  • 355denises 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles FUN and informative …take the kids ! It was a rainy day on our travels so decided to go underground on this tour. So glad we did! This tour is very interesting, well organized and structured and a lot of FUN! Yes, fun! There is a little train ride into the mine, 2 slides and a short boat ride in the mine. Stops along the way included good detail on the history of slat mining, but done in an engaging way. This is a great tour for kids! There were several on our tour and they loved it. Highly recommend this one Read more Written October 21, 2022
  • Cruiser435542 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Error in booking system - reservation failed I booked a timeslot for the salt mines via TripAdvisor, but when I arrived after 2 hours traffic jam I was told that there was no reservation on this time for me (group of 9 people). Apparently there is no link between timeslot reservation TripAdvisor and the Salt Mines. In total the tickets were 150 euro, and there was no option to get my money back. This was very frustrating. • 51georgk 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great place to visit A fantastic experience for the whole family. We loved the train rides and the slides down into the mountain. There is some fast walking involved, a bit of history and a romantic crossing of a salt lake, all underground. Read more Written November 18, 2019
  • ungerchristy 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Really fun tour, but beware this does not include transport! Fun visit and change from museums and palaces. The tour is closer to two hours. You first put on a coat and pants to protect your clothes [although I didn't see where they would get very dirty], then everyone straddles what looks like a bench on rails that takes you down about 100 meters onto the mine. There is a fair amount of walking then on uneven ground, which was tricky for my older mom who came along. Very interesting seeing the conditions under which the miners had to work, and where you table salt actually comes from. There are slides that take you down even further I to the mines, kids and adults alike loved them. There is also a brief boat ride across an underground salt lake. Overall it was really fun and we learned alot. My only warning, we spent about 35 euros each way taking a cab because public transit would have taken about an hour and a half each way. If you dont have a car, you may want to buy from the group that also provides transit from downtown Salzburg. You also get this cute little bit of table salt at the end. We had reserved tour to the eagle's nest for the 23 of May from salzburg, but it was cancelled because the "weather" and they say we can book it for next day 24, so instead of going to Munich we stayed one day more in salzburg, cancelling our other activities in Munich. So when we arrived next day to meeting point...they said is cancelled too!!!! That everyday its close one day more....as they dont care about your plans or nothing at all they just keep Booking people and cancelling the same day if the activity...may be one day it works and they can bring you up the mountains. • Cheryllai 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Terrible experience I took the day tour to Salzburg today. The guided tour is just a brief orientation. The tour guide mentioned waiting in front the garden after 15mins. I told her I going to the washroom and when I come out she left and it is not even 15mins yet. I have to run to look for her. Secondly, she talk so soft with such a huge group, I have to stand just next to her to listen to what she talking. The most disappointing is, she left me in Salzburg!!! The tour bus left without me. I asked her for emergency contact number before the tour start and she said unfortunately they doesn’t have it. I reach the meet up point 2 minute late due to unfamiliarity and the meet up point is at a small alley. I saw the bus right in front of me and just drive off right in front of me. This can be prevented if the tour guide did the head count or at least give us the emergency contact details. I can just call and ask the bus to stop for just 10 seconds and I will not miss it. I tried to search for the contact in their website also is not available. I end up have to pay 39 euro myself to take the tram and train back to Munich. Real disappointment. • JosephVSiry 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles This is not for the faint of stamina! The Salt Mines in Hallstadt, by comparison, are easier to access and truly enjoy (especially for families. But the Ice Caves are a strenuous hike and then once inside the temperature drops and 700 or more stairs await the visitor. So prepare with layered clothing, good hiking shoes and stop for a bite to eat or drink at the end of the gondola lift that takes you up to the hiking trail that leads through snow shed to the Ice Caves. Wear warm stockings! Read more Written November 15, 2018

But it was indeed a pleasure - nice atmosphere, a great friendly guide providing English explanations, two funny rides on wooded slides. The waiting time to buy tickets and to enter the mines was totally OK. The exhibitions at the stops were interesting and easily understandable. • Mark P 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Better to catch train from Munich We started this tour 15 mins behind schedule as some people had forgotten their passports and accident on the road delayed us an hour to destination so we got about two hours in Salzburg much more time was needed some people opted to catch the train back to spend more time I wish we had got the train both ways and had a full day in this amazing city. Gray line wastes time by taking you to another location for a river cruise we opted out of that and walked around the town on the other side had an ice cream and beer I’m glad we did that over the river cruise from other people not much was gained but all agreed we would have preferred hours more in Salzburg. Save your money and catch the train direct For feedback for grayline I would just suggest the drive there and back no need to do other location it’s not worth the time lost in Salzburg Read more Written August 11, 2018

Berchtesgaden and the Eagles Nest

A day in the magical bavarian alps.

Nestled into the mountains in the remote southeast corner of Germany, Berchtesgaden offers many attractions and activities. At the top of the list is the historic Eagles Nest mountaintop house; it was built by the Nazi party as a place for Hitler to impress visiting dignitaries. This ‘tea house’ is now a restaurant and the mountaintop views of the splendid alpine landscape are the highlight of the trip. History buffs can also visit the NS Documentation Center at the bus base station. There are two other true highlights in Berchtesgaden; the easiest to combine with the Eagles Nest is the fantastic salt mine, which has been in operation for over 500 years. The other is an electric boat ride on the placid and deep Königsee, which is the heart of a national park.

We have several great options for a Bavarian lunch, depending on the afternoon activity.

At the salt mine, a straddle train takes you 1.3 km (0.8 mi) into the heart of the operations. It is still a working mine; the tour includes a couple of slides, a flatboat ride on a cave lake, and an interactive learning center. The Königssee is an amazing alpine lake that is over 600 ft deep with crystal clear water. All the boats are electric, and they take you out to a small peninsula with a church and a beer garden. The NS Documentation Center has been recently renovated and expanded. Besides presenting the history of the Nazi presence in Obersalzberg, the extensive bunker system is fascinating.

Berchtesgaden is  only 20km away from Salzburg and easy to combine on a multi-day trip.

“WHITE GOLD” – A FUNNY AND EXCITING JOURNEY BACK IN HISTORY

This tour takes you to one of the world’s oldest salt mines accessible for visitors at Dürrnberg mountain. The “white gold” mined there played a crucial role in the history of Salzburg and far beyond. It provided almost limitless riches for the prince archbishops to fulfil their urbanistic dreams which are manifested until present days in Salzburg’s baroque magnificence.

Donning a traditional miner’s cloths, using a small miner’s train and sliding down smoothly polished wooden slides you will go down level by level and enter not only the mysteries of a world far inside the mountain. You will also travel back in time for ages. A miner will guide you vividly explaining about the history as well as telling exciting legendary tales like the one of the “Man in the Salt”. A highlight will be the raft trip across the subterranean salt lake.

With fun and excitement you will discover the history of the “white gold” hidden for millions of years.

“EAGLE’S NEST + BERCHTESGADEN”

After the salt mines we will cross the Austrian border to Bavaria (Germany). This tour is a package of superlatives. This tour goes to the Bavarian mountanis and Obersalzberg with Eagle’s Nest. The road up to Eagle’s Nest is a milestone in the history of road construction in alpine regions and unique in the world.Via a tunnel you then get to the brass elevator which takes you inside the mountain straight up 124 m in only 42 seconds. At 1834 m (6017 ft) above sea level you will have a breathtaking panoramic view (with fine weather up to 200 km!).

“Eagles Nest” itself is an architectural master piece with some meters thick base walls situated on a ridge on top of the Kehlstein mountain. It was part of the Obersalzberg military complex where Hitler frequently met foreign and domestic officials. Thus it is inseparably linked with World War II and its history. Now it is used as a restaurant.

You can reflect on the beauty and magnificence or the historical importance of all you have seen on the way back through the picturesque countryside. If time allows we even will do a stop at  Berchtesgaden town.

Eagle’s Nest is open from approx. the beginning of May until approx. 20th October (weather depending).

Alternatively Obersalzberg Docoumentation Centre can be visited. A visit to the Documentation Centre is not recommended for children under the age of 12.

Note: Salt Mine and Eagle’s Nest Entrance fees not included.

Eagle‘s Nest Historical Tours

All About our private Eagle’s Nest Historical Tour

Recommended by the major travel guidebooks guidebooks including rick steves, what’s so special about this tour.

Created by David and Christine Harper in 1990, this original and comprehensive tour, offered in English only, covers the Eagle’s Nest, as well as Hitler’s former HQs compound and includes a visit to the site of Hitler’s former home, the Berghof (now a ruin). This history-intensive tour is conducted by professional guides who are accredited in Third Reich / WWII history and whose mother tongue is English. They conduct the tour in an objective and comprehensive manner, making the history of the area easily understandable to all.

What is the “Eagle’s Nest Historical Tour”?

Our private, 3,5 – 4-hour, educational, 3-part tour emphasizes the historical significance of the whole mountain, not just the Eagle’s Nest teahouse.

1. Eagle’s Nest

You will board a specially equipped mountain bus for a breathtaking drive up the 6.5 km (4 mile) road with its 27% incline to a high mountain parking lot, just below the ‘Eagle’s Nest’. The original brass-lined elevator will then transport you up through the heart of Kehlstein mountain straight into the building itself. After an in-depth tour of the Eagle’s Nest (now a restaurant) you’ll have some free time to enjoy the views or refreshments.

2. Hitler’s Headquarters Compound

Your guide will take you on a driving tour around Obersalzberg, a small mountain community above Berchtesgaden. Here the history of the area’s takeover by the National Socialist Party and the transformation of the mountain into Hitler’s Southern Headquarters will be recounted. Numerous original buildings or sites where structures once stood will be pointed out and explained with the help of photographs.

3. Site of Hitler’s Former Home

Spending well over one-fourth of his twelve years in power at his “ Berghof ,” as the estate was named, the National Socialist Party’s effective  propaganda apparatus made use of Hitler’s move to the Obersalzberg mountain to present him as a man close to nature and whose Wahlheimat (chosen homeland) was Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps.

On the one hand, the repeated focus on the Führer’s presence on the mountain lent him the German roots that he did not possess, on the other, it created an image of Germany’s future leader as a man living close to the common people in an idyllic alpine countryside. Hitler and his home on the Obersalzberg provided a subsequent mass-merchandizing of the politician as an allegedly friendly and hospitable man who made time to receive and welcome hordes of German admirers and followers.

Photos of these large pilgrimage-like events, as well as postcards and picture-books of Hitler relaxing with and entertaining his associates such as Goebbels, Göring, Speer and Bormann, were widely distributed in an effort to create a Hitler myth. This “superstar” spotlighting was extraordinarily successful in contributing to Hitler’s popularity both before and after his rise to power.

However, it was also at this alpine retreat – the Berghof – that many of Hitler’s sinister plans were forged, leading to war and genocide. Though the building itself was destroyed by bombing and later demolished, our guides, with the help of photographs, recreate the Berghof’s former appearance and offer an in-depth narrative to outline the significant role Hitler’s former estate played in world history.

Times & Prices

The Eagle’s Nest Historical Tour can be booked, depending on availability, at either 8:30 a.m. or at 1:00 p.m. The meeting point for those arriving by car is Eagle’s Nest Historical Tours, located above the Berggasthof Obersalzberg Restaurant (next to Parking 1) at Obersalzberg (Salzbergstrasse 41) in Berchterchtesgaden (Germany). The tour is offered, on request and depending on availability, when the Eagle’s Nest is open, (usually from mid-May through October, weather permitting) and lasts approximately 3,5 to 4 hours. The price of the tour in 2024 is 330 € for private parties of up to six participants. The price includes our transportation around Obersalzberg and the half-day of professional guiding but does not include the Eagle’s Nest mountain bus (the price in 2023 was 30,80 € per person).

Due to the intense historical focus of this tour we do not recommend booking this tour if you have children under 8 years of age. We, as parents, find that the four-hour history-intensive tour that we offer is tough on a young child’s patience. The Eagle’s Nest can also be visited without our guided tour (see below).

How much walking is involved?

– Walk through tunnel (406 ft / 124m) for elevator ride into the Eagle’s Nest – Tour of building (about 20 steps)

Limited Mobility and Wheelchair Access

For those with limited mobility we can tailor the program to a slower pace. The Eagle’s Nest mountain buses have wheelchair ramps, however up at the Eagle’s Nest our tour participants need to go down two different flights of stairs to get into the main rooms of the building and climb back up them as well.

For those who do not feel this tour is for them or if our tour is sold out for the date you need, an alternative would be to visit the sites on you own. You simply take the Eagle’s Nest mountain bus from the Eagle’s Nest bus departure point (address: Salzbergstr. 43, Berchtesgaden, Germany). Buses depart every 25 minutes and you do not require an advance reservation.

The Eagle's Nest

Reopens may 16th 2024 | 11:00 .

Attention: No pedestrians on the road allowed!

Historic lookout point high above Berchtesgaden

The Eagle’s Nest is located above Berchtesgaden at an elevation of 1,834 meters above sea level. Its history is inseparably linked to that of the Obersalzberg. Between 1933 and 1945, it was the second most important center of power of the Nazi dictatorship, aft er Berlin, where decisions were made about persecution, war, and genocide. Built in 1937/38, the Tea House was intended to serve as place of political representation, away from public view, and leave guests awestruck. Aft er the bus ride up a steep mountain road, a passageway leads through a tunnel to an elevator which then carries guests up about 124 meters directly into the Tea House. There, you are greeted by a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountain ranges. In reality, the signifi cance of this house during the Nazi era was minimal. Hitler rarely went up there to receive diplomats or other foreign guests. Far more oft en, it was the Nazi entourage which gathered at the Obersalzberg for recreation and private celebrations.

Since 1952, the building has been used as a mountain guesthouse and has become a popular excursion destination. The original construction has largely been preserved, whilst almost all other buildings on the Obersalzberg from the Nazi era have since disappeared. An exhibition informs visitors about the history of the Eagle’s Nest and its connection to Hitler and the Obersalzberg. Because boulders on the cliff s above the Kehlstein road break loose due to ice and snow during the winter months, the mountainsides are „cleaned“ every spring to protect buses  from falling rocks. In addition, a total of 285 meters of protective fences have been erected. Thanks to such measures, there have been no incidents since 1952.

The Eagle's Nest

A Panoramic view that will take your breath away - a trip to the Kehlstienhaus will impress your entire family

Your Kehlstein Experience: To enjoy your Eagle’s Nest experience to the full, schedule your visit between May and October, and allow plenty of time. The ride on the special bus takes about 15 minutes in either direction. Food and drinks are served at the Eagle’s Nest. Plan to spend at least 20 minutes exploring the exhibition and take a short five-minute walk from the sun terrace to see the summit cross. If you‘re interested in a full walking tour of the Kehlstein, allow around one and a half hours and wear sturdy shoes.

Exhibition about the History of the Eagle’s Nest

The exhibition of the Institute for Contemporary History on the sun-terrace presents valuable information. Historical photographs and accompanying texts provide fascinating insights into the post-1933 transformation of the Obersalzberg into an exclusive off -limits area for the “Führer”, construction of the Kehlstein road a nd Eagle’s Nest in the years 1937/38, and tourist use from 1945 to the present. The exhibition aims to encourage visitors to engage more deeply with the history of the Obersalzberg.

Eagle’s Nest Tour in Berchtesgaden, Bavaria

The Eagle’s Nest Tour takes the route from Mirabell Square in Salzburg via the Alpenstraße to neighboring Bavaria and finally to the Obersalzberg. Upon arrival, you change to specifically equipped busses that take you up the 6.5km (4 miles) long and 4m (12ft) wide road with a gradient of 22%. The last stretch to the Eagle’s Nest consists of a 124m (406ft) long tunnel through solid rock and a sumptuously decorated elevator, which takes 41 seconds to go up the 124m (406ft) to the interior of the Eagle’s Nest.

Enjoy the striking views of the Alps from the Eagle’s Nest plateau at 1,834 m (406 ft) elevation. Discover alpine flora and fauna and enjoy the view at the summit cross, close by.

Before we get back on route to Salzburg, we stop at Berchtesgaden where you get the chance to explore this picturesque town.

An architectural masterpiece

The road leading to the Eagle’s Nest is a feat of architectural mastery. It was blasted into the solid rock of the mountain over a period of only 13 months. The elevation difference of 800m (2625ft) is covered with only a single switchback and 5 tunnels. The design of this road is unique around the world.

Eagle‘s Nest under National Socialism

Construction of the Eagle’s Nest with its metre-thick foundation walls was finished after only 13 months in 1938. It was one of the most elaborate construction projects during the Third Reich. The building is located on a spur just beneath the summit of Kehlstein Mountain at an elevation of 1,834m (6017ft).

Initially, the Eagle’s Nest was intended to fulfill representational purposes and was a gift to Adolf Hitler for his 50 th  birthday. Hitler however visited the Eagle’s Nest only a few times.

Except for the Eagle’s Nest, only few “authentic” buildings of the Third Reich are preserved to this day. The Eagle’s Nest was not hit during the airstrike on 25 th April 1945 and still exists in its original form today.

Its name was coined by a French diplomat who supposedly gave the building the nickname “Eagle’s Nest”.

Today, the building is used as a mountain inn. The restaurant boasts a unique panoramic view of the Berchtesgaden mountains and the area around Salzburg. Additionally, it is a reminder of the horrors and human abysses of the Nazi dictatorship under Adolf Hitler.

Why was the Eagle’s Nest built?

The Eagle's Nest was built as a gift to Adolf Hitler for his 50th birthday, intended to serve as a prestigious retreat and a place to entertain dignitaries and state guests. Funded by the Nazi Party, its construction was part of a larger plan to consolidate power by creating monumental structures that reflected the regime's strength and Hitler's personal dominance. Despite its grand design and strategic location atop the Kehlstein mountain in the Bavarian Alps, Hitler seldom visited the site, reportedly due to his discomfort with heights. Today, it stands as a reminder of a dark period in history, attracting visitors from around the world as a museum and educational site.

Adolf Hitler made several visits to the Eagle's Nest throughout his tenure as the head of National Socialist Germany. This site was presented to Hitler by the NSDAP on the occasion of his 50th birthday and functioned as a distinguished venue for hosting state guests. Primarily, Hitler utilized the Eagle's Nest for relaxation and confidential discussions with his inner circle. It is documented that he commemorated his birthdays at this location and deliberated on significant political matters.

It is important to note that the Eagle’s Nest is not directly linked to the atrocities of World War II or the Holocaust. It was rather a place for Hitler to relax and discuss political matters away from the Berlin seat of government.
