Meet the 12 singles hoping to find love on The Real Love Boat

Thirty-six years after The Love Boat finale, the ship will once again set sail — but this time, real passengers are searching for romance.

The Love Boat will soon be making another run.

CBS has revealed the cast and crew for their new reality series, The Real Love Boat , premiering Oct. 5, which combines elements of a dating show with the luxury of a romantic cruise. Twelve singles will board the ship, complete with its own captain, bartender, and cruise director (a nod to classic characters from the original series).

Hosted by Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O'Connell , the cruise will set sail throughout the Mediterranean, making ports of call in Barcelona, Marseille, Rome, Santorini, Athens, and more. The singles will search for true love, all while tasked with competing in challenges to test their compatibility with other players.

However, much like Love Island , new contestants will be joining the game throughout the cruise, so players will need to couple up... or walk the plank (metaphorically).

So, who are the first batch of seafaring singles boarding The Real Love Boat ? See the list below for the ship's crew and initial group of passengers looking for love on the high seas.

‘The Real Love Boat’ cast: Meet the 12 singles on the cruise ship dating show

Hosts Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O’Connell in the season premiere of CBS' "The Real Love Boat."

A group of singles are ready to literally set sail to find their soulmates on CBS’s reimagining of the popular drama “The Love Boat," which aired on ABC from 1977 to 1986.

The network has transformed the show’s concept into a real-life rom-com with “ The Real Love Boat .” The new reality dating show will follow a group of singles as they board a Princess Cruises ship and travel through the Mediterranean searching for love.

As for how to watch? Tune in on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 9 p.m. ET on CBS for the premiere.

“The Real Love Boat” is hosted by Jerry O’Connell and Rebecca Romijn, who have been married since 2007 and have 13-year-old twin daughters.

In a callback to the original series, the contestants will be joined by the ship’s captain, bartender and cruise director who will help them form connections as they visit locations like Barcelona, Rome and Santorini.

The series seems to be a combination of “Love Island” and “The Bachelor” as the show will begin with 12 contestants. Then, new singles will arrive each week and others will be eliminated.

“Throughout the season, singles embark on destination dates and compete in challenges to test couples’ compatibility and chemistry, while earning valuable rewards,” a press release for the show explained. “The romantic waters will be tested when new singles come aboard, and those who don’t find a match will ‘Shove Off’ and be left behind at port.”

At the end of the month-long journey, one couple will be awarded with a cash prize and a trip provided by Princess Cruises.

So, who is embarking on this brand new reality series? Meet the devoted crew and cast members who will be searching for love and adventure aboard “The Real Love Boat," with information provided by CBS.

‘The Real Love Boat’ Producers on Turning the Series Into a Dating Competition Show — Without Charo (Yet)

Exec producers Chris Culvenor and Jay Bienstock on hiring a real captain, bartender and cruise director, plus getting hosts Jerry O’Connell and Rebecca Romijn to sing the iconic theme song.

“Premiere Episode” – THE REAL LOVE BOAT inaugural episode sets sail as hosts Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O’Connell greet five single women and five single men who are ready to find love and begin the adventure of a lifetime aboard the Regal Princess Cruise Ship. After the singles make their way through the stunning city of Barcelona, they are thrown into the first competition of the season – a talent show where they must impress potential partners! But all is not smooth sailing when two new men come aboard and crash a cocktail party. The episode concludes with the Sail Away Ceremony where the women each choose who has caught their eye and will remain on the ship, while the rest will “Shove Off” and be left behind at port. Special guest star Ted Lange, whose iconic character Isaac helped singles find love in the original 1970s scripted series “The Love Boat,” passes the proverbial cocktail shaker to the new Crew who will help singles navigate romance on the high seas. THE REAL LOVE BOAT premieres Wednesday, Oct. 5 (9:00-10:00 PM, PT/ET) on the CBS Television Network and will be available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+*. Paolo Arrigo was giving the producers behind CBS’ “ The Real Love Boat ” a tour of the Princess Cruises ship he oversees when the creative team fell in love with the captain. They then asked Princess if they could borrow Arrigo for a few weeks — and that’s how, in addition to being a real-life ship captain, he now plays one on TV.

Popular on Variety

Your Captain, Arrigo, who has been with Princess Cruises since 1996, eventually worked his way up to ship captain for the liner. Ezra Freeman, Your Bartender, joined Princess in 2019. And Matt Mitcham, Your Cruise Director, has held that job for 14 years (and apparently met his own wife on a cruise in 2016).

“We didn’t want actors, we wanted people that really did this for a living,” Bienstock says. “A real ship’s captain, real bartender, a real cruise director. And just like the original series, these people, besides doing their day jobs, their roles are to find singles and bring them together in the hopes of a match.”

Adding even more camp to the proceedings: Married couple Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O’Connell not only host the show, but they sing the iconic opening theme (made famous, of course, by singer Jack Jones).

“You cannot underestimate the value of the nostalgia of ‘The Love Boat,’” Bienstock says. “And then add in that theme song.” (Below, the opening to “The Real Love Boat,” sung by Romijn and O’Connell.)

“With ‘The Love Boat,’ there was such a fantastic brand, and what would it be like if we took it to the unscripted space,” says Eureka CEO Chris Culvenor . “We worked closely with CBS, who were the rights holders of the show, and also with Princess Cruises, who were involved in the original show. It was a long development process because all the stakeholders involved really wanted to nail the tone, and make sure that we were building upon this brand as opposed to exploiting it in any way.”

Eureka, which is based in both the U.S. and Australia, was also then able to produce two versions of the show for two different territories (and for outlets both owned by Paramount Global). Before the CBS series was shot, Eureka produced an edition for Australia’s Network 10.

“That was hugely valuable,” Culvenor says. “We effectively did one lap around the Mediterranean shooting the Network 10 version, and then we did another around the same path shooting the U.S. version. By the time the CBS version came around, we had a really finely tuned machine going in terms of producing it. There were things that we did on the Australian version that worked really, really well that we obviously incorporated in the CBS version. And even now in post, there are things that we might be doing in the U.S. version that we look at and go, ‘Oh my god, that’s fantastic, we have to do that for the Network 10 version.”

The shows are slightly different in format — the Network 10 show will air several times a week, requiring more episodes versus CBS’ weekly release pattern, which means the Australian edition is paced a bit more like a soap opera, while the U.S. version focuses more on challenges. Both utilized much of the same Australian-based production crew. (Below, the Network 10 promo for their version, hosted by Darren McMullen, which also features Arrigo as captain.)

“The Aussies are rock stars,” Bienstock says. “Having done one trip around the Mediterranean, they would say, ‘You know what, just as you leave, say, Santorini right around 7 p.m., the sun on part of Deck Nine is perfect.’”

There was only one day for a switchover, as the Australian cast and producers left and the American team came aboard, which Bienstock called a “coordinated dance.”

Of course, the scripted 1970s-era “Love Boat” was mostly shot on a soundstage that re-created a Princess Cruise. In this case, Eureka wanted to shoot “The Real Love Boat” on a real ship — and that took a logistical feat.

“It took place over the summer in the Mediterranean,” Culvenor says. “It was about literally circling a cruise in the diary and planning everything to hit that timeline, because that boat was going on that cruise whether we were on it or not. It gave the show’s prep some momentum, and everyone a real focus.”

“How do we as a production, shoot our show in the middle of all that without affecting anybody’s experience on the ship? And that’s where the Princess crew was invaluable,” Bienstock notes. “When can we use Lido Deck? The Fiesta deck. We want to use the basketball court. We want to use the club; we want to use multiple pools. To navigate around the ship, which is a floating city, you just can’t run around and go do stuff, or you’ll get lost. We were shooting a reality show in the middle of everything, and customers embraced it.”

Adds Culvenor: “When you shoot in a mansion or a villa, you generally have full control of everything. But when you’re shooting on a ship, there’s so much that is out of your control. There are certain spaces that we had purely cordoned off for production. But there were other spaces that quite rightly we shared with the guests. We were obviously very aware that people really were on holiday. I feel like we struck that balance really well.”

In some cases, the show was so embraced by vacationers so that the show developed “crew groupies,” as passengers kept popping up in and around the production. But Bienstock and his team embraced the background “extras.”

“It gave the show a real sense of authenticity,” he says.

Contestants were kept near each other on the floors, with production crew nearby in order to keep tabs. Meanwhile, two familiar faces also make an appearance in Season 1: Ted Lange, the show’s original bartender, and Jill Whelan, who played Vicki Stubing, the captain’s daughter.

“It’s really fun when you see the fictitious world and the real worlds collide,” Bienstock says. “Here comes Jill, meeting with Captain Paolo. Now you’ve got the TV scripted show version of the captain’s daughter meeting the real-life Captain.”

Bienstock said he reached out to a number of “Love Boat” stars, but scheduling was difficult to pull off for most. “For those two, everything just happened to line up. We were thrilled to have them.”

But one “Love Boat” staple that producers didn’t contact just yet was Charo. “In subsequent seasons, we can look at having some fun with people that appeared as guest stars on the original show,” Bienstock says.

The series opens with 12 singles, between 24 and 36 years old, hailing from across the country and Canada. They go on dates and compete in challenges to test their compatibility; as the show progresses and the boat stops in new ports, new singles are added while others must return to shore. Ultimately, one couple will win a cash prize and another trip.

“The idea that love is around the corner, and the corner happens to be somewhere in the Mediterranean, is really intoxicating,” Bienstock says. “And you have a married couple leading all this.”

“Jerry and Rebecca are naturally funny, and they have this great dynamic that obviously is 15 years of marriage in the making,” Culvenor says. “And you see that play out. You can almost imagine some of the discussions they must have when they’re driving in the car together or having dinner together, because they are so honest and open.”

To prepare for “The Real Love Boat,” Culvenor and Bienstock both went back and watched plenty of the original series for inspiration.

“I watched a ton of them. Oh my gosh, I watched a ton,” Bienstock says. “What struck me about the show that I loved is its innocence. Nothing works too hard. It’s a very natural, free flowing, fun show.” Added Culvenor: “I grew up in Australia, and the repeats of the show were on every afternoon when I’d get home from school. What I loved about that original was the adventure, the comedy and the world that it took you to. It felt so exotic. So that original was probably just sitting in my subconscious for years.”

She’s Not Below Deck Anymore! We Break Down Exactly Who The Real Love Boat 2022’s Hannah Ferrier Is

Reality tv fame isn't always smooth sailing.

hannah ferrier

Hannah Ferrier might have rocked the boat during her stint Below Deck Mediterranean , but we’re hyped to see her helm of The Real Love Boat Australia 2022 as the cruise director and onboard cupid.

The 36-year-old appeared on five seasons of the yacht spin-off before she was fired due to a prescription drug scandal (hold that thought, we’ll explain more in a sec)!

Hannah then took a two-year hiatus from reality TV, returning to Australia and welcoming her first child, Ava Grace with now-husband Josh Roberts ,

cruise director the real love boat

The couple tied the knot in March 2022, just 16 months after Ava’s birth. Adorably, their bub was even a flower girl at the wedding!

Hannah now returns to Aussie TV screens in the inaugural season of The Love Boat Australia 2022.

hannah ferrier the real love boat

“I just knew that when I did something after  Below Deck , I wanted it to make sense to me, to my life and to the audience. When  The Real Love Boat  came along I was like ‘um, hi?’ It all just clicked into place and made sense,” Hannah told 10Play .

Why Was Hannah Ferrier Fired From Below Deck Med ?

It’s been two years since Below Deck Med’s Captain Sandy Yawn unceremoniously sacked Hannah from her chief stewardess role.

ICYMI – Hannah was caught with undeclared prescription medication (Valium) and a legal CBD pen while sailing on international waters, leading to her dismissal.

hannah ferrier below deck med

“It was definitely a technicality because I hadn’t declared my medication,” Hannah told E! News at the time, explaining the situation was poorly handled by her colleagues, who initially told her to “flush” her drugs”.

“I was like, ‘Why would I flush my medication down the toilet?’ You shouldn’t put that stigma where prescription medications for mental illness and recreational drugs are treated in the same way,” she said.

While Captain Sandy pulled the pin on her long-time career, former co-star Malia White first alerted higher-ups about the medication.

below deck malia

Hannah and Malia often clashed on-screen, but the Australian star believes most viewers understood her perspective .

“I think for every nine positive comments I’d get one negative, or not even. It was very much in my favour. And I think was good because it’s an important conversation to have,” Hannah told the publication.

What Is Hannah Ferrier Doing on The Real Love Boat Australia 2022 ?

Hannah would have felt right at home sailing on  Princess Cruises  across the Mediterranean while filming The Real Love Boat .

In addition to her official title as “cruise director”, Hannah is responsible for ensuring that none of The Real Love Boat contestants ends up feeling like a fish out of water.

real love boat hosts

She will make her Network Ten debut during The Real Love Boat ‘s premiere on October 5 alongside her two co-hosts – Studio 10 ‘s  Daniel Doody  and Celebrity Apprentice Australia ‘s Darren McMullen .

Hannah and Daniel act as IRL cupids for the 21 contestants by setting up destination dates for the couples.

“A lot of these singles kind of go: ‘I want a guy who’s six-foot-two, tall dark and handsome, needs to have this and that’. It’s like ‘yeah, but that’s not working for you’, you know?” Hannah explained.

“That’s where [Daniel] and I come in. Just, like, okay. We want you to have a look at this guy and maybe open your mind a little bit to whether this could be a good fit for you!”
