How to Travel with Makeup and Skincare: 12 Dos and Don'ts

travel size beauty routine

@calpak / Instagram

Preparing your makeup for traveling is not an endeavor to be taken lightly. After all, with TSA regulations and baggage handlers who don't care that you have a fragile, limited-edition makeup palette in your suitcase, it's a rather harrowing experience for your beauty products. Okay, so we're being slightly hyperbolic. Packing a travel makeup bag isn't exactly a quest on par with throwing the One Ring into the fires of Mount Doom, but it can be tricky. Should you pack that eyeshadow you've never worn before but could suddenly be struck with a need for? What's the best way to travel with a liquid foundation? And seriously, when will we learn how to pack makeup for a flight?

To answer these questions (and more), we turned to celebrity makeup artists Mary Irwin, Gabriel De Santino, and Jamie Greenberg.

Meet the Expert

  • Mary Irwin is a celebrity makeup artist based in New York City and the co-founder of The Makeup Standard .
  • Gabriel De Santino is a makeup artist and founder of Gabriel Cosmetics .
  • Jamie Greenberg is a Los Angeles-based celebrity makeup artist.

Invest in a Padded Makeup Bag

According to Irwin, investing in a padded makeup bag like the Away Large Toiletry Bag ($75), which will help keep all of your precious products safe. Also, when packing your carry-on, she says to put the makeup bag in the middle of your case and surround it with soft items (like clothing). "This assures that it's well-padded and you won't arrive with an explosion of eyeshadow," she says.

Greenberg concurs, saying a padded bag "will protect all of your palettes, lipsticks and other delicate (and often expensive) makeup products, so they don’t break while in transit."

Save Space By Packing Palettes

" When traveling, pack palettes [versus single eyeshadow pans] to save space and give you options for both day and night looks," says Irwin. Sigma Beauty's Ritzy Eyeshadow Palette ($25) hits all the notes—a mix of mattes, shimmers, and metallics allows you to build multiple looks without taking up a ton of space in your bag. And, if you're a frequent traveler, peep the brand's On-The-Go Eyeshadow Palette Set ($87), which contains every color you could possibly need (because let's be real, we need options).

Customize With Magnetic Palettes

Traveling with palettes only makes sense if you know you're going to be using all of the shades. If you'd rather pick and choose which shades to travel with, Irwin suggests using a magnetic palette that you can customize yourself. Try The Pro Palette ($25)—you can build and refill with the exact pans you'd like (translation: you won't be stuck with colors you won't use).

Always Pack Travel-Sized Products in a Carry-On

De Santino has some sound advice when it comes to packing your liquids: Always use a carry-on. "I always like to keep my makeup and skincare in my carry-on, so I stick to solids and travel sizes for all liquids. You'll be able to retouch before you de-board the plane, and worst-case scenario, if your luggage gets lost, at least you'll still be able to wash your face and throw some makeup on to feel a little better," he says.

Irwin agrees, adding that makeup products are delicate and baggage handlers tend to want to make a 50-yard pass with your suitcase. "Protect your makeup investment and make sure it gets there with you," she says.

Pack Multipurpose Products

"I like to use traveling as an excuse to streamline and stick to crossover products, like my   Multi-Pots and Gabriel Cream Highlighter ($21), which can be used on eyes, cheeks, and lips," he says. Packing products that don't require the use of brushes is also a good idea not only for space purposes, but this will also preserve the life of your brushes, as being cramped up in travel bags is not ideal.

Pre-Plan Your Makeup Looks

That baby blue liquid liner you've been meaning to test for the last year? It likely has no space in your travel makeup bag. Before you pack, De Santino suggests actually planning out your looks and assess what actually needs to come with you. That being said, this doesn't mean you can't have fun with your makeup looks while abroad. For example, if you know feathery brows are on the horizon, be smart about your picks: a pack a dual-sided brow product like Kevyn Aucoin True Feather Brow Marker Gel Duo ($32), which will set your brows in place on no-makeup makeup days and help you achieve the fluffy brow trend on more adventurous days.

Use Refillable Travel Containers

If you'd rather remain loyal to your beauty products (versus going with the unknown at a hotel), investing in leak-proof travel containers is a safe bet. There's nothing this one from Palette by Pak ($39) can't store—from liquids and oils to creams and even your face powder, this five-piece container lets you bring your favorites on the go.

DIY Your Travel Containers With a Contact Lens Case

Rather DIY it? De Santino says to put your lotions, serums, and any other liquids, like foundation, into a contact lens cases. "They look tiny but can hold a surprisingly large amount of product and seal up really well, so you don't have to worry about spills in your bag," he says.

Protect Your Powder Compacts With a Cotton Pad

"If traveling with powder compacts, ensure they arrive intact by placing a cotton pad (or, if you still have the puff that came with it) inside and pack on the top of your makeup bag. Pad the top of your bag with additional cotton pad for extra cushion," De Santino says.

Preserve Your Looks With a Makeup Refresher Spray

Travel schedules are busy and sometimes hectic, so it's helpful to have something on hand to refresh your makeup when you're running from A to B. Too Faced's Travel Size Hangover 3-in-1 Replenishing Primer & Setting Spray ($18) spray hydrates and brightens both bare skin and foundation whenever the jet lag kicks in, as well as sets makeup to keep it in place, no matter what's on your itinerary. (Not to mention, it's the perfect pick-me-up on the airplane.)

Invest in Multi-Purpose Products

"Multitasking products are my absolute favorite for traveling," says Greenberg. "Ultimately, you’ll have less to pack and more room for other essentials, or souvenirs to bring home from your travels." Greenberg recommends a combination tinted moisturizer-SPF product like Younique's BARE·YOU BB Tinted Moisturizer+ SPF 30 ($46). "It's perfect for when you are on the go. Your skin is protected with a SPF 30 mineral zinc sunscreen, plus it is tinted, so it gives a more even-toned appearance," she says. "I also love it because the formula adds an added boost of moisture, with ceramides that hydrate skin and reduce trans-epidermal water loss."

Categorize Your Products

One surefire way to cut back on the number of products you pack (and therefore keep the essentials safe while in transit)? Pack in categories. "Separate your makeup by skin, face, eyes, lips," Greenberg says. "Then try to reduce one product per category, to help save space."

Travel + Leisure / Daisy Rodriguez

It can be hard enough to find a skincare regime that works for you in general, let alone one that you can travel with. Between airport regulations on what you can and can’t pack to trying to preserve as much space in your toiletry bag as possible, curating a travel skincare routine can be challenging, but not impossible. That’s why we tapped the experts on the subject, a.k.a. licensed dermatologists and aestheticians, to share some insight on what’s worth packing and leaving at home to get your routine ready for travel.

Complete with an sunscreen that can do double duty and a facial cleansing bar that’ll not only cleanse, but control puffiness from long flights, this list features the 11 best skincare and beauty picks, hand-selected by dermatologists themselves. Better yet, prices start at just $7, so curating the perfect travel skincare stash is just a budget-friendly scroll away.

Carbon Theory Labs Vitamin C and Caffeine Facial Cleansing Bar

Dr. Nava Greenfield is a New York City-based board-certified dermatologist that recommends travelers to “prioritize the basics and prescriptions. Don't pack the exfoliators that you use one to two times weekly, don't pack the eye cream that takes up room but only requires one pin drop size when applying.”

As for her go-to skincare product, she loves this vitamin C and caffeine cleansing bar that “works to control the under-eye puffiness that can occur from flights and lack of sleep, and also as an antioxidant cleanser. This comes in a resealable bag, which is perfect for the hotel and then to bring back home to use again for the next trip.”

Ren Skincare Mini Evercalm Global Protection Day Cream

Ren Skincare

Dr. Greenfield also suggests leaving behind your “large fluid moisturizer and cleanser that can't go on the carry-on." She continued, "Skip the morning antioxidant serum that also needs to be checked. Instead, pack travel-sized products that accomplish multiple functions in one.”

So, what does she pack when her skin needs a little extra hydration and nourishment post-flight? Dr. Greenfield told Travel + Leisure that she's a fan of Ren Clean Skincare because of the brand's toxin-free products, which are not only clean for your skin, but also for the planet. Snag this powerful balmy moisturizer, which is formulated with soothing and reparative ingredients to keep your skin relaxed and free of redness ,irritation, and dryness when you're traveling.

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser Travel Size

Although many hotels come equipped with their own toiletries, these products don’t always cater to every skin type or your complexion's unique concerns. In a TikTok video, dermatologist Dr. Andrea Suarez bluntly shared that “hotel toiletries are horrible" and implored her followers to " do yourself a favor and pack a hydrating facial cleanser,” this way you can ensure that you're effectively washing your face without stripping or disturbing your skin barrier.

Her top pick is the incredibly popular and travel-sized Hydrating Facial Cleanser from CeraVe, which is gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin. It features skin barrier-strengthening ceramides and hyaluronic acid to restore moisture after cleansing, so your skin will never feel tight or look red after using it.

Aquaphor Healing Ointment Two-Pack

In that same video, Dr. Suarez also recommended snagging a travel-sized version of Aquaphor to fend away cracked heels, chafing, and, of course, chapped lips. At just a quarter of an ounce, this versatile travel superstar will take you far, and save precious toiletry bag space in the process. Leave your lip balm, foot ointments, and chafing creams at home in lieu of this convenient, effective product. It can also come in handy for minor injuries and sunburns with its healing properties, and even double as a dewy highlighter when applied to your cheekbones.

Murad Multi-Vitamin Clear Coat SPF 50

According to dermatologist Dr. Tia Paul , “It's essential to take care of your skin, considering factors like sun exposure, changes in climate, and environmental stressors.” This is especially true during the warm-weather travel seasons, which is why she wholeheartedly believes that the most important skincare product is sunscreen.

Need help picking a new, do-it-all SPF? Dr. Paul loves the Murad Multi-Vitamin Clear Coat SPF 50 that has a clear, gel-based formula that “doesn't just offer UVA/UVB protection, but it also has antioxidant such as vitamins C, D, E, and F to help prevent the early signs of aging that can be caused by sun damage.”

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Between the stale air of flights and the stress of long travel days, the skin can become incredibly dry and irritated. To keep your skin plump and hydrated, New York-based dermatologist Dr. Jeremy Bauer suggests packing a hyaluronic serum for a daily boost of moisture.

His go-to is the La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum because it “combines various humectants in one product. It helps hydrate and plump the skin with hyaluronic acid, dimethicone and vitamin B5 — the perfect all-in-one serum for your next excursion.”

Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush-On Shield SPF 50

Nurse practitioner and founder of Destination Aesthetics Medical Spa Shawna Chrisman travels a lot for both work and pleasure, and if there’s one thing that you can bet always stays in her travel bag, it's her Colorescience’s Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush-On Shield SPF 50. The genius two-in-one product is both your powder compact and sunscreen with its color-correcting, oil-absorbing, and broad-spectrum SPF 50 technology.

“Even on the airplane your skin can be exposed to sunlight so it’s important to reapply. This powder, all-mineral sunscreen breezes through TSA and goes on easily over my makeup for all-day, on-the-go, reapplication.”

Colorescience Total Eye 3-in-1 Renewal Therapy SPF 35

Chrisman also advocates for travelers to pack products that do more than just one thing, which is why she’s also a fan of the brand's Total Eye Renewal Therapy SPF 35, a three-in-one tinted eye cream that conceals dark circles, reduces puffiness, and protects the sensitive under-eyes from the sun with its SPF 35 formula.

“This product allows me to streamline my eye routine because it is a treatment serum, mineral SPF for the eyes, and concealer all in one product. The cooling applicator feels amazing on tired eyes and it helps depuff and make me look like I got eight hours of rest, even after a red-eye.”

RoC Retinol Anti-Aging Wrinkle Night Serum

Dermatologist Dr. Sejal Shah (otherwise known as the @dermdoctor ) has accrued a massive following on TikTok thanks to his helpful skincare advice and tips. I’m one of his 18 million followers, and I recently came across a video of his where he recommends these genius retinol capsules from RoC that he dubs “perfect for travel.”

He went on to explain that you only need to use one capsule at night and that the formula is packed with incredibly potent anti-aging ingredients (retinol is great for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots, and more). They're also incredibly travel-friendly as well. Snag a pack for half off at Amazon.

Mrsdry Travel Toiletry Bottles

Stocking up on travel-sized versions of your favorite products is undoubtedly convenient if you’re packing for a last-minute trip, but if you want to save money and space, Dr. Shah also urged viewers to purchase travel toiletry bottles or pouches to fill up with their go-to products.

If you have sensitive skin and like to stick to a routine, this is a smart way to get the most out of your trip, and products. Plus, this specific set from Mrsdry is on sale for just $8 today if you want to kickstart curating your perfect travel skincare regime.

Mirabella Defense CC Cream

Licensed aesthetician Serynne Evans Atwell, who is an in-house aesthetician and education lead at Mirabella , recommends paying extra close attention to your skin during transitional seasons and times when it's put under stress (particularly during travel). As such, she recommends packing Mirabella's Defense CC Crème Foundation because it's a true “M.V.P. skincare and makeup essential for pulling double duty while traveling.”

She went on to explain, "Infused with skin-loving ingredients, this multitasking wonder not only perfects and renews the skin's appearance but also provides mineral-based sun protection equivalent to SPF 20, guarding against harmful UV rays. As you apply, vitamin E beads burst onto the skin, imparting a luxurious feel and creamy consistency that blends effortlessly to a natural finish." Other key ingredients include bamboo extract, lavender, avocado oil, and rosemary to soothe, moisturize, and protect the skin, while salicylic acid keeps oil and breakouts at bay.

Few things are more exciting than traveling, especially after almost two years of doing nearly everything from home. Whether you’re heading home to visit your family or escaping the cold weather and fleeing to a sandy beach in the tropics, there’s a certain thrill that comes with packing a bag and getting out of town for a bit. Exciting as it is, though, there are a few aspects of travel that we’d rather do without — and we’re not just talking about long check-in lines, flight delays, and $7 bottles of water at the airport.

Any beauty aficionado can attest to the challenge of picking from your trusty arsenal of skincare and hair-care products that you’ve tailored to your wants and needs. You’ve likely spent years building and curating your beauty routine. So, when faced with TSA’s confining nothing-greater-than-3.4-ounces size restriction, it can often feel like leaving your beloved toiletries behind is the only real option (after all, who wants to try squeezing serums and toners into travel-friendly bottles only to end up sacrificing lots of expensive product?).

Luckily for the current and future globe-trotters among us, though, more beauty brands are offering travel-size versions of their best-selling skincare, hair care, and makeup than ever before — and their adorably miniature sizes are sure to bring a smile to your face. From individually packaged facial wipes and mini serums to petite perfumes and compact hair dryers, here are the travel-friendly beauty products we can’t go anywhere without.

The best travel-size cleanser: Youth to the People Superfood Cleanser

The best travel-size cleanser: Youth to the People Superfood Cleanser

Between the free-flying germs at the airport and the harsh air quality during your flight, traveling can expose skin to some seriously concerning dirt and grime, so it’s important to have a cleanser you can trust to help restore purity and cleanliness when you finally arrive. The consistently popular Superfood Cleanser from industry-favorite brand Youth to the People harnesses the antioxidant powers of kale, spinach, and green tea to prevent buildup in pores and balance your skin’s pH without drying or stripping.

The best travel-size toner: Glow Recipe Mini Watermelon Glow PHA + BHA Pore-Tight Toner

The best travel-size toner: Glow Recipe Mini Watermelon Glow PHA + BHA Pore-Tight Toner

Toner can be a game-changing step in any skincare routine, and going on vacation is hardly a reason to skip it. Fortunately, with this mini version of Glow Recipe’s best-selling Watermelon Glow Toner, you won’t have to. The best travel-size serum: Murad Mini Vitamin C Glycolic Brightening Serum

The best travel-size serum: Murad Mini Vitamin C Glycolic Brightening Serum

This serum from Murad is not only rich with vitamin C, but it’s also formulated with glycolic acid to help the antioxidants penetrate more deeply and phyto luminescent extract to visibly illuminate the skin.

The best travel-size face oil: The Feelist Most Wanted Radiant Facial Oil

The best travel-size face oil: The Feelist Most Wanted Radiant Facial Oil

Although the moisturizer versus facial oil debate is alive and well, we know that the decision between the two really does come down to personal preference. The best-selling oil is deeply hydrating and helps fight blemishes while calming redness and inflammation to leave you with the best glow of your life.

Traveling can dry out skin like almost nothing else, and sometimes it takes more than just your go-to moisturizer to replenish its hydration, which is why the Intense Hydration Gel Mask from onå New York is such a savior. With hyaluronic acid, beta-glucan, and camellia japonica, the sheet mask restores the skin’s moisture barrier and prevents dehydration while enhancing skin elasticity to deliver a visibly plumped and energized complexion.

The star of this show, seaberry oil, is an antioxidant and fatty acid that softens skin and gives this balm its beautiful color. Also formulated with grapeseed oil, olive oil, and vitamin E, Then I Met You Cleansing Balm will undoubtedly leave your skin feeling nourished and radiant.

The best travel-size hair-care set: Oribe #OribeObsessed Set

The best travel-size hair-care set: Oribe #OribeObsessed Set

Many folks skip hair care when packing for a trip, instead settling for whatever generic shampoo and conditioner is at their hotel shower, but your locks shouldn’t have to suffer just because you’re on the road. Instead, reach for the #OribeObsessed Set, which features the brand’s best-selling Gold Lust Repair and Restore Shampoo and Conditioner to help heal damaged hair and protect it from future damage and the Dry Texturizing Spray to build volume and texture while absorbing oil at the source.

The best travel-size dry shampoo: OUAI Mini Super Dry Shampoo

The best travel-size dry shampoo: OUAI Mini Super Dry Shampoo

There are some occasions when washing your hair simply isn’t an option — and then there are others when it is an option but not one that you’re choosing to take. For those times, a good dry shampoo is an absolute must, and this super-absorbent dry shampoo from OUAI is a surefire way to revive hair’s volume and body while leaving it clean and healthy. No one will ever know you didn’t just come straight from a blowout!

The best travel-size hair dryer: GHD Flight Travel Hair Dryer

The best travel-size hair dryer: GHD Flight Travel Hair Dryer

Much like shampoo and conditioner, a hair dryer is often something people think to pack when traveling, instead of opting to save space and leave their hair at the mercy of a subpar hotel hair dryer. But with GHD’s Flight Travel Hair Dryer, you don’t have to sacrifice your hair’s health or valuable real estate in your suitcase. The compact hair dryer is as powerful as it is portable and features an array of speed and temperature settings, dual voltage, and a removable nozzle, and it folds up nicely to fit amongst all your other things.

The best travel-size hairbrush: Drybar Lil’ Lemon Drop Daily Detangler

The best travel-size hairbrush: Drybar Lil’ Lemon Drop Daily Detangler

A hairbrush is something you definitely can’t (and shouldn’t) live without, but the one you use at home will likely take up far more space in your suitcase than it really needs to, which is why we love Drybar’s Lil’ Lemon Drop Daily Detangler. The mini brush is suitable for all hair types and uses flexible bristles to detangle wet or dry hair with ease, and it’s small enough to fit in even your smallest purses.

The best travel-size deodorant: Megababe Rosy Pits Mini

The best travel-size deodorant: Megababe Rosy Pits Mini

There’s a lot of talk about natural deodorants, but if we’re honest with ourselves, we know that none of them seems to do the trick — that is, until Megababe’s Rosy Pits. Instead of using aluminum to block sweat ducts from producing sweat, the antiperspirant helps prevent odor-causing bacteria from forming on the skin without the use of baking soda, alcohol, or parabens. The deodorant goes on smooth and clear and keeps your underarms smelling of roses all day long, and now you can grab the mini size to take it with you on all your travels, near and far.

The best travel-size perfume: Diptyque Do Son Travel Spray

The best travel-size perfume: Diptyque Do Son Travel Spray

Perfume is often left behind when we travel because of the space it takes up in a bag and its non-essential nature, but really, who wouldn’t want to smell their best when on vacation? For the best of both worlds, try the Do Son Travel Spray from beloved fragrance brand Diptyque. The portable bottle is the ideal travel companion, thanks to its compact size and ability to be refilled with any classic Diptyque perfume. But it’s also a traveler itself, with a design that’s inspired by the vintage noticeboards that once appeared in airports and train stations around the world, and you can even customize the bottle with your own name, word, or phrase.

Pack Lightly With These Travel-Sized Products—And Bon Voyage!

Whisking yourself away on holiday is nothing short of mood-boosting, that is, aside from the inherent trials and tribulations that are par for the course with travel, like flight delays and lugging your luggage around. There are some travel mishaps, however, that can be entirely mitigated with proper planning. Having one (or more!) of your favorite toiletries confiscated at security for being greater than 3.4oz, or arriving at your destination only to realize you’ve forgotten an essential skincare or haircare product that won’t be easy to duplicate whilst away, need not be part of your holiday itinerary.

The solve? Stock up on all your essentials in travel sizes that can come with you in your carry-on, and keep the army of mini products in their own travel pouch. That way, whether a spontaneous trip arises, or it’s time to head out for the holiday you’ve been planning for months, you’re ready to go without having to worry or really think about it at all.

From all-in-one skincare and haircare kits that take the guesswork out of packing to carry-on friendly SPFs and petite perfumes , the best travel size beauty products will have you ready to enjoy your trip.

The All-In-Ones

Sometimes, it’s easier to invest in a kit that already has everything you could need. Take the thinking out of packing with Aesop’s Arrival Kit, which will ensure a good shower no matter your location or skincare kits from La Mer and Tata Harper, so there’s no stressing over maintaining a skincare routine while away.

The Carry-On Friendly SPFs

No matter where you’re jetting off to, packing a TSA-compliant SPF is essential. Purchasing SPF at your destination is a waste of time (and often a waste of product when having to throw it away on your way home). From tinted, serum-meets-SPF from Ilia to Vogue editor favorite Supergoop!, these travel-ready picks will help you practice safe sun while you’re seeing the sights.

21 Beauty Products So Good I Bought Them in Travel-Size Too

Caitlin Burnett

While traveling is one of my favorite parts of life,  packing for travel is not. I've always found it particularly stressful as there's so much to think about: the weather, destination, activities I'll be doing, type of hotel bathroom mirror situation I'll be working with… Do I need a blow dryer? The list of questions that go through my head goes on and on.

One thing that has made it significantly less stressful for me (and given me the ability to actually travel with just a carry-on ) is that I've recently stocked up on many of my favorite beauty products in travel-size. This has revolutionized my packing experience —I no longer have to figure out which products are TSA-approved as they're already under the liquid size limit, plus I keep most of them together in my travel cosmetics case, so they're ready to go whenever I am.

Below I've outlined  my can't-leave-home-without products for skin, hair, and body that purchasing in travel-size has changed my life for the better.

Oribe + Dry Texturizing Spray- Travel

I'm not one to use the term "ride or die," but if I were, I would describe this texturizing spray as such. It's the perfect ratio of grit and hold, plus I always get compliments on Oribe's mesmerizing signature scent. I truly wouldn't go on a trip without it.

Oribe + Impermeable Anti-Humidity Hair Spray

Anti-humidity hair spray is a good call in every climate—if there's moisture in the air, it helps keep frizz at bay. If it's on the dry side, this product simply acts as a normal hairspray to keep things in place.

Amika + Perk Up Dry Shampoo

I don't even have to explain why packing dry shampoo is a must. This one smells great and doesn't leave any white residue like so many do.

Oribe + Shampoo for Beautiful Color

I spend a lot of time (and money, TBH) dyeing my hair, so I need to ensure I'm protecting the color even when I'm traveling, and not just any shampoo will do so. That's why I don't go anywhere without this color-protecting shampoo from Oribe—which is my favorite haircare brand if you haven't figured that out already.

Oribe + Conditioner For Beautiful Color

Obviously can't overlook the conditioner either.

Oribe + Mystify Restyle Spray—Travel

Another Oribe product I can't live without is the Restyle Spray because, let's face it, on vacation you're bound to be doing your hair over and over again without washing (okay, I do that in my normal life as well, but you get the point). This magical spray makes my hair feel hydrated and nourished, while also activating yesterday's products and providing heat protection.

Farmacy + Green Clean Makeup Meltaway Cleansing Balm Mini

This is my holy-grail makeup remover—it melts away even stubborn waterproof eyeliner and mascara in one easy swipe. Plus, it's clean so if you're attempting to move towards a non-toxic beauty routine like I am, this is a great addition.

Bioderma + Sensibio H2O

I started double-cleansing per advice from my esthetician a few years ago, and it dramatically changed my skin. Bioderma's Sensibio is my go-to cleansing water for after I wash my face to ensure every speck of dirt and makeup are gone. I simply add a splash to a cotton ball and run it over my face (and am always shocked and horrified to see how much gunk is on there even after my face feels clean). I forgo washing with a cleanser and water in the morning and simply use my Sensibio again before getting ready for the day. This cute travel mini version is a staple in my travel cosmetics bag.

iS Clinical + Pro-Heal Serum Advance Plus

I use this serum every morning before heading out for the day to protect my skin from airborne pollutants while also helping soothe and heal my  perpetually irritated skin . Bonus: The full-size bottle is only one ounce, so you can travel with it no problem.

Caudalie + Vinoperfect Anti Dark Spot Serum

If you haven't tried Caudalie's Radiance Serum, I can't recommend it enough. I find it to be much more effective than any vitamin C serum I've tried as far as skin brightening goes, without any irritation to my sensitive skin. I use this underneath my makeup and even wear it sans makeup when possible because it makes my skin look that glowy—seriously. Sadly it only comes in one size, but thankfully that size is under 3.4 ounces.

M-61 + Hydraboost Moisturizer SPF 30

This two-in-one moisturizer contains hyaluronic acid, vitamin B5, and vitamin E to hydrate the skin, plus SPF 30 so I can skip packing a facial sunscreen and simply rely on this to protect my skin, too.

Drunk Elephant + D-Bronzi Anti-Pollution Sunshine Drops

These are my bronzing secret weapon—I add a few drops to my moisturizer or sunscreen, and they give you an instant boost of natural-looking bronze glow.

Dr. Barbara Sturm + Hydrating Facial Mist

Dr. Sturm's new facial mist is the ultimate multi-tasker—it has hyaluronic acid to give your skin a big boost of moisture whenever you need it. I spray it whenever my skin needs a refresher throughout the day. I also use it as the final step in my makeup routine so you can skip packing your typical setting spray.

Shani Darden + Texture Reform Gentle Resurfacing Serum

As someone with ultra-sensitive skin and rosacea , I've never been able to use a retinol, despite its magical anti-aging properties. That is until I discovered Shani Darden 's texture reform that features a gentle retinol that works to reduce the appearance of sunspots and redness while softening fine lines and wrinkles. I've been using this product twice per week, and it doesn't irritate my skin in the slightest. Luckily you don't need a travel-size version as the full-size is only one fluid ounce—meaning it's already TSA-approved.

M-61 + Powerglow Peel Pads

Another multi-tasking product I'm obsessed with are M-61's Powerglow Peel pads. Containing both glycolic and salicylic acid, vitamin K, antioxidants, chamomile and lavender, these pads help exfoliate and resurface the skin to give you a glow like no other. I use them once a week at night and wake up with clear, radiant skin. My pores are also noticeably smaller and any lines I'm starting to notice are less visible. So instead of packing eight different products to achieve these results, I simply throw one of these pads in my bag and my work here is done.

Laura Mercier + Mediterranean Escape Sunkiss Bronze Veil

This illuminating balm can be used on your face, décolletage, legs, or arms to give skin a dewy glow. This is another one that works double duty as a full-size and travel-size, and I actually throw it in my bag when I go out now for touch-ups.

Fresh + Sugar Advanced Therapy Lip Treatment

If I were to choose one thing to be stranded on a desert island with, it would be Fresh Beauty's Sugar Lip Balm. It's ultra-hydrating and gives just a subtle hint of sheen. I even got my boyfriend hooked on it, despite the sheen factor, because it's that good.

Aesop + Jet Set Kit

I received this kit as a gift and have never been more grateful. The travel-size body wash and lotion have been on heavy rotation recently as they work well and the scent is heavenly.

Le Labo + Eau de Parfum - Thé Noir 29

Le Labo's fragrances need no introduction (and are very self-explanatory on why I would want to travel with them). Blame it on too many traumatic TSA incidents, but carrying around my full-size bottle gives me anxiety, so I prefer to take this 15ml version with me instead.

Fawn Design + The Cosmetics Bag (Large)

I use this bag to carry all of my travel essentials—no mess to worry about.

Slip + Silk Eye Mask

Okay, so this isn't technically a beauty product, but it does help me get my beauty sleep when I travel, so I thought I'd include it (apologies for the dad joke). I truly never leave home without it.

25 Travel-Size Skin-Care Products That Will Make You Wanna Go Somewhere

travel size beauty routine

By Sarah Jacoby

Some people may see needing to pack mini versions of their skin-care products as a challenge. But, for me, it’s an opportunity.

Obviously travel sized skin-care products come with the perks of helping you maintain a solid skin-care regimen while you’re away from your usual products, whether that’s because you’re using smaller versions of the products you already use or because you’re mixing things up while you’re away.

But not only are mini- and travel-sized products great for taking on trips, keeping at your desk, or stashing in a workout bag , they’re also a really nice way to try a product you’ve had your eye on before you invest in a full-sized version. That way you can decide if you like the feel, the scent, and what it does (or doesn’t do) for your skin before spending a little more money.

As someone with sensitive skin and rosacea , I need to be extra careful about what I put on my skin, and mini products give me enough of a chance to get acquainted with a cleanser, serum, or moisturizer without spending a fortune on a fancy new product that may very well irritate my face.

One other excellent perk of shopping for travel sized products is that they often come in sets of things that are meant to work together, like two complementary serums or a cleanser paired with a moisturizer. So, even if you’re just interested in one product, you may find that the combination of everything in the set works especially well.

And you might also be surprised at how long the minis last you. I often find that being forced to use less of the product on my face at a time usually makes me realize how wasteful I can be when I have the luxury of a full-sized product at my disposal.

Here we’ve collected a bunch of our favorite products—including classic drugstore finds and luxury options—in travel-friendly sizes, sample packs, and kits. That way you can treat your skin right no matter where life leads you.

All products featured on SELF are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

How To Take Better Care of Your Skin

The Best Travel Skincare Routine: What Products Do You Need?

Taking care of your skin while traveling can be a challenge considering the changing climates, long flights, and busy schedules, which can all take a toll on its health and appearance.

But, with the right products and a few maintenance tips, you can ensure your complexion remains clear, healthy, and radiant, no matter where you are.

In this guide, I will outline the best travel skincare routine and recommend essential products that are easy to carry and effective in keeping your skin at its best.

From hydrating cleansers to protective sunscreens, let’s explore the best travel skincare routine and what products you mustn’t forget back home.

How Travel Affects Your Skin: Common Issues and Solutions

From the dry air of airplanes to the humidity of exotic destinations, your skin faces a barrage of challenges while traveling.

Here are some common issues and solutions for maintaining healthy skin on your journeys:

Dehydration : High altitudes and recycled airplane air suck the moisture out of your skin, leaving it parched. Carry a hydrating facial mist and apply a hyaluronic acid serum to relieve discomfort and keep the skin hydrated.

Dryness : Traveling to cold and dry destinations can strip your skin of its natural oil and cause dryness. Use a replenishing moisturizer to reinforce your skin barrier and prevent discomfort.

Acne : A change in environment, diet, and pollution in the air while traveling can lead to unwelcome acne flare-ups. Stick to a familiar skincare routine that includes a gentle exfoliant , benzoyl peroxide , or a retinoid to keep pores clear and free of bacteria buildup.

Sunburn : Increased exposure to UV rays without adequate protection can cause immediate and long-term skin damage. To prevent this, apply and reapply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, and consider wearing protective clothing.

Pollution : Traveling to urban destinations can expose the skin to pollutants that dull the complexion, clog pores, and exacerbate texture. Use an antioxidant serum to fight free radical damage and prevent cellular degradation.

Jet Lag : Lack of sleep disrupts the skin’s natural repair cycle, leading to dullness, puffiness, enlarged pores, rough skin texture , and acne. Prioritize sleep when you can and use hydrating eye creams to combat puffiness and dark circles .

7 Skincare Products You Need To Pack For Your Travel Skincare Routine:

Let’s go through each one in more detail and why you need it!

Thermal water mists are a fantastic way to keep your skin clean, hydrated, and refreshed while traveling.

Additionally, by keeping your skin moist, face mists can help the rest of the products in your skincare routine absorb better, improving results.

Best Travel-Friendly Face Mists

Avène – thermal spring water.

The Avene Thermal Spring Water is a light and hydrating mist that helps keep the skin plump and refreshed.

Hydrating Serum

Serums  have a light consistency and a formula packed with active ingredients that can penetrate deeply into the skin and deliver their hydrating and nourishing benefits.

Serums can also be fantastic tools for targeting specific skin concerns, such as inflammation , which can be exacerbated by dryness due to traveling.

Additionally, due to the number of active ingredients in serums, they almost always come in small bottles, making them convenient for traveling.

Best Travel-Friendly Hydrating Serums

Medik8 – hydr8 b5 serum.

Best travel-friendly hydrating serum for oily and acne-prone skin.

The Medik8 Hydr8 B5 Serum is a daily hydrating serum enriched with vitamin B5 and hyaluronic acid, designed to improve skin’s water retention and leave the complexion feeling plump, hydrated, and nourished.

Moisturizers  seal hydration after applying your liquid products and help keep all that moisture in the skin rather than evaporating in the air.

The dry environment on a plane, airport, or a destination can take a toll on your skin, so a nourishing moisturizer is the best way to prevent damage and discomfort such as dryness, irritation, and flaking.

Best Travel-Friendly Moisturizers

La roche-posay – toleriane sensitive fluide.

First Aid Beauty – Ultra Repair Face Moisturizer

Best travel-friendly moisturizer for dry and sensitive skin.

The First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Face Moisturizer is a lightweight, quick-absorbing facial moisturizer that offers immediate hydration, leaving skin silky soft, and smooth.

It’s the best travel-friendly moisturizer for dry and sensitive skin due to its potent formula that provides instant relief and long-term hydration for parched and distressed skin.

Although plane windows can block UVB rays ,  UVAs can still pass through, and given the elevated level, the UV rays can be much more intense at higher altitudes.

Even though pilots and cabin crew are at a higher risk than the average traveler due to prolonged stints in the air, all passengers – especially those in seats next to the windows should take the strength of the sun up there seriously.

It is always important to protect your skin from UV rays , but it is especially a must when you are on a plane or when traveling to hot, sunny destinations.

Best Travel-Friendly Sunscreens

La roche-posay – anthelios aox daily antioxidant serum spf 50.

Best travel-friendly sunscreen for oily and acne-prone skin.

The La Roche-Posay Anthelios AOX Daily Antioxidant Serum SPF 50 is an innovative, all-in-one serum that provides advanced UV protection while visibly improving the appearance of imperfections.

EltaMD – UV Replenish Broad-Spectrum SPF 44

Best travel-friendly sunscreen for dry and sensitive skin.

The EltaMD UV Replenish Broad-Spectrum SPF 44 is a 100% mineral sunscreen formulated to restore moisture to dry, stressed skin while providing robust, broad-spectrum sun protection to prevent cellular damage caused by UV exposure.

Pimple Patches

Getting pimples while traveling is not uncommon, considering your skin is even more exposed to dirt, pollution, and impurities in the air that clog pores and cause bacterial overgrowth.

Therefore, pimple patches can be an effective and convenient way to keep zits at bay while vacationing.

These spot treatments have a multi-pronged approach and absorb the fluid from the pimple while creating a moist environment for faster healing.

Additionally, they provide a physical barrier between external aggressors and an inflamed zit that can accelerate healing and prevent the risk of infections.

Best Travel-Friendly Pimple Patches

Hero cosmetics – mighty patch original.

The Mighty Patch from Hero Cosmetics is a hydrocolloid acne pimple patch that effectively covers zits and blemishes and extracts impurities while preventing infections due to picking.

It’s the best travel-friendly pimple patch due to its compact size and ability to visibly flatten pimples overnight, offering a hassle-free and efficient solution to handle unexpected breakouts during travel.

In addition to parched skin, the low humidity levels in airplane cabins can also cause ultra-dry, chapped lips that can crack and even bleed in severe instances.

To avoid any discomfort, be sure to pack a nourishing lip balm in your carry-on bag.

It takes little to no room and can come in handy in relieving that uncomfortable dry feeling on your lips.

Best Travel-Friendly Lip Balm

Eltamd – uv lip balm sunscreen spf 36.

The EltaMD UV Lip Balm Sunscreen SPF 36 is an ultra-hydrating, creamy lip balm that not only soothes and protects dry, chapped lips but also provides UV protection to prevent lip damage caused by sun exposure.

3 Skincare DOs While Traveling

skincare routine while travelling

Between the dry and dirty cabin air, change in humidity level, lack of sleep, and a spike in travel-induced stress , your skin can become compromised.

Even though skin woes while traveling may ultimately be impossible to prevent, it is still worth trying to avoid as many of them as possible.

So here’s what you should do to prevent unwanted changes in your complexion and keep your skin clear while traveling:

Wash Your Hands Frequently

Washing your hands as much as possible is a crucial travel skincare tip because we tend to touch our faces much more while sitting exhausted at the airport, waiting for a flight.

Additionally, planes and trains are breeding grounds for bacteria, and you definitely want to avoid transferring these pathogens to your skin.

Therefore, to minimize the risk of infections, try to avoid touching your face as much as possible and wash your hands frequently to help keep them clean and free of harmful pathogens.

Stay Hydrated

Traveling, particularly air travel, often exposes your skin to dry environments due to low humidity levels in airplane cabins and the use of air conditioning in airports.

This lack of moisture can lead to dryness, dullness, and even increased sensitivity in your skin.

To counteract these effects, it’s essential to stay well-hydrated during your journey.

Therefore, always carry an empty, refillable water bottle, as this will allow you to easily access water once you’re through security checks, enabling you to maintain your hydration levels and ensure your skin remains vibrant and healthy on your vacation.

Bring a Sleeping Mask

We all know that sleep is essential for skin health.

However, it’s a rare luxury during travel, mainly because we are overstimulated by light, noise, and a change of environment.

Therefore, if you are a light sleeper and have difficulty falling asleep, a sleeping mask might be able to help you.

It won’t block the sound; however, keeping your eyes closed for a while without being able to open them at every little sound you hear might surprisingly have an effect on being able to fall asleep easier and get your beauty sleep even at loud and noisy places such as airports and planes.

3 Skincare DONT’s While Traveling

travel skincare

And here are a few things you should not be doing to your skin while traveling:

Don’t Use Makeup Wipes

If you like practicality, you are probably displeased at the idea of trying to fit more than one cleanser in your small toiletry bag; therefore, makeup wipes might be a simple solution to a space-related problem.

But as inconvenient as making more room in your carry-on bag may be, remember that makeup wipes aren’t nearly enough good enough to keep your skin clean.

Makeup wipes are loaded with harsh and irritating ingredients such as alcohol and fragrance, which will cause chaos on your skin when combined with dry cabin air and a dirty environment.

Additionally, makeup wipes are (ironically) the worst way to remove makeup as they tend to smudge everything around unless you scrub the excess grime away, which will undoubtedly result in redness and inflammation on your skin .

Therefore, make sure to bring a standard makeup-removing cleanser, at least if you can’t fit full-sized micellar water or an oil-based makeup remover.

Avoid Heavy Makeup

You absolutely do not need to have a full face of makeup while traveling, regardless if it’s only an hour’s flight or a longer journey.

The reason for this is that the dry, artificial air we face at the airport or on the plane will dehydrate our skin to a point where the makeup might start to feel uncomfortable and cause exacerbated skin texture and enlarged pores instead of minimizing these imperfections.

While you may be uncomfortable at the idea of going out of the house without your signature makeup look, a small sacrifice will decrease your chance of getting breakouts, cracked foundation, and an overall worn-out look while on the plane.

Don’t Experiment With New Products

Just because you’re traveling doesn’t mean your skincare routine has to be much more intense and over the top than usual.

No, you do not need a new serum or a moisturizer to use while on your vacation; you simply need to stick to your routine that already works for your skin.

This will not only help avoid unwanted reactions, such as breakouts and irritation, but will also ensure your skin remains clear, healthy, and glowy during travel.

As a travel writer, I’ve traversed the world dozens of times, visiting far-flung destinations from Morocco to the Maldives. While Emerson may have believed that it's not the destination, but the journey that matters … he never flew on an airplane. From dry cabin air to decreased blood flow, the elements of flying leave most passengers with “Flight Face” — dehydrated and puffy.

On a recent 30-hour journey to Kenya from San Diego, I was dreading the back-to-back red-eye flights and long layover. Then, determined to make the best of it, I decided to use the long-haul flight as an opportunity for some overdue self-care. I gathered up some of the best beauty and wellness treatments in an effort to see which ones could counter the toll that airplanes take, hoping to step off the final flight looking and feeling refreshed. Here’s exactly what I did.

Meet the expert

  • Azadeh Shirazi, MD , is a board-certified dermatologist in La Jolla, California.
  • Michele Green, MD , is a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist in New York City.
  • Chloë Ward is a functional diagnostic nutrition practitioner and certified integrative nutrition health coach in Santa Barbara, California.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Our skin feels most comfortable in 40 to 70 percent humidity, yet during a flight, cabin humidity is typically 10 to 20 percent. This creates transepidermal water loss, which the skin may try to compensate for by retaining water. Combined with a lymphatic system that isn’t working at its peak because we’re largely sedentary, blood flow and circulation slows, leading to puffiness, while decreased moisture creates dehydrated skin.

To ensure you’re getting enough hydration for your journey, fill your water bottle post-security and drink up before you get on a flight where beverage service — and bathroom access — is more limited. “The best defense is a good offense,” says board-certified dermatologist Azadeh Shirazi, MD . “Considering the low humidity of airplane cabins, it’s best to load up on skin hydration before your flight.” That means imbibing extra fluids and applying moisturizing skin products to boost hydration, so you’re covering your bases inside and out. “ Skin flooding is a technique inspired by K-beauty where, after cleansing, you apply a hydrating toner or spray, followed by a water-based serum, and finish off by applying a moisturizer with sunscreen to seal in the hydration,” adds Dr. Shirazi.

While I love the intensely hydrating aspect of sheet masks, wearing one in public takes a certain shamelessness. So, while I sported one on the airplane, if you’d prefer to save the horror movie vibes of a full sheet mask for a pre-flight ritual, apply one either at home before your trip or at a discreet airport lounge before boarding. The Vitabrid C12 Dual Mask is my go-to; it contains hyaluronic acid and works in 10 to 20 minutes to plump the skin with moisture. It comes completely saturated with serum, so applying it over a sink can help cut down on the mess.

Board-certified cosmetic dermatologist Michele Green, MD , also recommends adding sunscreen to your in-flight skin-care routine. “The sun’s UV rays can be even more powerful when flying as you are closer to the ozone layer. Thus, sunscreen is vital to protecting your skin from harmful UV radiation that can increase your risk of developing skin cancer or premature aging signs,” says Dr. Green.

The changes in cabin pressure — along with salty in-flight snacks and prolonged sitting — can cause bloating and puffiness. Keep your lymphatic system moving by getting up and stretching every hour. This may be a daunting prospect on a red-eye flight, but if you can maintain it for the hours you are awake, you can still prioritize sleep while maintaining circulation. While you’re up, take the opportunity to drink a bottle of water and reapply moisturizer.

Bloating from water retention can be combated by hydrating with vitamin-rich snacks, like fruits and vegetables, and magnesium-filled almonds. Where possible, try to avoid salty foods, alcohol, and caffeine, which can further dehydrate you.

Chloë Ward , a functional diagnostic nutrition practitioner and certified integrative nutrition health coach, advises consuming protein-rich snacks to stabilize blood sugar levels. She also suggests “incorporating anti-inflammatory foods like turmeric and ginger to reduce post-flight bloating and discomfort.”

Wearing compression socks can also minimize swelling. While they may not be as appealing as your favorite fuzzy slippers, they’ll prevent swollen ankles and increase circulation.

Use a layover to reap the benefits of body movement. Even if it’s just a fast-paced walk around the terminal, mobilizing your body will help decrease fluid retention. If you have a longer layover, research a more immersive activity source in the area. During my seven-and-a-half-hour layover at JFK airport in NYC, I went to the on-site TWA hotel for a long swim in the heated rooftop pool. Swimming is ideal for stretching the entire body, as is yoga (which can be done in any quiet corner of the airport).

Just as the low humidity on the airplane is dehydrating for your skin, it can also dry out your hair. If possible, use a deep conditioner before your trip. I love the Michael Christopher Calm Down Treatment for my dry hair so it's soft and hydrated prior to flying.

My naturally wavy hair typically becomes a mess during a long flight, so I tried the viral TikTok sock curls method to style my hair on the airplane. I love anything lazy girl beauty, so I was stoked to have these curls work well during my second red-eye flight. I chose to place the wraps on the side of my head, rather than the top and back, which meant less volume but more waves. It was my first time trying the trend and I accidentally rolled one side much looser than the other; lesson learned — rework the sock curls until they are even before going to sleep.

It isn’t always easy to sleep on flights, but coming prepared can help you nod off, giving your body time to repair itself. A silk eye mask to block out the light is gentle on the skin, and a neck pillow can help maintain your alignment and minimize tension. Personally, I avoid sleeping pills (which can be dehydrating, among other side effects) while flying and use CBD instead. The laws around CBD are constantly changing (the TSA allows for CBD with less than .3% THC , but when flying internationally, the guidelines are less clear), so I opt for a blend with zero THC like Joy Organics Tranquil Mint Tincture .

On my long-haul flight, I slathered on the BluZen Wellness vanilla shea butter lip mask before I went to sleep, and applied Luzern Force de Vie Creme Lux to my face. When I woke up, I was pleasantly surprised at how soft my skin felt. Still, next time I fly, I’m planning to opt for the Creme Intensive formula for a richer formulation.

After waking, keep eye wipes, like the Biotrue Micellar Eyelid Cleansing Wipes, handy. They're easy to grab and will gently and thoroughly clean your eye area. I also tried a new-to-me eye drop, the LUMIFY Redness Reliever, which made my always-dry eyes feel more comfortable and removed the redness. To combat dark circles, I rolled on the Back to Earth Skin Glow Eye Cream with coffee extract (caffeine can help decrease redness and puffiness).

At the end of the flight, brush your teeth, apply deodorant, and change into fresh clothes. It will help you reset, feel less groggy, and be ready to take on the next stage of your journey. Dust on some dry shampoo to soak up oil and pump up your volume (I like a non-aerosol powder like Billie Floof for travel). Sometimes, I apply makeup before landing as well, but after 30 hours of pamper time/plane time — I didn't feel like I needed it!

Makeup can be intimidating, especially for beginners. Factor in the cost of dozens of products and the time it takes to put on a full face of makeup and it’s easy to understand why some people—especially travelers—prefer to skip it altogether. For people like me who can't be bothered with a complicated makeup routine but want to look good anyway, though, there’s an answer. And it won’t take up much room in your suitcase .

Clean beauty company Ilia's lineup of products seem made for travelers packing light . Its makeup is designed with skincare in mind, without parabens, artificial fragrances, formaldehyde, oxybenzone, or other toxic ingredients that are harmful to your skin (and the environment). With just a few pieces of Ilia makeup, you can put together a routine that’s quick and natural-looking—the kind you can wear from day to night once we’re on the road again.

One of Ilia's most popular products, the Super Serum Skin Tint , is one of those cosmetics that you never want to run out of. It’s essentially a three-in-one beauty product that combines foundation, hydrating serum, and SPF 40 (made with reef-safe zinc oxide), all in an airplane-friendly one-ounce bottle. A wide range of shades makes it easy to find the color that’s right for you; the website's shade matching tool helps, too—upload a photo of yourself and the brand will recommend the best tint. The serum is made with ingredients like squalane and hyaluronic acid to keep skin moisturized and glowing, while niacinamide means that those with sensitive or acne-prone skin don’t need to worry about breakouts (even if you occasionally forget to take it off before bed).

Ilia, Super Serum Tint

Ilia’s Color Haze , another multi-use product worth a spot in your Dopp kit , comes in a handy squeeze tube and works as both a lip tint and a cream blush. If you’re feeling bold, you can also use the tint on your eyelids. (Though if you're specifically looking for an eyeshadow, there’s a product for that , too.)

No look is complete without mascara, and Ilia created one that amplifies lashes without leaving little black flecks all over your face. Plus, it comes in a handy travel size that’s just 0.1 ounces—about half the size of a regular mascara wand.

For plane rides, there are two key products that will save dried-out skin: Ilia’s Lip Wrap Hydrating Mask , a clear emollient lip balm, and the Blue Light Mist , a refreshing spray that provides soothing hydration. (Both of which, like most Ilia products, can be recycled once you’ve finished them via the brand’s Zero Waste Box program .)

Dry airplane air, varying temperatures, and new foods can all affect your skin—and adding makeup to the mix can wreak havoc. But makeup feels accessible and easy for me with Ilia's multi-use beauty products , and more like an extension of my skincare routine. Before I started using Ilia, I pretty much only wore makeup on special occasions. Now I wear it almost every day—even while traveling.

Worried that all your toiletries, makeup, skincare, hair styling tools, etc etc… won’t fit into your suitcase? Read these tips on how to travel size toiletries to learn how to make the most of limited space without sacrificing your routine!

How to “Travel-Size” Your Favorite Beauty Products

One of the most important aspects of packing is your beauty product collection and trying to figure out how to find the best travel size toiletries to compensate for your personal favorites.

Working for a beauty company myself, I know how hard it is to part with any product used in your perfectly tailored beauty routine. I am here to help slim your packing list for minimalist travel without sacrificing your skincare regimen.

It’s important to bring compact travel size toiletries when traveling for a few reasons .

Most importantly, they fit in your luggage and don’t take up too much space/weight; they are inexpensive so you can restock them when necessary; and they fit within travel guidelines.

Understand the 3-1-1 liquids rule when flying!

Airlines require that liquid products be no more than 3 fl. oz. and all bottles must fit in a clear quart size ziplock bag when traveling with a carry on. If security decides to toss them out, you only lose a small size and it won’t be the end of your trip!

The secret to packing light is to downsize your toiletries and creat e a  travel travel wardrobe which can easily fit into a carryon suitcase with the help of packing cubes !

The list features unique categories to help you pack for your trip efficiently. It includes all the items listed in various categories and has spaces where you can fill in your own information.

With this guide, you can:

  • Write in an item’s weight (lighter items means less overall baggage weight)
  • Note if you need to purchase something or if you already own it
  • Organize where you’ll pack each item

Multi-use Items

One of the best ways to cut down on space and bulk when packing travel size toiletries is to find combination items .

You can find two-in-one shampoos and conditioners, body cleanser that can double as shave gel, a foldable brush with a mirror attached on the handle, and multi-use makeup products like Too Faced Color Prim  and NARS Multiple .

Here are few of our fave multi-use beauty products !

Travel Size Containers

Worried that you won’t have enough space for your toiletries and beauty products in your carry-on? Purchase empty travel size containers of  various shapes and sizes  at any drugstore.

The main thing to know is that the best travel containers are not necessarily the 3oz travel-size.  Pack only what you need with pots and bottles in various sizes:

best-travel-containers

stackable travel container

Stackable Pots

This is my ultimate secret for fitting various toiletries into minimal space. Stackable pots will work extremely well for women that use a variety of different beauty products or have an extensive skincare routine.

  • How to Use Them:  Use one stack for shampoo/conditioner/body wash and another stack for face moisturizer/body moisturizer/sunblock
  • When to Use Them:  Use this strategy for weekend trips and take just what you need or if you have a longer trip and plan on buying products as you go – use the stacks for products that last a long time such as foundation, eye cream, or face moisturizer.
  • At home:  Use these travel containers to store jewelry, crafts, or to consolidate half empty products and make more room on the shelves.

best-travel-containers

small makeup pots

Individual Pots

I love using individual pots for items like my concealer and foundation. I don’t need to use a large quantity and they usually come in a heavy glass bottle so decanting them saves weight too.

I’ve found these to be the best travel containers for small quantities!

  • How to Use Them:  Use them for makeup and beauty products that you won’t need often and to store individual products that you want to take in your purse. (A stack won’t do so well thrown around in your day bag or purse.)
  • When to Use Them:  Anytime. These travel containers can store your bath products on short trips or on longer trips for items you won’t use often.
  • At home:  Have you ever used a concealer container with a pump that gives you more than what you need? Stop wasting product. You can decant the liquid or gel into one of these containers so you only get a dab of what you’ll use.

Airsspu Leakproof Travel Bottles Set

Cylinder Soft Tubes

I prefer pots to tubes but sometimes you need a little more product or a different type of cap. These travel bottles are durable but soft containers and are a fabulous choice.

They tend to be leakproof and long lasting making them the best travel containers in comparison to hard, plastic bottles. GoToob is the most popular brand and has a convenient 2 fl oz size.

  • How to Use Them:  Have several of each container type so you can play Tetris and make the most of the room in your toiletry bag. Use them for runny, thin liquids or for products you’d prefer not to dip your finger into.
  • When to Use Them:  On trips of any length based on the products that just aren’t quite right in a pot.
  • At home:  Using the same principles as the pots, you can maximize limited storage room in your home by decanting any product – even cooking items too!

Usually you can find white sticker labels to put on each bottle to keep them nice and organized as well. If a 3 oz portion of my favorite beauty product doesn’t cut it, I stick it in 2 travel size containers so I always have maximum supply.

Premium 19-piece Necessities Travel Kit

Choose Basics

It’s important to downsize your overall beauty routine and just stick to the basics . Travel size shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and few disposable razors are sufficient for bathing needs.

As for skincare, it can be a little more personalized to your preference but try not to bring more than three skincare items: cleanser, treatment (for acne or for aging skin), and moisturizer. If you use a skin care system different to this one, that’s perfectly fine just try to cut it down to three travel size products.

When using your own travel containers, remember these golden rules:

  • Only fill 2/3 of the container in order to avoid compression leaks
  • Use a piece of saran wrap under the lid for extra leak prevention
  • Avoid water-like substances such as toner. The thinner the liquid the more likely it is to seep through.

What should I do to transport hairspray safely?

Alex

Hi Mary, TFG loves Tresemme travel hair spray: http://bit.ly/1Be4U2p But if you’re traveling carry-on only, a non-aerosol pump spray is recommended: http://amzn.to/1HL9QNh Or if you are worried about packing your hairspray, many of our readers like to purchase toiletry products like hairspray when they reach their destination. I would also highly recommend that you join our TFG facebook group and post your question there about traveling with hairspray: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous community of helpful female travelers that have the best advice and recommendations to share. Hope this helps. ?

Sonya

I use a Katmandu toiletry bag. It is superlight and small and has 2 mesh zippered compartments and one waterproof compartment which is velcroed on. I use the waterproof compartment for my toiletries. One zippered compartment for my laundry and miscellaneous items and the other zippered compartment for my makeup, jewellery and hair ties.

Hi Sonya, thank you for sharing your great review of your Katmandu toiletry bag with us, sounds brilliant! Happy travels!

Diane

Contact cases are great for carrying small amounts. I put foundation on one side and vaseline (used for eye makeup remover) in the other.

Cheryl

Thank you for the great travel tips!

Happy to help!

Would you suggest getting a hair cut before going to save money on a 4 month trip? or just suck it up and get the shampoo when you need it.

I’ve met many travelers that do cut their hair to save money and time. I preferred growing my hair as I found it easier to style than short hair ?

AJ

Was in Seoul Korea and became enamoured by the 14-step beauty routine. Have been carrying around too many bottles and no longer can carry on my bag due to so many liquids. Definitely agree and recommend culling down skin care to essentials.

Nancy

Eye drop bottles! You can actually pop out the tip and put your liquids in it. I had a few bottles of expired prescription eye drop bottles lying around and decided to experiment. I was able to pry off the tip with a very thin flat head screw driver and dump the contents. I cleaned the containers by sloshying them around in a combo of water, dawn, and baking soda. I rinsed them and sloshed some rubbing alcohol around, then let them dry. Pumped my liquid foundation into one, and my liquid Giorgio Armani Fluid Sheer in another (works great as a blush/brownzer and can be used on the lips!). I pop the tips back in and labeled them. Voila!! Tiny 10 ml sized bottles of my essentials!

Love it! Will have to add your recommendation to this list: https://travelfashiongirl.com/best-travel-containers/

Kitty

Smart idea!

Loxie

I didn’t want to fight my hair on my trip to England, Ireland, and Spain, so fortunately my hair stylist (who happens to be my daughter) found my favorite shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, etc., in travel-size containers, so I could still enjoy my salon products while traveling.

Milpse28

Soak cotton pads/balls with your favorite toner/liquid eye makeup remover etc. And create your own make up remover wipes…AND they will not count as liquids (as long as the liquids are completely absorbed).

Su Lucas

Solid sunsceen, of course! ?

Lynn Winter

Great tips – especially on need to downsize! The more organized I am, the better the travel experience. Just tried packsimply.com to assemble my own toiletry kit online. So far, so good!

alex

Wow I’ll have to check that out! Thanks for the recommendation Lynn! And my toiletries used to add up so quickly! Definitely necessary to slim those down as well!

Linda

I have used Lush’s solid shampoo and conditioner on several short trips. I really like them. I have the shampoo named “Honey, I washed my hair”. It smells like honey, and seems to be lasting quite well. Another tip I learned from a friend is to use your hair conditioner for shaving your legs. It moisturizers your skin at the same time!

Great tips! I also use conditioner to shave too. Super smooth 😉

Erin

Your site has been critical to my careful planning of an upcoming trip to Europe. Thank you! Do you have any suggestions for toiletry bags? I like the idea of a water-resistant pouch, keeping everything together in the showers, as I’m awfully forgetful. Flight 001 clear TSA bag looks good but reviews say the zipper might not be reliable. Any good tips?

Hi Erin, thank you! It makes me feel great to be able to help you with your trip 🙂 Here are some toiletry bag suggestions: https://travelfashiongirl.com/best-toiletry-bags-for-travel-our-top-10-choices-to-help-you-organize/ Hope this helps!

Claudia.

I use a bag from Mary KAY. It’s a hanging bag and has 4 larger clear plastic zipper pouches. They are Velcroed to the hanger and come off easily. It folds up and stays closed. I open it and lay it flat on the top of everything in my suitcase. It holds makeup and toiletries and the pouches don’t leak. It’s hangs up with an attached hanger. I like being able to take one of the pouches off and just use one at a time making it easy to take your makeup to a different room if necessary.

Hi Claudia, thank you for your comment! Thank you so much for sharing your recommendation with me! 🙂

13 Best Travel-Size Beauty Products You Need in Your Carry-On Bag

Model Bella Hadid is seen at CharlesdeGaulle airport on December 12 2018 in Paris France.

Whether you’re on the go for work , visiting your family for the holidays , or just like to have your whole beauty routine in your bag at all times, travel-size beauty products are super convenient. These adorable minis easily fit in your bag, saving you precious luggage space and most importantly, spare you from a time-consuming, sometimes embarrassing search at airport security.

According to the Transportation Security Administration , to pass through airport security, liquid products in your carry-on bags must be 3.4 ounces or less, per the label on the bottle. And no, it doesn’t matter if you have only or less than 3.4 ounces of liquid in a bottle that is bigger that once carried more than 3.4 ounces. The liquid has to be in a bottle that is only able to carry 3.4 ounces or less, or else you may have to throw it out. Another, lesser-known rule to keep in mind is that all of your liquid bottles have to fit in a one quart bag. Without doing a lot of math, you might be realizing that it’s hard to fit your entire beauty routine into that criteria, or even just your carry-on bags.

And while checked luggage is always an option, there’s some other factors to consider when you’re on the go. They might get damaged in transit if the containers are made of glass or another fragile material. Plus, when you can’t keep an eye on them, you might get worried about them spilling all over your clothes and other belongings. And, if you realize you forgot to put on sunscreen before sitting in a window seat on the plane or need to apply some hand cream after being in the dry atmosphere, you won’t have access to your beauty products.

Here at Teen Vogue , our editors have done their fair share of travel, and experienced all its ups and downs. So, over the years, we’ve been able to experiment and see just which beauty products have stood up to the test of travel. We’ve rounded up our favorite travel-size beauty products below, so you can travel comfortably (and moisturized) this season.

For days where you’re traveling with makeup, this wipe will be your saving grace. You can remove your makeup and cleanse your face with ease, right from the comfort of your airplane seat or hotel bed. And you won’t have to worry about the liquid requirements!
