Frasers Group opens new Cruise flagship in Glasgow

Frasers Group opens new Cruise flagship in Glasgow

// Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group opens the doors to its new Cruise flagship in Glasgow today

// located on ingram street, it showcases collections from luxury fashion brands like gucci, burberry, balmain & more, // cruise is the sister brand to frasers group’s luxury retail fascia flannels.

Frasers Group has opened the doors to its new Cruise flagship in Glasgow in the latest chapter of its wider elevation strategy and ongoing commitment to luxury retail.

Situated on Ingram Street, the 25,000sq ft store store showcases collections from some of the world’s most exclusive luxury fashion houses across four floors and a mezzanine.

Cruise’s brand portfolio features emerging designers and established brands including Gucci, Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Balmain and Burberry.

“After 18 months of planning and a multi-million-pound investment today we open this newly refurbished Cruise store,” Frasers Group head of elevation Michael Murray said.

“Cruise Glasgow to those in Scotland, is known as an institution of luxury specialist retailing and thus, we’re pleased to be raising-the-bar for retail in the city.”

Frasers Group said the opening of the refurbished store demonstrated its commitment to investing in bricks-and-mortar and reinventing the luxury sector.

The Mike Ashley-owned firm is pushing ahead with an expansion scheme that features scores of new stores opening yearly alongside a dedicated multi-million-pound refurbishment program of Frasers Group’s existing store portfolio.

This includes plans to invest in the Flannels fascia, Cruise’s sister brand.

Frasers Group also recently opened the doors to its very first Frasers department store in Wolverhampton in time with the reopening of non-essential retail in England and Wales.

The new Frasers fascia is the luxury offshoot of House of Fraser, and offers beauty, fashion, homewares, premium and contemporary accessories and designer childrenswear from a range of 120 brands.

Speculation has been rife that Frasers Group is eyeing up several House of Fraser stores – and other possible locations – to be converted into Frasers, as part of Ashley’s ambitions to turn the department store chain into “the Harrods of the high street”.

Situated on Ingram Street, the 25,000 sq ft store, spanning across four floors and a mezzanine, showcases collections from international luxury fashion houses such as Gucci, Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Balmain and Burberry.

Cruise is the sister brand to Frasers Group’s luxury retailer Flannels. It now has four stores in the UK, based in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, and Derby.

The investment is part of the business’ wider elevation strategy and ongoing commitment to luxury retail experiences, spearheaded by Frasers Group’s Head of Elevation, Michael Murray.

Murray said of the opening: “After 18 months of planning and a multi-million-pound investment, today we open this newly refurbished Cruise store. Cruise to those in Scotland, is known as an institution of luxury specialist retailing and thus, we’re pleased to be raising the bar for retail in the city.”

Jack Bridges, partner at London and Miami-based designer Argent, which designed the store, said: “The ambition when designing this store was to create a luxury retail destination which can evolve with the seasons. You enter into a space adorned with bold prints contrasted with translucent and reflective materials for a dynamic futuristic feel. The palette consists of pastels and playful colours to give the store an opulent yet young and contemporary feel. With the sleek architectural design, the new store will become a global luxury playground."

Cruise Outfits for Women

Having trouble figuring out what exactly to wear on a cruise? You’ve come to the right place. In this post, I’ll share cruise outfits for women that I’ve worn on my past cruises as a Millennial cruiser, and give you inspiration on your cruise wardrobe.

In the past few years, I’ve been on 8+ cruises, and each time I’ve perfected all the outfits you’d need to pack for your cruise.

Cruise Outfits

I’ve been on all kinds of itineraries from shorter Caribbean cruises to long Mediterranean cruises, and from my experience, the cruise outfits generally stay the same.

You’ll need to consider what you’ll wear on the ship during the day, what you’ll wear on port days, and evening attire- which I’ll cover in this post.

So whether this is your first cruise or if you are a seasoned cruiser, I hope you find some new inspiration for your upcoming cruise with these new cruise outfits.

Read More: – For a more comprehensive list of what to pack for a cruise, read my ultimate cruise packing list that covers everything you’d need to bring (plus things you wouldn’t even think about but make a HUGE difference)

Daytime Cruise Outfits

Embarkation day cruise outfits.

Cruise Outfits

The first day of your cruise is exciting! You’re getting accustomed to your new home at sea with lots of exploring and finding a delicious cocktail.

Now before the fun of exploring, keep in mind you’ll be doing a lot of waiting around to get on the ship, plus going through security, and perhaps waiting for your room to be ready.

For embarkation day I would plan on wearing a casual outfit with lighter materials with layers- or even your airplane outfit . Something lightweight, yet appropriate to wear wandering around the ship.

I wouldn’t worry too much about what to wear on Embarkation day, but having a swimsuit ready to go is a great idea.

Pro Tip: Wear a swimsuit underneath your clothing with a stylish coverup and take advantage of the resort deck pool while everyone gets settled or hits up the buffet. It will feel like you’ve added an extra day on to your cruise!

What to wear on a Cruise Sea Day

Cruise Outfits

Stick to casual clothing during the day on a cruise. A typical sea day on a cruise begins with breakfast, you can wear casual items like t-shirts, jean shorts, etc.

I like to wear cute sets, or shorts and a cute top that’s easy to throw on when heading to the breakfast buffet. This is the least formal part of your cruise, but I would avoid walking around in your pajamas .

what to wear on a cruise

After that, you’ll probably walk around the ship or head to the resort deck which you’ll need to bring a bathing suit and beach coverup .

I always like to bring a larger tote bag so I can stick in all my essentials that I would need for a full pool day like sunscreen, a book, a water bottle, and extra clothes if I decide to swim.

Just think about wearing classic resort casual wear for the daytime.

Not sure what resort casual wear is? I have a full post that explains it. Read What is resort casual wear & how to wear it .

Now in the early evening after lounging on the resort deck, I like to wear a nice sundress or something a little dressy to have a sunset cocktail in. Thankfully for us ladies, I can usually wear the same dress to dinner without a problem.

What to Wear on a Caribbean Cruise Excursion

Cruise Outifs

I find a lot of Caribbean shore excursions involve lots of water activities like swimming & snorkeling, or boat excursions.

For a Caribbean cruise excursion, I would wear a swimsuit plus a coverup , and additional dry clothes if you want to change into something more comfortable after your day in the water, especially for warm destinations.

If you are not headed on a water excursion, wear casual clothing like sundresses , shirts, and shorts in light breathable materials like linen, cotton, or jersey.

Plus a comfortable pair of shoes you can easily walk around in for different terrain.

I took a cooking class in St. Kitts on a cruise excursion. I wore a casual top and shorts and everyone else wore something similar. Keep in mind that Caribbean islands are hot and humid.

What to Wear on a Mediterranean Cruise Excursion

Here are some Cruise outfit ideas I wore on my Mediterranean cruise excursions in Italy, Greece, Croatia, and Montenegro.

Cruise Outfits Excursion

If you are going on a Mediterranean cruise, your ports of call and excursions tend to be a bit different than a Caribbean Cruise.

Instead of mostly swim & snorkel excursions you’d find on a Caribbean cruise, Mediterranean cruises have more city sightseeing excursions that involve a lot of walking , touring, and being in a city center.

For example, if you stop in Naples Itay, you could explore the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Naples, and even Pompei which all involve different kinds of daytime outfits.

I like to wear lightweight breathable dresses and comfortable walking shoes with a larger day bag to keep all my essentials inside.

birkenstock arizona big buckle sandal

Surprisingly my Birkenstock Arizona sandals were my go-to shoe on all my excursions. I even climbed a mountain in Kotor Montenegro in them and they were still comfortable afterward.

Evening Cruise Outfits

evening cruise outfits

To be honest, I think that the ladies have an easier time with evening cruise outfits because mostly anything goes as long as it’s dressy. Darker-colored sundresses , cocktail dresses , or even pants with a dressy top will work.

Men on the other hand have more rules like long pants and collared shirts.

Like I previously mentioned, after lounging at the pool deck, I like to get dressed up in a nice sundress to have a sunset cocktail before dinner. I usually head straight to dinner in the same dress and never had any problems.

Casual Dinner Outfits

I find that a lot more cruises are ditching formal dinners and instead have an “evening chic” dress code which can mean dressing elegant and sophisticated in your way.

Here are some examples of “casual” dinner cruise outfits. Keep in mind that I like to dress up no matter what the dress code is.

Cruise Outfits Evening

Here is a great example of a casual dinner outfit that doesn’t involve a dress. A pair of nice dark pants and a dressy top and flats will do the job for casual nights.

Formal Dinner Outfits

Here are some examples of formal dinner cruise outfits for the main dining room I’ve worn on recent cruises:

formal cruise outfits

Some cruise lines have “ formal ” nights, but even in recent years the strictness of the dress code has become more lax . Formal dress codes for ladies include cocktail dresses, elegant skirts, and evening-wear blouses.

But if you still want to wear a formal evening gown, it’s welcome. It’s a great excuse to dress up a little.

Double-check which cruise line you are cruising with to see the exact evening dress code.

What to wear on a cruise

No matter if you are going on a Caribbean Cruise or a Mediterranean cruise, here are things you should pack for your next cruise.

Pack sundresses to wear during the day, early evening, and perhaps dinner. These can be flowy maxi dresses or shorter styles. My favorite Amazon Maxi dress looks more expensive than it is and works great on a cruise.

Bonus tip: find dresses in non-wrinkle materials such as jersey material so you won’t have to worry about trying to get the wrinkles out.

Swimwear & Cover-ups:

what to wear on a cruise

You will be living in a swimsuit & coverup on your cruise, so be sure you bring your favorites. I love this one piece from Amazon . It’s flattering on any body type, comes in multiple colors, and looks expensive.

This beach coverup from Amazon is also one of my favorites. It’s in a nice cotton gauze-like material and looks so sophisticated.

Lightweight Jacket / Scarf

No matter when or where your cruise is, a lightweight jacket is a good idea for added warmth on cooler nights or heavy inside air conditioning. This could be a denim jacket, a lightweight sweater, or shall.

I’d recommend going for an extra-large scarf or sweater that still can be worn over your shoulders during the evening. It’s not too casual and looks dressy, while still keeping you warm.

Dark Pants / Jeans:

Be sure to bring a dark pair of pants or jeans if you don’t want to wear dresses to dinner. Dark pant goes with any dressy top, and it’s a basic you can wear more than once on your cruise.

Evening Dress

A nice evening dress is essential for any cruise. I find that a little black dress is a perfect item to bring because it’s dressy and easy to pack.

Some of my favorite evening dresses from Amazon .

cruise menswear glasgow

A pair of sandals that you can easily slip on and off are a must. Ideally, bring a pair that you don’t mind getting wet – especially if you plan on going to the resort pool deck or any water excursion.

You can bring heels, but keep in mind that you’ll be doing plenty of walking on cruise ships, and most of the time they are carpeted. If your heels are uncomfortable on land, they will be uncomfortable at sea.

A great compromise is a shorter kitten heel, a wedge, or a dressy flat.

A pair of white sneakers go with everything and are comfortable to put on after wearing sandals for so many days. These are great to have for strenuous activities, adventurous excursions, and exploring ports of call.

Read next :  23 Best White Sneakers For Women You Can Wear All Day

Sun Hat & Pair of Sunglasses

Don’t forget your accessories like a sun hat and a pair of sunglasses. To avoid your hat getting blown away by the wind, find one with a chin strap.

canvas tote bag

You’d be surprised at how many things you need to bring with you when you leave your cruise cabin.

I love bringing a stylish tote bag to throw all my essentials for the day inside like sunscreen, book, phone or tablet, an extra change of clothes, towel, etc.

I recommend this stylish tote from Amazon that I wore on my recent cruise. Or I love a sturdy canvas tote that goes with any outfit.

Mens Cruise Outfits

I can’t leave the men hanging, so here are some men’s cruise outfit ideas:

Men’s Day Outfits

During the day, men can wear casual clothing like swim trunks and a neutral shirt that is acceptable for the breakfast buffet and the resort deck.

Men’s Evening Cruise Outfits

Cruise Outfits Men

Now unfortunately for the men, the evening cruise line dress code applies mostly to men.

Cruises suggest men wear in general long pants or nice jeans, a collared dress shirt, and dress shoes.

For Formal Nights : Men should wear dress slacks, a collared shirt, and a sports coat. A tux or suit is optional, but double-check the specifics from your cruise line.

Cruise Outfits FAQ:

How many outfits to pack per day on a cruise.

I would pack two outfits per day on a cruise- something to wear during the day either on board or at a port of call, and something a bit dressier for the evening. Now you can wear a swimsuit & coverup more than once on your vacation, so keep that in mind when you’re packing.

Do you dress up for dinner on a cruise?

Generally yes, you do dress up for dinner on a cruise. However, a lot of cruises are dropping the mandatory “formal” night where you had to dress to the nines in black tie attire. Instead, you’ll find smart casual, or evening chic dress codes in place for dinner.

Cruise OUtfits for Ladies

What are the best clothes to wear on a cruise?

You’ll want to wear something comfortable and casual during the day. Don’t forget your swimsuit for excursions or lounging at the resort deck. And add something a bit dressy for the evening.

What NOT to wear on a cruise?

Now there are a few things not to wear on a cruise that pertain mostly to the evening. Flip flops, swimsuits tank tops, and shorts are generally not allowed inside restaurants during dinner.

Another thing to keep in mind is your footwear. Cruise ships are huge and you’ll be doing a surprising amount of walking (especially if your cabin is on the opposite of the buffet) Don’t wear shoes you can’t walk in like super high heels , etc.

Let’s Sum it up on Cruise Outfits

I hope you found this post helpful for packing for your next cruise vacation. To sum it up here are things you need to think about when packing for cruise outfits.

  • During the day you’ll want to bring something to wear around the cruise ship. Think comfortable and casual.
  • Bring a swimsuit + coverup for days on the resort deck.
  • I always recommend bringing something easy to throw on for quick runs to the buffet, especially in the morning for coffee!

Pro tip: bring a reusable insulated water bottle to fill up with coffee, water (or cocktails) to keep warm or cold throughout your cruise.

  • During the evening pack something a bit dressier. For ladies that can be dark pants and a dressy top or a nice dress. Men should bring long pants and a collared shirt for dinner time.

Cruisewear for men: What guys should pack for a cruise

Mature man using laptop on ship deck

Perhaps one of the most understated joys of cruising is that you only have to unpack once. The challenge lies in what to pack in the first place. While some may say that guys have it easier than women, choosing the right cruisewear for men can be just as tricky.

No matter the destination, men will need certain clothing essentials for a cruise that they might not need for other vacations. This can range from attire for formal or themed nights to the right outfits for a range of activities in port.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

If you're wondering exactly what you need to wear on a cruise — or need to assist your husband, father, son, partner or male friend — we've got you covered with helpful specifics on the perfect cruisewear for men. Read on to discover what guys should pack for their next cruise.

What should men wear during the day on a cruise?

cruise menswear glasgow

Most cruises are casual getaways during the day. Pack and dress for the kind of activities you'll enjoy on board, whether it's lounging at the pool (a rash guard, swim trunks, flip-flops and a hat), sweating it out in the gym (athleticwear and sneakers) or hanging out with a book or card game in a lounge (shorts or jeans and a comfortable top).

Daytime dress can be a bit more elevated on Europe cruises, as well as ships with older or wealthier clientele. This more refined style can best be described as resort casual, where you'll find mostly polos and collared shirts during the day. Linen or khaki pants or Bermuda shorts complete the look.

Don't forget to pack appropriate clothing for activities in port. You'll want to dress in layers, bring a hat for sun protection, a jacket or vest for cool mornings or windy afternoons, and wear sturdy shoes for hikes or sneakers for exploring a town. Tote around beach flip-flops for a quick change if you're mixing up beach time with excursions that require more walking.

What's acceptable attire for men for dinner on casual evenings?

Across all cruise lines, table service dinners will always feel more elevated, often the only time of day when a dress code is clearly communicated. That said, casual evenings have become more casual, especially on the big-ship lines – which can be a relief to men who don't want to schlep their workweek suits on vacation with them.

As a general guideline, if you're at a table service restaurant for dinner (whether it be the main dining room or a specialty restaurant on board), men should dress in a collared shirt and long pants. Jeans tend to be acceptable on casual evenings, as long as they're not riddled with holes, and on some lines, like always-relaxed Norwegian Cruise Line, a nice T-shirt is fine. (A fitted T-shirt with a jacket over it is never a problem.)

What you can't wear, according to the dinner dress code on most lines, are bathing suits, cutoff jeans, sleeveless shirts and baseball hats.

Shorts are an ambiguous, often frowned upon, option for evening attire. Most dress codes won't specifically prohibit shorts, leaving it up to the individual. A pair of chino, pleated or linen shorts can suffice for a more refined look, especially when paired with a collared shirt. Cutoffs, denim, cargo shorts and sports shorts at any seated, table service dinner are a no-go.

Related: Cruise packing list: The ultimate guide to what to pack for a cruise

As for shoes, sneakers can be permissible on nonformal nights, but footwear like beach flip-flops are often prohibited.

While teens should emulate the grown-ups for dinnerwear, most cruise lines don't fuss about the dress code for younger boys. If you can't get your kid into a polo shirt and khakis, a clean shirt and nonathletic shorts will suffice.

If you'd rather spend your evening in gym shorts and flip-flops, the buffet and other fast casual or counter-service venues will have more relaxed dress codes at night. Or, you can order room service and enjoy dinner in your bathrobe.

Are formal nights still a thing? Will I need to bring a tuxedo?

cruise menswear glasgow

Most major cruise lines hold formal nights, usually twice on a weeklong sailing. These days, the theme is more "dress your best" or "elegant" than strictly formal. Even on big-ship cruise lines, guests find it fun to don a more upscale look, pose for a professional photo shoot and enjoy dinner, drinks and perhaps a show in style.

Formal nights on most lines don't mean black tie. On casual lines, such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean, men can get away with a button-down, long-sleeve shirt, khakis, nice shoes and no tie. On more upscale lines, guys should pack a suit or at least a sports coat and slacks. Ties are usually optional.

When in doubt, pack a jacket you can always take off if no one else is wearing one.

Some cruise lines, however, skew a bit fancier. Cunard features black-tie galas on its sailings that are often themed (think Roaring '20s and Masquerade Ball). P&O Cruises typically has signature black-tie evenings, and many smaller luxury lines (including Silversea, Seabourn and Regent) will host black-tie evenings throughout extended sailings.

While full tuxedo regalia on black-tie evenings is encouraged (satin lapel, pocket trim, satin side stripe down the leg of the trousers), a dark suit and necktie pass muster.

Related: Bow ties and ballgowns: 5 reasons I always dress up on cruise ship formal nights

Also, culturally appropriate formal attire is always an option, such as Scottish kilt suits or military dress uniforms.

If you're traveling with family, boys and teenagers are required to dress in accordance with the guidelines for dining at table service restaurants on formal nights as well, but the stakes are lower. The minimum requirement for kids is nice slacks and a collared shirt. Teens should opt for dress shoes, but younger boys can get away with sneakers.

If you're taking family photos, tuxedos, suits, blazers and ties are not required but add flare and personality to a look. Get creative with kids who prefer comfort; put babies in a tuxedo-print onesie and young boys in an adorable sweater vest on formal evenings.

On some lines, such as Norwegian Cruise Line , elegant night is always optional.

Do guys need to dress up on theme nights?

Many cruise lines will have themed evenings or parties where you might want to dress the part. If you're attending a themed cruise (such as a gay cruise or music cruise ), be prepared for costume parties on multiple nights.

Popular theme nights are wide-ranging, though the most recurring are tropical parties (Hawaiian shirts encouraged), '80s nights and white nights (all-white attire).

Disney Cruise Line passengers regularly dress up for its hallmark Pirate Night. Virgin Voyages ' Scarlet Night encourages guests to don red attire.

Themed attire on theme nights is not required for dining and is opt-in fun. If you're traveling with a group, organizing matching costumes or outfits can enhance the fun and make for great vacation photos. Check with your cruise line about which theme nights you should expect.

If you're sailing on a tropical itinerary, you're going to want to make sure you pack at least one Hawaiian floral shirt. The Columbia Men's Tamiami Short-sleeve Shirt is a top choice, with SPF 40 sun protection and nice ventilation.

A shirt for hot days in port

At sea, you've got the benefit of the ocean breezes, but tropical ports can get sweltering hot, especially in the summer months. Opt for the Vineyard Vines Men's Destin Stripe Sankaty Performance Polo for its moisture-wicking and quick-drying fabric, along with its SPF 30 sun protection.

A pair of travel pants

The best pair of travel pants balance comfort and function and are acceptable on board and in port. The 33,000ft Men's Waterproof Pants are surprisingly comfortable, breathable and have a nice flexible give to them. They also feature a commendable 10,000mm waterproof rating, great for coverage if you get stuck exploring in the rain.

A pair of sandals for most occasions

From the pool deck to the streets of a port, the right pair of sandals signify vacation. The sophisticated yet practical Ecco Men's Flowt Luxe Slide Sandals are an ideal match for days spent walking, yet have an elegant design that can fit well into a smart, casual dinner on board. If the dinner dress code has a strict no-sandals policy, the Cole Haan Men's 2.Zerogrand Penny Loafers are a great nautical alternative.

The ideal layer for windy nights on deck

When you're out at sea it can get windy, especially at night. Pack The North Face Men's Cyclone Windbreaker Jacket , which features a compact, lightweight and durable design. The jacket is windproof, water-repellent and has UPF 40+.

Water shoes to protect your feet

If you're planning for any water-based adventures on your cruise, a high-quality pair of water shoes will help protect your feet. Merrell Men's Wildwood Aerosport Water Shoes are light, comfortable and breathable. They also offer great traction on slippery rocks, shell-ridden beaches and the ship's decks.

The best men's cruise travel accessories

  • Accessory storage: Keep your neckties crisp with this sturdy case for storage and travel. Or, fit all your formal night accouterments in this men's accessories storage and travel case .
  • A compact on-the-go bag: The Bellroy Mini Sling Bag is great for roving both the ship and port with enough room to store your cellphone, ship pass and a few essentials such as lip balm, sunscreen and hand sanitizer.
  • Shoe maintenance: These quality shoe bags keep your street and deck-worn shoes separate from your clothes. SneakErasers are a great travel accessory to buff out any scuff marks you may pick up on your journey.
  • Staying hydrated: A reusable water bottle is essential on a cruise, especially while in port. The Hydro Flask water bottle is a favorite for its durable design and temperature retention. Cruise lines allow reusable bottles, though they must be empty when boarding.
  • Express yourself: Stretch beyond your normal style — you're on a ship! Cruise life gives you the freedom to add some character and flair to your look, so pack some fun accessories like these nautical cuff links , colorful lapel pins or a flashy hat .

Bottom line

It's not "anything goes," but you'll find more flexibility than ever when it comes to cruise line dress codes. When in doubt, it's better to be overdressed than underdressed, especially when arriving for a seated dinner. Better to pack the tie and jacket and ditch them if no one else is wearing them than to risk awkward conversations with the crew or side-eye from other diners if you're not in compliance with the attire policy.

And if casual is the only way you wish to dress on vacation, know you can always go to the buffet or order room service, and you won't go hungry for want of khakis and a button-down shirt.

UConn outlasts Alabama, will face Purdue for NCAA title

Donovan Clingan throws it down on one end, blocks it on the other then throws down the finishing slam late vs. Alabama. (0:25)

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- If there's one play from UConn' s win over Alabama on Saturday night that typified the Huskies' run toward back-to-back national championships, it wasn't a Donovan Clingan blocked shot or an Alex Karaban transition 3-pointer.

It was Tristen Newton , calmly standing off to the side chewing his gum, then slowly working his way back to the ball to receive a pass and bury a 3-pointer to give UConn a nine-point lead midway through the second half.

Aside from having the nation's best offense and a top-five defense, one thing that has separated the Huskies is their unflappability. They have supreme confidence in what they're doing. Eventually their shots will start falling. Eventually the opponent's shooting will regress to the mean. Eventually the better team will win -- and this season, the better team, far more often than not, has been UConn.

And that was the case again on Saturday night, as the overall 1-seed Huskies advanced to their second straight national championship game with an 86-72 win over 4-seed Alabama.

"We don't crumble," Clingan said. "Basketball is a game of runs. We stay composed, stay together and just keep playing as a team, and they're not going to make every shot."

UConn will face fellow 1-seed Purdue, which beat NC State in the first Final Four matchup, in Monday's national title game. According to ESPN BET, UConn opened as a 6.5-point favorite vs. the Boilermakers.

While UConn's 30-0 run last week against Illinois was a lightning-in-a-bottle scenario, it did highlight a major theme this season: The Huskies just don't stop attacking. And most teams run out of steam before UConn does.

"Our identity is to be pretty relentless," coach Dan Hurley said. "We might not break you for 18 minutes, 25 minutes, but at some point if what we're doing at both ends and on the backboard is at a high level, it just becomes hard for the other team to sustain it."

The first 10 minutes of Saturday's second half were the epitome of a blow-for-blow sequence. The first team that failed to counter was likely going to lose. The Huskies started the period with four straight points to open up their biggest lead of the game, an eight-point edge. Alabama immediately responded with a 7-0 run, then UConn countered with a 7-0 run of its own -- and Alabama came right back with a 7-0 run and ultimately tied the game at 56 with 12:41 remaining.

UConn scored the next eight points and Alabama didn't get closer than six points the rest of the way.

"It's body blows, it's body blows," Hurley said. "It's continue to guard, continue to rebound, execute our offense. Eventually there will be a breaking-point opportunity that will present itself, especially in this tournament."

The Crimson Tide were able to withstand most of UConn's runs because they couldn't miss from 3, hitting nine of their first 12 attempts from behind the arc. But they made just one of their next nine 3s as UConn continued to score timely baskets or get clutch stops when needed.

"I think it's disheartening for the other team because they've seen it," Hurley said. "They've seen us do it a lot."

Alabama posed a bigger challenge for UConn than any team the Huskies have faced in this year's NCAA tournament. The Crimson Tide were making shots early and forcing UConn's defense to rotate out of position, especially when star center Clingan was out of the game. Clingan, who had 18 points and four blocks, blocked a shot on Alabama's first possession and controlled the paint at that end of the floor.

But when he went to the bench, Alabama was able to take advantage, scoring a quick 10 points on its first four possessions. After UConn trailed for just 28 seconds in its first four games of this year's NCAA tournament, Alabama led the Huskies for almost five minutes in the first half of Saturday's game. UConn also faced its largest deficit of the tournament when the Tide opened up a 23-18 lead with 11:09 remaining in the first half.

"It's a grind-it-out game. We can't be too high, we can't be too low," said Karaban, who had 14 points and two key blocks on Alabama star Mark Sears . "We're not making shots, we just got to stay focused, stay locked in. We know what we're capable of as a team, we know what the other team is capable of too ... We knew that they were going to have their runs; we just had to respond with our runs."

Alabama hasn't been shy about its identity and what got the team to the Final Four: 3-point shooting. The Crimson Tide made 16 shots from behind the arc in the regional final against Clemson and had made at least 11 3s in three of their four NCAA tournament games.

In the first half against UConn, the recipe didn't change. Three of Alabama's first four field goals were 3-pointers, including a Grant Nelson triple on the Tide's first possession. They shot 8-for-11 from the perimeter in the first half. Earlier in the week, Alabama coach Nate Oats said he wanted to "let them fly" and didn't mind if his players approached 50 3-point attempts in a game if that's how the defense played them. So while the high percentage from 3 kept Alabama in the game, the number of attempts (23 for the game) provided optimism for Hurley -- and was a concern for Oats.

"We knew they were going to try to run us off, be physical," Oats said. "Yeah, 23 is not ideal. We'd rather be pushing more like mid-30s on 3s. But they were obviously going to try to take us off the line. When they took us off the line, we drove it in. They did a better job forcing us to take more non-rim 2s than we probably have all year. ... Almost a third of our shots ended up being non-rim 2s. That's not how we typically play."

For UConn, it was Clingan and fellow projected first-rounder Stephon Castle who willed the Huskies into the lead. Castle, the five-star freshman, was assigned to defend Sears and held him scoreless for the first 6:38 while scoring 13 points of his own. The Crimson Tide were giving Castle -- a 26.2% 3-point shooter on the season -- plenty of space on the offensive end, with Nelson cheating off him to help clog the lane around Clingan. Castle, who finished with a game-high 21 points, responded by burying two early 3s and showing plenty of aggressiveness driving to the rim.

"I noticed it like the first play of the game when we were trying to run a set and the guy was guarding me in the paint. I tried to take advantage of it early," Castle said. "I wouldn't say it was motivation. I would just say it was kind of a disrespect on their end just to guard that far back."

Clingan and Castle bought UConn enough time for veteran guards Newton and Cam Spencer -- the Huskies' two stalwarts all season -- to get their offense going. Newton scored five straight late in the first half, and then Spencer hit a couple of shots to help the Huskies open up a 42-35 lead with 1:15 left until halftime.

With a potential game-changing run looming -- the 30-0 avalanche against Illinois happened just one week ago -- it was Sears who kept Alabama within arm's reach going into the break. He hit a corner 3 with 50 seconds left and then a leaner in the lane as time expired to cut UConn's lead to 44-40 at the end of the first half.

"We have the experience from last year," Karaban said. "Although we dominated teams last year, we still had the experience of playing against 75,000 people, and really the venue and the pressure that brings with the Final Four. The experience never really rattled us. We knew we just had to stay together and respond."

UConn is now 40 minutes from becoming the first back-to-back national champion since Florida in 2006 and 2007. The Huskies' streak of NCAA tournament wins by double digits also remains intact, as they've now won all 11 tournament games over the past two seasons by double digits.

"We make a hard tournament look easy," Hurley said. "It's crazy."
