Happy Birthday, Don Trip!

Today, Aug. 20, is the birthday of Memphis' own Don Trip , a talented wordsmith who was named a  XXL Freshman in 2012 . The rapper is now 33.

Raised in Memphis, Don, born Christopher Don Wallace, began rapping at the age of 15. From the outset, Don Trip's bars have been rugged ones about the dimensions of street life, and they continue to be to this day.

After dropping off several mixtapes in the late 2000s, Don Trip jumped into a little bit of auto-biographical detail to release "Letter to My Son," an emotional track about a strained father-son relationship he believed was brought on by his vindictive baby's mother. Using some potent rhyme structures to carry his heartfelt message, Don Trip struck a chord with fans when he dropped off the track back in 2009.

"And your mama's low-down/She's just doing everything to hurt me right now/Why? Cause I don't love her like I used to/So to get back at me, she knows she's gotta use you/And I don't know what else to do/She don't understand that this shit will bruise you too/And now I gotta take the bitch to court, so either way, it's a lose-lose," Trip spits on the track.

Riding the buzz of "Letter to My Son," Trip eventually ended up being signing to Interscope. Around that same time, Don Trip teamed up with fellow Memphis rapper, Starlito, to deliver their first joint project, Step Brothers . Pairing both of their talents for lyricism, the tape was the first in a series that is still going strong to this day . The pair dropped off Step Brothers Three  last spring.

In 2012, Trip, along with acts like Machine Gun Kelly, Iggy Azalea, Future and more as a XXL Freshman, and he's only continued killing it since. With more than 15 solo projects and all the rhyme skill in the world, Don Trip continues to be one of the very best artists Memphis has to offer. Today, we wish him a happy birthday.

Happy Birthday, Don Trip! Take some time to listen to any one of the Step Brothers projects when you get the chance, and when you're done with that, peep his latest album, Christopher , which dropped this past April.

Memphis-based rapper Don Trip shared his profound respect and admiration for pioneering Memphis MC Project Pat in a recent interview with AllHipHop .

Don Trip, known for his in-depth and powerful narratives, dropped a song titled “Project Pat” in 2023, which was included on his Fireworks album.

During the conversation, he spoke candidly about his personal and professional relationship with Project Pat , highlighting how Pat’s consistent positivity and serious demeanor have influenced him and many others within the industry.

“Project Pat is the kind of person that I’ve never seen him in a bad mood,” he said. “I’ve never seen him have to react to something. But you can tell just by how he is on a daily basis that he’s a serious person. And he always embraced me, even when the name Don Trip didn’t mean anything. He always showed love. And even when I see him now, it’s a mutual thing. And my level of respect for Project Pat is astronomical.”

Don Trip also shared the time when he was able to hop on a bill with Project Pat.

“I did a show not too long ago and I wasn’t expecting to run into Project Pat, and he just happened to be there,” he recalled. “He was on the same bill. And even that, just running into him is always a pleasure, and he’s one of them people that, as far as Memphis music. Project Pat is truly a pioneer.”

As the Memphis music scene continues to evolve, Don Trip continues taking the culture into the future. He recently dropped a new album, iHEARTStrippersTrois , in addition to several other projects.

Dad Grass x Free & Easy Batch #002

This limited edition hat is part of the second collaboration between two of the West Coast’s most laid-back brands: Dad Grass and Free & Easy.

This time around, we're mixing it up with our ‘best buds’ for a small batch of choice nugs to commemorate the release of our new Dad Grass Flower .

Y’all seemed to dig the technicolor 80s SoCal trip we took on our  first collaboration  so we decided to keep it going with a blacked-out take on everyone’s favorite long sleeve along with this corduroy version of Free & Easy’s classic “Don’t Trip” Hat.

Famous for their Don’t Trip hat (donned by LeBron and Mac Miller ) and their perfectly washed-down tees, Free & Easy is a nod to their parents' generation of surfers who rode the waves of California’s golden era.

We at Dad Grass share this same fondness for decades past, before things got so fancy and complicated. Remember when grass was just grass and you could smoke a whole joint without freaking out? That’s why we started rolling up our own hemp  joints , to revive the mellow sensibility of the casual smoke.  And, from time to time, we make special collections of merch and apparel to pay tribute to the timeless staples of dad style.

Dad Grass just mellows you out, minus any and all paranoia.

Breaking news, widowed dad should not take girlfriend on annual father-daughter trip, reddit users insist.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Happy family on a road trip in their car

A Reddit user whose girlfriend objected to being left out of his annual father-daughter trip is completely right to exclude her, said other Reddit users and experts who spoke to Fox News Digital.

“AITA for not booking tickets for my [girlfriend] to come on holiday with me and my daughter?” asked Reddit user “Acrobatic-Agent-6532” in a Monday, April 29, post on Reddit’s “Am I the A–hole” (AITA) subreddit.

In the post, the man revealed that his girlfriend was extremely upset with him for planning his annual vacation with his 16-year-old daughter — something he’s done every year since she was born.

“We’ve carried on the tradition since her mother died as a way to remember her (we go to the same place during the same two weeks),” he wrote.

Last year, Acrobatic-Agent-6532 said his girlfriend was “completely fine” about the trip.

“She said she had no issue with it just being me and my daughter and it would be fine again in the future.”

This year, however, things were different.

After he told the girlfriend he’d booked the trip, “she completely freaked out, saying that I was entitled and selfish for not taking her as well.”

The man detailed, “I’ve tried to explain to her that this is a very personal event for me and my daughter ,  but she doesn’t seem to listen and keeps on telling me to book her tickets as well.”

He continued, “I’ve talked to my daughter about it, and she’s said she would rather it be just us two.”

Acrobatic-Agent-6532 said he regularly goes on vacations with the two of them — and that he does not use all of his time off on his daughter.

“Was I wrong for not booking tickets for my [girlfriend]?” he asked.

“Should I book her tickets as well?”

In an email to Fox News Digital, the Reddit poster said he would not be booking his girlfriend a ticket for the trip.

A psychiatrist and social worker told Fox News Digital that it is completely reasonable for Acrobatic-Agent-6532 to want to continue an important tradition with his daughter — and that the trouble he’s going through right now could be a sign of a deeper issue with his relationship.

“The dad has clearly stated the purpose of this trip with his daughter to his current girlfriend, which seems more than appropriate not to include her. Honoring the role of her mother, who has passed away, is very personal and healing for them both,” Lisa Pion-Berlin, ACSW, of California, told Fox News Digital.

Pion-Berlin is CEO of Parents Anonymous, a self-help organization that aims to prevent child abuse .

These trips do not lessen or diminish the relationship between Acrobatic-Agent-6532 and his girlfriend, said Pion-Berlin.

A family roasting marshmallows by a fire pit in the forest near their country house

The girlfriend’s “negative reaction this year versus previously should be explored so that the air can be cleared, and everyone can understand each other’s feelings.”

“As a parent, [Acrobatic-Agent-6532] has defined what he needs to support his daughter and that priority is separate from their personal relationship and will not interfere with her developing a relationship with the daughter if this is important to each of them,” she also said.

Dr. Carole Lieberman, a California-based psychiatrist, told Fox News Digital that Acrobatic-Agent-6532 would be wrong to stop his annual tradition — and that his relationship with his girlfriend might be over .

“You may not realize it now, but this father-daughter time is so important to her mental health and is what will keep your daughter away from ‘bad boys’ in the future,” said Lieberman, the author of “Bad Girls: Why Men Love Them & How Good Girls Can Learn Their Secrets”

By taking his daughter on these trips, the father is “modeling what a loving relationship should be by keeping her mother ‘alive’ during these times.”

And while Acrobatic-Agent-6532 is upset by his girlfriend’s insistence on joining the trip, Lieberman said that this should be viewed positively.

“It has opened your eyes to the true character of your girlfriend,” said Lieberman.

Reddit users largely agreed that it was completely fine for Acrobatic-Agent-6532 to have his annual trip with his daughter.

On the AITA subreddit, people can reply to posts and indicate the poster is “NTA” (“Not the A–hole”), “YTA” (“You’re the A–hole”), “NAH” (“No A–holes Here”) or “ESH” (“Everyone Sucks Here”).

Users can “upvote” responses they think are helpful and “downvote” ones that are not.

“Your [girlfriend] is off her rocker,” said Reddit user “keephopealive4you” in the top-upvoted comment, addressing the comments directly to the father.

“She is the only entitled and selfish person here! She has already gotten vacations from you. This is a special time for you and your daughter … Your [girlfriend] needs to back off.”

Said a user named “Friendlily,” “You are her only parent left and I’m sure she needs this as much as or more than you.”

The person added that these trips will likely change in the future as the daughter grows up and moves out of the house.

“You also need to take this as the red flag it is with your [girlfriend] and have some serious conversations with her,” said the same commenter.

Meet the Monkeys

August 5, 2022.

don trip dad

I’ve written previously about the hardest working crew at Lake Placid. The Neon Army. The Navy Navy. The Green Machine. The Blue Crew. Rich’s #@*&!es.

aka the table monkeys.

Thanks for reading Road Trip Dad! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.

I was one of them once, and so were my sons.

That was the first job we each had when we got on the Lake Placid Tournament payroll, back sometime around 2006 or so.

Since then, Brian has gone on to work as a ref, a broadcaster, and a data input specialist at LP Summit Classics. Eric has worked his way up to full-time employment with SLV, and me - well, we’ve already discussed my different roles and titles.

Other LP table monkey alums include Kendall Collins (USILA All-American defender and currently assistant coach at Limestone College), Dave Pavlick (JUCO All-American defender at Herkimer and currently head boys’ lacrosse coach at Chenango Forks HS), Sam Miller (head men’s lacrosse coach at SUNY Delhi and SLV independent contractor), and this year we saw HOF player and coach Terry Corcoran join our staff, too. Current table worker Vinnie Lang is not only a member of the Rinker-Ross School of Health Sciences faculty at Trine University; he also served in Operation Desert Storm (beat that !).

As Dr. Seuss would say, “Oh, the places you will go!”

Like most any other year, this year’s table staff is a balance of first year newbies, and experienced veteran scorekeepers. They’re easy to spot - with their blue QR Code t-shirts, their “get out of the box, please” requests, and their perseverance keeping balls on each endline.

LP staff director Rich Gross has become a big fan of Road Trip Dad since we’ve moved over to Substack, and it was his suggestion that I profile this year’s table workers (sometimes I slip and refer to them as field workers). I came up with a couple simple questions, and they didn’t disappoint.

Here, then, are the 2022 table monkeys, in no particular order:

And, for the record, when disaster struck yesterday afternoon on NEAF7, it was once again the quick actions of our beloved table monkeys that helped prevent a tragedy. While one called the emergency phone number that is included in their table packet, the other - who is CPR certified - rushed onto the field to assist the others offering help.

In 2017, it was a few other score table workers whose quick response helped alert the athletic trainers, whose quick actions helped save the life of a player who collapsed after his game.

So go ahead - give them a hard time about keeping their flip charts accurate.

Or, better yet, how about giving them a break and thanking them for their efforts.

“Support your local table monkey.” Got a nice ring to it!

Please consider subscribing to roadtripdad.substack.com to receive weekly RTD pieces via email. It’s free – really! No fine print; no catches.

In the meantime, please drive carefully, everyone. Volunteer. Donate blood. Get vaccinated, and get your boosters. Mask up if asked.

But most importantly, stay safe, stay smart, and stay kind.

Tips and tricks for when your therapist looks like your dad.

avatar

  • Share Story

Tip one: l et yourself be nurtured by this big old man. Tip two: don’t ask him to adopt you.

So, you’ve arrived at your first session with a new therapist. He tells you to make yourself comfortable and you opt for the tweed armchair, hoping it makes you look like a robust, stable person, rather than the couch (too lazy) or the wooden stool in the corner (beyond help).

Once the pleasantries – and agreement on where to send your invoice to – are over, something about him catches your attention. His hairline; jawline; the arch of his brow. That familiar glint in his eye; the smile your mother fell for. You know this man.

You might have seen him every day of your life, or only at weekends, or on annual trips to stay with him and his new family. You might know him from a few photos; the ones you found when you were home alone and went searching.

You could get up and leave, you think, over the sound of your drumming heart; bolt out the door shouting that you’ve left all the taps on at home. Or you could tell him the hour is up. You are paying him here. You make the rules in this room.

But something makes you stay. You notice that every word he says gives you a little jolt of warmth. You wonder if it’s dopamine as you disassociate a little, letting his voice wash over you. He’s speaking with clarity and confidence, telling you about his experience and methodology. You don’t hear much: you’re busy looking for signs. Does he recognise you as his daughter? Is this cosmic coincidence one-way? Is this just a job to him?

don trip dad

After the session, you leave in a golden haze, like you’re strolling home from a new lover’s house. So warmed; so held; so full of loving potential.

You wonder if he’ll show up next time and of course he does; it’s his office. Every week, he’s there waiting; a fresh glass of water, cushion and blanket resting on the armchair. Within just a few sessions, you tell him things you’ve never said out loud before. Buried parts of you feel safe to emerge. They see this man and trust him, so they rush your insides, demanding to be heard all at once. Sometimes you have to stop talking and ask him to help you breathe.

He listens and nods; one set of fingers weaved into the other like kin. He smiles when you need him to; looks concerned when you don’t expect him to. Sometimes he laughs at your jokes. Sometimes he doesn’t, and you feel bereft. He listens, believes you, validates how you feel, and never pushes you to explain yourself more than you’re ready to.

When you cry, the blur of your tears makes him look exactly like your dad, which makes you cry more. This only serves to make the illusion more exact. Part of you is unsure; still flinches when he gives you a certain look. But a bigger part of you knows it is a gift. Use it, you urge yourself. Let yourself be nurtured by this big old man.

As the weekly sessions go on, a tear deep inside you begins restitching itself. You have panic attacks less often, and when you do, you hear his voice in your head, reminding you to breathe. Your nerves, previously exposed, begin to sink into your skin. You go whole weeks without crying. You start to have empathy for people you used to hate. You believe it’s called healing, but it feels too cheesy to ever name it that.

He tells you he has a wife and four children. You picture the six of them curled up together like dormice in a children’s book, braiding their sweet tails over the side of their bed. The dream family you never got to be a part of. Must be nice , you find yourself thinking, teeth clenched, in bed, in work meetings, over coffee with a friend, in the backs of rainy Ubers. Must be nice.

You know it’s ridiculous, but you Google it anyway.

What is the maximum age for adoption in New Zealand?

It’s 19. Even if he wanted to, you’re 10 years too late.

The only role you can imagine him wanting with you (beyond therapist) is a lover, maybe. It’s not what you want, but it wouldn’t be the first time you’ve accepted sex when what you actually wanted was to be nurtured. You have known for a long time that being a lover is the unfathered daughter’s consolation prize. Nothing about this feels strange to you.

The thoughts get more frequent and intense. You consider lingering outside his office just to see  what direction he leaves. You see men in supermarkets with their children and they catch you staring right at them. You imagine scenarios in which you’re left alone together, not as client and therapist, but as two humans. If there was a power cut that locked you in his building; if there was an earthquake…

In clear moments, you feel concerned about these thoughts and convinced that finding a new therapist is the right thing to do. Maybe a woman this time , you think, an old, old woman who looks nothing like your mother. Maybe online sessions with her camera off.

You decide to make your next session with him your final one. You make the decision sitting in your bedroom alone, clutching your body and crying. You don’t want to lose him. Disturbing thoughts about him aside, the therapy is working; you are no longer free-falling through your life.

In the sadness, you have a soothing idea: what if you just told him all of it? What if you told him you think of his kids and cry at how immensely lucky they are? That you can’t stop yourself from thinking up ways to be alone with him outside of your sessions? What if you told him every fucked-up, hideous secret you’ve been harbouring inside you? You know, the sort of things you might only tell your therapist.

You arrive, whole body shaking, and sit on the same tweed chair. It takes you half the session to be able to speak. You stare at the floor. You tell him everything. When you’re done, you feel a surge of grief; sure this is the last time you’ll ever see him.

When you finally look up, his face is smiling gently, warm as ever. He takes off his glasses and you look into his eyes – your eyes, your grandmother’s eyes.

It dawns on you that you’re not in trouble. You have not failed therapy. With all the care of an adult cradling a newborn, he tells you that what you feel is normal. That when we have unstable adults to attach to as babies, the baby inside us will search and search for a secure attachment. Sometimes they find it in a partner, sometimes a trusted friend, and yes, sometimes a therapist. He tells you it’s OK you want a dad; it’s the most natural thing in the world. For a moment, you feel like the most natural thing in the world.

More Reading

He explains the concept of relational therapy; tells you the space between you is where the work will take place. He says you did the exact right thing: to let him see you, all of you. He’s proud of you for it.

I’m glad you feel safe with me, he says, leaning in, but it’s not forever. My work is to help shift the power back to you, so that one day, the need you have for me will be something you can hold and care for on your own. I never want to have more power over you than you have over yourself.

And in that moment, you realise all resemblance to your father is gone.

Don Mancini on the Emotional Reunion in the Chucky Finale: "A Fantasy Lots of Gay Men Have"

It all goes down in a “ghostly ballroom of forgiveness” in the afterlife in the Chucky Season 3 finale.

don trip dad

Chucky is a bastion of gore, mayhem, and twisted humor that shocks and entertains us week after week as the evil doll adds to his kill count. But the television series on SYFY and USA Network has also brought us surprisingly touching moments, and the queer romance between teen heroes Jake Wheeler ( Zackary Arthur ) and Devon Evans (Bjorgvin Arnarson) is a swoon-worthy highlight.

How to Watch

Watch  Chucky  on  SYFY . Stream from the beginning on  Peacock .

SPOILER ALERT: The remainder of this article will discuss the Chucky Season 3 finale.

In the Season 3 finale , Jake traveled to the afterlife in a self-induced near-death experience to convince “ Good Chucky ” to sacrifice himself, thereby causing all of Chucky’s soul fragments to die as well. The plan required Jake to be “medically dead” for five minutes via a drug administered by CIA fixer Warren Pryce (Gil Bellows), but things in the Chuckyverse don’t always work out the way they’re supposed to.

Before finding Chucky, Jake encountered another looming figure: his late, homophobic father , Lucas Wheeler (Devon Sawa), who was angrily smashing up Luke’s doll sculpture from Season 1 with a baseball bat. The father and son had a supernatural reunion fraught with emotions — a scene that show creator Don Mancini and Sawa both described as “beautiful” in a recent interview with SYFY WIRE .

“I love those scenes. I thought that it was ultimately really beautiful,” Mancini said. “Because I think that that’s a fantasy that lots of gay men have about a reconciliation with their dead fathers, who, you know, didn't treat them so well. I thought they both played it so beautifully.”

Referring to actors Arthur and Sawa, he added: “That moment in the ballroom, in the ghostly ballroom of forgiveness."

When Jake reached “the other side” and encountered his dad’s ghost, he immediately apologized for electrocuting him (even though it was Chucky’s fault).

“You wanted me dead. You thought about it every day. Admit it,” yelled his dad, Lucas.

“Only after you started hitting me,” responded Jake.

“I was your father, Jake. It was my responsibility to correct you when you deserve it,” he said menacingly.

Flabbergasted, Jake responded, “I deserve it? Just cause I’m gay?” which prompted Lucas to lunge at him with the bat. Luckily, he missed and hit a tray of creepy doll heads instead.

As Jake runs in terror from his raging father, the two end up in a ballroom of ghostly dancers, waltzing around oblivious to their confrontation. After downing a bottle of liquor (offered by Brad Dourif 's Charles Lee Ray posing as a butler), Lucas began to get physically aggressive and jabbed Jake in the chest with the bat. Just when viewers think the worst will happen, Jake takes the high road and spits out, “I forgive you!” which stops Lucas in his tracks.

“I know you were doing the best you could. I know you loved me. And I love you too, Dad,” Jake said through tears. As the father and son embrace, Lucas whispered into his son’s ear, “You’re still gonna fail. He’s much more dangerous here,” referring to our little killer doll friend's new ghost form.

What did actor Devon Sawa say about playing opposite Zach Arthur in the Finale?

Lucas Wheeler stands on Chucky Episode 308.

“He crushed it,” enthused Sawa about 17-year-old Arthur who pulled off the powerful scene that will have audiences reaching for the tissues. “He was so focused and so into what he had to do for that back half [of the season]. And he absolutely killed it.”

The Chucky Cast Marvel at Working With Brad Dourif

Sawa continued, “You know, coming from being a young actor, you could see that he's getting into that artist stage of his career and he would take moments before, and he would stay focused. It was a beautiful thing for me to see,” he said.

As for his own ghostly role, Sawa admitted it was “a little bit of closure” for Lucas, too. For some characters, it takes more than one lifetime to evolve.

Throughout all three seasons, Chucky managed to hit all the right notes of horror, murder, humor — and provided a much-needed inclusive experience on screen as well.

Tiger Woods says his daughter Sam feels like ‘golf took Daddy away from her’

Tiger Woods and his daughter, Sam Woods

Tiger Woods understands why golf isn’t his daughter Sam’s cup of tee.

“She has … a negative connotation to the game, because when she was growing up, golf took Daddy away from her,” Woods told TODAY’s Carson Daly on May 1. “I had to leave, and I’d be gone for weeks.”

“So we developed our own relationship, our own rapport, outside of golf,” he continued. “Meanwhile, my son (Charlie) and I do everything golf related.”

Charlie, 15, who is making a name for himself in the world of golf, did not advance in a  U.S. Open qualifying event in April .

Woods said Charlie usually listens to his playing tips, but added that lately, there’s been “some pushback.”

“He’s 15 years old,” Woods said. “It’s what happens — it’s what teenagers go through. They’re trying to find their own place in the world.”

Tiger Woods and his daughter Sam

Woods shares Sam, 16, and Charlie with his ex-wife, Elin Nordegren. The former couple were married for nearly six years before splitting in 2010.

While chatting with Carson, Woods also opened up about why he wears red on Sundays and on the final day of tournaments. It’s a tradition that started when Woods was a teenager and it comes from his mother, Kultida Woods.

“My mom thought, being born a Capricorn, that red was my power color,” Woods explained.

As luck would have it, Woods ended up winning some junior golf tournaments in red. When he switched to a blue shirt, he lost — proving that mom is always right!

“It’s a nice little tie to mom,” Woods told Daly of his red ritual.

Woods’ father, Earl, died in 2006 at at the age of 74.

“I wish my dad could have met Charlie. I wish Charlie could have met my dad,” Woods said. “They would have loved each other.”

Woods noted that he feels Earl is always with him, especially when he’s being a dad to Charlie and Sam.

“It’s amazing how many things I say to my kids that came from him,” Woods said. “I’m so happy he was a part of my life and that I get to pass on some of stuff that is in me (because) of him.”
