After two years in the cosmic toolshed while the world was on pause, Demob Happy have returned with Divine Machines – their most ambitious and exploratory album to date. They holed up in remote Wales to hone the sounds and songs that would form this record, emerging only to make appearances opening the main stage at Reading and Leeds festivals, as well as squeezing in a UK headline tour rounded-out with their biggest-ever headline show at a sold-out Scala, London.

Demob Happy preceded ‘the great pause’ with four US tours, appearing at festivals such as: All Points East, Shaky Knees, Sonic Temple, and Mad Cool, and touring support slots with the likes of Royal Blood, Nothing But Thieves, and Jack White. Now back with a fresh record deal and an explosive new album – set for release on May 26th – Demob Happy are fuelled up and revving their engines.

To mark the start of their UK and Europe headline tour, Newcastle via Brighton trio Demob Happy have shared a brand new single ‘Sweet & Sour America ’, out today via Liberator Music . Despite the band’s new album Divine Machines only just being released, ‘ Sweet & Sour America ’ is a previously unheard anthem, adding to the band’s ever-growing, riff-driven repertoire.

Speaking about the meaning behind the new single, Demob Happy frontman Matthew Marcantonio says, “America’s a beautiful place, but we've seen both sides on the tours we've done there, the highs and the lows, and it never fails to strike a chord. This is our ode to the strange dichotomy of America.” Praised for their highly energetic and impeccable live show, the band will embark on their extensive UK and EU headline tour from this evening, with the first show on this run to take place at the iconic Thekla in Bristol. Full date listings are below, after which they’ll be headed stateside for a run of shows with Death from Above 1979.

Demob Happy Promo Shot

With the release of their new album Divine Machines ( listen here ), Demob Happy stepped into a new era, seeing them conquer worlds previously uncharted. In January, the trio unleashed raucous first single ‘Voodoo Science’, earning the covers of The Rock List and New Noise on Spotify, and racking up several plays on BBC Radio 1 with Clara Amfo and Jack Saunders , with the latter stating "it's like Daft Punk got abandoned in the desert and found by Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age.” ‘Voodoo Science’ saw further support from Rolling Stone UK, DIY, CLASH, Dork, Upset, Official Charts and Notion . Louder Sound heralded the single one of their Tracks of The Week, which doomsday follow up ‘Run Baby Run’ also saw inclusion from. ‘Run Baby Run’ additionally earned Demob their first ever BBC 6 Music play.

Since forming more than a decade ago back in hometown Newcastle, Demob Happy have earned every increasingly exciting career milestone through a combination of hard graft and gritty determination that would KO most bands. They’ve gigged incessantly, building on the excitement surrounding 2015 debut album Dream Soda with NME saying “the band balance heaviness with hooks, antagonism with hedonism”, and 2018’s Holy Doom which DIY proclaimed as an “absolute stormer”. Their albums and string of knock out singles since 2019 have seen the band amass well over 45 million collective streams.

They’ve toured the USA four times, gigged with Jack White, Band Of Skulls, Royal Blood, The Amazons (with White even inviting the band on stage to jam), opened the main stage at Reading & Leeds Festival , headlined London’s iconic SCALA and received critical acclaim from The Guardian, Independent, DIY, Kerrang, The Line of Best Fit, Dork, BBC Radio 1 and many more. In between all that, they’ve continued to meticulously hone the inner workings of their practice, with Matthew fine-tuning his production chops to the point where they can take everything in-house.

History has shown that a band’s third album is when shit starts to get real - their particular alchemy stamps its personality in ways that no other configuration of individuals can do; when the outside voices have been tempered and all that’s left is a perfect cocktail of confidence, skill and momentum. It’s a theory that’s been proven time and time again, and one that Demob Happy are underlining with their third album Divine Machines ; one that harnesses their delicate tightrope of heaviness and melody, sweetness and riffs, and rides it up to the stratosphere.

Demob happy - divine machines, rather than innovating or charting new territory, demob happy have doubled down on their strengths..

Demob Happy - Divine Machines

Reviewer: Sam Eeckhout

Released: 26th may 2023, label: liberator.

Steadily, over 10 years and two studio albums, Demob Happy have been polishing and cultivating their niche - metamorphosing their sonic fingerprint into a signature sound. On ‘Divine Machines’, there is a conscious, structured element to the trio’s songwriting, with just enough lemon-squeezed zest on top to make it uniquely engaging. Through rich power chords, multi-faceted vocal work, and a cohesion of riffs to both comfort and disrupt, ‘Divine Machines’ is a full-course meal of rock’n’roll. Take, for example ‘Voodoo Science’, which explodes into a burning and frenetic high-speed chase. Among the 11 carefully constructed tracks are moments of electric urgency, delicate piano, decadent guitar work, and a vocal range that always enhances the instrumentation instead of stealing the spotlight. While there is a parabolic sag through the middle of the record, ‘Divine Machines’ has enough octane to power on from start to finish. Not dissimilar to Arctic Monkeys refining their scrappy indie into slick stadium anthems, it’s the culmination of meticulous attention to detail 10 years in the making. Rather than innovating or charting new territory, Demob Happy have doubled down on their strengths: execution through simplification.

The original meaning of demob happy ties back to WWII in England, with how people felt so happy from the anticipation of the demobilisation of the armed forces. While 13-year-old Marcantonio might have originally felt that about school and the summer holidays approaching, now the band has fully grown into what Demob Happy means to them.
