Journey by Oliver Gustav is an edit of pieces I have curated through intuition and an admiration for the beauty of pure, true quality. My in-house brand Journey by Oliver Gustav marks a new chapter for Studio Oliver Gustav and my work as a creative consultant and interior designer.  The ever-evolving collection is a collage of the way I like to compose intriguing holistic ambiances, where furniture, scents, lighting and art exist in chorus. Figuratively, it represents the way journeys become a source of energy for me that challenge my instinctive compass for collecting and combining beautiful pieces and textures.

JOURNEY | THE NEW CANDLES + LAVA DIFFUSERS

I'm very excited to share with you our new, limited offering of scented candles and lava rock diffusers by Danish designer Oliver Gustav. My dear friend Lee Stanton, antiques expert and owner of beautiful stores in Los Angeles and Montecito , recently returned from a European buying trip where he discovered this special line. After experiencing the scents myself,  I completely fell in love with the collection and wanted to offer my three favorites to my customers as well. The candles come in handsome  iron containers, while the lava rocks are presented on minimalist iron stands. I love their natural, wabi-sabi look, and the incredible artistry of their aromas. 

The Journey Candles 

Not only are they aesthetically beautiful objets, but the scents are unique and complex.

VOLUBILIS: MOROCCO, MIST, RUINS Bright, green, and grassy, like a large bouquet of freshly picked Moroccan mint and peppery oleander. Unlike the mint than you normally smell in products, this feels more like a long ramble through an intoxicating herbal garden.  MA'AT: MYSTERIOUS, EGYPT, SOIL Warm, earthy and richly layered, with notes of resin, amber and sunbaked wood. A smoky, complex blend evocative of sandy desert winds and the deep mysteries of the river Nile.   MMXXI: TABAC, POWERFUL, VIOLET A bold and intriguing mix of lingering tobacco smoke, beds of wild violet, and worn, leather-bound books. Cozy and romantic, like a library in the English countryside. 

Each time you light your scented candle, allow the entire surface to melt, all the way out to the edge of the iron, before extinguishing it. This should take approximately 30 - 40 minutes and should be sufficient for the scent to fill the room. This will guarantee an even burn going forward and will allow you to get the most out of your candle.  After the candle has burned all the way down, you can reuse the iron vessel as a bud vase, storage vessel, or a uniquely simple sculptural element.

The Ma'at Lava Rock Diffuser Kit. 

The lava rock diffuser is best for scenting rooms where you wouldn't want to leave a burning candle. A non-electric, natural way of perfuming small to medium-sized spaces, e ach specimen of  Icelandic lava rock  is an artistic piece in and of itself. Displayed  atop a  solid iron pedestal, you only have to release a couple drops of  the essential oil it comes with onto the stone for the aroma to start permeating your space. Repeat once a week, or as necessary. Refills of the essential oils are also available for individual purchase.

With borders slowly opening for selected countries, and for a minimal stay of six nights only, according to the email I just received from Visit Denmark. A visit to Copenhagen is not within reach for me any time soon… and that is okay although I would have loved to travel to Denmark for 3 days of design. I love the city, the stores and all the beautiful showrooms of our favourite Scandinavian brands. Oliver Gustav  is one of the places I always try to visit when visiting Denmark and when talking with them recently I was happy to receive a few new images of the Copenhagen store. For me it is the perfect store with many sculptural and unique pieces, some antique, some made out of metal and always surprising and a store decorated with a good dose of drama.

Studio Oliver Gustav

Enter the 1920’s “Museumsbygningen”, now studio and exhibition space of creative consultant Oliver Gustav, where you’ll find bespoke furniture, artworks, and curiosities, all carefully curated by a master of visual storytelling.

Art, interiors, and curiosities

Entering Studio Oliver Gustav is like stepping into another world. The beautiful boutique and showroom are situated in the 1920's building, “Museumsbygningen”, which serves as a grand backdrop to a carefully curated array of exquisite art and design pieces. Museumbygningen has always been associated with art and design, and creative consultant Oliver Gustav uses it as both studio, showroom, and boutique.

A world of contrasts

The quiet, yet dramatic atmosphere contrasts the stark and modern against rare antique finds and exquisite curiosities. You’ll see modern, dyed hemp or linen sofas next to cast iron busts, or huge copper room dividers, alongside delicate, graceful wall hangings. There is a sense of Scandinavian minimalism, but also contrasting visual storytelling with glinting metals and translucent fabrics – vases from centuries ago, or stone antiques from the 3 rd millennium BC.

All pieces are from renowned international designers and artists and Gustav himself. You’ll also find “Journey” scented candles developed by Oliver Gustav in collaboration with the French perfumery Mad Et Len. All inspired by Gustav’s globe-trotting around the world to seek out the design and artworks and curiosities on offer. A mix between an art museum and a modern home this is truly a “one of a kind” space in Copenhagen, and not to be missed.

Imagining Timeless Spaces by Oliver Gustav

Oliver Gustav is a creative consultant and designer who has a unique sense of time and space. He turned a historical museum in Copenhagen into his art studio where he brought serenity and aesthetic together. The way he designed Studio Oliver Gustav is not only reflects his style but also creates a timeless place since he uses both modern and antique pieces.

You have made some amazing interior projects. What are the processes and questions to ask before starting a project?

Over time I have managed to define which projects I wish to work on by simply choosing projects that make me happy.

 When consulting design to others, how do you manage your creative journey?


When clients contact us for a project it’s because they have fallen in love with our specific DNA, so our DNA really is the center part of every creative project we take part in. That’s why we always invite clients to our studio in the historical Museum Building for consultations, or in these times of course do an online meeting to present a direction for a project.

How did you develop an intuition to create a room with great aesthetic and ambiance?


My great grandfather lived in Indochina for 25 years and was a huge collector of prehistorical objects and arte facts and it’s my clear believe that being around him and his passion for collecting has developed my style and intuition.  

What makes an art work timeless?


I work a lot with monochromatic color schemes, which easily makes you loose sense of time and place – that can, in itself, make something timeless to me.

What are your favorite materials and textures when designing an interior space?

Honest and natural materials are key to me; anything from old timber, to concrete to natural pigments.
