Here's the FedEx Cup prize money payout for each golfer at the 2022 Tour Championship

For all the debate this summer about rapidly rising prize money payouts in professional golf, it was crazy to think what was on the line this week at the Tour Championship. The winner on Sunday at East Lake Golf Club was going to earn $18 million for his victory.

Let’s repeat this: $18 million.

By comparison, for their entire PGA Tour careers, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, winners of 25 majors and 135 tour titles, earned a combined $7,595,888.

And that winner, fittingly, was Rory McIlroy, the man who has served as the de facto face of the PGA Tour in 2022. As LIV Golf has risen to prominence and created a schism in men’s pro golf this summer, McIlroy has been the calming presence the PGA Tour needed, rallying some of the biggest names to try to keep the tour together.

McIlroy began the tournament six shots back of Scottie Scheffler, was 10 shots back after two holes (when he opened with a triple bogey, bogey), nine back after 36 holes and a six back to start the final round. But with rounds of 67-67-63-66 to get to 21 under, he rallied for a third career FedEx Cup title to the ones won in 2014 and 2019.

Technically speaking, the money on the line in Atlanta is not tournament prize money, but rather the payout for the $75 million FedEx Cup bonus pool that players are receiving for their finishes in the season-long points race. No player’s career earnings will increase as a result of their performance in the 2021-22 season finale.

Here then is the prize money payout for each golfer in the final FedEx Cup standings after the conclusion of the Tour Championship. As with regular PGA Tour events, money is split equally among players if there are ties for different places in this last event of the 2021-’22 PGA Tour season. We’ll update this list shortly after Sunday’s finish to include individual names with their earnings.

One additional note: Every player in the FedEx Cup top 150 earns some distribution from the bonus pool. It’s why the list below has far more names than just the 30 competing in the Tour Championship.

Here's how much money the 2022 Tour Championship winner will make

Scottie Scheffler is 72 holes away from a massive payday.

After finishing tied for third in the BMW Championship , Scheffler claimed the No. 1 spot in the FedEx Cup playoff standings with 4,206 points.

The 26-year-old American will now enter this week’s Tour Championship with the top staggered starting position at 10-under. That’s two strokes ahead of defending FedEx Cup champion Patrick Cantlay, who won the BMW Championship . Meanwhile, Will Zalatoris won the St. Jude Championship but then withdrew from the BMW Championship with a back injury that will also force him to miss the Tour Championship.

Scheffler took home $2.7 million in prize money when he won the 2022 Masters in April for his first career major victory. And he could earn more than six times that amount if he emerges as the winner among the 30 golfers competing at Atlanta’s East Lake Golf Club.

How much money will the 2022 Tour Championship winner make?

The 2022 Tour Championship winner will be awarded $18 million in prize money, a $3 million increase from last year’s event. There's a dropoff of over $10 million from first to second place, with the runner-up set to receive $6.5 million.

FedEx Cup Winner 2022: Rory McIlroy's Prize Money and Final Golf Standings

Rory McIlroy earned the $18 million FedEx Cup bonus after his victory at the 2022 TOUR Championship on Sunday.

There was $75 million up for grabs at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, featuring the top 30 golfers in the FedEx Cup standings entering the final week of the season (minus Will Zalatoris who withdrew because of an injury). There were no cuts, meaning last place (Scott Stallings) even took home $500,000 from the weekend.

All eyes were still on the first-place battle with a record $18 million on the line, up from last year's top payout of $15 million. Scottie Scheffler, McIlroy and Sungjae Im were the top contenders down the stretch, but it was McIlroy who took home the championship with a score of 21 strokes under par.

It's the third FedEx Cup title for the Northern Irish star, who also won in 2016 and 2019.

Scheffler and Im each earned $5.75 million after tying for second place.

Scheffler was seemingly coasting to his first TOUR Championship with a six-stroke lead after Round 3.

The 26-year-old built a solid lead in the FedEx Cup thanks to four wins during the season, including the Masters, which was enough to go into the weekend 10 strokes under par in the modified scoring system. He eventually got himself to 23 under heading into the final round Sunday, with McIlroy and Xander Schauffele sitting at 17 strokes under par.

Even with the advantage, the battle for first quickly became an exciting one with Scheffler bogeying three of his first six holes.

McIlroy and Im both took advantage with multiple birdies to climb into contention:

The three golfers were separated by just one stroke for much of the round, putting pressure on every single stroke with so much money on the line.

Im double-bogeyed on 14, which likely was enough to cost him a chance at a title despite seven birdies on the day.

When Scheffler bogeyed again on No. 16, McIlroy pulled into the solo lead for the first time with a quality par save:

Scheffler couldn't answer, allowing McIlroy to close out the tournament with a par on 18.

Justin Ray @ JustinRayGolf Rory McIlroy's 6-shot final round comeback to win is the largest in Tour Championship history.

McIlroy has 12 PGA Tour wins when trailing entering the final round, 4 more than any other player since 2010.

The 33-year-old notably fell short at the Open Championship and didn't win any majors this year despite finishing in the top 10 at all four. However, he takes home the biggest single payout of the year to cap an impressive season for the star golfer.

FedEx Cup Playoffs Prize Money Payout 2022

fedex tour championship 2022 payout

The race is on for the biggest slice of the PGA Tour’s $75 million pie! Let’s talk FedEx Cup prize money as this year’s edition tees off on Aug. 11.

The PGA Tour thought it knew what a big bag was. If the majors aren’t rich enough for you, the Players Championship paid out $3.6 million to winner Cameron Smith in March — much more than the $2.5 million he pocketed for winning The Open Championship this summer, a win that also helped him to a No. 2 position on the FedEx Cup leaderboard.

Then, LIV Golf showed up and messed with the whole program, throwing around nine-figure guarantees to attract some of golf’s biggest stars. At each LIV Golf event, the individual winner gets $4 million, but can earn as much as $4.75 million if said winner is also a member of the best-performing four-man team. Even the fourth-place golfer earns over a million buckeroos.

But what LIV Golf doesn’t have (at least for now) is a three-leg end-of-season competition featuring a $75 million bag. Indeed, the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoffs are here! Let’s talk prize money payouts for the trio of events beginning Aug. 11 at TPC Southwind in Memphis and concluding with the Tour Championship Aug. 25-28.

Get on our list for weekly sports business, industry trends, interviews, and more.

Here’s the insane amount of money up for grabs at the Tour Championship

The PGA Tour is set to hand out an insane amount of money at the Tour Championship, with the winner taking home $18 million.

All 30 players at this week’s Tour Championship should be thrilled with how their seasons played out. Not only did they survive until the last event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, signifying a rock-solid year on the course, but they’re also in line for a huge payout by week’s end.

Rory McIlroy addressed the media ahead of the Tour Championship.

The PGA Tour just made big-time structural changes. Here are the 10 biggest

The total bonus pool for the 2022 FedEx Cup Playoffs is $75 million, and a whopping $18 million of that will go to the winner of this week’s Tour Championship. But even for those who don’t take home the Tour’s season-long crown, things in Atlanta will still be pretty sweet.

Second place is in line for $6.5 million while third takes home a cool $5 million. In fact, every player in the top 10 will receive a seven-figure check. And even if you go down to the bottom of the leaderboard, there’s not likely to be many frowning faces as last place in the field still earns $500,000. Not too shabby for a week on the golf course.

Check out the FedEx Cup bonus breakdown for each finisher at East Lake below.

2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship final results: Prize money payout, leaderboard and how much each golfer won

fedex tour championship 2022 payout

The 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship final leaderboard is headed by winner Will Zalatoris , who earned his first PGA Tour win at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tenn.

Zalatoris and Sepp Straka wound up in a playoff at 15-under 265. In an absolutely wild playoff, both players made pars on the first two playoff holes on No. 18.

Then on the par-3 11th hole, Zalatoris' tee shot found a rock wall around the green, while Straka was found the water. Zalatoris went to the drop zone to hit his third shot instead of from the rock wall, getting up-and-down for a winning bogey.

Lucas Glover and Brian Harman finished tied for third, three shots out of the playoff.

Zalatoris won the $2,700,000 winner's share of the $15,000,000 purse.

FedEx Cup earnings: How much each golfer in the 2022 Tour Championship field has made in his career

An $18 million grand prize goes to the winner of the tour championship.

fedex tour championship 2022 payout

This year in golf has revolved around one singular item -- money. That will not change this week at the Tour Championship as the final event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs is set to reward all of those who have qualified for play at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. With only 29 men in the field after Will Zalatoris' withdrawal , the minimum a competitor will receive for his efforts this week is a cool $510,000 as Zalatoris will be awarded the last-place prize of $500,000.

Patrick Cantlay and Zalatoris each collected $2.7 million for their victories in the first two postseason events. An elevated purse compared to the regular season, the winner's share from Memphis and Wilmington is still nothing compared to that of Atlanta as it would not even clear the top-five paydays for the Tour Championship. Between prize money and FedEx Cup bonuses, a total purse of $75 million will be at stake at the postseason finale.

While $15 million was the purse the last two weeks, $18 million will be the grand prize for the winner of the Tour Championship. To contextualize just how much money this is, this sum surpasses the combined on-course earnings of Cameron Smith and Xander Schauffele in 2022 who boast six victories between them including the Players Championship and The Open.

A cool $18 million grand prize is up for grabs this week…below are sums of on-course earnings from the season that roughly add up to that same number • Scheffler + Horschel • Smith + Schauffele • Cantlay + McIlroy • Thomas + Finau + Homa • Rahm + Niemann + Spieth + Poston — Patrick McDonald (@AmateurStatus) August 22, 2022

Providing even further context, below we will dissect just how much $18 million would mean to each participant in the Tour Championship as it is surely not the same to Rory McIlroy as it is to Sahith Theegala for example. Looking at their career on-course earnings -- excluding past FedEx Cup winnings as they are classified as bonuses -- the prize money becomes even more obscene.

How big winning the Tour Championship would be

Would you look at that -- it was an even split before Zalatoris had to withdraw due to his back injury. Now only 14 players will more than double their on-course earnings with a triumph at the Tour Championship with Theegala multiplying his total by more than 5 times if he is able to pull off the improbable. While the Pepperdine product still has a long way to go in his career, a veteran such as Stallings is an interesting case to look at.

A three-time winner on the PGA Tour, Stallings nearly added a fourth title last week at the BMW Championship before ultimately falling one stroke shy of Cantlay. He would roughly double his career earnings in one week with a victory at East Lake after more than a decade on the PGA Tour. The same is true for Morikawa, Im, Burns and Niemann although they have only been on tour for a handful of years.

On the other end of the spectrum, I would not necessarily classify $18 million as a drop in the bucket, but McIlroy, Scott, Thomas and Spieth all check in inside the top 10 on the career money leaders list for the PGA Tour. That is not to say the dollar figures may not creep into the back of their minds, but they may not feel the heat as much as their counterparts down the stretch.

'can't describe it, it's just so cool:' peter malnati wins for first time in nine years at 2024 valspar championship, share this article.

fedex tour championship 2022 payout

March Madness crowned another Cinderella on Sunday, only not on the basketball court but rather at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course Palm Harbor, Florida.

Peter Malnati, who hadn’t won in nine years, drilled his tee shot at the 17 th hole to 6 feet and rolled in the putt to assume a one-stroke lead. With a finishing par, he closed with a final-round 4-under 67 to finish at 12-under 272 and win the Valspar Championship by two strokes over Cameron Young.

All the emotions poured out of Malnati, who held his four-year-old son Hatcher, and with watery eyes and a wide smile, said, “You wonder if you’re ever going to do it again.”

He had seen that winning moment on the PGA Tour so many times before where the family rushes on to the green and the victor gets a hug and kiss and lifts his child.

“That’s something that I’ve seen other families have and that has been my dream,” Malnati said. “If I had never had the moment I had today, I would have been completely fine. But, man, was that special.”

The winning moment for @PeterMalnati and his family ❤️ pic.twitter.com/V4O935j1AL — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) March 24, 2024

Indeed, it was. Malnati, a 36-year-old pro in his 10 th year on Tour, had one career victory to his credit at the 2015 Sanderson Championship. He had to battle during the fall to maintain full exempt status this season by finishing 120 th on the season-long points list. He’s ranked No. 184 in the world, the second-highest world ranking for the winner of the Valspar in tournament history and he drew the angst of his fellow pros who felt he was unworthy when he was awarded a sponsor invite into the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February. Moreover, winning at the Copperhead Course, where he had missed the cut in six of his seven starts at the Valspar Championship, with a career-best of T-60, seemed a pipe dream. To make matters worse, he entered this week coming off a final-round 81 at the Players Championship.

“I just kind of had to chalk that up as just one of those days you get in golf …I was off on all facets of the game,” he said. “When I got here and got to work on Tuesday I was really pleased, everything felt kind of as it had most of the week at Sawgrass, not how it did on Sunday. So I just haven’t missed a beat.”

His first-round 66 was a career-best at the Copperhead Course and just his second in the 60s in 17 career rounds at Innisbrook Resort. But despite his choppy record, it never diminished his appreciation of the course.

“I love this kind of course because I think it really distinguishes good ball striking from mediocre ball striking,” he said.

He followed with an even-par 71 during difficult weather on Friday and shot 68 on Saturday to trail 54-hole leader Keith Mitchell by two strokes. Malnati reveled in the opportunity to be in the trophy hunt.

“It’s why I play and practice, to come out here on the PGA Tour and have a chance to win golf tournaments. This is my 10th season. I can’t think of very many times where I’ve actually teed off on Sunday realistically thinking of winning the tournament,” Malnati said.

VALSPAR: Winner’s bag | Prize money

The former Missouri Tiger is a career grinder, who works as hard as anyone on his putting routine and has added the responsibility of serving as a player director on the Tour policy board during a critical time in the Tour’s future. It’s been a lot to balance but through it all family always comes first for Malnati. Take his explanation on Saturday for why he plays with a yellow golf ball , which he began using at the 3M Open in July.

“The reason I switched to it is because my, at the time, 3-year old, who is now 4, liked them. And so, he’s kind of over it now, but it still makes me think of him, and that’s worth a smile or two, which is worth a lot out there for me,” he said.

On Sunday all of Malnati’s discipline and hard work paid off. He overcame a slow start, missing a 5-foot par putt at No. 4 and nearly cold-topping a fairway wood at the fifth, which didn’t cost him. He sank a 14-foot birdie putt at the sixth and made his move with three straight birdies to start the second nine. That included making a 15-foot putt at No. 12 that he was convinced he’d missed.

“The minute I hit it I thought I had left it short,” he said. “I wasn’t watching the ball roll because I knew it was going to stop this far short and I was going to tap it in. And then I heard the crowd go nuts.”

He added: “I always hear people say, like, sometimes when you win, some things have to happen and go right.”

Six different players held or shared the lead during the final round and 10 players were within three shots of the lead on the back nine, but ultimately several players took themselves out of the running with an assortment of mistakes and the tournament turned into a two-man race between Young, the Tour’s Rookie of the Year two years ago who was seeking his first PGA Tour win, and Malnati, winless for the last 3,058 days.

Young hooked his tee shot into trouble at 18 and by the time he assessed the situation, Malnati had pulled ahead at 12 under with birdie after his clutch 5-iron from 208 yards at 17. Young managed to find the green but left his 51-foot birdie effort nine feet short and missed for par.

“I just over read it a hair,” said Young, who recorded his seventh runner-up finish, the most of any player without a win in the last 40 years.

For Malnati, he earned his first berth in the Masters, a spot in the PGA Championship, all of the remaining Signature events this season and the Sentry in January.

“He played incredible. He deserved to win,” said Mackenzie Hughes, who finished T-3 with rookie Chandler Phillips, who notched his best finish on Tour. “He played better than I did. He was in control of his golf ball.”

Young’s closing bogey gave Malnati a two-shot cushion. He had always dreamed of his wife and kids running on the green to celebrate his victory and now the moment he waited for was upon him.

“I don’t think I saw ’em until after I hit the first putt, but I definitely saw ’em before I tapped in, and I was, man, I had lost it before I had hit my last shot of the tournament, for sure,” he said, “but luckily it was like literally 2 inches from the hole. But, yeah, that moment’s pretty amazing.”

Even better than he always dreamed it would be.

2022 Tour Championship purse, prize money: Payout for Rory McIlroy, golfers in FedEx Cup Playoffs at East Lake

History and a whole lot of money were on the line this week at east lake.

fedex tour championship 2022 payout

A record-setting year on the PGA Tour ended in record fashion with the largest prize pool in league history up for grabs Sunday at the 2022 Tour Championship. Between deferral payments and bonuses, a total of $75 million was at stake for the best players on the PGA Tour with $18 million going to Rory McIlroy , who came from six strokes back in the fourth round to win the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup for a record third time.

To put into perspective the size of this prize pool, it is just slightly less than that of the Players Championship, Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open and The Open ... combined . The entirety of the purse is enough to weigh on players' minds, but the grand prize alone creates some unease on the back nine Sunday given it surpasses every prize pool this season apart from the Players Championship.

Two of those championship checks were deposited into the bank account of Cameron Smith, who began the week six strokes behind FedEx Cup No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. The reigning Masters champion, Scheffler earned roughly $4 million more than the Australian throughout the 2021-22 season. He was able to add $5.75 million more to his total, ultimately falling to McIlroy by a single stroke.

Let's look at how the payouts for the 2022 Tour Championships were divided among those who competed this week at East Lake.

2022 Tour Championship purse, prize money

Total purse: $75 million (FedEx Cup bonus)

1st -- $18,000,000 -- Rory McIlroy 2nd -- $6,500,000 -- Sungjae Im, Scottie Scheffler ($5.75 million each) 3rd -- $5,000,000 4th -- $4,000,000 -- Xander Schauffele 5th -- $3,000,000 -- Max Homa, Justin Thomas ($2.75 million each) 6th -- $2,500,000 7th -- $2,000,000 -- Sepp Straka, Patrick Cantlay ($1.75 million each) 8th -- $1,500,000 9th -- $1,250,000 -- Tony FInau 10th -- $1,000,000 -- Tom Hoge 11th -- $950,000 -- Joaquin Niemann, Hideki Matsuyama ($925,000 each) 12th -- $900,000 13th -- $850,000 -- Jordan Spieth, Aaron Wise ($825,000 each) 14th -- $800,000 15th -- $760,000 -- Viktor Hovland, Matthew Fitzpatrick, J.T. Poston, Jon Rahm ($715,000 each) 16th -- $720,000 17th -- $700,000 18th -- $680,000 19th -- $660,000 -- Cameron Young 20th -- $640,000 -- Cameron Smith 21st -- $620,000 -- Brian Harman, Billy Horschel, Collin Morikawa ($600,000 each) 22nd -- $600,000 23rd -- $580,000 24th -- $565,000 -- Sam Burns 25th -- $550,000 -- Adam Scott 26th -- $540,000 -- Corey Conners 27th -- $530,000 -- Kyoung-Hoon Lee 28th -- $520,000 -- Sahith Theegala 29th -- $510,000 -- Scott Stallings 30th -- $500,000 -- Will Zalatoris (DNP)

Due to his withdrawal from the Tour Championship, Zalatoris was awarded the 30th-place prize. Golfers who finished between 31st and 150th in the FedEx Cup received between $85,000 and $250,000 in deferred money following the St. Jude Invitational and BMW Championship.

2024 The Valspar Championship: Power Rankings, Defending Champion, Prize Money, and Major Details

T he golf world is currently calming down from the exciting golf they witnessed, all thanks to Scottie Scheffler’s spectacular display at THE PLAYERS Championship . Meanwhile, the PGA Tour is here with yet another exhilarating event and talented golfers at the Copperhead Course. The Valspar Championship will kick off on March 21 and will see itself end with its final round on Sunday, March 24.

The tournament, which is the 13th one on the 2024 PGA Tour calendar, will see the field of athletes teeing it off for a cut from the total $8.4 million prize purse. Regardless of the number of golfers participating, only one person will, at the end of the day, emerge victorious at the same to clinch the title and trophy!

The top contenders at The Valspar Championship

The final stop at the Florida Swing of the Jay Monahan-led circuit will have as many as 156 golfers duking it out for the reward at the Innisbrook Resort, as opposed to the usual 144. This was done to increase the playing time for the many Tour members with fully exempt status. However, the field, as of Monday afternoon, is set at 155 owing to Ton Kim’s withdrawal from the same. Regardless, there will undoubtedly be a lot of top contenders aiming for the win.

1. Taylor Moore: Currently ranked No. 62 in the world, the 30-year-old won the 2023 edition of the Valspar Championship with a score of 10 under 274. Although he has yet to make his mark on the 2024 PGA Tour calendar, the golfer has managed to finish once inside the top 25 at the Sentry in the seven starts he made during the season. Nevertheless, the athlete will be hoping to clinch his fourth professional victory and the second on the PGA Tour, all the while hoping to become the third person to successfully defend the title at the event.

2. Xander Schauffele : The world No. 5 put up a scintillating display of golf at the recently ended event, which is deemed ‘The Fifth Major’. Fascinatingly, he was able to finish in the runner-up position all the while carding a total of 22 birdies and an eagle over the four days. What’s more, the American pro has managed to finish a total of four times inside the top 10 in the six starts he made in 2024, excluding the PLAYERS. Underestimating him is the worst thing any golfer on the field can do.

3. Brian Harman: The 37-year-old, out of the eight starts he made in 2024 on both the PGA Tour and the European circuit, has finished a total of four times inside the top 20, the best of which came while playing at the TPC Sawgrass in the T2 position. Thus, he would be even more determined to clinch the title of champion and increase his tally of wins to four on the Monahan-led circuit, the last of which came at the 2023 Open Championship. He is undoubtedly a favorite to win the event, especially after his recent performance.

4. Justin Thomas : Although he missed the cut at the recent tournament and the Genesis Invitational, Thomas has managed to finish inside the top 12 in the rest of the four events out of his six starts in 2024. His best, out of the same, came from the American Express, where the golfer was able to finish at T3. What’s more, before the year’s start, he placed a total of three times inside the top-5 in the three starts he made from September at the Fortinet Championship, the Nedbank Golf Challenge, and the Hero World Challenge. Undoubtedly a talented athlete on the greens.

5. Sam Burns: The 27-year-old is one of the four golfers who have won the tournament two times, in 2021 and 2022 and the only athlete apart from Paul Casey (2018, and 2019) who has successfully defended his title of champion. Moreover, the pro, who is currently No. 19 in the world, has a good record in 2024 with four top-10 finishes out of the seven starts, the best of which was T3 at the WM Phoenix Open. They say the third time’s the charm and he will surely be looking forward to another win on the PGA Tour.

A challenge for the PGA Tour Pros at Innisbrook Resort

The par-71, 7209-yard layout is ranked as the 7th toughest course on the PGA Tour and is one of the most famous of the four courses that Innisbrook contains. The grounds have played host to the Valspar Championship for a long time and thus have many pine tree-lined fairways, rolling terrains, and wildlife, among others.

Meanwhile, the course would indubitably prove to be a challenge for the many professional golfers who are set to tee it up on Thursday. What’s more, the presence of the Snake Pit, which helps close the inward half, would surely test the mettle of the athletes. The golf world sure is in for an exciting weekend!
