you get the tugboats coming up against us. So yeah … it was different,” Jeremy Jordan said.

“It was so funny, because one of the dock guys, you can hear him yell out like ‘whoa’ and then you can kind of hear it just slowly going in.

The Ruby Princess docked.

“It’s ironic, because I think it was yesterday the captain was talking about how he goes into docks and how unpredictable the currents are. So yeah, it’s a challenge for them to be able to do that.”

A Princess Cruises spokesperson said the 18-deck liner was left with a dent in its port side rear, and photos show that large, black circular smudges were etched along its port side.

The pier appears to have borne the brunt of the crash — some of the metal spokes that help stabilize the orange buoys against the cruise’s side have been ripped from their stations.

The Ruby Princess with sustained damage.

The San Francisco Port could not immediately say how severe the damage along the pier was.

The extent of the boat’s damage has yet to be determined and could delay an upcoming Ruby Princess voyage to Alaska.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but at the time of the crash, the liner was under the partial control of a San Francisco Bar Pilot, a spokesperson for the organization confirmed.

The pier with sustained damage.

The pilots are mariners who help large ships navigate the 11-mile stretch between the San Francisco Bay opening and their final destination at the pier.

A spokesperson for the San Francisco Bar Pilots said the organization is cooperating with the investigation, but could not comment beyond their involvement.

Ruby Princess passengers stuck until Sunday after cruise ship smacks into Pier 27

Ruby princess passengers stuck until sunday.

Passengers aboard the Ruby Princess cruise ship will stick around San Francisco a while longer as repair work on the damaged vessel is still underway.

SAN FRANCISCO - A cruise ship that has been docked in  San Francisco  after it  smacked into Pier 27 , will stick around through the weekend pending clearance from the U.S. Coast Guard.

A spokesperson with Princess Cruises told KTVU late Friday afternoon that the Ruby Princess cruise ship won't set sail until Sunday at 4 p.m. The cruise line had initially hoped to get authorization to depart Friday.

"Following today’s inspection by the U.S. Coast Guard, Princess Cruises has been advised that Ruby Princess will be cleared to sail once the area damaged in yesterday’s incident in San Francisco has been fully repaired," the cruise line said in a statement.

As a result of the delayed departure, the company has modified the trip itinerary, from a 10-day voyage to Alaska to a 7-day trip.

Passengers have the option to cancel their cruise with a 100% refund, and they will also receive a 50% credit for a future trip. Passengers who want to continue their trip on the Ruby Princess will receive a 75% refund, and a 75% credit for a future voyage.

While the Ruby Princess is docked in San Francisco, passengers are free to come and go.

Passenger shares experience on damaged Ruby Princess cruise ship

Don Thompson gives his experience aboard the Ruby Princess cruise ship that remains docked in San Francisco after it collided into Pier 27.

During a Zoom interview, Ruby Princess passenger Paige Gacayun, said that the ship is not chaotic and everything is calm.

"Everything is up and running and going, so it's like we're at sea. The only things we don't have access to are the casino and the boutique shops," she said.

She expressed confidence in the cruise line's ability to repair the damage and decided not to immediately inform the rest of her family who were traveling with her about the accident.

"As we were boarding, somebody in front of us turned around and said, ‘Hey, did you guys hear about the hole on the ship?’ And I was like ‘No, don’t tell them!’ My family was all surprised when they found out," she said.

The collision caused a large gash in the underside of the ship.

Gacayun and her husband, sister, and brother-in-law boarded the ship on Thursday around noon.

Upon arrival in San Francisco, the Ruby Princess made unexpected contact with the dock at Pier 27 while returning from a 10-day roundtrip to Alaska. No injuries occurred, and at no point were any of the 3,328 guests or 1,161 crew members on board in danger. All those passengers were let off Thursday morning.

A new round of passengers boarded the damaged cruise ship that afternoon, eager to take off for Alaska. But instead of making the 2,200-mile voyage north, they were stuck on board having to sleep overnight at the San Francisco Port.

Despite the long delay, some passengers seemed to be in an upbeat mood.

"The comedy show last night was great. Breakfast buffet was great," Lisa Barnes wrote on a Ruby Princess Facebook page. "I’m happy to be on the boat. Walked four miles around the ship yesterday, doing the exploring thing. Life is good."

Patience runs thin for cruise passengers stuck in San Francisco

Patience is running thin for Princess Cruise ship passengers stuck in San Francisco after the boat smacked into a pier causing a gash in its underside. Dave Detling reports

Passengers told KTVU the captain has been giving updates on the ship’s status. "They happen about every two hours," said passenger Tod Imperato. "I understand the captain is reading from a memo that’s been handed to him, but it would certainly be helpful to have more information to know what to expect."

Despite the situation, passenger Don Thompson maintains a positive attitude. However, he expressed his dissatisfaction with the limited information provided by the cruise line. Thompson mentioned that guests were not informed that there were problems with the ship until the originally scheduled departure time.

"Overall they kept it pretty quite, and I'm going to guess that 75-80% of the passengers had no idea until the first announcement came Thursday night," he said.

He added," there's a handful of frustration now about having to make a decision on whether to stay or whether to go."

Thompson has chosen to remain aboard the Ruby Princess cruise ship, hoping that the ordeal will ultimately prove worthwhile.

Ruby Princess leaves SF for Alaska 4 days after crash at Pier 27, nearly 600 passengers fewer

The ship has been sitting at Pier 27 in San Francisco since colliding with the dock Thursday morning.

KGO logo

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- After colliding with the dock and sitting at Pier 27 in San Francisco since Thursday, the Ruby Princess cruise ship finally embarked on its journey to Alaska.

The U.S. Coast Guard announced Sunday morning repairs to the Ruby Princess have been completed and the cruise ship is "free to depart" for Alaska.

The coast guard said it lifted the Captain of the Port order at 1 a.m. Sunday.

Now, the cruise line said it was expected to depart the Bay Area at 2:30 p.m. Our ABC7 cameras saw the Princess ship move around 3:40 p.m.

crown princess cruise accident

Passengers had until 11 a.m. to decide whether they will stay on the ship to to continue the trip or leave.

Cruise passenger Anita Lawhon from Reno captured the moment the Ruby Princess finally set sail from San Francisco Sunday afternoon, she thought her "bon voyage" would never happen.

"Who would've thought we'd be sitting here in San Francisco for four days? I'm so excited go out toward the Golden Gate for the first time in my life, exciting," said Lawhon.

The ship's captain told passengers the green light was given overnight to sail.

"Actually, I just walked down because I wanted to see the state of repairs and was pleasantly surprised it looks great to me," said passenger Alexandra Shannon.

In a statement, the cruise line said, "Princess Cruises can confirm that repairs on Ruby Princess have been completed, and following inspection and certification by the United States Coast Guard the ship is safe and fit to sail."

"I got off the ship I decided to take the deal they offered," said Simon from Rio Vista, who declined to give his last name.

Ruby Princess had 3,256 guests and 1,161 crew onboard. Now, they are departing with 2,677 guests and 1,161 crew onboard. A difference of 579 passengers.

The delayed 10-day sailing will now be a 7-day cruise returning to San Francisco on Sunday, July 16.

"The Ruby Princess is about 950 feet long and about 115,000-tons," Captain Allan Post with the Texas A &M Maritime Academy pointed out. "With that much weight and that much sail area, the vessel is affected by wind, by current, and by the technical abilities of its design," he said on Friday as repairs were being made.

On Friday, ABC7 saw crews from the Port of San Francisco and Coast Guard inspecting the hole in the vessel and repairs which have been done so far.

"Our main concern is the vessel able to transport passengers and operate safety," said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Levi Read on Friday.

Passengers who boarded the ship Thursday have been asked to stay on board and not come ashore. Originally, there were 3,256 guests and 1,161 crew onboard as the ship remains docked at Pier 27.

Princess Cruises says guests who elect to cancel their cruise will receive a 100% refund of their cruise fare, post-cruise hotel packages and transfers booked through Princess, prepaid shore excursions and other prepaid items and taxes, fees and port expenses. Each guest will also receive a 50% Future Cruise Credit of the cruise fare paid on this voyage, which may be applied to any future Princess cruise that is booked by February 1, 2024 and sails by February 1, 2025. They may remain onboard until 1100 local time on Sunday, July 9 to better assist with alternative plans they may be making.

Guests who continue with their Princess vacation will receive a 75% refund of the cruise fare paid as well as unused pre-paid shore excursions booked through Princess and the refundable portion of the taxes, fees and port expenses for the missed ports. Each guest will also receive a 75% Future Cruise Credit equal to the cruise fare paid on this voyage, which may be applied to any future Princess cruise that is booked by February 1, 2024 and sails by February 1, 2025.

Investigation into the bar pilot

We learned more about the Ruby Princess pilot. In some ways, this is an elite group. There aren't many bar pilots, 52 at the moment with four trainees in the pipeline according to the Board of Pilot Commissioners Executive Director.

The investigation into what went wrong with the Ruby Princess during docking at San Francisco's Pier 27 Thursday morning is in the early fact-finding phase.

"It appears the port quarter of the Ruby Princess made contact with Pier 27," said U.S. Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander William Williams.

The Coast Guard which is assisting in the investigation says the pilot is being drug and alcohol tested which is standard in a serious marine incident.

"The Coast Guard has sent two teams, an investigations team and an inspection port state control team to the vessel and will be conducting those inspections and investigations," said Williams.

The San Francisco Bar Pilots are responsible for safely navigating ships they board over the offshore sand bar to docks throughout the Bay Area.

A Spokesperson working with the San Francisco Bar Pilots told ABC7 News on Thursday, "We can confirm a pilot was involved in a hard landing at Pier 27 this morning. We are cooperating with all necessary agencies in looking into this matter and cannot comment further."

The Board of Pilot Commissioners tells ABC7 News the pilot is on the Pilot Evaluation Committee which is responsible for trainees and that anyone on that committee would have to be a pilot more than 10 years.

The investigation is now in the hands of the U.S. Coast Guard and other federal agencies who were notified about the early morning incident.

ABC7 News reporters Tim Johns, Suzanne Phan, Melanie Woodrow, Amanda del Castillo and Cornell Barnard contributed to this report.

Princess Cruises alters routes for World Cruises, avoiding Middle East and Asia

CruiseMapper logo

Princess Cruises has adjusted the itineraries for its two 2025 World Cruises , opting to exclude visits to the Middle East and Asia due to ongoing regional challenges. Instead, the revised routes will include new port stops in Africa and Europe.

The decision to alter the itineraries was made after thorough consultation with global security experts and government authorities, considering the situation in the Red Sea and surrounding areas.

The 116-day World Cruise aboard Island Princess , departing from North America, offers two roundtrip options: departing from Fort Lauderdale FL on January 5, 2025, and from Los Angeles CA on January 20, 2025, with a return to Los Angeles on May 17, 2025.

For the revised itinerary from February 16 to April 9, departing from Sydney , the cruise will include visits to Melbourne and Perth (Fremantle) before heading to South Africa. The journey will then resume its scheduled itinerary starting in Valletta, Malta , on April 9.

Passengers originally scheduled to embark or disembark in Dubai on March 14, 2025, will now do so 4 days earlier in Cape Town, South Africa , on March 9. Guests disembarking in Cape Town will receive a refund equivalent to 4 days of the cruise fare, while those joining earlier will not incur additional costs. Additionally, all affected guests will receive a US$300 onboard credit.

Crown Princess , hosting the largest-ever World Cruise, is set to depart Auckland NZ on May 31, 2025, and Sydney on June 4, 2025, for a 113-day voyage covering 42 destinations across 22 countries on 5 continents.

Similar to Island Princess, the Crown Princess itinerary will avoid the Red Sea and Asia, including the Suez Canal transit, opting instead to travel via Africa. Princess Cruises is finalizing the fully revised itinerary and will provide further details shortly.
