Travel down the broad boulevards of New Delhi, laid out early in the 20th century after the British moved the capital of the Raj from Kolkata to New Delhi and created a new administrative city just south of the old city. Sir Edwin Lutyens, a noted British architect, was given the task of designing this new city, which is still known as Lutyens' Delhi; though the British are long gone, this area continues to house India’s government. The British were by no means the only conquerors to make New Delhi their capital. It was also the capital of the Mughal Empire for centuries, so it hosts spectacular examples of Mughal architecture, including Humayun’s Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Humayun’s Tomb, erected in 1570, was the first Mughal garden tomb in India (and a model for the Taj Mahal and Birla House). Your panoramic tour includes a look at the enormous fort where the emperors lived. The old phrase says that “Delhi belongs to the large-hearted,” and no one was larger hearted than Mahatma Gandhi, the founder of modern India, whose memorial, Raj Ghat, is also on the itinerary today.

You have some free time after your tour to explore this exciting city on your own—you’ll find goods from all over India in bustling Connaught Place, in case you want to indulge in some shopping, and the National Museum displays 5,000 years of India’s arts and artifacts. You may opt for the optional tour to Qutab Minar and the Jagannath Hindu Temple.

Masterpiece Collection Providing the most all-inclusive luxury to our guests is the heart and soul of our brand and that will never change. Yet sometimes our guests want something that goes even "above and beyond" our included experiences. In light of this, we now offer guests a curated selection of optional excursions, available for an additional charge.

Qutab minar and jagannath hindu temple.

Embark on half-day excursion to visit two of India's most popular monuments, Qutab Minar and the Jagannath Hindu Temple. The highest brick minaret in the world, Qutab Minar is part of the Qutab complex, an UNESCO World Heritage site shared by surrounding mosques, tombs and towers. The soaring Qutab Minar tower dates back to 13th century and is among the earliest examples of Islamic architecture in India. Look closely to see verses from the Quran delicately etched into its iconic red sandstone. Next, you'll visit Jagannath Hindu Temple, home to three deities including Lord Jagannath, considered to be the "Lord of the Universe." Although you can't go inside the temple, its incredibly intricate architecture and façade are sure to leave you in awe.

*Masterpiece Collection are optional experiences that go above and beyond our daily selection of included excursions and can be booked for an additional fee. Select Masterpiece Collection Optional Experiences can be pre-booked. Please note that requests to pre-book must be made by calling our Reservations Team no later than 6 days prior to departure and are subject to availability. Some venues are limited in the number of guests they can accommodate. Guests can book onboard (space permitting) and pay in USD. Pre-booked Masterpiece Collection Optional Experiences are refundable up to 5 days prior to the cruise/tour start date; if inside of 5 days they are non-refundable. Select Masterpiece Collection Optional Experiences require a minimum number of participants and are subject to cancellation (with full refund) if minimum is not met. Masterpiece Collection Optional Experiences are non-commissionable. Prices are subject to change. Masterpiece Collection excursions may not operate if they occur on a holiday or if they require a minimum number of participants and that minimum is not met.

New Delhi, Transfer to Agra

Agra

This morning you will check out of your New Delhi hotel and head south via motorcoach to Agra, the site of Shah Jahan’s best-known building project, the exquisite Taj Mahal. You’ll visit the Taj Mahal this afternoon and stay for sunset, as the monument’s changing colors draw comparisons to the shifting mood of the late Emperor’s wife.

Majesty and Grace—the Taj Mahal at Sundown

Arrive this afternoon at the luxurious Oberoi Amarvilas. Relax over lunch there and then check into your room, where you will be delighted to discover that your room—indeed, every room—has a view of the Taj Mahal, your next destination for the day.

It’s easily the most famous...

It’s easily the most famous building in India, and one of the most famous in the world, with its white domes and minarets floating serenely above the reflecting pools—and you will encounter it just as the setting sun bathes the white marble in a panoply of colors. It’s a monument to a love story between a great ruler, Shah Jahan, and a learned and powerful woman, his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. After she died giving birth to their 14th child, he gathered some 20,000 craftsmen to build her mausoleum, who endowed it with dazzling translucent marble carvings inlaid with precious and semiprecious stones. Step through the gate and into the symmetrical gardens, and experience one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Agra, Transfer to Jaipur

Jaipur

Is the Taj Mahal best seen at sunset or sunrise? It’s an impossible question to answer, so Uniworld guests have the rare pleasure of experiencing both. Wake up early this morning to see the white marble monument aglow with the rosy tinge of dawn. You’ll spend your next two nights at the beautiful Oberoi Rajvilas. The luxury hotel sits on 32 acres of landscaped gardens and is built around an ancient Shiva temple.

Early Morning at the Taj Mahal

Awake early in the morning for a return visit to the Taj Mahal, which will take on the rosy pink tints of sunrise as you arrive. The gates open as the sun lifts above the horizon, and you enter the exquisite precincts, which you may explore at your leisure.

You’ll return to your hotel for...

You’ll return to your hotel for lunch before you head by motorcoach to the third city in the Golden Triangle, Jaipur. Capital of the state of Rajasthan, strewn with massive palaces, it was founded and carefully planned in the 18th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II (who gave the new city his name), so even the old part of the city is laid out on a grid. The Singh family’s influence is still felt in Jaipur, though all hereditary titles in India were discontinued in 1971.

Check into the romantic Oberoi Rajvilas, a luxurious oasis, and spend the afternoon relaxing at the hotel, enjoying the extensive, bird-filled gardens.

Pink is the color of hospitality in Rajasthan, which gives you an idea of what to expect in the “Pink City” of Jaipur.

Jaipur—Rajasthan’s Princely City and Amber Fort

Today you'll tour the Amber Palace, followed by a visit to another of Jai Singh II’s architectural projects, the Jantar Mantar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site devoted to astronomy. Each of the curious structures, called yantras, in this observatory without telescopes enabled court astronomers to study the heavens, measuring various celestial phenomena—eclipses, the position of stars—or the time of day. Some of these instruments are still used by astrologers to determine which days will be auspicious for weddings or other important events.

Take the afternoon to explore on your own: Shuttles will be available to carry you to and from the hotel to the major shopping district. Jaipur’s bazaars are famous for their traditional Rajasthani crafts—jewelry, pottery, hand-printed textiles, and carpets—so go and enjoy the swirl of colors even if you aren’t interested in buying some souvenirs.

Jaipur, Fly to Kolkata (Embark), Cruising the Ganges River

Settle into your beautifully appointed suite aboard the Ganges Voyager II in Kolkata.

Kalna, once an important trade port on the river, is best known today for the magnificent Hindu temples built by the maharajas of Bardhaman— which you’ll experience today. After marveling at the astonishing Rajbari temple complex, you may opt to walk with your guide through the colorful local market.

India’s “Temple City”

Stroll along the streets of Kalna as you head to the Rajbari temple complex. Stroll along the streets of Kalna as you head to the Rajbari temple complex. The Pratapeshwar Temple, built in 1849, is embellished with exceptional terra-cotta carvings depicting myths and rituals, as well as scenes of everyday life (see if you can spot the girl in typical Victorian dress with a violin among the hundreds of figures). Lalji, the oldest temple in the complex, dates to 1739; the three-storied structure is topped with 25 distinctive pinnacles. Next to it is Krishna Chandra, built in a similar style. Across the street you’ll find the amazing Naba Kailash, two concentric circles of intricately carved temples dedicated to Shiva. The inner circle is made up of 34 white temples symbolizing pure thought; the outer circle contains 74 temples symbolizing the everyday world.

Your ship serves as a time machine today, transporting you hundreds of years into the past, as we travel to the authentic artisan village of Matiari.

Matiari Master Craftsmen with an Introduction to Brass

Artisans have been making ornamental brass objects— vases, lamps, figurines, platters—in Matiari for more than a century, so it’s no wonder that production is so well-organized and the craftsmen so skillful. Scrap metal is melted in the village foundry and pressed into new sheets of brass, which are then turned into various objects. Each craftsman specializes in a different step of the process, so one artisan might cut the metal, while another shapes it into a wide tray, and yet another etches an intricate pattern onto the surface. The sound of hammer on brass will fill the air as you stroll from workshop to workshop to see each step of the fascinating process.

Murshidabad, Baranagar

Today’s adventures take you to a duo of Bengali towns—Murshidabad and Baranagar—each one boasting surprising and beautiful architectural monuments closely linked to the ruling families of the area.

Visit to Murshidabad City, Ride by Buggy to Katra Mosque, and Visit to Baranagar Village

Climb aboard a horse-drawn buggy for a ride to Katra Mosque, built in 1723 by the first nawab, Murshid Quli Khan, who gave his name to the town. The huge mosque was damaged by an earthquake in 1897, losing two of its four great towers, but it is still a remarkable sight.

Your visit continues in...

Your visit continues in Murshidabad, long ago the capital of Bengal and an important administrative center during the Raj—a fact that comes clear as the ship rounds a bend in the river and you behold Hazarduari Palace. This massive neoclassical building was erected in the mid-19th century for British officials, who lived and had their offices in its 114 rooms. One might wonder why the architect, Colonel Duncan Macleod of the Bengal Corps, thought the building needed a thousand doors, but that’s how many it has—900 of them are real doors, and the remaining 100 are false. It is now a museum, which you will visit.

Return to the ship for lunch and cruise to the town of Baranagar, where Rani Bhabani built beautiful brick temples in the 18th century. Goats frolic among them now and vines attempt to take them over, but the terra-cotta carvings are considered among the best in Bengal and the temples are well-tended.

After your tour, if time and weather allow, you can learn a bit about one of the Raj’s enduring legacies in India: a passion for that most British of all games, cricket. It remains India’s favorite sport, and the national team, nicknamed the “Men in Blue,” has won the Cricket World Cup more than once. The game is played in schools, in fields, even on village streets; watch it in action and discover the meaning of terms like “long leg,” “fast bowler” and “run-out.”

The Ganges, Khusbagh, Mayapur

One of the world’s most sacred bodies of water, the Ganges River flows through a myriad of small villages and highly populated cities throughout India and Bangladesh. Take in the remarkable scenery as you sail and be on the lookout for a rare sighting of the endangered Ganges river dolphin.

Also today, watch as a skilled practitioner of mehndi demonstrates how the intricate henna patterns are created, and discover the meanings of the traditional motifs.

Khusbagh Walk

Khusbagh, which literally translates to “Garden of Happiness,” is the garden-graveyard of the Nawabs of Bengal. Several historic rulers of this region, including Siraj ud-Daulah and Alivardi Khan, were laid to rest here. Take a walk through the village here, with a visit to see the...

Several historic rulers of this region, including Siraj ud-Daulah and Alivardi Khan, were laid to rest here. Take a walk through the village here, with a visit to see the mausoleum and the arcade verandah that surrounds it.

Mayapur, Chandannagar

Mayapur

Few places of worship exist on such a head-spinning scale as what you will witness today in Mayapur, the center of the international Hare Krishna movement and home to the new Temple of the Vedic Planetarium, still under construction. Most students of history know a thing or two about the British colonial powers in India, but few are aware that the French had colonies here as well. You’ll visit this former French outpost today.

This evening, enjoy a Farewell dinner and take in a lively cultural dance performance, complete with music and dancing.

As the ship comes into sight of Mayapur, look for the new Vedic temple currently under construction. Funded in part by Alfred Ford, great-grandson of Henry Ford, the temple is designed to be larger than St. Paul’s Cathedral in London once completed. The new temple construction coincides with the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Hare Krishna movement, whose founder was born in Mayapur. Millions of Hare Krishna devotees come from all over the world to this pilgrimage site; as you walk through Mayapur’s bazaar to the temple complex, you may well spot expatriates from America, Canada, and Europe. Colorful parades of followers often weave through the streets, adding to the hustle and bustle of the lively, vivid scene. You’ll tour the existing temple complex, get a look at the new Vedic Planetarium, and learn something about the beliefs of the International Society of Krishna Consciousness.

“Liberté, Egalité et Fraternité.” These words, the famous slogan of the French Revolution, are inscribed on the gateposts of Chandannagar, a mark of the centuries the town was a French outpost in West Bengal. In fact, Chandannagar did not officially become part of India until 1952, so when you step ashore here you will find a mixture of French Colonial and Indian architecture. A broad, tree-lined riverfront promenade known as the Strand shows off the handsomest remaining French buildings, and a river winds its way through the town. Chandannagar actually earned its name from the crescent shape of the river, as the Hindi word “chand” translates to “moon.” Our visit to Chandannagar today includes a stop at the 19th-century Church of the Sacred Heart.

The city of Kolkata is synonymous with the enduring legacies of Mother Teresa and the colonial-era British Raj, both of which you will get better acquainted with today.

After lunch, you’ll venture to Kumartuli, a traditional potters’ neighborhood that specializes in making intricate clay idols, for a look at this complex and fascinating time-honored tradition. Next, on your way back to the ship, you'll see the many remnants of Kolkata's colonial past. Though teeming Kolkata is home to palaces and tenements, new developments and modern office buildings, grand hotels and parks, its historic architecture reflects its status as the longtime administrative heart of the British Raj. The colonial buildings still standing—and still in use—offer a blend of baroque and neoclassical styles that say much about British colonial taste. Perhaps the most surprising is the red-and-white façade of the Calcutta High Court building—a replica of the city hall in Ypres, Belgium. You’ll see it as well as the stately Palladian dome of Government House, the classical white columns of Town Hall, the red-brick Writers’ Building, and the enormous General Post Office. Visit St. John’s, the oldest Anglican church in the city, then stop for a photo op outside the Victoria Memorial Museum—which was partly inspired by the Taj Mahal. Built as a tribute to Queen Victoria after her death, this huge white-marble structure houses an illuminating exhibition on the colonial era.

She came to India in 1929, after growing up in Macedonia and joining a Loreto nunnery in Ireland, and two decades later she founded her own order, the Missionaries of Charity, devoted to the “salvation and sanctification of the poorest of the poor.” Visit the Mother House, where she lived and worked for decades; see her simply furnished room and the tiny museum devoted to her—her Nobel Peace Prize medal is on display, along with informative newspaper clippings and photos—and her tomb. It’s a modest and serene spot devoted to one of the most influential women ever to live in the city.

River Ganges – ABN Rajmahal

Sustainable tourism in India: What we love about our Ganges River Cruises, is the fact that local workers are hand-picked and taught skills in languages and hospitality, before progressing to become valued members of the friendly crew, drivers or local admin staff.  Projects funded by the company encourage learning and development and an awareness of environmental issues, all for the good of local communities.  Local businesses are used from initial ship build, to providing hand crafted furniture and fabrics which adorn the interiors of the vessels.  Guests have a unique opportunity to interact with community learning projects.

Vessels and Programmes: Enjoy touring on our India Ganges River Cruises at a wonderful, leisurely pace.  A unique opportunity to see Indian villages and sites off the usual tourist trail in fascinating and culturally rich parts of India – we’ll visit on foot, by cycle rickshaw or minibus. Onboard the highly acclaimed Ganges River cruise vessels ABN Rajmahal and ABN Sukapha, simply unpack and settle in for the journey.  The changing scenery is captivating, as are the Ganges dolphins and birds and other wildlife that you may see along the way. Carefully crafted excursion programmes highlight the wealth of places of interest, alongside visits to remote villages, where a nomadic lifestyle is still the norm and visitors are infrequent.   Enjoy relaxing on deck, with complimentary tea and coffee or enjoy the scenery from your own cabin with fully opening floor to ceiling windows and French balcony.  Cuisine on board is a mixture of Assamese (milder than most Indian cuisine) and continental. The chef will demonstrate some of his dishes during a cookery lesson.  Wines, beer and spirits are available at reasonable bar prices.

We offer a range of different cruises; the busy ‘ Historic Hooghly’ on the Lower Ganges, which visits more populated historic towns between Kolkata and Farakka (8 days cruise operates all year round) , ‘ Holy Ganges’ between Farakka and Patna (7 or 9 days) is a fascinating insight into rural India,  ‘City of Light’ (8 days), visits Varanasi, offering a once in a lifetime experience for many travellers and ‘Bengal Memories’ (4 days) from Kolkata to Kolkata, a great add-on to your India tour.  Whichever cruise you choose, you will be treated as a VIP guest by the welcoming crew and Cruise Manager of the RBN Rajmahal.

GANGES Cruises 2024 & 2025 now available:

Kolkata to kolkata bengal memories 4 days from only usd 690 p.p., kolkata to farakka historic hooghly 8 days from only usd 1,610 p.p., farakka to patna holy ganges cruise 7 or 9 days from only usd 2,160 p.p., patna to varanasi city of light cruise 8 days from only usd 2,520 p.p., abn rajmahal – single cabins with no single supplement all dates.

Pre and Post Cruise stay in India: Take time to stay on for a couple of nights in the City of Palaces, Calcutta (Kolkata) – the capital of British India for around 150 years, with much superb colonial architecture. It can also claim to be the intellectual capital of modern India, and is a thriving, bustling, colourful and up to date city, with some excellent shops. In the northern suburbs lie the old French, Dutch and Danish colonial enclaves, still retaining a distinctive flavour.  Please ask us for more information.

Group Travel: These small vessels are ideal for groups, ABN Sukapha accommodates maximum 24 guests and ABN Rajmahal maximum 40 guests. Please contact us with your requirements for more information.

BRAHMAPUTRA RIVER CRUISES

Worlds Best Cruise Line

India's Brahmaputra River is the 29th longest river in the world at 2,948 km long, and has a discharge of 19,200 cubic litres per second which puts northern India's great waterway in the top 10 when it comes to volume. This is a massive waterway, being the only river on Earth clearly visible from the moon during the Apollo missions. Flowing down from central Tibet through the legendary Tsangpo gorges, the Brahmaputra river opens out as it enters Assam to flow across that state and then through Bangladesh to flow out through the vast Sundarbans Delta, merging with the Ganges River , as they discharge into the Bay of Bengal.

The Brahmaputra river may be little-navigated today, but in colonial times steamer services operated as far as Dibrugarh. The river in places can be up to 20 miles wide and in the monsoon it floods the entire Assam plain. Indeed, East Bengal is not called “the wettest place on the planet" for nothing – it literally does have the world’s highest rainfall.

The river is so vast that any river cruise expedition undertaken here can be movingly wondrous, as you pass through this great emptiness of water, sand and shoal. Passengers of our Brahmaputra river cruises enjoy their trips in peace and tranquility with very little human activity on the riverbank. That means the wild life and bird life are profuse.

4 River Cruises in India That Will Wow You

The top itineraries for river cruises in India show off spectacular scenery, sacred sites, and one-horned rhinos.

By Heidi Sarna

March 26, 2024

Heidi Sarna is the co-founder of QuirkyCruise.com , a guide to small-ship cruising .

India is a spectacular destination, but it can also be a challenging and overwhelming place to travel.

A river cruise mitigates some of the tough parts so you can focus on the amazing stuff—ornate Hindu temples and Mughul-era mosques and citadels, colorful markets, and towns teeming with life. And after you experience all of that on excursions, your comfortable riverboat awaits with fragrant hand towels and a refreshing drink at the gangway.

I recently spent a fascinating week cruising on India’s Hooghly River aboard the 40-passenger Rajmahal , one of several riverboats operated by Assam Bengal Navigation (ABN). We toured sites along a 250-mile stretch of the river downstream to Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), setting out each morning and afternoon on excellent guided tours highlighting India’s rich heritage and culture, led by guides who sail along on the cruise with you.

Riverboats in India have sun decks for relaxing while watching the scenery float by, dining rooms that serve delicious regional fare—think curries and all manner of vegetables, with Western choices always available too—and air-conditioned en suite cabins. Rooms aboard ABN’s Rajmahal  are quite luxurious, with sliding glass doors for river views as well as mini fridges and a coffee/tea setup including a jar of tasty homemade cookies.

Before or after dinner, passengers can attend talks on the next day’s excursions as well as film screenings about the region and performances by folk dancers and singers.

Many travelers combine a weeklong cruise with a longer stay in the country to explore the cities of embarkation or fly to other intriguing destinations, such as the beaches of Goa or the historic cities of the Golden Triangle—Delhi, Jaipur, and the Taj Mahal's hometown of Agra.

Seeing India by Riverboat: Timing, Weather, Fitness Level

India’s winter months are the prime season for cruising the country's waterways; that's when temperatures hit the 60s and 70s by day and 40s and 50s at night and early mornings. (Broadly speaking, river cruising season lasts from September through April or May, but there are variations. The Ganges season tends to be shorter, for example, while the Kerala season lasts a bit longer.)

Daily temperature fluctuations at this time of year necessitate dressing in layers, so you can add on and peel off as needed.

A reasonable degree of fitness and resilience is required to negotiate the walking tours, skiff rides (to and from shore as boats often anchor midriver), and rides in auto rickshaws. Not to mention the heat and dust you may encounter.

The 4 Main Rivers and Waterways for Cruises in India

Brahmaputra river.

Cruises on one of India’s most revered rivers cover a 250-mile section across the northeastern state of Assam, known for its tea gardens and wildlife. I spent a week cruising the Brahmaputra aboard Far Horizon Tours' quirky 46-passenger Mahabaahu and loved it for two big reasons: the chance to see one-horned rhinos in the wild in Kaziranga National Park and to take in the vast sandy landscape.

With its source high in the Himalayas, the Brahmaputra gathers an enormous amount of sediment on its way down to the Bay of Bengal, so in places the river is braided with islands of sand.

Excursion highlights : Jeep safaris to see one-horned rhinos, Asian elephants, Asiatic water buffalo, and migratory birds; Hindu temples; walks (and yoga!) on the river's sandbars

Companies that cruise here : Far Horizon Tours ,  Assam Bengal Navigation , Pandaw ,  Antara Cruises

Hooghly River

Also known as the Lower Ganges, the Hooghly is a short, twisting distributary of the Ganges River that flows into the Bay of Bengal east of India. Hooghly cruises sail upstream or downstream between Kolkata and points north, around Farakka. Cruise fares usually include a one-way train ticket.

Excursion highlights : Gour, the medieval walled capital city of Bengal, with its centuries-old Indo-Islamic ruins; the beautiful Shiva temple in Kalna, designed in concentric circles; the turmeric-colored 19th-centry Kathgola Palace and gardens; village walks and visits to traditional makers of brass and textiles

Companies that cruise here : Assam Bengal Navigation , Pandaw , Antara Cruises

Ganges River

The most famous of India’s rivers, the Ganges starts high up in the Himalayas, wending its way down into the plains of India past venerated cities such as Varanasi  (pictured at the top of this page) before eventually reaching the Bay of Bengal.

Cruises on the Upper Ganges are offered at the end of the summer monsoon season, with itineraries featuring various combinations between Kolkata and Varanasi.

Excursion highlights : Visiting the holy ghats of Varanasi and Buddhist sites; exploring remote villages; touring Indo-Islamic 16th–18th-century mosques and temples

cruise river india

Kerala Backwaters

The long thin southwestern state of Kerala has hundreds of miles of tropical shoreline along the Arabian Sea. The region's coastal maze of canals, rivers, and lakes gives way, farther inland to tea, coffee, and spice plantations thriving in the hills.

Kerala’s waterways, often called its backwaters, are popular for 1- and 2-night houseboat cruises aboard traditional wood and thatched rice boats. I greatly enjoyed a week aboard the rustic 18-passenger Vaikundam , one of the few options for longer cruises.

Excursion highlights : Seeing a traditional Chinese fishing net; navigating narrow canals under a canopy of palms; taking village walks; bird-watching; dinner in a local home; traditional dance performances

The holy city of Varanasi, India

River cruises in India

By India specialist Sarah

While many of India’s roads are well-trodden, there are vast swathes of the country that remain almost untouched by tourism and some are only accessible by boat. The history, wildlife, and tribal culture in the northeast are unlike any other part of India, and here you’re more likely to meet a one-horned rhino than a hoard of tour buses.

Cruising along the Brahmaputra in Assam

One-horned rhino grazing in Kaziranga National Park

Nestled in-between Bangladesh, Bhutan and Myanmar , Assam is a long, narrow state, intersected by the mighty Brahmaputra river. This is bordered on either side by farmland and tea plantations stretching out as far as the eye can see until they reach the Himalayan foothills. On a clear day the views are simply beautiful, and the leisurely pace of a river cruise is an ideal way to appreciate fully such a languid landscape. Alongside its natural diversity, Assam is home to a fusion of different cultures and heritages — Chinese, Tibetan, Bangladeshi and Indian.

Kaziranga National Park’s one-horned rhino

Lazing on the boat's sun deck and watching life unfold on the riverbank could be all the sightseeing you need, but to do so would be to miss some of India's finest wildlife in Kaziranga National Park . Despite the park being home to the only one-horned rhino population in India, you may find that your group is one of only a handful. You may also see tigers, whose numbers are on the rise, and excellent birdlife. The boats always have a resident naturalist and back on board you can discuss the day's sightings with guides and fellow guests over a pre-dinner drink in the lounge.

Traditional life on Majuli Island

What Kaziranga offers in terms of wildlife, Majuli Island rivals in cultural interest. The largest river island in the world, Majuli is home to indigenous tribes and, while this means you can't stay on the island, a visit from the boat provides an opportunity to see the traditional way of life still lived in the villages and the mask-making for which they're known.

Experiencing the local way of life

Assam is also known for its textiles and during one cruise I recall disembarking the boat at a tiny village where most of the homes had hand looms outside, operated by women who were amazed that we had come all the way to Assam, let alone to their village, and their homes. The boats will try to stop at different villages on each cruise so the residents may not have welcomed any visitors for a few years and these ladies were quite shy to start, but soon opened up. Our guide translated for us, as we shared stories of our different lives.

The Charaidew cruises the Brahmaputra

A perfect cup of tea

No trip to Assam would be complete without a visit to the tea plantations that surround Dibrugarh. Here, the neat rows of tea bushes, some of them hundreds of years old, are punctuated only by the vibrant saris of the tea workers picking the 'two leaves and a bud' that you can then see made into leaf tea on a visit to a factory. A special way to end a trip through Assam is on the veranda of a plantation bungalow, cup of tea in hand, surrounded by a sea of green.

Cruising options in Assam

There is a variety of cruise options on the Brahmaputra as well as the possibility to combine itineraries for travel from three up to ten nights. You can cruise both up and downstream.

Best time to cruise in Assam

The best time to enjoy a river cruise in Assam  is from November to April, when Kaziranga National Park is open, the monsoon rains have gone, and the temperatures are moderate. It's best to avoid Christmas, when the temperatures plummet and the mists are heavy, potentially disrupting the cruise schedules.

Cruise boats on the Brahmaputra

We work with only a couple of boats. The smaller of the two is the Charaidew II , which has only 12 cabins so you can be sure that you will not be in a large group when on shore. The Mahabaahu is larger with more facilities such as a small spa and pool. As the crews are local, you'll find that they're eager to tell you all about their home state. The food also tends to be Assamese, milder than other Indian cuisines and bearing more similarities to the fragrant dishes of Southeast Asia.

Navigating the history of the Hugli in West Bengal

Nava Kailash temple complex in Kalna

So much of India's rural life depends on the river that settlements tend to congregate around the banks, including the historic, chaotic city of Calcutta . Cruising along the river you'll be able to experience the bustle of the ghats and city industries, as well as farmlands where ploughs are still pulled by ox and local temples honour village deities.

A seven night cruise along the Hugli from Calcutta uncovers the diverse history of India, from one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world to Dutch, French and British colonial settlements and the former capital of the East India Company.

One of the most popular cruises begins in Calcutta, where you spend a few days exploring this frenetic city and its colonial past, before cruising out into the countryside, leaving behind the crumbling warehouses and mansions that line the river for a more verdant landscape and relaxed pace.

The boat will stop off each day so you can explore small towns that chart the cultural and religious history of the area and your guide will bring to life the extraordinary history of West Bengal, weaving tales around the statues of former viceroys and the portraits of elegant ladies and gentlemen of the Raj.

As you cruise further from the main cities, the villages become smaller and more infrequent, and your boat will cause ever greater excitement in the children who run along the banks, attempting to practise their English on you from a distance.

Depart from Calcutta on the cruise boat Sukapha

Visiting Kalna

A few days into the cruise you reach Kalna, a personal favourite of mine as the temple complex here is unlike any other I've seen on my travels around India. The Nava Kailash, built in 1809, is made up of more than 108 Shiv Mandirs (small shrine temples home to deity statues). They are constructed in two circles: 74 in the outer, 34 creating the inner circle. Although too small and sacred to enter, the clever design means all deities can be seen and worshipped from the centre of the temple complex.

Cruising options in West Bengal

As in Assam, we work with only a small number of boats, and the dates of your travel will largely dictate the choice of boat. The Sukapha has only 12 cabins in comparison to the larger and newer 22 cabin Rajmahal . The cruises start at seven nights and can be easily combined to create a 14-day trip. The most popular cruise departs from Calcutta and travels up through the colonial settlements of Serampore, Chandernagore, Barrackpore and Kalna.

Best time to cruise in West Bengal

I would suggest travelling from October to April, when the temperatures are pleasant. Unlike Assam, this area is not usually affected by fog so it's possible to travel over the Christmas period.

Cruising the Ganges

Devotees on the banks of the river Ganges, Varanasi

Before the mighty river Ganges forks into Bangladesh and becomes the Hugli in West Bengal, it flows down through India from the Himalaya. For Hindus, the Ganges is incredibly sacred, especially in holy cities such as Varanasi , in Uttar Pradesh.

Cruising India's most spiritual river is a rewarding cultural experience and allows you to see many sites that aren't easily accessible by road. Mughal ruins of palaces and forts litter the area and cruise itineraries offer the opportunity to see Buddhist monasteries in Vikramshila, 6th century rock carvings in Bateshwar and silk markets in Bhagalpur. Some guests are even treated to the sight of Gangetic dolphins.

Experience an evening aarti in Varanasi

Arriving into Varanasi by river is just one of the highlights of a Ganges cruise. Leaving behind the sparsely populated countryside and sailing into one of the most populated parts of India is a very special introduction to one of the country’s most sacred cities. Take a small boat from the bathing ghats to experience the evening aarti from the river and you'll be immersed in the smell of the incense, the clang of bells and the lights of the numerous candles floating on the water.

Cruise the Ganges up or downstream on the Rajmahal

Cruising options on the Ganges

Cruises along the Ganges last between six and eight nights. The only boat we currently work with on the Ganges is the 22 cabin Rajmahal , which has air-conditioned cabins, spacious sun decks, sociable dining rooms and lounges as well as attentive and friendly service. The Rajmahal is specifically designed for the varying water levels of the Ganges. As with the cruises on the Brahmaputra and Hugli, you can travel either up or downstream.

Best time to visit Varanasi and cruise on the Ganges

Visiting Varanasi and cruising on the northern parts of the Ganges is only possible in August and September when the water levels are high. As this is toward the end of the monsoon, the weather may not be perfect but the lush beauty of the revived green landscape will more than compensate.

Exploring beyond the river

Exploring Assam and West Bengal by boat combines well with a number of other parts of North India . You could choose to fly into India's capital city, Delhi , and begin your travels with a trip around the Golden Triangle, taking in the Taj Mahal in Agra and the 'pink city' of Jaipur before flying onto Calcutta or Varanasi .

Or if mountains and tranquillity appeal more than the dusty plains, it's only a short flight from Calcutta up to the Himalaya to experience Darjeeling , and the mountain kingdom of Sikkim.

River Cruises in India

It is said India owes the existence of its thriving civilization, and even its name, to the river Indus. And not just her, India is blessed with many major rivers that flow through the length and breadth of the country, breathing life for miles and miles along their riverbanks. The largest of India’s rivers are the Ganga and Brahmaputra, flowing through some of the most fertile regions in the world. A huge part of north India flourished over centuries owing to the fertile plains formed due to the river deposits that today house some of India’s largest and oldest cities.

Taking a journey through these rivers is like experiencing the journey of the birth and re-birth of the Indian civilization. Lapping up on this unique opportunity, multiple home-grown cruiselines have introduced luxury river cruises on the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers where you can experience the ‘real’ India visiting offbeat villages and towns. Here are some of the key ports that you can look forward to visiting on a river cruise journey on these two mighty rivers:

On a Ganges River Cruise:

cruise river india

Chandernagore: Chandernagore – meaning ‘Moon Town’ got its name due to shape of bank of the Hoogly river that resembles a half moon. With an eclectic twist of the bygone era of a French Colony and its Bengali heritage, this quaint town offers a very distinct flavour of its own. The riverside promenade is lined with multiple beautiful colonial era structures, chief among them being the Sacred Heart Church. Other attractions include the Patal Bari (a half-submerged mansion in the river Hoogly, Rani Ghat, the Peachy Pavillion and the City of light district.

On a Brahmaputra River Cruise:

cruise river india

Majuli Island: One of the most mystical places on the itinerary on a Brahmaputra river cruise, Majuli is  a pollution free river island that is, quite literally, shaped by the Brahmaputra river. The river’s sand and silt deposits constantly reshape the local landscape of the island with its fast moving current. With its own unique history and culture, the island is known as the cultural capital of the state of Assam. At the heart of Assamese culture since the 15th century, Majuli is replete with a number of Satras (white monasteries) where the famous Matia Khora dance performed daily by the monks is a key attraction.

As with every sector relating to exploring Incredible India, there are a few key players who have been torchbearers in unearthing the thrill of river cruising within the country. While river cruising has been popular in Europe, Egypt and Vietnam, the Indian river cruising industry is still nascent but growing in popularity with discerning travellers as a unique vacation experience. Here are a few of the key luxury river cruise operations in the country with details of their itineraries:

Assam Bengal Navigation: The unquestioned pioneer of river cruising in India, this Indo-British venture is the largest of its kind with four cruise ships and a houseboat in its arsenal. ABN commenced cruising way back in 2003 on the Brahmaputra and in 2007 on the Ganges making this the oldest domestic cruise line in the country. They offer exclusive cruises designed specifically to explore Assam’s rich culture and history with all the comforts of luxury cruising.

Here is a summary of the cruise itineraries offered by these companies for the winter 2022-23 season.

*Note: Cabin prices cited are minimum prices for basic cabins and exclude port fees, taxes and are subject to change.

It is heartening to see that river cruising – which was once the exclusive domain of Europe, is now seeing a new chapter open here in our very home, touching parts of India’s culture and legacy by sailing on our mighty, unencumbered rivers. It truly is an experience unlike any other to watch the distant sight of an Indian city first from the ship and then see it grow and flourish the closer you get to the port. Embark on a unique vacation exploring India like never before, all from the comfort of your luxury cruise ship. And you never know, you might get to see the Royal Bengal Tiger in the Sundarbans while trying to take a selfie.

MV Vaikundam has nine well-appointed cabins with attached bathrooms on the lower deck and, a well-functional kitchen, air-conditioned and exquisitely set dining hall and open lounge on its upper deck.

Vaikundam is a modified version of the traditional Kettuvallom or rice barges of the past. The rooms are made using wooden panels, bamboo poles and bamboo mats, following the traditional practices but contain all modern amenities.

The wooden hull of the boat is made by joining planks of local wood ‘Aanjili,’ using strong coir rope on the segments above the waterline. The wood is coated with a caustic black resin made by boiling cashew kernel and fish oil. The wood is periodically treated with the Neem oil and Fish oil.

With two bedrooms and a Gold Star rating, the Sauver Nigam led the field in responsible tourism when it won “The Most Eco Friendly Tourism Project” way back in 1999, when responsible travel wasn’t even the buzz word it is today. Sauver Nigam thus established a benchmark for certifying all other boats plying the pristine backwaters, making it a truly remarkable houseboat on Kerala’s waterways.

Like the Vaikundam, the Sauver Nigam too is a mix of traditional and modern design. It assures your every comfort whilst not detracting from the authentic feel of a traditional “Kettuvallum” or rice barge. Built in the traditional style, not one nail has been used in the construction of the Sauver Nigam. Each plank of wood is joined to the next with strong coir rope then coated with caustic black resin obtained from boiled cashew kernels and fish oils.

Relax and lounge on Sauver Nigam’s upper deck where you have 360 degree views of the world as it drifts slowly by.

Downstairs, on the lower deck, is our dining area where the table will be laid for you every day to taste the unforgettable cuisine of the South, lovingly prepared by our chef.

"Big Nude Boat" offers a trip to "bare-adise" on a naked cruise from Florida

By Li Cohen

Updated on: May 2, 2024 / 8:20 AM EDT / CBS News

Like to travel light? One cruise ship soon to set sail from Florida is making sure all you need is the bare necessities – no shoes, no clothes but plenty of service.

" The Big Nude Boat " will take travelers from Miami to the Caribbean on "an 11-day adventure back to Bare-adise," the website says. Setting sail from Feb. 3 through Valentine's Day 2025, the trip offers a "stress-free, clothes-free experience" during which up to 2,300 passengers can roam the ship in the nude while out at sea.

"It's our pleasure to provide you with the luxury of deciding what NOT to wear," Bare Necessities Tour and Travel says.

@cbsmornings Would you dare to set sail on a nude cruise? 🚢 Cruisebare's upcoming full-ship nude cruise, departing from Miami in February next year, is making waves. Even #TonyDokoupil is down to go. 🌊 #cruises #vacation #experience #miami #sail ♬ original sound - CBS Mornings

Passengers won't be allowed to be naked when the ship is docked, but can ditch their usual attire once they are anchored or out on the water. And when clothing is optional, standard nudist etiquette must be abided by, the website says. When sitting, nude passengers must either wear a thong or sit on a towel or some kind of fabric. And while the self-serve buffet on the pool deck is a clothes-free area, passengers must be dressed for all dining room meals – and no, bathrobes don't count.

Photos and videos will also not be permitted unless all individuals being documented give consent.

"The Big Nude Boat" is just one of the cruises offered by Bare Necessities, which says on its website that the company has been "working to break down the barriers against social nudity and make clothing-optional vacationing a viable and acceptable option for all."

"Social nudity is not a sexual activity, and we strive to dispel the misconception that it is anything but natural and beautiful," the company says. "We have made strides in the acceptance of nude vacationing and our wide range of cruise charters are a testament to our success."

Danube river cruises: an ultimate guide to cruising Budapest and beyond

Why, when and how to sail along Europe’s second-longest river, which meanders through the likes of Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest

Its banks are lined with dramatic, unspoiled landscapes, postcard-perfect towns and villages, and grand, opulent cities . Take a river cruise down this majestic river and you’ll encounter some of the world’s most stunning countryside, including the UNESCO-protected Wachau Valley, along with an array of fascinating cultures.

Cruising Europe’s waterways is a great way to see more of the region in a short period of time than you might do by land, and a river cruise can be the ideal introduction to cruise holidays for first-timers.

While ships are smaller than those traversing across oceans, river cruise itineraries often feature big-name guests onboard – as is the case with our seven-night sailing along the Danube , when one of the UK's best-loved historians, Lucy Worsley (pictured below), joins guests on a private visit to Vienna’s Royal Lipizzaner Stables and Spanish Riding School.

What is the best time of year to cruise the Danube River?

The Danube is a year-round destination with the exception of January and February, when few cruise lines operate here. Summer, when the weather is hottest, is peak season and as a result Europe’s cities are particularly crowded. Because of that, we recommend taking a Danube river cruise in April, May, September and October. Good Housekeeping's seven-night itinerary sails in September, when the weather should still be balmy and dry, but the summer hordes have gone home.

Where does a Danube river cruise start and end?

The Danube either flows through or delineates part of the border of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. Many cruises traverse the stretch between the capital cities of Vienna, Austria and Budapest , Hungary, starting or ending at either location.

Our seven-night Danube river cruise with Lucy Worsley departs from the city of Engelhartszell in Austria before calling at Vienna (pictured below), the pretty town of Esztergom in Hungary and Budapest. You'll then loop back down the river, calling at Slovakia's capital Bratislava and the Wachau Valley in Austria before returning to Engelhartszell.

Is a Danube river cruise worth it?

Absolutely! If you love dazzling landscapes, magnificent architecture and fabulous food, a Danube river cruise is hard to beat. Exploring Europe by water requires no internal flights and train rides and eliminates schlepping around with your luggage in tow.

On a river cruise, you can discover multiple destinations – and even get to the heart of them with a guided tour, should you wish – in just one trip, all the while returning to the same luxurious stateroom and comfy bed each night.

What are the best things to do on a Danube river cruise?

One of the highlights of any Danube cruise is the Austrian capital, Vienna, with its musical heritage, imperial palaces, array of art museums, stunning Lipizzaner stallions, and delectable cuisine (a slice of Sachertorte chocolate cake is a must when in town!).

Secondly, Budapest, the capital of Hungary, boasts breath-taking architecture as well as historic thermal baths (pictured above), while Bratislava shouldn’t be overlooked with its lively 18th-century Old Town and impressive reconstructed hilltop castle from which you can look down over it.

Other hotspots along the Danube include the verdant Wachau Valley in Austria, which tumbles down to the riverbanks; and medieval Esztergom, Hungary’s former capital, which is home to the country’s largest church, Esztergom Basilica.

And that’s all without mentioning the entertainment and facilities onboard your ship. Join us on our seven-night Danube cruise and you’ll sail aboard A-ROSA FLORA, which boasts an onboard spa offering beauty and body treatments, gym, spacious sun deck, heated outdoor pool, outdoor restaurant with canopy top, bar and dancefloor, lounges and plenty of evening fun.

the largest medicinal bath in europe, the szechenyi thermal bath dates from the late 19th century

Which cruise lines offer Danube river cruises?

Among the companies offering cruises along the Danube are A-ROSA Cruises , with whom we have partnered to bring you our remarkable river cruise . A-ROSA has 20-plus years of experience in sailing couples, families, groups and solo travellers along some of Europe’s loveliest rivers in laidback style, giving you lots of freedom to explore port stops at your own pace.

How much does it cost to cruise the Danube?

Danube cruises can be great value, with our cruise through Austria, Hungary and Slovakia starting just over £2,000 per person for a week. All meals and drinks, including sparkling wines and cocktails, are included, as are snacks and afternoon tea. Also included is the use of the sauna, gym and top-deck heated swimming pool. You'll also get 15% off treatments in the onboard spa.

Sail the Danube and visit Vienna's famous riding school with Lucy Worsley in September 2024.

An ultra-luxury cruise line wants to attract wealthy Americans with its all-inclusive 'yachts' — see what the new 128-guest ship will be like

Castro said cabins for its upcoming winter itineraries in the Caribbean are "off to a very healthy start" and are being booked earlier than usual. Its upcoming Kaia is shown in a render.Scenic Group

  • Ultra-luxury cruise line Emerald Cruises says its third ocean ship will debut in 2026.
  • The all-inclusive vessel, which Emerald calls a "yacht," would accommodate up to 128 people.

Over the last few years, the mass-market cruise industry's larger-than-life mega-ships — outfitted with loud waterparks and more dining options than you could eat in a week — have dominated the spotlight.

But in the ultra-luxury cruise market, it's been the opposite. The smaller and more exclusive the vessel, the better. So much so that Emerald Cruises' next ocean-based ship, launching in 2026, plans to accommodate no more than 128 travelers.

It's a far cry from Royal Caribbean's new 7,600-guest cruise liner . And the price difference is just as steep: almost $250 per night on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas versus more than $720 per night on the upcoming ultra-luxury Emerald Kaia.

"When people think of cruising now, they automatically think of these large ships ," Robert Castro, the vice president of marketing for Scenic Group, Emerald's parent company, told Business Insider. "There's a market for that, but we're in a unique position."

If you’re familiar with river cruises, Emerald might ring a bell.

If you’re familiar with river cruises, Emerald might ring a bell.

The cruise line, owned by Scenic Group, only offered river cruises for its first nine years.

But lately, its biggest growth and investments have been in oceans, not rivers.

In 2022 and 2023, the Switzerland-based company launched its first two ocean cruise ships, which it calls "yachts." Each accommodates a maximum of 100 guests . And so far, they've been hits, with the cruise line experiencing record-high bookings in 2023.

But because Emerald's vessels operate group itineraries, they still technically count as cruise ships, albeit really nice ones.

So instead of paying hundreds of thousands of dollars a week to charter a yacht, as is traditional with these high-end vessels , travelers can spend less than $800 a day for a traditional cruise on said yacht-like ship.

While it's not nearly as exclusive, it sure is a hell of a lot cheaper, "bringing the charter yacht experience to reach for people who would never even imagine," Castro said.

The 64-cabin Emerald Kaia would have a larger guest capacity than its two predecessors but would still be tiny compared to most cruise ships, including some of the most luxurious ones.

Regent Seven Seas' new Grandeur can accommodate 746 guests, while Ritz-Carlton says its next ship will sail up to 448 travelers.

Even Four Season's upcoming vessel — with fares up to $350,000 a week — would have a larger guest capacity of up to 222 people. However, it would be almost 290 feet longer than Emerald Kaia.

Like traditional cruise ships, Kaia would have amenities like a spa, two lounges, and three dining options.

The top deck would also have a cabana and bar-lined pool, one of three swimming holes on the ship.

But unlike its mass-market competitors, Kaia would have an open-air marina that would give travelers direct access to the water.

Water platforms are typically only common on yacht-marketed ships, such as Emerald's, Ritz-Carlton's, and, someday, Four Seasons'.

This means guests on the upcoming Kaia could dip in the Mediterranean, Adriatic, and Aegean seas — as is included in its 2026 and 2027 itineraries — without disembarking the ship.

According to the cruise line, Emerald Kaia's future itineraries include an 11-day sailing from Cyprus to Greece and a 20-day one from Seychelles to Kenya.

Its cheapest itinerary is currently an eight-day roundtrip Seychelles vacation in 2027, starting at $5,055 per person.

As an all-inclusive cruise line, amenities like alcohol, WiFi, and excursions would be included in the base fare. However, unlike all-inclusive competitor Regent Seven Seas , guests must pay for their flights to and from the ship.

To compare, itineraries of the same length on Regent's Seven Seas Grandeur and Ritz-Carlton's Ilma would be $36 cheaper and $120 more expensive, respectively, per day.

But the fares aren't stopping travelers from gravitating toward Emerald. Before it unveiled Kaia, its parent company announced a record number of bookings in January — up 67% compared to its previous record in January 2020.

Castro said about 20% to 35% of its guests are American, typically well-acquainted with luxury travel.

The company's goal has been to increase its number of American customers. So far, it's working and is now "on track to be Emerald's No. 1 market," Castro told BI.

The new vessel is being built at a great time for the cruise line.

Strong demand, compounded by a small fleet of small ships, has led to fewer available cabins for its upcoming summer Mediterranean cruises.

Several of these sailings are now fully reserved. The cheapest remaining fares start at $4,570 per person for an eight-day November sailing from Athens, Greece, to Dubrovnik, Croatia.

It's great news for Emerald as it considers a future with more ocean "yachts." "The sooner we fill the ships, the sooner we start building new ones," Castro said.

After 20 Ocean Cruises, I Took My First River Cruise—Here Are 6 Ways It Was Better

I n 1995, when I was a freshman in college, my parents first introduced me to cruising. I absolutely loved waking up each morning on a new Caribbean island, and I thoroughly enjoyed the nonstop array of activities to keep me busy on our floating hotel. In my 30s, once I had a little disposable income, I was reintroduced to the world of cruise ships , and I fell in love with them all over again. Today, in my mid-40s, I write about cruising for a living and still completely adore itin fact, I recently completed my 20th ocean cruise.

But this year, I wanted to branch out. I had my sights set on scenic river cruising . It seemed so exclusive, so refined, so intimate, and everyone raves about their experiences. I had to know what I was missing. So my fianc and I booked a sailing for March 2024 called “Paris and the Heart of Normandy” on the Viking Radgrid , a round-trip river cruise from Paris that follows the iconic Seine river through Normandy villages, with stops that included Giverny (and the charming house and gardens where Claude Monet lived) and the legendary D-Day beaches along the Normandy coast.

The impetus for this particular itinerary? This year marks the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings during World War II, and I have a personal connection to itmy maternal grandfather was a Purple Heartawarded army medic in the 101st Airborne, who was wounded while attending to injured soldiers during the Normandy invasion.

As an avid ocean cruiser , I was excited about the opportunity to see this historic area through a river cruise. And despite my research ahead of time, I was still a bit surprised by some of the key differences between cruising the high seas vs. the river Seine. Most of them were actually preferable to ocean cruisingbut one wasn’t. Ahead, I’ve included everything you need to know about river cruises and the biggest differences you’ll find compared to ocean liners.

What’s the difference between a river cruise and an ocean cruise?

Unlike ocean cruise ships, which travel the open seas, river cruises travel along inland waters. River cruises are typically much smaller, as the vessels need to navigate smaller waterways and ports, which means fewer cabins and passengers as well. Ocean cruises often carry thousands of passengers (compared to hundreds of passengers on river cruises), and because there can be days at sea, the amenities (gyms, water parks, casinos, dozens of restaurants, live entertainment, kids clubs, etc.) tend to be extravagant. The river cruise is often a means of travel, while the destinations are the stars of the show.

The pros of a river cruise

There are quite a few pros in my book! These are the ways I believe river cruises stand out, compared to ocean liners.

All-inclusive experiences

One of my biggest gripes about cruising is that I often feel nickled and dimed to death. Even with the best all-inclusive ocean cruises , the final bill at the end of the sailing is always higher than you think it’s going to bethe drinks, specialty restaurants, excursions and Wi-Fi access can really add up. With Viking, almost everything was included in my upfront river-cruise feeit was actually all-inclusive.

Every guest receives free Wi-Fi, which was a huge relief, since I was also working while I cruised. The connection was limited to two devices at any given time, but we didn’t find this to be an issue. However, the Wi-Fi connection was a bit spotty at times, especially when we went through the locks.

Beer, wine and soft drinks were included during lunch and dinner. Liquor and higher-end wines cost extra, but there was a package you could purchase to help defray costs (called the Silver Spirits Beverage Package, which was $350 per cabin for a seven-day sailing trip). Other items included specialty coffees (the hot chocolate was to die for), teas and bottled water; port taxes and fees; and ground transfers with a Viking Air purchase. And all of these upfront savings really made a difference on the back-end of my trip. Honestly, while Viking will never be considered one of the cheapest cruise lines , once you factor in the extras they include on the front end (ones you’d have to buy separately with other cruise lines), your total vacation costs may be more similar than you’d think.

Included excursions

Each sailing included one complimentary shore excursion in every port of call, and they were fabulous. Viking really goes out of its way to find the best local guides and takes you to both off-the-beaten-path sights and well-known landmarks. For instance, included in the package was a fantastic walking tour of Rouen and its impressive Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Rouen, a walking tour of Chateau Gaillard in Les Andelys and a tour of Napoleon’s Chateau de Malmaison just west of Paris. The all-inclusive cruise also included a full-day tour of the D-Day landing beaches in Normandy (including Omaha Beach, a four-mile stretch where two-thirds of the seaborne troops from the U.S. landed on D-Day), as well as visits to both the Caen Memorial Museum and Normandy American Cemetery, where Viking held a touching memorial service for all passengers.

I ended up paying extra for two non-included tours I couldn’t pass up (the Palace of Versailles and the Louvre Museum) and felt those prices were aligned with any other cruise line.

Ideal docking

The Viking longships were purpose-built to navigate the Seine river, which means they can dock at exclusive locations that are super convenient to the sights you want to see. For instance, this cruise began in Paris, and we were docked a mere 20-minute walk from the Eiffel Tower. In fact, that’s the first thing I did after boarding the Radgrid , which allowed me to check off my biggest bucket-list item immediately!

Compared to docking at massive ports in the Caribbean, docking along the Seine was intimatein towns along the way, we did so right in front of impressive castles, chateaus and cathedrals. Sometimes, we’d just hop off the boat and walk into town on our own, thankful that we didn’t need to coordinate public transportation or walk for miles. This also came in handy if we wanted to enjoy a meal in town or do some shopping on our own time.

Compare that to many ocean cruises, where you’re often docked an hour or two away from a major cityas is the case with Rome and Bangkok, for example. That makes your already short time in port even tighter and can negatively impact your ability to see and do as much as you’d like.

Fewer passengers (and more intimate settings)

With only 168 guests in total, you will quickly become acquainted with them allthere are very few public spaces to hang out, and you’ll see guests time and again in the restaurant and on your tours. If you consider yourself less social or are a couple looking for romantic cruise dinners, you might find this off-putting, as you’ll rarely have the opportunity to dine alonein fact, all tables have eight or more seats (and you often find yourself repeating your life story to new passengers at every meal).

But we found it to be rather fun, getting to know a variety of people from around the world, each with interesting travel stories to share. Remembering all their names was the hardest part!

Bustling views

Because you’re on a river, there’s always a great view from the sun deck or your balcony. Most of the cabins have a balcony, except for the 22 standard staterooms, which have a half-height picture window. Compare that to staring off into endless miles of (beautiful) open ocean on an ocean cruise. While I do love the feeling of being “out to sea” and feeling small while bobbing on a seemingly never-ending body of water, there’s a lot more action on a river.

At times, we were passing through large, bustling cities along the Seine, and other times, meandering marsh-like areas. We moved under countless bridges, past woods and fields, and through the Norman countryside. The views kept changing hourly, and I felt like I was part of the scene. Several times, we passed so close to other boats that I could have literally stretched my arm out and touched them.

Smooth sailing

Most people are surprised to learn that I’m prone to seasickness, especially since I choose to take multiple cruises a year. While I clearly never let it deter me, I was incredibly pleased to note that there’s no jarring movement on a riverboat whatsoever. In fact, there were multiple times I didn’t even realize we had left the dock and were moving! It’ll be a huge relief not to have to add my seasickness wristband, Dramamine or prescription patch to my cruise packing list next time.

The con of a river cruise

Compared to an ocean cruise, there were, of course, some things I knew I wouldn’t find on board, including a casino, gym, spa, laundry room, swimming pool, waterslides, theater productions, photographers taking cheesy pictures of me, and children (all passengers must be 18 and over), and that was fine by me. In fact, I greatly appreciated the simplicity of the ship. It isn’t a destination or filled with amusement parklike amenities; it’s a means of transportation, and it serves its purpose well. But there was one thing in particular that I missed: food variety.

Lack of food options

One thing that got bit stale to me halfway through the cruise was not having any choice of restaurants or barsthere is only one of each on board. You’ll eat your breakfast, lunch and dinner in “The Restaurant” and get your drinks in “The Lounge & Bar.” You could choose to sit in the Aquavit Terrace, an indoor-outdoor area at the front of the ship perfect for al fresco dining when the weather cooperates, but our weather was pretty cold and wet during my late-March sailing, so we didn’t get to make much use of it. (I’m guessing this is fantastic in the summer!) And it’s the same menu as the Restaurant, so you’re only getting a different view, not different food.

I’m a total foodie, and I really crave a variety of cuisines and menus. I love the myriad choices you have on ocean ships, from culinary-focused cruises to the over-the-top 40 restaurant and bar venues on a mega ship like my cruise on the Icon of the Seas . Plus, I love hanging out in bars with different vibes depending on my mood.

While Viking did a nice job of providing well-rounded menus, incorporating some local French dishes and delivering tasty food, I yearned for a change of scenery and flavor profile. I look forward to my next Viking cruise, but I’d make more of an effort to eat off the ship whenever possible to help break up the monotony of mealtimes.

It’s all about the journey

I finally understand the magic of river cruising. It’s a wonderfully peaceful way to travel, you learn your way around the small ship in an hour (vs. several days on the big ships), you’re encouraged to interact with other guests, you get access to more intimate experiences and lesser-visited places, and there’s no surprise bill at the end, thanks to the all-inclusive model. I’ll still enjoy ocean cruises regularly, but I also look forward to exploring the Rhine, Danube and maybe even the Yangtze in the future.
