A storied island
England bike tours.
A visit to England offers a glimpse at its history and traditions through ancient villages, medieval castles, prehistoric structures and leading museums. Such history is set alongside the vibrant British culture, making it one of the most diverse places in the world.
While London attracts millions of visitors each year, cyclists treasure natural diversity beyond the city. Pedal through lovely meadows, hills and lakes dotted with quaint villages.
England also boasts coastal areas with cliffs and charming seaside villages. The rolling hills and a yearlong mild climate also make England a prime cycling destination.
“This was a life-changing experience...my first bicycle tour and my first time in either country. It was, in a word, amazing. A totally unique experience. Can't wait to do my next one!”

Isle of Wight Cycling Tour
This is a lovely short break for cyclists who want an attractive sightseeing tour, with a mixture of town and country. Almost half the island has been designated as an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Distances are fairly short giving you time to stop and explore. The route is undulating and there are a few hills but nothing particularly difficult.
Northern England
Yorkshire Wolds Cycling Tour
Unwind on this beautiful circular tour of the Yorkshire Wolds on quiet country lanes for ‘big sky’ cycling on back roads with long views. This cycle will appeal to those who want a gentle introduction to cycling in the English countryside, as the North York Wolds Cycle Route is certainly set up for that. The ‘Wolds’ comprise a great arcing chain of chalky hills north of the Humber Estuary. You can literally see for miles across this gently rolling, colourful chalk land‑agricultural landscape and then be winding your way through a sudden hidden dry valley. These are just some of the features painted by the internationally acclaimed artist David Hockney, who first discovered the Yorkshire Wolds on a bicycle. It is a landscape that inspired Hockney’s ‘Woldgate’. Along the way, the ride passes by hidden villages, grand country houses, nature reserves, historic priories, and some of the region’s most fascinating landmarks.
Yorkshire Dales Cycleway Tour
The iconic Yorkshire Dales National Park has extraordinary natural beauty derived from the Iceland rain sculptured limestone. It has over thousands of years been fashioned into a range of shallow and deep ‘Dales’, gorges, rocky pavements, waterfalls and gushing rivers, caves and woodland glades. Human interaction with the landscape has moulded the geology to create farms and fields lined with miles of dry‑stone walls, the ribbed ruins of abbeys, medieval castles, pastures glowing with multi‑shades of green, sitting below wilder lands of heather and sedge, home of red grouse and deer. The Yorkshire Dales Cycleway follows a circuit of normally quiet lanes that are ideal for cycling.
Cycling in Cornwall Tour
Cornwall is very much a holiday county with beaches, famous Cornish pasties, pirates, shipwrecks and the roaring sea. A cycling tour in Cornwall is a spectacular way to explore this part of England at the perfect pace, and this bike tour is so much more. Expect a journey through a varying landscape of inland heaths and downs, rolling hills and tumbling coastlines.

The far southwestern part of England in Cornwall is as unique as it is beautiful, and you’ll experience it in a special way by bicycle on the Southwest Cornwall cycling tour. Experience Cornish culture at its finest as you cycle from guesthouse to guesthouse and enjoy local hospitality all along the way.

England – The Cotswolds Bike Tour
.cls-1{fill:#2c6bb5;} badv_abilitylevel_icons intermediate, daily distance, 35-45 miles, included activities, cycling (bikes included), sudeley castle, chedworth roman villa, roman baths (museum), included meals, all breakfasts. two lunches and two dinners on your own..
When you imagine “picture-postcard” English countryside, it’s likely an image of the Cotswolds – England’s largest “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” – that comes to mind. Now picture yourself there – riding a bicycle! – on bucolic country roads with polite English drivers and beautiful views around every corner. It’s hard to believe that this enchanting, richly rural, region is so close to the “big city” hustle and bustle of London. Beautiful villages and towns of honey-colored stone dot the landscape of “wolds” (hills) and “cots” (stone-fenced sheep pens). In addition to iconic locations such as Oxford, Shakespeare’s Stratford upon Avon, and Bath, you’ll discover outstanding gardens, medieval churches and castles, country homes, lovely hotels, and some of the best (as well as oldest) pubs in the world. Truly, this is the “real England” in all its glory!
PEDAL HAPPY: Most of the riding on this tour is on typical English countryside roads which are well-paved but relatively narrow, as well as some ‘bridleway’ / canal routes limited to cyclists and pedestrians. About 12% of the roads are hard-packed but unpaved and there may be some short sections of cobblestones.
RENTAL BIKES: Models will be different for the bike-types (road and e-bike) shown at the bottom of the web page. Call or request our Guest Information Packet for more specifics.
COMBINING TOURS : We schedule our United Kingdom tour dates to make longer adventures possible. You can combine our England tour with Ireland or Scotland for the ultimate U.K. cycling experience!

Cycle on quiet, twisting country lanes, and ... "thence" to Stratford for some Shakespeare!
– Breakfast
+1,702 ft / -1,702 ft

Pedal to the "Venice of the Cotswolds" and visit Chedworth Roman Villa on the way to Tetbury.
The Hare and Hounds
+2,717 ft / -3,012 ft
Today we head south through the nearby “honeypot” villages of Lower Slaughter (meaning “muddy place”) and Bourton-on-the-Water renowned locally as the “Venice of the Cotswolds.” Traverse the rolling landscape of the North/South divide and visit the Chedworth Roman Villa (included) as we head down the spine of the Cotswolds toward Tetbury. Spend tonight amongst acres of beautiful gardens and woodlands at The Hare and Hounds .
Visit the oldest borough in England and Castle Combe - voted the prettiest! - on your way to historic Bath.
– Breakfast – Lunch
The Queensberry Hotel
+1822 ft / -2104 ft
Our final “point-to-point” ride will take us the last 40 miles into the center of Bath where we will spend the last two nights of the tour. Along the way, we will visit Malmesbury – England’s oldest borough according to the Guinness Book of World Records – and Castle Combe (voted the prettiest village in England) before descending into Bath. Stay tonight and tomorrow at the centrally located The Queensberry Hotel , a combination of Georgian-traditional style with “cheeky twists of contemporary comfort.” Dinner is on your own tonight.

A fitting quote for the circumstances, we think. Our Cotswolds adventure finishes after breakfast on the morning of Day 7. If you are leaving Bath today, we will transfer you to the Bath Spa train station at 10:30am where you can catch a train to London, or one of the London airports (generally less than 2 hours away). Cycling is a great way to explore Norfolk & Suffolk, and when you add a beautiful rolling landscape and a network of quiet country lanes you the have the perfect place to get those pedals turning!
For the last 21 years our families have been cycling the byways, tracks and lanes of Norfolk & Suffolk, in the process we’ve discovered numerous ruined castles, deserted beaches, wonderful village inns, amazing children’s attractions and a wide collection of fascinating places to explore. And because we don’t have any serious hills in this lovely part of England everyone can cycle our routes – even if you’ve not been on a bike for years!
Using our own experiences we’ve developed a unique range of cycling tours that explore the very best bits of Norfolk and Suffolk. All our routes follow quiet country lanes to search out and discover a wealth of interesting places each day – you can also choose between different route options and while you travel ‘light’ on one of our modern touring bikes all your luggage is transported to your evening destination – usually a comfortable country hotel or a high quality bed and breakfast.
So whether you want a 2 day Family Adventure or a 6 day Coastal Exploration we’re sure we have something to suit – and don’t forget we’ve cycled all these routes ourselves so just give us a call if you want to discuss options or talk about any aspect of our tours.
Hoping to see you soon,
Martin, Phil, Mick and the UK Cycle Holiday Team
If you want to check availability, options, costs or have any other questions about our cycling breaks then please just give me a call or send me a note and I'll get back to you asap.

England Cycling Tours: the Best Self Guided Bike Holidays
Explore england on an affordable cycling holiday.
If you're a fan of active travel and want to explore England on a cycling tour, you're in the right place. Here we list our top picks for the best self guided cycling holidays in England.
On these unforgettable bike trips in England, you'll discover the beautiful rolling countryside, charming villages, authentic food and beer, and that warm, good natured hospitality that England is renowned for. Experience the Cotswolds, become immersed in the Isle of Wight, admire the coast in Cornwall or even ride the iconic Cyclist's Coast to Coast trail . The key advantage of a self guided bike tour is that you can cycle at your own pace and take the time to truly discover the hidden secrets of the country via England's back roads.
Without a doubt, these are England's best self guided cycling tours where you'll have a fantastic time.
Cornish Cycle Tour
Discover the famous seaside region of Cornwall in England's south west on an incredible cycling holiday. Highlights of this bike trip include seeing shipwrecks, eating cornish pasties, hearing the history of pirates and visiting sheltered coves.
Explore Cornwall your way on this 9 day self guided Cornish Cycle tour . It's graded as moderate to challenging, due to some hilly parts, however the beautiful rivers, castles and gardens are a fitting reward to this great bike holiday.
Cotswolds By Bike Tour
If you're yet to experience England's gorgeous countryside, the Cotswolds by Bike tour is the right trip for you. Spend your days cycling between village pubs and old coaching inns. Along the way, you'll absorb the charming features of the landscape: churches, gardens, Roman villas, regency buildings, fords, and cottages - all cobbled together by the intriguing English history.
This is what A Worsley from Australia had to say about their trip:
"My daughter and I have just completed a self guided bike trip of the Cotswolds in England. What a fantastic experience, challenge and adventure the 8 days provided. The scenery was breathtaking and the townships we rode through were magnificent. All the accommodation was excellent with luggage always greeting us at our destination... Thoroughly recommend this adventure and thank you to UTracks for an efficient and comprehensive booking service."
The Cyclist's Coast to Coast Tour
While perhaps more famous as a walking tour, the Coast to Coast trail can also be completed on a bike as well. Also known as Wainwright's Way, the Coast to Coast route covers the breadth of England, from the Irish Sea to the North Sea. Cyclists can ride this trip in just 6 fun-filled days as they cross from Whitehaven to Tynemouth.
This is a challenging, and overly satisfying, cycling trip. There's much to see, including the Cumbrian Lakes and Fells, the bleak Pennines, beautiful Dales and many warm and inviting inns to welcome you at the end of each enjoyable day.
As a fun fact, this route is nicknamed the C2C, which stands for Sea to Sea rather than the often-thought Coast to Coast! This is because riding the Coast to Coast follows a slightly different trail to the walking version .
Isle of Wight Cycle Tour
This is a lovely short cycling tour that fully explores the Isle of Wight in just 5 days. Due to the island's largely flat terrain, this ride is graded as introductory to moderate, and allows for plenty of free time to explore as you wish.
The route starts in Ryde and circumnavigates all of the glorious coastal views of the Isle of White. Discover the estuary around Newport and the old town of Yarmouth, marvel at Queen Victoria's Osborne House and take the time to soak in the island lifestyle, half of which has been designated an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

"I think this is just a great opportunity to see the city. I mean, the streets are closed. This like never happens. We were just through Manhattan. It was amazing. It gives you a different view of the city,” said Diego Garcia, a participant in the Five Boro Bike Tour.
Garcia is new to the city after recently moving to the area from Mexico.
Ari Calem, who is originally from Maryland, has been living and working in the city for about three years. She too took part in the bike tour for the first time on Sunday.
"My bike is kind of a plain casual bike. So I'm just enjoying the city, getting some exercise, but not taking it too intensely,” Calem said.
Spectrum News NY1 spoke with two riders Sunday who are blind. They said they feel empowered when riding in the Five Boro Bike Tour.
"We just want to be part of this community, this high energy. We're athletes at the highest level. We both compete internationally,” said Kiana Glanton, who rode Sunday on a tandem bike.
Glanton said she wants people to know there are no limits to what somebody can do.
"I'm just excited to bring some more light and awareness and education to visual impairments and blindness and people — what they can do," said Griffin Pinkow.
The Five Boro Bike Tour raises money to fund free bike education programs throughout the city, including teaching young New Yorkers in all five boroughs how to ride on city streets.
"We teach formerly incarcerated New Yorkers to become bike mechanics, and they get jobs maintaining Citi Bikes, and their lives are turned around," Podziba said. "We also teach tens of thousands of New Yorkers how to ride — how to ride safely."
The event has around 70 different organizations that serve as charity partners, according to Podziba.
Danielle Kang: Aramco Team Series Seoul is breather from ‘suffocating’ LPGA Tour life
M ajor winner Danielle Kang is hoping a break from “suffocating” life on the LPGA Tour to play this week’s Aramco Team Series event in South Korea can breathe new life into her season.
The American is among the big names teeing it up at the $1m tournament in Seoul, along with England’s Charley Hull and Bronte Law, and home favourite Hyo-Joo Kim.
It marks the Ladies European Tour’s first foray into South Korea, a modern-day golfing hotbed with more players in the top 50 of the women’s Rolex Rankings than any other country.
‘I can finally breathe’: Nelly Korda relief at equalling LPGA Tour record in Chevron win
Kang won the 2017 Women’s PGA Championship and is a former world No2 but has slipped to 71st and admits she has fallen out of love with life on the US circuit.
“It’s been a very long time of me playing on that tour, and where I work it’s been very suffocating lately. To come to a different tour was one of my main reasons to come out,” she said.
“I haven’t been wanting to compete or to play. It’s been a very unpleasant environment for me to be working in for a while, and working really hard to be able to compete in that.”
Kang has missed three cuts from seven appearances this year but her drought goes back to January 2022, when she won her sixth LPGA Tour title.
The closest the 31-year-old has come to victory since then was at another Aramco Team Series tournament, in Singapore last year, where she finished second to Pauline Roussin .
“I’m doing the best I can, but selfishly I came out here and wanted to come out because I really do like the Aramco Team Series,” she added.
“I love the team vibe but I’m hoping that this will be a turning point in my career where I’m not just playing on the LPGA, but becoming that competitive golfer that I wanted to become again.
“I think I’m going to be able to ride the momentum from this Aramco Team Series in Seoul and that’s kind of the reason why I really wanted to compete.”
Seoul is the second of five legs in this year’s Aramco Team Series, the Saudi-backed string of big-money events on the LET which routinely draws talent from both major tours.
Germany’s Alexandra Forsterling won in Tampa in March , when Hull was second for the third time in her last four appearances in the series. The Englishwoman also won in New York in 2021.

After a Long, Stressful Career in Law, This Rider Regained Her Health on a Bike
Happily retired, she now loves biking around the United States.
I was a lawyer working long hours and under the stress of constant deadlines for 30 years. I ignored my fitness for too long, and in 2006 at age 48, I embarked on a mission to lose weight and get fitter.
Eventually, I decided to start running. It went so badly, I hired a coach. As an older, heavier runner, she suggested I take a couple of spin classes a week taught by a local cyclist/triathlete. After a few months, she had the audacity to suggest I ride an actual bicycle... outside! That’s when a love of cycling began.
I started riding two to three times a week, as cross training for running. After I retired in 2010, I did consulting for two years. Once I was finished with my professional career, I needed a big goal.
I decided to participate in a half Ironman and ultimately chose Ironman Arizona in 2012. My focus during that period was largely on endurance , maintaining a zone 1 to 2 heart rate, and high cadence for longer distances.
I had also learned about a friend’s bike ride across the United States, and it inspired me to try adventure and exploration cycling. I cycled the Atlantic Coast in 2015 for two weeks, the Pacific Coast in 2016 for six weeks, and did the first quarter of the Trans Am (coast of Oregon to West Yellowstone) in 2018 for four weeks. (These were supported tours with a group called Woman Tours!)
However, I didn’t enjoy being away from my family for so long, so now my adventures are shorter, with a few week-long bike tours in Montana, Arizona, Idaho, and France each year.
I started a blog called Fitter After 50 , and a Facebook group to coordinate training rides and adventures. A core group of us (about 10 people) decided to ride Glacier to Yellowstone in 2021, and we’ve done a week-long trip each summer since then.
In 2022, we did a week of biking and hiking in Sun Valley, Idaho, and the Sawtooth Mountain Range, also in Idaho. In 2023, we completed a Glacier bike tour with The Cycling House. This August, we are planning a week of cycling and hiking in Jackson Hole!
I work in threes for my current cycling schedule: ride three days a week, strength train three days a week, and run or hike three days a week. On strength days, strength is first, and easy aerobic effort is second.
Cycling has brought terrific friends and great adventures into my life! And a lower stress way to maintain fitness . The sense of accomplishment from getting to the top of a big climb or finishing a long ride is amazing!
When I started, I remember getting off my bike and walking up a particular hill , feeling so defeated. I’ve now ridden that hill dozens of times, and used each milestone to support the next.
These tips have made my cycling journey a success:
1. be consistent.
Even during the winter , when I don’t want to ride outside, getting on the WAHOO a couple of times a week gives me structured workouts that help maintain cycling fitness.
2. Enjoy the ride
Be in it for the long run. And don’t do it over the long run if it is not fun. Find what you consider fun, like cruising along, or hammering, or a combination. Find what motivates you, whether it’s a big goal, riding with friends, seeing the country, and use that motivation to continue to be active.
3. Go on a bike tour or week-long state ride
With such a wide variety of options available now, bike tours are a great way to see new places and/or try new things like gravel riding. The Cycling House is my favorite group for week-long bike tours in the United States, and I’ve done four gravel tours with them. If a commercial bike tour is not in your budget, state rides like Cycle Oregon or Tour de Wyoming are great options or shorter events, like the Bourbon Burn in Kentucky.
4. Strength train
There’s a ton of research showing how we lose muscle as we age, but likewise tons of research showing strength training can go a long way to offset that loss.

The 5 boro bike tour: tough to arrange, tough to finish.
The organizer of the event, which takes place on Sunday, says it’s harder to stage than the New York City Marathon.
By James Barron
Good morning. It’s Friday. Today we’ll look at what it takes to stage the Five Boro Bike Tour, scheduled for Sunday. We’ll also get details about an appellate decision in a case that could force changes in policies at public schools with selective admissions policies.
Kenneth Podziba began by saying that it was harder to stage the Five Boro Bike Tour than it was to stage the New York City Marathon.
He is the president and chief executive of Bike New York, a nonprofit group that promotes happenings like the bike tour, which is scheduled for Sunday.
Then he said that he did not want to sound as if he was “bashing or belittling the Road Runners” — the New York Road Runners, the organization that puts on the marathon, the largest of its kind in the world. But Podziba did not, um, backpedal. Mounting the bike tour, the largest of its kind, “is a lot harder,” he said.
How so? Both events cover much of the same ground, from the 2.6-mile-long Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to highways like the Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive and the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. But Podziba said that bicyclists were different from runners. They face hazards that marathoners do not have to worry about.
That is why the bike tour has blowtorches at the ready.
The volunteers carrying them look for expansion joints — narrow connectors between strips of pavement that give the concrete room to move. Only a little, to be sure. But there are two long expansion joints on the F.D.R. that go in the same direction as the traffic, creating a potential hazard for cyclists who do not see them in time to swerve away, Podziba said.
On the Third Avenue Bridge, where the expansion joints run across the road, “the gaps are large enough” to pose problems, he said. Runners would probably not notice the unevenness, but a bicycle rider could go over the handlebars if a tire hit at the wrong angle.
The solution? Put tape over the expansion joints.
The tape will not stick if the joints are wet, Podziba said, so on a damp day the bike tour volunteers go out with blowtorches to dry the joints — carefully, said Podziba, who was the city’s sports commissioner under two mayors, Rudolph Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg, and served as deputy commissioner of the Taxi and Limousine Commission.
After looking at the rainy forecast for Sunday, he said that “it looks like we will need to use the blowtorches.” (A spokeswoman for the New York Road Runners said that “we don’t employ this method” and noted that her group worked with the Department of Transportation “to ensure the marathon course is safe for all participants.” Bike New York does, too, Podziba said. The two groups also coordinate with other city agencies, like the Police Department. And Bike New York removes the tape from the expansion joints once the cyclists have ridden by.)
And then there are the potholes.
Before the marathon, the Road Runners can put a cone over a pothole, Podziba said, but, he added, “we can’t.” The bike tour has volunteers who wave riders around potholes. Volunteers also work to smooth out potential bottlenecks like one that Podziba was concerned about on Kent Avenue in Brooklyn, where he said a lane was partly closed for construction work. The bike tour will close that lane all the way so that riders do not have to snake in and out on Sunday.
Different starting points
The two events start in different places — the marathon on Staten Island, the bike tour in Manhattan, at Church Street and Franklin Street in TriBeCa. (The 32,000 riders have been divided into six groups, called waves, that will pedal off at different times on Sunday morning.)
They also end in different places — the marathon in Central Park, the bike tour at Fort Wadsworth, on Staten Island, where there is an after-party.
The bike tour now draws so many riders that Fort Wadsworth “isn’t big enough,” Podziba said, adding, “We need a natural flow of people leaving.”
There is another difference between the bike tour and the marathon. The bicyclists can get a blessing on Saturday at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine.
It is something the cathedral has offered cyclists, but not runners, for more than 20 years.
“But we could,” said the dean of the cathedral, the Very Rev. Patrick Malloy, who will officiate at the service.
He will sprinkle holy water on each bicycle before the cyclists take “a festive lap inside the cathedral,” walking the length of the nave while ringing the bells on their bikes. Officials from the Department of Transportation will also be at the cathedral for a helmet giveaway for cyclists who need one — and on Sunday, they will. Bike New York says that helmetless riders will be asked to leave.
It will be a partly sunny day in the mid-60s. The evening will be partly cloudy, with temperatures in the high 40s.

What to know : Two weeks after the 12 jurors were impaneled, the case is clipping along, with a half-dozen witnesses heard from. Here are five takeaways from Thursday’s testimony .
Lawsuit challenging school admissions moves forward
A lawsuit that could force changes in policies at New York City public schools with selective admissions policies is moving forward .
A New York appellate court ruled that a lower court judge had erred in dismissing the case.
At issue is what the lawsuit calls “pernicious racial inequality” in city schools, where students are sorted into two different academic tracks starting as early as kindergarten. The lawsuit argues that the system makes racial inequality worse by assigning children to either general elementary school classes or to specialized gifted and talented classes. Children on the gifted-and-talented track are often channeled into selected middle and high schools.
The lawsuit says that many Black and Latino students face “systematic exclusion” from the gifted and selective pipelines and are denied a sound education, as promised by the New York State Constitution. In 2021, when the lawsuit was filed, gifted and talented classes for elementary school students were about 75 percent white and Asian American, and there were relatively few gifted programs in predominantly Black and Latino neighborhoods.
Mark Rosenbaum, one of the lawyers who filed the lawsuit, said the decision allowing the case to proceed was “the beginning of the end of the two-tiered education system in New York City.”
City education officials said on Thursday that they were reviewing the court’s decision. But Daniel Weisberg, the first deputy chancellor, pointed to plans to open nine new schools in the fall — including some in underserved areas — in an effort, he said, to give “everybody the best opportunity to get a great education.”

Off Broadway
Dear Diary:
My friend was acting in an Off Broadway play. My wife, two boys and I went to see it.
Unfortunately, we got lost on the way and were 45 minutes late in arriving.
As we approached the box office to get our tickets, the clerk asked if we were the Spanos.
Yes, we said.
Thank God, he replied. We were waiting for you to start.

England's Kim, 16, youngest to make PGA Tour cut in 11 years
16-year-old Kris Kim makes the most of his great tee shot and sinks the birdie putt on Hole 2 of The CJ Cup Byron Nelson. (0:36)

Kris Kim , a 16-year-old English amateur playing on a sponsor exemption at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, became the youngest player in 11 years to make the cut in a PGA Tour event.
Kim finished his second round Friday with a birdie for a 4-under 67. At 7-under 135, he was among 66 players who made the cut, which was 6 under. Jake Knapp was the leader at 14-under 128.
Guan Tianlang was 14 when he made the cut at both the Masters and Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2013, according to ESPN Stats & Information.
At 16 years, 7 months old, Kim is the fifth-youngest player ever to make a PGA Tour cut, according to the Tour. His feat also comes just two weeks after Miles Russell, 15, became the youngest to make the cut in the 35-year history of the Korn Ferry Tour.
Kim, who is the son of former LPGA Tour player and South Korea native Ji-Hyun Suh, is making his PGA Tour debut. He is the first amateur sponsored by South Korean company CJ Group, which is the title sponsor of the Nelson for the first time.
"I'm happy," Kim said. "I can't wait to get started again tomorrow. I've enjoyed it so much the last couple days, and being here two more days makes it so much sweeter."
A first-time Tour winner earlier this year, Knapp enters the weekend with sole possession of the lead after a second consecutive 7-under 64 in McKinney, Texas. He was a stroke ahead of Troy Merritt (62) and first-round leader Matt Wallace (66) and 2 ahead of Kelly Kraft (66).
"Even when I was doing any of that stuff, I always knew this was what I wanted to do and felt like it's where I should be. Just wasn't there yet," said Knapp, just more than two years removed from working security at a restaurant in his hometown that was also a late-night hotspot. "Just kept working away and sticking at it."
Merritt closed his season-low round with an eagle at the 531-yard ninth hole, where he hit his approach to 16 feet and made the putt. He had birdied four of the previous six holes.
Wallace finished on the same par 5 later in the day and saved par after driving into a native area and then chunking a shot from there to under a bridge.
Hometown favorite Jordan Spieth , the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 20, shot a 70 to finish at 4-under 138 and miss the cut by 2 strokes. On the 16th, his wayward drive ricocheted off the elbow of a male spectator back into the fairway. Spieth still bogeyed the hole then parred his last two.
Defending champion Jason Day closed his round with a 35-foot par putt for a 70 and was just on the cut line at 6-under 136.
Knapp's only bogey through the first two rounds was on his 12th hole Friday, the dogleg No. 3, where his drive went into the left rough. But he birdied four of his last six holes, that stretch starting with a 32-foot putt at the par-3, 192-yard fourth hole.
"Obviously, a putt you're not trying to make," he said. "Hit it a little bit harder than I would've liked and luckily it was on a good line and went in."
Knapp, who turns 30 on May 31, lost his card on the developmental Korn Ferry Tour before taking the part-time job in the fall of 2021 at the place in Costa Mesa, California, where for nearly nine months he worked Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights -- often until 2 or 3 a.m. The former UCLA player would practice and go to the gym in between his work shifts.
He got his third win on PGA Tour Canada in August 2022 and last year earned his PGA Tour card by finishing the season 13th on the Korn Ferry Tour. He won the Mexico Open in his fifth start this season, and his ninth overall, including two as an amateur in 2015.
His PGA Tour biography also touts that he can solve a Rubik's Cube, loves to work out and would pursue a career in the fitness industry if he weren't playing golf.
"Yeah, few interesting ones about me," Knapp said. "I do my best to, I'm kind of a golf-only guy. Just play a lot of golf and practice a lot. That's been my focus for the last four, five years."
At TPC Craig Ranch north of Dallas, Knapp hit 16 of 18 greens each of the first two rounds. He had the same number of putts (28) both days, though the combined distance of those shots on the greens went from 75 feet on Thursday to 139 feet on Friday.
"For the most part hitting it pretty solid and keeping in the right areas. Made it relatively easy on myself." Knapp said. "Early on in the year felt like I was putting well, and for the last month or so the stroke felt the same and ball wasn't going in the hole. ... Nice to see a few more going in."
Merritt opened his round with consecutive birdies before a three-putt bogey at No. 12, though he got that stroke right back with a 52-foot chip-in at No. 13. He made only his second cut in his past six tournaments, finishing 67th in the other one.
"It's fantastic, especially when you hit the ball solid and making a lot putts," said Merritt, who is in his 331st PGA Tour event and last won in 2018. "You're not accidentally there. You've actually played well to get there. I haven't done that. I've accidently backdoored a couple top-10s last fall."

How Seth England Turned Big Loud Into A Multifaceted, Mainstream Hit Machine
With his golden ear and bold risk-taking, the country powerhouse's partner/CEO has helped mint stars like Morgan Wallen, Florida Georgia Line and HARDY.

By the time Morgan Wallen began working on his 2023 album, One Thing at a Time , he was no hit-making novice: He had earned six Billboard Country Airplay No. 1s, and his previous release, Dangerous: The Double Album , had spent 10 weeks atop the Billboard 200 .
Still, Wallen listened when Seth England — partner/CEO at Big Loud , where Wallen is signed in a joint deal with Mercury Records/Republic — suggested he include a particular song on the new album.

For nearly two decades, England’s golden ear, entrepreneurial skill and penchant for strategic risk-taking have transformed what was once a boutique music publishing operation into a multifaceted hit machine with label and management components. Big Loud was named Billboard ’s top country label of 2023, one of 24 year-end charts the label and its artists landed on.
Much of that success came courtesy of stadium-filler Wallen. One Thing at a Time led the Billboard 200 for 19 nonconsecutive weeks, tying Garth Brooks’ 1991 album, Ropin’ the Wind , for the most weeks at No. 1 on the chart for a country album. Wallen’s One Night at a Time World Tour, which spanned three continents and over 50 shows last year, won him the top country touring artist honor at the Billboard Music Awards. But Wallen isn’t Big Loud’s only standout signee: HARDY broke through in 2023, earning Country Airplay hits with “Truck Bed” and the Lainey Wilson collaboration “wait in the truck,” and this year, Ashley Cooke notched her first top 20 Country Airplay song with “Your Place.” Big Loud’s roster also includes rising country artists ERNEST, Hailey Whitters, Charles Wesley Godwin, Lily Rose, Stephen Wilson Jr. and Jake Worthington.
On a shelf in his office at the label’s Nashville HQ, England has a small replica of Hitsville, U.S.A., home of the first recording studio and headquarters of Motown Records, one of his biggest inspirations. Close by sits a first pressing of The Miracles’ 1960 hit “Shop Around,” written by Smokey Robinson and Motown founder Berry Gordy.
“I’ve walked [Motown’s] buildings in Detroit because I’m so fed by the energy they had,” England says. “It wasn’t without complication, because when you’re so intertwined that way, the successes are big, but the failures sometimes hurt more because you’re all trying together.”
England grew up in small-town Illinois and studied music business and marketing at Greenville University, pursuing Nashville internships during his college summers. One was at publisher Harlan Howard Songs, where he met Sara Knabe (now Big Loud head of A&R), who connected him in 2006 with Big Loud Shirt Publishing, founded by songwriter Craig Wiseman (Tim McGraw’s “Live Like You Were Dying”).
“He was like, ‘I’ll do whatever needs to be done.’ He had volunteered to intern for the summer, even though he wasn’t getting college credit for it,” Wiseman recalls, noting that England’s initiative extended to even pulling weeds outside the office. “I thought, ‘This is an industrious young guy.’ ” England aspired to become a song plugger, and Wiseman eventually granted him a three-month tryout.
“He hung on to an email I had sent and emailed the song to Kenny himself,” Wiseman recalls. “Seth has always been a cowboy; he’s like a six-shooter and has been from day one. That’s what you got to be.” The song became a top five Hot Country Songs hit for Chesney in 2010. About a year later, Big Loud Shirt Publishing had “an implosion on the business side,” Wiseman says. “Basically, I fired all the adults in the building and realized, ‘Me and the intern that pulls weeds are going to be running this company.’ It was the best thing that ever happened.”
Over the subsequent years, England rose through the ranks, eventually becoming vp of A&R. In 2008, he helped bring another future Big Loud leader to Nashville for the first time: writer-producer Joey Moi, best known then for his work with Nickelback.
“I would go to events with him and probably shake hands with 50 to 75 people I’d never met before,” Moi says. “He was effortlessly introducing me to the entire industry. He’s a natural-born CEO. And he’s such a good pitch guy. If he wants something — he’s going to convince you.”
Moi moved to Nashville from Canada, and in short order, he, England and Wiseman partnered to launch Big Loud Management in 2011. “I’m a song person and Craig’s all creative. Seth’s that grounding force to make sure the ship is on course,” Moi says of the trio’s complementary talents. “That’s the magical thing about our partnership — we’ve all occupied our corners, and none of us is trying to be each other.”
The act also arrived at a pivotal time. In the early 2010s, England watched how streaming boosted Sweden’s music industry into a rebound — and though country music in general was slow to embrace it, he was an early believer and took steps to ensure FGL’s streaming success. “I thought, ‘This is the future,’ ” he says. Initially, his team sifted through data to create their own streaming reports; now Big Loud has a Ph.D. statistician on staff.
England’s bullishness on streaming directly influenced his release strategy for FGL’s “H.O.L.Y.” in 2016. Sensing the song “could be bigger than your standard country moves,” he brought it to Spotify’s then-global head of country programming John Marks, who in turn connected England with pop-oriented Spotify executives Doug Ford and Mike Biggane.
“I sat in a Manhattan recording studio and played [“H.O.L.Y.”] for them and they were floored,” England recalls. “I believe we got the cover and the first or second slot on [the all-genre] New Music Friday.” When “H.O.L.Y.” came out, he continues, “it was reactive right away. I could’ve gotten in big trouble when people really thought I was renegading too hard. But I didn’t want that rollout to happen without maximum potential. You win some, you lose some — but we won that one.”
In 2015, England and his team launched Big Loud Records, with Lane and Wallen their first two signees. In the process, they created an all-inclusive powerhouse of publishing, management and label services, where artist-writers like HARDY and ERNEST pen hits for a range of artists (like Wallen) while propelling their own recording careers.
Big Loud Management guides roster artists including Wallen (whom England co-manages with Kathleen Flaherty), HARDY, ERNEST, Cooke and Worthington. While that might seem like a conflict of interest, Moi says England’s experience as a manager only enhances his work as label CEO. “Some managers can come through a record company and be very combative,” Moi explains. “They’re always thinking they have to fight for their artists. Seth’s able to see that perspective right away, and it diffuses any kind of combative process that might be there.” England says multiple artists outside of Big Loud have approached him to manage them, but he has turned all of them down: “That’s not the centerpiece of my mission. My mission is Big Loud.”
In recent years, that mission has required England, in his capacity as both manager and label head, to offer difficult guidance for Wallen, who was caught on video using a racial slur in 2021 and more recently was arrested on three felony counts in connection to a chair-throwing incident at Eric Church’s Nashville bar.
“Morgan and I have always had a very close relationship. We’ve onboarded some new teammates in his life to give him well-rounded help. In a lot of cases, that decays relationships between manager and artist; in his case, it feels like the best year we’ve had,” England says. “But [we always ask] the same question: ‘How are you? What do you need for what is going on?’ I think if you’re a good manager, you’ll know when the right time is to ask that. We don’t condone it. We don’t enable it, we don’t encourage it. We trust that he’s making progress and is heading in the right direction.”
England has led Big Loud’s progression into a multifaceted music organization, creating independent ventures under its publishing and label umbrellas. In 2019, Big Loud Records teamed with singer-songwriter Nicolle Galyon to launch label and publishing company Songs & Daughters with a combined roster including Whitters, Tiera Kennedy and Lauren Watkins. In 2021, Big Loud introduced imprint Big Loud Rock, which has helped push HARDY’s music to rock radio. Other partners include ERNEST’s publishing company, Cadillac Music, a joint venture with Severance Records, and Back Blocks Music, founded and run by publishing executive Rakiyah Marshall, who is married to England. (The couple have two children.)
Big Loud also recently announced a deal with Mercury Records/Republic, which expanded its distribution services for Big Loud artists beyond the initial three it had already worked with (Wallen, Rose and Dylan Gossett) to the entire Big Loud roster. And in November, Big Loud partnered with Miranda Lambert and Jon Randall to launch Big Loud Texas. The partnership with Lambert is multidimensional: Following her April move to Republic, Big Loud will handle her country radio promotion and marketing.
Over the past year, Big Loud grew even more, adding offices and label managers in Australia and the United Kingdom and bolstering its Toronto branch. But despite occasional rumors that the expanding company is on the market, England says, “The fairest and shortest answer is no.”
This story will appear in the May 11, 2024, issue of Billboard.
