1972 Airstream Safari Land Yacht.  Self-contained with fresh water tank but we have only used it in full hook up RV parks.  Very clean inside and out. Tires about year and a half old with approx 2500 miles.  Everything works except the roof fan vent in the front, oven and one night light.  We did a minor remodel by taking out the shower, front couch, and separate single sleep beds.  Replaced front couch with two reclining chairs.  Replaced two singles beds with one full size futon which can be used as a bed or a couch.  New flooring.  All appliances are original with the addition of a microwave.  Kitchen stove has four burners. One small crack in formica by the kitchen sink. All cabinet doors are original and function properly.  Lots of storage. Curtains are original and have been cleaned. Powered lift on tongue of trailer.  New valves on original propane tanks.  Original propane switching valve in place and works great.  New sewer hose.  Battery about a year old.  The axles have been aligned and it is easy to pull.  Towed it with a half-ton GMC Yukon.  The interior lights work and the roof air conditioner works great. Heat is a ducted gas furnace that heats the trailer very quickly.  Refrigerator gets very cold on 110v and gas. There is a crease across the rear just above the clearance lights but no leaks anywhere in the trailer.  Windows all function properly with no leaks. Comes with the reclining chairs and the equalizer hitch. Just returned from NM, no issues with water, sewer, or electrical systems.  Good looking classic, get lots of looks going down the road. Also have several original parts, i.e. bathroom door with mirror, bunk bed frame, sliding bed frame, etc.

2008 Airstream Safari Sport

2008 Airstream Safari Sport

Lawrence, Kansas

This is a 2008 Airstream Safari Sport. It is actually 16 8", as listed on the Airstream website. Details about all the trailer specs can be found here: :// /files/library/ I bought the trailer in the winter of 2009, and am now selling it because I am getting married and need to get a bigger trailer. It has been a great little trailer, and pulls like a dream. I've used it while working around the country, so it has a little wear and tear, but overall it's in good shape. If you've never owned an Airstream, you're in for a treat! They pull so much better than the large, square fiberglass trailers, and you hardly known they're behind you. I've pulled mine with a GMC Yukon, and had no trouble at all. The trailer weighs 3500 pounds, making it very light and something which almost any truck or SUV can pull. I have a $700+ hitch system which comes with the trailer (I paid over $700 for it in 2010.) It is a straight-line Reese hitch which is almost identical to this one :// /reese-trailer-hitches/reese-strait-line-3726938.html Detailed List of "Problems" and "Repairs." (just to make sure you know everything that's been done to the trailer.) 1.There was a 10 inch dent in the front left corner of the trailer where it contacted the corner of a building when I was moving it, but I had my dad (who does painless dent repair on cars--a paint free way of removing dents) spend 15 minutes on it and he was able to make it look relatively flat. It's not very noticeable now. and it doesn't leak or cause any problems-only cosmetic. 2.The sewage outlet was replaced. I hit a tire while cruising down the interstate, which ripped off the sewer pipe. It cost me upwards of $1,500, but they replaced anything that was even slightly broken (plastic pipers and the sewage tank), making it as good as new (maybe better since the parts are newer than when the trailer was made back in 2008!) 3.Replaced the hot water tank in 2010. It works perfectly now (that cost about $400.) 4.Replaced the air conditioning unit in summer of 2011. (I learned the hard way that you should never use anything other than a full 30-watt hookup. Anything slower will slowly destroy the air conditioner. This replacement air conditioner cost about $1000. It works perfectly, giving ice cold air--and it's never been used on anything less than 30 watt power since then!) 5.Replaced the battery with a $100 heavy duty battery, giving power when the trailer is on the road. Airstreams are simply the best travel trailers on the road, and as long as you take care of it, this trailer will last for many decades longer. It's amazing how well they pull, and how easy they are to use and maintain. You will love this little trailer! $23,500.00

Make AIRSTREAM

Model Airstream

2002 Airstream Airstream , Up for sale is my 2002 Safari 27 Airstream. Its only barely been used for probably 2 months total since it was made! I purchased it last summer (2014), and havent used it more than 3 weeks or so. So, this trailers interior is in great shape on the interior, and exhibits normal wear and tear for a 2002 on the exterior. Everything works perfectly (lights, range and oven, fridge, water heater, etc.) I put memory foam on top of the mattress of the full size bed in the trailer, and it is very comfortable for sleeping 2 adults. Also, there is the pull-out couch which turns into another bed for 2 more adults (never used it.) The exterior has a few dents and scratches, but is in good shape (nothing unusual, just the normal wear and tear.) A few areas of corrosion, but just the normal amount for a 2002 trailer. The awning works fine as well. The trailer pulls perfectly, and in my short GMC Yukon SUV, it is an easy trailer to pull. The nice thing about Safaris are that theyre so light weight (the trailer weighs about 5400 pounds.) Im selling the trailer because I dont use it, and Id rather sell it and save on storage fees and use the money for other things. Great trailer, and if I used it more Id keep it. Trailer comes with stabilizer bar system (a $500 value. . .I didnt purchase it, as it came with the trailer, but Ive bought them before, and theyre not cheap so I estimate it at $500+.) Title is clear and in-hand, so no problems with that or anything. Great trailer, and Im sure the next owner will love using it! $26,999.00

5 Best & Worst GMC Safari Years (We Checked)

' src=

The GMC Safari has had its ups and downs over the years, with various models providing standout features and performance.

Table of Contents

While some years of the Safari delivered reliable service, others faced challenges and attracted some criticism from drivers and experts alike.

This article aims to discuss the best and worst years of the GMC Safari, helping potential buyers make an informed decision when looking to purchase this versatile minivan.

The Best Year for GMC Safari

One of the standout years for the GMC Safari was 2003.

This model received positive reviews for its reliability and durability. Many owners reported putting well over 200,000 miles on the vehicle with minimal maintenance required.

The 2003 GMC Safari was available in both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, catering to different needs and preferences.

The 2003 Safari came with a 4.3L V6 engine, offering a good balance of power and fuel efficiency, which was especially impressive for its time. This engine was paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission that provided a smooth driving experience and responsive handling.

gmc safari condo

In terms of interior features, the 2003 GMC Safari provided ample space for passengers and cargo, as well as various seating configurations to suit different requirements. These features, along with the overall comfortable design, made it suitable for families and businesses alike.

Safety features were also a strong focus in the 2003 model year, with standard equipment such as 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS, driver and passenger airbags, and daytime running lights. These safety enhancements provided added peace of mind for drivers and passengers on their journeys.

The 2nd Best Year

The 2001 GMC Safari deserves recognition as the second-best model year for this classic van. While it didn’t receive quite as many accolades as later years, this model still offers reliability and solid performance.

Shoppers can expect to find features such as:

  • A potent 4.3L V6 engine delivering 190 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque
  • A smooth-shifting 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive
  • A maximum tow rating of 5,800 pounds, allowing for versatile hauling capabilities

Despite a few minor drawbacks, the 2001 GMC Safari excelled in a number of areas. With more than respectable fuel economy, owners could expect to achieve up to 16 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway—a notable perk for those prioritizing efficiency.

Safety-wise, this model year showcased improvements over previous years. Although not considered exceptional, it scored better in crash tests compared to earlier models. Standard safety features included antilock brakes, and GM’s Passlock theft-deterrent system provided an added layer of protection.

One thing the 2001 Safari truly excelled in was cargo space. With a cavernous interior, owners could easily accommodate up to 170.4 cubic feet of luggage, making the van a top choice for families or those embarking on long road trips.

While not as highly praised as newer models, this particular year remains a noteworthy option and good value for used car shoppers looking for reliability and performance to boot.

Other Good Years

As we dive into the GMC Safari’s history, let’s take a look at some other good years for this popular van.

Here’s a list of additional standout years, with brief explanations as to what made them great:

  • 2004 GMC Safari : This model year continued to offer the reliable 4.3-liter V6 engine, and it maintained a strong reputation for durability and dependability. Additionally, the 2004 Safari featured comfortable seating and ample cargo space, providing a versatile option for both families and businesses.
  • 2005 GMC Safari : As the final production year for the Safari, the 2005 model continued to deliver on the strengths of its predecessors. With its trusty V6 engine and spacious interior, this model remained a practical choice for those in search of a reliable van.

These GMC Safari model years were known for their solid performance and dependability, ensuring that they remain an excellent choice for anyone considering a robust and versatile vehicle.

Problematic Year for GMC Safari

The 1996 GMC Safari, while generally a reliable vehicle, has been associated with certain common issues that potential owners or current owners should be aware of.

One of the most reported problems for this model year revolves around the fuel system. Some owners have experienced fuel pump failure, which can lead to the vehicle stalling or not starting at all. The issue typically emerges after a significant mileage, and the only solution is to replace the fuel pump, which can be a relatively expensive repair.

Engine problems are another area of concern for the 1996 GMC Safari.

These include issues like the “Check Engine” light frequently coming on, misfiring, or engine stalling. In several cases, these problems were traced back to issues with the ignition system, such as a faulty ignition coil or a worn-out distributor cap and rotor. Fixing these problems typically involves replacing the faulty components, which, while not overly expensive, can add to maintenance costs over time.

Transmission failures have also been reported with this model, some occurring at relatively low mileages for a transmission issue.

Transmission replacement or rebuild is a significant expense and can be quite a headache for the vehicle’s owner. Symptoms of a failing transmission can include difficulty shifting gears, the transmission slipping out of gear, or a whining or humming noise. If these symptoms are experienced, it is crucial to get the vehicle to a mechanic as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

The 1996 GMC Safari has also had issues with the power door locks not working correctly, which, while less serious than engine or transmission issues, is still a significant inconvenience for owners. The cause is usually a faulty door lock actuator that needs to be replaced.

Lastly, some owners have reported issues with the van’s exterior lighting.

These problems range from the headlights going out intermittently to the brake lights not functioning correctly, posing a potential safety risk.

It’s important to note that while these issues have been reported, they do not affect every 1996 GMC Safari.

Many owners have had minimal problems and have found the van to be reliable. However, if you’re considering purchasing a used 1996 GMC Safari, or if you’re a current owner experiencing unexplained issues, these are areas you might want to investigate.

Remember, regular maintenance and prompt attention to any problems that arise can go a long way toward extending the life of any vehicle.

Common Problems to Look for in Used GMC Safaris

These vans are known for their durability, but they do have some common issues as well. Watch out for these problems when browsing for a used GMC Safari:

ABS Light Due to Brake System Control Unit Failure: This issue has been reported by 74 people, and it affects the ABS system in your van. While driving, you might notice your anti-lock braking system failing, especially at low speeds.

Outside Door Handles May Break: A total of 70 people have reported this issue. The door handles might show signs of wear, and, in some cases, they can break completely.

Door Locks Stop Working: 62 individuals have reported this issue with their GMC Safaris. The doors may become difficult to lock and unlock, causing inconvenience and potential security risks.

Besides these commonly reported issues, there are some other concerns like brake booster and rotor problems, which are frequently mentioned by owners. While looking for a used GMC Safari, make sure to thoroughly inspect these areas and confirm the vehicle’s service history to avoid purchasing a van with recurring issues.

RWD mid size van on a truck chassis

Fantastic RWD mid size van with lots of people/cargo space and towing power. GMC should have never discontinued this vehicle. Only a $$$$$ 1/2 ton truck with crew cab comes close to replacing what this mighty van can do for you. Google it if you do not believe me. It is great for a long vacation or to take your group of friends out to dinner or concert, or to tow your boat or camper. I had 5 Astro/Safari over the last 25 years and they never let me down. One of them I drove it past 350k miles without any major troubles.

This dealership has a lot of pre-o cars to offer..

They sold the car I had seen online. But when I got there, I found another one that I liked for the same price. I’ve I had my oil changed there several times very friendly.

I've always loved the Safari/Astros

this is the 3rd one in our family. highest towing capacity of any mini van. loved the reliability. although, this is the first van that i had a lot of small issues with ac compressor/steering pump/idler/shocks that were taken care in the extended warranty. solid vehicle with lots of room to carry things and the roof rack is very useful.

2004 GMC Safari Base

Best customer service.

My experience was Absolutely Wonderful!!!! I've never been to a dealership that was so welcoming. The staff was very pleasant, courteous and respectful. They made you feel like you belonged there and they appreciate your business. Even though it was a lengthy process, good communication, conversation and attention made the time fly by. Scott and Ahmed were totally awesome!!! Great salesmanship. Everyone was so attentive and my daughter and I greatly appreciated giving them our business. And......I GOT MY CAR!!!!! I would donkey recommend Hart Nissan. 👌

Wish they still made them!

Loved this van! I'm short and sat up high enough to see over short front hood. Had four captains with removable 3rd bench seat. Large enough interior to haul 4x8 sheet plywood and for me to walk front to back on the flat floor. Loved all the extra little storage compartments. All wheel drive and power enough to get through any snow bank! Had it 14 years and would have purchased another, but they discontinued making them.

Way to make an entrance... welcome and cool pics!

Thanks Tequilasunset, that was a wild project! It was celebrated by a 3 month southwest climbing trip/ surfing on the Cali coast. I have more detailed explanations and photos for anyone interested. This website was SOOO helpful and I am so greatful for the users who posted about their builds.

Yeah nekkid, I can only imagine trying to convince my girlfriend to use the photos I have of her using the shower nekkid. "come on honey....The only people who are going to see the photos are mostly 20-70 year old dudes obsessed with vans, come on they don't mind!"

Very nice build and great pics. Can't wait to finish my project and start getting out on some adventures with it.

Nice! Welcome!

The shower system in the door is F'ing genius! Very nice setup, looks like you had a ton of fun building it too! Even better I like how it still looks relatively inconspicuous as a camper van.

after 2 years closing and opening the rear door the heating coil from the shower rattled loose and needed repair. I would have maybe bought a more solid on demand hot water heater to reduce the rattle.

The shower install is awesome. I'm totally copying that. Great ideas here, and it's always cool to see a camper get built and out there in the world.

Goodness guys, I assumed he had some shorts on... Small simple cover for a modicum of privacy. Nice build and 1st Post , thanks for the Photos and great imaginative ideas. Mike

Thanks again all! 97cargocrawler I believe I used some of your ideas for the lift kit and tires. I actually have a larger shower curtain with heavy duty magnets that attach to the doors for maximum privacy. I wanted a low profile camper for bandit camping and easy driving thru metropolitan areas. dmillamj---I can send you more detailed photos of the shower and assembly if you like.

Here's Becca after a long day of climbing in Moab. Note the small gear hammock from West Marine. We had one on each side of the bed, soft storage is key. I think there were 40-50 MPH winds that night and we were stoked to be cooking in PamelaVANderson.
