Bioluminescent kayaking in florida: nature’s wondrous light show.

By Lauren Tjaden

Imagine a paddling journey through an enchanted land of shimmering blue-green water where dolphins, rays and manatees are mysteriously illuminated under Florida’s vast, starry sky.

While bioluminescence feels like a bit of magic, it’s not. But it is Mother Nature at her spectacular best.

Bioluminescence is simply light created by living organisms-- like fireflies, comb jellies, or in this case, too-tiny-to-see plankton called marine dinoflagellate --manufactured by chemical reactions inside the organism.

In the right places at the right times in Florida, the unassuming dinoflagellate are as thick as 200,000 to 300,000 in a single liter of water, making the water glow the color of a fluorescent blue-green glow stick. Any movement excites the organisms and causes them to shimmer, from a swimming fish to swaying sea grass to the movement of your hand through the water.

That’s where the magic comes in. When an enormous manatee glides by, lit up like a Christmas tree; or a school of fish looks like bright blue bottle rockets going off under the water; or you go for a swim and turn into a fairytale creature, you’ll understand what I mean.

Here's what you need to know to experience this epic Florida adventure.,,

Preparing for a Neon Florida Night

Sultry Florida nights that are ideal for bioluminescence are also a favorite with bugs, so wear lightweight long pants and a long-sleeved shirt for protection, and remember to bring insect repellent. You may get a little wet, so quick-drying clothes are a must, as are water shoes.

Timing is Everything

For a blockbuster bioluminescent experience, you need to go at the best time of year and on a night when conditions are right. The seasons listed below here apply to Central Florida, as that’s where you’ll find the most and brightest bioluminescence. Note that as you go further north or south that the seasons may differ. Even in Central Florida, always check with a guide or with local kayakers for current conditions, as they can vary.

Depending on how warm the weather is, you may start to see glowing plankton as soon as March, but they’ll be much dimmer at that time of year, perhaps just a sparkle in the water. May through November is dinoflagellates season, with its peak from June through October and July and August being the prime months.

A second bioluminescent event occurs in Florida during the colder months, from November through May, when Comb Jellies flaunt their vivid colors. These brilliant, oval-shaped animals use their rows of minuscule, comb-like plates to propel themselves through the water, creating a shimmering rainbow effect. They produce a dazzling, flashing blue-green light when they’re touched, and they always create unique colors, so each time you see them, it’s different.

Despite their name, these prehistoric sea creatures aren’t real jellyfish and they don’t sting.

For either kind of bioluminescence, the darker the night the better, so check the moon calendar before you book.  During peak season, from July to August, the dinoflagellates are so bright that almost any night is fabulous.

A Word to the Wise

While you can access some areas without a guide, it’s smart to go with one – at least for the first time – even if you’re an experienced paddler. They’ll know the water conditions, the launches, and the best places to see bioluminescence.

Facebook groups for paddlers in each of Florida’s regions can provide a wealth of knowledge about local conditions and hotspots, and they’re usually more than happy to help with questions. Here are three groups:

North Florida Kayakers

Kayak Junkies of Central Florida

South Florida Paddlers

A happy paddler is a paddler who plans ahead. Make reservations early, particularly during the prime viewing months.

Where To See Bioluminescence in Florida

Out-of-the-world escapades on florida’s space coast.

The majority of Florida’s bioluminescent paddling takes place on the northern reaches of the Space Coast , famed for being home to Kennedy Space Center and its legendary missions to the great beyond. Situated against the Atlantic near the state's midsection, the area includes destinations like Cocoa Beach , Titusville , and Port and Cape Canaveral . It promises the longest stretch of beaches in the Sunshine State, a whopping 72 miles of them. A haven for nature and outdoor lovers, the Space Coast’s lack of development means less water and light pollution, making it easier to see bioluminescence.

Prime areas to see Space Coast bioluminescence include Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge ,  comprised of some 140,000 acres of saltwater estuaries and hardwood hammocks that provide habitat for 15 federally threatened or endangered species as well as a spectacular array of birds. Another beloved area is The Indian River Lagoon , made up of three waterways: the Banana River, the Indian River and the aptly-named Mosquito Lagoon . Hugged between the barrier islands of Florida’s eastern coast and the mainland, it holds bragging rights as the most biologically diverse estuary in North America. Designated an Outstanding Florida Water and an Estuary of National Significance, it’s brimming with mangrove wetlands and salt marshes sheltered from city lights.

Not to be outdone, north-central Brevard County’s Banana River Aquatic Preserve , bordered between Merritt Island on the west and the beach barrier island on the east, features a surface water area of roughly 30,000 acres. If you want to see manatees, this is the place to go.

There are a multitude of ways to experience these areas, so you’re sure to find the tour that’s just right for you—whether you’re looking for the most spectacular lights, an easy paddle, or something once-in-a-lifetime, like a swim in the bioluminescence.

For instance, BK Adventure offers a slew highly-acclaimed of bioluminescence tours into the area’s serene waters, including a tandem expedition, perfect for families, couples and friends; a tour in clear, glass-like kayaks, an experience so mind-blowing that it’s often described as ‘mystical’; and a sunset-bioluminescent combination paddle, where you’ll see nature light up in two radiant, different spectacles. It also delivers a raft trip for groups of six to eight people, or folks with kids; as well as an island tour , an easy paddle that gives you the chance to swim in the bioluminescence.

Here’s a list of area tour operators:

  • Florida Adventurer
  • Fin Expeditions
  • Viking EcoTours
  • BK Adventures
  • A Day Away Kayak Adventures
  • Cocoa Kayaking
  • Calypso Kayaking
  • Adventure Kayak of Cocoa Beach
  • Wildlife Watersports
  • A1A Beach Rentals and Outdoor Center
  • Banana River Boat Tours
  • Geo Trippin' Adventure Co.

Here’s a list of Space Coast kayak and canoe launches from Space Coast Paddling.

Swing into an Above-Par Adventure in Ponte Vedra Beach

North of St. Augustine in Ponte Vedra Beach , a destination synonymous with golf, you’ll find North Guana Outpost on Mickler Road. It boasts direct access to the Guana River and is only a short stroll to the beach at Mickler’s Landing, about two miles from the Intracoastal Waterway. It offers bioluminescent tours—rated as excellent --as well as stand up paddleboard and kayak rentals and sales , guided eco tours , SUP Yoga, fishing charters by kayak and paddleboard, and full moon paddles. Follow the links to find area kayak launch sites as well as information about prices, tours and hours.

Brilliant Bioluminescence in Tampa Bay

Wandering Adventures Kayak Company, operated out of St. Petersburg , offers bioluminescent tours into Safety Harbor from late June through late August three to five nights a week. It’s very bright, some nights just as bright as the space coast. Upper Tampa Bay Paddle Sports can help you discover Coopers Bayou Park, south of Safety Harbor, another Tampa Bay location where paddlers report glorious bioluminescence.

Luminous Nights in Naples

The Naples Kayak Company offers the only bioluminescent paddling tour in southwest Florida, and it’s a doozy. Their Guided Kayak Sunset Bird Watching-Bioluminescence Tour starts with an intriguing journey into Rookery Bay, where approximately an hour before sunset birds from all over the area fly in from every direction to a particular island where they like to spend the night.  Once the sun plunges down past the horizon and the sky darkens, the bioluminescent show begins. The trip is hallmarked by spectacularly beautiful, meandering mangrove trails and frequent appearances by dolphins.

And There’s More!

Bioluminescence occurs on coastlines in every corner of Florida, from the lagoons of Destin in the Northwest part of the state, to the flats of the Florida Keys on Florida’s southernmost tip—but often, it’s not widely advertised or consistent enough to find tours or hotspots that you can explore yourself.

If you’re interested in a trip, check with kayak rental and tours in the area in which you’ll be visiting to see if anything is available.

3 Best Places For Bioluminescent Kayaking in Florida

August 21, 2023 //  by  Florida Trippers

If you’ve never gone bioluminescent kayaking in Florida , then you missing out!

Bioluminescence is one of the coolest natural phenomena in the world. Witnessing it is like seeing magic happening in the water.

Bioluminescent bay kayaking is a must for any bucket list!

So what is bioluminescence? Where does it happen? Can you see it in Florida?

Well have no fear, we’re here to explain and guide you to where you can go bioluminescent kayaking in Florida!

Our Pick: Best Bioluminescence Kayaking Tour In Florida

A wave of blue bioluminescent water on a beach in Florida.

What Is Bioluminescence In Florida And Why Is It Blue?

In short, bioluminescence is light produced by a living organism. If you’ve ever seen a firefly, you have seen bioluminescence!

The light is produced by energy released by chemical reactions inside the organism.

In the rivers and oceans of Florida, bioluminescence is not as rare as you might think! Actually, many kinds of animals, from the smallest of bacteria to the mightiest of sharks have some species that are bioluminescent!

We don’t know all of the functions of bioluminescence in all animals. While some deadly fish like anglerfish use it to lure their prey, most species found in Florida will only use bioluminescence as a form of communication. Mainly to warn or evade predators.

So why does the light in the water appear blue? If you paid attention in science class, light has different wavelengths. Thanks to its intermediate wavelength, blue light travels the fastest.

While animals do emit other colored lights, those with longer wavelengths (like red) and shorter wavelengths (like purple) are absorbed into the water and filtered out to the human eye. This is also why the ocean appears blue every day!

When Is The Best Time To See Bioluminescence In Florida?

Bioluminescent organisms love warm weather. You’re going to want to go bioluminescent kayaking in Florida in the warmer summer months, after the sun has gone down of course!

Generally, the Florida bioluminescence season is from the middle of May through the summer until early October.

It is thought by scientists that you will see the most activity five days after the full moon of the month.

It is important to note that visibility is never guaranteed. That being said, your best chance of seeing the magic lights is two hours after the sun has gone down.

You’re going to want dark conditions, because the lights may be faint.

Plankton sparkle in the water, creating bioluminescence.

What To Pack When You Go Bioluminescent Kayaking In Florida

Because Florida has been lovingly referred to as a “lawless swamp” by its adoring natives, you need to be prepared. You are going to want to protect yourself from the elements, especially the bugs.

When choosing your apparel, it’s best to wear water or river shoes. You’re going to have to have to take your kayak out and you don’t want that river gunk or sand between your toes all night!

Fabrics that dry quickly are a must. You are going to be a little bit wet, and there’s nothing worse than feeling uncomfortable on a particularly swampy Florida night.

Do not wear bikini-style bathing suits or just trunks. In fact, long sleeves are highly recommended.

Besides long sleeves, you’re going to need more protection against insects. Bug repellant is a must and absolutely essential whenever you go out into bodies of fresh water in Florida. You need to protect yourself against those pesky mosquitos.

Because you’re kayaking at night, you definitely want to wear life vests and bring glow sticks, especially if you’re not going alone. If you’re not on a tour, it’s easy to get separated from your group, so some glow sticks should keep you lit just enough to still see the bioluminescence!

Consider packing a dry change of clothes and a towel to leave in the car. If you get more wet than you anticipated, you’ll want to be dry for your drive home at night.

The blue lights from plankton sparkle in the water.

Best Places For Bioluminescent Kayaking in Florida

While bioluminescence in Florida is rare, it does exist. You can mainly find the plankton and their magical lights on Florida’s Space Coast. If you’re not directly located near the East Coast or Central Florida, you will be in for a drive.

That being said, here are the best places to go bioluminescent kayaking in Florida.

Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge

On one of the prettiest islands in Florida  lies a 140,000-acre National Wildlife Refuge.

The land, originally acquired by NASA to build the John F. Kennedy Space Center, was designated a national reserve to protect these marshes, lagoons, and wetlands.

The best place to see bioluminescence in Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge is Haulover Canal. Found right in the middle of the refuge, here you’ll have the best chance because the canal is hundreds of thousands of acres of nothingness. It will be pitch black with no light pollution!

Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge is also a terrific place to see native Florida animals , like manatees and alligators .

If you want, you can spend the day seeing the animals and then come back at night to go blue water kayaking in Florida.

Indian River Lagoon

A group of three lagoons, the Indian River Lagoon is made up of the Mosquito Lagoon, the Banana River, and the Indian River.

Because its waterways are so isolated, it’s a perfect place to go bioluminescent kayaking in Florida.

Off the Atlantic Coast of Florida, this is one of the most biodiverse places in the Northern Hemisphere! The Indian River Lagoon is home to more than 4,300 species of plants and animals in addition to the plankton that causes bioluminescence.

Most kayaks launch from Mosquito Lagoon. As miserable as that sounds (remember when we said to pack bug spray?) this is your best chance to see bioluminescence in the Indian River Lagoon! You’ve been warned!

Cocoa Beach

Besides being a quaint beach town and one of the best surfing spots in all of Florida , Cocoa Beach and its shorelines aren’t just great for families .

They’re the last great place to catch a glimpse of bioluminescence in Florida!

For the best views, you’re going to want to venture around Cape Canaveral. Specifically, the Banana River Aquatic Preserve. Because it is flanked on both sides by nothing but roads with no major development, it is completely isolated!

Its isolated nature makes it perfect for bioluminescent kayaking in Florida! The most popular launch sites can be found along the Banana River, where there are many guided tours to take advantage of!

Cocoa Beach bioluminescence kayak tours will be a highlight of your Florida vacation!

Tips For Getting Good Photos Of The Blue Water

Bioluminescence is notoriously hard to capture on camera. In fact, a lot of tours will discourage you from trying to take pictures on your phone because you’ll waste so much time trying to get a shot that you’ll miss the beauty.

However, capturing the magical lights is not impossible. It can be tricky if you don’t have the right camera. The reason it’s so difficult is because the light emitted from the organisms is very dim!

For the best results, you’re definitely going to want to use a DSLR camera. Any premium low-light camera will do the trick.

You’ll want to use a smaller aperture (f/5) so the amount of light entering the camera is lower. This way the depth of focus is increased so you can capture more of the light.

The recent development in smartphone technology has made capturing bioluminescence easier, but it’s still not a piece of cake for an amateur.

While the camera quality has gone up, you’re still going to want to purchase an app that will utilize low-light technology.

Bioluminescence in Florida

BIOLUMINESCENCE IN FLORIDA

Bioluminescence information & activities, what is bioluminescence.

Bioluminescence is a glowing spectacle that should be experienced at least once in a lifetime! Many people have heard of bioluminescence, but did you know it can be experienced right here in Florida? Off the east coast of Florida is where you’ll most likely experience bioluminescence during the summer months of May through October. This type of bioluminescence in Florida is known as dinoflagellates, and is what most people picture when they think of bioluminescence (we call this “dino bio”). Whether it’s a glowing wave, a dolphin gliding by in the glowing waters, mullet splashing into the bio, manatees illuminated underwater like a submarine, there’s many ways to experience the dino bio! However, you can actually experience some sense of bio year round via ‘comb jellies’.

The dino bio ignites with any movement in the water. When looking at the still water filled with dinoflagellates, you likely won’t see any glow. However, when you create movement in the water, you will illuminate the stunning Florida bioluminescence. This is what makes the bioluminescence so difficult to capture on videos or photos — there must be movement. Florida is quickly becoming a bucket list for bioluminescent enthusiasts from all around the world. There’s only a small handful of places in the world where the bioluminescence is continually predictable year-over-year, and the east coast of Florida is one of the brightest! The amount of dinoflagellates in peak bioluminescent season in the Indian River Lagoon are almost incomprehensible. There’s been reports of over 100,000 per liter.

THE BEST WAY TO VIEW THE BIOLUMINESCENCE

There’s a few really important factors when it comes to viewing Florida bioluminescence:

Check the moon phase when preparing to see bioluminescence in Florida. The brighter the moon, the harder it may be to see the bioluminescence. Moonlight can reflect on top of the water. Bioluminescence will appear the best and brightest when it’s pitch black.

TIME OF YEAR

Typically, peak season for bioluminescence in Florida is July & August, but still visible between May and October. A good rule of thumb to go by- the warmer the water temperatures are, the brighter the bioluminescence will be!

a close up of a keyboard

WEATHER CONDITIONS

If you’re looking for the most ideal bioluminescent viewing conditions, be aware the weather before you go! For the best viewing, typically you’ll want to find a night that is free from thunderstorms, with low wind speeds and warmer temperatures.

shape, arrow

Choosing the right location is a key factor when trying to find best and brightest bioluminescence in Florida. You’ll want to look for locations that typically have calmer waters, no artificial light pollution, mangroves, and warm water temperatures.

FLORIDA BIOLUMINESCENT EXPERIENCES

Ready to witness a magical phenomenon? Florida’s bioluminescence can be experienced in many ways, but here are our recommendations:

BIOLUMINESCENT CLEAR KAYAKING TOUR

florida bioluminescence kayaking tour

Take a bioluminescent clear kayak tour in Florida! Get up close to the water level that’s best for seeing the bio. Bio can be brighter just a few feet away from the shore than it may be up right against the shore. You may also see wildlife swimming through the bio, such as dolphins, manatees, fish, and more! Bioluminescence kayaking in Florida is best experienced with a clear kayak tour. Get Up And Go Kayaking is the top-rated outdoor activity in the world, and offers amazing clear kayak tours. They even offer a VIP Filmed Bioluminescent Experience — the first of its kind in the world! All bioluminescence kayaking tours will be led by a trained tour guide that will provide extra information and local knowledge. Book now!

TAKE A BIO BOAT TOUR

Riding in a boat can also be an amazing experience and one that we think is underrated when looking to view the bio. A bioluminescent boat tour can bring you to amazing places in search of the brightest bio. Along the way, search for dolphins, manatees, schools of mullet, and much more. Space Coast Eco Tours offers an amazing boat tour with local knowledge of the waterways to find the best bio for viewing experience.

SEARCH THE SHORELINE

If you’re not one for a tour, we suggest searching the shoreline for bioluminescence! This method may be a bit more hit or miss, as you’re only able to see the waters glow right along the shoreline. If you choose this method, we recommend kicking off your shoes and splashing the water with your feet to see if there’s a glow present. This is also a good method to find comb jellies. Click here to learn more about comb jellies.

TAKE YOUR OWN VESSEL

This is our least suggested method unless you have extensive knowledge of the waterway and property safety gear. This is the most risky method considering how dark it’ll be while you’re on the water. If you do intend on using your own vessel, we recommend paddling with a group, having whistles handy, using lights on your vessel and life preservers, having an emergency plan, and never going too far from the shore!

In this article, we tell you everything you need to know about bioluminescence in Florida.

This includes explanations, tips, what to wear and of course, the best places for bioluminescent kayaking in Florida!

🔎 Table of Contents

What is bioluminescence?

Bioluminescence is light produced and emitted by living things. It’s due to chemical reactions in their bodies.

Most of the bioluminescent organisms are fish, jellies and plankton. As a general thing, it’s very much of an ocean thing but there are also a few land ones as well.

What causes bioluminescence in Florida?

Bioluminescence is not a phenomenon that you can admire everywhere in the world. It’s pretty unique and places like J ervis Bay , in Australia or Florida , in the USA are particularly famous for it.

Florida is home to several species of bioluminescent sea creatures including dinoflagellates (plankton), comb jellyfish, snapping shrimps and fireflies.

Best time for bioluminescence Florida

Summer is known as the best time of the year to see bioluminescence in Florida. While this is the case, it’s not the only time of the year that you can admire the phenomenon.

Bioluminescence in Florida happens pretty much all year round, just with different species.

Summer months (May to October) are best for plankton bioluminescence.

In the winter months, you can still see it but it will be produced by comb jellies this time.

Bioluminescence is one of the best things to do in Florida during the summer, especially since it’s not the busy season but do not worry, even if you are visiting in winter, you’ll get to experience it as well.

In terms of days, the best time to see the bioluminescence is around the new moon.

This is because it’s much smaller than any other moon.

The light doesn’t reflect on the water so you get to see the beautiful blue light much better.

If you can, avoid the full moon as there is a lot of light that reflects on the water.

That said, if you can’t change the date and happen to be visiting during the full moon, you can still get to see it.

In this case, it would be more even more recommended to book a guided tour as the guides will make sure to bring you to spots that are better during the full moon.

How to see the bioluminescence in Florida?

The best way to experience it is with a kayak, at night.

Obviously, you need as little light as possible to see the bioluminescence so your adventure will have to be at night.

In terms of “transportation”, the best way is to take a kayak so you can be very close to the water.

If you can, opt for a clear kayak so you can even see the light under your legs!

It’s recommended to book a guided kayak tour for this. You will be with a local guide who knows exactly where to go.

Also, he will explain everything about it. It’s very interesting!

In terms of safety, it’s always better to opt for a tour when you are kayaking at night but it’s also the best way to make sure you don’t miss out on anything!

What to wear for bioluminescent kayaking in Florida

Usually, when you go kayaking in Florida , you would just put a bikini on. This is not quite the case for bioluminescent kayaking.

Firstly, you need to remember that it will be at night which means it will be a bit chillier than during the day.

Secondly, the areas where you will go are all known for being home to many mosquitoes.

Knowing all of that, make sure to wear:

  • Long pants and long sleeves. If you can, wear long comfy pants and a T-shirt with long sleeves. This is mainly so you don’t get attacked by mosquitoes. It doesn’t need to be warm. As a matter of fact, you might even want to take something quite light and airy so you’re not too hot. If you are doing it in winter though, you may want to opt for something a bit warmer. If you have a wet suit, this will do perfectly. Bear in mind that while you’re not supposed to get entirely wet, you may get a tiny bit wet so make sure you don’t mind your clothes getting wet.
  • Insect repellent. Again, you can never be too careful with this so put on insect repellent before starting the tour.
  • Water shoes. You will need some sort of shoes for this one. You will be walking in the dark before going on the kayak so it’s better to wear some sort of water sandals to make sure you don’t walk on anything potentially sharp.

Best places for bioluminescent kayaking in Florida

Now, are you ready to discover the best places to see bioluminescence in Florida while kayaking? Let’s get started!

Indian River Lagoon

Located on the Atlantic Coast of Florida, Indian River Lagoon is one of the best places in Florida to see bioluminescence.

The shoals of planktons in the Indian River lagoon glow at night, offering you one of the most surreal kayaking experiences you will ever have.

When paddling here (especially in the warm summer weather), you are likely to see algae, seaweed, marine life but the epitome of this adventure is how these marine animals and fish glow when swimming close to your kayak.

The waterway is isolated, which makes it an excellent location to observe the bioluminescence.

There is a man-made canal, the Haulover canal, from where you can launch your kayak and then paddle east, under the drawbridge and past the Manatee Observation deck.

The locals and guides will offer you more information on where to head for the best bioluminescent experience on the lagoon.

Make sure you carry your camera with you so that you can immortalize the experience. Manatee sighting is a common activity in this location.

Cocoa Beach

Cocoa Beach in Florida

Cocoa Beach is well known as a great surfing destination.

The small beach town is a haven for water sports lovers.

When you are not lounging on the clean, sandy beach, you can always hop onto your kayak to enjoy a slow evening watching bioluminescence in the water.

During the warmer months (closest to the new moon), you can see dinoflagellates glowing beautifully around your kayak, and during the cooler months, comb jellies are plenty.

The comb jellies are active from November through March. They do not sting and once you touch them inside the water, they emit a beautiful bluish glow.

Because the phenomenon is so unique, it’s highly recommended to book a guided tour.

The local guides know the area like the back of their hand and will bring you to the best spots while explaining everything you need to know.

Kayaking tours last approximately two hours.

Cape Canaveral

If you want to stay away from the crowds, you can also launch your kayak from Cape Canaveral, a more isolated spot that makes it ideal for this kind of sporting activity.

Cape Canaveral is famous for being America’s launch pad. It’s one of the NASA bases and home to the Kennedy Space Center.

If you love everything that has to do with space and rockets, that’s the perfect place to visit.

However, while most people rush to the Kennedy Space Center, most visitors ignore that Cape Canaveral is also a destination in its own right.

It is known by the locals as one of the best places for bioluminescence kayaking near Orlando and Cocoa Beach.

The best way to discover the glowing plankton here is to opt for a guided tour.

There are local guides to direct you to where you can see the glowing fish and believe us, they are in abundance!

You can also choose whether you prefer a solo or a tandem kayak.

Merritt Island National Wildlife refuge

Located on the Atlantic Coast, Merritt Island is another famous spot for bioluminescence kayaking in Florida.

It lies between Cocoa Beach and Titusville which is particularly convenient.

As you may have gathered by now, this area is where you will find the most bioluminescence in Florida and therefore, you will have a lot of options.

This large barrier island is home to thousands of unique species of birds, fish and mammals. You can even find endangered species here. There are also great hiking opportunities here including the Great Florida Birding Trail.

All in all, it’s a great place to visit if you want to discover what unspoilt Florida truly looks like.

As there are many bioluminescent spots on this island and as the access can sometimes be restricted by NASA, the best way to explore is to join a kayak tour at night.

This tour starts at the Haulover canal but will take a different direction compared to the first one mentioned. You will be heading to the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge which is an area of protected wetlands. It’s beautiful!

Fort De Soto Bioluminescence tours

Fort De Soto in Florida

The lagoons and bays around Fort De Soto County Park also offer opportunities (albeit limited) for bioluminescence kayaking.

The park makes up for this limitation with other numerous attractions, including museums, lush foliage, and beautiful beaches.

If you want to have a fulfilling bioluminescence kayaking adventure here, come during the warmer months.

You will find planktons, and at night when they are disturbed by other marine life (dolphins, manatees, or alligators) they glow beautifully.

Dinoflagellates are numerous in Tampa Bay and when the timing is right, they light up the waters, providing a unique, exciting, and ecstatic experience to people kayaking here at night.

There are five islands in Fort De Soto Park and each one has a waterfront and a beautiful beach from where you can launch your kayak to enjoy the bioluminescence adventure.

Titusville is the home to NASA (an attraction by itself), wildlife refuges, and beautiful spots where your family can engage in bioluminescence kayaking.

There are three main launch sites in Titusville; the Haulover Canal South, the Haulover Canal North, and Beacon 42. Each kayaking site offers a distinctively unique experience.

The Haulover Canal North is the most popular launching site, used by numerous tour companies offering daytime and nighttime adventures.

Opting for a bioluminescence kayak tour in Titusville is an excellent idea as you will get to learn so much more about the phenomenon and the area.

Here are the options available:

  • From Haulover canal . You will also have the choice between the Indian River Lagoon or Banana River kayak tour. The tour lasts 1h30. See prices.
  • From Beacon 42. The unique thing about this one is that you will be using clear kayaks, making the experience even better! This tour lasts 1 hour and a half as well. Everything is included. If you are lucky, you may even see some manatees! See prices.

Whether you will be using a company to tour this area or on your own, you are in for an amazing treat.

Manatee and alligator sightings are common, especially during the day.

Dolphins love to splash and play in the glowing waters at night, making beautiful blue-colored waves as they swim beneath your kayak.

Planktons are unusually many during June through October.

Be sure to watch out for otters, mullets, and pelicans as well when kayaking in Titusville.

Mosquito Lagoon

This lagoon is part of the Space Coast that also comprises the Indian River Lagoon and the Banana Lagoon.

During the summer season, billions of dinoflagellates emit bluish light whenever they are disturbed by human activity or by marine life.

You will enjoy watching the waves your paddle makes with every stroke, how your kayak seems to pave a bluish-white way in the dark water, or watching a dolphin swim beneath your kayak, its large body seeming somewhat magnified by the hue.

You can rent a kayak on the lagoon if you decide not to bring yours for the trip. Kayak launching is done at the Haulover Canal in Merritt Wildlife Refuge.

You can also opt to book a kayak tour . It’s pretty affordable and great value for money. Click here to see the prices.

This location is called Mosquito lagoon for good reason, so ensure you carry a mosquito spray with you.

Banana River

This is one of the most popular bioluminescence locations in Cocoa Beach.

It is also very crowded, with numerous guided tours launching from here every night.

You are assured of seeing manatees, stingrays or mullets as they speed beneath your boat.

Planktons are many and they create a wonderful glow whenever you glide above them in your kayak.

If you have a see-through kayak, you will have a magnificent experience.

Pandora, the World of Avatar

Located at Animal Kingdom, in Disney World , the Pandora is a themed section (after the movie avatar) that features bioluminescent plants, marine life, alien forms, mountains that float, and other numerous attractions in true Disney style.

This is a man-made feature and your kids will still enjoy the experience of kayaking on a water mass where the fish illuminate when they are disturbed- as if on cue.

Be sure to check out the other entertainment options inside this place while you are here.

The Econlockhatchee River

There is a stunning 8-mile stretch of the Econlockhatchee River that passes through the Little Big Econ State Forest, providing excellent grounds for kayaking, paddling, and swimming.

During the day, whitewater rafting is a popular activity here. There are several guided tours as well.

This section of the river takes you through a delightful wilderness where all sorts of birds and wildlife reside.

Although the river is winding, it forms a large sandy beach every time it makes a turn, and these are the places where bioluminescence occurs at night.

It might not be as vivid as some of the other locations here (such as the Space Coast: Banana River, Mosquito Lagoon, and Indian River) but you can still see planktons and millions of dinoflagellates glow with every stroke your paddle makes in the water.

The 7 Steps of a Bioluminescence Tour

  • Once we have all gathered at the location of your bioluminescence tour, your guide will fit you with life jackets and go over the details of your trip.
  • It’s a good idea to wear bug spray to avoid being harassed by mosquitos.
  • We will launch into the water just after sunset. Immediately, guests usually encounter manatees and wild birds in the cove before they have ventured out into the Indian River Lagoon.
  • As the sky darkens, you can begin to see the glow in the water from the paddle, kayak movement, and the movement of fish and other marine life. As we paddle closer to the shore, it is usually completely dark at this time. We begin to take in the magic of bioluminescence. Every movement, from manatee, fish, stingrays produces an almost supernatural glow of aquamarine light. As one of our guests said recently, “it’s a truly amazing experience, like watching fireworks underwater”.
  • The bioluminescent kayaking tour is usually 1.5 to 2 hours. Adventure Kayak will provide you will water, a short lesson on kayaking for beginners, and everything you need to have the best experience possible.
  • This tour is great for couples as well as families and small and large groups alike. Large groups often experience even more bio as there is more movement going on in the tour.
  • You can read more reviews by searching for us on Google or Trip Advisor.

Me and my family were going to go on a fun little trip with our 3 little kids for the last day of our vacation. 15 minutes before we had to be there and 45 minutes into the DRIVE to get there they cancelled on us. I do understand that the cancellation policy is on the website but we were not planning to cancel. As they canceled on us. We called the place back asking for some sort of refund as they canceled on US. Not to mention the guy who answered the phone had ABSOLUTELY NO sympathy whatsoever. So not only we got $300 taken from us, we were also treated with a major attitude. He said we could we could reschedule but as I said this was our last day and we live 2000 miles away. I do not understand how this business is still running with thier disgraceful customer service and thier policy on cancellations even though WE did not cancel THE BUSINESS cancelled. I do not advise choosing this place as it is a total scam and there are rude staff that run this place. The man made a reference on disney and how they don’t do refunds. Well disney does not just cancel on you as this place did. This is absolutely disgusting and ridiculous how they canceled on us and we did not get our money back. Absolutely ridiculous. Florida bioluminescence tours

Bioluminescence tours - top rated things to do in orlando, glowing algae in the indian river lagoon near titusville, florida.

Looking for Things to Do near Orlando for the Weekend?

Bioluminescence kayaking tours have become a top attraction for Orlando visitors and locals alike.  Just a 1 hour drive from downtown, it's worth seeing the Indian River Lagoon (near Kennedy Space Center) in all its nighttime magic. Find our why this is called Florida's bioluminescent bay!  The location is near Cocoa Beach and Titusville, and home to launch sites for Space-X and NASA.

Florida Bioluminescence is Famous

During the summer, you are likely to see some of the brightest bioluminescence in the world in the rivers near Cocoa Beach and Titusville. The summer bioluminescence is glowing plankton. But what makes Florida unique in the world for the best bioluminescence is that there is bioluminescence in the waters year round.  In the winter, you will see glowing jellies floating to the surface and lighting up as you go paddling by.  There are also Snapping Shrimp that are bioluminescent, and of course the ever faithful Fire Fly!

This Place is a National Treasure

Did you know the Indian River Lagoon is considered a national treasure?  The northern end where we launch bioluminescence tour is part of the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge that was created in the 1960s along with the space program at Kennedy Space Center.  This 104,000 acres of natural preserve is famous for many reasons - one of them is that is the #1 place to see bioluminescence in Florida.

Bio Luminous Sea Life

The bio bay is actually a brackish lagoon that is the largest natural fish hatchery on the east coast of the USA.  This means many types of sea life spawn here.  The estuary is teeming with water creatures, including at least three that light up.   There are dinoflagellates (glowing algae) that light up the water with a bright blue-green glow in summer.  In winter, there are comb jellies that light up like little light bulbs in the water.  Also, there are snapping shrimp which create "sono-luminescence."  This is hard to see, but the snapping sound they make, creates a quick spark.  All of the creatures light up as a way to avoid predators.

Bioluminescence History

People have been reporting glowing water in Florida for hundreds of years. People used to call it "phosphorescence."  The first recorded mention of bioluminescence was from a scientist researching marine life in the Bahamas in 1906.  He called the luminescent algae Pyrodinium bahamense - Bahamian fire water!  Here in Florida, fisherman in the lagoon have many tales about the water lighting up in the darkness of night.  Perhaps that is why the manatees that frequent the lagoon seems like magical mermaids - the bioluminescent plankton that coats their body makes them glow in the dark!

Bioluminescent Kayaking Tours

We have tours departing every night of the week during summer - June to Sep 30th.  Reserve your spot for a neon night on the water!
