A Guide To The Game of Thrones Studio Tour In Banbridge

Opened in early 2022, the Game of Thrones Studio Tour is a fantastic day out in Banbridge!

And, while many of the Game of Thrones filming locations in Ireland are outdoors, this is an entirely indoor (and rain-free!) attraction.

It allows fans of the TV series to explore actual sets, see the costumes and learn more about how the epic TV series was filmed.

It includes behind the scenes experiences, special effects, set designs and more, as you’ll discover below.

Although a visit to the Game of Thrones tour in Banbridge is fairly straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.

1. Location

The Game of Thrones Studio Tour takes place in Banbridge in Donw, in the actual Linen Mill Studios where the series was made. It is located 24 miles southwest of Belfast.

2. No on-site parking

There is no onsite parking, so visitors must park or be dropped off at the Studio Tour Car Park and board the complimentary shuttle bus to the studio entrance.

3. Opening hours

The studio is open 7 days a week. Opening times vary as shown below according to seasonal demand:

  • Jan-March and Oct-Dec: Open from 09:30 with last tour admissions at 15:30 (store and building close at 18:30 with last shuttle transfers at 19:00)

5. Tours are self-guided

There are no guided tour at Game of Thrones Studio. Visitors enjoy a self-guided tour at their own pace making it a personal experience. For additional information, there is an optional audio guide available which can be purchased with your ticket or via the app.

6. How long they last

Most visitors spend 2-3 hours touring the studio. However, it is a self-guided tour so you can spend as long as you wish in any of the sections. You can take a break for lunch or snacks and then return, and of course you’ll need time to browse for souvenirs in the gift shop.

About the Games of Thrones Studio

The Game of Thrones Studio Tour is in the authentic filming location of this popular TV series. This former Linen Mill on the outskirts of Banbridge provides a wealth of insight and information for fans.

Opened in February 2022, the new £48 million Game of Thrones Studio Tour allows visitors to be among the first to step onto a dozen original sets and absorb the atmosphere in sets such as the Winterfell Great Hall.

See where the idea was born and created by the visionary artists who interpreted the written word of George R.R.Martin, bringing the land of Westeros into reality.

Follow the journey from script to screen in the making and filming of this cult story.

See for yourself the Hall of Faces, the Crypts of Winterfell and many other sets from seasons 1 through 8. It’s awesome!

What you’ll see on the Game of Thrones Studio Tour

inside the Games of Thrones Studio

One of the reasons the studio is quickly becoming one of the more popular places to visit in Northern Ireland is due to the volume of things there are to see, such as:

1. Artistic journals

Visitors can see the initial sketches of the King’s Landing, Castle Black and Winterfell as part of the exhibits of the Artistic Journals and records. See how the artists brought the text into being.

2. The early sketches

Continue to follow the development of the series as the initial sketches take form and the unforgettable sets are created in 3D. You’ll recognise many of the locations represented Castle Black, King’s Landing and Winterfell. Follow the story through every twist and turn as relayed onscreen.

3. Visual and special effects

The power of the story comes vividly to life onscreen (and in the tour) through the futuristic visual and special effects used in the series. Learn how the award-winning Visual and Special Effects team created whole armies of living and dead characters, how epic battles were played out to create a realistic effect and learn the secrets of those fire-breathing dragons!

4. Green screens

Experience the latest visual effects techniques known as Green Screens that were used in the making of Game of Thrones. It involves overlaying two images or video streams using – you guessed it – green screen backgrounds. Once filming is complete, the filmmaker can replace the green backdrop with a digital background as part of the final production process.

5. Makeup and prosthetics

The mythical creatures that inhabitat the lawless lands north of The Wall are all created through detailed artistry. See how the makeup and prosthetics team create scary giants, White Walkers and the Children of the Forest that inhabit the Seven Kingdoms using advanced skills in makeup and prosthetics.

6. Pros, set decoration and armoury

Craftsmen bring to life everything from amazing dragon eggs to authentic rustic drinking horns. It all takes place in the Props and Set decoration studios where rich artistic detail and intricate layers add physical reality to the set. Learn how weapons are created including mediaeval crossbows, rusty blades and dragon glass and listen to tales of how they were brought to life.

7. Costumes

The award-winning costume department puts on show the intricately detailed designs for costumes used by the Game of Thrones characters. Pick your favourite character and recognise the iconic costumes they wore including Sansa’s wedding dress and Jon Snow’s furs.

The Game of Thrones Studio Tour

The Game of Thrones Studio Tour opened in the Linen Mill Studios in February 2022 as the first permanent officially licenced Game of Thrones tourist attraction in the world. Visitors take a self-guided tour through the original studios which includes 12 of the original sets used for filming.

When we heard of the studio tour opening we took the first opportunity to visit and visited the opening weekend in February 2022.

We’re huge fans of the hit HBO series, Game of Thrones. We’ve visited many of the Game of Thrones filming locations around Europe, you can check our guides to:

  • Game of Thrones Filming locations in Croatia
  • Game of Thrones Filming locations in Ireland

GAME OF THRONES SPOILERS AHEAD! As you might expect, parts of the tour described below contain massive spoilers for the show!

How to Get to the Game of Thrones Studio Tour

The Studio tour is located at the Linen Mills Studios outside Banbridge in Northern Ireland. Visitors must park at the designated car park at the Banbridge shopping outlet, The Boulevard, and take a shuttle bus to the actual studios. The Boulevard is around 90 minutes by car from Dublin or 30 minutes from Belfast.

After parking in the designated car park, there is a ticket office where you can wait for the bus. Once the bus arrives the staff will scan your ticket and it’s a 10 to15 minute bus ride to the studios.

Game of Thrones Studio Tour tip: there are a limited number of parking spaces for Blue Badge holders at the Linen Mills Studio. You must reserve in advance.

Game of Thrones Studio Tour

How much are tickets for the Studio Tour?

There are various ticket options available for the studio tour. Standard individual tickets are £39.50 per person with child tickets (5-15 years) costing £27.50. Students are £31.50 with a valid ID. Children 4 and under go free.

Family tickets (2 adults and 2 children or 1 adult and 3 children) are £115 and £109 respectively.

Game of Thrones Studio Tour tip: Ticket prices are expensive, however having visited the studios we found the entrance is well worth the price. The wealth of materials from the show and sets make it well worth the entrance price.

There are also ticket and transfer ticket packages that include return transport from Dublin and Belfast. Tickets for the tour must be purchased in advance from the studio tour website here .

How long is the Tour?

The studio tour will likely take at least 2 hours, including the shuttle bus from the Boulevard Shopping Outlet at Banbridge. We spent around 3 hours in total and could easily have spent another hour exploring all the exhibits. Based on this we’d budget around 3 to 4 hours to really enjoy everything the studio has to offer.

Game of Thrones Studio tour tip: The Shuttle bus from the parking lot takes around 15 minutes each way so you’ll need to factor this into your plans.

The Studio Tour

We’ve included a brief summary of each of the main areas of the studio tour.

Game of Thrones Studio tour tip: We highly recommend downloading the Game of Thrones Studio Tour app ( iOS / Android ) prior to your visit. You can store your ticket QR code on the app and the app has the free studio map and audio tour (for an additional cost)

On arrival at the studio, there is a cloakroom and a stall to pick up audio guides (these can be purchased in advance when ordering tickets) or ear protectors for young children (there are some loud parts of the tour).

Before starting the tour there is a cafe in the lobby for snacks. The tour starts after you leave the lobby.

Game of Thrones Studio Tour

1 | Theatre

The first stop in the studio is a short Game of Thrones and studio introductory video in the auditorium. After this visitors start the self-guided tour around the studio.

2 | Beyond the Wall

The first section of the tour after the auditorium is all things North of the Wall. Character costumes include the Free Folk (the wildlings), the Night King and his henchmen and the life-sized giant, Wun Wun.

It’s incredible to see the actual props and costumes used in the show and the level of detail is incredible.

Game of Thrones Studio Tour

Game of Thrones Studio Tour tip : Make sure to check out the prosthetics section of the tour where staff outline how the actor wore the giant suit. It even had its only air conditioning to counter the heat of the suit!

3 | Production and Set Design

The tour progresses to a section on production and set design. This was one of our favorite parts of the tour as it gave a behind the scenes look at the concept art and set designs for many of the shows iconic scenes. There are many original scale models of various sets, including Winterfell and the Great Sept of Baelor.

Game of Thrones Studio Tour

4 | Castle Black and The Night’s Watch

Next up is Castle Black and the home of the Night’s Watch. As the set designers envisioned, Castle Black was not a pleasant place. Characters on display include Jon Snow, Sam Tarley, and Melisandre (the priestess).

Game of Thrones Studio Tour

5 | Set Decoration and Props

The props section of the tour includes a myriad of props from the show. From small items such as weaponry and dragon eggs to larger-scale ships this section is packed with instantly recognisable props from the show

It’s worth looking at all the display cabinets in this section as there are some real gems hidden away, like the original “petrified” dragon eggs that were a wedding gift to Daenery’s Targaryen in season 1.

There’s also a fun interactive exhibit where visitors can design their own shield and crest.

Game of Thrones Studio Tour

Game of Thrones Studio Tour tip: For those who fancy a break there is a studio cafe located just before the Winterfell Crypts. The restaurant serves food throughout the day from breakfast until close

6 | The Crypts of Winterfell

Fans of the show will remember the crypts that lie under Winterfell castle. They feature in many scenes in the show and some of the most impressive tombs can be viewed on the studio tour.

Game of Thrones Studio Tour

7 | Winterfell

The Great Hall of Winterfell set is the only set at the studio that has remained in the same place since season one of Game of Thrones. As the location for so many iconic Game of Thrones scenes, it’s no surprise that it was our favorite set on the tour! It really feels like you are in the world of Game of Thrones when you enter the Winterfell set.

Game of Thrones Studio Tour

Many of the show’s best-known character costumes are lined around the hall walls, including Jon Snow, Arya Stark, Sansa Stark, Sandor Clegane (The Hound), Tyrian Lannister, and Brienne of Tarth to name just a few.

Visitors can easily spend over 30 minutes just looking at all the costumes in this set.

Game of Thrones Studio Tour

8 | Dragonstone

The feature set in the Dragonstone section is the Chamber of the Painted Table which has a detailed map of Westeros engraved on its surface. The characters depicted here include Tyrion Lannister and Olenna Tyrell.

Game of Thrones Studio Tour

9 | Costume Design

One of the most impressive aspects of Game of Thrones was the intricate and diverse range of costumes that the actors wore. From heavily armored outfits to sleek, flowing dresses, the costume design section follows the Dragonstone sets and shows visitors exactly what it took to design all of the costumes, including displays of many of the iconic outfits.

Game of Thrones Studio Tour

10 | The Hall of Faces

The Hall of Faces is one of the most recognisable sets from Game of Thrones. The designers of Game of Thrones had to make over 600 individual prosthetic faces for the Hall of Faces set.

There is a really cool interactive exhibit where you can appear on one of the pillars of the Hall of Faces.

Game of Thrones Studio Tour

11 | The Armory

The job of designing and making the vast array of weapons in Game of Thrones fell to master craftsman, Tommy Dunne. Tommy is a master armorer for movies and tv shows and worked previously on the movie Braveheart, Gladiator, and V for Vendetta.

Most of the signature weapons are on display, including Jon Snow’s sword, Longclaw, Ned Starks swords, Arya’s Needle and the dagger used to slay the Night King.

Game of Thrones Studio Tour

There is also a fun interactive game where visitors can “shoot” a bow and arrow to kill the Wights attacking Winterfell.

Game of Thrones Studio Tour

12 | Kings Landing

While the real-life city of Dubrovnik was used for Game of Thrones filming locations of Kings Landing, the studio was used for most of the internal shots. One of the most recognizable sets, the Map Courtyard is on display and featured in many important scenes.

Game of Thrones Studio Tour tip: The map was handpainted on tiles by two scenic painters, Dave Packard and Greg Winter, at the original set in the Titanic Studios.

Game of Thrones Studio Tour

13 | The Throne Room

The final stop on the tour is the remains of the Throne Room after Daenerys Targaryen destroyed Kings Landing. The centrepiece of the room is of course the Iron Throne. Although there was a debate at the end of the show whether Drogon destroyed the throne, the original is here for everyone to see.

Game of Thrones Studio Tour

The tour finishes in the studio gift shop which holds a really impressive selection of merchandise from the show.

Is the Game of Thrones Studio Tour Worth it?

So is the Game of Thrones Studio worth the trip? We say yes! Any fan of the Game of Thrones series will love the studio tour. The variety and number of sets, costumes, and props on display are amazing and it’s also cool to walk around the studio where many of the show’s iconic scenes were filmed. Although the entry cost is high, we guarantee that fans of the show will really enjoy the tour and we found it worth the cost.

Game of Thrones studio tour, Banbridge, County Down

Northern Ireland is Game of Thrones® territory – the primary filming location for one of the world's most popular television shows. And while you may come here to experience the landscapes that have been such an integral part of the story, there's a lot more to discover. Northern Ireland offers a range of thrilling experiences for fans of the show, from guided tours and medieval banquets to horseback adventures.

Live like a Northerner

Time to test your archery skills and find out if you’re as good as Arya (or as bad as Bran). Head to Winterfell Tours , in the courtyard of Castle Ward in County Down, an eccentric 18th-century mansion that is a collision of Gothic and classical architecture. You don’t have to be a Game of Thrones® fan to appreciate the jaw-dropping surroundings here (but it helps). As an archery expert shows you how to hit your target, you'll know you're in good hands. After all, this is the exact spot where Robb and Jon first showed Bran how to shoot a bow.

We did the Game of Thrones Archery Experience at Castle Ward...we had SO much fun dressing up and acting our part as archers! DANIELLE, TRIPADVISOR

Ready for action?

"There are five pups, one for each of the Stark children," said Jon Snow to Ned Stark. At Winterfell (aka Castle Ward) you can come face to face with these mythical creatures. OK, so they're not actually wolves – they're Northern Inuit dogs. Odin and Thor, aptly named after the Norse gods of war, have made Castle Ward their home. But don't worry, they know friend from foe, so they won't harm a surrogate member of the Stark clan!

You can go it alone here, too: just grab your Game of Thrones® map, don your cloak and choose your path for a cycling tour at Winterfell where you can explore key filming locations at Castle Ward including Audley’s Castle and Field, where Jaime Lannister was held as Robb’s prized captive.

game-of-thrones-experiences-audleys-castle-down

Audley's Castle, County Down

A feast fit for kings

Remember the feast the Starks held in honour of Robert Baratheon, before relationships disintegrated and heads began to roll – literally? You can re-live it at Winterfell Tours. The Castle Maester will greet you and your comrades at the north gate and escort you to the armoury. Here, you will don appropriate attire before being seated to break bread, sink your teeth into a roasted hog and wash it all down with a pitcher of Winterfell’s finest ale. And what’s a party without entertainment? Expect live music, re-enactments and plenty of banter.

There are loads of interesting stories and memorabilia hidden around for you to look at... JADE B, TRIPADVISOR ON THE CUAN

Castle Ward isn’t the only place to enjoy an epic meal. The Cuan in Strangford, County Down, provided accommodation for Game of Thrones® stars while filming was taking place at Castle Ward. And you can book your place at the king’s banquet – you never know, you might be bedding down in a Stark’s old room…

If you’re looking for something a little lighter, then the Game of Thrones® Afternoon Tea at Ballygally Castle Hotel in County Antrim is the perfect midday delight. Munch on scrumptious Jon Snow Cakes, Baratheon bread and even mini Dragon’s eggs!

Get a taste of Westeros:

game-of-thrones-experiences-dark-hedges-antrim-1

The Kingsroad, Game of Thrones® at The Dark Hedges, County Antrim

All that glistens

As the late Tywin Lannister rightly observed: “Any man who must say, I am the king, is no true king.” But a good crown? Now that speaks for itself.

Take a trip to The Steensons , where the resident goldsmiths are the master craftsmen behind the crowns worn by the late King Joffrey and his bride Margaery. The Steensons also created several other fantastical pieces, such as the formidable Lannister lion pendants and Daenerys' dragon brooches. Admire the stunning pieces at their Glenarm or Belfast premises and check out the Game of Thrones®-inspired range from these master jewellers.

The haunted forest

Touring Game of Thrones® territory

Take a guided coach tour with the chauffeurs who ferried the Game of Thrones actors to their stunning Northern Ireland filming locations. You'll get chills as you pass by Castle Black and travel along the Kingsroad, before exploring tiny Ballintoy Harbour where Theon landed on his return to the Iron Islands.

You could try the Game of Thrones ® /Giant’s Causeway double whammy day trip. Or if you’re feeling REALLY adventurous, why not hire a car or a campervan and see all the stunning locations in your own time.

If you are planning on visiting Northern Ireland then this tour is a must for all ages. PETER K, TRIPADVISOR ON THE STONES AND THRONES TOUR

To see original features, costumes and props and get loads of behind the scenes knowledge, The Game of Thrones Studio Tour  is sure to delight passionate fans and TV buffs alike.

For the ultimate thrill, try a helicopter tour of key filming locations and the epic Causeway Coastal Route. Nothing quite beats this dragon's eye view.

Take a tour:

Ballintoy Harbour, County Antrim

Ballintoy Harbour, County Antrim

The Game of Thrones ®  sea safari is another great way to make your watery way around Westeros, taking in Ballintoy Harbour and Murlough Bay, both in County Antrim. As you travel around the coastline, the skipper will even show you the cliffs that were filmed as backdrops in the series. Or try the Narrow Sea boat voyage on Strangford Lough. Your skipper will takes you to the "Bay of Seals", where you may even spot some dolphins following your boat – the lough is a Marine Conservation Zone.

Where do you want to go?

Do you feel like tasting wild Atlantic sea spray on your lips? Strolling through vibrant city streets? Exploring ancient ruins? Right this way…
