Types of Visits

All incarcerated people are eligible to receive visits unless they have temporarily lost that privilege due to disciplinary action. See below for information on in-person and family visiting. Please note that all visiting is dependent on the Department’s Roadmap to Reopening and health and safety factors.

In-Person Visits

Most incarcerated people in the general population may participate in an in-person visit. These visits allow the incarcerated person to sit together with their visitor(s) in a designated shared space, usually furnished with tables and chairs. In-person visits are limited to five visitors at a time and are not limited in duration except for normal visiting hours or terminations caused by overcrowding.

In-Person Non-Contact Visits

Incarcerated people who are still in reception (recently admitted to CDCR or transferred between prisons) or who are segregated (i.e., Administrative Segregation, Security Housing Units, Adjustment Centers, pending specific rules violation report charges, or assigned to Behavior Management Units) are restricted to non-contact visits. Non-contact visits occur with a glass partition between the incarcerated person and his/her visitors. The incarcerated person is escorted in handcuffs by staff to the visit. The handcuffs are removed only after the incarcerated person is secured in his/her side of the visiting booth; thus, parents who do not wish to have children see the incarcerated person in restraints should wait away from the booth or glass partition until the prisoner is settled. Non-contact visits are restricted to three visitors and are limited in time (usually one to two hours, depending on the prison and the reason for the non-contact status of visits).

Incarcerated people on Death Row, often referred to as “condemned”, are housed either at San Quentin State Prison in Marin County (men) or at Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla (women). “Condemned Grade A” incarcerated people on Death Row may receive contact visits (meaning no partition between incarcerated person and his/her visitor) unless their visiting privileges have been restricted for disciplinary or security reasons. “Condemned Grade B” incarcerated people on Death Row may only receive non-contact visits. All Condemned visits are in a secured booth and involve the incarcerated person being escorted to visiting in handcuffs. Visits for all incarcerated people on Death Row are limited in time (usually one to two hours).

Family Visits

Some incarcerated people are eligible for “family visits.” Family visits occur in private, apartment-like facilities on prison grounds and last approximately 30 to 40 hours. The following individuals are excluded from family visits: Incarcerated persons on Death Row, any incarcerated person with convictions for sex offenses, anyone in the Reception Centers process, or anyone under disciplinary restrictions. Family visits are restricted to immediate family members (parents, children, siblings, legal spouses, registered domestic partners, or who have a bona fide and verified foster relationship) of the incarcerated person. There are no age restrictions for prospective visitors.  Family visits are further restricted by availability. An eligible incarcerated person must put in an application for a family visit with their assigned correctional counselor at the prison. Further inquiries about family visiting should be directed by the incarcerated person to their counselor or by the family to the respective institution visiting staff.

Scheduling Family Visits

To schedule a family visit, an incarcerated person must request to schedule a Family Visit with the Family Visiting Coordinator.  The Family Visiting Coordinator at the institution will provide the necessary paperwork for the incarcerated person to complete, as well as a packet for them to send to their approved visitors to complete. Once all paperwork is complete and a visit is scheduled, the Family Visiting Coordinator will assist in arranging meals and other details. Depending upon the institution, family visits may be offered on the weekend, during the week, or both. Incarcerated persons and their families must pay for meals; all other accommodations are provided at no cost.

Waitlist for Family Visits

Each institution compiles a waitlist for family visit requests, prior waitlists are no longer in effect. Availability of visits, and turnaround time between approval and visit, varies with each institution.

In‑Person Marriage Ceremonies

Effective immediately, in-person marriage ceremonies may be scheduled and facilitated at adult institutions in the OPEN Phase of the  Roadmap to Reopening . Each institution has its own protocols for marriages; please contact your institution for details.

The process for requesting and completing a marriage packet has not changed. The incarcerated person must request the marriage packet from their counselor. Prior wedding waitlists will be honored. For more information,  contact the institution  in which your loved one is housed.

If an institution is not in OPEN Phase, adult applicants may continue to appear before a county clerk to obtain a marriage license via videoconference, rather than in person per  Governor’s Executive Order #N-58-20  . While CDCR is in compliance with this order, the authority to issue marriage licenses and to validate marriage ceremonies continues to rest entirely with the individual counties.

An in-person ceremony may be cancelled at any time due to health and safety reasons. When this status changes, a request may be submitted to the Marriage Coordinator to reschedule.

Family Visitor Visa

If you have family in the US, you may wish to visit them from time to time. Unless you are a US citizen, you will need to secure a US visa in order to do so. In order to enter the US to visit family, you will need to generally apply for a B-1 visa or B-2 visa , both of which are non-immigrant visas which allow you to enter the US temporarily for personal or business reasons. While in the US on a B-1/B-2 visitor visa, you will be able to visit family and friends, take part in tourist activities, and temporarily stay in the US. You will not be allowed to take part in work or study in the US on this visa.

In some cases, you may not need a B-1/B-2 visitor visa to visit family in the US. If you are the spouse or child of a US visa holder, including a J-1 or F-1 visa holder , for example, you may not need a B-1/B-2 visitor visa or you may need a different visa to enter the US. If you have a spouse or parents in the US on many visas, you may be able to secure a visa that allows you to live with your family in the US.

If you wish to visit your family for longer than just a few months, you may want to arrange for a family-sponsored US immigration visa. If some of your family members are US citizens and are willing to sponsor you, you may be able to apply for a US green card through your family’s sponsorship. Having a green card will allow you to travel more freely to the US and will allow you to live and work in the US permanently, so that you can be closer to your family.

‘The Visit’ Ending Explained: Family Reunions Can Be Torture

What's wrong with Grandma?

The Big Picture

  • In M. Night Shyamalan's The Visit , the main characters discover that the grandparents they are staying with are actually dangerous imposters.
  • The twist is revealed when the children's mother realizes that the people claiming to be their grandparents are strangers who have assumed their identities.
  • The climax of the film involves a tense and dangerous confrontation between the children and the imposters, resulting in the reveal of the true identities of the grandparents.

M. Night Shyamalan is considered a master at delivering drop-your-popcorn-level twisty conclusions to his haunting films. People still talk about the end of The Sixth Sense as perhaps one of the greatest twists in the history of modern cinema. The jaw-dropper at the end of Unbreakable ranks close to the top as well. But there is another pretty decent curveball that the director tosses up in a lesser-known movie that is currently streaming on Max. In 2016's The Visit (which is currently streaming on Max ) he plays on the hallowed relationship between children and their doting grandparents. How could Shyamalan toy with the innocence of this? It is an excellent film that deftly blends found footage with the director's signature slow-burning tension to leave audiences with yet another "WTF?" moment . Let's dig into what exactly happens at the end of his underrated movie, The Visit .

Two siblings become increasingly frightened by their grandparents' disturbing behavior while visiting them on vacation.

What is 'The Visit' About?

Young Becca Jamison ( Olivia DeJonge ) and little brother Tyler ( Ed Oxenbould ) are sent away by their divorced mother Loretta ( Kathryn Hahn ) to finally meet and spend some time with their grandparents , Frederick, or Pop Pop ( Peter McRobbie ), and Maria, better known as Nana ( Deanna Dunagan ). They have a nice rural estate away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and it feels like this is going to be a heartwarming story of two generations of the Jamisons getting to know each other. It seems a bit odd that these two preteens have yet to meet their maternal grandparents, but Shyamalan explains that nicely in the first few scenes: Loretta has had a years-long falling out with her parents after leaving the family farm at the age of 19.

M. Night Shyamalan’s Eerie Found Footage Horror Movie Deserves Another Look

Loretta is still estranged from her parents but she wants her children to have a relationship with them — she only wants to go on a cruise with her new boyfriend and needs someone to watch the kids. So, the children have no idea what their Nana and Pop Pop actually look like. And you can feel something amiss from the very beginning of the film as the two precocious but excited kids set off to meet their grandparents. The entire film is told through the kids' (mainly Becca, an aspiring filmmaker) camcorder, as they have decided to document their trip. It's clear right away that Becca resents her father as a result of his abandonment, as she refuses to include any footage of her dad in her film.

Shyamalan Expertly Builds Tension in 'The Visit'

Upon the kids' arrival, Nana and Pop Pop seem like regular grandparents with regular questions like, "Do you like sports?" and "Why are your pants so low?" Nana tends to the chores like cooking and cleaning while Pop Pop handles the more rugged work outdoors like cutting wood. Naturally, Shyamalan tightens the screws immediately when the audience discovers that there is little to no cell phone reception, so he can isolate our four players into a single space. The Grandparents seem fairly easygoing but they have one strict rule — the kids must not come out of their bedroom after 9:30 pm. The very first night, Nana exhibits some bizarre behavior, walking aimlessly through the downstairs portion of the house and vomiting on the floor. However, the next morning she seems to be just fine.

Pop Pop explains to Becca and Tyler that she suffers from "sundowning" which is a very real diagnosis that usually affects the elderly . He tells them that at night Nana gets this feeling that something is in her body and just wants to get out. Pop Pop is clear and coherent, and yet again, we, along with our two young lead characters, assume the grandparents, while odd, are nothing to fear. A Zoom call with Loretta further assuages their fear by explaining away all the strange behavior as part of getting older. It's a back-and-forth that Shyamalan expertly navigates by pushing the audience only so far before reeling it back in with a logical explanation. But soon, things become inexplicably dire and dangerous.

"What's in the shed?" Tyler asks as he looks into the camera while contributing to Becca's documentary . "Is it dead bodies?" What he discovers is a pile of used, discarded adult diapers filled with Pop Pop's excrement. The smell sends Tyler reeling, and he falls out of the shed onto the snowy ground. This time, it's Nana who explains away Pop Pop's odd behavior. She tells her grandson that Pop Pop has incontinence and is so proud that he hides his waste in the shed. At this point, everything seems very odd to say the least, but there is nothing to suggest anything sinister is afoot . Not yet anyway. Even after he attacks a random stranger who he believes is watching him out on the streets on a trip into town, you still just think that maybe Pop Pop may just have a loose screw. However, the sense that these elderly people are something more than doting parents is intensified when Nana leaves Becca inside the oven for several seconds.

What Is the Twist at the End of 'The Visit'?

"Those aren't your grandparents?" Get the heck out of here! What?! Loretta finally sees the two people claiming to be her parents and tells Becca and Tyler via Skype that they aren't their beloved Nana and Pop Pop, but two complete strangers who have assumed their identities. Loretta immediately calls the police, but it will take hours for help to arrive at the remote farmhouse. Becca and Tyler are going to have to play along with these dangerous imposters. After the most tense and awkward game of Yahtzee in the history of board games, things get really, really ugly. Nana and Pop Pop haven't laid a hand on either of the kids in the movie so far. You can feel the slow and excruciating tension that Shyamalan is building . He knows that the audience is waiting for that "point of no return" moment when it is crystal clear that Becca and Tyler's lives are in danger. Becca manages to escape to the basement to discover the dead bodies of two elderly people murdered. Nana and Pop Pop are escaped mental patients from the nearby psychiatric hospital and have killed the real Jamison grandparents.

What Happens at the End of 'The Visit'?

Pop Pop realizes their cover is blown and becomes physical with Becca. He's upset that Becca is ruining Nana's perfect week as a grandmother. He tells her, "We're all dying today, Becca!" pushing her into a pitch-black upstairs room. Meanwhile, he grabs Tyler and takes him into the kitchen, and does one of the most foul and stomach-turning things ever in a Shyamalan film . He takes his used diaper and shoves it in the boy's face. He knows that Tyler is a germaphobe, and it is the most diabolical and traumatizing thing he could do to the boy. Becca is trapped upstairs with the sundowning Nana, fighting for her own life. After a struggle, Becca grasps a shard of glass from the broken mirror and is able to stab Nana multiple times in the gut.

She breaks the lock on the door and runs downstairs to help Tyler. She pulls "Pop Pop" off her traumatized younger brother. Suddenly, Tyler snaps out of his stupor and releases the pent-up anger of his football tackling lessons with his estranged father. He knocks Pop Pop to the ground and slams the refrigerator door on his head over and over . This is significant because earlier in the movie, Becca ribs Tyler about how he froze up during a big play in a youth football game, and this time he comes through to save Becca in the final kitchen scene conquering his biggest fears.

Loretta and the police arrive and the kids run frantically out of the house. The final scene has Loretta setting the record straight for the documentary about the traumatic moments surrounding her running away from home. 15 years before the events of the film, before Becca was born, Loretta fell out with her parents over her decision to marry her teacher. The argument led to Loretta and her parents getting physical with each other, and she left home that night and never responded to their attempts and pleas to reconnect. It's the most emotional scene in the film as Loretta is feeling a huge amount of guilt at never getting to say she was sorry for the strained relationship between her and her parents or getting to possibly hear an apology for the wrongs they also committed. Loretta tells Becca "Don't hold on to anger! You hear me?" The two then share a meaningful embrace. And the final shot is of the two kids with their dad on a birthday when they were much younger.

The Visit is available to stream on Max in the U.S.

Traditionally, applying for a family visit visa was to visit any Ministry of Interior (MoI) Service Centre and submit copies of the documents along with the printed application form.

In 2018, Qatar introduced an online system where residents can apply for family visit visas through the Metrash2 mobile.

Through this service, you can upload all the required documents in the specified fields. You can also track the application status and pay the fees electronically once approved.

Step 12. Buy health insurance

From April 2023, health insurance needs to be taken after the visit visa is approved (not during application).

Once your visa is approved, you will receive a message to buy the insurance. While buying the insurance, enter the visa number and it will be updated in the Metrash system. The visa can be printed only after insurance has been purchased.

After this, you can download the visa copy and send it to the visitor for travel.

You can see the status on your Metrash app itself.

Check Family Visit Visa Status on Metrash

You can also check the family visit visa status on the Ministry of Interior website under Inquiries >> Visa Services >> Visa Approval Tracking ( link ).

Qatar Visa Check Online

Enter the application number and application date or sponsor’s QID number. Make sure all the required details are filled in correctly, and you’ll be able to check your visa status.

The Ministry of Interior (MOI) no longer entertains offline applications for family visit visas. You are required to apply via the Metrash mobile app.

There may be several reasons why your family visit visa application is rejected. Often it is due to submitting wrong or insufficient documents.

If the document photo is not clear or not attested (in the case of a marriage certificate), you can do the attestation and resubmit again. However, it is imperative to understand the reason and fix it before applying again.

Applications can also be rejected if the applicant (a Qatar resident) does not comply with the required conditions (salary or profession). If the application is rejected due to the applicant not meeting the salary requirement, it would be difficult to get approved again.

However, in case of rejection due to profession, you can try to meet the Captain at the Immigration Office in Duhail , and request for reconsideration. Sometimes he would approve if the profession is acceptable.

If your application is still under review or process, you can cancel it by clicking on the right arrow on the status page. If this option is not available, you will have to visit any MOI Service Center.

  • Passport (minimum validity of 6 months)

As the initial visa is issued for one month only, the sponsor has to extend it within the first month to avoid any penalties.

Relatives wishing to stay beyond one month must undergo a medical test within a few days. Here is the detailed process of the medical test for a visit visa extension .

Once the medical examination is passed, the visit visa can be extended online using the Metrash mobile app (Visa –> Visa Services –> Extend Visa) or by visiting any MOI service centre.

Family Visit

If the return ticket is after 30 days, some airlines may not allow visitors to board the flight since the initial visa is only for 30 days. So make sure to book a flight ticket that can be modified with a minimum change fee. In this way, once the visitor reaches Qatar, the ticket dates can be modified.

As this is an online visa, some airlines may require an “OK to Board” status in their system before departure. You can get this status by showing the visa copy to the airline’s Doha office.

“Null” Status on Visit Visa Application Receipt

Some of our readers have raised concerns that the receipt they received after application submission shows “null” in most fields.

Please note that this is normal for all applicants. This document is only an acknowledgement that they received your application. Your application details will be in the system.

Visit Visa Application “Under Process” and “Under Review” Status

Applicants often get confused about changes to their visit visa application status. It is normal that each visit visa application moves through “Under Process” and “Under Review” statuses multiple times before approval.

If your application status changes between these two, you do not have to do anything. In most cases, the application will be approved within days of a status change.

Qatar Family Visit Visa Approval Time

As of 2024, the average approval time for a Family Visit Visa is 1-4 weeks. Please note that applications are processed in batches and may not be on a first-come first-serve basis.

12 Family-Friendly Vacation Spots In The South

family visit the

There's no easing into summer in the South . By the time the final school bell rings, it's already blazing hot outside and the kids are itching for adventure. Don't let the opportunity for togetherness slip away: Pack up your crew, and make some memories with a trip to one of the many family-friendly spots across the South. Although the beach is the obvious hot-weather destination (and we have one of those on this list!), there are plenty of other places that will spark your kiddos' imaginations, whether they want to learn, relax, or explore—or all three.

To compile this list of quintessential Southern experiences, we surveyed our staff's travel experts; drove from Texas to Florida to Maryland; and gleaned tips from teens, moms, and dads. You'll enjoy taking your little music lovers to Memphis and New Orleans or seeing your budding history buffs hit their stride in Williamsburg, Virginia , or Montgomery, Alabama. Or even tackling Disney World. Wherever you land for your family vacation , we guarantee the time together—yes, even the long car ride—will be worth the planning.

Do Disney the Right Way

Orlando, Florida

Even if you're not inclined toward crowds, don't dismiss Walt Disney World Resort outright. With four parks to explore, there's no shortage of options for family fun, which, of course, can be both wonderful and overwhelming. Some tips to make the most of your trip: First, wait until your children are at least six years old to visit, and before you go, use the Disney Genie (part of the My Disney Adventure app) to plan your attack on the parks. Make sure to book character meals in advance; you can do so up to two months before your first day.

1375 E. Buena Vista Drive, Orlando, FL 32830, disneyworld.disney.go.com

Soak in Sun Studio

Memphis, Tennessee

Sidle up to the microphone where U2's Bono recorded vocals on Rattle and Hum . At least that's how you sell Sun Studio to your kids. The truth? You're aching to introduce them to the roots of Southern music. C'mon, this is where the King got his start! While in town, swing by Graceland and check out Elvis and Priscilla's over-the-top wardrobes. Less than a mile away from Sun Studio is the legendary Peabody Hotel , where you can enjoy a historic stay and watch the resident ducks waddle through the lobby twice a day.

706 Union Avenue, Memphis, TN 38103, sunstudio.com

Visit an Authentic Crab Shack

Annapolis, Maryland

Fresh blue crabs are an iconic Southern food, right up there with barbecue and sweet tea. For the freshest, head to Maryland. We like Cantler's Riverside Inn in Annapolis, which has been around for more than 40 years and offers fresh catch all year. If you don't mind a two-hour diversion, make your way to Crisfield, Maryland, where you can race crabs during the National Hard Crab Derby over Labor Day weekend.

458 Forest Beach Road, Annapolis, MD 21409, cantlers.com

Ride an Old-Timey Streetcar

New Orleans, Louisiana

If a minivan is your normal mode of transportation, the New Orleans streetcar will leave your little ones enthralled. (Stops are scattered throughout downtown.) Take one of the old-fashioned cars to the zoo and aquarium, or just hitch a ride to enjoy the views from one of the four routes (including a trip through the French Quarter). You'll love the chance to see the historic homes, and your kids will love the Komodo dragons at the zoo and the white alligator at the aquarium. Fun fact: These cars are the inspiration behind A Streetcar Named Desire.

Take a Colorful River Cruise

San Antonio, Texas

Sure, you know about the River Walk in San Antonio. But walking isn't necessarily the best way to appreciate the city. Take in the Spanish-inspired architecture by water with a boat tour. Your kids will thrill at the brightly colored boats (which look straight out of Encanto); you'll enjoy one of the 35-minute narrated tours, led by a San Antonio local.

Ticket booths: 706, 731, or 809 River Walk, San Antonio, TX 78205, goriocruises.com

Ride a Horse on the Beach

Jekyll Island, Georgia

Kids love horses. They also love the beach. So why not combine both? On a trip to Georgia's Jekyll Island, arrange a horseback outing with Golden Isles Carriage and Trails at Three Oaks Farm. When the Spanish moss-draped forests open up to reveal the beach and the vast Atlantic blue against the horizon, you'll hear only one word from your kid: "Wow!" Only in the South can you ride horses on a pristine beach that's been home to English settlers, French landowners, and turn-of-the-century American elite.

2 Clam Creek Road, Jekyll Island, GA 31527, threeoaksfarm.org

See Rock City

Lookout Mountain, Georgia

If you've been anywhere in the Southeast, you've seen the words painted on barns and birdhouses: See Rock City. Heed the advice. This kitschy attraction atop Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, Tennessee , exemplifies our region's quirky sense of humor. (Where else would anybody think to name a narrow cave Fat Man's Squeeze and charge admission?) But it also showcases its breathtaking beauty. Your kids can see seven states, stand under a waterfall, and take a walk through a cavern full of glowing gnome statues. There's nothing high-def or virtual reality about it. Rock City is just pure, simple fun.

1400 Patten Road, Lookout Mountain, GA 30750, seerockcity.com

Watch the Blue Angels Soar

Pensacola, Florida

The U.S. Navy's flight demonstration squadron, better known as the Blue Angels, performs unforgettable practice air shows in Pensacola on most Tuesdays and Wednesdays from June through November. Seeing these jets twist, turn, and roll with the synchronicity of a dance troupe is mind-boggling at any age. Following the Wednesday practices, request pilots' autographs at the National Naval Aviation Museum , which shares a home with the Angels. To attend the 55-minute practices, someone in your party must have a Department of Defense I.D. card.

1750 Radford Boulevard, Pensacola, FL 32508, blueangels.navy.mil

Conduct a Museum Scavenger Hunt

Washington, D.C.

Our nation's capital also happens to be a cultural mecca. Turn sightseeing into a scavenger hunt with three prime stops: First, head to Washington National Cathedral , and instruct your kids to find the carved Darth Vader grotesque, added in the 1980s. (Hint: It's in the building's northwest corner.) Then tell them to touch a piece of the moon at the National Air and Space Museum . The last item: the Ruby Slippers worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz , now at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History . The first one to find all three wins a souvenir from mom and dad from our favorite kids' museum in the city: the International Spy Museum .

Cathedral starting point: 3101 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20016

Travel to the Colonial Era

Williamsburg, Virginia

At Colonial Williamsburg, your kids can see every key player in 18th-century Southern society, and they can get in on the act, too. Here, educational experiences are masked as interactive entertainment as your kiddos try their hand at historic trades, from bookbinding and bricklaying to carpentry and engraving. Conclude your visit with a carriage ride through the historic downtown.

101 Visitor Center Drive, Williamsburg, VA 23185, colonialwilliamsburg.org

Learn About Civil Rights

Montgomery, Alabama

As the seat of the Civil Rights movement, Montgomery will always be remembered for the work of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr. Pass that history onto the next generation with a visit to the Southern Poverty Law Center's Civil Rights Memorial, designed by Maya Lin. Inside the museum, take a journey through the Civil Rights Movement and show your kids what it took to bring about lasting change in our country.

400 Washington Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36104, splcenter.org

Take to Space

Huntsville, Alabama

Let your kids' imaginations run wild at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville (which we have named the South's best museum ). They can explore the outer bounds of the universe via interactive exhibits that put them in the shoes of astronauts. And they'll love the rush of simulators like the Multi-Axis Trainer, which mimics the feeling of swirling through space, as well as the G-Force Accelerator and Moon Shoot, which recreate the feeling of a rocket launch. Don't forget to introduce them to freeze-dried ice cream.

One Tranquility Base, Huntsville, AL 35805, rocketcenter.com

The Age-Appropriate Travel Guide

At what age should you take your kids to New Orleans? Or Disney World? Here are our recommendations.

Ages 3-5: New Orleans streetcar, Blue Angels, River Walk Ages 6-8: Walt Disney World Resort, Rock City, Colonial Williamsburg Ages 9-12: Horseback riding, Sun Studio, D.C.'s museums, U.S. Space & Rocket Center Ages 13-15: Blue crabs, Civil Rights Memorial Center

Family of U.S. Citizens

This page describes how you (a U.S. citizen) may petition for certain family members to receive either a Green Card, a fiancé(e) visa or a K-3/K-4 visa based on your relationship. (If your relative wishes to naturalize or obtain proof of citizenship, see the Citizenship section of our website.)

To petition for a family member to receive a Green Card (permanent residence), begin by filing Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative . This form establishes the family relationship that exists between you and your relative. Sometimes the I-130 can be filed together with an application for permanent residence, officially known as Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status . This is discussed below.

  • If your relative is already in the United States, they may apply to adjust status to become a Green Card holder (lawful permanent resident) after a visa number becomes available using Form I-485.
  • If your relative is outside the United States, your petition will be sent to the National Visa Center (NVC). The NVC will forward your petition to the appropriate U.S. consulate when a visa becomes available and your relative will be notified about how to proceed. This process is referred to as “consular processing.”
  • Your family member’s preference category will determine how long they will have to wait for an immigrant visa number. Once you have filed a petition, you can check its progress the My Case Status page. For visa availability information, see the Visa Bulletin page on the U.S. Department of State website.

For more information on becoming a Green Card holder, see the Adjustment of Status for processing within the United States and Consular Processing page for processing overseas. For more information on Green Cards, see the Green Card section.

NOTE : A visa petition (Form I-130 or Form I-129F) is only used to demonstrate a qualifying relationship. An approved petition DOES NOT grant any benefit, it simply creates a place in line for visa processing.

If you or a member of your family is in the U.S. military, special conditions may apply. See the Military section of the website.

  • Family in the UK

Family visas: apply, extend or switch

You need a family visa to live with a family member in the UK for more than 6 months.

Applying from outside the UK

You can apply for a family visa to live with your:

  • spouse or partner
  • fiancé, fiancée or proposed civil partner
  • relative who’ll provide long-term care for you

If you’re visiting the UK for 6 months or less, check if you need a Standard Visitor visa or Marriage Visitor visa .

Extending your family visa

You can apply to extend your stay with your family member if you’re already in the UK on a family visa.

You can extend at any time before your current permission to stay in the UK expires.

If you’re extending to stay with the same family member, you’ll only get up to 28 days left on your current stay added to your new visa.

You must live in the UK for a certain amount of time before you’re eligible for settlement (‘indefinite leave to remain’). Before you extend your visa, check how much time you need to settle in the UK .

You might be able to apply to stay on the basis of your private life if you’ve lived in the UK for many years already.

Switching to a family visa

If you came to the UK on a different visa, you might be able to switch to a family visa to stay with your:

You can switch at any time before your current permission to stay in the UK expires.

How much it costs depends on who you’re joining and how you apply.

Cost for adults who need to be looked after by a relative

How much it costs depends on what permission your relative has.

If they have temporary ‘protection status’ (permission to stay as a refugee or with humanitarian protection) it costs:

  • £404 if you’re applying from outside the UK

£1,048 if you’re applying from inside the UK

Otherwise, it costs:

£3,250 if you’re applying from outside the UK

Let your bank know that a large amount of money will be coming out of your account - otherwise it might cancel your payment.

If you cannot pay the fee, you may be eligible for a fee waiver in certain situations - for example if you cannot afford a place to live or your essential living costs.

Healthcare surcharge

You might also need to pay the healthcare surcharge as part of your application.

For each adult (18 or older) it costs:

  • £2,587.50 if you’re staying for 2 years and 6 months
  • £3,105 if you’re staying for 2 years and 9 months
  • £5,175 if you’re staying for 5 years

For each child (under 18), it costs:

  • £1,940 if you’re staying for 2 years and 6 months
  • £2,328 if you’re staying for 2 years and 9 months
  • £3,880 if you’re staying for 5 years

Get a faster decision on your application

If you’re applying from the UK, you may be able to pay an extra £1,000 for the super priority service to get a faster decision.

You cannot use the super priority service if you’re applying as an adult coming to be cared for by a relative.

Once you’ve got your decision letter, your biometric residence permit will take up to 10 working days to arrive.

Other ways you can stay

You were the victim of domestic abuse or your partner died.

You might be able to apply to settle in the UK if you had permission to stay in the UK as a partner when either:

  • you were the victim of domestic abuse
  • your partner died

Your family member has protection status (leave to remain as a refugee, permission to stay as a refugee or humanitarian protection)

You might be able to apply for ‘family reunion’ to join a partner or parent who has either:

  • leave to remain as a refugee or permission to stay as a refugee in the UK
  • humanitarian protection in the UK

When you cannot get a family visa

In some circumstances you cannot apply for, or switch to, a family visa.

Your family member has a work visa or student visa

You cannot apply for a family visa if your family member is in the UK temporarily on a work visa or student visa .

You can apply to stay with them as a dependant instead.

You have a visitor visa or a visa for 6 months or less

You’ll usually need to leave the UK to apply for a family visa if either:

  • you have permission to be in the UK as a visitor
  • your visa is for 6 months or less

However, you might be able to switch to a family visa in the UK if you have either:

  • a 6-month family visa as a fiancé, fiancée or proposed civil partner
  • permission to stay in the UK for the outcome of a family court case or divorce

Recently, many family visit visa applications have been rejected with the message “ نأمل تعبئة طلب جديد مع تدوين المهنة بشكل دقيق في خانة ( المهنة)، أطيب تحياتنا .” which means that the profession selected is inaccurate.

However, there is no profession of housewife, child, or retired in the list of professions provided above. We believe that this is a short glitch and soon the Saudi government will start to accept “Unemployed” profession.

Parent, Family, and Community Engagement (PFCE) Framework

The Head Start Parent, Family, and Community Engagement (PFCE) Framework is a road map for progress. It can be used in program-wide strategic planning, program design and management, continuous learning and improvement activities, as well as with governing bodies and parent groups. The Framework is also useful as a professional development tool. It can help all staff members understand their role in systemic, integrated, and comprehensive PFCE , and to coordinate their efforts with others.

Consider using the PFCE Framework to enhance and coordinate program services. Use it to inform community partners about Head Start and Early Head Start parent and family engagement goals and the importance of those goals to children's school readiness and success in school and life. The Head Start PFCE Framework is intended to inspire a renewed spirit of collaboration as programs identify and take next steps to engage families and communities to achieve better outcomes for children and families.

Use the interactive PFCE Framework to find research, resources, and regulations related to program foundations, program impact areas, family engagement outcomes, and child outcomes. Select any area of the Framework below to get started.

Download the PFCE Framework  and  PFCE Overview for Parents .

Defining Family and Community Engagement

Family engagement is an interactive process through which program staff and families, family members, and their children build positive and goal-oriented relationships. It is a shared responsibility of families and professionals that requires mutual respect for the roles and strengths each has to offer. Family engagement means doing with—not doing to or for—families. At the program level, family engagement involves parents’ engagement with their children and with staff as they work together toward the goals that families choose for themselves and their children. It also involves families and staff working toward goals to improve the program. Head Start and Early Head Start staff work together with families, other professionals, and community partners in ways that promote equity, inclusiveness, and cultural and linguistic responsiveness.

Children are at the heart of meaningful family engagement. They are the inspiration for positive, goal-oriented, parent-provider relationships.

Parents enter relationships with staff on their children’s behalf, and they deepen these relationships with their children in mind. They know their children better than anyone—their temperaments, personalities, strengths, vulnerabilities, talents, and special needs. They know their own cultures and what they want to transmit to their children. When parents share their knowledge, they improve provider practices and program quality.

Head Start and Early Head Start staff create authentic partnerships with parents when they convey their eagerness to welcome parents’ expertise and their readiness to share the care. Parents can believe in the partnership when they feel the passion providers share with them—for the quality of the child’s everyday experiences, for supporting the parent-child relationship, and for laying the foundations early for a thriving future.

Head Start and Early Head Start staff and community agencies build partnerships that honor and are responsive to the languages and cultures of the families they serve.

Community engagement refers to the mutually respectful, strengths-based interactions of Head Start and Early Head Start staff and families with community members and agencies at all levels. These partnerships support parents’ roles as valued community members and their progress toward their goals for themselves and their children.

Community partners provide tangible child development supports and resources that families and staff want and need. They can work with families and Head Start and Early Head Start staff toward such goals. These include parents’ educational advancement, economic mobility, and other aspects of family well-being.

Head Start and Early Head Start staff actively seek out and respond to community voices, strengths, and needs. They collaborate with families, community members, and other local agencies to identify common goals, align resources, and share data for continuous improvement and effective partnerships.

10-year-old boy woke to find family slain in Oklahoma murder-suicide that left 5 dead

A 10-year-old boy woke up Monday in his home and found his family massacred , four of whom were fatally shot by the child’s father who then killed himself, Oklahoma City police said Tuesday.

Jonathon Candy argued with his wife, Lindsay Candy, and fatally shot her and then gunned down three of his sons, between the ages of 12 and 18, before he fatally shot himself at his Mirage Street home, Oklahoma City Police Sgt. Gary Knight said during a media briefing.

The 10-year-old boy called police about 9:30 a.m. Monday and told them about the grisly discoveries.

“Police received a 911 call from a 10-year-old inside the residence indicating … everyone inside the home appeared to be dead,” Knight said. “Make no mistake about it. What happened inside that residence was nothing short of a massacre. Those children were hunted down and killed.”

Knight said investigators didn’t know why the boy’s life was spared. The child “woke up and discovered what happened,” Knight said.

The shooting victims were identified as Dylan Candy, 18; Ethan Candy, 14, Lucas Candy, 12, police said . Lindsay Candy was 39 years old and Jonathon Candy was 42, police said.

The family had no prior calls to service from the police and no history of domestic abuse allegations, Knight said.

Investigators have not determined what prompted the violence, police said.

Title: openelm: an efficient language model family with open-source training and inference framework.

Abstract: The reproducibility and transparency of large language models are crucial for advancing open research, ensuring the trustworthiness of results, and enabling investigations into data and model biases, as well as potential risks. To this end, we release OpenELM, a state-of-the-art open language model. OpenELM uses a layer-wise scaling strategy to efficiently allocate parameters within each layer of the transformer model, leading to enhanced accuracy. For example, with a parameter budget of approximately one billion parameters, OpenELM exhibits a 2.36% improvement in accuracy compared to OLMo while requiring $2\times$ fewer pre-training tokens. Diverging from prior practices that only provide model weights and inference code, and pre-train on private datasets, our release includes the complete framework for training and evaluation of the language model on publicly available datasets, including training logs, multiple checkpoints, and pre-training configurations. We also release code to convert models to MLX library for inference and fine-tuning on Apple devices. This comprehensive release aims to empower and strengthen the open research community, paving the way for future open research endeavors. Our source code along with pre-trained model weights and training recipes is available at \url{ this https URL }. Additionally, \model models can be found on HuggingFace at: \url{ this https URL }.
