Elefantastic, an ethical elephant sanctuary in jaipur, india review & discussion of elephants attractions, rides..

Posted by La Carmina on August 8, 2017

jaipur elefantastic sanctuary farm

Hello, my gentle giant!

Let me introduce you to a compassionate elephant sanctuary in Jaipur, India —   Elefantastic .  I saw firsthand how the caretakers treat elephants like family, and dedicate their lives to raising awareness about conservation and ethics.

Elephant tourism is a contentious subject , as these sensitive creatures are too often mistreated. Let’s have a open conversation in this post, and I welcome your thoughts as always.

painting elephants jaipur india

In my view, travelers should educate themselves about animal attractions , and refuse to support those that are cruel. Before my trip, I did extensive research about elephant experiences in India.  Many locations offer rides (particularly at Jaipur’s Amber Fort), but these unequivocally cause the elephants to suffer (carrying loads of tourists in a painful saddle, getting prodded with hooks and kept in chains, not having adequate care and rest).

Then, I read about  Elefantastic  — a Jaipur sanctuary that makes rescuing elephants its mission. I browsed through reviews and blog posts, and saw that the response was universally positive.

Here,  guests get to interact with these intelligent creatures in ethical ways, including feeding and washing them, and decorating them with nontoxic chalks (more on that later, as well as the meaning of Hindu swastikas!)

Yukiro and I were traveling through India with the highest-rated travel company,  Janu Private Tours,   and they’ve always given us fair and honest advice. Mr Janu has brought travelers to Elefantastic since it opened in 2012, and assured us that the sanctuary met the highest standards.

When we arrived, we were greeted by Elefantastic’s owner Rahul (Anil Choudhary, above). He spoke passionately about his mission: rescuing elephants, taking responsibility towards their welfare,  educating guests through positive interaction.

petting volunteering indian elephants

Rahul assigned us to one of the female elephants, and we were with her for the entire half-day. He showed us how she liked to be touched : on the trunk, at the cheeks, under the big floppy ears. We could even wrap our arms around her trunk and give her a hug! She responded happily, with bright eyes and a flip of the ears.

Have you ever been up close with an elephant? It’s incredible… these are the largest land animals in Asia, yet they’re so gentle and intelligent. We felt we could put our full trust in her, and it was clear that she was  enjoying the human attention.

Close-up on her beautiful grey skin, which has some mottled patches on the nose bridge. (All Indian elephants have different markings, and distinct personalities once you get to spend time with them).

My India-themed nail art is by  Glam Nail Studio;   they decorated my gradient gel nails with small gems and a chrome polish finish.

feeding rescued elephant, elefantastic

Our elephant’s “mahout,” or keeper, never left her side. In India, mahouts typically begin their profession as boys, and are assigned to an elephant for life.

At Elefantastic, we saw that the elephants live in their own individual houses, which they share with their mahout and his family. The sanctuary is on a huge plot of land, and the creatures have plenty of room to roam freely (they are never tied up).

Our mahout tied together palm fronds and stems, and showed us how to feed our elephant. We placed the bundle in the nostril area of her trunk, and gave the verbal command “Leht.” She grabbed the food and dexterously twisted it up to her mouth!

elephant rescue jaipur

Fun facts: Indian elephants spend 14-19 hours a day feeding, and consume several hundred pounds of vegetation daily. They are vegetarians and mainly eat leaves, tree bark, roots and stems.

Our elephant was clearly well-maintained; she was calm and radiated happiness. Aren’t her brown eyes lovely? ( Eye contact is important for making the elephants feel secure, so you can’t wear sunglasses during this activity. I’m wearing tinted prescription glasses.)

amber fort elephants jaipur

I loved seeing the  close bond between the mahouts and their life-long partners . These caretakers guide them with Sinhalese verbal commands such as “stay” or “walk forward.” They never use chains, hooks, poles  or any instruments to force the elephants. They’ll sometimes gently tug the elephant’s ears with their hands to steer her, but this doesn’t cause pain.

As you can see, Elefantastic’s residents always have shade from the elements, and the grounds are meticulously maintained.

painted decorated elephant india

Once our elephant had her meal, it was time to give her a makeover! In India, elephants are traditionally painted in rainbow colors for festivals and special occasions. Unfortunately, many of these paints are harsh and contain lead.

Elefantastic provided us with a palette of non-toxic, organic chalks that cause no harm to their bodies (I got some on my hand, and it washed right off with water). Since elephants don’t sweat and only have pores between their toes, this doesn’t clog up their skin.

Of course, we dressed her in Goth and punk symbols!  Pentagram, 666, A for anarchy, a wonky Leviathan cross. But what’s the deal with the swastika?

india swastikas on doors

If you spend any time in India, you’ll come across swastikas , especially on the front of doors and gates.

hindu swastika sign

While Westerners primarily associate the swastika with Nazi Germany, it is in fact an ancient Sanskrit symbol that translates to “marker of goodness.” In other words, this has been an auspicious Hindu sign for thousands of years, long before the terrible events of World War II.

rainbow painted elephant festival india

Our neon elephant looks like she’s ready for a rave! We decorated her side with lucky “swastika rangoli,” which have dots between each of the four arms.

india swastikas logos

Many Hindus paint swastikas on doorways and home entrances, to invite in prosperity and good fortune. (I took these images in a residential area of Jaipur.)

I think our Gothic elephant painting project turned out rather well! She’s one of us now.

(My black sun hat is by Lack of Color; more of their designs are below.)

india swastik ganesha statue

In Hinduism, the clockwise swastik is a representation of Lord Vishnu and the sun god Surya. I also found it on the sash of  Ganesha, the elephant god.

Less commonly, you’ll see the reverse / counterclockwise version, or  sauvastika . It is associated with the goddess Kali, magic and nighttime.

Regardless of how you decorate your elephant, it’s fun to take part in the cultural ritual . Our new friend leaned in and loved the strokes and attention.

We added some devilish kawaii to this flank. Can you tell we’re having fun?

Now, it’s time for a bath! Our mahout walked our elephant over to a grassy field, and we hosed her down with water. (The safe chalks came right off.)

bathing washing elephants india

We put some water into a bowl, and our elephant sucked it up like a straw. Then, she swung her trunk around and sprayed herself to cool off!

Water for elephants is a must: they can drink 200 liters a day. The staff kept us hydrated too, offering us unlimited chilled bottles of water, and masala chai.

I posted some video clips of the Elefantastic experience above and here. Watch us hand-feed our friend and bathe her, along with other footage of traveling in India.

Out of the three individuals above, who has the most fabulous pose? I’m guessing you would say the elephant!

One of the most beloved Hindu gods is the elephant-headed Ganesh . Some say that Lord Shiva beheaded him, and replaced his head with that of an elephant. Lord Ganesha / Ganapati is known as a wise, playful scholar who removes obstacles, and is the patron of the arts and sciences.

elephant drinking water from hose

Once you get to know a real-life Ganesha, you can see where these characteristics come from. Yukiro and I were in awe of our elephant’s sensitivity and intelligence , which came through in the way she connected with us and her environment.

These mammals are known for their wide range of complex social behaviors: grief, memory, altruism, cooperation, using tools… In many ways, they leave us in the dust.

elephant attractions jaipur india

She is a 28-year-old  Indian elephant, a sub-species with smaller ears than her African cousin. About half of female Asian elephants have short tusks, or tushes, which you can see when she opens her mouth for a drink.

Since 1986, India’s elephants have been listed as endangered , as they have suffered significant population decline. Poaching and the loss of natural habitats are mainly to blame. It’s more important than ever to donate and support conservation efforts like Elefantastic’s, to stop them from becoming extinct.

elephant riding without saddle

Elefantastic listens to its guests, and is always striving to do their best for the sake of their rescued elephants. When we visited in mid July, the policy was that elephants could only be ridden in an ethical way: once every two days for 45 minutes max, and without a saddle that causes discomfort. Guests could sit “bareback,” on a soft cushion that is tied and positioned in a way that does not hurt.

However, as of late July 2017, Elefantastic has come to the decision that they will no longer allow elephant rides,  to raise awareness toward animal welfare.

ride elephants india

Yukiro and I were therefore some of the last guests to get on top an elephant. We chose to ride for only 15 minutes (we climbed up here from stepping off a staircase). Our mahout led her through the spacious grounds, while we hung on tight and petted her bristly forehead!

ethically ride elephant

While we felt that this method did not stress the elephants, we agree with Elefantastic’s decision to stop all rides. From now on,  guests can walk alongside their new friend, and take her for a leisurely stroll on the property.

amber fort jaipur elephant rides

We can honestly tell you that elephants are treated with the utmost respect at Elefantastic. We saw them living in un-tethered natural conditions, and connecting with their gentle mahout keepers.

What a joy to be in the presence of these powerful creatures. I encourage you to support this fantastic animal sanctuary, and volunteer with the elephants for yourself.

To make a booking : visit the  Elefantastic  website and email Rahul ([email protected]) to secure your reservation. They offer hotel pick-ups and drop-offs, and you can either start in the morning or afternoon for half a day of activities. A delicious vegetarian lunch is included at Rahul’s mother’s house — the simple meal is made with love, and was one of the best I had in India!

We contacted 2 tour companies in India…

We contacted 2 tour companies in India with Elefantastic travel(based on trip advisor reviews) and Elefantastic was by far the most prompt and professional in their response. From the moment we contacted Elefantastic we had a positive experience and that only improved when our tour commenced. We had decided on our itinerary and the hotel including booking some directly. Elefantastic took all of that in their stride. The tour was complete bespoke and faultlessly executed. This was our fourth trip in golden tringel. We contact with Mr. Brijesh and reply all answer and all informeson .Brijesh who was there to meet us at the airport was also great deal with. All our local guide were excellent and knowledgeable and friendly. Mr. Lallu is very nice and friendly and knowledge.we are very happy 8 days trip in Delhi, Agra, Jaipur seen so many things. Thank for Rahul and Brijesh, and lallu make wonderful trip in India. We intend to return to India in the future and will most definitely be using Elefantastic again.

Amazing service

Despite visiting India many times over the years I booked the services of Elefantastic travel while on a visit with family and am so glad I did. Creating my itinerary was straightforward and Rahul replied to all my emails quickly, nothing was too much trouble. The car he supplied for us was clean, reliable, and our driver Ajit was always on time, courteous and answered our many questions about India and life in this amazing country. We visited Delhi, Agra, Pushkar and Jaipur. All of the recommended hotels were outstanding and the guides that we met at each destination had a wealth of knowledge that was second to none. I would definitely recommend Rahuls services at Elefantastic Travel to anybody visiting India, whether it’s your first visit or your tenth!

Elefantastic travel!

Rahul and Brijesh took care of everything with our trip. We had some stuff we wanted to see and days where we did not know. They organised our trip with drivers, facilities and visits. They responded to any question we had during the trip and were always one step ahead to manage any problem we could have. We had still the liberty of doing whatever we wanted during this journey, and i was a releif to know that they prevent us for any trouble we may find. Thank you. I recommand gladly their agency to all tourist.

Amazing People & Service

I was slightly apprehensive as a lone female taking this trip but I shouldn’t have worried as I felt very well looked after by my driver, all the guides and staff in the hotels. It was a fabulous trip with my it was all fabulous with my favourite part being the Amber Fort and the City Palace in Jaipur! Mr. Sharma was my driver and he was always punctual and I felt so safe as his driving skills were excellent unlike some of the other drivers on the road. All the guides at each location really brought the places to life and were all very knowledgeable, spoke excellent English and took great photos too!! My trip in March was just before lockdown and the guides were all instructed to wear face masks which they did. The hotels were all really good in particular the Hilton in Agra. There were options to go shopping which I chose not to do and there was no hard sell on this which I really did appreciate. I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone-it exceeded my expectations.

Amazing Guided Tours of Delhi, Agra & Jaipur

Indian Destination Experts (Rahul) organized a wonderful and flexible private tour package for our family when we visited India in May 2019. Their add-on options were also valuable and interesting recommendations, and left entirely up to us to decide upon. Communications and courtesy were excellent, and appreciated. They offered to be our contact in India for our eVisa process as well, which was helpful. We had a comfortable car with wifi, with ready phone charging, a pleasant and flexible driver and we met up with local tours in each city who shared their knowledge with us in a way that was in-depth while also understandable. A very pleasant experience!

Super wonderful experience

How lucky was I to experience the Indian culture with my son who had visited previously. Manish Singh our driver was just wonderful and I found him warm natured and so efficient. Our safety was clearly his prime concern and he never let us down - the traffic in the Golden Triangle was...well... crazy! Nothing prepares you for it but with Manish at the wheel we felt safe. Always there the moment we needed him with door opened - we felt like celebrities'!! At each of the 3 cities we visited we were so happy to have the very best of guides. First there was Karan Singh - so knowledgeable and very personable... thank you Rahul. We then were accompanied on our tour by Brijesh. Amazing planning and an altogether super informed brilliant guy. Lastly we were lucky to get the lovely Manish who I nicknamed my packhorse as he was always there carrying my rucksack and parcels without any fuss. I so appreciated all four of these super nice gentlemen and although prior to being anxious before our epic visit to the Triangle, I need not have worried - the attention to detail and care they gave us was exceptional. A very BIG thank you to you all.

I had visited the Elephantastic park in…

I had visited the Elephantastic park in Jaipur and it was a unique and awesome experience for me. I was introduced to an Elephant named Shampa. She was the most sweetest animal I met. You can really be close to the elephants and bond with them. You can massage them, feed them, bathe them and go for a walk with them. Another good thing I liked about the place is, that no animals are chained nor does the Mahout have a stick that they usually carry. All commands given are verbal and the animal follows it to the T. Must visit if you visit Jaipur. They then take you for lunch at their house. Rahul 's mother who cooks and serves you is also an amazing lady. Here I must mention the three Pit bulls they have in the farm. They are also real angels. I was always under the impression that Pit Bulls are very aggressive, but these three were very sweet

EleFANTASTIC!!

Unbelievable. What a privilege. Up close and personal with a gentle giant. Dildad(Mowgli) and Vik? answered all our questions and encouraged us to get fully involved with Chan Chow. She had been rescued from a circus and unfortunately was blind in one eye and partially blind in the other. Despite this she appeared cheerful and took kindly to us offering her bundles of grass to eat. We cuddled her, scratched her behind the ears, by her eyes and on her trunk. We then put some unharmful paints on her as our next job was to wash her. What great fun. Hiding her down and scrubbing her body and trunk while she drank out of a large tub and sprayed us. You haven’t lived until you’ve been hosed by an elephant. After that it was a walk so that we could all dry off. Our experience with her cane to and end after 3 hours but then we were taken to Rahuls house (the owner) for lunch. A top class morning.

Trip with Elefantastic

Your biggest work to find Mr. Brijesh and Rahul rest just leave it to them to plan your holidays to make itinerary, choose hotels within your budget, choose best driver (Mr. Manish) for your vacations. My only request was to see the Taj at sunrise and Ganges boat Private Boat trip with Indian live music. All it was fantastic arranged. We were so lucky to have Brijesh take us on tour of Rajasthan, Agra & Ganges Benares. We had an incredible time sightseeing, shopping and goofing off with Manish. Yeah, we went to the must do tourist things but I was so thrilled when he suggested we go see a movie, took us for lassi at Jaipur. It was not our first time, we've been around the world and have used drivers in many different countries. I only write reviews if I'm impressed with the service and professionalism received. Don't hesitate....book with this company. You will not be disappointed to book your trip with Mr. Rahul and Brijesh. All the best to you Rahul ,Brijesh and Manish. We will be back and will definitely use your services again !!

In 2020 , we were fortunate to get Lallu as our driver at first. We used 3 drivers in total, all of them very profissional and Nice. We particularly like Pankaj. We strongly recommend him and the company Humble , caring , punctual and the best guide we could ask for ! He changed our whole North India trip ( to best ) .We don't remember other details on how we hired him ! But willing to hire him again later. Does he work for your company ??? We are in search of him and realised there are many jeets . We don't know his full name either . Please help out to reach him . He's a Punjabi , wears Kada in hand ...tall and fair . I remember 10 year me playing with him all the time in the trip . We are planning for another and in search of Lalu & Pankaj again. Highly recommanded !

Amazing experience that I will never forget!!! Beyond expectations, loved it!

I went for the elephant experience as recommended by a very good friend that loved it. Even with her story the experience exceeded all my expectations!! Everything was amazing and this was definitely an experience that I will never forget. Rahul, his brother, mother and team are lovely and know how to provide an experience outside the box. They picked me up at the hotel and dropped me off, gave me a super warm welcome, explained me all about their work with the elephants. We fed, showered and walked with the elephants. In my case with the lovely Chen Chel, whom I will always carry in my heart. My guide there (I forgot his name, lovely young boy) was great and he explained me everything and I enjoyed every minute of my visit. To raise the experience even more, it ends with a home mad lunch made by Rahuls mum, who received you in her home. She was super warm and charming and her food was the best I’ve tasted so far in India!!! Big big thank you to all of you, I will definitely recommend you to every person visiting India and hopefully will se you one day again. My best wishes and all the luck for the future. Namaste, Sol.

Trip with Elefantastic is fantastic

We have just been to a two weeks perfect tailored tour in Rajasthan. We visited Agra, Jaipur, Pushkar, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Deogarh and Udaipur. The whole Family, 2 adults and a 11 years old boy, loved it. We arranged it through Trustpilot and mails. Rahul was so patient with all our requests and gave us good advises. The result were 2 perfectly organised weeks with our driver Mr. Lallu. We felt save the whole time with the Innova and enough of water supply and ice in the hot weather. The company representative was waiting for us in every new city. We discussed the next tour and at what time the tour guide will come to pick up us. The accomodation was just as described and from us requested. The service was totally great. We were picked up from the airport in Delhi, accompanied through the whole journey, brought to our Inland fly from Udaipur to Delhi and then welcomed with another team in Delhi again. Until our flight back home from Delhi we hat somebody on our side. A company representative was even calling during our journey to ask if we are doing well or need something! The tour guides in the cities were all locals and explained us a lot about the local history, culture and religion. We can just reccomend to travel with Elefantastic Travel, so you don`t need to care about the road, the organisation or the accomodation. You can relax and have more time to dive in that colourful amazing country! We will be definitely back.

Amazing trip to India with Elefantastic travel

If you are planning a trip to India book with Elefantastic travel, a 5* company with 5* service! We have recently returned from a 2 week private tour and can't wait to book our next visit with Elefantastic. Everyone we came into contact with was exceptionally caring and highly professional. We must give a special mention to Manish who safely drove us miles and miles across India, carefully negotiating the cows, pigs, dogs, camels, trucks, motorbikes and vehicles of all different shapes and sizes! We felt safe at all times on the long road journeys. Vinod, our guide in Varanassi was wonderful, looking after my needs when I was a bit unwell. Thank you Vinod. The Ganges experience was truly amazing and the knowledge you shared was fascinating. Raja in Agra and Joti in Shimla were also exceptional guides and great company. Joti tracked us at all the stations, waiting on the platform as we pulled in on the toy train checking we had everything we needed....even holding up the train for me to use the ladies!! 😊 anything is possible in India! We must give a special mention to Mr Brijesh who arranged our tour. Ever patient and courteous in the exchange of many emails, he put together a superb holiday which will remain in our hearts for a lifetime. Thank you Brijesh and all of your team for looking after us so well....I hope we'll be able to see more of India in the future and will book with you again without hesitation. 100%!!

From booking to finally arriving at the airport to fly home, Brijesh Sharma, from Elefantastic Travel provided a very organised, professional and efficient service. Any queries were answered immediately. On the tour everything was arranged for us and we didn't have to lift a finger. The hotels were fabulous. Food was interesting, but there was something that we could eat at each one. We were met by a rep at the airport and introduced to our driver, Mr.Ajit who was brilliant. The car was a people carrier, with plenty of room, immaculately clean and only 3 months old. The air conditioning was lovely. Mr Ajit described the country as we travelled, and was very professional. He arranged our best meal at a 'proper' Indian restaurant which was much appreciated. The tour guides at each stop were all very knowledgable. Payment to attractions is on top of what you have paid, but it is not much. To get into the Taj Mahal was the equivalent of £13.00. Very good value for such a beautiful attraction. Visits to the attractions were also arranged for morning or late afternoon evening, so it wasnt too hot. We went early April and the heat was lovely. As two females travelling (myself and my friend) this is a brilliant way to visit India, as you feel safe and don't have to worry how you are going to get anywhere. I would strongly recommend Elefantastic Travel for any excursions or tours, we had an amazing once in a lifetime experience, and I am very pleased I chose to go with this company.

Just finished 9 day trip through the…

Just finished 9 day trip through the golden triangle with Pankaj as our driver. We had already been in Delhi for two days, Pankaj picked us up to take us to Agra and Jaipur. Pankaj was really helpful giving us alternatives to our itinerary cause traveling can be tiring, so it's good to know we had other choices. He too made sure of our safety by giving suggestions if we wanted to roam the city by ourselves. Our tour started in Jaipur, then Agra and Delhi. In each city we had a city tour with a guide. I want to give a shout out to our guide in Fatehpur Sikri, Ali. He told the story with such of poise. He too know how to take good pictures. He was always punctual, friendly, and a great driver. We ended up with a nail in our tire, Mukesh quickly pulled over to a shop to get it patched. Unfortunately the patch didn't hold so he had to pull over again later and change to the spare tire! It was unfortunate but he was quick to fix it so that we could get back on the road. He also did it all with a smile on his face! We really enjoyed the cleanliness and spaciousness of the van for the 4 of us each day. It felt like a relaxing spot in between the chaos of visiting all the monuments and sites. Initial coordination with Rahul before our trip was great, he also helped arrange another car last minute for our friends when they realized they needed to leave Jaipur a day early. Overall would recommend Elefantastic!

Yogesh, from the Leela Palace Hotel showed us around the city and did an amazing job. We hit all the spots you shouldn't miss, met some amazing people and got a feel for a beautiful city from behind the scenes. After many months of searching and planning our holiday to India, I came After weeks of searching for a tour of India, I came across Elefantastic through TripAdvisor forum. Based on the number of excellent reviews I contacted the company and Rahul started the process of helping me with my holiday plan. From the start, he was excellent, replying to my endless emails and questions, change of plans etc. I booked flights and hotels separately and only needed a car, driver and a guide. After finalising our tour, we went ahead and booked with Rahul. We had a Toyota Christa SUV which was very comfortable for the two of us. We were met at the airport by our driver and Brijesh from the company. We immediately felt at ease and off we went to our hotel in Delhi. From here on, everything went perfectly to plan. Our driver Shambhu was fantastic, a real gentleman and had a good sense of humour. His driving skills exceptional on the crazy roads in India. Not once did we feel uncomfortable. Our tour was 17 nights, covering Delhi with Shobhit Singh as our guide. Agra with Rahul. Fatehpur Sikri with Ali (my favourite!) Jaipur with Himanshu and finally Udaipur with Arvind Singh. All these guides were amazing giving us insight into the culture and history of places we visited. We finished our tour in Shimla before returning to Delhi for our flight home. This was our first visit to India and will not be our last. Amazing country, amazing sights and most of all amazingly friendly people. You are very much in safe hands with Elefantastic. We were very sad to say our goodbyes to Shambhu. Contact me for our itinerary if you like.
