920th Rescue Wing performs dramatic medical rescue at sea from cruise ship in Atlantic

A dramatic helicopter rescue at sea by Brevard-based military personnel has captured international attention. The rescue from a cruise ship sailing off the Atlantic coast involved a child with a medical emergency.

The 920th Rescue Wing said it successfully conducted the civilian medical airlift operation of a patient aboard the Carnival Venezia while the cruise ship was more than 350 nautical miles off the East Coast on Saturday.

The rescue involved a child with a medical condition and the child's mother. Details about the patient were not disclosed.

In a statement from the 920th Rescue Wing at Patrick Space Force Base, officials said that, within hours of receiving the call for assistance, the 920th Rescue Wing prepared and launched a rescue force consisting of two HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters, two HC-130J Combat King II aircraft and two teams of combat rescue officers and pararescuemen to fly to the cruise ship. The personnel safely removed the patient from the ship for transport to a medical center.

When the mission commander arrived on location, two HC-130J aircraft circled the airspace to assess the situation and assumed on-scene command. Then, HH-60 helicopters approached the ship to execute the rescue.

Officials said pararescue personnel were hoisted down, and immediately began preparing the patient. Then the patient and his mother were hoisted up into the helicopter, where the boy received medical attention while on route to a hospital.

“Everyone in the wing mobilized with exceptional speed," said Capt. Dylan Gann, a pilot with the 301st Rescue Squadron. "By uniting our efforts, we saved crucial time, delivering life-saving assistance six hours ahead of other response teams. Our collective determination and efficiency ensured the successful rescue and transport of the individual in need.”

Reaching the ship’s remote location required three helicopter air-to-air refuelings. Those refuelings involve connecting a probe from the helicopter to a drogue on the HC-130J aircraft, allowing fuel transfer mid-flight.

Officials said, as part of this mission, the wing assembled an operations center battle staff to coordinate all aspects of the rescue. This included everything from personnel to monitor weather in the rescue zone to flight doctors used to find the right treatment facility for the patient. The information was transmitted to the rescue force while they were on the way to the scene.

They said the mission encompassed more than eight hours, with the patient successfully transferred to a hospital in the United States.

In commenting on the rescue, Lt. Col. John Lowe, 920th Operations Group commander, said: “This is what ready now looks like. These real-world missions are what our countless hours of training have prepared us for. Rescue was able to plan and execute this mission without hesitation. This combined arms team is highly trained in their field while understanding what role they play in the bigger picture and led to the successful completion of the mission."

The Carnival Venezia had been on a 10-day cruise from New York City to the Eastern Caribbean when the medical emergency occurred.

In a statement, Carnival Cruise Line said: "Carnival Venezia's team worked with United States Coast Guard and Air Force officials to adjust its course Saturday so a medical helicopter could rendezvous with the ship when a guest on board needed treatment ashore. The ship then resumed its route to New York, arriving as scheduled Monday morning."

Based at Patrick Space Force Base, the 920th Rescue Wing is Air Force Reserve Command’s only combat search-and-rescue wing. Its primary mission is to plan, lead and conduct military rescue operations and missions to deny adversaries exploitation of isolated personnel.

The U.S. Coast Guard says it has airlifted a Carnival cruise passenger to safety after the woman began experiencing health problems while the ship was traveling to Greenland.

The rescue happened 180 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, on Labor Day.

"At 6:35 p.m., First Coast Guard District command center watchstanders received a report from the Carnival Legend that a woman on board the cruise ship was experiencing abdominal pains and had been vomiting throughout the day. The vessel was in route to Greenland from Cape Cod," the Coast Guard said in a statement.

"A Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Massachusetts, MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and a HH-144 Ocean Sentry aircrew were launched to assist," it added.

Around 10:30 p.m. Monday, the Coast Guard arrived at the ship’s location and "safely hoisted patient and the cruise ship nurse at around 11 p.m.," officials said.

The patient was later transferred to "emergency medical services" around midnight after the helicopter arrived back on land.

Carnival Cruise Line did not immediately respond to a request for comment from FOX Business.

Sector San Diego rescues

Four passengers in medical distress were evacuated by U.S. Coast Guard helicopters based in San Diego from three different cruise ships during a 24-hour period this weekend.

The rescues began at 7:10 p.m. Friday, when a woman suffering from a progressive acute illness was hoisted off the cruise ship Carnival Panorama, officials said.

The Coast Guard 11th District Rescue Coordination Center in Alameda received a medevac request from the captain of the cruise ship, which at that time was 165 miles south of San Diego.

The vessel and an MH-60 Jayhawk aircrew from Coast Guard Sector San Diego rendezvoused 100 miles south of the city. The woman, 47, was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in San Diego in serious condition.

Later that evening the Coast Guard received reports of a 74-year-old woman suffering from stroke-like symptoms and a 77-year-old woman suffering from kidney failure, both on the cruise ship Majestic Princess.

At the time of the request, the cruise ship was about 500 miles west of Los Angeles. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew met the ship about 10 a.m. Saturday 150 miles southwest of Point Conception. Both patients were transferred to Scripps Memorial.

At 12:20 p.m. Saturday, another woman with stroke-like symptoms was hoisted off the cruise ship Carnival Spirit, about 86 miles west of San Clemente Island.

Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles Long Beach notified Joint Harbor Operations Center San Diego of the medevac request from the Carnival ship. The helicopter crew that was completing the rescue of the two passengers from the Majestic Princess was diverted to respond to the Carnival Spirit.

The woman, 84, was transported for emergency medical services at Coast Guard Sector San Diego.

The Coast Guard Rescue 6019 aircrew flew more than seven hours between the three medical evacuations on Friday and Saturday.

479 Cruise Passengers Airlifted to Safety After Mayday as 'Chaos' Aboard Ship Goes Viral Online

Footage shows the cruise "taking on water" after a door burst open, according to one passenger

cruise ship passengers airlifted

Update: The Viking Sky safely returned to port in Molde, Norway, on Sunday afternoon. All passengers have disembarked and are on their way home, according to Reuters . Torstein Hagen the billionaire founder of Viking was reportedly on site to meet many of those who had been airlifted from the boat by a helicopter in a daring rescue.

He told TV2 that, “They’ve had a bit of a shocking experience,” noting “Most of our passengers are senior citizens…imagine what it’s like to hang their on that wire. It must have been a terrible experience but they seem to have handled it very well.” He also stated, “We all want to know how this could have happened. I’m sure there will be plenty of time to point fingers at what could and should have been done, but that’s for later. Something like this shouldn’t happen, but it has.”

The Viking Sky cruise ship forced to evacuate nearly one-third of its passengers after it suffered engine problems amid stormy weather was safely headed back to shore Sunday, as those who left the vessel recalled the frightening ordeal.

The cruise ship sent out a distress signal Saturday after it experienced a “loss of engine power off the coast of Norway near Molde” with 915 guests and 458 crew on board, a Viking spokesperson told PEOPLE in a statement.

But as of 10 a.m. local time Sunday, the ship was safely traveling to Molde under its own power.

“The ship is being accompanied by two offshore supply ships and one tug assist vessel. The evacuation of passengers has ended and there are currently 436 guests and 458 crew onboard,” the spokesperson said. “The 479 passengers who were airlifted from the vessel are currently on shore and arrangements have been made to fly them home, with the first passengers leaving today. Currently we understand 20 people have suffered injuries as a result of this incident, and they are all receiving care at the relevant medical centers in Norway, with some already having been discharged.”

The Associated Press reported that authorities told Norwegian public broadcaster NRK that the inclement weather was interfering with rescue efforts, as it prevented workers from using lifeboats as rescue vehicles.

Passengers on the ship chronicled the harrowing ordeal on social media, first capturing the damage done by the weather to the vessel, and later evacuations via helicopter.

Passenger Ryan Flynn shared video to Twitter of a crowd of passengers wearing life jackets as water flooded the ground beneath them.

He later shared footage of his 83-year-old father being airlifted off the ship and into a rescue helicopter.

Passenger David Hernandez also tracked the rescue on Twitter, praising the crew for ensuring passengers remained calm.

“Still on board #VikingSky 15 hours on. Awaiting evacuation. Crew has been fantastic keeping everyone calm and fed. Seas are still rough with winds of 40 knots,” he wrote .

Hernandez said he was eventually evacuated off the boat and received help from the Red Cross .

“It was just chaos,” passenger John Curry told NRK, according to the Guardian . “The helicopter ride from the ship to shore I would rather not think about. It wasn’t nice.”

Passengers Derek and Esther Browne also opened up about their experience, telling BBC Radio 5 Live it was “frightening.”

“We had a few people on stretchers, several with cuts, two with broken limbs, but fortunately we were all right. We were airlifted on to the helicopter, which was quite a frightening experience,” Derek said, according to The Telegraph . “I’d never been in a helicopter before, there were a lot of high winds.”’

RELATED VIDEO: Cruise Ship Battered by Rough Waters Due to Hurricane Michael

The outlet reports the rescue operation included four helicopters and several vessels, and that 60 volunteers from the Norwegian Red Cross took part.

American passenger Rodney Horgen explained that being rescued by the helicopter was like being brought to safety by an “angel” — but that the one-by-one evacuation process made it difficult to accept help.

“The worst thing I could say for me was walking to get in line for the helicopter,” Horgen told NRK, according to NBC News . “You had to walk past a lot of people and their faces. That was hard — I did not want to go.”

According to cruisemapper.com , the Viking Sky was in the middle of a 12-day trip. The ship departed from Bergen, Norway on March 14 and was expected to dock at a London port on March 26.

“Throughout all of this, our first priority was for the safety and wellbeing of our passengers and our crew,” a spokesperson for Viking said in a statement. “We would like to thank the Norwegian Redningssentral and the Norwegian emergency services for their support and skill displayed in managing the situation in very challenging weather conditions. We would also like to thank the local residents who throughout the whole process have been extremely supportive and hospitable.”

The U.S. Coast Guard last week airlifted a 3-year-old girl from a moving cruise ship about 90 miles off the Santa Barbara coast after she suffered a medical emergency.

The Coast Guard said in a statement that the girl was rescued Wednesday afternoon after Princess Cruises ’ Emerald Princess ship reported a young passenger experiencing “seizure-like symptoms.”

Body-camera footage from a Coast Guard aircrew member who was lowered onto the ship showed the helicopter hovering just above the swimming pool and artificial turf on the Emerald Princess’ top deck. The child was seated on a gurney outside of a spa, the footage shows. The ship’s medical staff stood nearby as the girl leaned against her mother.

The child was handed a teddy bear before being wheeled to the deck, placed in a metal basket and lifted alongside her mother into an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from San Diego.

The girl and her mother were transported to Harbor UCLA Medical Center. The child was in stable condition, according to the Coast Guard.

More than 1,000 passengers are being airlifted one-by-one to safety from a cruise ship after its engines failed in stormy conditions.

Police said 16 people have been taken to hospital after being airlifted from the Viking Sky, three of them with serious injuries.

The cruise ship was carrying about 1,300 passengers and crew, including 200 Britons, when it sent mayday signals off the west coast of Norway.

Those who have been rescued have spoken of their fear as they were taken on one of the five available helicopters getting them back to land.

Viking Sky near the west coast of Norway where it was able to anchor

An update in the early hours of Sunday morning (GMT) indicated about 230 people had been brought safely off the ship.

It is slow work, and continued through the night. Per Fjeld, of the joint rescue centre in Southern Norway, said the remaining passengers were not in any danger, and the rescues would speed up when there was better light and weather.

The waves were 6-8m (20-26ft) high, and the wind blew at 24m per second, the Norwegian Meteorological Institute said.

"It's a demanding exercise, because they (the passengers) have to hang in the air under a helicopter and there's a very, very strong wind," witness Odd Roar Lange told NRK.

The storm was expected to last until at least midnight local time (11pm UK time).

A freighter with a crew of nine was also being evacuated nearby after suffering engine failure too. Two of the five helicopters had to be diverted in order to rescue them before returning to the Viking Sky.

Emergency services have been airlifting the passengers one by one

The Viking Sky is anchored about 1.5 miles from land after the crew managed to restart one engine.

"We were having lunch when it began to shake," American passenger John Curry told NRK.

"Window panes were broken and water came in. It was just chaos.

"The trip on the helicopter I would rather forget. It was not fun."

Two helicopters assist Viking Sky

A spokesman for Viking Cruises said: "The ship is proceeding on its own power and a tugboat is on site. The evacuation is proceeding with all necessary caution.

"A small number of non-life threatening injuries have been reported. Guests are being accommodated in local hotels when they arrive back on shore, and Viking will arrange for return flights for all guests."

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "We are in touch with Norwegian authorities and stand ready to help any British people who require our assistance."

The cruisemapper.com website said the Viking Sky was on a 12-day trip that began on 14 March in the western Norwegian city of Bergen.

Built in 2017, it belongs to Viking Ocean Cruises - part of the Viking Cruises group founded by Norwegian billionaire Torstein Hagen.

According to the company website its passenger capacity is 930.

Dramatic video captured the moment a pregnant woman suffering medical complications was airlifted from a Disney cruise ship.

Footage posted by the US Coast Guard shows a rescuer being lowered onto the Disney Fantasy on Monday in the Atlantic Ocean, about 180 miles northwest of Puerto Rico.

The 35-year-old woman, whose identity was not released, is then seen being raised by a Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk chopper to be flown to a hospital.

“Coast Guard watchstanders in Sector San Juan received a communication from the Disney Fantasy Monday morning requesting medevac assistance as the cruise ship was transiting 260 nautical miles northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico,” the agency said.

The Coast Guard also deployed an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft from Air Station Miami to rendezvous with the cruise ship.

Officials seen on the deck of thy ship.

“Once on scene, the Coast Guard Jayhawk aircrew deployed their rescue swimmer aboard the cruise ship, who prepared a rescue basket and litter to safely hoist the patient and cruise ship doctor aboard the aircraft,” the Coast Guard said.

The woman was transported to the Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where she was treated at Centro Medico Hospital, officials said.

“Our crew was able to quickly, safely, and efficiently execute a long-range MEDEVAC for the patient to receive the higher level of care she required,” Lt. Cmdr. Todd Stephens said in a statement. “This case demonstrates the value of good crew resource management and the capabilities of our Jayhawk helicopter.”

Ensign Michael Riccio, Coast Guard Sector San Juan operations unit leader, said his crew was “glad everything came together to help this passenger.

“The competency displayed by the Disney Fantasy crew and the Coast Guard personnel and units involved made all the difference,” he said.

It was unclear if the woman’s emergency was related to her pregnancy.

The Post has reached out to Disney Cruise Line for comment.

According to the company’s frequently asked questions , women must be no more than 23 weeks pregnant in order to set sail. If they enter the 24th week of pregnancy during the sailing, “they will be refused passage due to safety concerns.”

Passengers Airlifted Off Stranded Cruise Ship in Norway (Update)

J. Scott Clark

Update as of Sunday, March 24, 11:30am ET:

The evacuation of the Viking Sky cruise ship has been suspended. According to CNN , 479 passengers were airlifted off the vessel with 436 passengers and 458 crew members remaining on board. The ship's power has been restored to three of the four engines on board and the boat is making its way to Molde harbor with the assistance of a tug, accompanied by two supply vessels. Footage of the vessel's return was posted to Twitter:

Around 20 injuries have been reported and the Norwegian Red Cross is assisting in treating passengers who are reporting injuries such as cuts, bruises and broken bones.

"Throughout all of this, our first priority was for the safety and well-being of our passengers and our crew," Viking Ocean Cruises said in a statement, thanking Norwegian emergency services and local residents for their support.

The Viking Sky was set to get underway on its next trip on March 27. That sailing has been cancelled by the cruise line.

From Saturday, March 23, 5:30pm ET:

SkyNews is reporting that passengers are being airlifted from a Viking Cruises ship that suffered a full engine failure in heavy seas off the coast of Norway. The Viking Sky has more than 1,300 passengers and crew aboard. As many as eight passengers have reportedly been injured due to the rough sea conditions.

The ship issued a mayday distress call after suffering the engine failure. The boat was drifting towards land and now sits anchored about 1.5 miles from the shoreline. Current reports say that the crew has managed to restart at least one of the ship's massive engines. Passengers are being airlifted one by one via helicopter from the ship. The evacuation is going to take quite some time to complete and is expected to last through the night.

A spokesperson for Viking emailed TPG the following statement:

We can confirm that on March 23rd at 2pm (Norwegian time) the vessel Viking Sky a 47,800 tonne ship travelling from Tromsø to Stavanger, carrying 915 guests and 458 crew experienced a loss of engine power off the coast of Norway near Molde. We are working closely with the relevant authorities and all operational procedures were followed in line with international regulations. In addition Viking has dispatched an operational task force, including the company's owner, to Molde.
Our first priority was for the safety and wellbeing of our passengers and our crew, and in close cooperation with the Norwegian Coast Guard, the captain decided to evacuate all guests from the vessel by helicopter. The ship is proceeding on its own power and a tugboat is on site. The evacuation is proceeding with all necessary caution. A small number of non-life threatening injuries have been reported.

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute says wave heights are reaching upwards of 20-26 feet with wind speeds being clocked at as much as 54 miles per hour. A video shot from a helicopter and posted to Twitter shows just how rough the waters are, moving the ship about like a buoy:

Another video posted to Twitter from passenger Alexus Sheppard shows what's happening inside the ship. Loose furniture rapidly moves from one side of the boat to the other and panels fall from the ceiling as staff still work to comfort frightened passengers. In the second clip, the boat tilts all the way to what appears to be a 45-degree angle.

With the storm forecasted to last until around midnight local time (23:00GMT), passengers on board are in for a rough ride while they wait for evacuation. Temperatures in the area are hovering around 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and the water flooding onto the ship in the video below is likely only about 10 degrees warmer than the frigid coastal air.

According to Bloomberg , the Viking Sky "was on a 12-day trip that began March 14 in the western Norwegian city of Bergen." Evacuated passengers are "being accommodated in local hotels when they arrive back on shore, and Viking will arrange for return flights for all guests," per the Viking spokesperson.

Viking also noted that it is "in the process of updating the website with the latest information and activating special telephone numbers for passengers and their relatives." If you have friends or loved ones aboard the ship, go to https://www.vikingcruises.com/oceans/my-trip/current-sailings/index.html for more information.

Pregnant woman airlifted from Disney cruise ship in dramatic Coast Guard rescue: WATCH

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - A pregnant woman was airlifted from a Disney cruise by the U.S. Coast Guard this week after experiencing medical complications on board.

It all went down in the Atlantic Ocean about 180 miles northwest Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, after a 35-year-old woman said she was experiencing medical complications and required a higher level of medical attention on land, according to a press release from the U.S. Coast Guard.

Cat rescued from Cocoa utility pole after 2 days, firefighters say

The woman was a passenger on the Disney Fantasy. Coast Guard officials coordinated the medevac with the cruise ship and a Coast Guard Jayhawk aircrew was deployed onto the boat. The woman was placed in a rescue basket and was hoisted up into the helicopter.

"Our crew was able to quickly, safely, and efficiently execute a long-range MEDEVAC for the patient to receive the higher level of care she required," said Lt. Cmdr. Todd Stephens. "This case demonstrates the value of good crew resource management and the capabilities of our Jayhawk helicopter."

Drunk Clearwater captain fell off boat while 30 people were attending tour: Police

She was airlifted to an airport in San Juan and local emergency medical services transported her to a local hospital.

"We are glad everything came together to help this passenger," said Ensign Michael Riccio, the operations unit leader for the case in San Juan. "The competency displayed by the Disney Fantasy crew and the Coast Guard personnel and units involved made all the difference."

The woman's current medical condition is unknown at this time.

Pregnant Disney Cruise Passenger Airlifted Off Ship by U.S. Coast Guard: See Video

The 'Disney Fantasy' was 180 miles out at sea when Coast Guard members responded to a medical emergency involving the 35-year-old patient

A video shared by the U.S. Coast Guard on April 16 shows a passenger aboard the Disney Fantasy being airlifted into a helicopter

The Disney Cruise Line ship was located 180 miles from land when the Coast Guard responded to the call

A pregnant passenger aboard the Disney Fantasy was airlifted from the ship after experiencing health complications on April 15.

The Disney Cruise Line vessel was 180 miles northwest of Puerto Rico in the Atlantic Ocean when the passenger “required a higher level of medical care ashore,” according to an April 16 press release from the U.S. Coast Guard.

A video of the incident shows the Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter aircrew executing a medevac in order to transport the patient safely to land by helicopter.

In the harrowing clip, an aircrew member gets lowered by rope onto the ship and at least seven crew members are seen carrying the woman on a stretcher. Per the release, the aircrew’s rescue swimmer then “prepared a rescue basket and litter to safely hoist the patient and cruise ship doctor aboard the aircraft.”

The patient was met by local emergency medical responders at the Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She was then transported to the local Centro Medico Hospital.

According to the release, Coast Guard members first got the call that there was a medical emergency aboard the ship on the morning of Monday, April 15.

“Watchstanders in Sector San Juan received a communication from the Disney Fantasy Monday morning requesting medevac assistance as the cruise ship was transiting 260 nautical miles northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico,” according to the release.
