Though Generations bills itself as a gourmet all-inclusive, the food is fairly mediocre, portions are small, and restaurant menus are limited. Couples traveling alone might find this place overrun with kids, but parents can leave tots with the hotel’s designated nannies and spend some time next door at the adult-only El Dorado Royale property.

Take a few seconds to imagine a relaxing beach vacation. Picture a tranquil setting, where you can hear the waves break upon the shore. Have an image in mind? Now forget it: Generations RIviera Maya by Karisma is not that place. Upbeat music fills the air, water aerobics take up the center of the pool, a rowdy beach volleyball game is in full swing, and an endless amount of children run amok. To say Generations is family-friendly would be an understatement. Though couples and singles may find it a bit wild, for many families Generations offers the best of both worlds -- a fun beach vacation with enough entertainment for the kids, and just a bit of added romance for parents. In fact, many guests do take advantage of Generations’ affiliation with the adult-only El Dorado resorts next door. Parents can drop their kids at Eko Kids Club and head off to El Dorado for a sunset dinner. When they return, there will be plenty of cake pops and cupcakes waiting for them at the dessert table. 

Everything at the hotel is massive. The lobby is set with floor-to-ceiling wood columns surrounded by huge white cushions. Large tear-drop fixtures hang from the ceiling. Grounds are landscaped with the prerequisite palm trees and ocean views. 

Midway between Cancun and Playa del Carmen 

About halfway between Cancun and Playa del Carmen , Generations Riviera Maya by Karisma is actually closer to the tiny town of Puerto Morelos than either of the two tourist hubs. There isn’t much to do or see in the immediate area surrounding the hotel, and most guests come to enjoy the property rather than the local culture. The hotel is about a 25-minute drive from Cancun Airport. Parking at Generations is free, or there's a shuttle from the hotel that's included in some packages. 

Large suites, some with private pools 

Generations Riviera Maya by Karisma deems itself an “all-suite” all-inclusive, and when it comes to rooms, the hotel hits the nail on the head in every way. The smallest standard room (the Ocean Front Luxury Jacuzzi Suite) is a true suite, with 722 square feet of space, and a separate living room and bedroom area. Each room is about the same size and is divided by a sliding wall, allowing guests to choose the amount of privacy between each space. Living rooms are furnished with a sectional chaise sofa, a small coffee table, and a flat-screen TV and BlueRay player. The bedroom has either one king- or two queen-size beds, along with a small table and chair set, and another flat-screen TV. There is also a desk-like structure in the bedroom, but oddly, it doesn’t have a desk chair. Walls are classic hotel cream, with a marigold accent wall, and chocolate colored furniture. Another nice extra is minibars that are stocked with free drinks and snacks. Bathrooms are huge, and designed with families in mind. There are two sinks, plenty of storage space, separate showers and whirlpool tubs, and separate water closets. Several people can use the bathroom at once without invading each other’s’ privacy. Bathrooms are finished in gray stone and subway tiles, with pendant lighting and chrome fixtures. 

Generations also has larger suites with full kitchen, living, and dining areas. Guests can combine multiple units to create multi-bedroom apartments. Anyone traveling with small children should definitely request their room to be outfitted with “baby amenities.” Before arrival, the hotel can furnish guest rooms with age-appropriate necessities like cribs, changing tables, and strollers. There are step stools for toddlers, bottle warmers for newborns, and baby monitors so parents can keep an ear out for the little ones while they relax on the balcony. The hotel even provides child-size robes and slippers, sweet little stuffed animals, and puzzles and games upon request. 

Some rooms are Swim-Up or Infinity Suites because they have direct, private access from the guest room to a pool. Swim-Up Suites are on the ground floor, and guests can literally swim from their balcony into the hotel’s main pool (you’ll immediately win parent of the year with this one). The only pitfall to this option is its lack of privacy. Other hotel guests can easily swim past these rooms at any point during the day or night, so they may not always be the quietest. Infinity Suites, located on the upper floors, have direct, private access from the balcony into an upper-level infinity pool. These pools are smaller and quieter than the main pool, but lack the main pool’s services such as a swim-up bar or pool attendants.  

The resort calls itself an “all-suite, all-butler” hotel, but those unfamiliar with typical resort butler service should banish any images of a tuxedo-clad gentleman who follows guests around with a silver platter. Instead, the butler is essentially a personal concierge shared by clusters of neighboring guest rooms, who is typically happy to accommodate guests’ requests -- from helping unpack suitcases to arranging off-site excursions to acquiring restaurant reservations.

The greatest feature at Generations has to be its massive pool. Spanning the entire length of the hotel, the pool is a mega-sized water wonderland for both adults and kids. The oasis of blue mosaic tile is home to swim-up bar, has multiple ledges for sun loungers, and sports its own volleyball net. Mere steps from the pool (yes, actually steps) is the hotel’s beach. It’s certainly the nicest stretch of sand in the area, but the water tends to be a bit rocky and the sandbag breakers are unsightly. The beach is equipped with plenty of lounge chairs, there’s a lifeguard on duty during the day, and there’s a small playground for kids to climb on.  

There are several on-site restaurants, including the classic all-inclusive buffet, Mediterranean and Asian a la carte options, and a wine bar. The buffet -- which successfully resembles a neighborhood market, with its brick and wood finishes, picnic tables, and chalkboard signs -- is a lively spot with endless options. However, all of the other restaurants feel like the same, somewhat characterless room -- same layout, same decor, same tables and chairs, just with a different color scheme. The food is also somewhat disappointing for a “gourmet all-inclusive.” Most meals are average in quality and taste, but restaurant offerings are limited and portions are small. 

The Eko Kids Club is exceptional. Kids ages four to 12 can attend supervised activities from morning until night. The room is painted in bright colors with creative murals adorning the walls. There’s a large ball pit, bean bag chairs, a Lego station, and tables for arts and crafts. Eko tries to teach kids about environmentally-friendly practices by way of organized games and art projects. Kids under the age of four can join the fun, but require parent supervision. Family evening entertainment includes movies by the pool and nightly performances of fire dancers and dance shows. There are also babysitters for hire if parents want take advantage of the adult-only restaurants and pools next door . Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.

Part of the Rivera Maya and Karisma Hotels & Resorts’ many all-inclusive resorts stretched across this popular destination in Mexico, Generations doesn’t quite look like the other properties. Rather than sprawling resorts with bungalow-style accommodations, Generations Riviera Maya rooms are in a towering complex that snuggles right up to its pool and beach. While the initial view may bring doubt, the resort’s 144 suites are spacious and all feature oceanfront views.

Families can enjoy suites with separate living and sleeping areas, kitchenettes and room for up to 12. Babies are especially welcomed at this resort, with tons of amenities just for infants on hand, including baby food, strollers, changing tables and more. Young kids will enjoy the children’s programming, including a Little Chefs program. Families with teens, however, may find there isn’t programming or enough space for teens to truly enjoy the resort.

Generations is an all-suite property with 144 accommodations. Rooms are outfitted with Jacuzzi tubs, DVD players, 42-inch LCD TVs, iPod docking systems and balconies or terraces. Mini-bars are fully stocked with snacks and drinks, which are included with the stay.

Oceanfront Luxury Suites These suites with views of the ocean are more than 700 square feet in size with a king and double bed or two double beds, as well as a sofa bed, to sleep up to seven in one room. These are the resort's most standard rooms. The rooms offer sliding dividing doors to separate the king or two double beds from another double bed and sofa bed, with a second TV.

Oceanfront One-Bedroom Suites These ocean-facing rooms have a master bedroom with a king bed, as well as a living room with a sleeper sofa to sleep up to five. The living room has a fully equipped kitchen and dining table for six. The suites located on the ground floor are swim-up suites with direct access to the main pool. There are also suites with two double beds instead of a king, featuring an infinity pool terrace overlooking the ocean. The suites are more than 1,200 square feet in size.

Oceanfront Two-Bedroom Suite At over 2,000 square feet, two-bedroom suites combine a one-bedroom suite with a luxury suite, providing either two king bedrooms or a king bed and two double beds with a sleeper sofa. They can accommodate up to eight people and also face the ocean. Swim-up and Infinity versions of these suites are also available.

Oceanfront Three-Bedroom Suite These suites combine a one-bedroom suite, a luxury suite and a slightly larger family junior suite into more than 2,700 square feet of space. Up to seven adults and five children or six adults and seven children can sleep in this suite. Swim-up and Infinity options of these suites are also available.

The resort can be busy from weddings, but the Butlers (Nick, Imelda, Luiz and Avril) helped with reservations and transportation. Wilfredo and Victor were awesome preparing dinner in our room and Baldo and Cynthia at Haab restaurant helped us have one of the best meals we have had at a Karisma resort (which is saying a lot!) Jose at the Italian restaurant and lunch with Israel at the pizza restaurant were also superb. Even Abisai the bellman on our departure made us feel so welcomed. Besides the location directly across from the pool being too busy and the wedding parties dominating the pool, there were no complaints. A good place for multigenerational travel

My wife and I just returned from our third consecutive yearly trip to Generations. First of all-the entire El Dorado property is spectacular. We are Exotic members so we don’t have any comparison to other properties. We were there for 7 days. New to us this year was the use of the WhatsApp to communicate with our butlers. This is a very convenient feature. I’ll begin with highlighting our wonderful butler team. Imelda, Abril, Luiz and Nick were FANTASTIC. They are very energetic and attended to us exceptionally well. While being very professional, they are also very fun. Overall they have been our favorite butler “team” that we have ever had. We tried to eat across the resort. Our favorite is always Rincon Mexican. We ate here two nights. We ate at Kampaii 2 times as well. Umberto was the best waiter. Because it’s the spot for breakfast, Market Cafe probably doesn’t get many write ups. We love the breakfast. Liz Beth is the nicest hostess. She also works at Palms over lunch. She always greeted us warmly and remembered us. Jordan Borrego Is the best and absolutely nicest omelette maker ever! We spent most of our “bar time” at Sling at night and Gaviotas during the day. Ruben, at Sling, is the best, hardest working bartender I’ve ever met. Juan at Gaviotas was great too. We visited the Spa at Generations and Casitas. Our therapists Gabriella,Luz, Rosaura, and Gabrielle were fantastic. While we were there we were able to meet many wonderful people from across the globe. We saw multiple weddings everyday. The staff at the resort was unbelievable in setting up all the weddings. I’m sure every bride and groom felt special. Overall we continue to give “5-Stars” to El Dorado for the staff and the experience. There are so many great people I wish I could remember their names and recognize them all. We’ve never had anything but exceptional service in all the years that we’ve been going to the Karisma Resorts.

Family Activities

Eko Kids Club Children, ages 4 to 12, have an indoor play space dedicated to them with a craft station, gaming consoles, movie area and reading library. The supervised club is open daily, with some activities taking place outside on the beach or at the pool. The Eko Little Chefs program gets kids cooking and working with the real chefs of the resort.

Baby Beach Lounge Parents wanting to keep little ones shaded near the ocean can enjoy this beach lounge, complete with sand toys and a slide for kids.

Beach and Pool With its oceanfront location, families can elect to enjoy the pool or the adjacent beach, with butlers available to assist with toys, umbrellas and dining. Snorkeling equipment is available on the beach.

Family Dining

All meals are included in this all-inclusive resort, which calls itself a "Gourmet Inclusive" because it provides multiple a la carte gourmet cuisine in its restaurants, as opposed to buffets and lines. Twenty-four hour room service is also included.

Blend This coffee and tea spot is open throughout the day for beverages, including fresh smoothies. Pastries and baked goods are also featured. Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Chef Market Grand Café & Deck This international gourmet restaurant is open all day, from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., providing a casual environment with ocean views. Like more traditional restaurants at home, daily a la carte choices are displayed on blackboards.

Habb Mediterranean Restaurant & Lounge Open for dinners only, this Mediterranean-inspired seafood restaurant features ocean views and fresh catches. Risotto, flatbreads and pastas are also heavily featured. Open from 5:30 to 10 p.m. nightly.

Jade Pan Asian Cuisine For a combination of Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Korean dishes, this intimate dinner-only restaurant is the place to go. Open from 5:30 to 10 p.m. nightly, Asian favorites and exotic dishes are featured.

Palms Gourmet Terrace For traditional Mexican cuisine, this casual outdoor terrace is open daily for lunch. Caribbean specialties are combined with beach life, music and table games in this popular daytime hangout. The Terrace is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Wine Kitchen Restaurant & Tasting Room Make this restaurant one of your date spots as you enjoy a dinner paired with various wines. This dinner spot requires a casual, yet elegant dress code as various cuisines from wine regions are created to pair with wines from those regions of the world. Open from 6 to 10 p.m.

Getting Around The resort can arrange transportation to Playa del Carmen and Cancun at additional fees. Cancun is 35 to 40 minutes north of the resort, while Playa del Carmen is just 15 minutes away. The resort can also arrange excursions to local attractions, such as the Tulum Mayan ruins.

For Mom and Dad The resort's Naay Spa is a full-service spa with fitness center, treatment rooms and a salon. Treatments include manicures, pedicures, facials, body wraps, scrubs and massages, including special chocolate therapies.

The property is connected to Karisma's adult-only El Dorado Casitas Royale and El Dorado Royale resorts, and adults 18 and older from Generations are allowed to access the facilities and restaurants while the kids are in Generations' Eko Kids Club or with a babysitter.

Generations Riviera Maya is an all-suite, all-inclusive resort that sits about halfway between Playa del Carmen and Cancun  on the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The beachfront resort offers 162 suites, all with large balconies or terraces. Some larger suites are equipped with swim-up balconies that connect to the infinity pool. Guests are complimentary of the spacious accommodations and also praise the customer service and variety of food found at the on-site restaurants. Generations Riviera Maya boasts five dining spots that serve Mexican, Caribbean, Indian, Asian and international cuisine, as well as several bars – one of which is a swim-up bar. The resort welcomes children, and the property offers supervised games and enrichment activities for guests ages 4 to 12. Both kids and adults will enjoy the resort's infinity pool that stretches along the length of the property, as well as the Jacuzzis available in every suite. Although guests heap praise on the resort's pools and restaurants, some lament the property's small, rocky beach. Next to the resort are two of Karisma's other Riviera Maya properties, El Dorado Casitas Royale and El Dorado Royale , and guests ages 18 and older can use the facilities at both of these locations.

Generations: The Perfect Luxury Family Resort in Riviera Maya

Did you go on family beach vacations as a kid? I did. We went to the Oregon coast every year and stayed in a resort right on the sandy beach. It’s a memory I’ll always cherish.

During a recent beach vacation to the El Dorado Royale Resorts in Riviera Maya, we were introduced to a new way to experience family vacations and I wanted to pass this information along to those of you who are looking for the perfect luxury family resort in Riviera Maya. It’s called Generations Resort and it will blow your mind.

Generations Resort is located along a long swath of beachfront property south of Puerto Morelos, near the adults-only El Dorado Royale and couples-only El Dorado Casitas Royale . Its close proximity to these other resorts makes it a prime location, because amenities and restaurants are shared among all three, but that’s not even close to all it has to offer.

The resort is a relatively new addition to the Karisma family of resorts. It was envisioned to be Mexico’s premiere all suite, all butler, all gourmet inclusive resort, and it more than lives up to that standard. You read it right – every room is a suite, complete with a minimum configuration of a large bathroom, sitting area with couch that can be made into a bed, and spacious bedroom with King-size bed. Every suite comes with its very own butler.

With a family to keep track of, getting around a large resort without losing someone is a challenge, so Generations was built with a much smaller footprint. The large, main pool extends across the entire front side of the resort and is large enough not to feel crowded. Each and every room has either a swim-up access to the main pool, or access to a pool that can be reached from the suite’s balcony.

When it comes to dining, you don’t have to go very far. All of the four a la carte restaurants are located in one building, on different floors. Each restaurant has a 180-degree view of the Caribbean Sea, and each has its own style and decor to make it feel like you’re dining around the world. If you’re there with extended family, you can all be seated together at larger tables.

No matter what you might need, nothing is too much to ask of your private butler. They can stock the mini-fridge with beverages at your request, even prior to your arrival. They can attend to just about any need you may have, which is intended to take the stress off and enable you to fully relax instead of worrying about the details. It’s really the perfect luxury family resort in Riviera Maya

Of course, being a family resort, Generations doesn’t cater to everyone, and you might find the need for a different type of resort, especially if you’re having your wedding on the property. That’s another unique and convenient aspect of three Karisma resorts being located right next to each other.
