Money-Saving Tips for Your Next Getaway

While these destinations offer an affordable warm weather getaway, there are other ways to save money. Traveling to warm destinations in the winter can be both enjoyable and budget-friendly with these money-saving tips:

  • Flexible travel dates: Consider traveling during the shoulder season—just before or after the peak holiday season, like January. Prices for accommodations and flights are often lower during these times.
  • Book in advance: Plan your trip well in advance to secure lower prices on flights, hotels, and activities.
  • Travel on weekdays: Flights and accommodations are generally cheaper on weekdays compared to weekends. In fact, travelers flying midweek can save around $90 for domestic flights.
  • Pack light: If you’re flying, traveling with only carry-on luggage can save on checked baggage fees and time at the airport.
  • Look for package deals: Some travel agencies offer package deals that include flights, accommodations, and sometimes activities at a discounted rate.
  • Cook your meals: If your accommodation has a kitchen, try cooking some meals to save on dining expenses. You can also pack snacks for day trips.
  • Travel with a group: If you’re traveling with family or friends, you can split the cost of accommodations, transportation, and other expenses.
  • Find local activities: Look for free or low-cost local activities, like hiking, beaches, parks, and visiting museums on discounted admission days.
  • Take advantage of the off-season: Visit popular attractions and destinations during their off-season to get the best deals.
  • Do your research: Read travel blogs, check for local deals, ask locals for their insights, and plan your itinerary to make the most of your trip without overspending.

What To Expect In This Article

I have included 21 of the best affordable warm winter vacations within easy reach of the United States. They are only a few hours flight from the continental USA although they could be closer or a little farther depending on whether you are located closer to the east or west coast.

To help you determine approximate travel times, I set out the flight times from five key hubs – New York , Chicago, Houston, Miami and Los Angeles.

The best free or inexpensive things to do are described as well as reasonably priced restaurants or areas where you can find great low priced food.

Budget friendly transportation options from the airport and affordable accommodation choices are also suggested.

Finally, the expected weather is set out so you know how best to pack for both day and night (other than bringing all of your favorite bathing suits, of course)!

Flight paths are constantly changing so what might exist today as I write this article might be completely different tomorrow. That means flights that are currently listed below as direct could change and become a flight with a layover, or vice versus.

Accordingly, the flight times below are merely supplied as a general overview to give you an idea of approximate travel times from where you live. Once you think you have settled on a holiday destination, you should immediately check on flight paths and ticket prices to see whether the travel time and cost still works for you.

Beyond that, the day you choose to fly is very important. For example, in many cases below, there was a direct flight on a Saturday, but not mid-week. So, if a getaway location is of particular interest, play with different departure and arrival days to see the different cost and flight paths.

Warm Tropical Destinations Close To USA with Long Travel Times

Generally, tropical winter holidays that are harder or take longer to reach from America will be more budget-friendly than other vacations where everyone can reach it with a quick direct flight and a short transfer from the airport.

Accordingly, if you have the time and the patience, and you really need a low cost winter getaway, then focus on those escapes that take longer and are more difficult to access.

If You Are Located Near The West Coast Of USA

There are fewer tropical winter destinations near the continental USA from the west coast that are easily accessible with a short flight. There are some in Mexico and Central America, but when the destinations are off the east coast, then flight times become much longer than elsewhere in the USA.

In this case, consider one of the Hawaiian Islands for a tropical island escape. Flights are direct and are only 5h 30m from Los Angeles.

Alternatively, stay in the southern United States where you can find many amazing reasonably priced warm winter destinations.

Chris says, “For affordable but recommendable resorts, check out Sunscape Puerto Plata or Iberostar Costa Dorada .

In case you prefer an inexpensive guesthouse or hotel, have a look at Cabarete’s Surfbreak B&B (approx. 45 minutes from Puerto Plata) or the unique Tubagua Eco-Lodge with amazing views just south of Puerto Plata.”

If you don’t have a lot of time to book your own holiday, then an all-inclusive resort is a great answer. However, all-inclusive resorts tend to be a more expensive option than booking your own lodge and choosing your own restaurants and activities. best economical tropical holidays in winter easily accessble from USA

Antigua, Guatemala

Antigua, Guatemala was at one time the colonial Spanish capital of Central America. Today, the small city’s colonial Spanish architecture has made it a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a low-cost warm city winter destination near the US. You can easily spend several days or weeks in Antigua, or make it part of a Guatemala itinerary .

Most of Antigua can be explored on foot, and there’s plenty of free activities that you can take advantage of. Spend an afternoon in Parque Central. This is the center of the city, and it’s always bustling with activity. Head there for people watching and to browse the vendors selling trinkets around the park.

Be sure to head to the Santa Catalina Arch to admire its architecture and take photos. This tall, yellow arch is one of the recognizable landmarks in Antigua. It was built in the 17th century, originally connecting the Santa Catalina convent to a school.

Hiking up to Cerro de la Cruz is a free activity that delivers great views of the region. At this viewpoint you’ll see the large cross which was built in devotion to the city’s patron saint. On a clear day, you’ll have views of all of the city and volcanoes in the distance.

You can find cheap eats in Mercado Central Antigua. Shop for fruits and produce, and stop by vendors to try Guatemalan street food for a very reasonable price.

To reach Antigua, fly into La Aurora International Airport, which serves Guatemala City. From the airport, you will need to take a shuttle into the city to the main bus terminal. There you can catch a “chicken bus” to Antigua, for just a few US dollars. The ride takes about 2 hours.

Flight Times To Guatemala City

From Chicago: 6h 40m (including one layover)

From Miami: 2 h 45m

From Houston: 2h 50m

From Los Angeles: 4h 50m

During winter, the weather in Antigua is mild and warm without being too hot. Daily high temperatures are around 73°F (23°C), and rarely fall below 53°F (12°C) in the evening. The skies may at times be overcast, but rain is unlikely.

Erin says, “The most affordable accommodation in Antigua will be hostels. Somos is highly rated and well located, and they offer 4-person dorms. For an affordable private room, check into Hotel Las Camelias Inn. “

We spent 11 days exploring Guatemala in winter. We traveled to Antigua, Lake Atitlan, Chichicastenago Market, Lake Peten, and Tikal. I have written multiple articles about each part of our trip and also offer a free downloadable planning Guide to help you craft your own trip. For more information, please click here .

best moderately priced warm winter escapes next to America

Playa Del Carmen, Mexico

Playa del Carmen is a coastal beach town located on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The area is famous for its white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant nightlife, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking reasonably priced warm winter vacations near the USA.

One of the best free things to do in Playa del Carmen is to explore its stunning beaches. The town boasts several complimentary public beaches, including Playa Mamitas and Playa Tukan, where visitors can enjoy sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling.

In addition to the beaches, visitors can also take a stroll through the charming town center, filled with boutique shops, street vendors, and restaurants.

Another great free activity is visiting the nearby ruins of Tulum, which is located just a short distance from Playa del Carmen.

Playa del Carmen hosts several annual events and festivals, such as the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival, the BPM Festival, and the Carnaval de Playa del Carmen. These events attract music lovers and partygoers from around the world, making it a great time to visit the town and experience its lively atmosphere.

When it comes to food, Playa del Carmen offers a variety of inexpensive restaurants and markets, including La Floresta Market and El Fogon Taqueria. These places offer delicious Mexican cuisine at affordable prices, giving travelers the chance to enjoy local food without having to spend a fortune.

To reach Playa del Carmen, visitors can fly into Cancun International Airport, which is about 40 minutes away. Travelers can rent a car, take a bus or taxi to reach the town.

In winter, average high temperatures are around 83°F, rarely dipping below 67 °F in the evening. Expect a few days of rain each winter month.

Victoria says, “For affordable accommodation, Playa del Carmen offers several options, including hostels, hotels, and camping grounds.

Hostels such as Hostel 3B and Mama’s Home provide comfortable and affordable lodging options for travelers on a budget.

Camping is also an option, with several campsites located outside of the town center.”

best cheap caribbean island escapes in winter from usa

St. Johns, US Virgin Islands

St. John is the smallest of the US Virgin Islands found in the Caribbean Sea to the east of Puerto Rico.  The island is 19 square miles and has fewer than 5000 residents. The larger USVI islands of St. Thomas is located just to the west and St. Croix is located to the south. It is one of the best places to visit near the continental USA for moderately priced tropical winter getaways.

The Virgin Islands National Park covers 60% of the island and is free to visitors. Once arriving at Cruz Bay, follow the path from the ferry dock northeast to Dock Center Road to get to the Visitor’s Center for the Park. Behind the Visitor’s Center is a staircase leading to the start of the Lind Point Hiking Trail. The hiking trail has an upper and a lower trail that are marked with signs.

Along with experiencing the local wildlife and lush tropical plants along the Lind Point hiking trail, it also connects to the various beaches on the north side of the island.

The first beach on the lower trail is Solomon Beach and next is Honeymoon Beach. Honeymoon Beach has drinks and snacks for sale.

The next beach on the hike is Trunk Bay and then further is Cinnamon Bay and Cinnamon Beach.  Swimming, sunbathing, and snorkeling can be done from all of the beaches.

There are many other amazing hikes, with varying degrees of difficulty and duration, within the Virgin Islands National Park.

Cinnamon Bay Trail takes one past the Cinnamon Bay Plantation. Established in 1717, it became one of the most successful sugar plantations on the island. It also grew bay rum trees that were used to make St. John Bay Rum Cologne.

For a longer and more challenging hike, the Reef Bay Trail covers more sugar plantation ruins as well as ancient rock carvings from the Taino people, who lived on the island from 1200-1500 AD.

Coral Bay offers a less touristy and less crowded way to enjoy St. John.

The most direct way to get to St. John is to fly to St. Thomas. After landing at Cyril E. King International Airport in Charlotte Amalie, travelers need to get to the Red Hook Ferry Dock to board the boat to St. John.

The VITRAN outbound bus routes from the airport to the Red Hook Ferry Dock take approximately an hour, not including changing buses at the Schneider Hospital. At Red Hook Ferry Dock, the ferries depart each hour to St. John. The trip takes about 20 minutes and costs $6.00 USD one way.

Coral Bay is also reached by an approximately 30 minutes commute on the VITRAN bus from the Ferry Dock. The bus stop for Coral Bay is known as the Triangle.

Audra says, “Cinnamon Bay offers camping sites and open ecotents for rent. Accommodations can be rented online 11 months in advance and have a 2 night minimum. There is a 7 night minimum during Christmas and New Year’s week as well as President’s week in February.

As for Coral Bay , there are several cottages for rent along Coral Bay, as well as a few grocery stores.  “

best cheap caribbean island escape in winter near USA

Curaçao is a Dutch-owned island in the Caribbean Sea. Its’ European influence and dry climate make it a truly unique Caribbean destination that offers cheap tropical beach escapes in winter.

There are 38 picture-perfect beaches to explore on this island. Most of them are free to enter, with the exception of a few that may charge around $5 USD for entry.

Swimming with sea turtles sounds like a gimmick you would overpay for at a Mexican resort, but in Curaçao, this is something you can do for free.

Playa Piskado is a beach where fishermen throw their leftover bait or unwanted catches into the water. This attracts turtles who enjoy the easy snack. These sea turtles are used to being around people, so grab your snorkel and swim along with them in the clear, shallow waters.

For even more natural interactions with wildlife, there are a few spots on the island that are home to flocks of flamingos. In fact, you can simply type “flamingos” into Google Maps and it will lead you to the salt flats of Jan Kok, where you can see dozens, if not hundreds, of the majestic pink birds.

For cheap and delicious food, I recommend the restaurants along Playa Zakitó. This is where you can enjoy the freshest seafood caught by local fishermen. The area is easy to access just outside the city center, but far enough away to avoid the tourist prices.

Flights arrive into Curaçao International Airport. Once you fly in you can rent a car, hop in a taxi, or ride the $1 bus for 20 minutes to the capital city of Willemstad.

Flight Times To Curacao

From New York: 4h 30m

The weather just might be Curaçao’s best asset, with average high temperatures around 85°F during winter. The island is situated outside of the Caribbean’s “Hurricane Alley” and has an arid, desert-like climate. Rain is a lot less likely to ruin your beach day here.

Steven says, “I find that Airbnb is great value on the island, but there are plenty of inexpensive accommodation options in Willemstad as well.”

best economical tropical vacation destination in winter off the coast of the USA

Caye Caulker, Belize

Located off the coast of Belize City, Caye Caulker attracts a younger crowd who are looking for low-priced warm winter vacations near the USA.

Only five miles long, there are no cars on the island. The mode of transportation is by bike or golf cart. The island’s motto is “Go slow,” and you will see it everywhere. You won’t find vendors selling tours or pushy salespeople.

Caye Caulker isn’t known for its beaches, as seaweed surrounds most of the island. To enjoy the tropical waters, take an inexpensive snorkel tour to  Shark Ray Alley.  Located offshore, you’ll snorkel or stand in shallow waters, shared by friendly stingrays and more timid nurse sharks.

In 1961, Hurricane Hattie divided Caye Caulker into two islands. “The Split,” the body of water between them, provides an ideal place to snorkel for free. You’ll also find restaurants and the famous Lazy Lizard Bar. It’s a perfect place to get a drink, listen to music, and enjoy the ocean views.

Iguana Hotel built a seahorse sanctuary on the island’s west side next to its resort. You can access a jetty for free, and you might spot seahorses in the water beneath you.

Surrounded by the ocean, Caye Caulker’s restaurants provide the most fantastic seafood at low prices. Alternatively, fishermen sell their fresh catch daily, so you can purchase inexpensive seafood. Take it to a restaurant, where they will cook it for you, or some hotels have guest kitchens.

You can reach the island by ferry or water taxi from Belize City. The journey takes 45 minutes. Tropic Air also provides 15-minute flights from Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport in Belize City, although you’ll pay a premium to access the small island by air.

Karen says, “The colorful Rainbow Hotel provides inexpensive accommodation, with kitchens or kitchenettes. Across the street, their restaurant serves the freshest food, with serene ocean views.”

Actun Tunichil Muknal is one of the most extraordinary experiences that I have every had. It is a 5.3 km cave system near San Ignacio, almost in the centre of Belize. It contains some of the most well-preserved examples of pre-classical Mayan culture (around 700 – 900 AD), including skeletal remains of human sacrifices. It is a less than 2 hour drive from Belize City and well worth setting aside a day to experience. For more information, please see Actun Tunichil Muknal: Crucial Tips For An Amazing Adventure .

best budget-friendly warm winter destination next to USA

La Paz, Mexico

Nestled in a large bay overlooking the Sea of Cortez, La Paz is a laid-back town and a popular competitively priced winter destination. Lying on the east coast of Mexico’s subtropical Baja California Sur peninsula (of which it is the capital), La Paz is blessed with warm weather, little rain and beautiful beaches.

Visiting the beach is one of the best free things to do in the area, with several white-sand bays, including El Saltito, La Ventana and  Balandra Beach , which is heralded as Mexico’s most beautiful beach.

Cycling along La Paz’s Malecón (oceanfront boulevard promenade) provides beautiful views, while those who prefer to stroll can enjoy marine-themed sculptures which have been made by local artists.

The city’s old town centre houses the charming Nuestra Señora de La Paz Cathedral, which is free to visit, as well as the Museum of Art and Museum of Anthropology.

Winter is the perfect time to visit La Paz for marine wildlife encounters. Whales migrate along the coast at this time and whale sharks, the world’s largest fish, visit the waters around La Paz between the months of October-May.

There are plenty of affordable seaside bars and restaurants to choose in town but eating where the locals eat can help you save some money. At Tacos de Pescado el Estadio, you can enjoy fresh fish tacos for less than a dollar.

The closest airport to La Paz is Manuel Márquez de León International Airport which is used by a large variety of international airline carriers. Autobues Águila serves most of Baja California Sur’s airports and towns and makes transfers very affordable.

La Paz is also easily accessible from other parts of Baja California Sur, with the journey from Los Cabos taking around 2 hours by car.

cheap caribbean islands near America for a tropical winter escape

The winter months in North America are the perfect time to escape to Grenada as it is the start of the dry season. It offers inexpensive holidays within easy reach of the USA.

The island is located in the Southern Caribbean and is regarded as one of the safest places in the Caribbean.

Fondly referred to as the isle of Spice, Grenada is the second largest producer of nutmeg in the world after Indonesia. In addition to nutmeg, the island grows premium cocoa beans, ginger, turmeric, cloves and bay leaves.

To experience the authentic flavor of the island’s chocolate, House of Chocolate is an affordable café to visit which uses chocolate as the principal ingredient in most food and drinks. There is also an in-house museum which demonstrates how cocoa beans are harvested and processed.

Another exciting  thing to do is go to St George’s , the capital city of the island, and take photos at Fort George. This fort, built by the French between the years 1706-1710, provides some of the most breathtaking views of the capital and surrounding areas.

All the beaches in Grenada are public and free to access. The best white sand beach on the island is Grand Anse Beach which is a gorgeous two miles stretch with turquoise waters.

The beach is situated near hotels, public transportation, restaurants, malls, banks and about fifteen minutes’ drive from the capital city.

Rick’s Café is an excellent location in the Grand Anse Shopping Centre for wraps, burgers, pizzas and locally made Sugar & Spice ice cream.

Also, be sure to check out Umbrellas Beach Bar & 61 Degrees West for lunch if you are spending the day on Grand Anse Beach.

The Sea Breeze Hotel is approximately ten minutes by car from the Maurice Bishop International Airport.

Rachel says, “Budget friendly accommodation options are available on the island and our recommended choice is Sea Breeze Hotel which offers views of Grand Anse Beach.

It is situated near the road and a bus stop is right across the street. The travel time to the capital city is about fifteen minutes and the bus fare is USD $1.

Sea Breeze Hotel is five minutes’ walk to Grand Anse Shopping Centre and Republic Bank Grenada.”

best affordable tropical destinations in winter a short flight from UsA

St. Kitts and Nevis

St Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean are one of the best warm winter budget friendly tropical destinations to visit near the USA.

There are so many awesome  things to do in St Kitts and Nevis  that you will never be bored in this hidden paradise. With year-round tropical weather, one of the best free activities is visiting one of the many beautiful beaches.

Being a volcanic island, there are both white and black sand beaches dotted all around. All beaches are accessible to the public, even the ones in front of hotels, though they may charge you to use their sun loungers and umbrellas.

Along with the incredible beaches, the warm turquoise water of the Caribbean sea is warm most of the year so swimming is a must.

If you love being in the water, then head to Shipwreck beach. Rent a snorkelling set for a couple of hours and explore the shallow reef just off the shore. See the shoals of tropical fish, hidden lobsters and if you are lucky, you may spot a turtle or an eagle ray.

December in St Kitts is party central with the annual Sugar Mas Carnival taking place between Christmas and New Year. Head to Basseterre and watch the colourful carnival parade as it meanders through the town centre or grab some local beers and watch from one of the bars or restaurants.

For cheap eats, head to one of the food courts in converted shipping containers and get some tasty food such as ribs, chicken, noodles, burgers, shawarma and even sushi.

Getting around on St Kitts is easy with the local ‘H’ buses running from Basseterre to the main parts of the island.

Flight Times To Brasseterre

From New York: 4h 20m

From Chicago: 6h 50m (including one layover)

From Houston: 6h 20m (including one layover)

From Los Angeles: 9h 20m (including one layover)

In the winter months, average high temperatures are around 83°F, rarely dipping below 74 °F in the evening. There is little to no rain.

Stephanie says, “Some of the best cheap hotels are found in Basseterre which is the main town on the island and a great base. Prices start from as little as $30 USD a night.”

best low cost Mexican beach destination for a warm winter escape from USA

Cozumel, Mexico

Mexico’s largest Caribbean island,  Cozumel  is a year-round paradise that has beautiful beaches, Mayan ruins, and some of the world’s best scuba diving. It one of the best cheap places to visit close to the USA for warm winter escapes.

There are many free and inexpensive activities to enjoy on the island. You can explore San Miguel de Cozumel’s main plaza, Benito Juarez Park, which has a beautiful clock tower and is lined with cafes and restaurants. You can have a drink or visit the shops without spending too much money.

If you want to visit some of the island’s most beautiful beaches, you can go to a beach club. Some have small covers and minimum food purchases, but others will give you access to the beach at no charge.

A ticket to the ruins of San Gervaiso is less than $5, making this important Mayan fertility site a great way to spend a morning on the island. You can combine a day trip to San Gervaiso with a visit to the Punta Sur Eco-Park.

To save money on meals, walk a few blocks inland from San Miguel de Cozumel’s main plaza before settling on a restaurant.

Cozumel has its own airport. It’s a 7 minute drive from the airport to the main plaza.

Another option is to fly into Cancun, take a bus down to Playa del Carmen, and then a ferry across. Keep in mind that this route will add $50-$100 or more to your trip (and at least a few hours), so skip this if flying into Cozumel is comparable or even a little more expensive.

Flight Times To Cozumel

From New York: 5h 50m (including one layover)

From Chicago: 3h 40m

From Houston: 2h 20m

From Miami: 2h

From Los Angeles: 7h (including one layover)

In winter, average high temperatures are around 83°F and they rarely dip below 67 °F in the evening. Expect a few days of rain each winter month.

Stephanie says, “There are many lovely all-inclusive resorts on Cozumel, but a good budget hotel located right on the plaza is the Suites Colonial Cozumel . This hotel has a great location within walking distance to the ferry terminal and many shops and restaurants.”

One of the best things to do in Cozumel is to take an electric bike tour of Punta Sur Ecological Park . A little on the pricey side, it is well worth budgeting for this. Punta Sur Ecological Park is spectacularly beautiful and fundamentally untouched. It is part of a 247-acre (1.00 km 2 ) ecological park that covers the reefs, beaches, lagoons, and low forest of the surrounding area. It is home to wide open sandy beaches, large crashing waves onto the shore, and wildlife such as sea turtles, iguanas and crocodiles.

best cheap warm winter vacations from America

La Fortuna, Costa Rica

The central American country of Costa Rica attracts more and more American tourists every year, due to its tropical climate and dreamy rainforests. La Fortuna, located in the center of the country, is a hot hub for backpackers who are drawn to the cheap accommodation, food, and attractions.

When visiting La Fortuna, you can relax in one of the best free hot springs in Costa Rica located in the middle of a lush forest.

This free hot spring doesn’t really have a name but you won’t struggle to find it. Go to the Tabacon thermal resort and park there. After a short 5-minute walk from the parking lot, you will come across a shallow river, almost at bath temperature!

After relaxing in the hot spring, you can hike to the Arenal Volcano summit by yourself by following the marked trails. This active volcano is quite famous in the country because of its conical shape. The hike to the summit lasts about one hour and a half.

Last but not least, there are two famous waterfalls in the area. La Fortuna Waterfall is very powerful and impressive, as it is 246 feet tall. The entrance ticket costs $18 for adults and $5 for children.

El Salto Waterfall, on the other hand, is smaller, but is surrounded by lush foliage and there’s no entrance fee.

You can find delicious cheap food on the main street. At Restaurante Nene’s, the grilled fish is delicious and only $7 USD.

To visit La Fortuna from the United-States, you will need to take a short flight to either Liberia or San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica.

From either international airports, you will need to drive, take a shuttle or buses to reach La Fortuna. It is approximately 2h 30m from Liberia and 3 hours from San Jose.

Flight Times To San Juan

Between November and March, the temperature ranges from evening lows of 72°F to daytime highs of 92°F. La Fortuna is in a rainforest, but it hardly rains in December, January, February and March.

Soline says, “There are many hippie and cheap hotels, such as Cabinas Los Tucanes or Selina.”

best moderately priced Caribbean island holidays in winter from continental USA

St. Croix, USVI

St. Croix is one of the most underrated and least visited tropical destinations from continental United States. A U.S. territory in the Caribbean, St. Croix is a safe and relaxed island with stunning turquoise water, vibrant culture, incredible biodiversity, picturesque colonial architecture, and important history.

Since St. Croix is part of the U.S., Americans don’t need a passport to visit the island, making it a convenient spot for a tropical getaway without leaving the country. While food and accommodation on the island can be a little pricey, it’s not difficult to explore St. Croix on a budget.

There are lots of things to do on St. Croix . Better yet, nearly every St. Croix activity is free—from beach hopping, swimming with sea turtles, strolling through bright colonial towns to exploring historical sites.

St. Croix goes all out for Christmas with its Crucian Christmas Festival, also called Carnival. Locals proudly parade through colonial streets, celebrating the island’s cultural diversity and honoring its history.

I recommend renting an Airbnb with a kitchenette and cooking some meals at home during your stay to save money. Save your budget for the experiences (and food) most meaningful to you. Eating a few meals at home goes a long way since most restaurant meals cost around $20 USD in St. Croix.

You can fly directly to St. Croix, but in most cases, you will have at least one layover in St. Thomas. For cheaper flights, you can fly direct to St. Thomas and reach the island by a 90-minute ferry from St. Thomas.

It’s best to navigate the island by rental car, but with stunning beaches around every single corner, you can also easily stay near one of the main towns (Christainsted or Frederiksted) and explore on foot.

St. Croix is worth visiting year-round, but the best time to see the island (according to locals) is in winter when average high temperatures are around 83°F. They rarely dip below 72 °F in the evening. In addition, there is practically no rain.

Annie says, “If you want to stay somewhere unique, check out the Hotel on the Cay . It’s the only hotel on a small nearby island, just a 2-minute ferry ride from St. Croix’s main town, Christiansted.

Hotel on the Cay’s prices are surprisingly low considering that it’s on a private island. You can find cheaper accommodation elsewhere, but it’s worth checking it out since the nightly rates are comparable to average hotels in most U.S. cities. .”

best competitively priced warm winter destinations close to America

Bacalar, Mexico

A wonderfully underrated place to visit for affordable tropical winter vacations close to America is Bacalar, Mexico. Located in Quintana Roo but not as buzzy (or expensive) as Riviera Maya destinations like Tulum and Playa del Carmen, Bacalar is a true hidden gem .

There are a lot of free and inexpensive  things to do in Bacalar . For a free activity, head to the Fuerte San Felipe Bacalar, the fort in the center of town. It’s free to walk around this historic fortress, and it’s really interesting to see what remains.

Activities are also inexpensive. Boat tours around the lagoon cost just about $20 USD and will take you around the most beautiful parts. You will quickly learn why it earns the name “Lake of 7 Colors”.

You can also rent a stand-up paddle board for about $30 USD a day or a lot cheaper if you only want it for an hour or two.

The restaurants in the center are generally inexpensive, especially if you walk on streets that aren’t on the waterfront. Consider El Manatí Bacalar and La Neta Taqueria for well-priced, delicious food.

Currently, there aren’t any direct flights to Chetumal from major American cities. In addition, with layovers, total travel times are very long.

Accordingly, the best way to get to Tulum is by flying to Mexico City and then taking another flight to Chetumal. From Chetumal, it’s about a 30-minute drive by taxi to Bacalar.

You may have to purchase two tickets to get the best cost savings versus one flight with a layover in Mexico City. For example, NY – Mexico City return, and Mexico City – Chetumal return.

Alternately, you can fly to Cancun and take an ADO bus or rent a car, but the drive takes nearly 5 hours. If interested in this alternative. please see the flight times for Cancun under the heading Playa Del Carmen or Isla Holbox above.

Flight Times To Chetumal

From New York: 13h (including one layover)

From Chicago: 10h ((including one layover))

From Houston: 12h (including one layover)

From Miami: 8h 30m (including one layover)

Flight Times To Mexico City

From New York: 5h 20m

From Chicago: 4h

From Los Angeles: 3h 30m

From Mexico City to Chetumal, it is a direct 1h 50m flight.

In winter, average high temperatures are around 84°F, rarely dipping below 62 °F in the evening. Expect a few days of rain each winter month.

Allison says, “There are plenty of accommodation options — the popular Yak Lake Hostel is a favorite among backpackers. Che Bacalar Hostel & Bar also offers cheap accommodations with great amenities, like a gorgeous pool area.”

There are many wonderful cheap warm winter destinations close to the United States. These inexpensive tropical vacations offer everyone looking to escape the cold and dreary winter months of December, January, February and March a beautiful sunny escape. All that is left is for you to figure out your budget, the best and easiest destination for you to reach from your home, and then, book and enjoy!

10 Best Warm Places to Travel to This Winter

Escape the chill in these warm-weather destinations.

warm places to visit for cheap

Sure, the winter months have their perks – skiing, sledding, snowman building, and of course the holidays. But the cold! Oh, the cold. It digs deep under your skin, straight to your bones, chilling everything from your toes to your chattering teeth. Fortunately, several year-round, warm-weather destinations can offer a much-needed respite from the frigid air.

From island getaways to sizzling cities, here are 10 of the best warm places to visit this winter.

Ambergris Caye, Belize

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

With direct flights from several U.S. cities (including New York, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, and Miami), getting to the Central American nation of Belize is easier than you think. The country's interior is filled with lush, verdant landscapes home to monkeys and even a few rare jaguars, but the real star is the coast. To experience the white-sand beaches at their best, make your way to Ambergris Caye. Belize's largest island is known for its water sports, including diving and snorkeling around the nearby Belize Barrier Reef. For a luxe visit, book a few nights at Alaia Belize , which not only provides easy access to the beach, but also has a swimming pool suspended six stories above the main access corridor, with portholes in the bottom that offer aerial views of the property.

Mexico City

Jorge Castro/Travel + Leisure

Though winter in CDMX won't have the tropical heat you might expect from Mexico — temperatures tend to top out in the low 70s this time of year — it still provides a balmy alternative to snowy U.S. locales. The capital is flush with cultural attractions , including first-rate museums (like the stunning Museo Frida Kahlo ), incredible shopping at both high-end stores and local markets, and some of the best restaurants in the world (we're looking at you, Pujol ). Make Las Alcobas your home base. The luxury hotel offers lavish guest rooms and a tranquil spa in which to relax after a day of urban exploration.

Key West, Florida

Key West is a true delight in the winter months, as the average high temperature never really falls below 75 degrees. It's the perfect place for fruity cocktails on the sand, sunset strolls down lively shopping streets, and slice after slice of tangy Key lime pie. Make the most of your time here by booking a stay at the historic Casa Marina Key West , which recently underwent an extensive renovation. Through the hotel, you can book local food tours, golf outings, and sailboat cruises, or you can simply sit by the pool and soak in the Florida Keys sun.

Rangiroa, French Polynesia

Though more than a hundred islands comprise French Polynesia , just a handful (think Bora Bora and Moorea) get most of the attention. If you prefer somewhere a little less crowded, try the quiet, sparsely developed atoll of Rangiroa. Located about an hour's flight from Tahiti, it has pristine beaches and a massive lagoon brimming with sea life. Book the Hotel Kia Ora Resort & Spa , which boasts stunning overwater bungalows and villas with private plunge pools.

Panama Highlands

Panama is another destination with splendid coastlines, but its interior shouldn't be overlooked, especially for a winter vacation. Temperatures in the country's highlands sit in the 60s and 70s year round, creating ideal conditions for outdoor adventures. Visitor-favorite activities here include bird-watching and, for more adventurous types, criss-crossing the verdant mountains via the famous hanging bridges of Boquete. The region also has a stellar coffee scene worth exploring. Book a stay at The Haven , an adults-only wellness hotel that'll help you get on a coffee tour as soon as you land.

If you're seeking an African safari this winter without the crowds of a classic destination like Kenya, try the less-traveled terrain of Namibia . This nation on Africa's southwest coast offers seclusion, otherworldly landscapes, and near-guaranteed warm weather. It's also the perfect place to see animals like lions, elephants, leopards, and rhinos in their natural environment. There are several outfitters in the area, but Natural Selection is top-notch. It has numerous camps to choose from, including the famed Shipwreck Lodge on the Skeleton Coast.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

If you want to mix some time under the sun with some cultural enrichment, look no further than San Juan. The capital of Puerto Rico has long stretches of white-sand beaches, plus historical attractions like the Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Visitors will also find lots of delicious spots to eat (make reservations at Cocina Abierta ). In San Juan, it's best to go boutique, so check into the O:LV Fifty Five hotel, which features a rooftop bar and pool offering the best views in town.

When the first cold snap hits, book your flight to Dubai. This desert oasis offers not just warm weather but a mind-boggling array of things to do, from swimming in the Persian Gulf to shopping at some of the world's most luxurious stores and dining at multiple Michelin-starred restaurants. (Don't forget to visit the tallest building in the world while you're here, via an elevator that travels at an ear-popping 30 feet per second.) Try Atlantis, The Palm for your overnight stays — it's a veritable playground for those looking to indulge in the finer things in life.

Winter happens to be the best time to visit Bangkok . The weather is balmy year-round thanks to Thailand's tropical location, but the winter months offer slightly more comfortable temperatures, with highs rarely exceeding 90 degrees.

To get the most out of this massive city, it's best to book a lengthy visit or get a guide — there are tons of tour options on sites like Airbnb Experiences that focus on food, culture, and photography. Don't miss out on the city's canals, either, which you can tour on a long-tail boat. Make your home base the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok , a long-running honoree in Travel + Leisure 's World's Best Awards.

The Bahamas

Sometimes, you just need to get away and not think about a single thing. And that's exactly what you can do in the Bahamas, an island chain that's just a three-hour flight from New York City. There are a number of beautiful destinations to see here, and many of the archipelago's inhabited islands are home to all-inclusive resorts that are ideal for families, couples, and even solo travelers.

This Southern Mexican city has plenty to offer tourists looking for a good deal in December. Enjoy great savings on hotel rooms and at some local venues as well. You're likely heading to Mexico for some sol , so plan to spend quality time poolside.

View over Budapest in winter

Bundle up! Budapest's chilly weather keeps most tourists away in December, giving those who don't mind the cooler temperatures (ranging from -1.8 to 3.1°C) a break on both the cost of accommodations and the crowds at major attractions.

With the winter weather comes snowfall, blanketing the historic city and its beautiful sites in a magical dusting of powder. Take a look at photos of Buda Castle, the Hungarian Parliament Building, and Fisherman's Bastion to see just how dreamy Budapest can look in the winter. You can also shop for souvenirs at one of Budapest's Christmas Markets.

When you're ready to warm up, head to one of Budapest's wonderful museums for some indoor sightseeing. You can see works by Old Masters at the Museum of Fine Arts or royal regalia at the Hungarian National Museum . For an even cozier experience, take a dip at a local bathhouse. The famous Széchenyi Thermal Bath has a mix of steamy outdoor and indoor baths that will relax your muscles and leave your body warm for hours.

With great weather and relatively low hotel occupancy rates, Los Angeles is another worthwhile spot for an affordable getaway in December. Book your flights and hotels early to score the best deal. Then, continue to reap the savings by enjoying some of the top free things to do in Los Angeles . You don't need to spend a dime to gaze through the public telescopes at the Griffith Observatory , marvel at world-class art at The Broad , snap photos in between the outdoor art installation of 202 antique cast iron streetlights at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art , or check out the Japanese architecture in Little Tokyo .

A beautiful beach in Punta Cana

Punta Cana is the place to be if you're dreaming of somewhere warm, bright, and beautiful. It's also a good deal by Caribbean standards, with affordable all-inclusive packages, and boy does it boast beautiful beaches .

Surrounded by turquoise water and white, sandy beaches, this picture-perfect spot on the eastern side of the Caribbean's Dominican Republic is pretty close to paradise. Adventurers can zipline through the rainforest canopy, windsurf, kiteboard, sail, dive, or snorkel. Not up for all of that? Don't worry. You can golf, ride horses, walk the beach, or float in the pool.

Another plus? December is the time to catch good deals and fab weather. This month offers highs of about 85 degrees and less rain than you'll find from April to November. It's ramping up for high tourist season, so hotel and airfare prices will be on the more affordable end of the spectrum.

Magens Bay, St. Thomas

One of the most popular tourist destinations in the Caribbean, the U.S. Virgin Islands offer an unforgettable and truly relaxing vacation. Those who visit St. Thomas can enjoy swimming with turtles, snorkeling, or diving in the bright blue ocean, golfing, shopping, and fantastic food—not bad for an island that's only 32 square miles.

This destination offers everything from luxury resorts to basic hotels and bed and breakfast lodging. It's easy to find something to fit your budget.

Stowe, Vermont

While some ski resorts in Vermont offer big savings on lift passes at this time of the year due to run closures, Stowe does not. That's the bad news. Now for the upside: they don't have to because they get more snow than most resorts in December and have more runs open for you to ski. If you book lift passes online at least seven days in advance, you'll save money no matter when you plan to come.

So, what's making this a cheap holiday, you ask? The savings come in the form of hotel deals. Rooms in early to mid-December can be over $100 cheaper a night, which leaves you with plenty left over for shopping or lift tickets.

While you're still soaking up the high from saving your hard-earned cash, take time out to revel in the beauty that is Stowe. It's been dubbed one of the most beautiful small towns in Vermont for a reason, after all!

Non-skiers will love the spa amenities found in many of the resorts, and the town's shopping and restaurants are first-class. In addition to the unbeatable skiing and snowboarding, activity seekers can enjoy indoor rock-climbing at Stowe Mountain Resort or ice-skating at Spruce Peak Village .

Winter sunrise over Lake Louise

Banff truly shines during its best season: winter. From world-class skiing and snowboarding to snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, skating, curling, and sledding, there's no lack of outdoor activities in this spectacular village.

Those who crave adventure won't want to miss the Johnston Canyon Icewalk . Conditions can be slippery and dangerous, so it's safest to book a guide. Want to relax? Book a horse-drawn sleigh ride through snowy meadows or bathe in the Banff Hot Springs .

Skiing at Banff is expensive, no matter when you do it. That said, the longer you ski, the more deals you get, especially in early to mid-December. If you book a "Stay and Ski" package, you'll notice great savings, including cheaper room rates and discounted lift tickets at three resorts: Banff Sunshine , Lake Louise Ski Resort , and Mount Norquay . Banff loves early birds, so the sooner you book, the better the savings. Same goes for your airfare.

The Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City during winter

July is the best month to visit Québec City for those who don't mind footing a hefty bill at hotels and restaurants, and elbowing their way through crowds of people searching for the city's best poutine. Traveling to this lovely Canadian gem in December, though, is magical and comparatively cheap.

This being Québec, you're pretty much guaranteed a dusting of snow or, more likely, a large dump that casts the historic buildings and parks in an enchanted light. Visit a German Christmas market at Le Grand Marché or another in Vieux-Québec . Traipse through festively adorned streets so European, you'll forget you're in Canada. Rue de Petit Champlain in particular begs to be photographed.

While you're in town, toboggan down Au 1884 , a giant sledding run thought to be the oldest attraction in Québec City. It lies beside North America's most photographed hotel, the Fairmont Le Chateâu Frontenac . Booking this iconic hotel around Christmas is the most expensive time to stay. Choosing a room during the first two weeks of December, on the other hand, will cut your price by at least half. Built by the Canadian Pacific Railroad company in 1892, this lavish building offers remarkable views of the Saint Lawrence River.

Rio Celeste Waterfall in Volcan Tenorio National Park

December is a great time to visit Costa Rica if you're looking for a bargain and ideal beach weather. This month marks the tail end of the rainy season, welcoming a refreshing break from the humidity that plagued the area for many months before. The temperature highs at this time hover around the 77 degree mark, perfect for adventuring through the jungle, ziplining, or lounging on some of Costa Rica's most beautiful beaches .

While some roads may be closed off and on due to residue from the rainy season, visitors usually experience dry skies at this time of year. They are also privy to competitive hotel and restaurant rates compared to other travelers who either don't want to risk the chance of rain by visiting in early December, or are hoping to travel for the holidays.

Speaking of holidays, the Christmas/New Year's season is one of the most popular (and expensive) times to visit Costa Rica. Some hotels book up months in advance, so those planning to stay over the holiday need to plan well in advance and be prepared to foot a pretty substantial bill.

Downtown Chicago in the winter

Winter is one of the cheapest times to travel to Chicago. As long as you avoid visiting during the Christmas holidays, you'll be in for some serious savings. Hotel rates drop dramatically once the barometer begins to plummet, and early December visitors, in particular, can notice a more budget-friendly bill at the end of their stay.

While frigid temps can at times make visiting Chicago's best parks a bit challenging, winter guests to the windy city can enjoy plenty of indoor attractions. The Art Institute of Chicago boasts a vast collection of historic and modern masterpieces, while a trip to the Alder Planetarium will help you get closer to the world beyond. The Museum of Science and Industry is another must-see that features multiple hands-on exhibits.

Plus, you'll have the chance to witness some of the festive charm that makes spending the holidays in Chicago an enjoyable experience. The Magnificent Mile Lights Festival sets off at the end of November but lasts through the holiday season. December travelers can also take a twirl around the ice at Millennium Park .

River Legacy Parks in Arlington, Texas

One of the lesser visited cities in Texas, Arlington is a super cheap place to travel in December. The massive sports venues are a major draw for this small city, located between Dallas and Fort Worth. Its AT&T Stadium is home to the Dallas Cowboys . Choctaw Stadium (previously known as Global Life Park) is worthy of a tour, even if baseball isn't being played while you're there.

Arlington is likely the only place you can visit an International Bowling Museum & Hall of Fame . Good news for amusement park lovers: the massive, Six Flags Over Texas is open weekends year-round and on holidays.

Arlington's Christkindl Market is known as one of the best Christmas markets in the US . In addition to all the tasty treats and handmade crafts you'd expect to find, visitors with kids will enjoy its family-friendly vibe.

Texas Live! is the city's entertainment hub. It boasts multiple restaurants, shops, and is home to the Live! by Loews - Arlington Texas resort. This is a chic and contemporary hotel boasting 300 luxury guest rooms and suites. Floor-to-ceiling windows make the most of the view and there are many options to enjoy food and refreshments on-site.

Charlotte, North Carolina skyline

While most tend to visit Charlotte during its warmer months, December is a cheaper time to explore the top things to do in this North Carolina gem. With highs hovering around the 50-degree mark, you'll be comfortable while you wander the sites and traipse around Uptown Charlotte or skate around the ice at the U.S. National Whitewater Center .

The NASCAR Hall of Fame , Billy Graham Library , and Discovery Place Science museum will keep everyone busy. When you're finished exploring, spend the money you saved on your hotel and airfare to enjoy a little retail therapy, or perhaps splurge on a fancy meal in one of the city's best restaurants.

Beautiful beach in Puerto Rico

There are few things as exhilarating as scoring a deal on a beach vacation, especially when you're leaving behind a cold, snowy winter. Although winter is the most popular time to visit Puerto Rico, travelers can still enjoy affordable rates and budget-friendly airfare to this cheap Caribbean destination.

Puerto Rico is a hot spot for lovers of the sun, sand, and surf. It's home to multiple beautiful beaches , so visitors won't be at a loss for somewhere fabulous to unfurl their towels. Wandering the colorful streets of Old San Juan is one of the most popular things to do in Puerto Rico –and it doesn't cost a penny unless you fall prey to temptation and buy wares sold in its charming shops.

El Morro Fort lies in Old San Juan, at the tip of a peninsula. This historic spot is worthy of a visit, as is the impressive Castillo de San Cristóbal , the largest Spanish fort built in the New World.

Plan on spending most of your time sunbathing, swimming, scuba diving and more at beautiful beaches like Nai Harn and Kata Noi. But remember, December falls within Phuket's peak tourist season, so you won't find many deals for flights and accommodations during this month. Avoid a holiday visit in late December for slightly better rates.

Located in the eastern Himalayas, Bhutan is a backpacker's dream due to its breathtaking landscapes and unmatched preservation. The remote kingdom's focus on cultural and environmental sustainability means heritage sites like the cliff-clinging Paro Taktsang and the riverside Punakha Dzong are never overcrowded. But cooler winter temperatures (averages range from the 30s to the 60s, depending on elevation) mean you'll encounter even fewer tourists. While a trip to this intriguing destination won't be cheap, a low-season visit can drive down the price of lodging and tours.

Nestled in southern Chilean Patagonia, this national park offers travelers a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Hailed among hikers as one of the most scenic destinations in the world, the park is home to turquoise lakes and dense forests, plus massive Grey Glacier and the towering granite of Cuernos del Paine. December offers up to 17 hours of daylight, allowing plenty of time for extensive hikes. But even though December is part of Patagonia's peak summer season, temperatures drop dramatically after nightfall, so visitors will want to pack layers.

This Hawaiian paradise is the perfect place to escape winter's onset. Weary travelers can thaw on colorful beaches like Punalu'u Beach (which has beautiful black sand ) and Papakolea Beach (a unique green sand option), while more adventurous types can go for a hike in 'Akaka Falls State Park or catch a glimpse of the more than 4,000-foot-tall Kilauea volcano at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. You'll likely contend with other snowbirds in December, but you'll find that hotel prices on the Big Island are still consistently lower than those on neighboring isles.

If Old Man Winter has you dreaming of warming things up, consider a trip to the Spice Island. Grenada, a tiny island in the Caribbean known for its aromatic spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, boasts steady temps in the 80s. And since December sits just between the rainy season and high tourism season, it's the perfect time to catch some rays without the crowds (or cost) of the months to come. Spend your days lounging on Grand Anse Beach or sampling the island's rich flavors at local markets or the House of Chocolate.

It's not surprising that dozens of holiday movies are set in New York. Dazzling sights like the iconic Christmas tree and ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center, decked-out window displays at Macy's and horse-drawn carriages in Central Park conjure up holiday cheer throughout the city. And while this metropolis offers plenty to do throughout the year, festive shows, Christmas-themed pop-up experiences and even the nip in the air make December one of New York's most magical months. Just be prepared for a bit of sticker shock; the holiday season is also one of the most popular (and expensive) times of year to visit.

If you're willing to brave the cold, travel to Prague for a fun and festive winter vacation. The city turns into a winter wonderland in December, with snow-dusted buildings and Christmas markets selling everything from locally made jewelry to toys to Christmas ornaments. Those with little ones in tow should try to arrive in early December when the annual St. Nicholas Eve event takes place. During this traditional celebration, you'll see Czechia's version of St. Nick, along with his angel and devil guides, hand out candy and other treats as they walk around the city.

While the Northern Hemisphere transitions to winter in December, Rio de Janeiro enters its peak summer season. And although this is one of the wettest times of the year here, you'll still enjoy optimal warmth and mostly sunny conditions. As such, there will be plenty of opportunities to see must-visit sights like the Christ the Redeemer statue or Sugarloaf Mountain. If you're keen on experiencing Rio's lively party scene during your visit, be sure to time your trip around Réveillon. This popular New Year's Eve celebration on Copacabana Beach draws millions of people annually with its music, dancing and fireworks.

The holiday season in Germany's fourth largest city can only be described as magical. Cologne hosts a handful of Christmas markets, including the popular Advent village at Cologne Cathedral, which boasts 150 stalls. When you're not taking in the city's imposing architecture or getting into the jovial spirit with a glass of Kölsch beer (a Cologne original), pop into Museum Ludwig to view modern art or the Chocolate Museum for tasty samples. Combat the dreary weather – average highs are in the low 40s and rain is common – by soaking away the chill at a thermal spa such as Neptunbad or Claudius Therme.

It's easy to fall in love with this Canadian destination, especially when it's covered in fresh snow. You'll be enchanted by Old Québec's sights and sounds as it transforms into a Christmas village. Shop for gifts (or for yourself) in Quartier Petit-Champlain, home to one of the oldest shopping streets in North America. Plus, with its 17th- and 18th-century architecture, French-speaking Quebec City allows you to soak up European culture without dropping the cash for a flight across the pond. Just be sure to bundle up; temperatures can drop to the single digits in December.

' src=

  • April 12, 2023

Are you looking for the perfect budget-friendly vacation in the United States? Look no further! In this article, we’ll be taking a look at some of the most affordable warm places to travel in the US. Whether you’re looking for a beach vacation, a mountain retreat, or something more urban and bustling with life, there’s something for everyone here. From cheaper lodging to attractions that won’t break the bank, this guide will show you how to get the most out of your money and make your vacation unforgettable.

7 Cheap Warm Places to Travel in US

The Budget Traveling Team with the help of expert opinions and user votes, ranked the 7 Cheap Warm Places to Travel in US.

 1. St. Petersburg, Florida – Cheap Warm Places to Travel in US

Cheap Warm Places to Travel in US

Cheap Warm Places to Travel in US

With some of the warmest year-round weather and the most beautiful beaches in the U.S., it’s no surprise that visitors flock to Florida in the winter. The Sunshine State is home to some serious gems, and St. Petersburg shines as one of the brightest. Winter temperatures in the 70s mean you can ditch the scarf and head downtown for a street mural tour, visit more than 40 galleries and artists’ studios on monthly art walks, or even brew a beer at the city’s 16 craft breweries. Trendy restaurants, delicious cocktails and a host of world-class museums also await you. You can even take a streetcar down to the beach (yes, people still hit the sand in November, December and sometimes even January). To top it off, the coastal views are ideal for winter sunsets.

2. Catalina Island, California

Cheap Warm Places to Travel in US

Catalina Island’s beaches and ocean activities are big draws during the summer, but this small island off the coast of mainland California is also a great winter destination. Temps in the high 50s may not be ideal for sand and surf activities, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the great outdoors. The island is known for its wildlife, and the cooler weather makes it a refreshing hiking area. There are several hikes to choose from, including quick and easy walks from the Catalina Casino and more advanced trails along the Trans-Catalina Trail. It’s also a great time of year to stroll around town, join a food and wine walking tour, and enjoy the scenery from a zip line.

3. Puerto Rico

Cheap Warm Places to Travel in US

We encourage travelers to put Puerto Rico on their travel list this year. Not only does the island have winter temperatures reaching 80 degrees, but it also accepts U.S. dollars and U.S. citizens don’t need a passport to visit . Plus, you can warm your winter heart knowing that your money is helping to rebuild the island’s economy as it recovers from the devastation of Hurricane Maria. Get ready to eat amazing food (will anyone eat it?), Stroll Old San Juan, ride horses in El Yunque National Forest and lounge on the beach. For a real treat, time your visit with a new moon and book a bioluminescent kayaking excursion.

4. Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Cheap Warm Places to Travel in US

Hilton Head is another U.S. island that’s great during the winter. While you shouldn’t expect tropical weather here, there is still plenty of sunshine and mild winter temperatures that tend to stay in the 60s and 70s. Since winter is off-season, you’ll also find fewer crowds and shorter wait times , allowing you to squeeze in a well-rounded itinerary that includes dolphin cruises, beachcombing and visits to top restaurants. The sunny, cool weather is also ideal for exercising on the tennis court, exploring the island by bicycle and playing golf.

5. Gulf Shores, Alabama

Cheap Warm Places to Travel in US

This city on Alabama’s Gulf Coast is most popular during spring break, but the sunshine usually keeps temperatures warm with temperatures in the low 60s to low 70s through December. Ocean temperatures vary, but travelers can still trade snowmen to build sand castles here. Other outdoor activities include boating, golfing, parasailing, hiking and cruises. Families will find a variety of seasonal events, from Christmas markets and Santa visits to themed dinners and pet parades. In addition, hotel prices are lower and restaurants are less crowded this time of year.

6. Golden Isles, Georgia

Cheap Warm Places to Travel in US

Georgia’s four barrier islands, known as the Golden Isles, were named for their natural beauty and pristine beaches. Escaping the winter weather is easy on these luxury islands, thanks to temperatures hovering in the 60s (although last year, the Islands saw some days in the 70s). Mix up your gloves, grab the sunscreen and head to the beach. Visitors can also hike through the marsh, spot wildlife along the river, or explore by horseback or kayak. Bonus points if you can spot a bald eagle, right whale or hen duck – all are fleeing winter by migrating here. Golf is a popular pastime here as well. The winter months also showcase a treasure hunt as several handmade glass orbs are hidden on Jekyll Island. If you find one, you can keep it; it looks like the perfect souvenir to us.

7. Maui, Hawaii

Cheap Warm Places to Travel in US

You may have to travel a little further to get to Maui , but you won’t remember the name of winter once you land on the Hawaiian island. Temps in the 70s mean you can still hit the beach, though the Pacific waters can be a bit chilly for swimming. Daytime activities include boating, fishing, hiking and whale watching. We recommend turning along the road to Hana for stunning views and access points with great hikes to waterfalls. Meanwhile, bonfire parties on the sand really heat things up at night. Just keep in mind that winter is peak season for Hawaii, so expect high prices and tons of fellow winter deserters.

warm places to visit for cheap

Hotel prices in Cancun can actually be quite high during the peak weeks, but lately there have been some very good bargains in the 3-star category for much of the high season. It’s harder to find cheap meals and drinks here, but it’s still a bargain destination compared to elsewhere in the Caribbean. This area is also ideal for families and we rank it near the top among the best Caribbean destinations for families with children .

It’s worth noting that Cancun itself is mostly a long L-shaped strip of big hotels with very few restaurants in between them. If you would prefer to stay in a town filled with smaller hotels, restaurants, bars, shops, and plenty of other things to do, I’d highly recommend Playa del Carmen , which is about an hour south by taxi or shuttle. You’ll encounter actual Mexican people there rather than just hotel workers, and for many of us that is a big plus. In fact, the greater Cancun area is so large and filled with different choices that I recently put together a guide to choosing where to stay in the Cancun area so you can match your style with the best option.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

warm places to visit for cheap

Here you’ll find over 100 resorts to choose from, including about 60 that are fully all-inclusive. Many of these all-inclusive hotels have 500 or more rooms, which helps them keep prices modest compared to small resorts on other islands. Those mainly interested in relaxing on a lovely white beach should consider package deals that include a hotel stay and airfare into the nearby airport. Long story short, if you are interested in the best-value location to enjoy an all-inclusive beach resort in February, Punta Cana is the place to go. It also has a fairly new and efficient airport and good roads, which is more than you can say for most of its competition in the Caribbean. Even with all the affordable places, Punta Cana also has an entry on the most luxurious all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean as well.

If Montego Bay itself doesn’t sound perfect then you might instead consider  Negril  or  Ocho Rios , both of which are about 90 minutes from the same airport and each has a different feel. All of these resort areas have plenty of water sports and other activities on offer, at prices that are lower than in most of the Caribbean. Jamaica is also the best and cheapest choice if you want to stay at an all-inclusive hotel in a place where everyone (more or less) speaks English. On the other hand, Jamaica has a reputation for aggressive beach vendors and that is a big turn-off for many.

warm places to visit for cheap

February is part of the high season in Puerto Vallarta and the weather is fittingly perfect. As you can see in the numbers below, 3-star hotels here can be very reasonable, even ones with good locations. Four star hotels here tend to be large chain hotels on the beach, so the value is still pretty good and you get a lot for your money. Flights into PV are usually pretty reasonable as well. Especially if you are on the West Coast, you might also compare prices for Los Cabos, which is discussed below.

You’ll notice that evenings in February get a bit cool so you’ll want to bring at least a light jacket with you, but the days will be consistently warm and perfect for the beach or poolside. The Cabo area is also very safe and tourist-oriented, so this is a good choice for anyone who worries about that sort of thing. And similar to most other Mexican resort areas, there is a huge difference in price between simple 3-star hotels a few blocks from the beach, and the larger 4-star resort hotels directly on the beach.

Some choose to stop in Mexico City on the way to or from Cancun or Puerto Vallarta, as domestic flights are frequent and cheap, and it’s a nice contrast to add some big-city culture to a beach vacation as well. February is still high season for hotels in Mexico City, but there are still great bargains to be found compared to the crowded beaches. Shopping is popular in Mexico City as the selection of international goods is excellent and prices are very competitive as well.

It’s true that February is still during the high season along Colombia’s beaches, but it’s still very cheap here compared to nearly any other Caribbean destination. There are larger luxurious hotels where the best deals are booked early, but also cheaper guesthouses where you can still find something at the last minute if you aren’t too picky. The historic walled city is gorgeous and hotels within the walls can be quite inexpensive. The beach area nearby has more traditional hotels, and they are close enough to go back and forth all day if you like.

Belize is definitely one of the  cheapest Caribbean destinations , and the offshore islands actually do have quite a Caribbean feel in spite of being surrounded by Latin America. There are wonderful resorts here for those willing to spend more, but even the cheaper hotels are decent, and very good bargains even in high season. It’s worth noting that the islands of Belize are not known for abundant sandy beaches since much of the coast is still mangrove forests. There are some resorts that have carved out a small beach, but the best place to go in Belize for sandy beaches is the Placenia peninsula.

There are water sports here and plenty of other activities, but this region is now known mostly for some larger beach hotels that are packed this time of year. There are several small towns in the area as well, so you can find cheaper hotels that are walking distance to the beach if you look around a bit. There are about 10 all-inclusive hotels in this area now and they are probably the best value for any visitor who mainly wants to relax on the beach and do an excursion or two during their stay.

February is near the end of the high season in Buenos Aires, and hotel prices can still be relatively high toward the beginning of the month, with better deals appearing as March nears. As 2024 approaches, the Argentinian currency keeps dropping and the whole country is a crazy bargain. Inflation keeps moving prices higher, but the exchange rate means that it’s still among the world’s best-value destinations. You can usually get a FAR better exchange rate in person if you arrive with US dollars. In fact, for the last few years the exchange rate in person has been right around double the “official rate” so costs will literally be half if you bring cash and exchange it after you arrive. Research the “Blue Dollar” for more up to date information.

This tourist town is also generally cheaper than Buenos Aires, so it’s excellent value in addition to providing great contrast on your trip of Argentina or South America in general. Perhaps surprisingly, Bariloche has German roots and it’s still famous for many chocolate shops as well as other European carry-overs that aren’t widely found elsewhere in the region. And while you are at it you might consider also visiting Argentina’s wine country in  Mendoza .

You might also consider including  Mendoza  on your trip, which is the main wine region of Argentina, and also good value. The same Blue Dollar thing goes here and everywhere in Argentina so it’s wise to arrive with cash and try to pay for most of your trip that way.

Geography fans will know there nowhere in continental Europe has “great weather” in Febuary, but there is still one great choice and it’s very affordable as well. Fortunately the place is quite cheap so it’s very popular most of the year and especially in winter like this. Middle East

February is cool and even a bit rainy in most of the Middle East. An exception is Dubai (below) and  Abu Dhabi , which both have perfect sunny weather. However, Abu Dhabi doesn’t make this list because it’s not really cheap enough to make the cut for a “cheap destinations” list.

  • February avg high: 78°F/26°C

Unlike its neighbor, Abu Dhabi , at least it’s fairly easy to get a reasonably priced hotel room in Dubai. The large chain hotels in the best locations such as Downtown Dubai or the Dubai Marina are very expensive, but you can find a nice independent hotel in other nearby neighborhoods for a surprisingly cheap price. There are many apartment hotels in Dubai and often those go for similar prices to normal rooms. Food also comes in a wide range of prices, and eating cheap local food is quite easy if you look around a bit.

Nearly every hotel is on or within a 1-minute walk of the beach, so you can stay at almost any of them and feel like you are in a desirable and luxurious spot. Most people are happy to just relax on the sand of White Beach, but there are loads of water sports, activities, and excursions available, not to mention excellent wind-surfing on the east coast of the island, which is only 10 minutes away on foot.

More package tourists pour in every year and more hotels for them are built, but there are still many backpacker-style guesthouses around, including some very cheap ones right on the beach if you know where to look. In Calungute and Baga it might feel like prices are only a bit cheaper than in, say, Spain, but if you go to Anjuna or Vagator and find a family-run hotel and eat in local restaurants you’ll be spending a fraction of that. If you are in the mood to tour around,  Mumbai  has great weather during February, and  Delhi  has warm days but cool evenings this time of year.

I am glad India is also one of the places to visit in winter in February.

' src=

This list is a travel agent list. Just be aware of that. There is no mention of San Diego…..hello…remember San Diego on the border with Mexico. Beautiful weather and great prices on hotels in February. Lot’s to do and you can do all sorts of world class things whilst your here. This must be an East Coast written article, because it ignores Hawaii and San Diego, must better places then anywhere in Mexico.

' src=

Some people read an article title and then form an opinion for a comment without reading the article itself. You seem to have also skipped the title. This article is about “cheap” destinations with great weather, which is why San Diego and Hawaii aren’t listed. For the record, I grew up in Orange County, California, and I’ve lived all over the US as well as many places in Europe and Asia for years. Thanks for the helpful comment. -Roger

Hey there… just wanna say I liked your write-up although the places you mentioned which I AM interested in, are too far away for a 5D4N trip (I’m in Singapore) and I don’t feel like going to an Asian country.

15 affordable places to travel in 2024, ranked in a new report.

Want to take an affordable vacation in 2024? You’ve come to the right place. Although travel costs are on the rise this year ( up 3.1% ), it’s still possible to save money in 2024—if you know where to go.

A new travel report from the U.K.’s Post Office —a British-based mail and financial services company — has just unveiled some of the most budget-friendly destinations for 2024. And although the annual report is aimed at U.K. travelers, it’s a helpful list for Americans, too.

By analyzing currency strengths, local prices and essential tourist expenses in 40 popular vacation destinations around the globe, the Holiday Money Report 2024 highlights some of the cheapest places to travel. The report ranks the destinations based on a barometer that takes the local price of eight tourist essentials into consideration—including coffee, beer, cola, wine, water, sunscreen, insect repellent and a three-course meal. And while the report doesn’t include factors like hotels and airfare, it helps give a good sense of where your dollars will stretch the furthest.

This is the 18th year that the Post Office has done this report. And the good news: Prices have fallen since last year in 25 spots on the list. (A note that the original report included prices in pounds sterling, which have been converted into dollars here, using the exchange rate on the date of publication of 1.26.)

An aerial view of Hoi An, Vietnam, the most affordable destination to travel in 2024, according to a ... [+] new report.

Leading the list as the cheapest place to travel right now is Hoi An, Vietnam. According to the Post Office report, a total estimated cost of just $64.51 a day for the travel essentials makes this charming gem the ultimate bang-for-your-buck destination that won’t break the bank. Located on the central coast of Vietnam, Hoi An entices visitors with its UNESCO -recognized Ancient Town, a picturesque spot where lantern-lit streets lead to quaint shops and street food stalls. It is also convenient to stunning white-sand beaches—some of the most beautiful in Asia .

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Following closely behind in the second spot is Cape Town, South Africa, where an outlay of $68.48 a day for the essentials promises an unforgettable experience against the backdrop of Table Mountain and pristine coastlines. Here, you can dive into the vibrant culture and indulge in world-class dining (a three-course meal for two people averages less than $44.140) without denting your travel fund.

The coastline of Mombasa, Kenya, with a pair of camels on Diani Beach.

Mombasa, Kenya takes the third spot on the list. This beachfront destination on the east coast of Africa beckons with its white-sand shores, vibrant markets and rich Swahili heritage, offering an immersive experience for travelers seeking both relaxation and cultural exploration.

In a surprising twist, Tokyo, Japan—a bustling metropolis where tradition meets modernity—secures the fourth spot on the list. According to the Post Office, just $74.43 a day is needed for essential tourist purchases. Helping drive this ranking was the cost of a glass of wine (an average of only $4.56) and a bottle of water (averaging 77¢).

The cliffs of the Algarve overlooking the Atlantic Ocean above the Benagil cave in Lagoa, Portug.a

Rounding out the top five is the Algarve in Portugal, which combines culture, history and natural beauty at a fraction of the cost compared to previous years. With its sun-drenched beaches, charming villages and delectable seafood, the Algarve offers an idyllic escape for travelers seeking an affordable yet enriching getaway.

Here are top 15 best-value spots from the 2024 report. You can also download the full Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer for more locations and more details.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Our Moscow tours are land only meaning that you arrange your own air travel to Russia and our expert staff meets you at the airport and handles everything else from there. Rest assured that you will be taken great care of on one of our Moscow tours. Express to Russia has a fully staffed office in Moscow that will help to make your visit fun, informative and unforgettable. Please remember that of all these tours are private and can be adjusted to your taste. You can add, replace or skip some sights; you can add more days to the package or cut the tour short. Our specialists will be glad to help you create the tour of your dreams!

Novodevichy Convent, Moscow

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
