Yep. Grand Princess is old. It was built in 1998. At that time it was the largest cruise ship in the world. It had a major flaw in that Skywalker's (an aft nightclub venue with wonderful aft viewing) was built of too heavy materials. That venue was later removed as unstable although Skywalker's was still in place in subsequent builds  of Grand Class ships but with lighter materials and, for the most part, farther forward.

Grand Princess may indeed be old but we are booked for 32 days on that ship starting in (very) late October of this year and have zero reservations about our booking. Don't let the "age" of Grand Princess worry you if you are considering booking a voyage.

Edit: We have never sailed Holland America. In fact, we have only ever sailed with Princess. We have only cruised 16 times (all with Princess for only a total of 196 days at sea) but have loved all of our cruises with Princess.

As for your original question which seems to be "Princess vs Holland America" I have no "real" info regarding Holland America. I can only offer the original "apocryphal" advice I received when I first started cruising: Carnival is "board shorts", Princess is 'Dockers", and Holland America is "Depends".

This is obviously " apocryphal" information but I actually took it to heart when I originally heard it and it has worked out well for me. 🤪

She also has:

Alfredos Pizza, a full promenade deck, and many other classic designs.

(Also) a “secret” staircase/inside joke.

She is one of my favorite ships.

Aloha. We have been blessed to sail both Princess and HAL numerous times. We took a Princess cruise from Hawaii to Tahiti and stayed post cruise in FP for some time.  Pleased with Princess. Have also taken long HAL voyages.  As you know they each have their own personalities and character. It is a tough call.  I think it comes down to the ship, cost, specific itinerary and then a good judgment call.  Keep us posted!

<<post removed by user>>

The Grand was the first cruise ship I ever stepped foot on. It's an older ship, sir, but it checks out.

For me, I'd go back to the Grand and definitely for some Alfredo's pizza.

I love the Grand. Have sailed her 11 times, the last time in June 2022 for a B2B Alaska. She is still in fine shape and I would sail her again in a heartbeat

Have not cruised with Princess but have cruised with HAL and Carnival.....we are HAL all the way.  Love the food and live entertainment.

Grayce

We were deciding between Princess and HAL for our Hawaian cruise next year.  It all came down to the itinerary.  HAL had a stop in Kona and an overnight in Honolulu.  We ended up going with HAL.  Before we booked, I did watch/read many reviews about HAL because we haven't sailed with them before.

PescadoAmarillo

I don’t think you can go wrong with either choice. We are frequent Princess cruisers who also have about 75 days on HAL. I love HAL for the size of their ships, the tiny sofas in even their inside cabins and their food choices, but I also love their classical music entertainment. Princess has more activities, and with a lot of sea days, you might appreciate that. And, of course, the biggest Princess selling point in my mind:  self serve passenger laundries.

Also, for the price you pay for Holland America, you can upgrade your cabin on Princess.

Rassa

I last travelled HAL 20 years ago for a month, so I am not really qualified to add my opinion other than saying we stopped because of the age group and now we are in that age group!  We really like cruising with Princess and RCCL.   I have cruised on the Grand post covid and we have 2 coming up in the next few months.   She is just a little tired looking but we like her.   As the oldest in the fleet, Princess ships have been going to P&O Aust.   P&O have revitalised the entertaining areas and the old Star and Golden are looking good here in Australia, with different names.  We are just hoping when the Grand is eventually sold off, that it home ports for P&O Aust., in Melb, Australia.

Wash your mouth out.....you already have my beloved Golden (and a few other grand class ships).  I'm holding on to the Grand Princess with threads.  By far, the Golden was the best out of the Grand and the Caribbean.

Oh dear, we were on her in the last month and had a great time .... sorry to say.  I understand where you are coming from but I am trying to prise your hands off the Grand.  I am not the only Melbournian to want this and obviously not the only person to want the Grand.   I nevertheless, wish you well in keeping her.

Thanks

That is one of the things we are worried about on HAL 😄 . We are used to being able to do our own laundry.

We sailed on the grand from Vancouver to Auckland last October.  I had sailed on her previously  when she was brand new   I thought she looked great. I have sailed on HAL many times but only as crew so I don’t know the passenger experience so much, I prefer the Princess offerings

To me this is an important point. I was appalled when I found that other cruise lines don't have any self service laundry facilities.

True, and this is the only reason we did our long cruises on Princess. I was willing to do hand laundry every single night on the Norwegian Spirit for 12 days, but 120 days of that would have gotten old. Some of the older HAL ships had them and I believe that Azamara might have kept them in their R-class ships (like the Pacific Princess), but they certainly don’t exist on most cruise ships.

Are you comparing Grand’s 32 day to Koningsdam 35 day?  If so, I find Koningsdam’s itinerary light years better than Princess.

If you don’t like to go to evening shows in the main theater featuring production as well as guest entertainers every night, you don’t like going to game shows every night, and enjoy listening to “canned” lectures given by the HAL combination cruise/excursion director, HAL would be the better choice.

However, since we like going to shows every night in the theater, watching game shows, and listening to professional lecturers, we now choose PCL every time over HAL, even though we are 4 star mariners. But that’s just us.

9 minutes ago, Ken the cruiser said: …and enjoy listening to “canned” lectures given by the HAL combination cruise/excursion director,

Yes, HAL does disappoint with their combination cruise director/destination specialist. And their cruise directors are pretty (very) sedate. It’s hard to fully grasp what an impact that has on a cruise until you experience it. But I love their musical entertainment options.

No one mentioned that Princess has Hawaiian Cultural Ambassadors on board.  This was a program developed by Cruise Director Dave Cole and ELUA (Tiki Dave and Leialoha).  Since then, Princess has hired a couple more ambassadors for each voyage.

They offer Hula and ukulele lessons.  They give the port talks (not buy these shore excursion sales from tour desk).  They have many Hawaiiana lectures (by naturalist).  It is a complete experience when doing a Hawaii voyage.

It has two stops in Hawaii   It’s a garbage itinerary. Princess is more about the sea days than the ports.  I’d rather see Hawaii than take a hula lesson.

Regarding the musical entertainment options with 2500+ pax onboard, how many can fit in any one of the Music Walk entertainment lounges?

You can sail on a lavish cruise from Vancouver to Tahiti, Hawaii and New Zealand at a steal

Princess Cruises takes guests down the ruggedly beautiful Pacific Coast en route to California before sailing to Hawaii. The voyage includes exotic stops such as Tahiti and American Samoa before disembarking in New Zealand.

Travellers looking for an epic transpacific voyage can cruise from Vancouver to New Zealand with multiple stops in coveted destinations.

Princess Cruises takes guests down the ruggedly beautiful Pacific Coast en route to California before sailing to Hawaii. The voyage includes exotic stops such as Tahiti and American Samoa before disembarking in New Zealand.

Passengers will sail on the five-star Royal Princess, which offers a range of exciting amenities, including Princess Cruises’ largest top-deck pool that features an evening water and light show, mini-golf, movies under the stars, renowned spa treatments, a disco, nine bars, tennis and much more.

The cruise overnights in Vancouver at Canada Place on Sept. 21 before spending a day in Victoria on Sept. 22. Passengers will then have a couple of days to enjoy the ship before stopping in San Francisco on Sept. 25. The Golden City is home to several popular attractions that can be seen in a day, including excursions to Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge.

After one more day at sea, guests will spend a day in San Deigo before stopping in sunny Los Angeles on Sept. 28.

The voyage includes five days at sea to reach the tropical Hawaiian Islands, where it stops in Honolulu on Oahu and the Big Island.

Passengers will enjoy another five days on the ship before spending two days in Tahiti and one in Moorea on the Society Islands on Oct. 12. After three more sea days, the ship spends a day in Pago Pago, American Samoa.

The cruise includes three more days at sea, crossing the international dateline before sailing into Tauranga, New Zealand on Oct. 21. It disembarks on Oct. 22 in Auckland.

Cruise from Vancouver to Auckland, New Zealand with Princess Cruises

There are four stateroom categories to choose from, including the interior, balcony, mini-suite, and suite. No ocean views are available on this sailing (see slide two).

The interior stateroom is the best option for folks travelling on a budget. While they won't enjoy any fresh air in their rooms, there are plenty of places around the ship to enjoy the view or stand outside. The lowest price for two people is $6,727.86 or $3,363.93 per person. This total breaks down to a per-diem, per-person amount of $112.13 (see slide three).

  • Related:  Here's how you can sail on dozens of Vancouver cruises for $49 a day

Travellers in parties of three or more can also take advantage of some discounted offers.

The cost for the 30-day cruise includes transportation on a beautiful five-star vessel, meals, entertainment, snacks and lodging. The only thing it doesn’t factor in is alcohol, Wi-Fi or tips, but you may purchase packages to reduce the price.

Flights home from New Zealand shouldn't depart the same day the cruise disembarks in Auckland. Plus, "Middle Earth" is home to several shooting locations from the Lord of the Rings trilogy and other intriguing attractions and places you might want to explore.

One-way flights from Auckland start at around $880 and include a stop before Vancouver. However, you can also create a multi-stop itinerary that includes several days in Honolulu, Oahu.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 94 of the 2,532 guests on Sapphire Princess reported being ill during its April 5 cruise, along with 20 crew members. The round-trip cruise, which left from Los Angeles with stops in Hawaii and the South Pacific, will end on May 7, according to CruiseMapper .

On Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas, 67 of its 1,993 guests reported being ill in addition to two crew members during a cruise that ended April 22, according to the CDC . The two-week voyage sailed from Tampa, Florida to Los Angeles with stops in countries like Colombia and Panama, according to CruiseMapper .

In both outbreaks, the guests and crew members’ main symptoms were diarrhea and vomiting.

Princess, Royal Caribbean and the ships’ crews implemented heightened cleaning and disinfection measures and isolated those who were sick, among other steps, the health agency said.

"Onboard the most current sailing of Sapphire Princess, there have been a small number of cases of mild gastrointestinal illness among passengers, the cause likely is the common but contagious virus called Norovirus," a Princess spokesperson told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. "At the first sign of an increase in the numbers of passengers reporting to the medical center with gastrointestinal illness, we immediately initiated additional enhanced sanitization procedures to interrupt the person-to-person spread of this virus. Our sanitization program, developed in coordination with the CDC, includes disinfection measures, isolation of ill passengers and communication to passengers about steps they can take to stay well while onboard."

Royal Caribbean did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The CDC has logged six outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness on cruise ships that met its threshold for public notification since the beginning of the year. Norovirus was listed as the causative agent in five, while one was unknown.

The illness is often associated with cruise ships but outbreaks occur in communities on land as well, according to Dr. Sarah E. Hochman, a hospital epidemiologist and the section chief of infectious diseases at NYU Langone Health’s Tisch Hospital.

“There's not something special or unique about cruise ships,” she said. “It's really any type of congregate setting, but it's also happening out in the community on a much smaller scale among households and household contacts. It just doesn't come to the attention of public health as much as it does for larger congregate settings.”

Hochman said the virus is “incredibly infectious” and congregate settings tend to have many shared surfaces, such as handrails in cruise ship stairwells or elevators. “And so, if you just have one person who's shedding the virus and touches the surface and then someone else touches it and then touches their mouth, that's how it can spread in those types of settings.”

Alcohol-based hand sanitizer isn't as effective against norovirus, and Hochman emphasized that washing hands with soap and water “will do a lot to prevent the spread.”

The news comes after more than two dozen Silversea Cruises guests got sick in a gastrointestinal illness outbreak on the luxury line’s Silver Nova ship during a sailing that began in late March.
