Cruise ship casinos: Everything you need to know about gambling at sea

Melinda Crow

Cruise ship casino gambling is a big deal to some cruisers. You know how you often hear people on a cruise ship planning their day around the entertainment, tours and mealtimes? Last night, I eavesdropped on a conversation where a group of six people was planning their entire next day around time in the ship's casino.

For other cruisers, the casino is more of an onboard curiosity than anything else. What are all those table games? Do people actually win money — or free cruises — playing in cruise ship casinos?

If you're curious, I've compiled answers to the most common questions people ask about cruise ship casinos. Some of the answers may surprise you.

Do all cruise ships have casinos?

do regent cruise ships have casinos

Most large, mainstream cruise ships have casinos, including the ships of Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, Holland America, Norwegian Cruise Line (other than Pride of America), Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises and Virgin Voyages.

Specialty cruise lines like Disney Cruise Line, Paul Gauguin and most expedition cruise ships do not have casinos. Premium cruise lines Oceania Cruises and Cunard have casinos, while Viking, Azamara and Windstar Cruises do not. (Windstar and Azamara actually removed casinos from their ships and repurposed the space.)

Among the luxury cruise lines, Silversea and Seabourn have casinos on their non-expedition ships; Regent Seven Seas has casinos on all its ships. Smaller luxury ships like those belonging to Ponant, Ritz-Carlton, Scenic and Emerald do not have casinos. River cruise lines do not have casinos on board, even on U.S. rivers where "riverboat" gambling is reserved for casino boats, not river cruise ships.

Are cruise casinos open in port?

With a few exceptions, cruise casinos are not open while ships are in port. They are generally limited to operating while the ship is in international waters. This is why Norwegian's Pride of America doesn't have a casino. Since the ship cruises exclusively in Hawaii, it never leaves U.S. waters.

Cruisers are also often surprised to learn that the casino is closed on some nights during Alaska cruises . Cruises that sail from Victoria, British Columbia, to Seattle on the final night are a good example. The ship goes straight from Canadian waters to U.S. waters without ever reaching international open waters, so the casino closes the night before arrival in Victoria and does not reopen during the cruise.

Ports that currently allow the cruise lines to operate their casinos while the ship is in port include Bermuda and Malta, which require cruise lines to apply for a gaming license. Bermuda has allowed casino operations for licensed ships between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. since 2013. It's an ideal situation as Bermuda has no land-based casinos, and many cruise ships overnight in port on Bermuda cruises. Malta, which does have land-based casinos, allows ships that have been approved for licenses to open their casinos between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Which casino games are on cruise ships?

Gaming in cruise ship casinos usually includes a mix of slot machines and table games, such as three-card poker, Caribbean stud poker, craps, blackjack and roulette. Regionally popular table games like Texas Hold 'em and pai gow may also be available on some sailings.

Can you win money in a cruise ship casino?

do regent cruise ships have casinos

Most cruise ship casino games operate under the same rules and payout percentages you would find in a land-based casino; therefore, the answer is yes, you can win money in a cruise ship casino.

Social media posts and casino announcements would indicate that at least a small handful of people win four- and even occasionally five-figure slot machine payouts on a regular basis. But just as in a land-based casino, it's far easier to lose your stake than it is to win that kind of money.

How many casino points do you need to get a free cruise?

As at land-based casinos, each cruise line offering gambling on board sets its own criteria for earning perks through the line's casino loyalty program or players club. Points are generally tied to the time played and the amount of money you gamble, including the money you win and recirculate.

Much like an airline loyalty program, casino points usually accumulate over a year, earning you better perks as you work toward increasingly higher status levels. Annual free or discounted cruises are one of those perks, often beginning with complimentary (aka comped) inside cabins at relatively low status levels.

Many casinos also let you match casino status from land-based casinos (or even other cruise lines), giving you a leg up. For example, I haven't cruised with Carnival in a while, and I've never played in the line's onboard casinos, but I signed up for the Carnival players club via its Fun Match program. When I registered, I uploaded an offer from a competing cruise line and a players club card from MGM. Now when I log in to Carnival's website, I am shown casino offers that include free and discounted cruises.

Related: How to earn free cruises and perks with casino loyalty programs on land and at sea

Some cruise lines also issue instant awards for the number of points earned (i.e., money spent) on an individual cruise, regardless of status. That would be like an airline awarding free future flights to passengers who spent the most money on their flights, no matter their loyalty status.

Most mainstream cruise lines use comped cruises to fill cabins on dates they anticipate having a surplus of vacancies. These extra offers often appear random, but are generally targeted for marketing purposes rather than as rewards for high amounts of play. New players may receive these comps after low levels of play because cruise lines are always interested in attracting new casino players.

All of that adds up to the possibility of receiving a free cruise for a small number of points earned for cruising, as well as guaranteed free cruises as your points rise to the levels of play set out in the cruise lines' casino loyalty programs.

What is the best casino game to play on a cruise ship?

do regent cruise ships have casinos

The best casino game to play on a cruise ship is the one that is most entertaining for you. Ultimately, you play to have fun, right?

The games that require a combination of skill and luck are the ones where the odds of winning are in your favor. For example, the overall odds on blackjack favor the casino by only 1%, while the casino has a 25% edge overall when it comes to slot machines.

Those odds mean the cruise lines operating casinos will favor slot machine players over card players, both in terms of the number of games provided and the loyalty perks awarded.

In summary, for winning money, the best games are skill games. For earning loyalty perks like free cruises, slot machines are the best choice.

Are drinks free in the casino on cruise ships?

Historically, drinks have not been free to cruise ship casino gamblers the way they usually are in land-based casinos. There are exceptions, however.

Free drinks in the casino are a perk of casino loyalty on Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Princess, Holland America and Norwegian Cruise Line. Reach the required level, and you'll earn free drinks from the casino bar, usually for a full status year. Carnival, Princess and Virgin Voyages also often throw in free drinks (either in the casino or throughout the ship) for individual comped cruises. Everyone actively gambling in the casino gets free well drinks on Celebrity cruises.

In addition, drinks are free in the casinos of luxury cruise lines like Silversea, Seabourn and Regent Seven Seas because all onboard drinks are included in the cruise fare. On the big-ship lines, anyone who purchases a drinks package or cruises on a fare that includes drinks will also be drinking "free" in the casino.

Are cruise ship casinos regulated?

do regent cruise ships have casinos

Cruise ship casinos are regulated in two ways. They typically adhere to the laws of the ship's country of registry. But because gambling normally only takes place while the ship is in international waters, cruise lines that sail from U.S. ports also adhere to the rules set out by the Cruise Lines International Association. Those rules state that all equipment purchased and installed on the vessels of member cruise lines will meet the regulatory standards of the Nevada Gaming Control Board or other licensed jurisdiction for payback and internal software.

Additionally, house rules must be made available in every casino. Each member cruise line is to post at every gaming table minimum and maximum betting limits for each game, and only adults are allowed to play the slots or the tables.

What's the age minimum to gamble in a cruise ship casino?

The minimum age for gambling in a cruise ship casino is 18 in most cases, but there are exceptions. MSC Cruises has a minimum gambling age of 21 on any cruise with a U.S. port; otherwise, the age is 18. Some cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, raise the minimum age to 21 on Alaska sailings.

Do ships run casino tournaments?

Cruise ship casinos on mainstream cruise lines often host tournaments on board featuring various casino games. The list includes slot tournaments, as well as card game tournaments for blackjack and Texas Hold 'em.

Some tournaments are invitational, offered to casino loyalty members of a certain level only. These are often held on cruises hosted specifically for players who have reached that level. For instance, Royal Caribbean holds Signature cruises designed to pamper and entertain these top-level players.

Can you smoke in the casino?

Casinos are often seen as the last bastion of cruise ship smoking freedom (beyond small, designated areas on deck). But the number of ships that offer nonsmoking casinos is steadily growing.

Celebrity Cruises does not allow smoking in its ships' casinos, and the relatively small casinos on luxury ships are generally nonsmoking, as well.

Several lines have hybrid options. For example, some Carnival ships have separate smoking and nonsmoking casinos. Norwegian has separate smoking rooms on some ships; however, cigarette smoking and e-cigarette use are allowed in casinos on ships that don't have separate smoking rooms. Princess does not allow smoking except at designated slot machines, and Holland America also has designated smoking areas in the casino.

Do cruise ship casinos take cash?

do regent cruise ships have casinos

Cruise ship casinos accept cash at both slot machines and table games. As an example, you can sit down at a slot machine and feed in a $20 bill, which is then converted into "credits" on the machine's screen. The value of the credit depends on the denomination of the machine. Alternatively, you might walk up to a roulette table and lay down $20 and exchange that for chips.

The exchange of cash at machines and tables is a one-way deal, even when you win. Slot machines and dealers in cruise ship casinos don't dispense cash. When you finish playing, you may be issued a paper credit slip to take to the cashier's cage for cash, or you may have your winnings loaded directly onto your onboard account on some cruise lines. At the tables, you will take chips to the cashier to exchange back into cash.

If you don't travel with cash, you can find ATMs in the casino or at guest services. Alternatives to cash in cruise ship casinos are paper credit slips, which can be played as cash at either machines or tables, onboard credit or casino free play loaded on your stateroom account, or lines of credit arranged with the casino.

You can also charge gambling money directly to your onboard account like you would charge a drink at a bar or anything else on board. Fees for gambling charges vary among cruise lines, but in most instances, table games charge a service fee, and slot machines do not.

For example, my husband recently requested money from his onboard account at a blackjack table and was charged a 5% surcharge. The ship we were on was not set up to charge onboard accounts directly from the slot machines (sometimes they are), so I had to go to the cashier for a credit slip to play. I was not charged a surcharge, although if I had asked for cash, I would have been. Both of our charges were added to our final onboard bill.

Because there is no fee added to money for slot play, onboard casinos will usually put rules in place about how quickly you can cash out of the machine. The rules are designed to keep cruisers from using slot machines as ATMs to get either cash for the table games or to cash out onboard credit they've been given from the cruise line or their travel agent.

Bottom line

If you like to gamble, cruise ship casinos provide a fun way to spend a sea day or evening on the ship. You can take lessons to learn the games you don't know how to play and even participate in tournaments.

Besides the fun of playing on board, many cruise lines have players clubs that offer onboard perks and even free cruises. And since the odds of winning are about the same as in a U.S. land-based casino, with similar regulations in place, cruise ship casinos are a safe bet for fun and entertainment — though we always encourage you to play responsibly.

12 Must-Have Cruise Casino Tips to Know Before You Play

After the pool and dining room, arguably the most popular spot on a cruise ship is the casino. Cruise passengers love to gamble and (almost) every ship will have plenty of room dedicated to the casino.

do regent cruise ships have casinos

There you’ll find a casino that rivals anything you’d find on land, albeit at a smaller scale. Still, you can play the slots, roll the dice, hope for blackjack, bet on black, and even play a few other games you normally don’t see in regular casinos.

In fact, we’re guessing that anyone who is a fan of casino gambling will feel right at home the moment they step into this spot on the ship. You should know, however, that there are some unique features of cruise casinos that make them a little different than you might be used to seeing.

With that in mind, here are tips you should know for when you play…

Where You’ll Find the Casino on the Ship

do regent cruise ships have casinos

First thing first, where will you find the casino on the ship? Believe it or not, cruise casinos are almost always located in the same general area, no matter your ship.

Cruise ships typically have three decks in the middle of the vessel (often around decks 5-7 or 6-8) that are public areas with bars, lounges, shops, and yes, the casino. You’ll often find the casino located on the bottom of these decks. This way, it’s in a place that’s easy to get to and right near the flow of traffic, but it’s also not right in the middle of everything so the public space completely revolves around gambling.

In other words, it’s close, but not too close.

Don’t Forget Your Keycard

do regent cruise ships have casinos

When you take a cruise, your room keycard is the most important item you can have. It not only opens your cabin, but it also serves as your credit card on the ship. If you want a drink or a souvenir, you simply scan your card and it hits your onboard account.

When it comes to the casino, you need your card, too. It’s inserted or tapped against a reader on the machine to track your play. Just like casinos on land, cruise lines offer programs with perks and rewards based on your play (more on that below).

Perhaps more importantly, some lines — notably, Carnival — put your account balance back onto your keycard instead of a printed out voucher at machines. So you put $20 in the machine and cash out with $30, that money is put on your card. You then insert the card in another machine to tap the balance or go to the cashier to be paid out if you are done playing.

Smoking Is Allowed (Some Have Non-Smoking Sections)

Smoking is heavily restricted on a ship due to safety of the ship (fire is a major worry at sea). You can’t smoke across the vast majority of places, including your room, public areas and even many outdoor spots.

However, smoking is normally allowed in cruise casinos. Keep this in mind whether you’re a smoker or a non-smoker. If you do smoke, it’s nice to have a place you can light up. If you don’t like it, then unfortunately the spot can smell smoky — especially in the evenings when things get busy.

One bright spot for non-smokers? On newer (and larger) ships, the trend seems to be toward having dedicated non-smoking areas where you can play without the smell.

Don’t Expect Great Payouts

do regent cruise ships have casinos

We don’t think anyone expects to have an advantage over the house when they step into any casino. But on cruise ships the payouts can make it less in your favor.

For instance, low-limits blackjack generally pays 6-to-5 instead of the customary 3-to-2 (higher limits will find the higher payouts). Craps games often have lower odds bets than what you see normally. Video poker machines will vary but it’s seemingly impossible to find the “9/6” machines that provide the least amount of house edge.

These payouts actually are in line with what you might find on land as the trend everywhere seems to be more in the house’s favor. Still, keep it in mind when you’re playing.

The Casino Is the Most Lively Late-Night Spot on the Cruise

Wondering where the party is on a cruise ship late at night? It’s likely the casino. No doubt that there’s plenty going on around the ship once the sun goes down. But after dinner and after the evening show, it seems that people flock to the casino to go try their luck.

In fact, it can be so busy that finding a machine is tough (depending on the ship). If you’re wondering where people hang out on the ship in the evening, however, this is it.

What to Know About the Unusual Games

do regent cruise ships have casinos

Walk in the ship’s casino and as mentioned, you’ll recognize lots that’s familiar. What you’ll also notice, however, is that there are a few unusual games. One is the coin-pusher machine, complete with folded cash on top of the coins to entice you to play. Then there are the skill cranes but instead of trying to get a stuffed animal, you’re trying to grab a stack of cash. And then there is the Keymaster game where you try to position a key in the slot to unlock the prize.

These games can seem like they are skill. If you position the drop claw just right, you’ll win, right? In truth, if they could be won with skill alone, they wouldn’t be in a casino. For instance, the skill crane can be adjusted to allow enough power to grab a prize only occasionally. The coin pusher machines usually have side slots (that are harder to see) where coins can go instead of over the front edge.

They are still fun to play, but know they aren’t entirely based on skill.

Casino Classes Are Available

Ever wanted to play a game but never knew how? It can be intimidating to learn some games on the fly, especially when there is money on the line. On a cruise, you don’t have to. Many ships offer beginner classes for games like blackjack and craps.

Look at the ship’s daily planner for times, but it’s normally about an hour before the table games open for the day. That means look for them in the mid-morning. These classes allow you to learn the game without risking money in a stress-free environment.

Bar Service Isn’t Free (But Drink Packages Work)

A staple of a typical casino is the staff offering drinks while you gamble. That’s one difference on a cruise. There, drinks aren’t free unless you’re playing enough to earn them as a perk. Instead, there may be waitstaff walking by taking drink orders, but you’ll be charged menu prices, just as if you had gotten a drink at the bar.

One good thing to know is that if you have a drink package, it will work in the casino just as it does anywhere else on the ship. In that way, you can get what you want to drink without having to pay extra.

Casinos Are Great for Watching Sports

If there is a game that you want to watch, most of the time it won’t be shown in your cabin. TV channels are pretty sparse in the room, and major sports stations like ESPN are rarely available.

However, the casino can be a great place to watch. Generally they have a bar with TV sets and offer channels that aren’t available elsewhere. So while you might not get the Sunday afternoon football games in your cabin, several can be showing at the bar in the casino. So you can sit, have a drink, and watch the game… or you can gamble while still keeping an eye on the score.

Want to Play for Cheaper? Look for Tournaments

Anyone who has gambled before knows that you don’t always get your money’s worth. It’s not unusual to put $20 in a machine and see it just quickly drain to zero.

If you want a little more play for your money, many cruise casinos offer tournaments for both slots and blackjack. You pay an entry fee and then hope to come out with the highest score to win prizes. Tournaments aren’t for everyone’s liking, but it is nice to be able to get some play in a casino for a set fee.

Yes, You Can Earn Free Cruises (And Other Perks)

Table games and slot machines on a cruise

One big draw about casino gambling is earning those perks. Go to Las Vegas and play enough, and you can get meals, show tickets, and even rooms comped. It’s not quite the same on cruise ships but you can get things like drinks and free cruises for your play.

For example, Carnival’s Players Club offers all sorts of perks for players with enough points in their program. This can include free or discounted cruises, complimentary cabin gifts, free drinks, wi-fi, an exclusive cocktail party, and even its highest-tier loyalty status.

That’s one reason why if you play, you want to be sure to keep your keycard inserted to track your play.

The Age Limit to Gamble Is 18 Years Old

If you’re under 21 and want to play on your cruise, there’s some good news. Unlike casinos in Las Vegas and many other places where you have to be 21 to play, cruise casinos allow you to place a bet as long as you’re 18 years old.

Perhaps surprisingly, however, if you want to have a drink while you play, then you have to be 21 years old.

Casino on Mariner?

Well, Regent ships are not large and therefore, neither are the casino's. By law (not sure what law), the casino's are closed when the ship is in port. Therefore, on port intensive cruises the casino's are closed until the ship is out of the port. On sea days they are open quite a bit of the time. I'll let someone else report on how the casino is since we tend to be too busy to spend time there:)

We just got off the Mariner, and Travelcat is right...it's small. But we spent many nights there, if only for a few rolls of the dice. The casino has slots on one side, a small (but fully stocked bar) in the middle, and then tables for poker, blackjack, roulette and craps. Great service from both bar and casino employees. It's worth a stop, if not regularly.

Is the poker table a real poker table or an electronic thing? Our last cruise on the mariner the poker table was a weird electronic thing that no one was ever interested in so it never had a single game going.

JMARINER

Is the poker table a real poker table .... Thanks!

I not a Casino person, but I have seen, on several cruises, several "bracelet" poker players.

Unlike the larger, mass-market cruise lines, Regent does not operate its own casinos. The casinos are franchised to third-party operators, much like the gift shops and the health spas. Be sure you understand the house rules before you sit down at the blackjack table, as they vary from what you might expect. Bring cash, as it is not really feasible to pre-arrange casino credit.

jhenry1

We love regent and I love the slot machines but the casino leaves a lot to be desired. In fact I am very disappointed in the casino but if the cruise is port intensive I am really too tired to stay up late gambling anyway.

Kandy from Texas

Poker video machines have the worst odds of any casino. Unlike Vegas, there is no competition. The shops have outrageous prices. Enjoy the shows and music and bar conversations.

Linda -- Like you I am also a casino rat and this was one of my biggest concerns the first time I sailed on Mariner (what was I supposed to do to fill my time between 10pm and 1am if not play in the casino? LOL)

The tables are actual tables, with dealers, quite friendly I might add...and they will switch games based on what you all want to play if there is a steady group. You will notice the same 20 or so people who play in the casino whenever it is open (that is what I mean by group) and we found that the Casino manager was willing to make one of the tables either Let It Ride or Black Jack or 3 Card Poker depending on what we all felt like playing.

As far as slot machines, they are OLD OLD OLD and there are only a couple of the newer electronic type that offer bonus games but none of them pay very much although the bonus games do come up quite often.

Video poker, as Nevile mentioned, has terrible odds but no worse than any other casino at sea and I did see Royal Flushes hit more than once on both of my Mariner cruises so it is possible!

I decided I'd answere my own question in case there was anyone else out there who cared. The only poker table is actually three card poker. The electronic Hold ' Em table that was completely unused on my last mariner cruise is gone. There are lots of black jack tables, roulette and craps. And many old slot and video poker machines.

DH and I love to gamble, but prefer poker. If the craps table ever really gets going we may jump in. The casino has been pretty empty any time we have checked it out.

Kevnzworld

The Regent ships used to have pokertek tables. Live play with an electronic dealer. One Mediterranean cruise in the summer a few years back this was really popular, always people waiting for a seat in the evenings.

Last years Mediterranean cruise I noticed that the table was gone and the casino was a ghost town. Maybe a few people playing blackjack.

I decided I'd answere my own question in case there was anyone else out there who cared. The only poker table is actually three card poker.   The casino has been pretty empty any time we have checked it out.

thank you for clarifying the poker table for us! we were floating in October and had no luck at the slots and I don't understand craps and neither it nor roulette were up anyway. there was only one blackjack table with any players and I turned to stare at the poker game. I thought it was unlike anything I had ever seen. what was the point?

being Regent, everyone was kind and explained what I was seeing so I sat down at the table with just two other players. I played for an hour and walked away up ten dollars! that is pretty amazing for entertainment.

the poker game is largely a no-brainer. absolutely no skill is involved. at least on blackjack, you need to know how to add.

the DH sidled up behind me and stared for awhile and decided to sit down and give it a go. second hand, he was dealt a royal flush. with a payout of 40-1, he won enough to subsidize our gaming the entire cruise. it's just luck ... or not. I sat next to a man who couldn't seem to get any decent cards for two nights.

btw. the Mariner casino is open to the Stars Lounge below and karaoke comes right up the staircase. on our cruise, the noise was hilariously pitiful. on the other hand, if a good song started, our table would join in the yodeling.

Regent cruisers don't seem to be attracted to the casino but it's there and the play is with real money.

Thanks for the replies - I LOVE 3 card poker!

Could you envision a more enticing vacation than a luxurious cruise? The prospect is undeniably captivating! A cruise vessel offers a plethora of enjoyment opportunities, with each ship brimming with diverse entertainment options, including games of chance.

All the skepticism fades away when you get the chance to have something more than fun. A cruise cash casino is where people win real cash and other nice bonuses! How to gamble on cruise ship casinos, and what makes it so special? Let’s find out!

Cruise Casino Entertainment

Gambling on cruise ships isn’t something new. It seems that such a tradition has existed since the first cruise ship started its journey. You might challenge the argument by pointing out that the Cruise Ship Competitiveness Act was only signed into law in 1991.

Indeed, the document meant the official presence of gambling facilities. But who said that guys didn’t just play poker or other table games? It was possible before the Act and the Act itself means that an entertainment activity gained huge popularity. So now, almost every major cruise line offers its clients to play games for real money. What’s more, some cruise ships even host gambling tournaments. But that’s for professionals. What to expect when you go on your first cruise?

Are Cruise Casinos Beginners Friendly?

Gambling rules don’t change. However, some people believe that casinos on fancy ships have enormous entry requirements. While it might be relevant to luxurious tours , the majority of lines with casinos don’t differ from the average facilities you would find in your city or town. The entry requirements are low, making them affordable to all participants.

Besides, you have the opportunity to play cruise ship slot machines. Their minimum bets are very low. You’ll be able to benefit from your favorite slots anytime you wish.

Cruise Ship Casinos

Casino Games Available on a Cruise

If you’re fond of some particular games, we don’t think an average cruise casino will limit your gambling opportunities. You win money at a casino by different means. The range of games is a rich mix. Such a mix is common for the majority of such facilities. Ones located on cruise sailings aren’t exceptions. Do not hesitate and try to play:

Increasing the Winning Odds

When you play in cruise casinos, you get much more than just fun. You place real money at risk, so the reward is equal. Similar to any other facility, the chance of winning here depends on luck. Pure luck isn’t the only thing you need to wager money. If you feel like you have enough experience and skills to participate with other cruisers in poker or other card games that require logic and thinking — get ready to play.

Keep in mind that increasing odds leads to higher risks. So, stay away from impulsive decisions while your winnings are growing up. Remember that your gambles need to be based on well-thought-out strategies. Let’s take a look at the differences in winning opportunities based on casino type. Whether you choose a cruise casino, an online casino, or a land-based casino, you need to weigh your options carefully.

Cruise Casinos

One thing you need to realize about cruise gambling is that before you set foot in the cruise ship casino, you should familiarize yourself with the casino games you can play, since cruise casinos, unlike online gambling platforms, might not always offer the same rich selection of variations of blackjack, poker, roulette, or slot machines. Also, cruise ship casinos often offer promotions, such as free chips, match bonuses, or player’s club benefits. Join the casino’s loyalty program to earn rewards and take advantage of these offers to boost your bankroll.

Online Casinos

This option offers you more benefits than any land-based or cruise casino. The best real money online casinos provide players with an extended list of welcome bonuses, free spins, unique game selections, and advanced software, as well as numerous depositing and withdrawal options.

Some perks, available online, are impossible to get in land-based or cruise facilities. For instance, online casinos usually require lower entry deposits. You can establish quite a friendly gambling budget for yourself and forget about the fear of losing too much if you, of course, play responsibly and only wager money that you are not afraid to lose. With online casinos, gambling is more of entertainment than risk.

Land-Based Casinos

Compared to cruise and online casinos, the popularity of land-based casinos is fading away. Nevertheless, some of them might be the best of both worlds. Land-based casinos might be more budget-friendly than luxurious cruise facilities. At the same time, their choice of games isn’t limited to only table and card games. Unlike in cruise casinos, you can choose games with a lower house edge. The reason for this is that the selection of games is simply wider. For instance, practice video poker.

Casino Promotions and Loyalty Programs

As you see, cruise casinos are much like ordinary casinos. What sets them apart is that they have more advanced loyalty programs. You earn different perks and gather gambling points. Later, these points will be used to level up your status in a casino club. Some cruise lines may accept these points as payment options for certain services on a cruise. To gather them, you need to get familiar with the conditions. Usually, they are based on hours played.

A Comprehensive Guide On Cruise Ship Casinos: What Makes them So Alluring? | 8

Casino Currency and Payment Methods on Cruise Ships

As a cruise client, you can use your cruise card as a payment method . Casino services are included. This makes it easier to arrange everything. Also, some lines make their cruise ship casino payouts in cash. This is often relevant for penny slots. These are special machines that require minimum bets.

Etiquette and Cruise Casino Rules

  • Respect the limits: If you see a notification about limitations on bets, stick to it. Don’t place too high or too low bets. That’s a disrespect to other players.
  • Be polite with dealers: It goes without saying, that dealers are equal participants in the game. Be polite to them and your competitors.
  • Leave tips: Place some bets on behalf of dealers and tip them with some winnings.
  • Follow the dress code: A cruise ship is a place where you can let your hair down. However, keeping up with the casino dress code is a sign of respect for the facility.

To sum it up, a cruise casino is a worthy thing to try on your vacation. Gambling will make your routine more entertaining. Besides, it’s not easy to get used to. If you have some gambling experience, cruise casinos won’t be new to you. They only increase your potential satisfaction. It becomes possible thanks to special perks and the availability of other cruise services. While enjoying your favorite games, keep in mind responsible gambling principles. Never neglect casino etiquette rules. With them, you will not only enjoy the game. You’ll make a good impression on other cruise participants!

Seven Seas Splendor

Debuted in September 2021, the 746-passenger, 548-crew member Seven Seas Splendor is the newest ship within the Regent fleet. Seven Seas Splendor – along with most of the line's other ships – takes opulence to the next level by equipping each suite with its own private balcony. Other standard in-room amenities include interactive flat-screen TVs, luxurious bath products, bathrobes and slippers, signature queen-size beds and dining tables for two. There are 10 suite categories available, ranging from the smallest Veranda (307 square feet) and Deluxe Veranda suites (308 to 361 square feet) to the largest Regent (4,443 square feet) and Master suites (1,895 to 2,108 square feet).

Guests have a wide array of things to do while on board. Spend your days relaxing at the spa, playing paddle tennis or bocce ball, working up a sweat on the jogging track or taking a dip in the ship's two whirlpools and two pools, one of which is an infinity-edge pool that stretches along the edge of the ship, providing swimmers with exceptional views of the ocean. At night, enjoy one of five shows at the onboard theater.

When it comes to food, Seven Seas Splendor offers eight eateries ranging from casual to fine dining. Enjoy your breakfast alfresco at La Veranda and grub down for lunch at the Pool Grill buffet. For something more formal, opt for a French-inspired meal at Chartreuse, Pan-Asian dishes at Pacific Rim or Compass Rose, the largest restaurant on the ship.

Seven Seas Splendor visits a variety of European and Mediterranean destinations, as well as ports across Europe, the Caribbean, Africa and South America.

Seven Seas Explorer

Regent Seven Seas Explorer debuted in 2016. It's one of the largest vessels in the fleet, welcoming up to 746 passengers. The ship makes service a top priority, with 548 crew members on board. According to past cruisers, the staff was friendly and attentive.

Travelers were even more impressed by the all-suite accommodations, which are some of the largest offered among ocean liners. All 373 suites include spacious balconies, marble bathrooms, walk-in closets, interactive flat-screen TVs and unlimited Wi-Fi.

Another high point: the cuisine. Explorer offers eight dining areas that range from the casual Pool Grill to Asian creations at Pacific Rim. As part of the 'Regent Experience,' all specialty dining is included in the cruise fare.

Outside the cabins, guests can spend their days participating in cooking demonstrations, lounging by the pool or relaxing in the library. At night, entertainment options include casino games, cocktail lounges and shows in the Constellation Theater. Complaints about this ship are few and far between, though some reviewers felt the entertainment could be more impressive.

The best perk, according to recent passengers? All shore excursions are included. Seven Seas Explorer sails to destinations in Alaska, Asia, Australia and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip: Pacific Rim is a favorite dining venue among cruisers, with its Asian-inspired cocktails and cuisine offering a selection of dishes from Thailand, Korea, China, Vietnam and Japan. Seven Seas Navigator

Carrying only 496 passengers, Seven Seas Navigator offers guests an intimate setting, with all-suite accommodations outfitted with marble bathrooms, private balconies and free Wi-Fi throughout the voyage.

Thanks to a major refurbishment in 2019 (the ship originally launched in 1999), the ship features updated staterooms and refreshed public spaces and restaurants. Passengers can choose from six dining venues, including a specialty steakhouse and the causal Pool Grill.

During days at sea, guests can unwind at the expansive pool deck, play card games or mingle with fellow shipmates at the Pool Bar. In the evenings, cruisers can sip cocktails at one of three onboard lounges or take in a live show.

Like other ships in the fleet, Seven Seas Navigator prides itself on providing a high-caliber service and maintains a nearly 1-to-1 passenger-to-crew ratio, with 365 crew members. Guests praise the "Regent Experience," which includes specialty dining and shore excursions in the cruise fare.

Seven Seas Navigator offers a variety of sailings throughout Miami , the Caribbean, South America, Australia, Europe and more.

Seven Seas Mariner

Similar to its sister ships,  Seven Seas Navigator  and  Seven Seas Voyager , the 696-passenger Seven Seas Mariner makes service a top priority with 459 crew members on board.

Refurbished in 2018 (and debuted in 2001), the Mariner features neutral decor and finishings throughout, a remodeled library in a new location and a revamped pool deck with an open layout and new tile and teak surfaces. The Serene Spa & Wellness center received a new design with light wood accents and pebble-stone tiles, while the fitness and aerobics center offers modern equipment. Onboard activities include theatrical productions, casino games and sipping cocktails in one of five lounge areas.

Across the ship, there are seven eateries in total. All are stylishly designed, including the Prime 7 steakhouse and the flagship Compass Rose restaurant. Chartreuse, a guest favorite, highlights modern French cuisine. During the day, guests can enjoy the expanded lunch offerings at the outdoor Pool Grill or snack at the informal Coffee Connection. As with all Regent Seven Seas ships, specialty dining and shore excursions are included in the cruise fare.

Best of all, the all-suite accommodations offer beds with plush leather headboards, cozy sitting areas and artwork. All cabins are outfitted with welcome bottles of Champagne, private balconies, walk-in closets and marble bathrooms.

Seven Seas Mariner sails through much of the world, including ports in the Caribbean, Canada, Africa, Asia, Australia and more.

Seven Seas Voyager

After undergoing a massive refurbishment in late 2016 (followed by some smaller updates in 2018), Seven Seas Voyager boasts refreshed decor throughout the ship. The ship features all-suite accommodations outfitted with flat-screen TVs, private balconies and marble bathrooms. The 698-passenger Seven Seas Voyager employs 455 crew members, ensuring an excellent crew-to-guest ratio and a high standard of service.

While onboard, passengers can lounge poolside or receive treatments at the Serene Spa & Wellness center. After working up an appetite, guests can dine at one of the ship’s seven venues, including the Prime 7 steakhouse and the French-inspired Chartreuse. As with all Regent Seven Seas ships, specialty dining is included in the cruise fare.

When nighttime rolls around, guests can try their luck at the casino, catch a stage production at the Constellation Theater or savor a nightcap at one of four lounges and bars.

Seven Seas Voyager sails to destinations like the Mediterranean, Africa, South America and more.

The best Alaska cruises for every type of traveler

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Even with a season that only runs from April through October, there are some 40 big ships and dozens of small ships cruising Alaska , making it one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world after the Caribbean and Europe. The best Alaska cruises range from off-the-beaten-path voyages on vessels carrying fewer than 100 passengers to weeklong jaunts through the Inside Passage aboard megaships that hold thousands.

The itinerary choices are numerous in Alaska. Some ships stick to tried-and-true ports, sailing through Southeast Alaska and into western Canada. Others wander deeper along the Alaska coastline to places such as the Kenai Peninsula, north to Nome and Barrow and even deep into the Bering Sea.

Some trips hit multiple national parks; others dive into Alaska culture, allowing guests to learn the stories told by totem poles or hear about “the big one” from a fisherman at a dive bar.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

It can be hard to figure out which ship will deliver your idea of a “bucket list” experience in The Last Frontier. A lot comes down to your travel style, preferences and budget. Some travelers demand luxury, while others don’t mind going less fancy if it means close encounters with bears and other creatures in the wilderness. Some look for romance, while others want to introduce the kids or grandkids to glaciers and eagles, gold panning and sled dogs.

The good news is there’s a ship in Alaska for you no matter your taste or style. Here’s a beginner’s guide to the best Alaska cruises to help you narrow down your choices.

Best for megaresort fans

Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean both sail some of their largest ships in Alaska. They are floating megaresorts, carrying thousands, and are big on amenities, glitz and a certain amount of glamor — think flashy casinos, Broadway shows, lavish spas. Dining and drinking venues number in the dozens, while amusement park features thrill the kids and adrenaline-seekers.

Norwegian Encore

On Norwegian Encore, you can race along a go-kart racetrack, compete in outdoor laser tag and zoom down slides at the water park while you traverse Alaska’s Inside Passage. The ship sails seven-night cruises from Seattle, visiting Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan in Alaska, as well as Victoria, British Columbia, and Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve .

Related: A beginner’s guide to picking a cruise line

Ovation of the Seas

On Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class ships, you can order a drink from a robotic bartender, try simulated skydiving or surfing experiences and take a ride in a glass capsule that travels high above your ship on a mechanical arm — a weird and wonderful way to see the Alaska scenery.

Ovation of the Seas sails round-trip from Seattle on seven-night cruises, but the exact itinerary varies by week. The ship cruises Endicott Arm for scenic views of Dawes Glacier and typically visits three Alaska ports and Victoria.

Best for land and sea adventures

You’ve traveled far to get to Alaska, and it would be a shame to miss inland sights such as Denali National Park and Preserve and the sight of Denali, North America’s largest peak — so big it’s often shrouded in clouds caused by its own weather system.

Market leaders Holland America Line and Princess Cruises both send a half-dozen ships to Alaska each year, and they have 75 and 55 years in the market, respectively.

They top the list in terms of cruises, as well as cruise tours, which combine time sailing with overnight stays on land. The companies operate their own lodges, rail cars and motorcoaches for exploration of Alaska’s interior and beyond. Many of the ships have permission to sail in Glacier Bay.

Related: The coolest things to do on an Alaska cruise

Choose from 10- to 17-night land tours that combine a standard weeklong cruise (sometimes half a cruise) with time spent exploring Alaska’s interior by bus, train or even plane.

Holland America will base six ships in Alaska in 2024, with tour offerings to Denali, Fairbanks and Anchorage.

However, it also offers nine- to 14-night cruise tours on Koningsdam that head into the Canadian Yukon, following the route of the Klondike Gold Rush from Alaska to northwestern Canada. Disembark your cruise ship in Skagway, then travel to Whitehorse and Dawson City in the Yukon before continuing on to Fairbanks (the gateway to Arctic Alaska), Denali National Park and Anchorage.

Sapphire Princess

Princess Cruises offers a cruise tour where you visit four national parks: Glacier Bay, Denali, the Kenai Fjords and America’s largest national park, Wrangell-St. Elias. The 15- and 17-night trips combine a seven-night cruise on Sapphire Princess from Vancouver to Whittier, Alaska, with another week or more on land, ending in Fairbanks or Anchorage.

Best for travelers on a budget

Older ships in Norwegian and Royal Caribbean’s fleets tend to offer more reduced prices than you’ll find on the lines’ larger and newer ships, based on the fact the older ships don’t have as many bells and whistles.

Since they have so many ships in the market, Holland America Line and Princess Cruises also tend to offer frequent sales — especially on their older tonnage. These ships have a loyal following and tend to have fewer families on board, which some couples find particularly appealing.

Related: Best time to cruise Alaska

If you’re looking for other surefire ways to save, consider sailings in the area’s shoulder season. You’ll find better deals from April to early June and in September than you will in the height of summer.

Also, in Alaska, balcony cabins are highly desirable, with everyone seeking views of the wilderness, snow-capped peaks and glaciers. As those reserves get low, the prices tend to get higher. Bargain seekers should either book early for these accommodations or choose inside, outside or guarantee cabins (where you don’t pick your room location) to save more.

Radiance of the Seas

Royal Caribbean’s 20-year-old ship Radiance of the Seas mainly sails weeklong, one-way cruises between Vancouver and Seward, Alaska, with prices below $100 per person, per night, for inside and outside cabins on many departures.

However, its early-season May 2024 sailing from Seward to Vancouver is the cheapest Royal Caribbean Alaska cruise of the season. It starts at $368 per person for an inside cabin.

Grand Princess and Sapphire Princess

Princess Cruises has so many ships based in Alaska that you’re bound to find deals, especially on shoulder-season cruises. Both Grand and Sapphire Princess offer weeklong Alaska cruises in May 2024 starting from $548 per person for inside cabins. The itinerary starts in Vancouver and ends in Whittier, Alaska, with calls in Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway and scenic cruising in Glacier Bay and College Fjord.

Best for off-the-beaten-path travel

Want to see and deeply experience coastal Alaska, and don’t mind a mellower environment where lectures and impromptu guitar singalongs replace casinos and show productions? Consider lines such as UnCruise Adventures , Lindblad Expeditions and Alaskan Dream Cruises, all with ships that carry fewer than 100 passengers (and in the case of Alaskan Dream, even under 20 passengers).

On these small ships, captains have the flexibility to alter itineraries and linger if the naturalist onboard spots a pod of whales or bears digging for clams on a beach.

Small ships can go places bigger ships can’t, so itineraries stretch far beyond the traditional ports. You’ll visit more remote places such as Petersburg, a fishing town with strong Norwegian roots, and Wrangell, one of Alaska’s oldest communities. Some itineraries are conducted entirely in the wild, with no port calls at all.

UnCruise Adventures

UnCruise Adventures explores Southeast Alaska on seven-, 12- and 14-night itineraries. A day might start with a morning birding expedition, continue with a kayaking adventure and end with an evening campfire ashore. You might visit LeConte and Baird Glaciers (where the big ships don’t go), plus UnCruise has the only permits for hiking and biking adventures on Chichagof Island.

Lindblad Expeditions

Lindblad Expeditions frequents off-the-beaten-path destinations in both Alaska and British Columbia, with itineraries ranging from six to 15 nights.

Guests might explore the small fishing town of Petersburg or discover native petroglyphs on the beaches of Wrangell Island in Alaska, or search for grizzly bears in Canada’s Great Bear Rainforest. Lindblad has special permits to bring passengers into the wilderness of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve and the Tongass National Forest, beyond what the big ships can offer.

Alaskan Dream Cruises

Alaskan-owned Alaskan Dream Cruises’ ships carry 12 to 76 passengers to remote Native villages that rarely see visitors, with plenty of time for wildlife viewing far from the cruise ship crowds. Itineraries range from five to nine nights, from departure ports such as Sitka, Ketchikan and Juneau.

Best for families

If you’re traveling with your kids or grandkids in Alaska and want an activity- and entertainment-packed experience, target the newest and biggest ships of Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Carnival and especially Disney Cruise Line. All have excellent camp-like activity programs for kids, plus eye-popping amusement attractions.

Disney Wonder

On Disney ships, Goofy might make an appearance as you admire soaring eagles, blue icebergs and glaciers. The extensive children’s program, entertainment and such activities as water slides and play areas deliver what you would expect from the purveyor of dreams. Bonus: Cabins are designed with families in mind and include split bathrooms (one with a toilet and sink, the other with a shower/tub combo and sink).

Discovery Princess

While lacking in whiz-bang attractions, Princess Cruises is another good choice, both for its children’s and teens program, complete with spacious facilities, and for such programming as bringing sled dogs on board, which is a hit with young passengers. The line’s newest ship, Discovery Princess, sails round trip from Seattle, a convenient U.S. home port for families to fly or drive to.

Carnival Spirit

Water slides, a partnership with Dr. Seuss and three hangouts for kids and teens make Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Spirit a great bet for families in Alaska.

The ship’s huge array of included quick eats — pizza, tacos, Guy Fieri’s burgers and unlimited soft serve ice cream — and casual atmosphere take the stress out of dining with the family. The ship sails round trip from Seattle on seven-night itineraries that call in Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan and Victoria, with scenic cruising in Tracy Arm Fjord.

Best for luxury lovers

If you envision sipping Champagne as you watch a glacier thunderously calve into the sea, consider booking one of the all-inclusive luxury cruise lines in Alaska: Seabourn , Regent Seven Seas Cruises or Silversea .

All these lines include ships that are experts at delivering gourmet cuisine and the other finer things in life in intimate, cushy floating environments. Additionally, all the lines are big on featuring lectures by experts, which provides passengers with a deeper insight into Alaska.

Itineraries tend to include the popular ports and beyond. You might, for instance, visit Wrangell and Prince Rupert, a port city in Canada, and linger in places such as the Misty Fjords and Prince William Sound. Seven- to 14-night sailings embark from ports such as Vancouver, Seward and Juneau.

Seven Seas Explorer

Regent’s 750-passenger Seven Seas Explorer is an all-suite ship offering guests in Alaska multiple gourmet onboard restaurants, all-inclusive beverages, free airfare and included gratuities. Many shore excursions are complimentary. Enjoy little luxuries, like an afternoon in the thermal suite of the two-story spa-and-fitness center, or really splurge out by booking the Regent Suite, the most lavish suite you’ll find at sea.

Seabourn Odyssey

The 450-passenger Seabourn Odyssey boasts an onboard expedition team and does a posh version of expedition cruising in Alaska, using inflatable Zodiac craft and kayaks.

Seabourn calls its program Ventures by Seabourn. Experts onboard these sailings include naturalists, biologists and other scientists who are members of the expedition team. Once guests finish communing with nature, they can indulge in complimentary Champagne and caviar on board or relish a meal created by famed chef, Thomas Keller.

Best for solo travelers

Solo travelers don’t always have to pay double to cruise Alaska on their own. Several ships feature cabins designed and priced for one. Single cruisers should also note that luxury lines Silversea and Seabourn, while not cheap, do a great job of taking care of single cruisers, hosting them at dinner and providing easy opportunities to meet and mingle with other travelers.

Norwegian Bliss

The ships in Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway and Getaway classes all have cozy studio cabins designed and priced for one person. Additionally, they’re located in a complex where a private lounge encourages mingling. Norwegian Bliss offers 82 solo rooms on its round-trip Seattle cruises that visit Dawes Glacier, Sitka and Icy Strait Point.

Quantum of the Seas

Royal Caribbean’s studio staterooms, on its Quantum-class ships in Alaska, give solo travelers the benefits of both decent space and balconies.

On Quantum of the Seas, choose a 101-square-foot inside cabin or a 119-square-foot ocean-view room with a 55-square-foot balcony. Either way, you get a full-size bed and plenty of space for one person. The ship sails a similar weeklong itinerary to sister ship Ovation of the Seas, round-trip from Seattle with scenic sailing along Endicott Arm.

Holland America offers ocean-view accommodations for one in Alaska only on Koningsdam. Measuring 127 to 172 square feet, these rooms come with a full-size bed and a picture window.

Koningsdam sails round trip from Vancouver to Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan, with scenic cruising in Tracy Arm and Glacier Bay. Its cruises can be combined into nine- to 14-night cruise tours to the Yukon and Denali.

USA TODAY 10Best

10 best cruise lines for every type of traveler, from adventurers to families

Danielle Bauter

May 6, 2024 // By Danielle Bauter

By Danielle Bauter May 6, 2024

Find your people on Carnival Cruise Line, one of the best for social butterflies

It's time to cast off your worries and set sail toward unforgettable experiences, charting a course for your dream vacation. But not everyone craves the same itinerary or type of cruise — some souls yearn for heart-pounding adventure, while others seek relaxation on idyllic beaches.

The good news? There's a perfect cruise vacation waiting for every type of traveler. From luxurious foodie adventures to social escapades and wellness wonders, we'll help you find the best cruises to indulge your desires. So, grab your swimsuit (or maybe your hiking boots), pack your sense of adventure, and get ready to plan your next cruise vacation.

Best cruise for the adventurer: Adventure Canada

Explore Devon Island in Nunavut during an Adventure Canada cruise

If adrenaline-fueled is how you like to cruise, then Adventure Canada is the perfect conduit. It's been a USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice favorite for Best Adventure Cruise Line for many years, and most recently it landed on the list for Best Cruise Lines for Families .

Advertisement Advertisement

Offering small-ship expedition cruises to remote areas like Greenland, Antarctica, the Canadian Arctic, and Iceland, Adventure Canada prioritizes exploration and education over typical cruise activities. Their itineraries get you off the ship and into the heart of the action, with zodiac landings, hikes, and wildlife viewing opportunities.

Itineraries that travel to Greenland and Nunavut, Canada, literally take you off the map, visiting uninhabited archipelagos like Devon Island or towns like Ilulissat, Greenland, where you could potentially spot polar bears, narwhals, and beluga whales.

Watch out for calving icebergs, though — the possibility of a tidal wave capsizing your zodiac after ice plummets into the ocean is enough to get your blood pumping.

Best cruise for the wine enthusiast: AmaWaterways

Sample wine-themed excursions with AmaWaterways

Board a dedicated "Celebration of Wine" on Best River Cruise Line winner AmaWaterways and savor itineraries that sail through famous European wine regions like France's Bourdeaux, Germany's Rhine Valley, or Portugal's Douro Valley.

The cruise becomes part of the wine experience and often features partnerships with North American wineries that bring knowledgeable wine hosts on board to lead informative tastings and discussions.

The Rhine River cruise explores towns like Rüdesheim, a German winemaking town lined with tasting rooms and vineyards. In France, Riquewihr is one of the highlights of the Alsace Wine Route. You'll then venture on to charming Strasbourg, which claims to be home to the oldest wine on Earth. Stroll through historic vineyards and choose from a carefully selected wine list that showcases local wines from the regions you explore.

Best cruise for the hopeless romantic: Windstar Cruises

Find romance on Windstar Cruises' intimate yacht cruises

Imagine sailing around the rivieras of the Mediterranean, the crystal blue water sparkling under golden rays. The gentle sway of the vessel and the vastness of the ocean set a naturally romantic tone, especially when the sails rise over the setting sun. Unlike mega-ships with thousands of passengers, Windstar keeps things intimate.

Windstar Cruises travels to dreamy destinations like Tahiti and the French Riviera with three classic sailing yachts and three all-suite motor yachts. (Its Wind Spirit vessel took the top spot for Best Adults Only Cruise this year.) The cruise line also partnered with the James Beard Foundation to offer tantalizing meals on board. Windstar caters to romance with packages and add-on options, inviting you to enjoy dreamy spots like Bora Bora with an intimate dinner under the stars or a champagne breakfast in bed.

Best cruise for the wellness warrior: Oceania Cruises

Relax with a spa treatment at Oceania's Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center

Embrace the zen: Oceania Cruises offers a comprehensive wellness experience that caters to your physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. The state-of-the-art Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center offers a wide range of treatments designed to promote relaxation and rejuvenation.

Ranking for Best Boutique Cruise Line , Oceania is also known for its "finest cuisine at sea" philosophy, which translates to delicious and healthy cuisine (including extensive plant-based menus) alongside its more indulgent offerings.

Aquamar's Wellness Discovery Tours are shore excursions designed to complement your onboard wellness journey. For example, you can meditate with a monk in Thailand or learn to harness the power of spiritual drumming in Australia. Oceania travels across the globe on small, luxurious ships — from Africa to the Amazon, the Baltic to the South Pacific.

Best cruise for the culture vulture: Viking

Soak up some culture with Viking's classical performances

Designed for experienced travelers ages 55 and older who are interested in topics like science, history, and gastronomy, Viking has carved a niche for itself as a leader in cultural enrichment cruises. It steers away from the typical focus on onboard activities and entertainment. Instead, meticulously crafted itineraries immerse you in the history and culture of the places you visit.

Expect longer stays in ports, allowing you to explore destinations in greater depth. A Viking Resident Historian accompanies each ocean voyage, leading roundtable discussions and lectures about a specific topic. Along with classical musicians on board, Viking invites local musicians and ensembles for special performances. With an array of itineraries on their river, ocean, and expedition cruises, Viking travels to Europe, Africa and the Middle East, Asia, and North America.

It's no wonder Viking's extensive fleet of vessels has consistently ranked as reader-voted favorites for Best Boutique Cruise Line , Best Cruise Line for Solo Travelers , and Best Ocean Cruise Line .

Best cruise for the social butterfly: Carnival Cruise Line

Party with fellow social butterflies on Carnival Breeze

Party lovers, unite! Carnival Cruise Line has you covered if you're constantly seeking social stimulation. The cruise line thrives on creating a fun and lively atmosphere on all of its ships. Carnival Vista, Carnival Breeze, and Carnival Celebration took the top three spots for Best Cruise Ship for Entertainment , making them great picks for social butterflies. Known for its energetic onboard entertainment that ranges from stage shows and dance productions to poolside games and deck parties, Carnival Cruise Line offers many opportunities to mingle with other passengers.

Download Carnival's HUB app to reserve select shows, specialty dining, and spa services. With an average of about 3,000 guests on board each ship, you're sure to find other like-minded individuals who want to check out the casino or comedy club, play an intense bingo game, or dance the night away at the nightclub. Destinations include the Caribbean, Europe, Canada, and Hawaii.

Best cruise for the solo traveler: Norwegian Cruise Line

Sail into the sunset with Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line goes above and beyond to cater to solo cruisers, from dedicated living quarters and social spaces to organized activities. The studio staterooms are designed specifically for solo travelers; solo-occupancy options for balcony and ocean view staterooms provide more personal space and a touch of luxury.

Whether you choose to visit destinations like Hawaii, South America, or the Greek Isles, you'll do so in style on this USA TODAY Readers' Choice Award winner for Best Cruise Line for Solo Travelers .

You'll also have exclusive access to the Studio Lounge, a social hub where you can relax, meet other solo cruisers, and enjoy complimentary drinks and snacks throughout the day. Norwegian Cruise Line organizes social events specifically for solo travelers, ranging from casual meet-and-greets to group shore excursions, providing opportunities to connect with others and avoid feeling isolated. And if you crave solitude, you can find that too.

Best cruise for the LGBTQ jet-setter: Celebrity Cruises

Celebrate Pride in style every day of the year with Celebrity Cruises

"Love is love" perfectly describes the mantra of Celebrity Cruises , which goes beyond mere tolerance by actively celebrating diversity and creating an environment for LGBTQ travelers to relax and have fun. The cruise line fosters a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for all passengers, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Board one of the 16 ships that travel to hundreds of ports worldwide and embark on group excursions or private journeys.

Celebrity pulls out all the stops in June with Pride Month celebrations, including theme parties and dazzling entertainment. (Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Beyond is a repeat winner for Best Cruise Ship for Entertainment .)

Many Celebrity cruises host LGBTQ welcome parties on the first night, allowing you to meet fellow travelers, mingle with crew members, and set the tone for your voyage. They also have become a champion for marriage equality at sea, offering legal same-sex wedding ceremonies on board their ships.

Best cruise for the foodie: Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Indulge your foodie fantasies on Regent Seven Seas' culinary cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises isn't just a cruise line; it's a culinary odyssey for discerning palates. The brand boasts an impressive array of specialty restaurants onboard, from French bistros to sizzling steakhouses and Asian fusion experiences, all with impeccable service and world-class cuisine. USA TODAY 10Best readers voted Seven Sea Explorer among the top 10 for Best Cruise Ship for Dining (twice!).

The Compass Rose, Regent's main dining room on all ships, transforms into an extension of the specialty restaurants, ideal for those who crave variety and exquisite flavors.

Regent also offers curated shore excursions designed for food enthusiasts, such as truffle hunting in Italy or cheesemaking tours in France, elevating your gastronomic exploration like never before. Gastronomes also can delve deeper with hands-on cooking classes led by culinary experts. Learn the secrets of French pastry or master the art of sushi making. These interactive sessions elevate your appreciation for food and empower you to recreate these dishes at home.
