Denali, Alaska National Park

BEAUTY TO GO WILD OVER

With vast forests, rolling tundra, mighty rivers, pristine lakes and towering mountains, you will feel tempted to continue exploring the outdoors with Alaska land tours after your cruise. Whether in remote outposts or cities surrounded by wilderness, the people who call the Great Land home share an independent spirit, a strong sense of community and a love of Alaska’s wild beauty so their welcome will make your visit truly memorable.

Anchorage, Alaska Glaciers

URBAN MEETS EPIC

Alaska’s biggest city, Anchorage, is set between the sparkling waters of Cook Inlet and the dramatic snow-capped Chugach Mountains. Few places in the world can match its appealing blend of metropolitan pursuits and outdoor living. Anchorage is at its most exuberant during the summer, when locals make the most of the mild temperatures and long days to stay out late into the sunny night. The big city also boasts Alaska’s biggest and most diverse dining scene, from great burger joints and craft breweries to classic steakhouses and cosmopolitan cuisine.

Denali, Alaska Tallest Peak

SIX MILLION ACRES OF DISCOVERY

Towering high in the center of the Alaska Range is the Denali, North America’s tallest peak at 20,310 feet. Central to the cultural heritage of the native peoples who have lived here for thousands of years, the giant mountain is the ultimate symbol of the Alaskan wild. Denali National Park remains a wild kingdom, where animals large and small, roam free. View Dall sheep, wolves, caribou, moose and the mighty grizzly bear among many. And come summer, they are joined by more than 160 species of migratory birds.

CITY OF GOLD AT THE EDGE OF THE ARCTIC

Back in 1901, riverboat captain E.T. Barnette ran aground in the shallows of the Chena, so he set up a trading post. A year later, the nearby discovery of gold transformed the remote settlement into a boomtown, and Barnette the first mayor. Fairbanks today remains a destination for adventure seekers, as the gateway to Alaska’s northern wilds and some its most isolated terrain. While home to just 32,000, Fairbanks is the big city of the interior and cultural hub for the sparsely populated region. You can still go for the gold in Fairbanks, panning just like the early prospectors did.

INCLUDED ADVENTURES DISCOVER ALASKA YOUR WAY

No two travelers are exactly alike. That’s why a Royal Caribbean Cruisetour includes thoughtfully-curated experiences, like panning for gold at a mining camp in Fairbanks, scouting bears and caribou at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, and scoping views on an aerial tram ride to the summit of Mount Alyeska — plus many more. Each option is designed to complement your own independent explorations for a complete and memorable Alaska vacation crafted with you in mind.

Alaska Fairbanks Family Gold Panning

GOLD DREDGE 8

The discovery of hold transformed Alaska, and the Gold Dredge 8 tour brings the state's gold rush history and mining heritage to life. Over three decades, the pan-like dredge extracted gold just outside downtown Fairbanks. Years after closing, it re-opened as a national historic district and is a popular attraction. You'll travel there aboard a replica narrow-gauge train whose conductor shares tales of the early prospectors. Then watch the giant dredge - itself an engineering landmark - in action before getting hands-on, panning for gold the old-fashioned way. Explore the camp where the miners lived, and then enjoy some cookies and hot coffee while your fortune is weighed.

Alaska, Wildlife Moose

ALASKA WILDLIFE CONSERVATION CENTER

Near the very end of the Turnagain Arm Waterway, along the scenic Seward Highway, this center provides a sanctuary for native Alaskan animals in need. Here you can get up close to the orphaned, injured or displaced animals, all under expert care in their natural habitats so that they can be reintroduced into the wild. The resident population varies by the season but can include caribou and moose calves, fawns, porcupines, birds, lynx, and brown and black bears.

Alaska, Cruise Tours Alyeska Tram

ALYESKA AERIAL TRAM

Outside of a flightseeing tour, the Alyeska Aerial Tram in Girdwood delivers Alaska's best panoramic views in a matter of minutes. From the Alyeska Resort at the base of Mount Alyeska, you'll ascend 2,300 feet to the summit. From the tram, you can see for miles, with even more expansive vistas from the mountaintop observation deck. The panorama includes the seven hanging glaciers and the snow-capped peaks of the Chugach Mountains, the forested Chugach valley and out to the sparkling waters of the Turnagain Arm waterway. Be sure to look down, too, and you may see wildlife ambling across the mountain's slope.

The 13 most affordable alaska cruises for 2024 & beyond.

The Most Affordable Alaska Cruises

The Holland America Noordam in Skagway.

There's no better time than now to book your dream vacation to The Great Land. Cruise vacations are more popular than ever, and affordable cruises are getting harder to find – especially for beloved destinations like Alaska.

Cruisers can nab some of the lines' best deals of the year during wave season. This period, which extends from January to March, refers to the "tidal wave" of lower pricing across the cruising industry during this time. Some cruise lines even kick off their sales in December, so it's advisable to begin your search for discounted pricing early.

Below, we've included some of the best Alaska cruise deals available right now for sailings in 2024 and 2025. All quoted prices are per person for double occupancy and were accurate at the time of writing. Keep in mind: Each itinerary may be available on multiple dates; we've listed the date with the lowest starting price to get you the best value.

Read on to explore the top options for an affordable Alaska cruise.

Holland America Line

The Holland America Noordam in Yakutat Bay.

Holland America's "Time of Your Life" wave season deal features up to 40% off bookings for select sailings from summer 2024 through spring 2025; the sale ends at the end of February. You can also add the premium "Have It All" bundle. This added perk features a signature drink package , specialty dining, shore excursions and Wi-Fi access. The exact pricing and benefits of the package depend on the length of the cruise. The wave season pricing also features a complimentary stateroom upgrade, reduced deposits, and free or discounted fares for kids.

7-Day Glacier Discovery Southbound

Holland America's seven-day voyage aboard Noordam includes an afternoon cruising in Hubbard Glacier and a full day of sailing through picturesque Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. The ship also calls on the ports of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, with one additional day of scenic cruising on the Inside Passage, before disembarking in Vancouver. Plan to stay an extra day in Vancouver to explore on your own, or opt for a hop-on, hop-off sightseeing tour with Holland America (complete with luggage service and an airport transfer) before taking a flight home later that evening.

This southbound itinerary is also available on May 25, 2025, aboard Nieuw Amsterdam , starting at $679 per person.

7-Day Alaska Inside Passage

This round-trip sailing on Zaandam from Vancouver highlights the Inside Passage with a day of scenic cruising, plus a limited stop in Tracy Arm Inlet for excursions, before reaching the coastal towns of Juneau and Skagway. Then, you'll enjoy another day of scenic cruising in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, followed by a stop in Ketchikan and cruising the Inside Passage before disembarking in Vancouver .

The Tracy Arm fjord features glacier-covered mountains and the largest intact coastal temperate rainforest in the country. It is also home to abundant wildlife, including whales, harbor seals, bald eagles, bears and mountain goats. Book the Tracy Arm Fjord & Glacier Explorer excursion to see the majestic beauty of the Tracy Arm wilderness and the twin Sawyer Glaciers up close. You might even see and hear ice calving into the pristine waters. You'll cruise through Stephens Passage on your way back to meet the ship in Juneau.

Zaandam sails this itinerary in 2025, as well. The lowest fare starts at $629 per person for the voyage on May 14, 2025.

Princess Cruises

The Majestic Princess in Skagway.

Princess Cruises' wave season deals feature up to 40% off cruise prices, complimentary room upgrades, $100 deposits, and free fares for third and fourth guests in the same stateroom or suite. The advertised fares on the Princess Cruises website are for the line's MedallionClass experience, which includes dining at the complimentary onboard restaurants, entertainment on the ship, fitness facilities, and the youth and teen clubs. You can add optional upgrades, such as a beverage package, specialty dining, shore excursions and Wi-Fi access, either individually or with a Princess Plus or Princess Premier package.

7-Day Voyage of the Glaciers with Glacier Bay (Northbound)

Princess' seven-day itinerary aboard Grand Princess features the lowest available fare for the line's 2024 Alaska season. The itinerary starts with a relaxing sea day, followed by stops in three ports of call in Alaska: Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. You'll also have two days of scenic cruising in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord before disembarking in Whittier, near Anchorage .

The southbound voyage (which is the reverse itinerary) on Grand Princess departs May 15, 2024, from Anchorage and also starts at $398 per person. Or, you can sail that southbound itinerary on Sapphire Princess on May 18, 2024, for the same price.

In 2025, you can book this itinerary on Caribbean Princess for as low as $467 per person, embarking on May 10, 2025.

7-Day Inside Passage (Roundtrip Vancouver)

This shoulder season sailing in September is available on Grand Princess. The round-trip voyage from Vancouver features two days at sea; one day of scenic cruising in Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier; and stops in the coastal towns of Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan. While on the ship, spend warmer days outdoors relaxing at The Sanctuary, an adults-only venue. You can also experience one of the line's Discovery at SEA enrichment programs on board, or book one of the affiliated excursions ashore.

This Grand Princess itinerary is also available on May 27, 2025, for as low as $547 per person.

Norwegian Cruise Line

The Norwegian Jewel in Alaska.

Norwegian's current "Free At Sea" promotion includes a free unlimited open bar package, free specialty dining, free shore excursions and complimentary Wi-Fi access. You'll also find additional deals like 50% off deposits, free third and fourth guests (or $99 per additional person, depending on the sailing), and free airfare for a second guest. Be sure to check the terms and conditions before booking a Norwegian sailing.

7-Day Alaska: Hubbard Glacier & Skagway

Norwegian's sailing from Seward to Vancouver on Norwegian Jewel features two days cruising through Hubbard Glacier, where you'll be able to book the Hubbard Glacier & Wilderness Explorer excursion for an up-close look at North America's largest tidewater glacier. Afterward, the ship calls on Icy Strait Point, Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan (Ward Cove).

In Ketchikan, reserve a spot for the Alaskan Cultural & Lumberjack Show Experience, which includes an entertaining show, a chance to learn about Alaska Native culture, and a tasting of local food and wines. Alaska also offers some of the best fishing conditions in North America, so anglers may want to consider booking a private excursion to go fishing for halibut or salmon. After several days in port, enjoy one more day of scenic cruising through the Inside Passage before disembarking in Vancouver.

In 2025, the seven-day Hubbard Glacier & Skagway itinerary will sail from Vancouver to Whittier. The lowest fare for this cruise starts at $529 per person aboard the Norwegian Jade on May 5, 2025.

7-Day Alaska: Glacier Bay, Skagway & Juneau

This sailing on Norwegian Jewel departs from Vancouver and includes three sea days cruising the Inside Passage, Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and Hubbard Glacier. The itinerary also calls on the ports of Ketchikan (Ward Cove), Juneau and Skagway.

The 13-mile-long Mendenhall Glacier is one of the top attractions in Juneau, and the line offers a variety of excursions to view the impressive ice sheet. For a bucket list adventure, splurge on the helicopter and dog-sledding excursion to Mendenhall Glacier from Skagway. You can also opt for another once-in-a-lifetime trip: a flightseeing tour by floatplane. You'll fly into the wilderness, kayak across a stream and then hike the surface of the Norris Glacier, a remote glacier in the Coast Mountains that's only accessible by plane or on foot.

If you're looking forward to 2025, you can book a similar itinerary from Whittier to Vancouver on April 28, 2025, starting at $499 per person on Norwegian Jade.

7-Day Alaska from Seattle

This seven-day voyage on Carnival Spirit sails round-trip from Seattle and features one day to explore the ship while at sea, plus a scenic cruising day in Tracy Arm Fjord. Ports of call include Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, as well as a late evening stop in Victoria before you disembark the next day in Seattle. For your day in Ketchikan, consider booking the award-winning Bering Sea Crab Fishermen's Tour on the famed Aleutian Ballad from the Discovery Channel show, "Deadliest Catch."

This itinerary is also offered on Carnival Luminosa . If you are sailing in 2025, you can book the same seven-day cruise starting at $609 per person for the April 14 voyage on Carnival Spirit.

Shorter cruises

A shorter cruise may be an attractive option if you don't have extensive vacation time or you prefer to spend a few days ashore before or after your sailing. If kids are in tow for the adventure – and it's your first time cruising with them – you might also want fewer days at sea to test the waters (literally). See our pick of competitively priced four- and five-night Alaska cruises, below.

Princess Cruises: 4-Day Alaska Sampler

This 2025 cruise aboard Discovery Princess includes one port of call, Ketchikan, and two days at sea between Vancouver and Seattle. This 4-Day Alaska Sampler itinerary is also offered on May 13, 2025, on Royal Princess , with a starting price of $327 per person. The reverse itinerary (Seattle to Vancouver) is offered on May 23, 2025, on Grand Princess; pricing starts at $347 per person.

Princess Cruises: 5-Day Alaska Sampler

If you want to sail with Princess for one extra day, consider booking the five-day sampler cruise sailing round-trip from Vancouver. This early season itinerary aboard Caribbean Princess calls on Sitka and Ketchikan, offering more time ashore to explore these two popular coastal towns along Alaska's Inside Passage. Guests will also have two sea days to enjoy activities and dining experiences on the ship.

How to find the best Alaska cruise deals

Book during wave season.

As previously mentioned, you can take advantage of some of the best deals of the year during wave season. Promotions offered during wave season include lower cruise fares, reduced deposits and onboard credits. You can also find special rates (or free fares) for the third and fourth guests in the same room, making this the perfect time to book a family cruise .

In addition, look for discounts on higher-level staterooms and suites, or even accommodations in exclusive areas of the ship, such as The Haven on Norwegian Cruise Line or The Retreat on Celebrity Cruises. These private spaces offer swanky extras like luxurious accommodations, all-inclusive pricing , butler service, a team of attendants and concierge service, as well as private restaurants, lounges and pools. With lower pricing, wave season may be the best time to splurge on a cruise vacation in one of these upscale enclaves.

Promotional pricing beyond wave season

If you miss booking your cruise during wave season, don't panic. Many lines offer special pricing and flash sales throughout the year and advertise lower fares for voyages during Alaska's shoulder seasons, which fall in May and September.

"You will always find the more affordable Alaska cruises toward the beginning and end of the season. This year, the Alaska cruise season begins in April and continues through October," says Chris Gray Faust, executive editor of Cruise Critic. She adds, "The challenge with shoulder season Alaska cruises is that the weather might not be the best – it can snow in Alaska in April and early May – and in the fall, the nights will be longer (although, there is a chance you might see northern lights )."

In addition to giving up the warmer summer weather (and possibly having snow), you may also miss some optimal wildlife viewing opportunities if you cruise early or late in the season. For example, the peak time for bear-watching excursions extends from mid-June to mid-August, which falls during the height of the Alaska cruise season in July and August.

If you're looking for other ways to save money on your cruise, Gray Faust advises that older ships also provide more value when you're looking for deals.

It's important to note that a few of this year's wave deals extend just until the end of February 2024, so you'll need to refer to the individual cruise line websites to see the exact dates for the special offers. You may also be able to find lower prices on some discount and aggregator sites, like Cruise Critic, Cruises.com and Priceline.

How we are saving almost 50% on airfare for our cruise to Alaska

Summer Hull

If the last few years have taught or reinforced any lessons, it is to always, always take the trip when the option presents itself. That includes those big, intimidating, once-in-a-lifetime adventures that can feel scary to put into motion.

With that in mind, we recently booked a big, expensive, two-cabin cruise to Alaska for the summer of 2023. The trip will include not only my kids, who will somehow already be 13 and 8 next summer, but also my parents. This includes my dad, who at 74 years young by next summer has never sailed — and likely won't other than on this one, big trip.

To sail from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Alaska (and back), you obviously have to first get to Vancouver. And with weeklong cruises to Alaska already pretty pricey, the prospect of also needing five round-trip summertime airfare tickets is ... painful.

Since there are only so many ways to save on the Alaska Disney cruise itself (and we are using every tip in the book), I'm also leaning into using every trick to save on airfare that I can muster.

After going through the gamut of various ways to save on airfare, I've landed on what may be the best way to book airfare when cruising to Alaska: the Alaska Airlines companion certificate .

Sign up for TPG's daily newsletter to get points and miles coverage like this delivered to your inbox.

Flying to Seattle vs. Vancouver

Some cruise lines sail to Alaska from Seattle, while others depart from Vancouver.

Examples of some cruise lines that depart from Vancouver include Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Silversea, Holland America and our chosen line, Disney. Because of complex laws and regulations , cruises that sail from Seattle still have to make a stop in Canada, but that's a tale for a different story.

If you choose to book an Alaska cruise on a line that departs from Vancouver, it may still be in your best interest to fly to Seattle.

Royal Caribbean Ovation of the Seas Alaska

Even ignoring the different levels of paperwork and regulations required to fly internationally into Canada versus staying within the U.S., the price of tickets alone may quickly drive you to look back south of the border.

Using our summer 2023 sailing dates as an example, tickets from Houston to Vancouver start at $600 to $700 round-trip per person — and all but the priciest options require a connection.

However, nonstop airfare prices to Seattle for the very same dates range from $300 to $450 round-trip per person. Obviously, prices vary by date and originating city, but outside of unique sales or situations, I'd expect the pattern of Vancouver costing more than Seattle to largely hold for departures from other U.S. cities.

You need to also factor in the cost, time and hassle of getting from Seattle to the port in Vancouver when making your decision. But quickly cutting airfare costs for five people by up to half by flying to Seattle instead of Vancouver frees up some room and tolerance for those factors.

We've done that roughly three-hour drive before to go skiing in Whistler, British Columbia , and it wasn't too bad, even with the border crossing. But, with a weeklong cruise, you do need to get creative so that you aren't paying for a rental and parking for days that you are at sea and aren't using it.

One option to get from Seattle to Vancouver includes the Amtrak Cascades train, which is scheduled to return later in 2022. For now, the route is operated by buses, but the train should return before next summer. Right now, non-discounted prices are starting at $68 each way, with 50% discounts for kids and 10% discounts for seniors.

Another option would be doing two one-way car rentals, but note that not all car rental agencies permit one-way international rentals. Budget and Avis are two rental options that, based on searches, do permit these one-way rentals.

The Alaska Airlines Companion Fare

It just so happens that one of Alaska Airlines ' hubs is in Seattle. And while this will obviously vary, in our case, it has the cheapest flight option by a pretty healthy margin.

But that's just the beginning of the story.

Alaska Airlines has a buy-one-get-one companion voucher awarded at each credit card account anniversary year (and sometimes one comes as part of a card's sign-up bonus, too). It has very few use restrictions, as long as you are flying within the United States.

You get this annual certificate just by having an Alaska Airlines credit card , including the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card and Alaska Airlines Visa® Business card .

As a relevant aside, if you are in the market, the Alaska Airlines Visa Business card has welcome bonus of 50,000 bonus miles and Alaska's Famous Companion Fare; ($99 fare plus taxes and fees from $23) after you make $3,000 or more in purchases within the first 90 days of opening your account.

To use the Alaska Airlines companion voucher, purchase one economy fare on a domestic Alaska Airlines-operated flight with your Alaska Airlines credit card (aka not using miles) and then the second ticket will cost you just $99 plus some taxes and fees, which in this case are just under $37.

flight and cruise packages to alaska

That translates to paying for one ticket to Seattle at a rate that is already a few hundred dollars less than flying into Vancouver — and getting the second ticket for $135.63, which in an era when summer airfare has been quite the bear, is a relief.

Total savings on airfare for our Alaska cruise

We currently have five people planning to go on the cruise, but I'm going to show cash airfare numbers just for four people — because we are likely using miles for the fifth as the companion certificate works best in pairs.

For four nonstop, round-trip tickets from Houston to Seattle on our preferred dates and times (using Alaska Airlines companion vouchers for two of those tickets), our cash cost is $1,145.68.

flight and cruise packages to alaska

If we instead purchased four nonstop tickets from Houston to Vancouver for our needed times and dates, it would cost $2,976.

That $1,830 in savings is a pretty big price difference in my book — and that's on top of some of the easier logistics of just flying domestically instead of internationally.

Naturally, we'll need to deduct from the savings the ultimate price of a train, bus or car to go from Seattle to Vancouver and back again, once we decide on those details as the sailing gets a bit closer. What we'll likely do as a hedge is book one-way car rentals to and from Seattle and Vancouver. Currently, prices for two one-way rentals are starting at around $400. Hopefully, with the train coming back online and the relevant child and other discounts, our ground transportation prices will get a little lower, but at least we know it shouldn't get worse than that.

flight and cruise packages to alaska

Bottom line

There isn't one best way that applies in all situations, but if you are planning an Alaska cruise and Alaska Airlines operates from your home airport, using an Alaska Airlines companion certificate from a cobranded credit card to fly two people to Seattle for less is a tactic worth considering to bring down the total airfare cost.

This is especially true if your Alaska cruise departs from Seattle, but even if you depart from Vancouver, it can still be worth it to fly to Seattle in some situations. Needing a handful of tickets makes the savings even greater for us since we do have access to multiple companion vouchers.

By saving on airfare, you have more cash for other things — such as booking some of the best Alaska cruise shore excursions .

Alaskan Cruise Packages Including Airfare

Erin is a digital media specialist with many years of experience covering a wide variety of topics for a number of websites and publications.

Learn about our Editorial Policy .

Alaska is a popular travel destination, and it's one that is often explored via a cruise. Since many lines offer competing Alaska cruises, offering options that include airfare is one way to help cruise lines set themselves apart.

Luxury All-Inclusive Alaska Cruise Packages

AlaskaCruises.com from iCruise.com has all-inclusive Alaska cruise packages that include air, hotel, cruise, and more. Cruises take place on Regent Seven Seas Cruises and start at $4,799 per person. For that price, you can expect:

  • Airfare, a night at the Hilton Anchorage, and transfers/baggage handling
  • Unlimited fine wine and premium spirits, Wi-Fi, pre-paid gratuities and specialty dining
  • Unlimited shore excursions
  • $300 shipboard credit per suite, American Express gift card
  • Reduction in deposit
  • 150 Would You Rather Questions for Couples

If you book Concierge Suites and higher, you get additional benefits like pre- or post- cruise land program on select voyages, priority online shore excursion reservations, 15 minutes of free ship-to-shore phone time, and discounts on select purchases. Penthouse Suites and higher enjoy Concierge-Level amenities, plus an iPad and iPhone docking station, butler service, and choice of L'Occitane or Hermes soaps, shampoos, and lotions.

Cruise Options

Examples of the Alaska cruises that fall under the special package include:

  • Luxury on the Frontier 8 Nights/9 Days: Starts in Vancouver and ends in Anchorage. Prices for suites start at $4,799.
  • In the Wake of Humpbacks 11 Nights/12 Days : Starts in Anchorage and ends in Vancouver. Prices for suites from $7,469.
  • Season of the Brown Bear 12 Nights/13 Days : Departs from Vancouver and ends in Anchorage. Prices for suites from $8,299.

Air Inclusive Program

Airfare is included from U.S. and Canadian gateway cities including popular hubs like Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, New York, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Seattle, San Francisco, Toronto, and Vancouver.

Ponant Cruises

Ponant Cruises is a French cruise ship operator founded in 1998. Ponant has five small cruise ships operating under the French flag. Their cruises operate all around the world, including some itineraries in Alaska. These ultra-luxurious cruises also include airfare in some cases: generally domestic flights, but also some long haul international options.

The Northwest Passage

The Northwest Passage is a 23-day/22-night cruise departing from Kangerlussuaq, Greenland and arriving in Nome, Alaska. It includes flights from Paris to Kangerlussuaq and Nome to Seattle (economy class). Several ports include:

  • Sisimiut : Second biggest town in Greenland
  • Ilulissat : UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Inalik : Heart of the Bering Sea, between Alaska and Russia
  • Fairway Rock : Small rocky island between Russia and Alaska, home to many marine birds, seals, and walruses.
  • King Island : Once inhabited by the Iñupiat, but now the Alaskan island is abandoned
  • Nome : Westernmost point of Alaska, once a former gold-mining town set in the middle of the wilderness

This is a luxury expedition cruise that goes off the beaten path and visits ports most other cruise lines can't. One thing to note with Ponant cruises is that due to the remote nature and length of time at sea, you need to provide a medical certificate from your doctor no more than 45 days prior to departure, as well as a completed medical questionnaire.

Prices start at €24,450 (about $29,000 US) for Prestige Deck 4.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises offers several Alaska itineraries , including the Great Northwest , which is an 11-day voyage departing San Francisco and ending in Vancouver. Like other Alaska cruises, these stop in popular places like Ketchikan and Juneau, while cruising through the Inside Passage and Hubbard Glacier.

Rates in the OLife Fare category include airfare from approximately 20 cities. Rates start at $3,049 for an Inside Stateroom and go up to $11,649 for the Owner's Suite. Without airfare, the same cruise is $2,399 to $10,999.

With the OLife Fare class, you get additional benefits depending on cabin class. Free internet is provided on one device per stateroom, while Owner's, Vista and Oceania Suites receive access for two devices per suite. Some shore excursions are available, and voyages of this length get six free shore excursions.

Booking Airfare Through Cruise Lines

In some cases, you won't find bundled cruises and airfare packages like the aforementioned examples, but some cruise lines offer the ability to book your airfare in conjunction with your cruise. This is often at a discounted rate and can be bundled in one payment with the cruise line directly. Most require you call an 800 number to book your airfare, but Princess Cruises lets you compare airfare online when you're deciding on specific cruises.

Princess Cruises

With Princess Cruises , you can explore the Inside Passage on a seven-day round trip cruise from Seattle or Vancouver, a 10-day round trip from San Francisco, and a 12-day round trip cruise from Los Angeles. One-way cruises last seven days, departing northbound from Vancouver or southbound from Anchorage.

Some examples of pricing, including adding on airfare with Princess EZair flights , are:

  • 7-Days Seattle / Inside Passage with Glacier Bay National Park : Rates start from $864 for an interior stateroom. Flights from Newark are $401.21 (flexible) on United Airlines, making the cruise $1,265.21 per person. Flights from Denver on Alaska Airlines are $154.24 (flexible), making the cruise $1,018.24 per person.
  • 10-Days San Francisco / Inside Passage : Interior staterooms start at $1,399. Flights from Atlanta are $421.89 on American Airlines, making the cruise $1,820.89 per person. Flights from New York (JFK) are $254.67 on Delta, making the cruise $1,653.67.

2018 is an ideal time to choose Princess Cruises for your Alaska cruise as they are really ramping up their offerings. They will have 130 cruise departures , with more than 75% sailing to Glacier Bay National Park. There are also over 22 cruisetour options that give travelers the option to visit the interior of Alaska. There is a full season of visits to Icy Strait Point, which are included on all seven-day northbound Voyage of the Glaciers itineraries.

Pros and Cons of Cruise Packages

There are lengthy discussions on sites like Cruise Critic about the pros and cons of booking air/sea packages. In some cases, you don't fly with major carriers, and benefits and customer service can be minimal. You also give up flexibility in some cases as the cruise line/airline chooses the route, which could mean connecting through two to three cities rather than a direct flight or flights with only one layover. The other risk is if you are booking close to the cruise departure time, you may not have an actual assigned seat and find yourself bumped off the plane in favor of a paying customer who booked earlier.

Choosing the Right Alaskan Cruise

If you have decided an Alaska cruise air and sea package is right for you, it's important to compare each option carefully, price the airfare on your own, and talk to your travel agent to make sure you're getting the best deal and verify the most current pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Wild landscapes, captivating wildlife, and unique cultural and historic sites are the highlights of any Alaskan cruise. Sailing through the Inside Passage is considered one of the world’s great cruising experiences. Carved by glaciers over thousands of years, this natural sea lane is flanked by snow-capped mountains, huge ice cliffs, lush forest and thundering waterfalls. Most cruises spend a day sailing through the tranquil waters of the Glacier Bay National Park, where more than 1,000 giant glaciers line the winding shore. Wildlife viewing is a consistent highlight on an Alaska cruise, with whales, bears, eagles, seals, puffins, otters and countless more regularly seen from the ship or on shore excursions. You can also learn about Alaska’s fascinating Gold Rush history or hear the stories of Native Alaskan culture from its Indigenous people.

Even at the height of summer, you can expect things to be pretty chilly in Alaska. The average temperature in July and August doesn’t go much about 17 degrees Celsius and will regularly drop into single digits. That means you’ll want to pack lots of layers as well as at least one warm, waterproof jacket. At the same time, the sun can be strong so bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Comfortable walking shoes are essential (especially if you plan to be hiking) and binoculars are a great addition for wildlife spotting.

The classic Inside Passage route from Vancouver/Seattle to Anchorage is by far the most popular Alaskan cruise itinerary. This takes seven days as a one-way cruise or 14 days as a round trip. Some longer cruises are available, spending another week or so visiting smaller ports along the Alaska coast. Another popular option is to take a seven- or 14-night Inside Passage cruise and combine it with a seven-night land tour, visiting the Rocky Mountains or Denali National Park.

Most modern cruise ships offer Wi-Fi, though it will generally come at an additional cost. If you’re staying in a suite or cruising with a luxury line, some free access may be part of your package. Coverage can be patchy in remote areas though will usually be reliable in ports.

You’ll be amazed at the abundance of wildlife in Alaska. Black and brown bears can be seen all over the country and are regularly spotted in the forests of the Inside Passage. There are more than 200,000 moose in the country, so you’re almost guaranteed to see one of these enormous creatures. Caribou, wolves, muskoxen and Dall sheep can also be found throughout Alaska. On the water, humpback whales and orcas are a common sight, as well as seals, otters, dolphins and walrus. Alaska is home to the densest population of bald eagles as well as thousands of seabirds including puffins, terns, loons, shearwaters and many more.

The peak Alaska cruise season is from May to September, though some ships will be sailing as early as April and as late as October. The season is short because of the extreme weather and icy cold winters, so you won’t find any ships in Alaska outside of this period. June, July and August are the busiest months and also generally have the best weather. Be aware that this coincides with American and Canadian summer school holidays, so you can expect higher prices and lots of families onboard. The shoulder months of April-May and September-October are better for budget conscious cruisers who don’t mind the cooler weather. It rains a lot in Alaska, so you’re probably in for a few wet days whenever you sail.

Alaska is part of the United States of America, so the same entry requirements apply here. Citizens of 38 different nations don’t need a visa, but will need to apply for a Visa Waiver through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before they travel to Alaska. Be sure to check with your relevant government authority before you travel. If your cruise begins in Canada, as many do, you’ll also need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to be able to fly into the country.

Absolutely! The larger ships sailing to Alaska are packed with family-friendly features, like heated and indoor swimming pools, kids’ clubs, sports courts and games rooms, and lots of entertainment. Some of the best cruise lines for families are Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Disney Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line. Kids will also love many of the shore excursions on offer in Alaska, like sea kayaking, visiting a dog sledding camp and looking for grizzly bears.

Alaska is one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights, however you will need to take a land tour away from the coast if you want to catch them. They are rarely seen along the cruise routes and are most often visible in the Interior and Arctic regions. The town of Fairbanks, about six hours inland from Anchorage, is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights because of its long hours of darkness and increased auroral activities. The Northern Lights are only visible between August and April, so you’ll need to time your cruise at either end of the peak season.

Yes. If you are looking for a cruise that’s tailored to your favourite hobbies or interests, the smaller ships are the way to go. Hurtigruten Expeditions operate voyages themed around photography, wildlife, birdwatching, marine biology or cultural encounters.

Cruise Packages with Flights

Ready to take advantage of world-class itineraries and cruise packages? With flights reserved using Princess EZair® , you’ll benefit from even greater convenience and cost savings. Start your journey with simplified booking and affordable flight options that best complement your cruise by considering where and when you set sail. Whether you’re traveling solo or looking for the best group cruise deals, let Princess help create your best vacation yet.

Princess EZair

Imagine if planning your dream cruise vacation was as seamless as the journey. Princess EZair makes it simple to find flights. With two different pricing options available, you can enjoy the benefits of the EZair program without going beyond your budget. Choose from Flexible Fares or Restricted Fares to best meet your needs. Some benefits of the EZair program include:

  • Cost savings : When you book your air travel through EZair, enjoy exclusive low prices that may not be publicly available. Plus, see a comparison of fares to choose the one that makes the most sense for you.
  • Flexibility: If you want the freedom to change your flight, opt for our Flexible Fares option, which can often cost less than Restricted Fares. Life happens, and with this benefit, you have the ability to alter reservations up to 45 days before your departure without any cancellation fees. You’ll only pay for the cost difference of your new flight, unless the price is lower. And you can book your air travel in advance with no amount due until you make your final cruise payment.
  • Protection: With so many variables in play, flight delays can happen, but they shouldn’t disrupt your vacation plans. If you experience a flight disruption on the day of travel with EZair, we’ll work with the airline to find the next best flight, so you can still embark on your world adventures. If you miss your flight on the way home due to your cruise or transfer, we’ll even help you make new travel arrangements for your return trip.
  • Support: Though specific questions or concerns should be addressed with your airline, like seat assignments, our En Route Desk is available 24/7 as an extra level of support. We’ll help you find flights that fit your cruise with our easy-to-use tool that provides flight suggestions based on when and where you sail. That way you don’t have to worry about whether you've chosen the right flight to get you to your cruise on time. You can also easily modify your reservations if you want more time in port before or after your cruise.

Your cruise vacation is more than just a holiday. It’s the chance to unwind and explore. Princess EZair helps your journey take flight by allowing you to forgo the stress of transportation planning. Similar to putting together ideal cruise and flight packages, EZair makes it easy to coordinate flights, save on fares and ensure you land your ultimate vacation. All that’s left for you to do is sit back, relax and set sail on a dream vacation.
