David Bowie performing at Roker Park, Sunderland on 23rd June 1987 in his Glass Spider Tour Fans enjoying the concert

SET LIST: Purple Haze (cover), Up the Hill Backwards, Glass Spider, Up the Hill Backwards (reprise), Day-in-Day-Out, Bang Bang (cover), Absolute Beginners, Loving the Alien, China Girl, Fashion, Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), All the Madmen, Never Let Me Down, Big Brother, Chant of the Ever Circling Skeletal Family, ‘87 and Cry, Heroes, Time Will Crawl, Beat Your Drum, Sons of the Silent Age, Dancing with the Big Boys, Zeroes, Let’s Dance, Fame. Encore : Blue Jean, Modern Love

A stringed-version of the hook from Jimi Hendrix’s Purple Haze faded and the band broke into the underrated “Up the Hill Backwards”, then, as his evocative vocals rang out across the northeastern crowd, he descended to the sage in a huge Glass Spider, and the song of the same name took over, 36,000 people went wild.

It was all going so well, but as “Day-in-Day Out” came to a crescendo, David Bowie cried out perhaps the most infamous words ever uttered at Roker Park, enough to sully the name of one of the greatest cultural icons of the twentieth century in the fair city of Sunderland for decades to come...

Thank you, good evening, Newcastle!

You surely already know about this most insensitive of faux pars . Even if - like 5-year-old me - you weren’t amongst the crowd, it’s a story we’ve all been told growing up; an anecdote that’s still being handed down to new generations as they encounter Bowie’s music for the first time. I’ve just told my 11-year-old (whose favourite album of all time is 2016’s wonderfully powerful Black Star ); he sucked the air through his teeth and shuck his head...

The man himself was, at this stage in his already long career, not hiding behind an elaborate persona - he was just plain Dave, and embarking on a gigantic 100-date global tour accompanied by the largest touring set in the history of live music to that date. Such was the complexity of the rig, one stadium worker had died and another had been injured during the concerts in Florence and Milan earlier in the month.

Minor royalty in the form of the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, was in attendance at our old ground to watch the Thin White Duke perform, but her then husband clearly wasn’t willing (or should I say able?) to join her and work up a sweat with the hoi polloi. Bowie’s plane was delayed in London and for a while it looked like he might not make it, but the crowd were none-the-wiser and the warm-up acts of Big Country and Screaming Blue Messiahs went down well.

Bowie’s set list, comprised of some of his more obscure ‘80s tracks interspersed with a few absolute classics like “Heroes” and “Let’s Dance”, obscure dancing and spectacular staging left the crowd cold at times and, as the English summer reverted to type and the rain began to pour, Bowie seemed to lose enthusiasm for the gig. The encore was cut short by two songs (a cover of “I Wanna Be Your Dog” with “Modern Love” to finish), and he headed off for the Scandinavian leg of mammoth tour. The pitch was left in a hell of a state, and some local people are still complaining about the noise 34 years later.

We’re fortunate to have access to the official photos from the concert from the Getty archive, so maybe you can spot yourself (or your parents, or even your grandparents) in the crowd?

The Screaming Blue Messiahs were also guests and I don’t recall any rain at all on the day.

I recall Bowie actually being late for the gig, I think it was nearly an hour late and yes it rained, I also really enjoyed Big Country.

It was ludicrously wet at the end. We had to wait over an hour for a bus back to the toon, and it was torrential at that point. I think I found the rain marginally more entertaining than his set that day though. Wish I’d seen the Serious Moonlight tour instead.

great memories…thank you for posting. I’d been to the Wembley show on the previous Saturday but after only getting a halfway line view decided to go to Sunderland as well where I got a much better view near the front. Big Country were great at both gigs. Apparently Bowie was upset with the curfew as the lighting rigs only worked to maximum effect in the dark and even with a slighly late start most of this gig was in daylight. He flew in late, to Newcastle airport, hence the introduction slip-up, which most near me found quite funny. This was the same set list as Wembley, though he dropped “Time” from the encore at Sunderland because the wind got up, making standing on top of the rig even more precarious, and the wind was just a sign of the rain to come which lashed down at the close. The setlist was changed shortly after to drop the unpopular “Never let me down” tracks and to add some standards like Rebel Rebel.and Jean Genie. Having seen Serious Moonlight at Milton Keynes this new post-liveaid show did not have the desired impact, too much going on upon the stage at once, and new songs were weak. However, the fantastic video/dvd of the Sydney Austrailia shows (indoors with full lighting) later in the tour shows the potential. Ironically, I saw another overblown show in Sunderland recently, with absailing, cranes, strange creatures, obscure dancers, songs as production numbers, diamond screens, and a full stage that was difficult to follow….Take That. Bowie’s ideas and innovation were ahead of their time, and now years later there is better technology to execute them.

I lived five minutes walk from Roker Park and being a massive Peter Frampton fan went to this gig to see him. The weather was cloudy and armed with some fruit and snacks I stood fairly close to the front, pretty much bang in the middle. If I recall about 4PM the truly dreadful Screaming Blue Messiahs came on. I remember how poor they went down – at the end of each song there was very little cheering – around me it was more of a groan! Then on came Big Country which were great. On one song they had to stop as there was some major unwanted droning sound. Stuart Adamson said something like “now that’s what you call a technical malfunction!” It was broad daylight when Bowie dressed in a green boiler suit climbed up the back of the set pretending to be one of the lighting crew. We were all cheering and jeering and he showed no emotion as he attempted to maintain his anonymity – to no avail – his hairstyle gave him away for starters!

As for the concert, I knew hardly any of the songs but I still enjoyed it. Frampton had major technical problems. Time after time his guitar was swapped by his tech – only for it to have issues. In fact, when Bowie introduced him he said “And, on half a guitar this evening – Peter Framton). He got the loudest cheer of all the band introductions.

Thanks to it being overcast and the weather closing in the last few songs did show off the tremendous set with its huge spide atop the stage. Living so close by I had seen it taking shape as it towered over the Roker End of the ground. At the end it did pour with rain, but not earlier when there was definitely none.

This was my first gig as a naive teen. In my mind as a now 40-something, it was the best gig ever. Reality is, your account sums up the actual event as not one of Bowie’s best but his genius lives on.

David Bowie thrills 36,000 fans at Roker Park, Sunderland, in 1987

JS93628162 copy

Giant rock and pop gigs at the region’s football stadiums are today a regular fixture on the North East entertainment calendar.

The whole thing kicked off in 1982 when the Rolling Stones played at Newcastle United’s St James’ Park.

Five years later, Sunderland got in on the act when David Bowie announced a date at the club’s old ground, Roker Park.

As American pop diva Beyonce steps out at the Stadium of Light, we recall the night Bowie rocked out back on Tuesday, June 23, 1987.

Earlier this year, in January, music fans in the North East and around the globe were shocked at news of the 69-year-old rock superstar’s death.

Here in the region, Bowie had performed landmark shows at Newcastle City Hall in 1972 and 1973, returning for a trio of celebrated gigs at the same venue in June 1978,

JS93628169 copy

Later he would grace Newcastle Mayfair in 1991, Newcastle Riverside in 1997, and he was the first major artist to appear at Newcastle Arena in 1995.

But it was the Roker Park show in 1987 which attracted his biggest North East crowd.

More than 36,000 fans descended for the show on a day which began with sunshine, but ended with torrential rain.

Bowie, in fact, might have performed at St James’ Park had a Chronicle story from March 1983 come to fruition. We reported how promoter Harvey Goldsmith was considering promoting a summer show at the Toon’s home following the success of the Stones a year earlier – but the plan was scrapped.

It wasn’t until April 1987 that we announced Bowie would be performing in the region.

The 40-year-old star star – resident in Geneva, Switzerland at the time – would appear at Roker Park, Sunderland, on his 100-city worldwide Glass Spider tour.

Ticket sales were brisk, and with a 40,000 crowd expected, we told how special car and coach parks would be set up, and late night train services extended.

The support acts were confirmed as Big Country and the Screaming Blue Messiahs.

But, come the big day, the show was not without its problems.

With Bowie’s Boeing 747 aircraft temporarily grounded in London, the majority of the 36,000 fans in the ground “were blissfully unaware of the last-minute delays”.

As for the show, our report continued: “Bowie descended from the arms of a giant glass spider looking like an ageing teddy boy.

JS93628166 copy

“He took on the role of a circus impresario in charge of a multi-national band and team of wild dancers.

“But the significance of a great deal of the show was lost on much of the crowd…”

The start of the show also saw the singer address the crowd in a now notorious gaffe when he declared: “Good evening, Newcastle.” Oops!

If the stage show was undoubtedly stunning, our reviewer reckoned “the music seemed to leave the fans wanting”.

Bowie had chosen to play a sizeable chunk of new and unfamiliar material, but “when the audience was treated to some of the star’s hits – Heroes, Fame, Absolute Beginners and China Girl – they went down a storm.”

Towards the end of the show, the superstar again put his foot in it, announcing: “You didn’t let it rain. It’s so nice not to play in the rain”.

Cue a downpour which soaked the large outdoor crowd.

Nevertheless, the show came to a memorable climax when Bowie played Let’s Dance and Modern Love.

Our review concluded: “The crowds danced and sang with gusto – and I got an impression of what a great night it could have been.” And with that, David Bowie was gone, leaving behind a churned-up football pitch, thousands of discarded beer bottles, complaints about volume levels, but a host of memories for fans at the show (yours truly among them).

He may not have played Ziggy Stardust, but we still loved him…

Rock superstar David Bowie's North East shows as biopic Stardust premiers

As the David Bowie biopic Stardust has its premiere, we recall how the superstar graced venues across the region from Newcastle City Hall to Roker Park

The recent biopics focusing on the colourful lives of rock superstars Freddie Mercury (Bohemian Rhapsody) and Elton John (Rocketman) have both attracted critical acclaim and commercial success.

But it seems that a new film examining the early career of another rock titan, David Bowie, is receiving a distinctly lukewarm initial reaction.

Stardust, starring Johnny Flynn, premiered this week at the Raindance Film Festival in London. The movie recalls the star's infamous 1971 tour of the United States and the creation of his Ziggy Stardust persona.

But NME reports how many fans have given Stardust the thumbs-down on social media and quotes one, Sam Shins, declaring on Twitter: "Nope. Just no. You can’t have an accent that bad, a film that looks like an American soap opera and you certainly can’t have a Bowie film without his music. Probs shouldn’t have bothered guys."

David Bowie 's death from cancer in 2016 at the age of 69 left music fans around the world in mourning.

But many of us will be thankful that we were able to see the unique talent performing in concert here in the North East when he was at the peak of his powers.

As Ziggy Stardust, Bowie played landmark gigs at Newcastle City Hall in 1972 and 1973, returning for a trio of celebrated shows at the same venue in June 1978.

Later he would grace Newcastle Mayfair in 1991, Newcastle Riverside in 1997, and he was the first major artist to appear at the newly-opened Newcastle Arena in 1995.

But it was his concert at Roker Park, the then home of Sunderland FC, on June 23, 1987 which attracted his biggest ever North East crowd.

More than 36,000 fans descended for the show on a day which began with sunshine, but ended with torrential rain.

Bowie, in fact, might have performed at Newcastle United 's St James’ Park had a Chronicle story from March 1983 come to fruition.

We reported how promoter Harvey Goldsmith was considering promoting a summer show at the stadium following the success of the Rolling Stones concert a year earlier - but the plan was scrapped.

It wasn’t until April 1987 that the Chronicle reported Bowie would be returning to the region for the first time in nearly a decade.

It would be the first, but not last, major rock show hosted by Sunderland football club.

Ticket sales were brisk, and with a 40,000 crowd expected, we told how special car and coach parks would be set up, and late night train services extended. The support acts were confirmed as Big Country and the Screaming Blue Messiahs.

I have only been here a couple of times, but I have enjoyed it. The only problem is that you have to pay to get in and as I like to bar hop, I am not a huge fan of this. There is always a good number of people there making for a good atmosphere. The choice of music is great, you have a lot of music from now and the past, so a good variety for everyone. It is also good for IDing people, so you do not end up surrounded by school children. Sadly, I cannot comment on the drinks as I tend to go here late on in the night and cannot remember the prices by that point.

The Glass Spider is Sunderland's Premier Night Spot. Grey Goose, Sky, Below 42, Jack Daniels Single Barrel and some crackin Cocktails on offer. 3 Bars, 1 dance room and a VIP lounge to get into. Fridays is BoogieLand which is Sunderland busiest Bar to go to playing all the Boogie classics including funky 70's and 80's. Free Entry before 2am. Open until 5am in the morning which is great if you are starting late... Saturdays is Super Saturday with Marc Rowell on the Decks who also plays for Fierce Angel. Start on the right foot with an entrance on Red Carpet, Funky House, Sexy Sax and Percussions really adds value to the night. Stilt walkers, fire eaters are a must see! Cocktails are £2.50 all night which is awesome and drinks prices are reasonable. If your celebrating Christian Audigier Wine and Champagne has the bling factor. Prices start at £19.95. If you want something more high end Louis Roederer Cristal Vintage might be more you but the price tag is £295

This is a really good bar. Split over two floors with a dancefloor and DJ downstairs and roof terrace upstairs. The glass spider is open till 4am and therefore gets very busy later on in the night as a good alternative to clubbing. Always a popular bar and with a decent crowd it is one of the best bars in Sunderland. Prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is good. Well worth a visit.

Moscow guide&photo! Feel Putin vibes and explore the enigmatic Russian soul through history ...

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.
