Meteora Monastery:

Over 600 years ago Byzantine monks chose to build their monastic community atop limestone rock “towers” that extend nearly 900 feet into the air, making them virtually inaccessible. It is one of the greatest monuments in the world, and is the most important monastic center in Greece. You can climb these rocks and travel the paths hidden behind the massive rocks.

The Palace of Versailles

The iconic Palace of Versailles (UNESCO) and its gardens reflect the extravagant tastes of King Louis XIV, the "Sun King." Alongside a local guide, learn the history and admire the various rooms of the State Apartments, including the Queen's bedchamber and the famous Hall of Mirrors. Be sure to explore the incredible gardens, some of the most famous in the world, which took over 40 years to complete and include intricate architecture, elaborate fountains, and gorgeous statues.

Drift down a canal:

While canals are found across Europe, nothing beats a romantic gondola ride in Venice. Locals like to say the best way to explore the city is to ‘get lost.’ So take a ride along these waterways, step off and then wind your way through the intricate blend of bridges, narrow streets and grand squares.

This was the first capital of Spain located about 43 miles south of Madrid. The history of Toledo dates back to the Roman occupation circa 192 B.C. The old city of Toledo sits atop of a small mountain surrounded on three sides by the Tagus River, and medieval walls on the fourth. From the top of the mountain you can get a 180 degree view of the surrounding landscape.

15 Best Europe destinations in November of 2023

November can be an excellent month to visit Europe as long as you are prepared for the weather, which is mostly on the cool side and rarely even close to frozen. Summer is peak season for most popular European cities, and Christmas season tends to be crowded as well, so a November visit allows you to sneak in when crowds and prices are low and the weather is still decent.

The list below contains Europe’s only good beach destination in November as well as the 14 best options for those wanting a cultural holiday. Pretty much all of the famous cities are on the list below, and fortunately none of them are known for getting much in the way of rain, and that goes for London as well. All of the hotel prices are updated for 2023 and there are some great deals in Europe this November.

Tenerife, canary islands, spain.

Tenerife highlights

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and the best choice for English speakers as well. Head to the resort area in the southwest of Tenerife around the town of Los Cristianos for the most choices of hotels and apartment rentals. In November you’ll be surrounded by northern Europeans and the local workers. You might also look into the other Canary Islands including Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and La Palma, which all have similar weather and hotel prices. Tenerife is arguably the easiest for English speakers, but all of them are very welcoming.

14 Best non-beach destinations in Europe in November

Rome, italy.

If this is your first visit to Italy you’ll probably want to head north from Rome and visit Florence and Venice (both mentioned below). But if you have more time you might also consider  Sorrento , which is a bit south of Naples. It’s a bit warmer in November and it’s the perfect base for day trips of Naples, Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast and the Isle of Capri.

Florence, Italy

As the capital and largest city in the famous Tuscany region, Florence is also a great food city. Avoid places with English menus out front for the best quality and value.

Venice, Italy

The downside to visiting Venice in November is that it’s the peak month for the Acqua Alta, which is the high-tide flooding that the city experiences. It’s still possible to get around and enjoy a Venice visit in November, but it’s also wise to keep track of the Acqua Alta situation and work your schedule around it. The hotel prices for 2023 listed below are for rooms on the main island where all the sights are located. You can save some money by staying on the mainland or another nearby island, but it’s a lot of hassle getting back and forth so it’s really not worth it.

Paris, France

As long as you dress properly you can still even enjoy the excellent hop-on, hop-off bus tour of Paris in November. It’s arguably the best city bus tour in Europe and it connects nearly all of the most famous buildings and attractions. London, England

London is another example of a mostly indoor city so the weather doesn’t really slow most visitors down. The famous attractions such as the (free) museums and famous cathedrals are welcoming no matter the weather outside. Barcelona, Spain

If this is your first time to Spain you are going to want to spend 3 or 4 nights in Barcelona but also then take the high-speed train (in 2.5 hours) to Madrid for 3 or 4 nights there. The cities are very different from each other and both are wonderful for tourists with excellent food and nightlife on top of everything else. November is actually one of the best times to visit Spain , due to the mild weather and smaller crowds.

Madrid, Spain

The high-speed train that connects Madrid and Barcelona is fairly cheap if you book it at least a couple weeks in advance. Spain has a few of its own low-cost airlines, so flights into Madrid are pretty cheap this time of year, although booking early helps here as well.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon highlights

• Castles, towers, and cathedrals, all in the main center
• Tram 28, which connects many of Lisbon’s tourist sights for €3 a ride

• Great food at surprisingly affordable prices
• Fado local music shows to go along with great meals

This otherwise remote city is a real gem for those who go out of their way to get here. It’s a lovely city on 7 hills so views are fantastic in every direction. And the food and culture here are very interesting as well as quite different from Spain. You can take an overnight train from Madrid, but flying is probably the better option for most people.

Interlaken, Switzerland

Interlaken highlights

• Gateway to the Lauterbrunnen Valley, the most beautiful place in Europe

On the other hand, Interlaken in November is not ideal because many hotels and businesses close down between mid October when the hiking season ends and mid December when skiing season begins. There are still places open and plenty to see, but you have to plan a bit more. If you want to visit a second place in Switzerland to admire the unusual beauty,  Lucerne  is your best bet.

Berlin, Germany

Another great thing about this city is that it’s cheaper than the other large cities in Germany including  Munich  and  Hamburg . Amsterdam, Netherlands

The stunning architecture is one of the things that brings people to Amsterdam, and as long as you dress properly you’ll be able to soak that all in this month. Aside from that this is a cultural capital with excellent nightlife and a thriving arts scene. That goes all year round, as do the coffeeshops and small pubs all over town.

Prague, Czech Republic

It will still be crowded in the main squares of Prague in November, but much less so than in warmer months so it’s more pleasant in general. If you want to spend a bit more time in Czechia, head to  Cesky Krumlov , which is 3 hours away on a scenic bus ride or train. Cesky Krumlov is much more charming than Prague, and it’s cheaper than Prague by quite a bit as well.

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest has a lot in common with Prague, but the architecture here is on a grander scale for the most part and it feels very different. This city is also one of the cheaper capital cities in Europe, so your travel fund really goes a long way here. The famous nightlife in the ruin pubs should not be missed at any time of year.

Istanbul, Turkey

• November avg high: 60°F/16°C

Istanbul highlights

• Great food at very reasonable prices, especially the breakfasts
• Affordable hotels in the popular tourist district of Sultanahmet

Those that have more than a few days might also consider exploring more of Turkey. For one thing, every other city in the country is at least a bit cheaper than Istanbul. And most places have even warmer temperatures in November, so it’s an ideal time to explore Cappadocia or even the southern coast along  Antalya .

The currency in 2023 has plummeted and inflation has been pretty severe. The net result is that Turkey is one of the cheapest countries in the world this year for foreign visitors who bring in other currencies. That said, there has been a bit of unrest (usually very easy to avoid) so keep you eye on the news.

Hi Roger, Thank you for having such an informative and helpful page. We are planning a last minute trip to Europe during Thanksgiving break for 10 days landing and departing from Frankfurt. We will most likely be traveling by train. We were hoping to be able to hit a couple of countries during our first time trip to Europe. Ideally we would prefer warmer destinations for this time of the year. We are not really into partying and drinking rather we enjoy sightseeing, seeing different cultures, eating local foods. Which countries/ cities would you recommend for us? Ooh lastly how many days and nights in each place would you suggest. Hoping to explore as much as we can during this time away. Thank you in advance for all your help and guidance.

Sorry about the delay on answering this. It’s probably too late if you are going this year. Needless to say, if you want milder temperatures you should go south from Frankfurt. I’d focus on Italy, southern France, and Spain. Again, sorry for missing this before. -Roger

I have been planning for an Euro trip by Nov 2021 and for 30 days. I wanna visit maximum famous spots but with adequate time at every spot. Not to rush over everywhere.Can you please suggest me a few cities ? And also since I have a longer time in hand, biased to that do u have some other time to suggest for me to manage? Like February or March…?

I’d start out with this article about the best European destinations for a first visit . That will give you all of the most popular choices for groups of cities and countries to visit, with some other options to add on for each one.

I highly recommend London and Paris as two of the best places for a first visit. London is amazing and fairly easy to visit because of the language, and Paris is so filled with impressive sights and great food that it ends up being the favorite stop of most who visit.

November is nice enough in both places, but I’m not sure I’d recommend going in December through February because the days are quite short (sunrise at 8:30 AM and sunset at 4 PM or so). March is nicer so it’s another good choice. I’m happy to answer more questions as you start to put your trip together. -Roger

Hoping we will be out of the Covid crisis by November, my daughter (28) and I would like to either travel to Italy or Croatia, or both. We would be going the first of November. Would your recommend either or both? Also, would the south of Italy be a better option or would it be all closed up for the season?

Sorry for the slow response. Of those two I’d definitely go to Italy in November. Almost all of the best places in Croatia are along the coast, and by November it’s quite chilly and many places are very quiet. Italy, on the other hand, has some beach towns that are slow in November (Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre etc), but the cities are still lively and November weather tends to be pretty mild.

Again, I’d probably minimize time in the beach areas, but you could go to Sicily and have very nice weather. The main cities will all be quite busy, though still not many tourists. November is a great time to visit Italy. Let me know if you have any other questions. -Roger

Is it a good idea to visit the Dolomites from Rome for 3 days? We enjoy the outdoors and especially mountains. We would be there the first part of November .

I’m not very familiar with sights within the Dolomites, although I’ve heard good things. It looks like the trains between Rome and the Dolomites are fairly slow and take 4 hours just to get to the close edge, so it’s worth checking into the transportation before you do much more planning. I wish I could help more and I’m sure you’ll find good advice elsewhere. -Roger

Hey Roger, I must say the post as well as your reply on each comments is commendable. I along with 3 friends(all below 30yrs old) are planning our first European trip from India for 10-11 days. Expected date will be during 15th Oct to 10th Nov. After googling as well as reading your various posts, it looks like Italy (Rome, Florence, Venice) is great choice. What other places would like to suggest to add in this? Please also suggest, if not Italy what other choice I can have.

Yes, I think Italy will be a great choice for a first trip to Europe and those three cities are the best choices. My general recommendation is 1 or 2 nights in Venice (it’s small and quite crowded so staying longer doesn’t really pay off), 3 nights in Florence, and 3 nights in Rome. That would give you 3 to 5 additional days on your trip. Since this is your first trip to Europe I’d highly recommend adding Paris for 3 or 4 days. You can fly there cheaply and quickly from Rome or Venice or Milan or Pisa (near Florence) and then fly back to Rome for your flight home.

Compared to your 8th, 9th, and 10th days in Italy, I think Paris would provide a lot more entertainment and diversity.

The other good options would be to add Switzerland by taking a train through the Alps to Interlaken for a few days . It’s amazingly scenic, but also very expensive.

Probably the cheapest and easiest option would be to add a few more days in Italy. Have a look at my suggestions for the best Italy itineraries for your best options. If you are adventurous I’d suggest exploring Naples, Pompeii, and staying in Sorrento for those days. But again, I think your best overall option would be to add Paris by flying in and out. Hello Roger. I am planning a trip to Europe with my wife and 6 year old daughter this November. I was planning for London, but I am told that days are very short in November in London and hence i wont be able to utilize time. What would be the next best destination? Italy? Spain? any other? Is Italy warmer than London? We will have about 8 to 9 days in hand for travel. Please suggest. Thanks in advance.

It’s true that London is so far north that the sun rises around 08:00 and sets around 16:30 in November, and it’s somewhat chilly as well, but it’s still a really fun place to visit during the winter and you’d have plenty of time to see the famous sights during the daytime. There is plenty to do after dark as well and the museums typically stay open until 17:30 even during the winter.

That said, you’ll find more daylight hours and milder weather in Italy or Spain. If you haven’t been to either of them I’d recommend Italy, as it’s much more impressive for the first-time visitor and it’s easier as well for those of us who don’t speak Spanish. The classic Italy itinerary is Rome, Florence, and Venice. In 8 days you could do 3 or 4 days in Rome, 3 or 4 days in Florence (including possible day trips to Pisa or Siena or Cinque Terre) and 1 or 2 days in Venice. @Roger thanks for the feedback ! I prefer Rome over Prague since am alone and can explore the historic stuff there .. also I think the weather in Rome can be a bit nicer I think ? Is taking a night train to Rome am better option than flying … because I couldn’t find a lot of flights late in night ! Also Rome can be intimidating in the sense of tourist ? Can you please shed some light on that ? Because I am more interested in Rome just to see the colosseum and Sistine chapel ! Please advise !

If you are more interested in the sights of Rome then I’d go there for sure, and the weather is almost certainly going to be a little nicer than Prague. Night trains are becoming less common all over Europe, mostly because of all the cheap flights. I’m not too fond of overnight trains for a few reasons, but if you find one you might enjoy it.

As far as Rome being a little intimidating, it’s mostly that it feels somewhat disorganized and crowded, especially when you first arrive. It’s a huge city and most locals speak little or no English, although obviously it’s got plenty of hotels catering to English speakers and at the tourist attractions you’ll find English signs and ticket sellers who speak enough English to help. You’ll be fine though so I wouldn’t worry about it. Prague is also quite crowded in its heart, and English isn’t too widely spoken, but it feels a bit easier because there are so many other English-speaking tourists around.

As mentioned, Prague has beautiful architecture and it’s a fun party city and at least a little cheaper than Rome, but Rome makes my list of 5 best European cities to visit , and Prague doesn’t. Let me know if you have any other questions. -Roger

I found this article great ! I am travelling to Germany (Munich) for work . I have time on weekend (Fri after work, Sat,Sun) to make a trip.I would want to catch a direct flight back to Dubai. Which place can you suggest ? Is Prague nice or Rome ? Am also concerned about travelling with all the luggage if on a train is that a problem ?

Thank you. You can go from Munich to Prague by train in about 5 hours, and I think that would be a great idea. You’d obviously have to fly to Rome, and taking the train is much more enjoyable and should also be cheaper (and a bit faster). Prague is a really gorgeous city and it’s one of Europe’s better party cities, so spending a weekend there will be fun.

The intercity trains like that are pretty good with having enough space for luggage, so it shouldn’t be a problem, but you’ll obviously want to pack as light as you can and keep an eye on your things.

Also, Rome is a very interesting city, but it’s also rather hectic and kind of intimidating. If you want to see the Coliseum and Trevi Fountain, go to Rome, but if you want to experience nightlife and have a fun weekend in an interesting place, I’d go to Prague. Europe’s abundance of destinations mean that there’s something to suit every taste and style throughout the continent – head to the Northern regions for snow and cosy vibes and Southern Europe for warm temperatures and almost deserted beaches!

Why visit Europe in November? 

November’s on the cusp of the winter months, and while you won’t find heat anywhere, the South does have warm weather. 

It might not be beach holiday, sunbathing and swimming in the Med weather, but the mild temperatures are conducive enough for picnicking on the beach and hiking! 

In fact, much of Europe can be far too warm in the peak summer months, and November’s usually the sweet spot before it starts cooling off from December to February. 

However, head north, and winter’s already in full swing. 

Iceland’s a popular destination in the winter, thanks to its northern lights and snow, and November’s generally the start of the big freeze here.

Tromsø in Norway’s also well worth visiting to learn about Sami culture, skiing and the Northern Lights .

1. Madeira, Portugal

Visiting Madeira in November ?

This Portuguese archipelago is well-known for its lush landscapes and subtropical climate; it sits in the Atlantic Ocean, further south than most of Mainland Europe, which keeps the climate fairly mild! 

In fact, while temperatures can dip, they are usually warm enough for outdoor activities, averaging between 17-22°C (63-72°F).

Visit Funchal, the capital, and explore its historic sites, such as the Sé Cathedral and the CR7 Museum.

November’s an ideal time for hiking enthusiasts to explore Madeira’s famous levadas , or irrigation channels, as the cooler weather makes for a more comfortable trek.

While rain is more likely in November, the showers generally pass quickly – and they also contribute to the island’s vibrant greenery!

Daytime temperatures in November range from 16-20°C (61-68°F). Evening temperatures can be cooler, so bring layers!

The quieter streets of Ibiza Town are dreamy in November. 

Visit the historic Dalt Vila, the fortified old town, and discover its cobblestone streets and majestic cathedral without the summer crowds.

November is shoulder season in Tirana, so you will find there are far fewer tourists in the city compared to the summer peak months when people pass through on their way to the Albanian Riviera.

Albania marks two important holidays during this month, Independence Day (November 28) and Liberation Day (November 29), which both bring decorations and festivities to the streets.

The biggest event in November is White Night, which also falls on November 29. The entire city of Tirana spills out onto the streets for this cultural bonanza, and all galleries and museums in the city – including BUNK’ART, the famous museum set in a nuclear bunker – are free to visit.

With average highs of 17°C and plenty of winter sunshine, November is also a great month for outdoor activities such as hiking around Dajti Mountain, accessible from the city centre by cable car.

Overnight, the mercury sinks as low as 6°C, perfect for cosying up with a glass of local wine at one of Tirana’s funky bars such as Komiteti Kafe Muzeum.

6. Piedmont, Italy 

If you’re a foodie looking for a unique November adventure in Europe, plan a visit to the beautiful and under-visited region of Piedmont (Piemonte) in northern Italy.

Long known as the world’s premier producer of Barolo wine, it is also famous for making chocolate in the capital city of Turin.

But one particular delicacy that grows prolifically here is the white truffle, a relatively rare and therefore expensive natural food that is celebrated every November at the prestigious International Alba White Truffle Fair .

Located an hour south of Turin by car, the city of Alba is worth visiting to attend the truffle festival and dine at local restaurants that serve it. Fall is the height of the harvest season in Piedmont and the Fair is a real highlight, especially for foodies.

You’ll learn the difference between black and the rare white truffles. When you see how truffle hunters work with trained “truffle dogs” to search and unearth these knotty morsels, you’ll understand why they are so expensive!

Throughout the multi-day festival, there are cooking classes, wine tastings, and vendors serving local cheeses, cured meats, chocolate, and of course local wine.

Even if you’re not a truffle lover or haven’t tried them before, the Alba Truffle Festival is the place for your taste buds to get acquainted with this wonderfully unique flavour.

7. Paris, France

There’s something special about Paris in November.

When the summer heat fades away, so do the tourist crowds.

Before the French capital gets busy again before the Christmas market and holiday rush, November is the ideal shoulder season to enjoy it in tranquillity. 

November is considered late autumn/ onset of winter, but it isn’t too chilly yet, with temperatures ranging between 6℃ and 11℃.

The crisp air calls for a trench coat and scarves, but you should still be able to take long walks by the Seine!

In fact, it’s the best time to appreciate and take on a French chic style!

As the cool autumn breeze blows, sip a cup of French hot chocolate at a cute terrace cafe.

Visit Carette in Trocadéro for its legendary chocolat chaud and macarons while relishing in a view of the Eiffel Tower. 

Paris is stunning year-round – but nature blesses the city with a breathtaking display of colours in November when the ginko trees transform the streets of Paris with a vibrant golden hue.

8. Bologna, Italy

There are two really good reasons to visit Bologna in November.

First, the colder weather is far less of a downside in Bologna than elsewhere.

Most of the streets have porticoes – covered walkways that date from the middle ages. This means that if there’s some rain, it won’t bother you too much!

Plus, cooler temperatures actually make one of the city’s most famous activities more comfortable.

The Portico of San Luca, Bologna is the world’s longest portico, a covered stretch of pavement, at 4km long.

This handsome portico stretches from Bologna city centre up into the hills outside Bologna, ending at the Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Luca.

There’s a religious procession from the church down to the city once a year.

But every day, locals and tourists do the walk in reverse, from the city up the hill.

And it’s not much fun on a hot day because half the route is unrelenting uphill steps. Doing this walk on a cooler day is much more sensible!

The second reason to visit Bologna in November relates to its foodie heritage.

Bologna lies at the heart of Emilia-Romagna, the Italian region from which we get Parma ham, Parmigiano Reggiano and Aceto Balsamico di Modena.

And in November, there’s a foodie festival in the Bolognese area: Tartufesta .

During this festival to celebrate the local white truffle that is found in the Bolognese hills, there are several events in the nearby towns, from October into November.

It’s similar to the festival in Piedmont; you could visit both on one trip!

I personally don’t have a taste for truffles, but I found the local foodie heritage and customs in Bologna fascinating.

And I really loved the food tour by Delicious Bologna – it’s really informative and involves tasting lots of local food and wine.

9. Burgundy

November’s the perfect time of year to explore the historic region of Burgundy, located in eastern France .

This is when the area of Beaujolais, which sits between Burgundy to the north and Rhône to the south, hosts the renowned Beaujolais Nouveau Festival .

It’s held on the third Thursday of November annually, to celebrate the first wine of the season.

The tradition originated in the 19th century when local vintners would compete to produce the first wine after harvest.

The rules surrounding the festival are strictly adhered to. All grapes must be harvested by hand, and the wine produced from the Gamay grape variety.

The Beaujolais Nouveau cannot be uncorked till precisely 12:01 a.m!

At that point, it’s released onto the market amid a flurry of celebrations and calls of “Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé!”.

It’s a lot of fun and normally accompanied by fireworks, good food, and of course, plenty of Beaujolais Nouveau!

In addition to the festival, Burgundy is famous for its historical sites, such as the cobbled streets of Dijon, where you can visit the Palace of the Dukes and the adjacent Musée des Beaux-Arts, one of the oldest museums in France.

And don’t forget a tour of the region’s vineyards to see how the wine is made, and to do a little tasting of your own.

10. Cadiz, Spain 

A trip to Cadiz in Andalusia, Spain during November is ideal for winter sunshine and blue waters! 

With daytime temperatures hovering between 15°C and 19°C, it’s one of the best Andalusian cities to explore! 

November’s lower visitor numbers give you a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and delve into the city’s rich history.

If avoiding crowds appeals, there’s an abundance of tranquil beaches and coastline stretching beyond the city limits, just waiting for your footsteps!

While in Cadiz, don’t miss out on the Old Town.

Here, you’ll find an array of plazas, historic structures, and civic landmarks like the Cathedral and City Hall.

For a change of scenery, you can head to the Malecon district to experience the bay-front castle, San Sebastian. Alternatively, a local train can whisk you off to various beaches around the city.

November also brings a line-up of local events. Look out for Dia de San Clemente festivities in honor of the patron saint of sailors and All Saints Day celebrations at the start of the month. 

Your visit wouldn’t be complete without sampling the local street food, exploring the numerous public markets and plazas, and letting yourself get lost in the labyrinthine alleys of the Old Town.

11. Budapest, Hungary

Hungary’s capital, Budapest, is one of those cities that can be visited year-round.

However, if you want to enjoy mild weather and a city that’s not overcrowded with tourists, make your way here in November.

At the start of the month, the autumn foliage is at its best.

The parks are glistening with shades of yellow, copper, and green as the leaves are quietly putting on their best display. 

While the city offers a lot of things to do and places to visit, most of the attractions are condensed along the banks of the Danube.

During a weekend in Budapest you can visit Buda Castle with its imposing Matthias Church and beautiful Fishermen Bastion.

Or, hike Gellert Hill to Citadella and enjoy some gorgeous views of Pest (Buda and Pest are the two sides of the city!). 

In Pest, visit the imposing Parliament Building and the Great Market Hall.

Hop on Metro line 1 and get off at Heroes Square or stroll down Andrassy Avenue.

At the end of the avenue, you’ll find the huge Heroes Square with statues and further down, the gorgeous Vajdahunyad Castle and its grounds (which, by the way, are superb in late autumn).

Staying longer? Plan for a couple of day trips.

Szentendre is easily reachable by HEV and can be visited in half a day. Enjoy this colorful village and stop for a nice cake at the Marzipan Museum.

And if you love wine, be sure to visit Eger, located about an hour by train from Budapest.

12. Ronda, Spain

Ronda in southern Spain is a wonderful November destination.

While the mornings and evenings are crisp, it’s gorgeous in the sun.

Fall colours are at their best in mid-November before the rain starts – plus, the walk down to the viewpoint of the New Bridge is beautiful at this time of the year!

Gardens between the New Bridge and the Old Bridge are glorious in November.

Don’t miss the attractions in the Old Town like the Arab Baths and old castle walls!

This is also where to stay in Ronda if you want to be in the middle of the medieval town. However, cross the bridge and look for a place to stay there if you prefer having the hippest bars and restaurants at your doorstep.

You find most of them along the pedestrian street. Mid-November is also the best time of the year to chase fall colors in Bosque de Cobre (Copper Forest) which is in Valle del Genal.

There are several hikes you can do through the orange blanket of chestnut trees covering the valley and it is one of the best places to see fall colors in southern Spain.

13. Lagos, Portugal

Located in the Algarve region of Portugal, Lagos is an excellent location for beautiful beaches and mild weather outside of summer.

A wonderful town for winter sun – with some of the best weather in mainland Europe in November – Lagos is optimum for hiking, surfing and even relaxing on the beach. 

Walk on the boardwalks to see the famous Ponta Piedade or even hike all the way on the cliffs to the town of Luz!

Temperatures creep up to 22°C (72°F) in November; which is summer conditions elsewhere in Europe!

Several boat tours from Lagos still depart from the marina in November.

But, as it’s the off-season in the Algarve, there will be fewer tourists compared to the summer months!

This means that accommodation is significantly less expensive in this popular holiday location.

14. Zermatt, Switzerland

For an early season of snowflakes, snowboarding, skiing and making snow angels, one of the best places you can visit is Zermatt.

Located in the heart of the Swiss Alps and the Valais canton of Switzerland, Zermatt in November is beautiful place to be.

November is usually the opening month of the winter season, once the area gets a good snowfall. Which makes it great for not being so touristic. Not all will be open, but its just as special as any other season.

Top wintery things you must do while visiting Zermatt include dining at a cosy local restaurant (with gluhwein!), taking the stunning red Gornergrat train to 3,135 meter elevation, and of course taking the Matterhorn Glacier Express from the village to the very top peak of the Kleine Matterhorn (including skiing from here!).

On a clear day, the views are truly stunning at the top. You can even consider visiting the additional ski mountain station at the Testa Grigia.

For the local ski and chairlifts, you can book your tickets in advance via the Zermatt Tourism website, else to buy a ticket on the day of arrival at the entrance area in Zermatt.

Though it’s advised to buy in advance and enjoy a wonderful wintery time in this picturesque location.

Looking for Christmas vibes before the start of the peak season? Head to Oslo in Norway!

Starting in mid-November, Oslo sets up its annual Christmas Market along the main street, Karl Johan Street.

Here, you’ll find tons of wooden stalls selling traditional food, warm drinks, and hand-crafted souvenirs!

During November, the city’s average high is 4°C (40°F) and an average low is 0°C(32°F) – comparatively warmer than the following months!

Tour from Athens to Belgrade: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days

Wonderful tour of Balkans! Montenegro, Bosnia, Kosovo, and Albania were new to us. Each day was well planned with interesting sites to explore: old historic centers/ museums/ castles/ churches/ mosques/ markets. Hotels were well located and offered delicious breakfasts. Fabio our guide and driver was excellent and taught us the history of all the sights that we visited. We will recommend this tour to family and friends.

All About Balkans (4 Star Hotels)

The itinerary was incredible. We saw magnificent places we would have never visited on our own. Tour guide Simone was great, knowledgeable, and always made sure we don't get lost. Local guides were excellent too. Pace was not too intense, allowing us to enjoy each location and have some free time. Thank you, Chris, our excellent driver through tough mountain terrain. CONS: Travel Talk still advertise that the Group Size is 13-35. In reality, the bus was packed full, 48 participants. Travel Talk should change this false advertisement because it is misleading. Hotels were of excellent quality and location, in each place, EXCEPT one: Hotel Central Park in Trebinje. It was disgusting. The minute we entered the hotel we were attacked by a huge smoking Lobby with tens of people smoking everywhere, and it was the same smell in the hallways and inside the rooms! Even the linen smelled like cigarettes. Within two minute your hair and clothes were soaked with smell of ashtray. We all commented on how terrible it was. Breakfast was bad or rather, there was nothing there. Travel Talk should take snot contract with this hotel. It merits one star. They should choose another, since we stayed there for two nights. Everyone complained about this hotel smell everywhere and all the time. Otherwise, I would have given this trip 5 stars.

Anatolian Civilizations | 10 Days

My son and I had a great time during this tour. Everything was arranged very well. We had an English speaking guide who had so much knowledge, and made everything easy for us. The old historical sites we visited were very interesting and beautiful. Our group was small, 14 people, which was really nice. The hotels were all good, some were extra good with fitness or swimmingpools, which my son liked a lot.

Balkan Discovery (4 Star Hotels)

I went on this trip in mid October and surprisingly the weather was great enough for swimming. Simon was my guide with Chris as our bus driver. Simon was very informative and extremely nice throughout the whole trip. I really felt like I received a great introduction to the land and its people. Chris made sure we took comfort breaks every couple to few hours so that everyone had a chance to regroup. The first couple of days were short as it required some long hours of driving, but it was all worth it. Also, I had the pleasure of meeting wonderful travelers from university students to grandparents, though the group skewed to the former. Pay for all the extra excursions, especially the nature ones!

Tour from Athens to Dubrovnik or Split: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days

This tour exceeded our expectations. The history of these countries is very interesting. The cities and towns we visited were fascinating. The scenery of mountains, lakes and coast was beautiful. We saw wonderful churches, mosques, monasteries, bazaars, castles, forts and walled cities. Our guide Sokol was great fun to be with. Before booking this trip, we had lots of questions, which were answered by Sirma from the CHOOSE BALKANS team promptly and with the information we had requested. As tourism is increasing in these countries, visiting at this point in time was magical. The use of local hotels was nice. This was a special trip that we highly recommend, and will stay in our minds for a long time.

Rome to Berlin: Piazzas, Prague & the Past

Great diversity of countries and cities but WAY too fast paced. One night in Slovenia and Poland was ridiculous and with travel time some days we spent less than 15 hours in the city. The guide was a but inexperienced so we didn't have a good description of some of the cities. Great way to make friends and see cities! Would recommend going end of August or later as it was still very hot going through the cities!!

Vienna to Tirana: Tour of Central Europe & the Balkans in 14 days

Peja, Gjakova and Prizren are highlights of Kosovo. We enjoyed everything from this tour. Our tour guide made it a great experience. We were amazed from history and culture of Kosovo. Strongly recommend this tour.

Me and my wife had such a great time on this tour. We had the chance to visit such an interesting country as Albania and learn a lot about its history. We especially loved Voskopoja. Grand Odyssey: Tour of Enchanting Balkans & Central Europe in 14-Days

3 days of tour to the South Of Albania ???????? but felt like 3 weeks. First of all I would like to start by saying a big thank you to the choose Balkans tour operator as we have changed our tour the last minute since my partner had no visa to enter North Macedonia. Despite that within a mins time they put us on new one and it was just super. 3 days of visiting 2 UNESCO sites, hiking and splashing before the end at the Mediterranean Sea. Best Places To Visit In Europe In November

I have asked some of the best travel bloggers and travel experts their opinion about the best European destinations in November. They include cities and towns, both familiar and a little bit off the beaten path. In some cases, they also include national parks or regions that have so much to offer during the colder months, it is impossible to only recommend one spot.

When relevant, annual special events or festivals in November are featured, making a visit at that time of year extra special. For each destination, average temperatures for the month are highlighted. However, it is an average. Expect temperatures at the beginning of the month to be higher than average, and then those days at the end of the month, lower than average. Lastly, if any of the travel bloggers have found amazing accommodation or a favourite hotel, I’ve included those recommendations as well.

Asturias, Spain

Asturias, Spain’s northern region, is considered an underrated gem by those that have traveled there. It is a region of delicious regional cuisine, crisp wines and an amazing alcoholic cider known as “sidra” which is served from over 3 feet in the air into a cup without ever spilling a drop! This is done to aerate the drink for maximum taste. Drinking sidra is as much a cultural affirmation as it is a common thirst quencher.

Asturias is one of the best places to visit in Europe and November is the best time to visit. You can take a road trip in mild weather and without tourists.

There are many beautiful and historic  sights to see in Asturias. One of the most culturally significant is on the outskirts of the capital city of Oviedo. This is a beautiful town with medieval streets, interesting architecture and a lively nightlife. Oviedo is also an ancient town that was once the home of Asturian royalty. You can still see well-preserved palaces and churches dating back to the 9 th  Century which are today UNESCO World Heritage sites.   

The cathedral of Oviedo, Catedral Metropolitana Basilica de San Salvador, is a beautiful mishmash of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Romanesque architecture which explodes across a wide plaza in the center of the city.

For an ideal traditional Asturian evening, head to Gascona Street. Here you will find local restaurants lining both sides of the street. Inside, the restaurants vie with each other to offer the best regional cuisine like the Fabada Asturiana, a hearty stew of meats and vegetables. Local musicians will arrive at the restaurants to play their instruments and the waiters will serve sidra. Soon the patrons join in singing the traditional Asturian songs. It is a great way to really experience the Asturian culture.

It is easy to get to Asturias. Most international flights will arrive at Madrid or Barcelona. From there, it is a cheap and quick connection to the Asturias airport and a 20-minute ride to Oviedo’s city center.

There are countless things to do in London , but try to arrive in time to watch the streets decorated with Christmas lights. For the best Christmas lights in London , make sure to stop by Oxford Street and Regent Street. Both of these streets are known for their shopping year around, but the Christmas lights turn them into magical spots where you can take some beautiful photos.

Regent Street is known for the angels that make up the Spirit of Christmas display while Oxford Street changes their decor more often. Both places are beautiful but get busy closer to Christmas. If you can visit towards the end of November, you’ll get the best of the Christmas displays without the heavy crowds.

Visiting in November also means you can delight in unique dining experiences like eating in one of the igloo restaurants that pop up during the winter. Coppa Club’s Tower Bridge igloos are among the most famous and give you a wonderful view of Tower Bridge as you dine in the warmth of an igloo.

Lucerne, Switzerland

If you love nature and looking for one of the best places to visit in Europe, consider Lucerne. Located at the northern part of Lake Lucerne, this small Swiss city is one of the most  beautiful places to visit in Switzerland .

This picturesque town can be visited all year around. However, November is the best time of year when you see less crowds and the weather is perfect to explore the town and its surrounding mountains.

Lucerne is known for its stunning medieval architecture and the iconic Chapel Bridge. This historic wooden construction over the Reuss River makes it an architectural masterpiece and one of the best tourist spots in Lucerne. Next visit the Lion Monument which is just a short walk from the Chapel Bridge. This iconic monument was created as a dedication to Swiss soldiers who lost their lives during the French Revolution. 

When you are in Switzerland, you shouldn’t miss the Swiss Alps. Book day trips to Mount Titlis and Mount Pilatus from Lucerne. Both are incredibly beautiful, but if you have time constraints, I would recommend visiting Mount Titlis. The cable car journey to the top will give you a 360-degree view of the Alps. There are amazing activities to do on Mount Titlis, such as the cliff walk and glacier cave.

In November, expect temperatures to be an average of 8 o C or 46 o F.

Zurich international airport is the nearest airport to Lucerne. It is just 55 km away and well connected with Lucerne by road and rail. For a cost efficient way to get around, purchase a “Tell Pass” for travel on all public transportation.

The Cyclades Islands in Greece are arguably the most stunning islands in the Mediterranean. Created by volcanic activity, they are dotted around the dreamy blue Aegean sea like confetti. The island landscapes are often craggy and dramatic, and the towns are gorgeous: white-washed houses and car-free paved streets, brought to life with brightly painted doors and glorious Bougainvillea flowers. 

They are amazing to visit at any time of year because they are so naturally beautiful. However, November is a great time to visit because there are no crowds. Hordes of tourists are the number one complaint during peak season in Santorini and Mykonos, the two most popular Greek islands in the Cyclades chain. But if you visit off-season, you will avoid dealing with crowds and also benefit from lower prices.

It is likely the sea may be too cold for a swim, so when you are not sitting by the pool, your activities will most likely be focused on nature and enjoying the picturesque towns and museums. You can marvel at the epic volcanic caldera on Santorini island, enjoy the peaceful towns on Paros island or wander the ancient ruins on Delos island which is reachable by boat. 

Temperatures in the Cyclades are around 17-18 degrees Celsius or 68 o degrees Fahrenheit in November. 

There are international airports on Santorini and Mykonos. Ferry itineraries between the islands may be reduced in November and some restaurants may be closed. However, you could avoid that by taking a small ship tour and go  island-hopping in the Cyclades .

Turin, Italy

Turin is an incredible destination in Northern Italy. The first Italian capital holds so much history, culture, and good food that any traveler would be delighted with its discoveries. In addition, it is one of the best places to visit in Europe in November. 

Autumn is magical in Turin, and in November, the city is still covered in yellow and red leaves. The weather is cool and also great for enjoying outdoor activities. As the Italian Alps surround the city, nature is gorgeous during this time of the year. 

There are easy hiking trails less than 30 minutes from the city center. Experienced hikers can take day trips and venture into the countryside to reach peaks over 2,600 meters above sea level like the Puta Quattro Sorelle in Bardonecchia, just one hour and a half by train.

For culture and art lovers, November is the best time to visit as the city hosts two world-famous contemporary art events. Artissima and Paratissima attract artists and visitors from all over Europe, and Turin breathes arts. Expositions, open-air installations, music, and theater combined create an artistic vibe that takes over the whole city. 

There are also plenty of things to do in Turin, incredible museums and over 20 royal palaces to visit, vintage markets, and delicious food to taste. Turin is the capital of the Piemonte region, famous for its Barolo Wine, Slow Food Movement, truffles, chocolates, and vermouth. There are endless reasons to visit Turin, and the best one is that it’s not packed with tourists like other major Italian destinations. 

With an average temperature of 12 o C or 54 o F, Turin in November gives you the good feeling that winter is around the corner.

Reaching Turin is easy. Torino-Caselle Airport is connected to Turin city center by train and shuttle buses. Another option is to fly to one of the three airports in Milan. Then from Milan to Turin by train is just one hour. Many people do it daily, commuting for work or going for a one-day trip to the cities.

Sibenik in Croatia  is a picturesque coastal town and definitely one of the most beautiful places to visit in Europe in November. Famous because of the television series Game of Thrones , countless tourists from all over the world come here to explore the picturesque old town. However, at the beginning of November, Sibenik becomes very quiet and idyllic. It is a great time to explore the city unencumbered with crowds.

When visiting in November, guests can expect a fabulous selection of activities and attractions in this charming coastal town. The absolute highlight is the medieval old town. A walking tour takes you on a journey back in time, strolling through winding stone streets while discovering beautiful historical attractions.

One of the most important places to see is the Cathedral of St. James, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the most important Renaissance building in the entire country. It was built entirely of stone and erected between the 15th and 16th centuries. Inside you will find a baptismal font of the cathedral beautifully decorated with the figures of God and angels. Make sure you leave time to stop and visit inside.

Also worth exploring are the 3 fortresses around the city, from which you can enjoy breathtaking views over Sibenik and the beautiful blues of the Adriatic Sea.

A beautiful place to explore in November is the nature reserve Sv. Ante where visitors will enjoy a grandiose coastal panorama while walking along the canal.

Getting to Sibenik is easy. The nearest international airport is in the city of Split, about 90 kilometers away. From there, you can either take a public bus, hire a car or take a taxi.

Vienna, one of the most livable cities in world , is the perfect place to visit in Europe in November to experience the end of fall and the beginning of winter. You’ll still be able to see some fall foliage in places like Burggarten and the gardens of the UNESCO-listed Schönbrunn Palace. Yet, you’ll already be able to enjoy Vienna’s Christmas markets, some of which open in the last 10-12 days of November.

Though you’ll find plenty of small, cozy markets scattered around Vienna, don’t miss the city’s biggest Christmas market, Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt , held in city hall square. Apart from all the stalls, you’ll find a huge ice skating rink, a Ferris wheel, Christmas-themed displays, and much more.

Beyond that, there’s much more popular destinations to include on your  Vienna itinerary . It is home to beautiful sights like the Belvedere Palace, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Karlskirche, and the Vienna State Opera. It’s also where you can visit world-class museums like the Museum of Art History (Kunsthistorisches Museum) and the Albertina.

If you’re a coffee or dessert addict, you’ll also love the countless coffee and pastry shops found everywhere. They are a huge part of Vienna’s history and culture. With countless cafes some of which are more than 100 years old, there’s no better place to indulge in an espresso and decadent Austrian cakes and strudels. Fly directly into Vienna’s airport (VIE), located only 18 km outside of the city center. It is about 30 minutes to drive to the center city. Alternatively, you can take an airport bus or train transfer to connect directly with Vienna’s metro line.

Nice, France

Nice is the beating heart of the French Riviera and a great place to vacation in southern Europe for anyone looking for a coastal getaway. Even in November, the weather is balmy. It is the perfect weather to explore without having to contend with the heaving throngs of summer crowds.   

Nice has so many charms , but it is certainly hard to pass up a stroll along the city’s famous Promenade des Anglais which is a large walkway running parallel to the twinkling blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea and Nice’s beaches. Cap off the walk with a trip up to the Colline due Château found in the old town at one end of the Promenade to get a bird’s eye view of the spectacular stretch of coast. You won’t want to leave.

Once you’ve lapped up the beauty, stop in at the iconic Negresco Hotel. The pink-domed luxury hotel is a famous sight in the French Riviera. Though accommodation may not suit your budget, it is possible to have a drink at the hotel bar. You then have permission to enter the hotel’s common areas for a sneak peek at this stunning hotel.

You’ll need to fly into Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, which has its own tram line that connects visitors with the centre of the city. Alternatively, it is a 15 minutes drive to Nice’s central square, Place Massena.

Venice, Italy

With the winding cobblestone alleyways, slow curving canals, and baroque architecture, Venice is a picture to behold. It is one of Europe’s most beautiful places and November is the best time visit. The city experiences a mass exodus of tourists, mild temperatures, and an uptick of festivities as the holiday season sets in.

One of the main attractions in Venice in November is the Madonna Della Salute Festival . This is comprised of a large feast and procession of thousands of people to the Salute Church. This festival is held to celebrate the Virgin Mary’s intervention to end the plague in 1630. 

If you miss this, Venice has so much more to offer. Start your Venice itinerary in the famous St. Mark’s Square where the Saint Mark’s Basilica looms in all of its white stone and gold opulence. Check out the four horses inside that were plundered from Constantinople during the crusades in 1204. Move on to the Doge’s Palace, with cavernous rooms with intricate artwork and marbled hallways. Make sure to walk over the Bridge of Sighs, where prisoners would see their last view of the beauty of Venice.

Wander toward the Rialto Bridge, the white stone architectural marvel with enclosed shops lining each side that spans the Grand Canal. It connects the districts of San Marco and San Polo. Take a moment and have a drink or cup of coffee at the Piazza San Marco and people watch.

If you are arriving from outside of Italy, you will land at the Marco Polo Airport (VCE). From here you can take a 35-minute water taxi ride towards the historic city centre of Venice. It is one of the best ways to introduce yourself to the romantic capital.

Porto, Portugal

Porto is one of Portugal’s most attractive cities and one of the best places to visit in Europe in November. This is the birthplace and home to the famous Portuguese wine called port which is made in the nearby Duoro valley.

Porto is all about incredible architecture and historic places. There are plenty of things to see and do in this beautiful place so try to allocate several days here. See the famous blue churches which are tiled with the iconic azulejos, elaborate blue tiles which make Porto iconic.

Of course, you have to visit the Dom Luis II bridge which connects the old town of Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia. The best way to reach the top level is to purchase a ticket on the cable car which even includes vouchers for free port tastings. After a quick ride, you’ll reach the top of the bridge where the views are fantastic. Afterwards, come to the Vila Nova de Gaia neighbourhood for a wine tasting or tours of secluded wine cellars.

In the evenings you should have dinner by the river and enjoy the lively atmosphere as boats pass by.

In November the weather in Porto is still relatively mild with an average temperature of 17 o C or 63 o F. You’ll find far fewer tourist crowds making it the perfect time to visit.

The closest international airport is Francisco Sa Carneiro which is 10km from the city center, an easy 20 minute taxi or metro ride.

Zakopone, Poland

Zakopane is a unique town located at the edge of Tatra National Park in southern Poland. It is a well known destination in Poland due to its highlander style architecture, traditional specialities and last but not least, its proximity to the mighty Tatra mountains. 

There is so much to see and do when visiting Zakopane . First of all, wander around the town to admire the architecture, including its oldest street Koscieliska. There you will find a small chapel and Pęksowy Brzyzek National Cemetery . This is a real gem and you should not miss it! The graveyard and its tombs are like walking in an art exhibit.

Undoubtedly, the biggest magnet for visitors to Zakopane are the highest mountains in Poland – Tatra. Tatra National Park offers kilometres of paths of varied difficulty. 

In the summer months Zakopane and the park are very busy. However, in the fall, in particular November, the area becomes noticeably quieter. In addition, for those who visit in November, the mountains have a special treat for you. The hilltop grass becomes rusty orange and red providing a feast for the eyes. The most spectacular hikes to take to admire these colors is Czerwone Wierchy and all Western Tatra peaks.

The best way to get there is to fly to Krakow and then hop on a bus. The bus journey takes about 2h and ends in the centre of town.

Seville, Spain

Seville is a great place to visit in southern Europe and November is the best time. The main reason is the weather. Seville is one of the hottest cities in Spain. Summer temperatures can reach 40-45 o C (104-114 o F) which is sweltering. However, in November, the weather is perfect. It’s great for long walks around the city and sightseeing. It is still very sunny, and you can even sunbathe. What’s more, the city is less crowded, so you can admire the amazing architectural monuments of Seville without standing in long lines. It also offers the perfect light for photos.

There are many exceptional places to see while in Seville. The palace complex Alcázar (Spanish: Reales Alcázares) is one of Seville’s greatest treasures. The Alcázar was the seat of Arab rulers, and after the Reconquest, it was taken over and rebuilt by Christian rulers. To this day, the Spanish Royal Family has its seat on the upper floor, making the Royal Alcázar the longest-functioning royal residence in the world. Alcazar is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The Cathedral of Our Lady in Seville (Spanish: Catedral de Santa María de la Sede de Sevilla) is a Gothic cathedral built on the site of a mosque. The cathedral is the largest and one of the greatest Gothic churches in the world. The mosque remains are the Giralda bell tower (a former minaret) and the Patio de Los Naranjos. But the place that attracts the most tourists is the Tomb of Christopher Columbus.

Spain Square (Spanish: The Plaza de España) is a plaza in the Parque de María Luisa (Maria Luisa Park), amazing for walking. It was built in 1928 for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. 

After exploring these unique architectural monuments, sit down in one of the many Andalusian bars for delicious tapas and a glass of wine.

Seville-San Pablo Airport is the closest international airport located 10 kilometers northeast of the city center. Another great choice is Malaga Airport, located 2 hours (200 km) from Seville, if you prefer a road trip.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Reykjavik is the capital of Iceland and one of the best places to visit in Europe in November. It is the perfect base for an Icelandic winter adventure, from chilling in the Blue Lagoon to sampling the local cuisine. November is also one of the best months to see the Northern Lights!

A trip to the Blue Lagoon is on the bucket list of many travellers. Located just 40 minutes from Reykjakvik, the Blue Lagoon is a geothermal hot spring known to have lots of wonderful health benefits, such as improved skin and circulation. There’s something special about visiting in November, where you can escape the cold winter air in the comforting warmth of the lagoon.

Easy to locate from Reykjavik, The Golden Circle consists of Þingvellir National Park, Geysir Geothermal Area, and Gullfoss waterfall. November is a great time to visit the Golden Circle with the fantastic golden hour lighting that reflects off the icy lakes. If you’re lucky, you may even spot rainbows coming out of the Gullfoss Waterfall.

There are a number of Icelandic dishes which you must try while in this unique city – from delicious fresh fish to Reykvajik’s hot dog (pylsur). To warm up on a cold day in November, try Brennivin. An Icelandic favourite, it’s a strong spiced spirit and its name comes from the phrase ‘burning wine’.

With an average temperature of 4 o C or 39 o F, you will need to pack warm clothes to enjoy these amazing experiences.

Almost all international flights land at Keflavík International Airport, 31 miles from Reykjavik (about a 45 minute drive). You can book the Flybus from the airport, which operates everyday all year long. Alternatively, you can hire a taxi.

Milos, Greece

Milos is one of the most underrated Greek islands situated in the Cyclades. If you’re looking for a perfect destination to visit in Europe for a winter getaway in the sun, Milos ticks all the boxes. 

November in Milos is well past the tourist season, which means you can enjoy this stunning island without the crowds. In addition, you will also be able to catch some great bargains for your accommodation. The weather is still pleasant, perfect for renting a car and exploring the island.

Eat the delicious fresh seafood at one of the seafront restaurants in Adams. Visit the ancient Plaka for some incredible panoramic views of the entire island and to learn more about Milos’ heritage. For the history enthusiasts, there is Plaka Castle and the Archaeological Museum. Check out the traditional fishing village of Klima, and for beachgoers, there is Serakiniko beach with a moon-like landscape. 

The temperatures is around 18 degrees Celsius or 64 degrees Fahrenheit.

To get to Milos, fly to Athens International Airport, where you can catch a local connecting flight to Milos or take a direct ferry across to the island.

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is the capital of Hungary, one of the cheapest places you can visit in Europe, and full of life. It is a great city in Eastern Europe where there are plenty of things to do like exploring the magnificent old town, relaxing in spas, or enjoying the lively nightlife.

As Budapest is full of many interesting sites , you should take a guided tour so that you can easily see the main ones. You can take a paid or free walking tour depending on your personal taste.

Hungarians are known for their thermal spa culture. It’s the central leisure activity for the locals. Luckily, there are a couple of spas around Budapest. Széchenyi is Budapest’s largest thermal bath complex and is located near Budapest’s City Park. Soaking in the warm water in the middle of November is an ideal way to spend an afternoon.

The main landmark in Budapest is the Citadel. It’s located at the top of the hill, right next to the Donau river and city center. It’s relatively easy to walk up to the Citadel and from there, you can enjoy beautiful views of Budapest.

In November, you can also attend festivals like St. Martin’s Day Wine Festival. The country’s finest wineries gather at Gellert Hotel to present their production to visitors. In addition, you can attend St. Martin’s Day Goose Festival. Visitors can taste traditional Hungarian cuisine, including goose dishes. 

November in Budapest is off-season, with fewer crowds, and even more affordable prices. It’s the perfect time of the year to come and explore.

Montepulciano, Italy

The Tuscan town of Montepulciano is stunning all year round, but it’s particularly beautiful in the fall. The foliage changes colour and there’s a special crispness to the air. The medieval town centre is framed by the Tuscan hills and the vineyards are bustling at harvest time.

Spend your time exploring the streets of the historic town, relaxing in the Piazza Grande with coffee or a glass of wine, or visiting the local churches and museums. If you enjoy red wine, this is the perfect spot for you, with several wineries worth a visit.

Montepulcino’s Fortress is another popular attraction with views over the Val di Chiana, the Val d’Orcia, and up to Lake Trasimeno. In November, time your visit with the Toscana Gustando food and wine festival, which focuses on a different Italian region each year.

If you can, take your time to relax in the small town and use it as a base for day trips to the surrounding countryside. Montepulciano is a great place for  slow travel . With fewer visitors and the harvest just about finished, November is a good time to immerse yourself in the local way of life. 

With average temperatures at 13 o C or 55 o F, it is lovely weather to walk and explore.

Montepulciano’s closest international airport is in Florence, where you can pick up your Italian rental car . It which takes about an hour and a half by car.

Dublin, Ireland

Dublin is the charming and historic capital of Ireland and one of the best cities to visit in Europe in November. The trees are beautifully colored into fall foliage and prices are much lower compared to the summer high season. For whiskey lovers, there is the annual Whiskey Live event where you can try lots of different whiskeys.

There are some fun and interesting things to do in Dublin. First, consider visiting Trinity College to see Kells’ book, a 9th century manuscript that documents the four Gospels of the life of Jesus Christ. It is considered Ireland’s greatest cultural treasure and the world’s most famous medieval manuscript. While there, you can also visit the long room. This is considered one of the most beautiful libraries in the world with towering bookcases that are amazing to see.

At St. Patrick Cathedral, you can enjoy a beautiful square and admire the inside of the cathedral. Make sure you take a look at the intricacies of the benches where important decisions used to be made by the priests.

One of the best things that you can do is go on a musical pub tour . This two hour event is fun and appropriate for all family members. You visit 3-4 pubs with two or three exceptionally talented musicians who sing beautiful Irish songs on traditional Irish instruments (many of which you will have never seen before) and tell lovely Irish stories.

Dublin can be reached by flying to Dublin airport. Next, you travel to the center of Dublin by bus or taxi. For the bus, you need to go to Terminal 1’s exit where you will see bus stops on your left. You can use Airlink and Aircoach for a return ticket. Normally, a bus ride takes 40 minutes. Airlink is slightly faster than Aircoach during traffic jams, as it can use a tunnel in certain areas.

For central accommodation walking distance to most Dublin attractions, find something near Temple Bar.

Puerto De La Cruz, Spain (Canary Islands)

The Canary Islands are well known for the sun-and-sangria resorts lining its southern shores. For a more traditional Spanish base, choose the northern town of Puerto de la Cruz. Visit in November to avoid the busy and hot summer months.

One of the  best things to do in Puerto de la Cruz  is to visit the small but perfectly formed Jardín Botánico. Conceived as a temporary resting place for exotic plant species on their journey between the Americas and the Far East, this now permanent sub-tropical wonderland is perfect for a stroll.

Puerto de la Cruz has a burgeoning street art scene. Thanks to a programme to improve the urban environment, the streets of the old town have been transformed into an open-air art gallery. Pick up a street art map from the Tourist Information Office and spend a couple of hours exploring and finding some hidden gems.

For an afternoon of sun and leisure, spend some time at the black beaches of Playa Jardin or the swimming pool complex of Lago Martianez.

In November, enjoy average temperatures of 25 o C or 77 o F.

International flights land at Tenerife South Airport, also known as Tenerife South-Reina Sofia Airport. From here, it’s under an hour’s drive to Puerto de la Cruz.

Ljubljana, Slovenia

Ljubljana is a small, charming city and the capital of Slovenia . This is a lively student city with a lot of history, impressive architecture, a bustling bar and restaurant scene. There is also lots of greenery, so much so that it won the Green Capital of Europe award in 2016.

Lbjubljana is one of the best places to visit in Europe in November because it offers beautiful walks and superb art galleries and museums. Most importantly, every November, it hosts a wide range of culinary and gastronomic events as part of the November Gourmet Ljubljana Food and Wine Festival.

The historic centre of Ljubljana is a pedestrian only zone which only adds to the charm. One of the best things to do is stroll through the old town. Walking alongside the river Ljubljanica, you’ll be able to admire the many beautiful bridges and colorful baroque facades. Make sure to find Preseren square and the Tripple bridge.

The Ljubljana castle, perched atop a hill in the middle of the city, is a fabulous sight from all direction. It is an easy 15 minute walk up, or quick gondola ride.

Another interesting activity is to take a street art tour where you will see some fantastic crazy art in the walking zone and across the river in Metelkova. You will also learn about Slovenia’s more recent history including the war in the 1990s.

If you prefer to avoid outside, there are plenty of art galleries and museums to visit. Plecnik House will give you an introduction to Slovenia’s most famous architect and the man behind some of the most prominent buildings in Ljubljana.

The Modern Art Gallery showcases Slovene artworks from the 20th and 21st century, including photography, videography and digital art. Then there’s the National Gallery and the Slovenian Etnographic Museum which are also fabulous if you’d like to dive deeper into Slovene history and culture.

If you’d like to enjoy some milder weather, a day trip to the charming coastal town of Piran should be on your itinerary. The Slovene coast enjoys beautiful weather all the way into late fall.

When you fly to Ljubljana, you will actually fly into the countryside. From there, you have to catch a bus or a shuttle which will take you into the city centre in about 20-30 minutes.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is a magnificent city to visit in any season but it would have to be one of the best places to visit in Europe in November. In November, the weather is still beautiful with lots of sunny days. It is also quieter than most months with many people waiting until December to visit for the Christmas markets.

There are  so many things to do in Lisbon  that you are spoilt for choice. From castles that overlook the city to amazing food, you will definitely find your days filled.

If you love museums the Maritime Museum is a must. Set in a large building, you will discover many wonderful artifacts leftover from Portuguese fleets that discovered much of the world. In the last building, you will see replicas of some of these ships in all of their glory.

If you love sea life, then the Oceanarium should also be at the top of your list. This amazing aquarium boasts some of the most stunning exhibits from all over the world. The otters really do steal the show though!

History is in abundance in the city with the ruins of the Carmo Convent and the magnificent Igreja de Sao Roque church with its chapel that was blessed by a Pope.

Day trips from Lisbon should also be high on your Lisbon itinerary. Evora is one of the best. You can visit the fascinating yet dark Bone Chapel as well as a Spanish Inquisition Museum before having a rest in the shadows of an ancient Roman temple, the Temple of Diana.

Sintra, the summer playground for the Portuguese elite, is another amazing day trip. Royal palaces like Pena Palace (one of the brightest castles you will ever see) and the ruins of the Moorish Castle are highlights of a trip there.

You can easily fly into Lisbon Airport and catch a train into the city. Just remember that Lisbon is a very hilly city and you don’t want to be carrying a lot of luggage with you.

Prague, Czech Republic

Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic. A city of squares, towers and bridges, it is a delight to stroll along the medieval cobblestoned lanes of Prague’s Old Town in November. Occasionally dusted by snow, its’ Gothic, Baroque and medieval buildings and churches have an otherworldly air. In November, the throngs of tourists are largely gone and you can finally spend a few days enjoying this magnificent city.

Within the main square of the Old Town are medieval attractions, such as the Church of Our Lady Before Týnn and the Old Town Hall. It’s possible to wander into several parts of the majestic Town Hall that was built in 1338 and dominates the square. On one side of the building is the Astrological Clock where you can easily watch beautiful figures dance upon the hour.

Prague Castle and Charles Bridge are also important central attractions. The mighty Castle is 1000 years old. It takes up a whole district with churches, palaces and museums.

The Charles Bridge provides one of the greatest ‘wow’ moments in travel. Built between 1357 and 1400 across the Vltava River, it is lined with life-size statues and monuments and has the feel of an epic Harry Potter landscape. In the summer, you are literally elbow to elbow with tourists. In November, you should be able to spend as much time as you want comfortably exploring this beautiful bridge. There are wonderful views and wonderful photos to take.

At the end of the Charles Bridge is the sprawling Strahov monastery and the impossibly stunning Strahov Library. It is the best of the  Prague libraries  and considered to be one of the world’s most beautiful.

The average temperature in November is 8 o C or 46 o F. There are still 8 or 9 hours of daylight and the middle of the day is often clear and sunny.

Prague is serviced by Vaclav Havel International airport, about 20 kilometers away.

For a decadent treat, stay at the Four Seasons Hotel Prague. It exudes old world charm and luxury, and has an exceptional location.

Staffordshire, England

One of the best places to visit in Europe in November is Staffordshire, England. Staffordshire itself is a county in the West Midlands with several towns worthy of a visit. The most famous is Stratford-upon-Avon as this is the birthplace of Sir William Shakespeare.

Stratford-upon-Avon is a medieval market town. It has many different tributes, statues and museums dedicated to the famous play writer, so you’ll be able to immerse yourself in Shakespearean history. If you visit in November, you will also have the added bonus of the Christmas markets that have started to light up the town.

However, if you’re looking for some adrenaline activities , then Staffordshire is the perfect base to visit Alton Towers Amusement Park. While the park is open for most of the year, November is particularly special as the first weekend hosts Guy Fawkes Day with the ultimate firework spectacular.

If you’re not familiar with this celebration, the Bonfire night originates from 1605 where a man named Guy Fawkes was found to have hidden explosives under the House of Lords. His intent was to assassinate the king. However, the king survived. Every year, this event is celebrated on the 5 th  of November all over England by a succession of fireworks and bonfires illuminating the sky.

Alton Towers has massive grounds, woodlands and natural lakes and the fireworks are truly spectacular. There are also extreme thrill rides such as the infamous ‘smiler’, and plenty of family friendly rides and entertainment.

The closet international airport is Birmingham, a 25 mile or so drive from there. 

Kerry says, “While you can choose to stay at a hotel in the park, its much cheaper to stay in Stratford upon Avon and enjoy this pretty historical town while you’re there.”

Bratislava, Slovakia

Bratislava is one of the best places to visit in Europe in November as you get to see the best of both worlds. You still have the last of the beautiful Autumn foliage and the Christmas festivities are starting to take place. You can visit the Xmas markets during the second half of the month before most of the tourists arrive in December. 

When visiting Bratislava, make your way into the old town first. Here, you’ll find a myriad of attractions clustered around the cobblestone streets. Scale the stairs in the Old Town Hall for some of the best views in town. Browse the tiny medieval museum housed within the tower at Michael’s Gate. Then, see how many quirky statues you can spot as you stroll around the streets.

Overlooking the old town, you’ll find Bratislava Castle. Take a walk up through the steep streets opposite the old city walls, and venture up to the castle grounds. Here you can admire the gardens and take in the view, or pay to visit the museum & treasury contained within it.

Opposite the castle, it’s impossible to miss the UFO Tower on the other side of the river. You can take a rickety elevator to the top for a small entrance fee, or make a reservation at the UFO restaurant for free access. The views from the top of the tower are sublime, especially at sunset. Make sure you look for the contrasting landscapes on both sides of the Danube.

The capital city of Slovakia has its own international airport which is located around 7km from the city centre. However, many visitors choose to  visit Bratislava  via Vienna airport, which is only 40km away. Vienna often has more flight options and is well connected via public transport. 

Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen is one of the most beautiful destinations to visit during the winter months. The Danish capital truly comes to life in the winter and November is one of the best times to visit. It is quieter and easier to explore, with shorter queues for attractions. In addition, accommodation is a lot cheaper. 

Don’t let the colder weather and reduced tourism fool you though, there are lots things to do in Copenhagen during this time.

Visit Freetown Christiana – A small suburb of Copenhagen set up in the early 70’s by hippies. The area is well known for its cannabis trade and its own laws. Around 850 people still live there today. The area is free to visit and one of the most interesting areas of Copenhagen. However, make sure you read up on the rules before visiting.

Get lost in Tivoli Gardens – Ever wondered where Walt Disney dreamt up Disney Land? Tucked away in the city centre you’ll find the second oldest theme park in the world! From early November you can visit the gardens during their ‘Christmas season’. There’s lots to do for people of all ages, including riding the rollercoasters, viewing the amazing light shows and meeting Santa. Get ready for the magic!

Beyond that, make sure you grab some food and drink in the Christmas markets, relax in the outdoor spaces and gardens.

When you visit, you have to fly into Copenhagen international Airport. The airport is only 7 km from the city centre with lots of fantastic transportation options. Taxi, bus and metro are the most popular, but you can also get a private transfer if you prefer. 

There are plenty of amazing places to visit in Europe in November. Whether you hope to feel warm temperatures and the sun, or the cool air of an autumn day, there is an amazing destination for you. It is also the best time to go for lower prices in hotels, and quiet moments away from tourist crowds.

Taking a trip to Europe is something of a rite of passage among travel lovers. But whether you’re planning a multi-country tour or just a short stay in one place, there’s a lot that you should – yet might not – know about visiting the world’s second smallest continent. European countries are not homogeneous

When travelers say they’re “going to Europe,” it can mean they’re making multiple stops across the continent, or just visiting one country. As with other continents, Europe is sometimes perceived as one great homogeneous blob – all gingerbread-house architecture, wartime relics, and gelato stands.

But, made up of more than 40 sovereign states speaking 24 official languages, this continent is endlessly surprising. Did you know that Spain is home to mainland Europe’s only true desert (pictured), or that Bosnia-Herzegovina boasts its largest rainforest?

Forget stereotypes

Cultural stereotypes are something every responsible traveler should leave at the door. They breed idle assumptions that when left unchecked can grow into harmful prejudices and unconscious bias. Common stereotypes like binge-drinking Brits, grumpy Eastern Europeans, and lazy Spaniards are not only massive generalizations, but they are also completely unfair.

So come without preconceptions and just talk to the people you meet along the way before forming an opinion. Travel is one of life’s most effective expanders of the mind, after all.

Not every country uses the euro

The euro (€) is the official currency of several states both in and outside the European Union (EU). Finland is the only country in Scandinavia to have adopted it, while countries such as Switzerland, Hungary, Poland, and Bosnia-Herzegovina have retained their original currency.

Great Britain and Northern Ireland use the pound, while the Republic of Ireland has the euro. Croatia became the most recent country to switch to the euro when it discontinued its use of the kuna in 2023.

Check when your passport expires

When the UK ‘Brexited’ the EU, the rules on travel between the two estranged areas changed. Now, Brits traveling from home to the EU must have a passport valid for at least three months past their departure date.

The same can be said for nationals of other foreign countries too: Australians and Canadians traveling to Europe should have at least three months of validity left on their passports from the date they intend to leave the continent, while US citizens are advised to have no fewer than six months of passport validity past their last day in Europe.

What is the Schengen Area?

The Schengen Area is a coalition of 27 European countries that allow borderless travel between them. Travelers from several countries, including the UK and the US, do not need a visa to visit any Schengen nations and can travel freely in as many countries as they like for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

While you wait for your Schengen Area travel allowance to refresh, you can also travel in the non-Schengen countries of Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Romania for 90 days within a 180-day window visa-free.

Hand luggage only? One size doesn’t fit all

Frustratingly there is no standard allowance across all airlines when it comes to the size and weight of cabin baggage, which regularly slaps unsuspecting travellers with unwanted extra charges. Your free hand luggage allowance will also vary from carrier to carrier. 

British Airways is the most generous – you can bring one 56x45x25cm bag and one 40x30x15cm bag into the cabin with you, whereas budget airlines like Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air are much more stingy. The EU is ultimately looking at eliminating carry-on baggage fees but until then, be sure to do your research.

Trains and buses are (mostly) the best ways to get around

You can avoid a lot of the hand luggage drama entirely by traveling through Europe, as opposed to over it. Overland adventures on the continent have never been easier to plan, with many countries (eg Germany and Spain) implementing affordable ticket schemes for those choosing to travel more sustainably.

Luxembourg’s public transport network has been completely free to use since 2020, while France banned domestic flights in 2023 where the same journey could be completed by train in less than two and a half hours. On the flip side, the UK’s public transport system is notoriously overpriced.

You sometimes need to validate your tickets

Italy has very strict rules about the need for regional train and local bus tickets to be validated before use – and there’s a hefty fine to pay if you don’t. While Trenitalia’s high-speed and intercity trains are ticketless, you’ll need to get physical regional tickets and rail passes date-stamped before departure by the ticket office or a machine like the one pictured here; e-tickets can be validated online.

Ticket validation is gradually being phased out in France, but is still required in some regions. So if you see a ticket-validating machine, use it.

Bring a universal plug adaptor

Don’t get caught out by thinking there’s just one standard kind of power socket for the whole continent. While most countries in mainland Europe have C and F-type sockets, G sockets are more common in the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands, Cyprus, Gibraltar, and Malta.

Venture north to Denmark and its territories and you could encounter E or K-type sockets. To avoid any inconveniences in your destination, pack a universal adaptor that allows you to hook up USB cables and switch plug types with the press of a button.

Save on your phone usage

If you’re lucky, your cell’s network provider might allow you to use your calls, texts, and data throughout Europe as part of your existing plan. If that’s not the case, consider investing in a data-roaming add-on that could save you money if you travel regularly – purchasing packages as you go can often work out more expensive for less allowance. Otherwise, prepaid SIM cards designed for travelers also cover multiple countries for days and even months at a time.

Carry a bit of cash

Yes, even in today’s mostly cashless society, sometimes cash is king. While it can feel cumbersome and unhygienic to cart around, it’s better to have a safety net of notes and loose change in your bag than running into trouble if the card machine isn’t working in the cafe you’re eating in or if, heaven forbid, you were to lose your bank card or cellphone.

Just remember to keep your money safe, secured, and concealed at all times.

Always pay in the local currency

If you’re withdrawing cash from a European ATM or paying for something on your card while on the continent, always pay in the local currency rather than your own. This will ensure you’re not being fleeced by bad conversion rates that could cost you up to 10% more than if you’d opted for the local legal tender when prompted. Banks like Revolut, Monzo, and Starling offer some of the best exchange rates on the market when using their payment cards or apps abroad.

Expect crowds even in the off-season

Even if you’re visiting a European destination between November and March – deemed the off-season – it’s likely that city streets and Insta-famous tourist attractions may still be busier than you might expect. The cooler temperatures, wetter weather and shorter days might be enough to dissuade some people from booking an off-season trip to places like Stockholm, Prague, Edinburgh or London, but you’ll be far from the only one braving it in the name of lower costs.

Avoid falling victim to visitor caps

Greece became the latest European country to impose visitor limits on one of its foremost attractions in 2023 when the Acropolis of Athens began capping the number of daily tourists at 20,000. To protect the longevity of the ancient UNESCO site and the comfort of everyone who wants to see it, visitors must book a one-hour entrance slot in advance.

Elsewhere, tourism caps have also been applied on hire cars touring Italy’s Amalfi Coast Drive at busy periods – if your number plate ends in an odd number, you can’t access the road on odd-numbered days, and vice versa.

Pack a comfy pair of walking shoes

It's amazing how quickly your pedometer will tick up while exploring Europe, without you even really having to think about it. Wandering cobbled medieval streets, coast paths, nature trails, and around sprawling museums, you'll surpass that 10,000 daily step count in no time. Be sure then to pack your favorite pair of sneakers or most sturdy hiking boots – shoes that aren't just supportive but breathable, to avoid unwanted travel buddies like blisters and ingrown toenails.

There are countries where your budget will go further

While the term ‘cheap’ is subjective, we think most will agree that paying less than a euro for an espresso is an absolute steal – and almost unheard of. But that's the going rate in Bulgaria, an oft-overlooked nation at the confluence of the Black Sea and the Balkan Peninsula's highest peaks.

Its neighbor Romania is also touted as one of Europe's more affordable destinations, as well as the likes of Estonia, Poland, and Czechia.

Sleeping under the stars isn’t a given

If you’re planning to save money on accommodation by wild camping your way around Europe, you should know that pitching your tent is subject to different rules in different countries and often involves a lot of red tape. In the UK for instance, wild camping is illegal without the landowner’s consent almost everywhere, apart from the majority of Scotland and Dartmoor National Park in England’s southwest. Sweden, Norway, and Finland have right-to-roam laws that allow camping freely in nature, provided you leave no trace.

These are the countries most supportive of the LGBTQ+ community

Though attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community have become more accepting in recent years across the continent, there are countries that are considerably more inclusive and celebratory than others. At the time of writing, ILGA-Europe (the European Region of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association) ranked Malta, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, and Iceland as the top five European countries where people of all sexualities and gender identities should feel safe.

At the bottom of the table, Armenia, Turkey, and Azerbaijan rank lowest for LGBTQ+ tolerance.

These are some of Europe’s most accessible cities

Persons with disabilities, elderly people, and families with children all might need to consider the accessibility of a city before visiting. And looking at those that have placed either first, second, or third in the Access City Award is a good starting point: Stockholm, Lyon, Berlin, Warsaw, Milan, Luxembourg (pictured), Ljubljana, Rotterdam, and Salzburg have all been recognized in the past.

If you require elevators or ramps to get around, you might want to skip London – only 92 Tube stations out of the 272 in the metro network provide step-free access from street to platform.

Table for one?

If there's one thing solo travelers universally dread, it's dining alone. In reality, no one bats an eye when you say “mesa para uno,” but what if you can’t even get a table in the first place? In August 2023, Lonely Planet reported that solo diners were being denied seats at restaurants with outdoor terraces in Barcelona, with larger groups taking priority.

But worry not, there are plenty of amazing restaurants that do welcome solo customers, such as BENZiNA in the lively Sant Antoni neighborhood. Wherever you travel solo in Europe, it's worth noting that some restaurants won't take reservations for one, so prepare to be flexible.

Businesses might shut down for certain days and siestas

Looking to eat out when you're traveling around Europe? You might find it easier to make a reservation on some days than others. While not all restaurants shut down on Sundays and Mondays as a rule, you might notice that many do. So leave yourself enough time in the planning process to account for a bit of extra research.

Shops will often close early (if not completely) on Sundays too, while in typically warmer countries like Spain, Italy, and Greece, businesses may also pause operations during afternoon siesta time, especially in more rural communities.

Know when you’re not wanted

Overtourism has become a major blight in some of Europe’s cities, whose fatal flaw is their aesthetic beauty and party-loving nightlife districts. But enough is enough, says Amsterdam, which will increase its tourist tax in 2024 in line with restrictions the city recently placed on cruise ships.

The hike will mean Amsterdam breaking its own record for the highest tourist tax in Europe – maybe even the world. Spanish destinations like Seville, Mallorca, and Barcelona are also clamping down on rowdy visitors eliciting antisocial behavior.

You can’t even eat ice cream on this Italian beach

Italy is one of the more vocal countries when it comes to making rules to deter irresponsible tourism and pollution. In the summer of 2023, it was reported that beachgoers at Sant’Antioco in Sardinia could be slapped with a €500 ($546) fine for eating food of any kind on the beach.

Milan has also recently been cracking down on eating, banning late-night/early-morning takeout, while consuming food on the streets of Florence's historic center is also prohibited between set times. In Rome, tourists could be fined for sitting on the iconic Spanish Steps or wading in the Trevi Fountain.

Don’t bring wheelie suitcases to this historic city

Elsewhere, ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’ Dubrovnik is urging travelers to respect the city, having launched a tourism campaign in 2023 encouraging people to carry their suitcases through the ancient old town instead of raking them across the battered cobbles. This comes after UNESCO has previously threatened to strip Dubrovnik of its World Heritage Site status due to its problems with mass tourism.

While the word about wheeling suitcases through the city’s historic center isn’t a concrete ban, visitors should still be mindful of the impact they make on any destination they travel to.

There’s more than meets the eye

While Europe’s most talked-about places are popular for a reason and shouldn’t necessarily be dropped from your itinerary, there is far more to this little continent than what you see on social media. For instance, Scotland isn’t all just moody castles and rugged highlands – it has Caribbean-like beaches, like the one pictured here on the Isle of Harris.

You’ll be vastly rewarded for venturing beyond Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast and Iceland’s Golden Circle, and considering the countries you don’t see documented as much, such as Kosovo, Albania, and Lithuania.

Visiting the UK is about to get more expensive

As part of ongoing plans to digitize its borders, the UK is introducing a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) document that will be required for visa-free international visitors to England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. ETAs cost £10 ($13) and are already mandatory for Qatari passport holders, with Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE joining the scheme from February 2024.

More countries, including the 27 European Union member states, the USA, Canada, and Australia, are set to join later in 2024. More on the ETA process can be found in our detailed explainer .

You’ll soon need extra authorisation to visit other countries too

Visa-exempt international travelers to 30 other European countries will also need to apply for additional travel authorization within a couple of years. The ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) scheme is similar to the UK’s ETA and will be required for nationals from these listed countries to visit all 27 countries in the Schengen Area, plus Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Romania.

The new visa waiver program is set to come into effect from spring 2025.

Dodge city centres if you’re planning a road trip

In a bid to reduce the continent’s carbon footprint, more and more low emissions zones are cropping up all over Europe and placing restrictions on petrol and diesel vehicles passing through major cities such as London, Paris, and Madrid. Not only does driving a car in these zones result in huge charges to compensate for the environmental impact of the journey, but it can also mean you’re stuck in traffic jams that eat into the enjoyment of your trip.

While hiring a car is required to visit more rural, remote, and coastal areas, you shouldn’t need one to get around cities.

It’s not just Amsterdam that loves a bike

While the Dutch capital might be the poster-child for seeing the world on two wheels, it's not the only European city encouraging people to get on their bikes. Copenhagen (pictured) is another incredibly cycle-friendly city, where great bike bridges, explorative routes, designated lanes, and hire schemes have all been created.

If you are planning to cycle when you come to Europe, make sure to familiarise yourself with the road laws for cyclists in each of your destinations, as these can vary from country to country.

Should you really be worried about bedbugs?

Social media ran riot in October 2023 with fear-mongering reports of bedbugs infesting the Paris metro, hotels, and cinemas, sending Parisians and travelers into a panic about getting bitten and taking the little blighters home with them. But despite the frenzy, health officers and dermatologists have said that the French capital’s bedbug problem is no worse than in other cities around the world. So while they’re a nuisance, they shouldn’t put you off traveling.

In November 2023, the European Commission adopted a proposal for a Directive to amend the Package Travel Directive. The objective of the revision is to make the protection of travellers more effective at all times, including in crisis situations, while improving the functioning of the internal market in the package travel sector.

The Package Travel Directive covers pre-arranged package holidays, but also customised packages, where the traveller chooses different types of travel services (transport, accommodation, car rental, etc.), online or offline. Packages provide broad protection for the traveller, and the organiser of the package is fully responsible for the performance of all included travel services and is obliged to obtain insolvency protection to cover travellers' payments and their repatriation. In addition, the Directive provides certain protection for linked travel arrangements, for example where a traveller books a flight on one website and is then invited to book a hotel or rent a car on a different website.

• considers a revision of the Package Travel Directive (PTD) both timely and necessary, and in general welcomes the revised Directive, which aims to codify voucher schemes and provide clear information and legal guarantees to travellers, while giving more flexibility to travel businesses;
