another strange noise - 97 grand voyager

  • Add to quote

Only occurs while driving over bumps and its coming from the passenger side rear corner... I tried rocking the body while parked and couldn't get it to make the noise... after a little investigation I noticed the taillight was loose, thought that’s what it must be... Well I was wrong... I checked everywhere under the vehicle looking for something out of place including pulling the tire and checking the breaks and inner fender well... still nothing... any help or ideas would be really appreciated... I replaced the front sway bar bushing 6 months ago... so I know that’s not the problem... and the sound is coming from the passenger side rear. Thanks in advance for you help :help_wsig:help_wsig:help_wsig:help_wsig

Had a noise a few years back coming from the driver's side rear. Like you I was going nuts checking this and that for several weeks. Decided to swap the shocks from left to right. In the process I found wheel well liner was loose. Two "keepers" were broken. I went crazy with a rivet gun. Not a peep since.

Pending your mileage (you don't say), it could be a spring/shackle bushing that is worn and you're hitting metal to metal, now. :ask_wsign

Have you tried the tailgate? Mine rattled around, you can adjust the rubber bumpers (if it has them) to tighten the gate. I contact cemented strips of an old inner tube on the rub points and quited it right down. (1990 GV). You might investigate the edge of the tailgate to see if you have any points worn through the paint, it you find them you can try lubricating that point and seeing if it helps.

I'd say also check that your exhaust isn't hitting your rear axle when you go over bumps.

Thank you everyone for your responses... It’s not the exhaust, and not the inner fender well liner. Today I was coming home from taking the kids home from school today the kids stated they felt the vibration when they hear the noise in the floor area if you looking at the passenger side of the van from the outside looking in the sliding door area the kids said they felt it on the left hand side about 6 inches into the vehicle. I looked under the van the its right in the area there the front of the leaf spring mounts to the frame... the bushing looks fine and the mounting bracket it tight... I have no idea I'm still very stumped...

How about the seat brackets themselves. Were the kids sitting in the seats when the noise occured. Usually this kind of noise does not occur when the seat is occupied. My rear seat constantly rattled until I took some wood door shims and tightened the area where it slides so it would not have play in it. It was the rear bench. It was a clatter on a bump.

nope, just checked... still open to all input

Maybe put the vehicle up on a lift and have a closer look at the spring mounts and shocks as the suspension hangs.

Good point, while the suspension is hanging, check the shock bushings to see if they're worn or non-existent. If the bolt goes through the bushing off-center, something is wrong. You should be able to track things better while it's on the lift. Wiggle everything that's supposed to be securely mounted. Something has to be loose.

I will try that thank you

Is this a cyclic noise (speeds up with vehicle speed), or just random bumping, clunking?

just random bumping... It almost sounds like a dead blow hammer tapping the floor from under the van while going over uneven surfaces... when I get back from the beach this weekend I'm taking it to my buddys house that has a lift. Again thank everone with your knowledge.

:help_wsigok. after checking everything... could it be my shock bottoming out??? they look original and it has 117,000 mile on it.:help_wsig

grand voyager 97 americana

I did pull the wheel and drum off and I didn't notice anything out of place... is there something I should look futher into?

The e-brake arm can make this noise if a cable is broken or got out of that arm. Unforunately I don't have any pictures, sorry!

thanks

:beerchug:You welcome!

if this is the problem the e-brake will not work right?

Yes, just one side still working(if you loose just one side).

Problem is fixed! I went to replace my rear shocks got the drivers side off with no problem, then onto the passenger side… as I tried to loosen the bolt that goes into the axel it was really tough and wouldn’t budge, so I hit it with kroil for a little while. While waiting for the kroil to penetrate I noticed something must have impacted the area where the bolt the screws into. Obvious deformity and that’s why the bolt would not thread out. So after a huge breaker bar I ended up snapping the bolt. I drilled it out and re-tapped it and installed the new shocks with a new bolt … guess what the noise was gone. I’m guessing whatever impacted the axel must have been the contributing factor in the noise I heard. My wife says she don’t remembering hitting anything… lol

A walk in Moscow's grand new park, created by an American

October 7, 2018 / 9:30 AM EDT / CBS News

MOSCOW -- The hottest selfie destination in Russia's capital sits at the end of an elegant V-shaped walkway in Moscow's Zaryadye Park. The park itself is brand new – the result of an international collaboration led by New York-based architect Charles Renfro.

He is a partner in the firm, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, which also designed the wildly successful High Line in New York City.

Zaryadye, also wildly successful, is Moscow's first new city park in 50 years.

"It has become the most visited destination in central Moscow, and that makes me have chills and shivers," Renfro told correspondent Elizabeth Palmer.

Visitors have flocked to the park ... walkers and lovers, dreamers, tourists, families and friends.

But bringing Renfro's radically modern vision to Moscow caused some culture shock. Take the walkway that extends over but not across the Moscow River. "This bridge goes nowhere.  It goes nowhere! We had a hard time getting it through," said Renfro.

Why? "Well, because of the fact that it's not a bridge. And I think the Muscovites were wanting it to be functional. 'Why should we build a fairly expensive feature in the park that does nothing?' But you see how popular it is!"

Filled with light and life, this park is a prime example of how much Moscow has changed. Two decades ago, the site was home to the hulking Rossiya Hotel – a Soviet landmark famous for its 3,000 drab rooms, and its cockroaches. Finally, in 2006 it was demolished. For years the site stood derelict, until in 2012 President Vladimir Putin ordered up a park.

Renfro said, "We questioned whether we should do the competition, politics being what they were."

But Renfro was as stunned as anyone when Diller Scofidio + Renfro won the competition to design Zaryadye. "The idea that we could make something this intimate, this special, in the center of one of the world's busiest, biggest urban cities was just too titillating and too, too exciting," he said.

The Americans worked closely with their Russian partners, Citymakers, to design 32 undulating acres covered in native plants and trees … birds, drawn to this green refuge, which recreates all of Russia's landscapes.

Here, for example, are plants from the far north, underneath the fairytale domes of St. Basil's.

Renfro's partner, landscape architect Mary Margaret Jones, is the head of Hargreaves Associates based in New York.  She calls it "wild urbanism."

"Here we are, right now we're lost in this birch forest, [and] the city is right there. So, it's wild but it's urban," Jones said. "What interested us is the fact that it is a park, it is a landscape. And landscape is something that speaks to all people."

When they enter it, they leave the city behind. "The park managers, they love this part of the park – they say it's a little too romantic sometimes.  We think that's great!" said Jones.

But tucked under every hill in this park are hidden treasure.

moscow-park-ice-cave-620.jpg

Visitors can go inside to see a mock ice cave, a virtual reality tour of Moscow, or the Philharmonic Orchestra, in a magnificent new concert hall inaugurated just weeks ago that sits under a graceful glass dome.  Putin himself boasted that the hall was the best in Europe.

This summer, Renfro and Jones – along with their Moscow partner, Petr Kudryavtsev – spoke at the edgy Moscow Urban Forum. Renfro said, "I think the thing that worked out best was international cooperation."

Palmer said, "Russian-American relations are at their lowest point in a long time."

"Ohhh, you're going to go there," laughed Renfro.

"I have to go there!"

"I think it's wrong to say that American-Russian relations are at their worst point. What's at a bad point is our leadership around the world. But I think the people that are actually making this world a better place are doing so more cooperatively and more effectively than ever before."

Of Zaryadye Park, Renfro said, "This is a park for centuries. This is a piece of the city that will last well beyond anybody's lifetime.  It's a park for eternity."
