Olivia Rodrigo to donate portion of 'Guts Tour' ticket sales to end violence against women, per Dublin announcement

Screenshots of Olivia Rodrigo's Instagram stories, where she points to a donation link and shares a photo of her performing on stage in Dublin

In the wake of her popular campaign to fund abortion nonprofits on the U.S. leg of her Guts World Tour, and an exciting initiative supporting women’s shelters in Canada , Olivia Rodrigo just announced her do-good plans for Europe.

“For the entire European leg of the Guts World Tour, a portion of my proceeds from ticket sales will go to Women Against Violence Europe,” the pop star shared on her Instagram stories last night.

“WAVE’s goal is to enable all women and their children to live free from violence.”

The initiative is part of Rodrigo’s Fund 4 Good , a global fundraising project that highlights and supports the work of international nonprofits that expand girls’ education, support reproductive rights, and prevent gender-based violence.

“Fund 4 Good works to support all women, girls, and people seeking reproductive health freedom,” the singer said before taking the stage on the first night of the tour.

The Guts World Tour has 75 stops, and her first show in Dublin last night, Rodrigo will spend a total of 29 nights performing across Europe over the next two months.

During that time, like she mentioned, her ticket sales will be shared with WAVE, a collective of over 160 member organizations across 46 European countries.

“They offer specialized services like women’s shelters, helplines, rape crisis centers, and advocacy organizations,” Rodrigo continued in her video.

She also linked to a donation page for fans across the globe, bolstering her efforts to support WAVE’s mission.

On that donation page, the WAVE Network outlines the impact of these donations.

“Your contribution supports women and children to live free from violence,” WAVE writes on its website.

WAVE shares that donations help the organization strengthen the capacities of its member organizations. With bolstered funds, they can support their clientele, advocate for better legislation to effectively prevent gender-based violence, support funding for women’s specialist services, and collect crucial data about those services in 46 countries.

In the midst of the war in Ukraine , WAVE has increased its efforts to support women and children in crisis — many of whom have been displaced to new or temporary homes across the continent.

The group’s advocacy efforts also extend to refugees and immigrants of all backgrounds, who face increased risks of violence .

“Upholding the gender-specific nature and feminist principles of these services is not merely about prioritizing women; it is about acknowledging and rectifying hundreds of years of systemic inequalities and power imbalances which perpetuate gender-based violence against women and girls today,” WAVE’s executive director Stephanie Futter-Orel and President Marcella Pirrone, wrote in the organization’s annual report .

“WAVE’s commitment to advocating for the preservation and elevation of women's specialist services remains unwavering.”

So, while most fans flock to Rodrigo for her relatable break-up hits and sparkly aesthetic, she continues to succeed in her career full of feminist action , lifting up others who do this work on the ground every day.

Before taking the stage in Dublin, she shared one final call to action: “Join me in supporting this amazing cause: Women Against Violence Europe.”

Jennie Kim’s Custom Alaïa Met Gala Look Took 200 Hours To Make

By Irene Kim

They say good things take time, and Jennie Kim ’s custom Alaïa look designed by Pieter Mulier sure proves that statement. The singer attended the 2024 Met Gala in a royal blue gown that 200 hours and 13 meters of fabric to make.

Read more: Met Gala 2024 Red Carpet

Inspired by the autumn/winter 2024 collection, the custom look was made from a gauzy fabric that blew perfectly under the spring breeze on the red carpet. While we’re not sure if Kim is a “winter” as determined by the colour analysis trends, we do believe that the royal blue shade was meant for her. The star, who can rock just about any silhouette, might also be one of the lucky few who looks good in every colour under the sun.

Like last year, Kim opted for a minidress. The only accessories needed were simple pearl drop earrings and a belly chain. Recently, the singer announced a sunglasses collaboration with Gentle Monster that did not make a special appearance on the carpet, but that’s not to say the sold-out sunglasses didn’t make an appearance at the after-parties.

What to know about the 2024 Kentucky Derby

By Alex Sundby

Updated on: May 4, 2024 / 7:33 PM EDT / CBS News

The 2024 Kentucky Derby Saturday was the 150th running of the high-profile race. Known as the Run for the Roses, the race was the first leg of horse racing's Triple Crown, famously celebrated with mint juleps, seersucker suits and stylish hats.

Mystik Dan, an 18-1 favorite just prior to race time, won in a stunning photo finish over Forever Young and Sierra Leone.

150th Kentucky Derby

Here's what you need to know about the 2024 Kentucky Derby:

Where is the Kentucky Derby held?

The Kentucky Derby was held at Churchill Downs in Louisville. Racetrack officials boast that the Run for the Roses is the oldest continuously held major sporting event in the U.S. The Derby dates back to 1875, when the track was called the Louisville Jockey Club.

What time was the Kentucky Derby?

Post time for the Kentucky Derby was 6:57 p.m. EDT. The race is traditionally held on the first Saturday of May and had been on that day for 73 years — from 1946 to 2019 — before the coronavirus pandemic's disruption to everyday life in 2020 moved the Derby to September . It returned to May in 2021 and has since stayed on the first Saturday of the month.

The Derby has been held on every day of the week except for Sunday, but it's been on the first Saturday in May a total of 92 times.

How long is the Kentucky Derby?

The Kentucky Derby has been 1 1/4 miles long since 1896. While the dirt track at Churchill Downs is only a mile long, the starting gate and the finish line are in different places, allowing the race to go that extra quarter mile.

What were the Kentucky Oaks results?

The Kentucky Oaks is the all-filly race held a day before the Kentucky Derby. Thorpedo Anna won the so-called Run for the Lilies followed by Just F Y I and Regulatory Risk respectively on a sloppy track in front of a crowd of more than 107,000 on Friday.

How many horses run in the Kentucky Derby?

The field for the Kentucky Derby has been kept to a maximum of 20 horses since 1975. If a horse pulls out, or scratches, from the race in the days leading up to the Derby, additional horses can fill out the field until the scratch deadline. Last year's Derby field featured 18 horses after five scratched from the race.

Who was favored to win the Kentucky Derby?

Fierceness, the winner of March's Florida Derby, was named the morning line favorite by Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia with 5-2 odds. The bay colt was followed in the morning line odds by Sierra Leone at 3-1 and Catching Freedom at 8-1.

In the end though, it was Mystik Dan, who had opened at 20-1 odds, who came away with the win.

What horses ran in the Kentucky Derby?

Here's the complete list of the horses running in the Kentucky Derby in order from post closest to the inside of the track out with their morning line odds:

  • Dornoch (20-1)
  • Sierra Leone (3-1)
  • Mystik Dan (20-1)
  • Catching Freedom (8-1)
  • Catalytic (30-1)
  • Just Steel (20-1)
  • Honor Marie (20-1)
  • Just a Touch (10-1)
  • T O Password (30-1)
  • Forever Young (10-1)
  • Track Phantom (20-1)
  • West Saratoga (50-1)
  • Endlessly (30-1)
  • Domestic Product (30-1)
  • Grand Mo the First (50-1)
  • Fierceness (5-2)
  • Stronghold (20-1)
  • Resilience (20-1)
  • Society Man (50-1)
  • Epic Ride (50-1)

How much is the Kentucky Derby purse?

The Kentucky Derby purse was raised to $5 million for the 150th running after being $3 million since 2019. The additional prize money means the winner will collect $3.1 million with $1 million for second place, $500,000 for third, $250,000 for fourth and $150,000 for fifth.

How much are Kentucky Derby ticket prices?

Tickets were still available in the days leading up to the Kentucky Derby, starting at $130 and going up to five figures. The big race is the 12th of the day at Churchill Downs — post time for the first race is 10:30 a.m. EDT — with two more races scheduled for Saturday night after the Derby.

The $130 tickets are for general admission to the racetrack's infield. While the area is surrounded by the track, tickets are sold on Ticketmaster with a disclaimer that they don't come with a seat, view of the track or access to the frontside of Churchill Downs and its newly renovated paddock area. The Derby's website says fans can "watch the races from the world's largest 4K video board."

For $275, tickets were available for the part of the infield near the final turn, when the horses make the closing sprint down the homestretch to the finish line. Those tickets also don't have seats or a view of the track, and they have a $52 service fee added on Ticketmaster.

Tickets for reserved seats throughout Churchill Downs were recently being sold for Derby day, ranging from a $750 ticket — plus a $127 fee — to a $3,500 ticket with a $595 fee.

What were the 2023 Kentucky Derby results?

Mage won the 2023 Kentucky Derby with 15-1 odds. The chestnut colt crossed the finish line first with a winning time of 2:01.57 ahead of Two Phil's and Angel of Empire, who came in second and third respectively.

The field rounds turn one during the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 6, 2023, in Louisville, Kentucky.

What are the fastest Kentucky Derby times?

Secretariat holds the record for the fastest Kentucky Derby time, finishing the 1 1/4 miles in 1:59.40 in 1973. Before then, the record was 2 minutes flat, set by Northern Dancer in 1964. In 2001, Monarchos recorded a winning time of 1:59.97 for the second-fastest Derby time .

Mystik Dan finished in 2:03.34.

Irish eyes smile upon Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry in Zurich Classic of New Orleans triumph

Duo outlasts chad ramey/martin trainer in playoff at tpc louisiana.

Change Text Size

When Martin Trainer missed his par-saving, playoff-extending putt late Sunday at TPC Louisiana, the Irish lads – you couldn’t really call them anything else, could you? – looked at each other and hugged. Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy had won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Lowry lifted McIlroy up in a colossal embrace, and the celebration was on.

The duo – friends for a quarter century, nearby homeowners in South Florida and weekly playdate pals with their young kids – turned things around Sunday after a tough start and walked away PGA TOUR winners, again.

“We went out there, we had loads of fun, and we won the tournament. You couldn’t ask for a better week,” Lowry said.

“To win any PGA TOUR event is very cool, but to do it with one of your closest friends … Think about where we met and where we've come from, to be on this stage and do this together – just awesome to be able to do it alongside this guy,” McIlroy added.

For McIlroy, it was his 25th TOUR title, his third in a tournament debut. He now has at least one win in seven consecutive PGA TOUR seasons. Lowry won for the first time on TOUR since the 2019 Open Championship, his third TOUR win overall.

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry news conference after winning Zurich Classic

McIlroy and Lowry were the expected champions, given the lack of proven winners around them on the leaderboard heading into Sunday. But no one could have predicted Trainer and Chad Ramey zipping 25 spots up the leaderboard in the final round after a format-tying 9-under 63. They were waiting around for upwards of three hours before finding out they would be in a playoff.

And even though McIlroy and Lowry were the favorites, that doesn’t mean the win was guaranteed.

Lowry said at breakfast Sunday they noticed how much the trees were whipping and yet, Ramey and Trainer shot “an unbelievable score.” Lowry and McIlroy were 1-over through six holes and needed to make something happen quickly – and that’s exactly what they did.

“To play the last 12 holes in 5-under I think was very, very good," Lowry said. "It showed a lot about our character and how much we wanted to win this thing,”

Lowry is about two years older than McIlroy; the duo first represented Ireland at the 2007 European Amateur Team Championship. They were European Ryder Cup teammates in both Wisconsin and Rome. And they played together at the Olympics in 2021, something they’re hoping to do again this summer in Paris.

“I know to go back to Ireland with an Olympic medal would be like a dream,” Lowry said.

“I was in a seven-way playoff in Tokyo for a bronze medal, and I’ve never tried so hard to finish third in my life,” added McIlroy.

This was McIlroy’s fourth straight week of TOUR competition, and Lowry’s third straight. There were no signs of fatigue from either man late Sunday at TPC Louisiana, with McIlroy knocking his drive on the par-5 18th in regulation upwards of 350 yards. Lowry, with a laugh, said he wasn’t sure what to do from the position his partner had left him in.

Rory McIlroy’s clutch 72nd hole chip yields tying birdie at Zurich Classic

This wouldn’t be considered a breakthrough victory for either player, given their long-standing pedigree and solid starts to 2024 (Lowry had two top-five finishes in Florida, while McIlroy won on the DP World Tour earlier this year and finished third at the Valero Texas Open earlier this month), but their easy chemistry in Louisiana could be a harbinger of good things to come.

The fans in New Orleans, too, seemed to buoy the boys. There were chants of "Rory, Rory," and there was a story relayed on the CBS broadcast of Lowry and McIlroy getting a standing ovation when they left dinner on Saturday night at Arnaud’s, a jazzy, 100-year-old fine-dining spot in New Orleans' French Quarter.

“It's not lost on me how cool that is. Every time I get to play in front of thousands of people, the little boy in me just thinks it's so cool and so exciting,” McIlroy said. “The crowd really made the weekend.”

“Rory brings a crowd, and people love him. We've got a lot of love this week in New Orleans, and we've had just the best week,” added Lowry.

What now, though? It was a big week and a big win for some of the TOUR’s most affable players. For Lowry, he’s earned his way into the rest of the Signature Events on the 2024 schedule, and it’s “freed him up,” he said. For McIlroy, he had exited big events like THE PLAYERS and the Masters with a few more questions about his game and its overall direction. This week, though, McIlroy reflected on why he and Lowry, all those years ago back home, started playing golf – because it was fun.

“I think sort of reinjecting a little bit of that fun back into it in a week like this week – it can always help,” McIlroy said.

“Hopefully we can both kick on now,” Lowry said of good things to come. “It was great fun all week, everything about it was just brilliant.”

When Irish eyes are smiling, it leads to a PGA TOUR victory.

'Hacks' Season 3 is proof that compelling storylines and character growth take time

Ava (Hannah Einbinder), left, and Deborah (Jean Smart) have both grown a lot since we first met them in Season 1 of Hacks on Max. Max hide caption

Ava (Hannah Einbinder), left, and Deborah (Jean Smart) have both grown a lot since we first met them in Season 1 of Hacks on Max.

It's pretty sad to find yourself referring to a third season of an Emmy-winning show as an example of streamers letting something run for a decent length of time. And, while many of us have a sense that "everything gets canceled so fast!" there's some nuance about how true that really is. Some of that depends on how you handle the knotty question of the "limited series."

But boy, it sometimes seems like everything gets canceled awfully fast. And in that environment, seeing Hacks return for a third season that's perhaps its strongest yet is a reminder that, given the chance, good shows often pay off over time in ways that can't be realized in their first, hottest, premise-establishing, character-establishing runs.

'Hacks': A Comedic Generational Divide Gets Bridged, (Jean) Smartly

'Hacks': A Comedic Generational Divide Gets Bridged, (Jean) Smartly

We first got to know Ava (Hannah Einbinder), a young comedy writer who thought she was very cool and very progressive, when she reluctantly went to work as a writer for Deborah Vance ( Jean Smart ). Deborah was slowly ossifying at her long-running casino gig, and she felt like she needed something fresh — not that she was really willing to listen to Ava all that much. The two women have been through a lot since then, including an estrangement or two (Ava wrote a horrible note about Deborah to people who wanted to destroy her; Deborah slapped Ava in the face for calling her a hack; nobody's perfect). At the end of the second season, the two parted ways after Deborah had some newfound success and realized Ava needed to go work on her own career.

How 'Hacks' makes those hilariously relatable TV moments

How 'Hacks' makes those hilariously relatable TV moments

So naturally, at the beginning of the third season, we find Deborah enjoying a new kind of success as a more interesting performer, but also a ... perhaps we can say "cooler" one. (She just did a Super Bowl commercial!) Ava, meanwhile, is a writer on a good comedy show. Will their fates lead them back together? Of course, yes. We know this. But what makes Hacks interesting at this stage is that Ava and Deborah remain themselves, but they've been affected by the things we've seen happen to them since their relationship started. The Ava we know now would never approach Deborah with the arrogance and dismissiveness that she did in the first season, and the Deborah we know now would never treat Ava as insensitively as she often did then.

They've evolved professionally, too. There's a good scene early on in the new season in which Deborah realizes that popular success has made it extremely easy to get laughs without trying very hard. She doesn't actually have to be good – just like she didn't in Vegas, when her audience snoozily accepted her material. But now, having done all the work she's done, she has more of an interest in being good; it unsettles her to get the kind of adulation she once believed she wanted. Being a hack, this scene suggests, is less about being bad than it is about not caring whether you're good.

And Ava is less grasping now, less on the outs with the comedy world. The gag of her having been "canceled" over a tweet is pretty much over, which is good, since there is not another drop to be wrung out of that idea.

This kind of thing, characters growing and changing, is far from revolutionary. It's the very reason for serialized storytelling to exist in the realm of character-based comedies as opposed to pure joke factories. But you usually cannot accomplish this kind of change with a single season, or even with two six- or eight-episode runs. What you're now seeing with Hacks is the upside of even a little bit of patience, of affording the time for a pair of characters to spend time together and apart and be affected by each other.

It also allows for things that might be a little bit out of balance in the beginning to change. When Hacks started, my biggest hesitation was that I could not stand Ava. It's not that she wasn't likable (Deborah wasn't either, really). But Ava was so obnoxious and so arrogant that it crossed over into a place where ... I didn't care. I wanted her to get fired and go away forever. It didn't help that she rarely seemed funny enough to be a good comedy writer. Whether it's me learning to understand her better, or the show and Einbinder presenting her a little differently, Ava is now more like Deborah, to me: flawed and messy and consumed by ego at times, but plausibly talented and basically decent.

Co-creator Jen Statsky on 'Hacks'

Hbo's 'hacks' unites two struggling comedians.

I also have really grown to appreciate the dynamic between Deborah and Ava's agent, Jimmy (Paul W. Downs, who co-created Hacks with Jen Statsky and Lucia Aniello) and his assistant, Kayla (Megan Stalter). At first, despite Stalter offering a dynamite performance, Kayla came off a bit pitiful, begging for Jimmy's attention with a kind of vulgarity that he answered with exasperated disgust. But particularly since Jimmy left his agency and he and Kayla struck out on their own, they've become a truly cooperative pair, and while they are both still a lot , Jimmy gets the fact that his assistant has talents and abilities beyond just her devotion to him.

I have my small complaints about the third season, most of which have "but" statements attached: I could certainly have done with a little more from Marcus (Carl Clemons-Hopkins), but what the show gives us works very well. I'm not sure they needed a "college students and cancellation" story later in the season, but they do a solid job with it once they're there. And there is a creative decision made toward the end of the season that I know I will be arguing about with people who love this show, but I am intrigued by how it does or does not fit into the season.

This is all good, though. It's chewy and complicated, and that comes from a kind of breathing room that giving a show eight half-hour episodes just isn't going to give you. The result is that a show that's always been funny and prickly and full of wonderful performances is also, in this season, a more compelling story about people.

Over the past week, students at dozens of universities held demonstrations, set up encampments and, at times, seized academic buildings. In response, administrators at many of those colleges decided to crack down and called in the local police to detain and arrest demonstrators.

As of Thursday, the police had arrested 2,000 people across more than 40 campuses, a situation so startling that President Biden could no longer ignore it.

Jonathan Wolfe, who has been covering the student protests for The Times, and Peter Baker, the chief White House correspondent, discuss the history-making week.

Background reading

As crews cleared the remnants of an encampment at U.C.L.A., students and faculty members wondered how the university could have handled protests over the war in Gaza so badly .
